Do you have some empty spaces in your house or apartment that you could add some interest? Having an eye for the right painting will add some interests and decorate your walls.

Shopping for paintings

First, you need to decide on the painting and the area that needs it. Second, you need to ask yourself what kind of painting you're interested in buying? For example, paintings with people, landscape, abstract, animals, flowers or collage. Choosing the right painting for your space will make a big difference in your decoration. Next, let's look at the different style of painting.

Style of paintings to consider for your decorating space

Contemporary- Painting of this style uses a more modern technique. Upcoming artists of the 21st century are more electic in their style. You can see other influences on contemporary art if you choose this route.

Impressonist- This style of painting uses bright colors and depicts painting in the 19 century. Claude Monet popularized this style of painting with his (Impression, soleil levant). Art of this style captures images in a natural setting. The artist uses of light and the movement of brush strokes are techniques to look for when choosing this type of style.

Have you ever looked at a painting and it had the "whoa!" factor? Well if you do, you've an eye for art appreciation. Today you'll learn about art appreciation. So let's begin.

The characteristics of great art

All great art shares some characteristics, which are timeless and universal in themes. First, let's look at forms. I would like you to think of a ballet dancer for this exercise. I think this is a perfect example because a ballet dancer uses body shape, rhythm, line, and style during dancing.

The rhythmic motion of art

As you note, a ballet dancer uses rhythmic motion to glide his or her body across the dance floor. This is the same way a painter uses his or her brush strokes against the canvas. As the viewer, you witness the rhythmic motion of the brush strokes. As you gazed at the picture, you're pulled in based on how the artist interweaves the use of shape, lines and rhythm. What this has to do with the picture?

The artist use of form sometimes has a hypnotic spell that it casts on you. It engulfs you with an emotional entanglement. You're so carried away with the painting that you've to pull yourself away from it. That’s the power of an artist.

Artistic Style

Next, let's look at style. Every artist uses a certain style that allows him or her to stand out. Okay! we'll look at style in more details. We will start with Claude Monet (1840-1926). He captured light and beauty with light colors. He played on your emotions by pulling you in the picture with his color choices.

Next, Paul Cézanne (1893-1906), a French painter whose focus was on landscape painting. He had a way with placement, which brought order and unison to his subject. His paintings are timeless and are teaching tools for scholars.

Vincent van Gogh (1853-1906), a Dutch painter used bright colors in his paintings. He had many challenges in his life and as such, you can see them in his paintings. You can see the emotions he depicted in his painting with the bright and dark colors. He was famous for using pointillism a special form of painting using fine dots.

Contemporary art reflects art in the 21st century. Artists are more eclectic and are more versatile in their design. Artists explore graffiti, collage, computer art, cartooning, scrap booking, mail art, painting, basketry, line art, and doodling. The 21st century brings you art with a passion.

Barron Education Series (2007) Painting with Acrylics revealed the history of this great medium. The inception of acrylic began in the 1920s when a group of Mexican painters wanted to experiment a different medium which could withstand the weather. Acrylic paint was born as a result of the painters experimenting with synthetic resin.

According to Barron, synthetic resin showed resistance to the weather and dries quickly. The popularity of acrylic intensified in the 1950s and continued up until today. Artist world-wide found the versatility of this new medium which add zest to their painting.

The benefit of painting with Acrylic

1. It has great water resistant.
2. Dries quickly.
3. Requires less planning time.
4. You can apply it to any layer.
5. Acrylic paint offers flexibility.
6. You can create transparency by using water.

Using a variety of colors in your painting will build harmony. Just think of a musician and his notes selection. By choosing the correct notes, he is able to play the most beautiful music. This is the same concept as in artwork.

How to harmonize your colors

As an artist, before I paint any piece I lined up my colors. First, I decide which color I will use as my base and then I paint the surface. Next, I choose the second color based on my composition. If I were working from an outline then I would apply the colors accordingly. Note that each color on the canvas builds harmony as you apply the techniques of colors.

When colors do not work

Have you ever painted a picture and then you realized that something went wrong? When you looked at the colors, your head seemed to throb. You finally woke up to the fact that you did not choose your colors correctly.

The surface is smooth and it absorbs acrylic paint with a beautiful finish. Using cardboard can help you to save money on those pricey canvases. Finding use for cardboard is another way to save our planet and cut down on waste. You can get cardboard at the supermarket for free.

How to use cardboard in your painting

The first thing you do is to find a cardboard box. Next you need a ruler, pencil, and a knife. Flatten your cardboard box and then you open up the sides with a knife. Use your ruler to measure the space and then mark the lines with your pencil/pen. Use your knife to cut out your shape. Now you have a space to paint. Cardboard is good for acrylic painting. The Art With A Purpose

Today I'm going to share with you my journey as an artist. Have you ever had the feeling to do something extraordinary and you kept putting it off. You file this thought at the back of your mind and ever so often, it surfaced. What do you do with it? I know some of you can relate to this experience. I do and that was how it was with my art before I began painting.

My Artistic Streak

I felt I was holding something inside of me that needed to come out. The dust started to gather and I wasn't doing anything. I fell in love with the idea of painting but I wasn't going anywhere with it. I even went ahead, and bought some acrylic paints, brushes, and canvases. When I brought them home, I filed them away in the closet. Now and again as I reached into the closet they came tumbling down from the shelves reminding me that they were ready and waiting for me.

The Paintings Evolved

Immediately after I relocated I began painting. Painting was effortless. My mind was content and I basked in the peacefulness of my surroundings. I find comfort and peace of mind as I began to explore the different colors and the magic they brought to my art.

Magic Happened

The pictures emerged as I painted on the canvas. I surprised myself with the quality images that came to life. After all those years, I finally gave birth to my art. What a relief! I'm happy and you should be too. Be proud of your gifts and don’t wait too long to give birth to them. You never know you might be carrying your masterpiece. So long now and don't go anywhere. Mrs Laughingpants Gave Birth At Last

Have you ever been told that you're wacky and you're on the deep end? People who are artists understand this statement. As a teenager I was often told by my mother and siblings that I had the most outrageous ideas in the world. Little did I know that these ideas were part of my creative streak.

I was blessed with ideas. Teaching my fifth grade class many years ago brought back memories. My students were so excited with my creative ideas. One idea was to create a real life restaurant in the class. One student told me I had great ideas. I was called the idea teacher. Oh well!

The world is a stage and we are all actors in it. Whatever you do today make it extraordinary. I am always creating and as such I never give up. Task becomes daunting at times but I always try to make it. I always find a way whenever I encounter a stumbling block. I have put a lot of efforts in my work over the years and I am working to reap some reward now. It is not only for myself but for others too.

Students are my inspiration

In one of my sixth grade classrooms I had students who appreciated my artwork. In 2004, I started to explore drawing people. I had fun drawing the faces of my students. They would volunteer to get their faces drawn. As soon as the seat in front of my desk became empty another student would fill it.

Seeing the awe and excitement on their faces when their pictures were drawn was something to witness. Some of them would run with their picture and shared it with their friends or they would go quietly and looked at it. Sometimes they would tell me it was not them. Interestingly, the resemblance was there. I wondered who they were fooling.

My Little Angel

"How could you do that?," said my student after I gave up on an art illustration class. Every class I took at this school my student would ask me to show him my work. He was intrigued with my art. At that time I did not take art that seriously. My student saw something in me that I did not see at the time. I did not see my self as the artist until a year after I began painting. There was always something in me that I wanted to express and I did not give it any focus. It was a dream that I did not realize until it kept nagging me.

I finally gave up and give in to my nagging thoughts. I picked up the paint brush one day and began painting. I did not realize that painting brought joy to my life. How I began painting

I began painting over four years ago in the mountain of Western North Carolina. I was a resident of Weaverville a small town in that area. Interestly, I was the only African America living in my gated community. For the most part, the residents were pleasant and helpful except one who was challenging. My dog Shelia, a dalmation mixed breed explored the neighborhood. My brief time in that neighborhood I spent creating artwork.

The Joy of Creating Art

Creating art at the time brought peace and contentment. It appeared there was an useen presence giving me inspiration and helping me to produce the artwork. I started gathering my acrycli paints, brushes and paper. Painting was a therapy. I lost track of time when I was painting. I painted whatever came to mind. I developed my artistic skill painting everyday.

Producing my masterpeice

Mixing colors became an art of mine. The mountains provided a state of tranquility that brought out the best of my intuitive ability. Not knowing where you're going and let go of the ego is what creates any masterpeice. It is amazing to see the quality of artwork I produced. Finding one's gift and use it is a way to build success.
