Peter Davies is general manager of the
Wianno Club in Osterville, MA.

Q: You came out of the music business in your native England where, among other jobs, you once managed punk rocker Iggy Pop. How did that prepare you for the roles you’ve had in the club industry?

A: The music business and private club world both have high levels of customer/owner service expectations that must be personal, confidential, respectful, detail oriented, and reliable. Rock stars may be insistent about the color combination of the M&M’s in their dressing rooms; club members should expect to be greeted warmly by name and, without asking, served a martini with olives, not a twist. I developed my interpersonal and servant-leadership skills in the music industry, something that serves my work in a private club very well.

Q: What is the one characteristic of Wianno Club that distinguishes it from others?

A: The Wianno Club is a special place where cherished memories and lifelong friendships are created for generation after generation. A late September wedding at the club was a great example. The bride has spent every summer here since she was born. When she entered the ballroom for the first time as a married woman, I’m sure she remembered all the happy times spent with her friends and family in the same room over the years at bingo nights, teen dances, and Independence Day celebrations. The adults she knew as a child and her childhood friends, now adults, too, were there to celebrate her marriage with her.

Q: What is one mistake you’ve made in your career that you look back on now and consider a valuable learning experience?

A: I’ve certainly had my share of difficult moments, and there isn’t one that I haven’t learned something from. But my most valuable learning experience can be described by one word: toleration. Throughout my career, I’ve always wanted to see the good in people and encourage them by catching them doing the right things. At first I had challenges getting it right because I was afraid of confrontation. I tolerated actions and behaviors that deserved a different response. Circumstances or behaviors went unaddressed until frustration peaked beyond the level of toleration, leading to unpleasant and unsatisfactory outcomes. I’ve gotten better after I talked about my challenge with management consultant Ken Blanchard. He said: “Keep your focus on catching people doing the right things, but keep that meaningful by always providing honest, fair, and timely feedback. Absolutely lead with love, but keep in mind that sometimes you must lead with tough love. When people know you speak the truth, even when it’s a difficult truth, they will come to trust you.” That was great advice.

Q: Of what do you wish most club members had a greater appreciation?

Voting for CMAA National Board of Directors is easy as 1..2..3

CMAA Members: Let's get started...

1. Online Voting

For the 2013 elections, you may request an online Voting Authorization from December 5, 2012 through February 5, 2013. Paper ballots are no longer sent. If you do not have access to a computer, simply call the National Headquarters and a staff member will send you a hard copy "voting authorization" of what is online.

When you register online to vote, if you're authorized as an eligible voter, you will be issued a random voter code. Once your vote is "cast" using this unique code, the process is complete and closed. Your online vote is confidential. In other words, how you voted in the election cannot be traced back to your membership ID. Please note that you will be unable to change your vote once it is cast.

2. Absentee Voting

If you are attending Conference but will be unable to vote on one of the three days allocated, you may vote absentee and may receive your ballot at the Member Services Pavilion in San Diego.

3. Voting Booths

On-site voting will take place at the 2013 World Conference during the following times at the San Diego Marriott Marquis & Marina in the North Tower, lobby level, Presidio Room:

Saturday, February 9, 9:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.

Sunday, February 10, 12 noon - 6:00 p.m.

Monday, February 11, 6:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.

Please note, if you have voted online or by absentee, you may not recast your vote on site in San Diego.
Peter C. Davies, CCM

Davies4Director

In 2010, I made a promise that I would listen and learn from you, the best and smartest people I know. During the three years I have served as a national director, I have never forgotten that promise, especially when attending a CMAA event or during a visit to one of our chapters.

The membership of CMAA is a remarkable group of people and every chapter, regardless of size or geographic location, reflects this, Each time I return home from a chapter visit, I do so energized to live my life a little fuller, make my club a little better and to work a little harder on behalf of CMAA and its members.

The past three years have been exciting and dynamic ones for CMAA. The national staff, and every member of the board of directors, has listened carefully to you and compelling new initiatives have been put in place as a result. Perfect examples of this are track education, member involvement in choosing speakers for conference and the Step Membership Program.

A CMAA Membership now offers greater value than ever before with the education portals offered through CMAA University and the significant benefits offered clubs, as well as their managers, by Club Solutions - and this is just to name a few. I certainly don’t take personal credit for these initiatives but I do take great pride in supporting my fellow directors and our team on King Street as these exciting new initiatives transform from concept to reality.

In 2013, Shelly and I will celebrate our fourteenth wedding anniversary and we never forget to count our many blessings. I think we all share those moments when work consumes our lives or throws significant challenges in our path. That’s why I am always thankful for both my loving and supportive family and my CMAA family of friends, who are always ready to provide support when needed. I wish I could tell you that I have found a magical formula to fix all the bumps in the road but, of course, I haven’t! However, I’m still trying, still listening and thanks to CMAA: still learning!

The experience of serving with my fellow directors and our national staff has truly been a gift and I am filled with gratitude.

Fellow members, you have given me the honor of serving you as a national director for the past three years and I respectfully ask you to support me once again in this election. You have my word that I will continue to work hard on your behalf and, without question…..keep listening!

The dust has settled from all the excitement in San Diego and I would like to thank you all for your tremendous support of my election efforts. It is thrilling to have been elected to a three-year term as a national director and I am especially proud to have this opportunity to represent my Chapter at the national level.

It was just two years ago that I relocated to Cape Cod from Cincinnati and from the Ohio Valley Chapter to NECMA. When I arrived on the Cape I was very appreciative of the calls I received from NECMA managers welcoming me to the Chapter. At the time, I made the decision to focus on my new job and wait until my first season was over before becoming an active participant in NECMA. I must share with you that this was a poor decision and my advice to anyone relocating and transitioning to a new job is to get immediately involved in their CMAA Chapter!

I started attending Chapter meetings in September of my first year in New England and immediately felt more comfortable and confident as I started to interact with my new Chapter friends – a group that I quickly discovered to be wicked smart and willing to share their extensive knowledge of this wonderful corner of the United States.

Little did I know that a few months later I would be nominated by the CMAA Board of Directors to complete the second year of my fellow countryman and Chapter member Stephen Downes three-year term and be asking my new Chapter to support me in running for election for my own three-year term in 2010.

NECMA President Ric Shultz moved fast to put the wheels in motion and before I knew it a committee was formed and Peter Trombetta had generously agreed to contribute his considerable talents as campaign manager. I never felt more fortunate in my life.

I am so grateful to Ric Schultz for getting my campaign so quickly in place and to our 2010 President Barry Stacer for keeping it there. I was truly humbled and appreciative of the encouragement and support of the NECMA Board of Directors and NECMA Past President’s Council. Everyone deserves a special mention but I must give a special thanks to Paul Lazar for creating the campaign slogan "...still learning"… a simple phrase that captured my personal passion for CMAA so well. Drew Ford was the creative one who conceived the collegiate, bespectacled logo and I think just about everyone on the team pushed me into producing the YouTube clips!

It is impossible to express the depth of my gratitude to Peter Trombetta for pulling me into the 21st Century with a truly electronic campaign. Peter provided invaluable help with my Chapter visit schedule and was always available with the best advice and guidance whenever I asked for it! I hope he is not too dismayed that I am chairman of the Technology Committee this year! Thank you Peter!

This first part of the journey has been quite a thrill and it is now time for me to serve our wonderful association in the best way I possibly can. I look forward to hearing from you all and I hope you will always let me know whenever there is something I can do to help.

Thanks again and very best wishes,

Peter
