COMMON U.S. MATTRESS SIZES - (AND SOME ODD ONES) MATTRESS SIZE CHART

2011-07-22T12:13:00.001-04:00

mattress sizes

What size mattress do you have? Well, here is the low down on mattress measurements and common sizes. Also, I'll explain why you sometimes see differing measurements on mattress sizes depending on where you look. So here we go.

There are 4 common mattress sizes used in the U.S. today. They are:

Twin Size - 39" x 75"
Full Size - 54" x 75"
Queen Size - 60" x 80"
King size - 78" x 80"

There are a few common "odd" sized mattresses too. They are:

Twin XL - 39" x 80"
Full XL - 54" x 80"
California King - 74" x 84"

I say "common odd sizes" because they are not typically stocked by mattress stores(at least on the east coast) but are readily available by most manufacturers without a problem.

Now, when you measure your own mattress to check, you may notice that the mattress is an inch or two less than the factory measurements. This is very common and is to be expected. Remember, mattresses are a textile product that are sewn together and trimmed too. This brings the overall measurements in a bit.

If you have any comments or suggestions, please leave a comment. Thanks for stopping by Mattress Man Online!

Back To School Mattress Sale - Save More On Our Mattresses! College Discounts on Mattresses

2011-06-14T22:44:00.008-04:00

Well, summer is here and that means that some of you college students will be getting a head start on your classes. We just want to let you know that we're here for your mattress needs! For years we have been a main supplier of mattresses for the Worcester area college students. If you're getting a new apartment, or stuck on a thin little dorm mattress with no support, we're here to help.

Because we keep our overhead extremely low and maintain an inexpensive advertising budget, we are able to give you more options and better quality in an inexpensive mattress. Also, our flexible delivery schedule allows your move in day to go much more smoothly.

Every year our back to school mattress sale is a huge hit. College kids all over central Massachusetts have come to see us and usually send their friends in too! We even have a referral program for college students. For every person that you send our way that buys a mattress, you get $20 cash! We've had college students come in 4 and 5 at a time to cash in on the mattress referral plan. What a way to get even more savings on your mattress set!

Now, let's go to the mattresses! Prices for mattresses start at just $99 for a twin. Our most common sizes are full size sets for just $199, and queen size sets for just $229. What's nice with these is that although they are an entry level mattress, they are adult rated with over 400 coils in a queen. The mattresses also have nice quilted tops for extra comfort. We sell this mattress by the truckload every year during the back to school mattress sale.

The next level up gives you a lot of extra comfort, but that doesn't mean the price goes crazy! A queen set in the next level is only $249! This is such a great deal and when you see them side by side, you'll know what I mean. Plus, you can add a pillow top at this level that adds even more comfort.

We welcome you into one of our showrooms to try these mattresses out, or order by phone, or online. If you can, we recommend you take a drive out to our Webster showroom where we feature many mattress sets that are on clearance! These are name brand, high end mattresses that are up to 70% off their original retails! These sets move quickly though so they are not posted online typically.

Thank you for stopping by our blog! Come visit us in one of our showrooms for your back to school mattress needs!

We typically deliver our mattresses to the following schools:

Assumption College
Becker College
Clark University
College of the Holy Cross
Quinsigamond Community College

We also deliver in to schools in the Boston area as well!

How To Wash A Latex Foam Pillow - Instructions From The Manufacturer

2011-06-07T14:06:00.001-04:00

The benefits of a natural latex pillow are many. In addition to the amazing comfort and support benefits of natural latex pillows, they are long lasting. I'm talking many years. My own personal experience has been 5 years so far, and my latex pillows look and feel like new. This brings up a common question: How do I wash my latex pillow? After all, a pillow that you keep that long is going to get dirty at some point! Well, I've read a few articles on the internet on how to do this, but not many good ones. I decided to talk to the manufacturer directly. Here's what I found out.....

First off, they aren't real keen on people washing their latex pillows. Seems every sentence started with "If you must....". That being said, here are the instructions I was given:

1. DO NOT wash your pillow in a washer, nor dry it in a dryer.

2. If you must clean the pillow you will want to hand wash (either spot cleaning it or using a cloth to lightly clean it)

3. To dry it you must air dry it, never put the Latex Bun in a dryer.

4. You may wash the cover in a delicate cold wash, and air dry so it does not shrink.

5. Please note, if you do wash the latex foam bun it does void the warranty.

Notice they never mention soaking the latex pillow in warm water with dish soap! I have read a few articles suggesting you do this. Spot cleaning seems to work just fine. I have done this to mine and have had no issues. My personal recommendation is to use a protective cover on the pillow and just wash that. They are inexpensive and keep your latex pillows clean!

If you have any comments or questions, please post them in the comments or in the mattress forum at the top of the page. If any of you have any experience with cleaning your latex pillows, we would love to hear about it. Thanks!

Sleep Well,

John The Mattress Man

Split Box Spring Foundation For Queen Or Full Mattress - Only $139!

2011-05-07T13:46:00.009-04:00

Why get a split box spring foundation for your mattress? Well, if you have a narrow entrance, odd angle, low ceiling, or turning staircase, you may have no choice. Here in New England, we see that a lot! Many of the homes here are older and built to hold a full size mattress in the master bedroom. Now that the primary master bedroom size is queen, more and more people are needing the split box spring.
Why a split box spring and not a split mattress? Mattresses can bend and flex whereas box springs foundations cannot. Most coil mattresses can bed anywhere from a 20-45 degree angle, and foam mattresses can fold in half if need be. These generally don't have a problem getting through these tougher entrances. The box springs, however, don't bend much if at all.
We have split queen box spring foundations here at Eddy's Mattress Outlet for just $139.99 for the pair. If you've looked at all for split queen box springs, you'll know what a great buy that is! Most places will charge you that much and more per piece! We generally have them in stock and ready to go at any time. If you need a split full size box spring foundation, we may have to order it but we can get it for you! Stop in or give us a call!

Bob's Val-U-Pedic Complaints, Reviews, and Comparisons

2011-05-04T15:54:00.006-04:00

Well, what can you say? Bob's definately comes up with some funky names for his mattresses! This is an overview of the new Bob's Val-U-Pedic that's currently being promoted every other commercial on the radio. No specs available as of the time I'm writing this, but the pricing is as follows:
Twin Mattress - $169
Twin Set - $199
Full Mattress - $269
Full Set - $299
Queen Mattress - $269
Queen Set - $299
King Mattress - $419
King Set - $499
Pretty aggressive pricing for a Bob's mattress. We would love any feedback of anyone who has tried this mattress out, bought it, or has any opinion of it at all. Post it up in the mattress forum...link is up near the top of the page.

As a comparison though, lets take a look at our venerable "Factory Select" mattress set by Corsicana. We sell this mattress by the truckload for one reason: REAL value! Now, you've seen the pricing of the Bob's Val-U-Pedic, here's the pricing of the Crazy Quilt from mattress man online:

Twin Mattress - $99
Twin Set - $149
Full Mattress - $169
Full Set - $199
Queen Mattress - $179
Queen Set - $219
King Mattress - $299
King Set - $399
Because we use the leftover quilting from the factory on these, though, the quilting tends to be a little nicer than other mattresses at this price point. So, it's more comfortable for you! And did you notice how much less the Crazy Quilt costs? Again, real value. Order online here: http://mattressmanonline.com Just my two cents on the Bob's Val-U-Pedic. Again, if you have any experience with the Val-U-Pedic from Bob's Discount Furniture, please share it in the forum up above! Thanks and sleep well.

Daughter who threw out mum's mattress with $1million savings stuffed in it searches rubbish dump

By Tom Pettifor 11/06/2009

A woman threw out her elderly mum's old mattress not realising it was stuffed with a million dollars. When she learned the heart-stopping truth she dashed outside but was too late to stop workers taking the rubbish away.

The woman - known only as Anat, who had treated her mum to a new mattress - had no choice but to head for the dumps and begin searching for the fortune in great mounds of refuse.

Yesterday she was a pitiful sight still sifting through tons of garbage on landfill sites around Tel Aviv, Israel. Newspaper Yediot Ahronot published a picture of her plight. Dump manager Yitzhak Borba told Israeli Army Radio his staff were helping her and that she appeared "totally desperate".

He said 2,500 tons of rubbish arrive at the site every day. Mr Borba even increased security to keep out treasure hunters who had heard Anat's story.

She gave her mother the new mattress on Monday. The old lady had stashed away US dollars and Israeli shekels after "a traumatic experience with banks".

Anat remained hopeful but, prepared for the worst, she said: "People have to take everything in proportion and thank God for the good and the bad."

See our page on how to dispose of a mattress.

HOW DO I GET RID OF AN OLD MATTRESS?

2011-01-29T13:47:00.006-05:00

This is probably the hardest part of getting a new mattress. Some retailers will take care of it for you for free or a nominal fee. Which, by the way, is the easiest and probably the best way to do it. If you are buying a new mattress somewhere that won't dispose of the old one, you may find yourself wondering what to do. Here are a few ideas to get rid of that old mattress of yours.

1. Give it away - You can use websites like Craigslist to find someone in need of a mattress on an extreme budget. Craigslist is easy to use and best of all, it's free!

2. Sell it - This is best done if your mattress is still in good shape. You must be realistic on the value and condition of it. Remember, it's not like a car that holds it's value. Just because you spent $1000 on it 2 years ago, doesn't mean anyone is going to buy yours for $800 now. Ebay and Craigslist both work well for this.

3. Donate it - Probably the ideal method to get rid of your old mattress. However, increasing government regulations are making this option more difficult. Contact local churches and charities to see if it's possible.

4. Recycle it! - If your mattress has officially run it's life course, look for a mattress recycling place in your area. Almost all components in a mattress are able to be recycled. Most recycling places do charge a small fee, but it's not very much typically.

5. Town dump or landfill - This is the least desirable method of getting rid of an old mattress, but it is there if you need it. Most local landfills will let you get rid of a mattress there for a small fee (about the same as mattress recycling by the way). **Please consider recycling first, as mattresses are bulky and take up a lot of landfill space. Also, they don't degrade very fast and often create dangerous soft spots in the landfill.

Here is an excellent place to call to recycle your old mattress in Massachusetts:

Outside of Massachusetts? Give this site a try: http://www.nationwidemattressrecycling.com

I don't know their full range of services, but you can contact them to get a quote I see on the site.

Thank you very much for checking out my blog. Please stop in and see the Mattress Man in our Worcester, Ma location!

Are Name Brand Mattress Sets Better?

2011-01-14T16:24:00.001-05:00

This question recently came up in response to an ad run by another mattress company in the area. They were advertising a name brand mattress set for $279 in your choice of twin, full, or queen. That sounds really great up front. But that's just the bait to get you in the door. Let me explain.
What's really important to understand here is that although the mattress set your getting does have a name brand tag stitched to it, it's really just a cheap mattress. All the major name brands make a cheap model, all the way to the top of the line premium. If you've ever fallen for one of these ads, you know what I mean. You'll get there and see that it's usually a 4-6" block of poly foam with a cover on it or a basic low end mattress with the lowest quality coil. When you decide you don't like that one, they will gladly move you to another mattress for more money. It's an old game that most mattress stores play. Most often, for the same price or even lower price, you can get better quality components, and a more comfortable mattress in an "off" brand mattress. I know, because I sell them by the truck load. The one size price also forces you to pay too much for the twin and full size as they have price it like everyone is getting a queen size.
I offer, everyday in my store, a nicer quality mattress set at a better price. No, it doesn't have a fancy name brand attached to it, but what's inside is what counts.

Twin size sets from $149

Full size sets from $199

Queen size sets from $249

King size sets from $399
