Music Lessons for all ages and levels

People of all ages and walks of life can learn music with us at Marie Arts Academy

London, England: Did you know learning a musical instrument is a great way to train your brain?

Before the advent of games and apps, it had been well established that one of the uncommon lifestyle choices that boosts the overall brain health and offers a lot of neurological benefits as well as keeps the mind sharper with ageing is musical training. Research has shown that learning to play a musical instrument offers great benefits to children as well as adults, and may even help in the fast-tracking recovery of patients with brain injuries.

Playing a musical instrument is a complex experience that integrates information input from the senses of vision, touch, and hearing, as well as fine movements. Learning to do this can cause permanent changes to the brain. Early brain studies show that the parts of the brain in musicians are slightly more developed than in non-musicians. Musical training enhances brain and mental functions. It, therefore, is one of the most effective forms of brain training you can get. That is why you should register with us at Marie De Bry Arts Academy and start your music training today.

Marie De Bry Arts Academy offers music lessons and helps you build brain power and fulfil your musical dreams. People of all ages and levels are welcomed to try out our music learning service.

British Film Institute, ZAFAA to Train Nigerian Actors, Producers in London NTA, Ben TV others partner for 2014 Awards

2014-07-30T17:56:00.000+01:00

British Film Institute, ZAFAA to Train Nigerian Actors, Producers in London
NTA, Ben TV others partner for 2014 Awards

In a bid to ensure that Nollywood/Ghallywood and other African enthusiasts all over the world are
given the best, the British Film Institute (BFI) and Nollywood Entertainment Limited UK, the
Nigerian Television Authority and the Nigerian
Film and Video Censors Board have finalised
agreements to conduct a professional youth training programme in November at the British Film
Institute in London, November, 2014.

Prince Sam Anwuzia , the CEO of Nollywood Entertainment Limited United Kingdom and
President of The African Film Festival and Academy Awards (ZAFAA), who confirmed this in a
statement after meeting with officials of the BFI in London disclosed that the training targeted at
youths is scheduled alongside the 2014 ZAFAA Global Awards from November 7 – 8.
Anwuzia disclosed that ‘’with the professional training at the BFI more stars will emerge in the
near future thereby giving the established stars a good run for their money.
The founder of ZAFAA Global Awards also disclosed that since the Academy is entering a
new phase aimed at continuous promotion of African arts and culture by telling her stories with
pictures, established actors, aspiring actresses’, producers and aspiring youths will be taken
through the rudiments of the industry during the programme.
Interested members of the industry and youths who wants to be part of the training are advised to
visit the ZAFAA website and follow the link to fill the form and pay for the programme.
Interestingly, to ensure that only the best of African films are honoured during the awards, The
British Film Institute has already confirmed the screening of all the entries for this year’s award
since the closure of entries for the different categories in June.
After complaints that African films shot, recorded and produced outside the shores of the continent
are not given adequate credit and recognition, ZAFAA has classified this year’s awards into
different categories: home, away and diaspora.
After series of meetings to harmonise the events, the ZAFAA officials in London and Nigeria,
explained that it is more sensible to classify Nollywood and other African Countries in one category
for the indigenous and one for the Africans in diaspora.
The organisers said ‘’although there are some of the movies with known faces from home , we
concluded that to be fair and also encourage the aspiring stars in the United Kingdom other
European countries and the Americas, it would be appropriate to categorise and equally recognise
and give them their right of place .

This year’s event, scheduled to hold November 7 through 8 include but not limited
to the Business/Investment Forum Youth Education /empowerment seminar at the BFI IMAX,
Charlie Chaplin Walk London and the Awards at the Grange Hotel, St. Paul's London.
The nomination party will hold in Nigeria one month before the London events. The Speakers
and Participants are to be drawn from accomplished African and International film makers/Directors

from Holywood, Bolywood (India), The Oscars, BAFTA , BFI, Nollywood actors Marketers,
Businessmen and Film enthusiasm partners to this year’s edition of ZAFAA Global Awards
include The Presidency through the Office of the Special Adviser to the President on Ethics and
Values, the British Film Institute, the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) and the National Film
and Video Censors Board. The event will be beamed live on NTA International, BEN TV and
other international Television stations around the world. ZAFAA Global Awards has been endorsed
by the Federal Ministry of Culture, Tourism and National Orientation, the Actors Guild
and the Senate Committee on Culture, Tourism and National Orientation

OBI EMELONYE FILES A DRONE OVER LAGOS AND GETS ARESSTED. IS THAT A BAD NEWS?

2014-05-28T23:17:00.002+01:00

Just a few days ago the London base Nollywood Movie director Obi Emelonye posted something quite interesting through his Facebook saying “Just been arrested with my team from the UK by Lagos TV for taking aerial shots of Lagos around shoprite Ikeja; using remote helicopters. As a media house they should understand what we are trying to do. But they want to put me in jail for making Lagos look great”.

I would like to ask the general public if this is a bad news. In-fact! I started with my friends and I got answers like these “Oh what a stupid country” “Lawless and foolish Nigeria! Why the heck would he be arrested” The most interesting were the comments Obi’s friends on Facebook made, like a guy named Ilo said something like “Dumb country #they don’t know”

Seriously, I admire Obi Emeloye so much in-fact each time I see him we always talk about his work and the passion for making African movies great. He’s my role model, one of the best directors in the industry especially here in London where there’s a lot of big mouthed money charging audition scam directors and womanizers. Obi and a few others have set a difference as what a true movie director should be. Respect!

I wouldn’t actually write this article but when I read people’s comment I was forced to write something. This incident should serve as a mirror to humanity. It’s not to soil Obi’s name but to review his case whether what happened to him in Nigeria is good or bad from my own point of few.

I mean am not trying to say it’s a good thing that he got arrested obviously, he wouldn’t be happy about that neither am I. But for the sake of health and safety and the people of Nigeria; I wouldn’t say its bad news either.

Let the truth be told, would he fly a drone over London Bridge? For the sake of trying to “make it look great” even in your own street where you live in London I don’t think you can even do that.

Certain procedures have been laid down for one to follow when it comes to filming with drones. Here in the UK, I know there’re certain standard of drones that are allowed for filmmakers to use. Not just some toy eBay version of remote helicopters that kids play with in the parks of London.

In the United Kingdom, Your drones must be up to standard; the drone operator must be an aviation certified/licensed personal and the people living around the area where the film drones will be used must be notified by the police that drones will be used in filming in the area on a particular date.

I could imagine the kind of remote helicopter that he was using for the shot. Probably, the kind that a camera twice the size of the drone; would then be glued or taped on it. According to my friend he would say “9ja style”.

What he (Obi) did is like giving a sports car to a first time driver; to drive around Lagos. As lawless as it may be Nigeria is not a playground for people to test their dangerous toys.

Imagine if the remote helicopter goes out of range and kills someone? Or crashes into a house and sets it ablaze. Those who have been there know how Lagos is it will be a disaster, couple with the current security concerns of the state.

At that point, His Facebook friends who are cursing the country now would start cursing him and his film/shots the once that “would make Lagos look great” may never be seen and he will have more problems to worry about than been arrested. And guys like me would write some serious stuff about Him.

In the United Kingdom, he will be charged for negligence, ignorance of the Law, attempting murder, illegal filming, illegal operation of drones and his production would be considered a risk for human safety; this could land him and his a team in jail for a very long time.

I was even surprise that he got arrested in Nigeria for using drones. I would have said well done to the authorities for doing the right thing until he posted the second one few minutes later saying “we have just been released by the state governor’s security details….” Ha! Typical Nigeria.

Okay, let’s say he successfully does his aerial shots and gets back to London; which I pray for. Other directors based in Nigeria would like to follow suit. It will be even worst cause in their own case most of them can’t even afford the eBay sold drones they will end up constructing some “Obunigwe” (local drones) which before it gets to perfection (probably in ten years’ time) a lot of disasters must have occurred; just imagine the chaos that will result to.

With the rate Nollywood produce’s movies, soon drones will start falling from the sky like rain drops. Then it will be too late to make amends, but if he and his team had followed the right procedures I bet they wouldn’t be arrested.

And if only the authorities would not be biased and do the right things and we Nigerians follow the law as it is written Nigeria would be much better as it is today.

The People make the country great! Let’s stop cursing Nigeria because we are Nigeria! The problem of a nation dose not rest on the nation but on its people.

Good Luck Obi! With your thing but please think safety first and follow the rules.

Inside India's rat temple where 20,000 of them are worshipped, fed and protected as they scurry between the feet of tourists

2014-02-25T12:52:00.001+00:00

An Indian temple is overrun with more than 20,000 rats - and the devotees couldn't be happier.

The Karni Mata Temple in Rajasthan, India, is known for its devotion to the furry animals, often seen as the scourge of urban areas.

Rats scurry throughout the temple, where they are worshipped, fed and protected.

Devotees have even gone to extreme lengths to protect the species by building netting and grills to keep out predators such as raptors.

Putting faith in his furry friends: A child watches a group of rats drinking milk in the rat temple in Rajasthan, India, which is home to around 20,000 of the creatures

Rodent ritual: Worshipers believe the rats are an incarnation of the Goddess Karni Mata whose statue is pictured (above) in the temple

VIP treatment: The rats are allowed to scurry through the temple, where they are worshipped, fed and protected

Surender Sharma, a visitor, said: This is my first visit to this temple. There is no history of plague in this area, despite the presence of rats for many years. People come here to worship rats as god.'

The rodents move freely within the temple and can be seen eating from a huge metal bowl of milk and grains, placed there daily by devotees.

Small children can be seen playing and interacting with the rats - while scores of tourists flock there each day to catch a glimpse of the unique spectacle.

Many visitors offer sweets and other candy to the vermin. The food nibbled by the rats is also considered holy and is sometimes consumed by a devotee - even if it has been half eaten by rodents.

Hands-on experience: A worshipper feeds one of the rats, which are known as kabbas. Many travel great distances to visit the temple

Not for the faint-hearted: A close-up of a rat eating a peanut. Eating food that has been nibbled on by the rats is considered to be a high honour

In every nook and cranny: Two rats (left) are seen climbing on a door at the rat temple in Rajasthan, India. Pictured (right) is the Goddess Karni Mata

Savita Sharma, another visitor, said: 'I keep visiting this temple. The first time I visited this place I was glad to see rats all around. But I did scream out loudly when a rat touched my foot.'

While black and brown rats are easily spotted in the temple courtyard, devotees believe sighting a white rat is a blessing.

DC Mishra said: 'I have come to see rats and white rat is considered lucky. If someone see's a white rat then he or she gets good luck and the blessings of god. I am glad that I have seen a white rat.'

Star attraction: Hundreds of people queue to offer their prayers at the temple in Rajasthan, India, where the rats are worshipped

Paying their respects: The temple draws visitors from across the country for blessings as well as curious tourists from around the world

Priests at the temple treat the furry inhabitants with serious devotion and warn visitors to walk carefully within the temple premises to avoid trampling them.

According to the temple rules, stepping accidentally on rat and killing it is a sin.

The perpetrator is then bound to buy a gold or silver rat statue and place it in the temple as a payment of sin.

Ritual: People seen preparing food in a huge cauldron. Charan priests perform Mangla-Ki-Aarti and offer special food to the rats as worship

Shrine: This Hindu temple was constructed by Maharaja Ganga Singh in the early 1900s as a tribute to the rat goddess Karni Mata

Pretty girl seeking a rich husband got a shocking Investment banker's reply

2014-02-20T17:11:00.002+00:00

Not sure if a CEO has the time to reply to such things, but this is surely fun to read!lol

A young and pretty lady posted this on a popular forum:

Title: What should I do to marry a rich guy?

I’m going to be honest of what I’m going to say here. I’m 25 this year. I’m very pretty, have style and good taste. I wish to marry a guy with $500k annual salary or above. You might say that I’m greedy, but an annual salary of $1M is considered only as middle class in New York.

My requirement is not high. Is there anyone in this forum who has an income of $500k annual salary? Are you all married? I wanted to ask: what should I do to marry rich persons like you?

Among those I’ve dated, the richest is $250k annual income, and it seems that this is my upper limit.
If someone is going to move into high cost residential area on the west of New York City Garden(?), $250k annual income is not enough.

I’m here humbly to ask a few questions:

1) Where do most rich bachelors hang out? (Please list down the names and addresses of bars, restaurant, gym)
2) Which age group should I target?
3) Why most wives of the riches are only average-looking? I’ve met a few girls who don’t have looks and are not interesting, but they are able to marry rich guys.
4) How do you decide who can be your wife, and who can only be your girlfriend? (my target now is to get married)
Ms. Pretty

A philosophical reply from CEO of J.P. Morgan when you continue!

Dear Ms. Pretty,
I have read your post with great interest. Guess there are lots of girls out there who have similar questions like yours. Please allow me to analyse your situation as a professional investor.
My annual income is more than $500k, which meets your requirement, so I hope everyone believes that I’m not wasting time here.
From the standpoint of a business person, it is a bad decision to marry you. The answer is very simple, so let me explain.

Put the details aside, what you’re trying to do is an exchange of “beauty" and “money" : Person A provides beauty, and Person B pays for it, fair and square.
However, there’s a deadly problem here, your beauty will fade, but my money will not be gone without any good reason. The fact is, my income might increase from year to year, but you can’t be prettier year after year.

Hence from the viewpoint of economics, I am an appreciation asset, and you are a depreciation asset. It’s not just normal depreciation, but exponential depreciation. If that is your only asset, your value will be much worse 10 years later.

By the terms we use in Wall Street, every trading has a position, dating with you is also a “trading position".
If the trade value dropped we will sell it and it is not a good idea to keep it for long term - same goes with the marriage that you wanted. It might be cruel to say this, but in order to make a wiser decision any assets with great depreciation value will be sold or “leased".

Anyone with over $500k annual income is not a fool; we would only date you, but will not marry you. I would advice that you forget looking for any clues to marry a rich guy. And by the way, you could make yourself to become a rich person with $500k annual income. This has better chance than finding a rich fool.

Hope this reply helps.

Britain asked to apologise for creating northern Nigeria's woes during colonial era

2014-02-18T12:37:00.003+00:00

NEW York civil society organisation the Gatestone Institute has called on Britain to apologise to Nigeria because the problems and tensions across the north of the country today are direct results of the British colonial government's hangover. Britain created Nigeria by conquering the various nationalities that made up the country and on January 1 1914, it amalgamated the northern and southern protectorates to form one nation. However, under Britain's indirect rule policy, northern Nigeria was denied the same access to education that prevailed in the south, creating a developmental gulf. Because Britain devolved administration to feudal oligarchs across northern Nigeria, there was limited missionary activity there, resulting in less education and opportunity. This gulf remains just as wide as it was then and the troubles have spilled into the open, resulting in the Boko Haram insurgency whereby deprived and helpless northern youths have embraced Islamic terrorism. At a workshop for leaders of ethnic minorities in the north held in Abuja, Alan Craig, the Gatestone Institute's representative said Britain should accept responsibility for the crisis. He added that Britain had no choice than to apologise to Nigerians following the sad fallouts of colonialism. Mr Craig said: "This type of grassroots work is significant for the people in the villages and we hope to help the local people to have a voice. We want to support ordinary people to have a voice and we are always on the side of the minorities. “The problems of northern Nigeria are direct results of left-over's by the British government and therefore the tension and difficulties in northern Nigeria are a direct result of the British colonialism. My argument now is that the British government should be rectifying the situation by contributing instead of telling the Nigerian government about the gay rights laws, for instance." Organised by the Minority Interests Rights Project (Mirp) and the Stefanos Foundation of Nigeria, the workshop sought to discuss solutions to the Islamic insurgency across northern Nigeria. At the event, Mirp coordinator Mark Lipdo, revealed that 75% of the indigenes of southern Borno State had fled to Cameroon following the recent attack on them by Boko Haram. Mr Craig added: “Britain should be saying we are sorry for the legacy we left and other things we did, although there are other good things the then British colonial government did too. So, don’t condemn it all but that particular aspect was wrong and was a mistake, so the British government should be rectifying it.” At the event, Mr Lipdo also expressed reservations over the 20 slots given to Nigeria's ethnic minorities in the forthcoming National Dialogue. He added that in his opinion, the number was too low, given that there will be a total of 492 delegates at the summit. Mr Lipdo said that ethnic minority groups across northern Nigeria believed that the insurgency and attacks by herdsmen on their communities were deliberate plans to expel them from their homes and take over their lands. He expressed fears that the forthcoming conference might not give the minority groups the needed opportunity to speak out.

Tube Strike Backfires As Commuters Steal Train Keys And Drive Themselves

2014-02-06T18:52:00.000+00:00

THE London tube strike ended abruptly last night after commuters stormed trains and instantly mastered the controls.

Remember to stop when you get to one of these

The latest walk-out was prompted by concerns over reduced staffing levels in ticket offices, or pay, or the withdrawal of Quavers from canteen vending machines masquerading as some bullshit about safety.

But the action backfired when a group of frustrated would-be travellers stole keys and entered train cabs to discover that tube driving mainly involves pressing a button.

Civilian hijacker, Martin Bishop, said: “When we got in the cab we discovered there was just one button. A big, red button like a clown’s nose.

“You press it once to stop, once to go. And the train itself is on rails, so you don’t have to worry about steering.

“I thought to myself, ‘I can probably handle this’.”

He added: “Basically, working a train is not that hard and if I was getting forty grand a year to do it I’d probably keep my head down, perhaps even do cockney-style sing-a-longs over the PA to keep everyone sweet.

“In Paris they don’t even have human drivers, it’s all automatic and inside the cabs there’s just a baguette with a cap stuck on it.”

Meanwhile, other angry civilians broke into ticket offices and immediately began operating them in a friendly and polite manner.

Disgruntled punter Emma Bradford said: “Apparently reducing ticket office staffing levels in stations would make them less safe. But, while I can understand that in principle, last time I went to the ticket window and asked for a Zone 2 Travelcard, the man looked at me as if I’d just offered to fill his hat with some of my shit.

“So on that basis, I’m not entirely sure the same person could be relied upon to help if my hair was on fire.”

McDonald's reveal EXACTLY what is in their chicken nuggets (note: it's not pink goop)

2014-02-04T17:22:00.001+00:00

It's an image that has never gone away since it was first circulated in 2010 - a huge pouring of synthetic pink soft serve-like matter falling into a cardboard box that was purportedly the filling on McDonald's Chicken McNuggets.

And, despite announcements time and time again the ubiquitous image of pink goop had nothing to do with McDonald's, the fast food giant continues to try to dispel the myth.

This week the world's largest restaurant chain released a video that was filmed inside one of their nugget factories in Cargill, Canada.

It purports to detail the start-to-finish process of how McDonald's manufactures their best-selling snacks.

The image that sparked an outrage: This photo, first circulated in 2010, purported to show the filling of McDonald's Chicken McNuggets. The fast food giant continues to try and dispel the myth

Step one: Workers start to de-bone the raw chickens

According to McDonald's the chicken meat is separated because only the breast is used in their nuggets

The breast meat is then collected and prepared for shredding

The breast meat is mixed with seasoning and chicken skin and put through a shredder, as seen here

The resultant mixture is then further blended

The process starts with the chickens being de-boned and the breast meat separated.

McDonald's maintains that only breast meat is used in their nuggets.

The meat is then shredded before being mixed in with seasoning and chicken skin.

McDonalds' Canada chain supply manager Nicoletta Stefou shows a picture of the infamous 'pink goop' photo on an iPad at one point to show how it differs from the 'real' mixture.

The meat is then cut into the four nugget shapes - the bell, the ball, the boot and the bow tie.

They are twice battered and partially fried.

The nuggets will be properly cooked at the restaurant outlets in deep fryers.

Finally, they are bagged, boxed, frozen and shipped.

As of 2012, there are more than 33,000 restaurants around the world, in 118 countries.

More 14,000 of those restaurants are in the United States.

The key to longevity depends on your SEX: Sleep is crucial for men while women need plenty of vitamin B6 and vegetables

2014-02-04T17:22:00.000+00:00

As if they needed any more excuse, new research suggests men need their sleep if they’re to live a long life.

Women, on the other hand, can live long lives despite poor sleep habits as long as they eat a diverse diet that includes vitamin B6 and plenty of vegetables.

Vitamin B6 can be found in food such as meat, bananas, nuts, garlic and pistachios. Among other things, it allows the body to use and store energy from protein and carbohydrates.

Good sleep patterns can help men live longer, but women will only benefit if they also have a diverse diet

The findings come from a study led by Melbourne-based Monash University which looked at how diet contributed to sleep quality and mortality among elderly men and women.

Emeritus Professor Mark Wahlqvist from Monash University said sleep played a more important role in men’s mortality than women’s.

'Poor sleep has been associated with increased morbidity and mortality including obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease and coronary heart disease,' he said.

‘We found that for both genders, poor sleep was strongly correlated with poor appetite and poor perceived health.'

But the researchers also found a significant relationship between a diverse diet and sleep, particularly in women.

‘For women, good sleep only provides a survival advantage if they had a diverse diet,’ said Professor Wahlqvist.

The study found women were almost twice as likely as men to sleep badly.

Women who were poor sleepers had a lower intake of vitamin B6 from food than those whose sleep was rated 'fair' or 'good'. Fair sleepers had lower iron intakes than good sleepers.

Both men and women could improve their outlook by eating a more varied diet, the research said.

‘Sufficient dietary diversity in men could offset the adverse effect on mortality of poor sleep while women need to make sure they are eating foods high in vitamin B6,’ said Professor Walhqvist.

Participants in the study who did not sleep well were also less able to chew, had poor appetites, and did less physical activity.

‘These characteristics could contribute to lower overall dietary quality and food and nutrient intake, especially for vegetables, protein-rich foods, and vitamin B6,’ Professor Wahlqvist said.

‘They may also contribute to the risk of death, either in their own right or together with problematic sleep. Intervention focusing on education on healthy dietary practices in elderly people could improve sleep duration and provide more stable levels of health.’

The study was conducted on 1865 elderly men and women who were a part of the Nutrition and Health survey in Taiwan. The data was collected from 1999-2000.

Man arrested after allegedly threatening to kill George W. Bush

2014-02-02T21:23:00.002+00:00

New York (CNN) -- A New York man armed with a rifle, boxes of ammunition and a machete was arrested Friday after allegedly threatening to kill former President George W. Bush, according to a

federal court complaint.

Benjamin Smith, a resident of upstate New York, threatened to "kill, kidnap and inflict bodily harm" on Bush, the complaint said.

Smith also professed a love interest in Barbara, one of the former president's twin daughters, according to the complaint filed Friday in U.S. District Court in Manhattan.

"Bush will get his," Smith allegedly screamed as he was being arrested, said the complaint.

The U.S. Secret Service was alerted to the threat after Smith's mother found a note in the home they share in which he allegedly wrote that he's "going to work for George W. Bush and the Pentagon," the complaint said.

Smith also allegedly wrote: "I have to slay a dragon and then Barbara Bush is mine... America is finished. Obama, Etc."

Smith's defense lawyer, Peggy Cross-Goldenberg, did not immediately return a call seeking comment. It was not clear whether Smith remained in custody Saturday evening.

Smith's mother reported that a rifle was missing from the house and that she did not know where her son was.

Using cell phone tracking, the Secret Service located Smith, who they say had driven to Manhattan.

On Friday, agents found Smith sitting in his car in Manhattan, with a loaded .38-caliber rifle, two boxes of ammunition, a container of gasoline and a machete, according to authorities.

During questioning, Smith told Secret Service agents, "I'm divorced and not currently seeing anyone, but I am working on a relationship with Barbara Bush," the complaint said.

Threats against presidents of the United States are a federal crime.

5 Simple Ways to Increase Your Intelligence

2014-02-02T12:23:00.000+00:00

1. Minimize Television Watching – This is a hard sell. People love vegetating in front of the television, myself included more often than I’d like. The problem is watching television doesn’t use your mental capacity OR allow it to recharge. It’s like having the energy sapped out of a muscle without the health benefits of exercise.
When you feel like relaxing, try reading a book instead. If you’re too tired, listen to some music. When you’re with your friends or family, leave the tube off and have a conversation. All of these things use your mind more than television and allow you to relax.

2. Exercise – I used to think that I’d learn more by not exercising and using the time to read a book instead. But I realized that time spent exercising always leads to greater learning because it improves productivity during the time afterwards. Using your body clears your head and creates a wave of energy. Afterwards, you feel invigorated and can concentrate more easily.

3. Read Challenging Books – Many people like to read popular suspense fiction, but generally these books aren’t mentally stimulating. If you want to improve your thinking and writing ability you should read books that make you focus. Reading a classic novel can change your view of the world and will make you think in more precise, elegant English. Don’t be afraid to look up a word if you don’t know it, and don’t be afraid of dense passages. Take your time, re-read when necessary, and you’ll soon grow accustomed to the author’s style.

Once you get used to reading challenging books, I think you’ll find that you aren’t tempted to go back to page-turners. The challenge of learning new ideas is far more exciting than any tacky suspense-thriller.

4. Early to Bed, Early to Rise – Nothing makes it harder to concentrate than sleep deprivation. You’ll be most rejuvenated if you go to bed early and don’t sleep more than 8 hours. If you stay up late and compensate by sleeping late, you’ll wake up lethargic and have trouble focusing. In my experience the early morning hours are the most tranquil and productive. Waking up early gives you more productive hours and maximizes your mental acuity all day.

If you have the opportunity, take 10-20 minute naps when you are hit with a wave of drowsiness. Anything longer will make you lethargic, but a short nap will refresh you.

5. Take Time to Reflect – Often our lives get so hectic that we become overwhelmed without even realizing it. It becomes difficult to concentrate because nagging thoughts keep interrupting. Spending some time alone in reflection gives you a chance organize your thoughts and prioritize your responsibilities. Afterwards, you’ll have a better understanding of what’s important and what isn’t. The unimportant stuff won’t bother you anymore and your mind will feel less encumbered.

I’m not saying you need to sit on the floor cross-legged and chant ‘ommm’. Anything that allows a bit of prolonged solitude will do. One of my personal favorites is taking a solitary walk. Someone famous said, “All the best ideas occur while walking.” I think he was on to something. Experiment to find the activity that works best for you.

'We almost lost our lives': Woman possessed by demons in 'portal to hell' house that terrified even the police chief reveals new details of her family's terrifying ordeal

2014-02-02T09:00:00.000+00:00

A woman whose horrific experience living in an Indiana home that she and even city police are convinced was a haunted 'portal to hell' has spoken out on her paranormal trauma and what it was like to be a family possessed.

Latoya Ammons says she has seen her own daughter levitate off a bed, her son walk up a wall so effortlessly that even a psychiatrist was at a loss and was herself the victim of demonic possession in what appears to be an average home in the Gary community near where Michael Jackson grew up.

'Me and my mother and my children, we almost lost our lives,' said Ammons, whose undeniably terrifying experience left her chilled to her core and now has an entire nation captivated by her spectral tale.

Terrifying ordeal: 32-year-old Latoya Ammons is speaking out about the demons that held her family hostage in their Indiana home and whose story has now captivated the nation

Ghastly figure: Ammons' ordeal is made all the more believable by her own earnest recounting, the Gary police chief's chilling account of the haunting and an undeniably photo from the police themselves that shows what could well be a ghost in the home's window

Ammons sat with Inside Edition for a deeply earnest interview in which she makes abundantly clear that her ordeal was no Casper the ghost made real.

'This was obviously demons,' she said. 'Not just random spirits. There is a difference.'

Ammons' unwavering eyes speak volumes about how truly real the haunting became for the family.

'I know it was infested with demons. I know that for a fact,' she said. 'I spoke to a good friend of mine, he was clairvoyant. He's in New York. He explained to me what was going on in the house.'

And what was going on was like something out of Polturegeist or The Exorcist. Only those terrible things were truly happening to Ammons and her family.

And Ammons' clairvoyant friend correctly foretold that things would only get worse.

'He told me the house was infested with demons and to get my children out of the house,' she said. 'And if I knew what I was up against, I would run and drop everything.'

A particularly scary bout with the demons had the family rushing to the emergency room as Ammons 9-year-old son was in the grips of possession and Ammons has revealed that even physicians were terrified.

When the family got to the hospital, her son 'walked up the wall and did a backwards flip and threw her into the wall and started headbutting her and they had to grab him and hold him

'The doctor from the psych ward said, "that's not real, that's not human. No human can do what that little boy just did."'

Portal to Hell: Rosa Campbell, Latoya's mother, gives police a tour of the basement that was said to be the base of the demons that possessed the family

Both are now convinced it is a demonic rasp, issuing a welcome or a challenge as they stood unwittingly on the lip of a ‘portal to hell.’

At one point, Latoya Ammons’s mother, Rosa Campbell, who acted as ‘paranormal tour guide’ to the officers drawn from Gary, Lake County and Hammond Police Departments, admitted saying to her daughter: ‘Nobody’s going to believe this, Toya.’

Certainly few involved in the case wanted to when it began in early spring 2012. But today, the veteran police officers, experienced physicians, paramedics, nurses, social workers and clergy linked to the case speak of being ‘attacked’ by demons, profoundly shaken and left with little choice but to believe that ‘something’ possessed the 32-year-old mother-of-three and the rented home in which she, her children and her mother, lived from November 2011 until May 2012.

As she showed the investigating officers, accompanied by social worker Valerie Washington, around the home in May 2012, Rose repeatedly stopped to recall the events which had, by that time, driven the family from the residence.

Standing in the kitchen she claimed: ‘I heard dogs barking, it sounded like there were dogs barking in here.’ The family had no pets. And when she investigated she saw, ‘A shadow of somebody moving.’

Downstairs in the basement, a focus for much of the disturbances, Rosa recalled an occasion on which she was down there alone doing some cleaning: ‘I started coughing and joking so bad…I was praying the whole time and they don’t like for us to pray. They don’t like that at all.

‘Something down there was choking me to death, I don’t know what it is.’

'I was praying the whole time and they don’t like for us to pray. They don’t like that at all. Something down there was choking me to death, I don’t know what it is' - Rosa Campbell

On another occasion she said that her daughter, Latoya and godson were in the basement when, according to Rosa: ‘He felt like something was stabbing him in the stomach. The more he was was reading the Bible, the more it was stabbing, punching... they saw something flying across the room and land “blam” like that.’

Rosa reached for the object she claimed had been flung by some demonic force – a small Holy Family ornament.

She also said that her daughter had told her that, as the force had grown in power she had seen it’s full manifestation in her bedroom one night. ‘She said it was like a scary, ugly, black monster… she couldn’t say anything else.’

Two of them most disturbing physical manifestations were witnessed by several medics and law enforcement officials.

The first, Rosa recalled, was during a visit to family physician Dr Geoffrey Onyekum on 19 April 2012. Both focused on the youngest child, then 7. She recalled: ‘I saw “it” trying to come out [of him]. It was trying to break loose in front of the doctor.

Mail Online Reports: Spraying bullets from an AK-47, the four-year-old Al Qaeda fighter in Syria who should be in infants’ school

2014-02-02T01:51:00.003+00:00

He is barely old enough to go to infant school, let alone fight in a savage civil war.

Yet this youngster, believed to be just four years old, is one of the latest ‘cub jihadists’ recruited for bloody battle in Syria.

He can be seen firing rounds from an automatic assault rifle in a shocking video that has emerged from the war-torn country.

Scroll down for video

Assault rifle: Alarming footage appears to show a child, believed to be four years old, shooting an AK-47 as the reliance on children on the Syrian bloodbath continues. The footage was posted online by a jihadist group

Children of war: The boy will have lived almost his whole life through the Syrian conflict, though with his high voice and chubby cheeks, he belongs more in infants' school than on a battlefield

Counter-terrorism officials say it is further evidence of how jihadists are grooming children to become fighters, as Al Qaeda factions strive to establish a Taliban-like Islamic state in Syria.

The disturbing footage was posted on YouTube and is believed to be that of a son of a jihadist from Albania who is one of thousands of foreigners fighting with Al Qaeda in Syria.

The youngster, who wears a black ski mask, can be seen firing shots from a black AK-47-style automatic assault rifle with a folding stock.

He is so small that the barrel of the gun has to be supported by a section of road block so that he can cope with its weight.

The child opens fire to shouts of Allahu Akbar – Arabic for ‘God is Greater’ – before an arm reaches down and retrieves the weapon.

Warfare: The footage comes amid warnings that up to 700 young British extremists are fighting in Syria

War games: The video shows the child smiling and talking in his native language with the adults filming him

The video emerged as French President Francois Hollande yesterday claimed as many as 700 Britons are among extremists fighting in the Syrian civil war.

Speaking at a press conference after talks with David Cameron, the president said: ‘We have young people who live in our respective countries who are being manipulated, and they are going off to the combat areas.

‘Today we were exchanging figures – 600 to 700 young people are involved in each of our countries.’

That is almost double the most recent estimate by experts and comes amid ‘huge concern’ from security chiefs that the young jihadists will target Britain when they return from fighting in Syria.

The video of the four-year-old first emerged on January 21 on a YouTube channel operated by a jihadist who claimed to be based in northern Syria. It was entitled in Arabic: ‘A message from one of the cubs of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant.’

The footage was removed after it was exposed by an American-based ‘anti-jihad’ activist who claimed it was evidence of child abuse.

Copies of the video, however, remained in circulation on other online channels.

Suspected British Al Qaeda fighters in Syria have been circulating other images showing children being trained to use deadly weapons in a jihad training camp.

The pictures showed children aged between nine and 15 in full battle dress and wearing black ski masks bearing the distinctive logo of Al Qaeda.

Many were seen holding Kalashnikov automatic assault rifles, tripod-mounted heavy machine guns and rocket-propelled grenades.

The video of the toddler emerged just days after the European Union’s anti-terror coordinator warned that social media websites play a crucial role in recruiting foreign fighters to travel to Syria.

Shocking: More photos show children as young as nine at a training camp toting guns and wearing ski masks

Top counter-terrorism officer Sir Peter Fahy said British fighters arriving from Syria posed a threat to the UK

Gilles de Kerchove told the Home Affairs Select Committee that online messages, many posted by ‘narcissistic youths posing with AK-47 rifles, had contributed to an acceleration in the number of Europeans, including Britons, travelling to Syria to fight – with many falling in with extremist groups.

The issue – which has become a key focus for the security and intelligence services – was among topics discussed by Mr Hollande and Mr Cameron. Syria is proving a popular training ground for would-be jihadists.

Sir Peter Fahy, Chief Constable of Greater Manchester Police – who leads the Association of Chief Police Officer’s ‘Prevent’ strategy on counter-terrorism – told the BBC this week there was ‘huge concern’ that Britons arriving back after fighting in Syria posed a threat to the UK.

Scotland Yard has also said its biggest concern is that some could return as terrorists.

In the past month, 16 people have been arrested on suspicion of terror offences after travelling between Syria and the UK.

This compares with 24 in the whole of 2013.

Apparently, I Love Beer More Than I Love My Daughter

2014-02-01T16:51:00.001+00:00

Not long ago, while we were out shopping, my 3-year-old daughter asked if I would buy her a book about Elmo. I said we couldn't afford it, and pried it from her tiny hands.

I've recently determined that this was a big fat lie. An accounting of my spending, conducted in a fit of attempted financial responsibility, reveals that when I told my daughter we couldn't afford the book, what I meant was that I'd rather spend that money on something else. That something, in most instances, is beer.

The week I turned down my daughter's request I bought two rounds of drinks at a bar ($30), two six-packs of beer at a deli ($24) and a growler of craft beer at a local specialty shop ($13).

If you are like me, you might be thinking that beer is a magic and delicious elixir that helps one manage the stresses of parenthood. And for sure, this is not an excess on the level of a$75,000 strip club Bacchanalia.

The problem is that my penchant for pricey IPAs and local craft brews has come at the expense of my daughter's future.

Using sophisticated graphing technology, I created this chart that shows the disparity between how much my wife and I (mostly me) spent on beer, and how much we deposited into our daughter's college savings fund, over the first three weeks of January:

To date, we have deposited exactly $326.77 into her college savings fund. And I think that money came from her grandmother.

It's not all bad news: my daughter does have a separate college savings account funded by a family friend. But with costs soaring, we are going to need much, much more. The cost of a four-year education that currently runs $100,000 will swell to $224,000 in 15 years, assuming prices increase at the present clip.

And that calculus assumes she enrolls at a mid-priced state university, such as Auburn University or the University of Missouri, the two schools I attended.

Assuming a 6 percent return on investment, we would need to put away $626 a month to afford either of those colleges. Here's the breakdown:

At this point, my wife insists that I also mention the following: that she has packed her own lunch every day for 12 years, that she doesn't own a smart phone and that we eat dinner out only once or twice a month. Aside from my beer habit, we are otherwise relatively frugal people.

Still, we can obviously do better. Our new budget calls for cutting in half spending in two categories -- alcohol and coffee (line item: "stimulants and depressants") and putting that money into a college fund.

We also plan to save more for retirement and put more money into a home buying fund.

The reality for our family, like many others, is that saving as much as we would need to fully fund our daughter's college education, while also tending to other long-term savings goals, doesn't seem feasible. There's a reason why the total amount of outstanding student debt in the U.S. now exceeds $1 trillion.

It's enough to make one want a strong drink. Too bad that I can't afford one until May.Please Share

'It's like a cleanse for your body and mind' 'Vomit Painter' throws up on canvas to create Jackson Pollock-style splatter paintings that Lady Gaga loves

Millie Brown, 27, drinks coloured milk and regurgitates liquid over a canvas
Appeared in Lady Gaga's music video
Starves herself for two days before creating piece
Leaves month-long gaps between each performance
Says it doesn't affect her health
Showcasing work at Ripley's Believe It Or Not
We all know that some artists put their blood, sweat and tears into their creations, but one woman has taken it one step further - by using her own vomit.

Cutting edge artist, Millie Brown, began pushing the boundaries of the art world after becoming sick - literally - of using more traditional methods of painting.

The eccentric artist - whose unique work features in Ripley’s Believe it or Not! - uses a selection of dyed soy milk in a mixture of colours which she then swallows at various intervals, one at a time, before vomiting it onto a white canvas.

Why You'll Want A 3D Printer In Your Home

2014-01-31T20:13:00.000+00:00

When it comes to 3D printing, there are two types of people.

There are those who say, “How convenient! I can 3D print new paper clips whenever I run out. And it only takes two minutes to print each one!”

And there are those who say, “I can order 1,000 paper clips on Amazon Prime and have them arrive tomorrow—no expensive machine required.”

But devotees and skeptics alike get one thing right: 3D printing continues to sit at the juncture between novelty and practicality. It makes sense for some uses, but hasn’t yet proven itself to be a technology we can’t live without.

Even the most cynical of us can acknowledge that 3D printing is capable of change on a global scale. 3D printing could boost manufacturing productivity if warehouses adopt it. On the medical front, it’s already being used to create functional, affordable prosthetics in Uganda.

At the Consumer Electronics Show this January, companies showed off their 3D-printed wares like useless plastic tzotchkes, models, and toys. But once the gimmick of printing something out of plastic wears off, the question remains—why do we need these in our homes again?

Larry Crenshaw, AT&T's "director of strategic messaging," told ReadWrite his company invested in a relationship with 3D printing company Cubify because it strongly believes that a more useful era of 3D printing is already on the way.

“Today it’s novelty, tomorrow it’s tools and things you need,” Crenshaw said.

3D Printing Comes Home

At AT&T’s Innovation Center in Washington D.C., Crenshaw demoed the Cubify for a group of reporters, including me. He passed around a juicer, a paper clip, labeled plant stakes, and other minor practical objects for us to see. He also passed around models of the Washington Monument, which admittedly, weren't practical in the slightest.

Some of Crenshaw's 3D prints.
Some of Crenshaw's 3D prints.
The reason companies rarely demo functional 3D prints, he said, is because they take a long time to create, and sometimes, they consist of multiple parts that later need to be fused together. The more time you’re willing to spend on 3D part printing and assembly, the more practical a 3D printer starts to become.

These plans all came from Thingiverse, Makerbot’s hub for free, Creative Commons-licensed 3D models. Anyone with a 3D printer can create anything from the site: Thingiverse has a section for household goods, as well as one for more challenging, multi-part models with larger payoffs like cameras and functional robots. Now that newer 3D printer models have dual cartridges, it's possible to print multicolored objects and, eventually, multi-fiber objects out of materials other than plastic.

It's important to realize that to get something truly useful out of a 3D printer, it requires your own labor and time—from adjusting models to specific sizes or shapes, to printing multiple pieces and then assembling them. 3D printing is certainly no Star Trek replicator, spitting out fully formed, complicated items in a matter of minutes—at least not yet.

For this reason, it's easy to see why the emerging technology of 3D printing seems like a step into the past. It could be difficult for companies to grasp why anyone, aside from makers or hobbyists, would want a device that requires so much effort on the user's part. 3D printing does not immediately meet customers' every need, at least by default, so its tempting to say that it never will.

But time and again, we've seen large corporations reject emerging technologies simply because they're not there yet.

In "Disruptive Technologies: Catching the Wave," authors Joseph L. Bower and Clayton M. Christensen note that Xerox let Canon create small desktop copiers because it couldn't imagine why customers would need them. Granted, back then, desktop scanners were slower and clunkier than they are today, but it still seems like a huge oversight considering that hardly any of us still use the oversized copiers of the past. The lesson here is that large companies aren't always right about technologies, and what they consider "novelties" could turn out to be the next big thing.

Crenshaw brought up the example of cell phone texting: Once the realm of tweens, texting was seen as a step backward in technology from talking on the phone. But it soon became so popular, even corporations now embrace SMS.

“It was a trend with tweens, but companies looked down on it,” he said. “Now, everyone texts. Will 3D printing follow the same roadmap? It could be.”

My guess for the "hidden use" of 3D printing? Absolute and total customization.

We're all different people with different needs; why shouldn't our physical stuff be just as original as we are? Sure it's easier to order paper clips from Amazon Prime today. But perhaps my personal inclinations might sway me toward printing office supplies in a variety of shapes, sizes, and colors that fit me and my tasks perfectly. Perhaps the new luxury will be to tailor our things the way celebrities tailor each and every one of their outfits.

As 3D printing becomes cheaper and faster—today it took Crenshaw one hour and twenty minutes to print this hollow citrus juicer—the cult of convenience won't even need to make way for the cult of personalization. And once you've gotten used to literally creating your environment according to your exact specifications, it could be hard to go back to wearing the same jewelry and buying the same interior furnishings as everyone else on the block.

You should never underestimate the human ego. And that's exactly why it's foolish to underestimate 3D printing

The chastity bra that only opens when you find true love – or so they say

2014-01-31T15:03:00.002+00:00

Japanese lingerie brand has unveiled a 'smart bra' that claims to 'know how women truly feel', remaining locked until its wearer falls in love

The stakes are getting increasingly high in the battle for the weirdest piece of wearable tech. After wifi-detecting hats and smartphone-charging wellies, it was only a matter of time until it all turned to sex – with the arrival of vibrating knickers, dresses that turn transparent, and aGoogle Glass app that lets you imagine you're having sex with yourself.

Scroll Down For Video

Now, saucy Japanese lingerie brand Ravijour has upped the ante with a bra that pops open when you discover true love. Like a chastity belt for the social network age, the bra remains firmly locked shut most of the time, to defend its wearer from the hordes of sleazy menfolk trying to weasel their way in. But as soon as Prince Charming arrives, it dutifully bursts open with a gleeful spring, saving clumsy fumbling in the bedroom – and potentially taking his eye out in the process.

“When we fall in love, we experience an instant boost in excitement,” says the company's in-house Human Sexuality Specialist in the promotional video. “That feeling is unlike any other excitement we encounter in life.”

Then comes the science bit: “When excited, the adrenal medulla secretes catecholamine,” announces a man in a white coat, called Doctor. “This affects the automatic nerve and stimulates the heart rate.”

A cunning sensor built into the bra detects the wearer's heart rate and sends it to a special smartphone app for analysis, via Bluetooth. The app then calculates the “True Love Rate” based on changes in the heart rate over time. When this rate exceeds a certain value – hey-presto! – the hook opens.

“Until now, the bra was a just piece of clothing to remove,” says the smart-bra's creator, “but now it is an instrument to test for true love … destined to become a friend of women around the world.”

A friend, that is, until the bra decides to fling itself open when you're running for the bus. It might also get a bit annoying when you're watching a scary movie, if it keeps popping undone when the tension mounts. It's probably not the bra for a job interview either. Or if ever – shock horror – you want to have sex with someone you don't actually love.

As tech companies creep deeper into our homes, their eyes ever more on our bedrooms, we can no doubt look forward to bedsheets that post our performance to Facebook and condoms that send a celebratory climactic tweet. Or maybe they'll burst open too, when they can tell that you really want to have kids.

The hilarious Russian marriage snaps that show how NOT to take a wedding photo

2014-01-31T13:51:00.000+00:00

It's supposed to be the happiest day of your life, so what better way to celebrate your wedding than by posing as centaurs to demonstrate your love? Or riding a giant swan? Or perhaps fleeing a fire-throwing Transformer?

From the crude, to the rude, to the downright bizarre, this collection of images of provincial Russians getting married show exactly how not to take wedding photographs.

Several are carefully choreographed pictures that turn out to be absurd the moment the posing is over, yet they remain in the family albums for posterity.

Their special neigh: This happy couple couldn't stop horsing around throughout their wedding ceremony

A good rear to marry: This bride needed a well-earned nap after the ordeal of getting married (apparently)

Baguette me to the church on time: This bride knows exactly which side her bread is buttered

Young love: This couple couldn't get to the honeymoon suite soon enough

Thigh do! The photographer couldn't wait to start the shoot whether the brides stockings were on or not

Holy pond of marriage: This wedding was ruined by a giant swan who swooped in and whisked the happy couple off for an early honeymoon... at their local park

Always the bridesmaid: This bridesmaid was keen to show her frustration at never being the centre of attention herself

Others seem to be the newly betrothed wife seeking to show who is the boss after the nuptials.

Cars feature strongly - in one picture the couple's faces are superimposed on the wheels as they begin the journey on the family road to happiness.

To have and too cold: This bride has her husband wrapped around her little finger

Stupid's arrow: This bride was more concerned about snaring herself a groomsman than she was about her dress

Wee do: This photo raises more questions than it answers

The first chance: It wasn't long before this couple sneaked away for a bit of alone time

Who says a can of lager and a cigarette or putting a chair between your legs isn't classy?

Wedding cows: The groom at this wedding wanted nothing more than to celebrate by climbing a giant bull

Stay there! This photo isn't creepy at all

Give us a big kiss: There has been a huge rise in demand in recent years in Russia for mini brides

Does this dress make my bum look big? Even when all the groomsmen worked together, they couldn't get this bride to fit in her dress

Transformers in surprise: No one knew which way to turn when Optimus Prime arrived to give the bride away

A tyring day!: The congregation realised the car would need a push when the bride and groom turned into wheels

Criminal photography: The bridesmaid was inconsolable after she stumbled across the crime scene

Run for your wives: When the best man described the groom as larger than life, he didn't mean it literally

You are my strength: Her pre-wedding diet appeared to have paid off

Your love is like a giant mug: It's unclear exactly what point this picture is trying to make

Smile, we're framous: Despite every attempt to bring a touch of class to their wedding, he just couldn't take it seriously

Lenin me your ears: This couple were desperate to trumpet their union from under the statue of their favourite revolutionary

In most cases, though, you wouldn't know this is supposed to the happiest day of their lives, though one couple are look full of joy as they serenade a statue of Soviet founder Vladimir Lenin.

The popular blogger who goes under the name 'pryf' simply says 'How not to take wedding pictures', and his montage is spreading like wildfire round the web.

Devout Christian mother-of-three, 31, becomes first woman in Britain to DIE from cannabis poisoning after smoking a joint in bed to help her sleep

2014-01-31T12:50:00.003+00:00

Gemma Moss from Bouremouth, Dorset, is believed to have become the first woman in Britain to die directly from cannabis poisoning

A young mother of three died after she was poisoned by the cannabis she smoked to help her get to sleep.

Gemma Moss, 31, was killed by the level of the drug in her blood, an inquest heard.

The regular churchgoer, who was found dead in her bedroom, is thought to be the first woman in Britain known to have died directly from cannabis poisoning.

Her death was caused by cannabis toxicity, and a coroner recorded a verdict of death by cannabis abuse.

The inquest was told that Miss Moss smoked half a joint a night to help her sleep.

The devout Christian had been a frequent user but stopped for two years before her death last October.

Her family say she started using the drug again to help her sleep after becoming depressed when she split up with her boyfriend.

A female friend told police Miss Moss smoked as much as £60 worth of the drug a week, although her family disputed this.

On the night of October 28 last year Miss Moss, who had two sons, Tyler, 15, and Tessiah, eight, and a daughter who lives abroad, went to bed after rolling a joint.

She was found the following morning by Tyler’s girlfriend who called an ambulance to the flat in Bournemouth.
