How much would you pay to live and work in the USA?

If you’ve been born and raised somewhere else than the United States, you probably thought about moving out and living the American dream to the max. One of the easiest methods of immigration is through the Diversity Visa (DV) Lottery, a US government program that offers 50,000 United States Permanent Resident Cards per year.

The heavy demand of visas has tipped crooks all over the world to set up bogus U.S. government sites running this kind of “lotteries”. The idea behind this kind of scam is simple: set up a fake website, heavily optimize it for keywords such as “lottery”, “visa”, “green card”, give it an official look (graphic details, choice of words, headings and fonts all hint to a legit site…but it’s all fake!), then wait for unwary users to take the bait and fill in the form.

A couple of weeks later, the scammers send a batch of messages that the applicant has been awarded a visa and they have to pay a specific sum of money as visa processing fees. Since the message contains the applicant’s personal information and IP address, chances are they will fall for the trick and pay the fee or the fees. Read more...

Bitdefender Manual / Offline update

You can setting manual update under the Manual update settings.
Configure the Advanced options.

To prevent prompts asking for reboot, select Wait for reboot, instead of prompting.
Click Apply to save the settings.
Click Default to restore the default settings.

Occasional updates can be perfomed at any time, even when the product is set to update automaticaly:
Open BitDefender and click Update.

Click also Update at the top of the window if the Settings are displayed.
Click Update now to start the update process.

If the option Prompt before downloading updates was selected in the Settings, and when updates are available, a list of the updates available for download is displayed. Select the product to install and click Details to see the file download details. Select Switch to silent update (don't ask me again) to stop being prompted on manual update. Click OK to download and install the new files or Cancel to postpone the update.

Manually updating using weekly.exe

This method allows installing the latest Virus Definitions Update. To install the Product Updates upgrade to the latest version, or use Live! Update.

The update package weekly.exe is released every Friday and includes all the virus definitions and scan engines updates available up to the release date.
To update BitDefender using weekly.exe, follow these steps:

- Download this file (for 32bit operating systems) or this file (for 64bit operating systems) and save it locally on your harddisk.
- Double click the downloaded file to start the setup wizard.
- Click Next to begin the installation process.
- Check I accept the terms in the License Agreement and click Next.
- Press Install to begin installing.
- Press Finish to close the installation wizard.

Summary
Worm:Win32/Conficker.B is a worm that infects other computers across a network by exploiting a vulnerability in the Windows Server service (SVCHOST.EXE). If the vulnerability is successfully exploited, it could allow remote code execution when file sharing is enabled. It may also spread via removable drives and weak administrator passwords. It disables several important system services and security products.

Microsoft also recommends that users ensure that their network passwords are strong to prevent this worm from spreading via weak administrator passwords. More information is available here.

Microsoft also recommends that users apply an update that changes the AutoPlay functionality in Windows to prevent this worm from spreading via USB drives. More information is available in the Microsoft Knowledgebase Article KB971029.

Purpose

This tool acts much like a standard Ethernet network sniffer. However, unlike a traditional packet sniffer it doesn't attempt to capture and decode all traffic but instead is geared toward discovering useful infrastructure and security-related data from the network, often from traffic not sent to or from the host system i.e. general broadcast network traffic. This data can reveal all manner of useful information, ranging from live systems on the network, hostnames, Ipv6 systems, routers and name servers, user names and passwords.

Note that the tool is not comprehensive in the amount and range of information it gathers. Rather it goes to show that your network is constantly chattering away, unintentionally revealing vast amounts of useful information that could be utilized by an attacker. This tool highlights some of that data. This is the kind of information that was obtained by systems hit by the Aurora vulnerability (Ms10-002) affecting Microsoft's Internet Explorer web browser including for example, obtaining credentials to source control systems leading to the theft of highly confidential intellectual property.
Tool requirements

CSniffer runs on Microsoft Windows systems (Windows 2000 upwards) and attempts to sniff network data in promiscuous mode. It can use one of two methods to achieve this:
    * Using Windows' built-in raw sockets API (default).
    * Using the WinPcap packet driver.

This necessitates running with administrator privileges.
However, when using Windows raw sockets there is a workaround that allows a regular user to run the tool.

Apply the following registry setting and reboot:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters\
    [DWORD] "AllowUserRawAccess"

    Set the value to 1 to allow regular users to use raw sockets.
Being able to apply this registry setting itself requires administrator privileges. However, once rebooted you can use the tool in raw socket mode without requiring administrator privileges.

Utilizing a privilege escalation attack on a Windows system and applying the registry setting above could allow sniffing of all network traffic when running under a non-privileged account, something that is not generally known!
Limitations

Other than the aforementioned requirements of running under an administrator level account, there are some severe limitations when using the built-in Windows raw sockets mode.

The Microsoft raw sockets API has several restrictions that have been introduced over the years in an effort to reduce security risks associated with low level network packet access. Depending on what platform you are running on you may find that you are limited in what data can be seen on the network. A comprehensive list of all known limitations seen on different Windows operating systems and service pack levels of those operating systems has not been compiled, but here are some known issues. Again, this only applies to Windows raw sockets mode.
If you do not have the ability to use WinPcap your best bet is to use XP Sp2 or a server level OS such as Windows Server 2003.
