‘Moving’-A small six letter word but evokes a dozen different emotions, and all at once. It brings the excitement of going to a new place, the fun of meeting new people, it also has the curiosity of learning new things and somewhere it has the pain of leaving things behind. Things that you have known for long enough and some people who just don’t seem to get out of the head. It’s difficult to say for all but for a majority, we never grow big enough, mature enough not to miss mom. In fact in a new country, she’s the one who can help beat the blues and get along with the people. From the universal mom’s diary, following 5 lessons may be handy in settling at a new place.

Listen from your heart

Expectations of the boyfriend, attitude of co-workers, weather, money, the lady residing down the road, the black dog, crops this year and god knows what, we all have something to say about everything. Most of us want to be listened or more importantly to be understood. It doesn’t matter where you are coming from or where you are going, listen to what people have to say, show that you really want to know about it. If someone likes fishing, you do not have to be an expert to talk on the topic. Ask questions, let them do the talking.

Do not judge

Amongst all the lessons moms teach in the childhood, respecting others beliefs, religion and customs is usually somewhere at the top of the list. As an expat, you may find some of the things a little awkward, obviously they are a lot different from the place you are coming but be open to things. No one is telling you to agree or believe but you do not have to disagree or judge too.

Learn to say no

Just because you are in a new place, does not mean you have to try 24 × 7 to fit in. It is completely okay to be a little closed to experiences at times. The emotional pressure can really take a toll on body and brain, so take out some time and do things that provide YOU the happiness. Exercise, walk, meditate, eat or simply sit down.

Know what you feel

Being sad at times is not a bad thing. You may, or rather will, miss things back home, thinking about what the dog might be doing, how mother would have prepared the supper tonight. It would also fetch the usual emptiness but just like happiness, this is also another feeling, a feeling that is good to experience some times, remember that only some times.

Share with others

As much as you are curious about the new place, the new place is curious about you too. People want to listen about where you come from. They want to know what you like to eat, what’s famous in your town and what drinks are drunk back at your home. Share your experiences, your food and your jokes to strike a chord with them.

I certainly don’t know you and I don’t know whether you like me or not but the fact is that I have spent too much time looking around for people who would listen to me. Listen to me not because they think I am losing it, listen to me not because they owe me something or listen to me not because they think I need to let it out. I just want someone to listen just to know what I feel like inside.

You seem like the only guy who would listen to me without asking questions, without telling what should I do and how I can get over this. 79 have you ever been in love? Haha what a silly question. What would you love? Page number 78 or the printed lines or maybe you can fall in love with this ink. Let me suggest you something, don’t ever do that.

You know the best part of talking to you 79? You won’t even ask me why and you won’t tell my secrets to anyone too. Will you? You know 79; it has been over 7 years since I last saw her. You know those rains? The water coming from skies, have you ever seen that? Ya, I met her last time in rains. It was beautiful, not because it was raining but because of the fact that it was looking the way I was feeling. A little weepy, a little breezy, a little greeny and a lot cold. You know what she said? She said ‘Don’t measure the time we spent in years do it in seconds, we had our time but life doesn't stop’.

Wasn't that lame 79? Measure in seconds, I don’t know what seconds, crappy thing, crappy lines. Yeah, I know what you are thinking. What she said was pretty good, deep indeed. Buy what do I do? I have thought of a million reasons to hate her. Like maybe she had an affair with someone, maybe she wanted someone richer, maybe she wanted some better looking or maybe she was never serious.

But what do I do with those eyes 79? Those big black eyes, every time I try to hate her, the large vacuum, the emptiness, the nothingness of her eyes flash to me. Her eyes say that she wanted me to stay, they say it was real. Was it? I don’t know, maybe it was a dream that I am mistaking to be true. Can’t get it out of my head after the sleep.

You know my friends say that I should start dating someone. What do you think? Life moves on? It does? Why is it not happening then? Parents sent me to a psychiatrist this weekend. This is my conversation with my five-year old cousin sister. She really has a valid point here. It’s so valid that I considered renaming my blog to ‘The Typist’. I could have gone with philosophical answers like:

“It doesn’t matter when thoughts flow, you can use anything to give it a physical form. It can be a pen, charcoal, brush, spray and of course now-a-days my life KEYBOARD.”

But, I guess it’s best to let women win irrespective of their age. Well that’s what I wanted to write about from quite some time. Eating out a lot lately and had some chances to sit quietly and look around. At times, I really feel bad about the plunging levels of ‘mannerism’ when people are out with a girl. Of course, in any way, I can’t be called an expert or even an intermediate at this but I guess there has to be a basic list. So that thought inspired me to write down a ‘List of My Top 5 Tips when you are out with someone’ or maybe I need a cooler name, how about ‘Shortcut to be Elegantly Cool’? Okay I’ll get back to the name later. Here goes my list:

1. Hold It There

Getting out of the car/off the bike walking as swiftly as possible while your partner is lagging behind, taking phone out of pocket, checking messages and crashing into the place like a terrorist - Seems like a very usual sight?

Wouldn’t it be nice if you can hold the door for the lady? In no way I meant just a girlfriend, it can be your sister, mum, aunt, friend or virtually anyone. Is it too much of an effort to make?

How To: Next time you are out with a girl, walk with her. Yeah it might be a slow walk, but you can take out time except if you are two-timing and have another date to look after. Take a quick step near door and open it for her. A smile would be just perfect.

2. Not a Musical Chair

Unless, you are playing musical chair, there is really no need to rush on to the table before her. Although I am not a big fan of pull-her-a-chair rule, I make sure I do that. And no I am not talking about some big fancy restaurant; it can be McDonald’s, Subway or just simple a coffee place. I guess most guys love to follow this thing on the first date and then woossh, it’s gone. Okay it might be too much to ask but at least wait for her to sit.

How To: There are no hard and fast rules as such, just make sure that you don’t bang chair into her legs while slipping it back.

3. Luggage Dilemma

Now this is something that hurts me the most. I don’t know why it happens but I can’t see a girl or lady holding heavy bags and trying to place them on the trolley or carrying them on a railway platform. Can’t you just take her bag or at least help her out?

How To: Stop flexing your muscles and put them to some good use. Take bags from her or if there are too many, for god’s sake hire a coolie.

Precaution: Helping other people out is good too but make sure you don’t specifically go to pretty girls and keep getting slapped or to irritated elders who can get you in jail for theft attempt.

4. Time! Time! Time!

‘Where are you? I am waiting’

Ooouuch I won’t say why it’s bad to get late so let’s just get to the reasons. Okay men have problems with dates and times. We can’t remember appointments, dates, movie timings and the list goes on. It’s actually really REALLY rude to make a girl wait. Use technology mate. What’re schedulers for?

How To: As you are talking on meeting on a certain day, add the event in your phone and set at least 3 alarms. One would remind you in the morning and other 2? Just in case.

5. I’d like you to decide the number 5. So what do you think is an etiquette blunder when you are out with a girl? I’ll rather provide some other miscellaneous points to help.

Don’t consume excessive alcohol. Be in your senses, drink like a camel some other day.

Don’t be absolutely quite. Keep talking, say anything absolutely anything.

Don’t ignore her talking to other friends; you brought her so better pay some attention.

P.S. - I am absolutely not trying to judge anyone. Obviously, things depend on relationship between two people. I, too, misbehave quite intensely when out with some of my friends. Some of the things might sound like clichés; well it’s my list ;)

This is obviously something not written by me, but ya it’s something we all have experienced. Travel and you’ll surely know what family is, love is, your books, windows, bed, dog, terrace, rain, coffee mug……..I can go on. Henry Rollins has done it far more better.

I beg young people to travel. If you don’t have a passport, get one. Take a summer, get a backpack and go to Delhi, go to Saigon, go to Bangkok, go to Kenya. Have your mind blown. Eat interesting food. Dig some interesting people. Have an adventure. Be careful. Come back and you’re going to see your country differently, you’re going to see your president differently, no matter who it is. Music, culture, food, water. Your showers will become shorter. You’re going to get a sense of what globalization looks like. It’s not what Tom Friedman writes about; I’m sorry. You’re going to see that global climate change is very real. And that for some people, their day consists of walking 12 miles for four buckets of water. And so there are lessons that you can’t get out of a book that are waiting for you at the other end of that flight. A lot of people—Americans and Europeans—come back and go, Ohhhhh. And the light bulb goes on.

A lot of traveling and which means a lot of reading too. I made it a point to write about a lot of things in this time but ended up sitting idle looking at the ever-changing landscape and reading whatever I can get. I feel empty, there’s absolutely no urge to write so I’ll rather share two things from a book.

The first excerpt is a list by the character Javits; a list of what society thinks is normal and anything outside it, makes people uncomfortable and threatened.

What normality means in this world?

1) Anything that makes us forget our true identity and our dreams and makes us only work to produce and reproduce.

2) Making rules for a war.

3) Spending years at university and to find a job.

4) Working from nine in the morning to five in the afternoon at something that does not give us the least pleasure, so that we can retire after 30 years.

5) Retiring only to discover that we have no more energy to enjoy life, and then dying of boredom after a few years.

6) Making love, even when you don’t want to, just to show that you have it.

7) Trying to be financially successful instead of seeking happiness.

8) Ridiculing those who seek happiness instead of money by calling them “people with no ambition”.

9) Comparing objects like cars, houses and clothes, and defining life according to these comparisons instead of really trying to find out the true reason for being alive.

10) Not talking to strangers. Saying nasty things about our neighbors.

11) Thinking that parents are always right.

12) Getting married, having children and staying together even though the love has gone, claiming that it’s for the sake of the children (who do not seem to be listening to the constant arguments).

13) Criticizing everybody who tries to be different.

14) Waking up with a hysterical alarm-clock at the bedside.

15) Believing absolutely everything that is printed.

16) Wearing a piece of colored cloth wrapped around the neck for no apparent reason and known by the pompous name “tie”.

17) Never asking direct questions, even though the other person understands what you want to know.

18) Keeping a smile on your face when you really want to cry. And feeling sorry for those who show their own feelings.

19) Thinking that art is worth a fortune, or else that it is worth absolutely nothing.

20) Always despising what was easily gained, because the “necessary sacrifice” – and therefore also the required qualities – are missing.

21) Following fashion, even though it all looks ridiculous and uncomfortable.

22) Being convinced that all the famous people have tons of money saved up.

23) Investing a lot in exterior beauty and paying little attention to interior beauty.

28) As you grow older, thinking you are the wisest man in the world, even though not always do you have enough life experience to know what is wrong.

29) Going to a charity event and thinking that in this way you have collaborated enough to put an end to all the social inequalities in the world.

30) Eating three times a day, even if you’re not hungry.

31) Believing that the others are always better at everything: they are better-looking, more resourceful, richer and more intelligent. Since it’s very risky to venture beyond your own limits, it’s better to do nothing.

32) Using the car as a way to feel powerful and in control of the world.

33) Using foul language in traffic.

34) Thinking that everything your child does wrong is the fault of the company he or she is keeping.

I pick up a pen to write something and end up looking at the infinity on the wall. Words, so powerful that they can change the world, still can’t find a line that could describe how I feel. Yet again, I take my bag and travel to places that are out of my comfort zone. I don’t know what am I looking for but that makes me happy, I feel alive so I do it. My dreams are those colors that only I know about or maybe I don’t. Still will keep up the act of looking for something I have lost and maybe someday I’ll find it.

I bumped into people who are a part like me, a lot like me. They all have dreams, I just know it. Dreams are not always crazy, some want to see their children grow, maybe they want to have a daughter or maybe they just want to buy a house. But for now, they are quite happy with the dream of having that one day.

They say that the dumbest guy would the one who keeps doing the same thing and expects something new to happen. I have been dumb for quite long enough, now I want to do new things and expect something new to happen. I have also been hated for quite long enough for not being more like others. I do some random works that cannot be labeled stable in any sense, I love many people and still can’t hold that for eternity, I scar my body and my soul with inks and I accept that I have been stupid in love. Still I feel thrilled about all this, I don’t regret it and surely I am not going to do something to make judgmental people happy but again I want everyone to love me.

Right now, I am in love. I am in love with this feeling of being alone. I am in love with every person I have met. I am in love with that little girl looking outside window. I am just in love with my God. I am in love with love.

Will be away for some days now. Will upload some pictures on the blog coz there are some things that I can never explain. After all, I am a scribbler not a writer, I have my limitations.

Fate

‘Hypothetically, if the only choice you've got is to do the wrong thing, then it's not really the *wrong* thing, is it? It's more like fate.’

‘Vlad, it’s never that easy.’

‘Of course, we agree to disagree.’

No matter, what choices you make what things you do and what rewards you want, everything is written, decided and destined to happen. This is what I understand of fate. Although I don’t personally believe in it (or maybe I do sometimes), fate is really an important part of our lives. It affects how people think, see and perceive situations. I guess luck can be a factor, you are lucky sometimes but isn’t fate a totally absurd term? They say god has a book and he/she has written everything in advance (I have nothing against gods) or some polite ones will say that the journeys are not written only the destinations are. How philosophical is that?

Interestingly, almost all religions support that. The bad thing is that even Shakespeare has supported it with the best lines written in English literature.

“All the world's a stage,

And all the men and women merely players.

They have their exits and their entrances.”

If I am not wrong then it means that entries and exits are preordained and you have a specific role to play. A part chosen by GODS, DESTINY or whatever, so if I choose to do the wrong thing then it will not be actually the ‘wrong thing’. It is my fate. Okay, so now that the theory is crystal clear, let’s come to the practical part. Some certain bloody things, including love, longingness, jealousy, sympathy, anger, faith and others are always there to screw things up. No matter, how many times they tell us that it was all gods’ plan, the pain won’t just go. There’ll always be that emotion to do things that you want, to love people, to choose between right and wrong. Things would have been much easier if we knew what gods want. May be it helps to accept the fact that gods are looking over us and leaving things to them, maybe it’s the same feeling like having parents at home and maybe it gives strength to people but things can turn really nasty if this situation overturns and people start thinking that gods want us to lose.

There’ll always be people who believe in fate and people who don’t. However, if you do believe in fate and it seems like gods have written everything against you then there’s a line from a Gladiator.

Friend 1: Another argument with her?

GB: Yes another argument and I don’t know what, where and why. It was like a paper of mathematics on a day when I had prepared for chemistry. It was like I was writing the answers with a broken ballpoint tip. No matter, how hard I tried to make my point, all it created was mess. The more I emphasized on the point, the more blue spots were on my answer sheet.

Friend 1: So that’s it?

GB: Plus there was negative marking for untidiness which I will come to know in days to come.

Friend 1: Okay that explains the level of toughness.

GB: I think it does and now I am worried that I’ll have to apologize to the teacher with a concrete explanation.

A Part of Me

Einstein said that time is relative but I never quite understood the fact. No wonder, I have always been pathetic with numbers. Never understood time, algebra, money, costs, accounting and the list goes on. But traveling always seems some kind of time travel to me. Flashes of past keep hovering around. At times, things seem as they have never happened. May be that was a different life, a different time. Sometimes, I need to open my phone’s gallery to actually prove to my conscious brain about a certain event. However, traveling is something else. When I travel alone, looking aimlessly into the nothingness out of the window, I am usually thinking about many things together, get mixed emotions and start missing everyone I know. Is that a normal thing? I think I have left my parts at places and with people. And after losing that part, I have tried to rebuild myself. Obviously, the new me is never the same. Traveling, once again, proves that to me. It’s like a slideshow of life playing over and over again during those few hours. I guess that’s what relativity of time is. When it’s 4:30 to 6:30 for people, it has been a certain lifetime for me.

It’s funny that today the professor said ‘Remain silent and concentrate!’? She was sitting a couple of benches diagonally ahead of me but I feel I was listening to her heart beats loud and clear. Every time she smiled with those dimples, I felt that I was touching my guitar with a 700 watt amplifier. And I swear when she gets that expression (how do I write about it, wish I was a painter and can draw it all over the canvas but I am not. So I’ll just close my eyes and think of her) I almost heard waves coming to the shores at sunset. Gosh, can nobody hear that? Is my professor dumb? He says ‘concentrate’ and I was on the verge of a cardiac arrest if she had looked back with that smile. So I just covered my ears and closed my eyes hoping the guitars and the oceans would disappear.

He asks me every day ‘Do you love me’. What should I say? Should I say that I love you eternally? Or should I say that I love you unconditionally? He asks me every day ‘How much do you love me’. Should I say I that I am ready to leave every single thing I have known in my life for you? Or should I say that I have planned my days, my weeks, my months, and my years around you? I wish I could compare my love with the mountains and the snowfall, I wish I could reply with a poem or a line that’s new. I wish I could say that I am scared to lose you. I wish could say that I was born to be with you. But I choose to say ‘I do’ and smile, hoping that he can read just a part of it in my eyes.
