Joanna Coles: New Visible Icon

Lately, every time I see Joanna Coles, editor-in-chief of Marie Claire, I am drawn to what she is wearing. Coles portrays a strong, minimal, creative, chic look which I have been aspiring to for the past eighteen months. Most recently, she has been the “Tim-Gunn-figure” for Project Runway All Stars, and she always enters the work room communicating “I am in charge.” She is visible...but not screaming out "look at me."

What does it mean to have style icons? For me, it means that there are some women who consistently communicate the messages I desire to also communicate with my style. They are reliable and not all over the place. My FOUNDATIONAL FIVE GUIDELINES were developed for myself after studying other women whose choices I respect. If you compare my looks in the beginning of this blog up until now, you will see that I have toned the accessories way down. This is the influence of women like Ines de la Fressange and Coles.

Yet, since I love creativity, I try to keep a touch of it around….like Diane Keaton. Minimalism is so new to me, but I really think it fits where I am in life right now. The past, over-the-top-me was trying just a little too hard!! Right now, it means toning down the accessories just a bit and being happy when I wear mostly neutrals (sometimes there is no reason to add on extras). It also means careful attention to prints and color.

Has the Economy Killed Romance?

Four women sitting around a lunch table recently and in the middle of a conversation about what our adult children are up to, one said,
“I told my husband no flowers for Valentine’s Day or candy….I just want a gift card for shopping.”

“Me too,” said another, “Flowers die so quickly…I want something that lasts. I promise to think of him when I wear the purchases!”

I said, “Hmmm…does that kill the romance?”

“No! I will still light candles and lure him into the bedroom….I just want some shopping money…flowers are expensive, you know!” (Laughter followed)

They explained higher gas prices, higher grocery prices, higher insurance rates…well, let’s face it, higher everything had depleted their personal shopping money and now they want it back…for special occasions. But, one did say that the gift card should accompany a box of candy!! (Again, laughter)

Treasure hunting can be such a fun way to spend a little free time; however, be careful not to buy just to buy. You want to make sure it goes well with your current wardrobe and has great fit….but have fun!

After all this is our sport of hunting, and in Texas we will tell you that the thrill of the hunt is what fuels the seasons! Don’t get down if you do not find anything, just go back out there again soon. Remember, many women clean out their closets this

Thank goodness it is Friday…even though our weekend is forecast to be rainy and cold! We are actually beginning to see the end of our drought and that is very exciting. Current predictions have the amazing Texas wildflowers returning in a big way this spring…I can’t wait!

Here are a few bits and pieces I thought you might enjoy:

First off, Joy Sewing wrote an article for the San Antonio Express News about happy, confident dressing…something I try to discuss almost every day here. You can click on this link for the entire article which mentions these five points to challenge yourself:

"1. Wear Things that make you happy.

2. Add color, it’s a mood booster

3. Let go of negatives. Forget your stomach or man boobs. Focus on fit.

4. Dress like you’re happy even when you are not…it helps.

5. Be neat – always".

I would agree with all of these…however I am not always neat…but number four works! Choose to dress happy and act happy even if you do not feel it and things will feel better!! Sewing also interviewed Jennifer Baumgartner, author of You Are What You Wear: What Your Clothes Reveal About You (Da Capo Lifelong Books, $16).

Most of you know my fabulous friend, Gigi!! Today she is modeling a skirt and blouse from the W by Worth Spring 2012 Collection. I am so in love with these pieces…the colors…the fit…the strong, chic look! She is rocking it!

Not only is she stylish, but, Gigi is the ultimate atelier…..an art instructor par excellence! Gigi believes that EVERYONE can draw, and she will accept no excuses. It is amazing what she is able to do with her students. Rodeo week is a huge event for them, because every year she has students who will win thousands of dollars for their Western paintings. One of her past students funded her entire Bachelor’s Degree with one painting.

Gigi is one 50+ lady making a difference in the lives of others! She is a dear friend and the one who talked me into writing this blog!

Inspiration Looks: Mere Reflections

One could think the same of the inspiration looks so many fashion bloggers mimic….one is a beautiful reflection of the other …yet, unique in the eye of the beholder. I saved this inspiration look from Harper’s Bazaar when the Fall 2011 lines were previewed. Obviously, it took me a long time to interpret the look, but I finally got around to it. Believe me, I so wish I had her jacket!!!

Are Emotional Fashion Decisions Legit?

Do you hate a certain color or type of clothing because your mother forced you to wear it again and again when growing up? Do you have an aversion to plaid because of the private school uniform you were forced into for the first 13 years of your life?

Do you hate pencil skirts because you think slimmer ladies wear them better? Well, apparently our emotions are often tied to our fashion choices. Some professional stylists say simply, GET OVER IT! BE MATURE! LEAVE THE PAST IN THE PAST!! But, sometimes, it is not that simple.

I recently visited my mom in the hospital and with a large group of family gathered around her bed, she proceeded to tell everyone how much I loved the homemade clothes she sewed for me and how great I looked in them. She spoke with passion and flair of how I was the envy of so many girls in my small Texas town, because of the clothes. (Of course, this was after she told me she doesn’t like my hair color!!) All I could do was sit there silently and think about how much I loathed those clothes all the while processing bad memories of one day spent as a marshmallow and another really traumatizing Southern Belle moment. When I was finally able to buy my own clothes in actual stores, it was a great, great day!!

Another great day was when I was in route to a teenage cast party with a freshly sown party dress in tow. I lept from the car in a rush…slammed the door…caught the dress in the door…and chopped it in half. My mother was horrified…I was inwardly rejoicing. Unfortunately, she took it home and made it into a blouse!

Now, I completely understand that she made these clothes out of her love for me. I just was embarrassed to be seen in them when my high school peers were wearing cute, store-bought clothes. My mother was far from Project Runway material. I handled it the way I handle most challenges… I sought a solution and as a teen, I got a job at a boutique in the mall…and spent my income on their clothes.

Maybe we should all get over it…be mature…and leave the past in the past…but when someone tells me they have a hang up about a certain style or color…I kind of get it!!

One More Blast from the Past: As I said yesterday, this is rodeo week in San Antonio. I grew up going to rodeos all over the state and my favorite memories were the ones where I met all of the cast from Bonanza...one of my favorite TV shows! I met Ben and Hoss at the Fort Worth Rodeo and Adam and Little Joe at smaller ones. So, I dug out my precious autograph from Michael Landon to share with you....it is in my keepsake box...which does not hold any of my mother's homemade clothing!!

Rodeo's bring fond memories from my childhood!! Hmmm...maybe that is why I like western wear!!

Denim Shirts and Cowgirl Hats: Let's Rodeo!

Monday marks the beginning of the San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo, voted seven years in a row the top indoor large rodeo by the Professional Rodeo Cowboy Association. Also, over the years the Rodeo has provided over 113 million scholarships for local youth.

For the next two weeks, rodeo is an excuse for the most over-the-top-Western attire to be worn often! So, we pull out the denim shirts, cowboy hats, boots, turquoise, silver, leather, and feathers and enjoy all the cliché comments about Texans!! It really is a fun time and we are San Antonio proud whenever the rodeo rides into town. Over this past weekend, the trail riders arrived from their time fighting the elements and the San Antonio Spurs rode out for a lengthy road trip where all local eyes are not on them for this short amount of time.

It seemed appropriate for VISIBLE MONDAY to celebrate the Rodeo's visibility with a denim shirt and Western belt. For the most part, my Western wear is very understated. Though born and bred Texan, I have never felt comfortable in a Cowgirl hat…and I have tried often! But denim and jewelry…bring it on! Let’s Rodeo!

KOHLS Defense and Our Shopping State of Mind

Last week, I wrote a post about JC Penney’s new marketing approach. By the way, if anyone has gone by JCP since they slashed prices for good, please let us know your observations!!

But, that post brought some interesting comments and got me to thinking as to why some of us see retailers so differently. I believe it is a variety of factors which are influencing us as we walk into a store to shop:

1. How much time do we have to spend in the store?

2. How much money do we have to spend?

3. What are our personal-style likes and dislikes?

4. Our size…yes, it matters how we feel about where we shop! (One of the comments was KOHLS does not offer enough petite sizes and that is a legitimate concern for petite women)

5. What kind of mood are we in when entering the store…grumpy, happy, bad day, good day, etc.

6. Do we have any pre-conceived beliefs about the store...it would take a lot for me to change my memory of Sears growing up. I just do not see it as high fashion. But, Target turned it around beautifully....Jason Wu tomorrow!)

7. Have we had prior good or bad experiences at the store?

8. Quality and variety of merchandise!

One comment on the previous post about KOHLS said that the reader believes KOHLS embellishes every garment. This one baffled me, because some of my most minimal basic designs come from the KOHLS collections by Vera Wang, Dana Buchman, and Jennifer Lopez. All of these designers also have embellished pieces in their KOHLS collections, but like the tunic, I am modeling today, there are many selections which are basic and unadorned. Also, I have found the Lauren Conrad and Elle collections to be a bit more embellished. My Simply Vera long sleeved T shirts are just T Shirts in colors I like with great fit….nothing added. I do enjoy shopping there for many reasons…great offerings, easy access and affordability are at the top of that list.I had some pre-conceived negative ideas which grew in the last two years toward Macy’s, but I am willing to admit that Macy’s has made some positive marketing purchasing and promotion decisions that I like. I am happy to return there as a shopper once again. I also want to encourage the woman in the mirror (meaning me) and all of my readers to be aware of what might or might not influence our perceptions of a retailer and try to keep an open mind. But, we will all have our favorites and that is what makes the fashion world go round!!

There are several things I attempt to do every day which help me feel younger. The list includes:

1. Eat Healthy

2. Move around….and not sit as much

3. Stretch my wardrobe with creativity

4. Meet someone new

I will not pretend to say that I do all of these every day. But, I will tell you that I make a determined effort. Number two is honestly the hardest one right now. Between teaching and blogging and writing, I sit for long periods of time.

I believe seeking ways to meet new people daily is something else that will keep us vibrant and youthful. The easiest way is to meet someone through a blog or Twitter or Face Book. But, I also like to strike up a conversation in line at the grocery or while shopping. I have met some sweet, fascinating people at checkout counters. Since becoming a blogger, I have also met some incredible women in my community just telling their stories and featuring their businesses on the blog.

Number three is important because I do not have a lot of shopping income, so I have a wardrobe full of separates….which is obvious if you read this blog. You see the same bottoms…whether skirts or pants…over and over again. However, I really attempt never to repeat an outfit. There is so much you can do with a few great neutral pieces surrounded by creativity. It’s fun and it is economical.

February….hearts…flowers…love…lace…It all seems to go together! So, a celebration of lace is a great way to begin this month as Jill and Adrienne planned.

However, I have decided that there is a bit of arsenic in the lace decision for women 50+. Yesterday, I awoke fully intending to tackle the lace challenge with a beautiful lace cardigan I own. I have worn it before and each time it brings compliments. But, when I looked in the mirror, I thought, “Geez, I look like I’m old!!” I tried another lace tunic…same feeling….at that moment lace was making me feel elderly.

it for some reason!

It wasn’t until I put on the blue jacket, that I finally felt youthful in something with lace. This one had more design…better fit...more style...and personality.

What are your secrets for staying forever young? Clinton Kelly shared a few this week on his ABC Show, The Chew. "Being a nice person keeps you looking younger," Kelly said. "Negativity eats away at your insides." I completely agree with him here!

He also said that all women over 40 should wear styles which are 75% classic to 25% trend. "You need the little details to modernize classic style," he said. I would probably agree with that as well!!

Comfort Dressing and Visibility...on the Beach!

Road Trip!! Mr. B and I headed down to the Texas Gulf Coast on Sunday to visit family. I certainly realize that the upper Gulf Cost is not where you go for beautiful beaches, but it was nice to get out and see everyone.

It was also nice to have so many places to take pictures…I just could not decide which setting was the best…so you will just have to tell me if you prefer the bird watchtower, the umbrella, or the fishing pier! When I know I am going to be sitting in a car for six hours, I usually go for comfort…and I am so glad I brought my coat because it was very windy and cold on the beach. Wind was a real photo challenge...you should see the outtakes!

Women Making A Difference!

Meet Nina Rodriquez!! She is an amazing woman who runs a business around tribal African drumming!! That’s right…her Unlock the Rhythm workshops are held around the country for schools, businesses, and seminars. When I walked into the room last Friday night in a local elementary school, I was not sure what to expect. Each chair cradled a tiny African bongo….and Nina was surrounded by two very muscular men setting up their drums.

This was one of the most fun exercises I have witnessed. She was great with the kids and the whole experience was exhilarating. What made it even more touching was that the majority of the children in the audience are deaf. Nina is just one of the many incredible women in the world doing unique things with their gifting! It has been fun to go out and find them since my freelance writing ramped up a bit!

I hope we all are looking for ways to make a difference in this world!

Crossing over that line at 50, and realizing, at most, one half of your life may be over, can bring on a touch of rebelliousness!! For example, on Fridays at the school where we work, all faculty are asked to wear school spirit shirts and jeans. Gigi and I struggle with this one just a bit…we love the jeans part…it is just the spirit shirt where we really throw obedience out the window!! I do not want to spend Act II in a spirit polo…but I love the idea of a well styled casual look on Fridays! So far, no one has complained that we are dressing up a bit!

Now, I am just curious…but have you seen the new strategy from JC Penney’s…..the NO MORE SALES ever strategy.

Their ads feature over-taxed shoppers inundated with sales brochures and coupons, screaming….and conclude with the words ENOUGH IS ENOUGH….JCP.

I know they are attacking the ALL SALES-ALL THE TIME Strategy of Kohls. But I am not so sure that it will work…psychologically, I love getting a great deal at KOHLS during Power Hours with my combination of coupons from online-newspaper-text alert-see how low you can go strategy!! Also, I like what Kohls offers...such as the great Simply Vera (Wang) look from Gigi today!

JCP now says they will have low prices all of the time....40% off always. But, I am not sure they have quality merchandise that makes me want to experience the low prices. In recent months, I have seen the selection to be less than desirable. This doesn't motivate me to shop there...what about you?

The lovely Ariane has tagged me for quite a lengthy “get-to-know-the-blogger” event. It involves answering 11 questions posed to me by Ariane…. then confessing 11 random things about me…and finally asking my own 11 questions of 11 other bloggers. This all made me wonder…why 11? If anyone knows the answer, please share. So, hang in there why I go through all of the elevens!! First, the questions Ariane asked of me:

What do you think makes you unique? God created me to be unique…just as He created every individual to be. There is only one me. On the blogs, you do not find many suburban middle aged...high school teacher…mother of three…Texas through and through women…who have suddenly turned FASHION JOUNALIST!

What is your hidden talent? I have been blessed with the ability to speak well at the drop of a hat. I am not rattled if someone suddenly were to ask me to speak in front of 2000 people on the spur of the moment, unprepared.

If you had the choice, where would you live? Though I love seasons and the ambiance of northeastern cities, I think I would live right where I live. I am born and bred Texan. San Antonio is a multi-cultural city different from any other Texas city, and the majority of my own children are nearby.

The things you hate to do? CLEAN THE HOUSE. I am not a good housekeeper and I really hate it. My goal is to reach a place in life where I have housekeeping assistance...at 58, I am still waiting!

The worst injustice….This is hot button question. I am very passionate about many injustices happening around the world. I will mention particularly sex trafficking...racial and religious persecution..and then there are some I will keep in my heart, not ready to approach them here.

Fast fashion or vintage? Another tough question!! I love both. I guess I am more of a fast fashion girl.

Red wine or white wine? RED!

What causes me to lose my patience? With my students, I lose my patience with laziness and those who do not appreciate education. I lose my patience with those who do not want to read or work hard. I lose my patience with those who use Face Book and other social media as a weapon to destroy and bully…(if you are so spineless to not confront someone to their face, just say nothing at all.) I lose my patience with journalists who make assumptions and do not do their research or keep an open mind. Uh Oh…got a little carried away…I think this question caused me to lose my patience!!

Favorite male actor and why? Well, he’s dead. But I loved Michael Landon since childhood! Cary Grant is dead also...sigh!

High heels or low heels? Cute little ballet flats!! After bunion surgery, my days of daily high heels are officially over!!

Favorite subject in school? JOURNALISM! Fell for it in middle school, and majored in it in college…it is who I am!

ELEVEN RANDOM THINGS ABOUT ME:

1. I love to sing…mostly Broadway musicals!!

2. I said above that I loved Michael Landon…well… I met my husband when he was in a satire at church playing the role of Little Joe Cartwright on the Ponderosa as a prodigal son…..Cool, HuH?

3. My favorite foods are peanut butter and ice cream!

4. I love Bed & Breakfast-vintage stays over the super fancy hotels

5. A perfect afternoon: cloudy and cold; candles; Phantom of the Opera

6. I'm a little bit country and a little bit rock and roll!

8. I really miss our Yorkshire Terrier and would love to have another one some day!

My white shirt and black pants are provided by Foxcroft today and I want you to know that I am loving the fit and feel of these pieces. The shirt is a no-iron soft cotton with impeccable detail and seaming for a figure flattering fit. These are updated classic pieces which every woman needs in her wardrobe and can either be purchased online or in stores including Nordstrom, Von Maur, Lord & Taylor and some select Bloomingdales. The pants are now the most comfortable pants I own and I was so happy with the length…so often pants are too short for me and I have to go to a tailor and have the hem let out.

Now, for the amazing part….I finally completed a DIY project that worked….I am not the most artsy/craftsy person, but, believe me, the desire to be is there. I found a broken belt in my closet and just hated to throw it out because I loved the buckle…this round, turquoise piece. So, I took it off, and with my needle nose pliers, added it to this little black necklace which had been sitting in my jewelry for some time…not worn. You can see on the back of the buckle (below) how the belt looped through the piece…I had to superglue the little chain I placed there in order to hold it in the middle. VOILA! I love it! And I did it without help! I’ve come a long way, baby!

Now, please DIY crowd, don't make fun...can I hear some applause??

ACCESSORY CHALLENGE: SEND ME YOUR SMILE

Anyone who is a regular reader of this blog knows my wardrobe consists mainly of separates. I purposefully did this in order to have the ability to make more unique outfits and not always wear the same thing. I suppose if I had unlimited funds…I might possess more dresses. But, I love separates and how accessories can make you appear as though you shop daily!

Image consultant, Dominique-Vaughn-Russell, agrees that working with accessories is “the easiest and most cost effective way of updating or reinventing any outfit.” In her essay from the book Inspired Design, she poses an accessory challenge where two basic outfits are changed several times with accessories for different activities. In a nutshell...practice!!

Sometimes I will look back at the way I styled an outfit and either think VICTORY or DUD! Blogging has cemented in my mind the value of accessories, and how you can completely reinvent your wardrobe simply with an amazing
scarf or necklace!

Silk….beautiful, luxurious silk…is due to make a big come back for next fall. Last summer, I purchased this silk jacket at Goodwill for $3….I love the feel of it!! Unfortunately, because of our heat and humidity, I do not get to wear it for very long, but it is perfect for the transitional times.

Middle age is perhaps the ultimate of transitions. It is easy to spend this time living in the land of regrets. There are times I allow my thoughts to drift into...

I have some friends who literally carry a card in their wallets that says STOP on the front of it. Whenever, they begin to think negatively they are to pull out the STOP card and begin to think of what good is happening in their lives right at that moment. I do not carry a STOP card, but I have learned to recognize the signs. If I give “the regrets” a foothold, they will soon move in and stake a claim. For me, I mentally say STOP, take one day at a time, and focus on my blessings.

Hope everyone had a wonderful weekend!! Today’s outfit may be a bit toned down for VISIBLE MONDAY, but great classic pieces will always turn a head. I have been searching for a classic trench coat for a long time. Now, I know it is easy to find quality trench coats, but the stickler has always been price. Until, last week…with my last portion of Christmas money I found this London Fog trench on a 50% off rack at Stein Mart. Score! Though it is a shorter version, it's perfect for our weather in South Texas. If I was in a wetter climate, I might have held out for the longer length.

I wasn’t sure about the belt, because I really did not like it belted, so I turned to Ines for suggestions. In Parisian Chic, she writes:

“Never, ever buckle the belt properly like a good little girl. Tie it in front or behind with the buckle hanging loose. Unobtrusive fashion statements like this (Life’s too short, or the buckle’s broken but I love this coat so much I found a solution…) are very, very Parisian.”

Classic pieces such as the trench coat, pencil skirts, a great white collared shirt, and pearls are very visual and can always be counted on for perfect style!! I have seen many colored trench coats which were affordable, but I have literally waited for three years to find this one. So happy!

Writing Tutor

Happy Saturday, Everyone!

After my recent posts on how journalism principles can help with blogging, I was asked for Writing Tips. I shared a couple of my favorite tips:

1. Everyone has a story

2. Remember to use powerful, descriptive words….the writer should tell the story so well that the reader feels as though they were on the scene.

However, what if you could receive writing help from experts at the New York Times, Sports Illustrated, People Magazine, The Washington Post…just to name a few?? I am thrilled to discover The Writing Faculty. These writing tutors compose an impressive online faculty ready to assist anyone from primary schools to professional writers. For example, the journalism courses have three main goals:

1. To build the student’s core writing skills

2. To increase the student’s exposure to the theory and practice of journalism

3. To develop multiple finished articles that can strengthen the student’s writing portfolio and be submitted for publication.

Please remember what many of you are aspiring to is fashion JOURNALISM. But, good writing techniques are the same whether you are writing about fashion or politics. Writing is a developed skill. It is hard for me to give you advice and not be able to properly instruct you as I do my students in school, but here is a way you can have a writing tutor right in your own home!

Winter Fashion….For Me, Time Is Running Out!

I am well aware that time is running out for us here in South Texas to enjoy our winter clothes. In fact, the forecast for Saturday is into the lower 80s!! I have written before of my love affair with fall and winter clothing. I think it's mostly due to the fact that we have warm weather for so long where I live and, after all, variety is the spice of life! I get bored with the warm weather dressing! By September...it has become old, old, old.

We know that things will warm up in January and also during our rodeo in February, we will experience one or two really cold days! That’s about it! Therefore, you will most likely see me look for ways to enjoy my boots, tights, sweaters and wool jackets as much as possible on the blog before the opportunities fade until next October. Today, I realized that I had not yet worn this wool scarf…so I fashioned an outfit around it. The scarf is just too warm for spring and summer.

I’ve already told you that I like the new ABC TV show The Revolution Tim Gunn’s segment of this show is called the Timtervention…where he swoops in and encourages women to look and feel their best. During their premiere, Tim said that many women get into a style rut by focusing on their negatives….

My hips are huge!...

you get my drift.

He encouraged women to get a fresh start with style by accentuating their positives…focus on the strengths!! I began to do this a few years back when I went through my reinvention! First, I decided, I like my eyes! So, I experimented with makeup and learned that various shades of purple make my eyes POP!

Then, I decided that an open neckline was flattering and in some ways slimming! I know that I am a scarf addict, but I really look my best with a V neck or open neck such as the one I am wearing today. Gigi has great legs, so I pictured them here in the cutest polka dot sheer tights.
