Macbook Air (Oct 2010) Geekbench Scoring, Speed Tests & General Thoughts

General thoughts:

Been using this machine for the past few hours. As it happens, i've got my feet up on the couch and got this on the lap. Its surprising how light this machine is. Seriously. I couldn't do the same with my 15" Macbook Pro. Nor could I be typing this on the iPad as im not a big fan of typing an essay on the iPad. The screen is absolutely gorgeous, better than the MBP. The black border is.... wait for it..... making zero difference to me, despite the uproar amongst some users.

This happens to be my first SSD based drive and im surprised how zippy it is. Really making me think I should get one for the MBP (that or either keeping this MBA for myself lol).

2 gripes I have so far, and I knew this would be the case before buying:
1) RAM is not upgradeable
2) No backlit keyboard

I'd happily pay Apple to make the MBA slightly thicker and have both of the above in. I can kind of see it from a business POV that this type of machine is not a type of product you want to be using modding etc (this is where the MB and MBP step in). But then again, backlit keyboards are crucial for travellers IMO. Anything which is going to make the experience better is good. Imagine typing on the plane (night flight) and having to switch on the overhead light. Its just an added stress. *annoyed*. Would have bought an MBA for myself if they had this backlit keyboard, no doubt.

Apple in China

I'll no doubt be doing a video on this topic when I get back to the UK (seen as YouTube has been blocked here). In the meantime, i'll give you a rundown of some of things (the old fashioned way) which i've seen (in relation to Apple) in the past few days here in China.

Before coming to China, I thought Apple would be well known here and that a lot of people would be using Apple machines here in China. One may question why I think this way. Its simple. Apple machines and accessories are all made in Shanghai (China) - about a two hour drive away from here in 'Ningbo' (or 27 minutes by air). I have been to three computer markets (whom house between 400 vendors) - I have only seen two Apple resellers. And the prices aren't cheap. The iPod Shuffles are cheaper by possibly £4-£6 but the actual computers are much more expensive. Lenovo, Thinkpad and HP are BIG here in this part of China. They're well marketed around the city. Its guaranteed that you will spot at least 4-5 people, carrying a new laptop box when walking around for 5 minutes. I've also noticed that these two resellers carry local branded iPhone cases and accessories (not Incase, Rebel Scholar etc). If you were to visit an Apple Retail store in the UK or a resellers (PCWorld), you would see big and well known brands such as Incase, Mophie etc. In China, they depend heavily on the local market.

I would have loved to see genuine Apple accessories and parts at a reduced rate, I would have no doubt purchased a few things to make the most of the exchange rates.

I've also seen other cool Apple accessories (not genuine, local made) but are very cool to have and are cheap as chips. For example, I picked up an 'Apple' webcam for around £4. Its a decent quality webcam. I also have put in an order for an Apple hard drive. Thats correct. An Apple hard drive. The packaging is VERY SIMILAR to Apple. It even has the 'made in cupertino' sticker and serial number on it lol. I wish I could upload a picture to show you guys but the law is such that I can't. I ofcourse will do the unboxings etc as soon as I get back.

I've yet to spot someone with a Macbook or an Apple machine, whereas every other person has an iPhone. The iPhone is huge in China, its expensive but I presume thats because its unlocked. I've spoken to many local businesses whom are proud iPhone owners and they state that they got their iPhones months ago (before the official launch in China a few months back). They state its best to get it unlocked (from Hong Kong) as they can choose their own carrier (i.e. not locked to AT&T).

Cloud OS

As I write this blog, I am sitting somewhere above 35,000 feet in the air and it got me thinking about the whole ‘cloud’ technology - something which Google plan to roll out as their answer to OSx and Windows.

I would consider Emirates to be quite a premium’ish airline. I am currently traveling on the Glasgow - Dubai sector (approx 7 hour journey). I’ve flown with Emirates for years, ever since I was a kid. It seems like their ‘entertainment’ is lacking big style. Yes, its a given that they possibly have an edge over other ‘premium airlines’ in terms of service and ‘entertainment’ but throughout the last ten years - I can’t think of a single thing which they’ve done to make the travel experience more smooth. Yes, added a few more movies and radio options but nothing significant.

Narrowing the above down, what angers me is the fact that there is no WiFi on this aircraft nor any Emirates aircraft i’ve been on - and i’ve flown on many long distance routes. Yes, they have their own internet service built into the tiny screen on the back of each seat - however, i’ve NEVER seen anyone use the service. This is possibly down to two reasons; a) pricing and b) poor UI.

For me sitting in this aircraft, I have wasted almost 7 hours of work - I could be so much more productive if only they offered a WiFi service - which I would not hesitate in paying for. Furthermore, I have got an additional 7 hours to fly once I reach Dubai (Dubai - Shanghai sector). Back in 2003, Emirates was proud that it was the first airline to offer the use of mobile phones in aircrafts. Why could they not do the same with internet usage? One could argue that such technologies could take a lot of money to implement - which is true from a short term view, the bigger picture is what the guys in Emirates HQ are missing out on. If i’m not mistaken, Virgin offer an internet WiFi service in the ‘cloud’ or 40,000 feet in the air so I simply can not see why its not already implemented here by the Sheikhs.

Getting back to the ‘cloud OS’, it is for the above reasons why I know that cloud will simply not work until the internet options get more mainstream. I’ve said all along that Google Chrome OS may be good for a secondary OS but definetly not a primary. If your thinking of going all out on Google Chrome - your going to regret doing so. For me, until I can use WiFi in a public toliet (literally) - I won’t be recommending it to anyone.

72+ Hours with Windows 7

Having been playing around with Windows 7 for over the past three days, I am impressed by what I see. It's a step in the right direction for Microsoft.

I've not had the luxury of experiencing the 'Black Screen of Death' (yet) and I have found the experience quite easy to adapt to. The boot up process has been quite speedy. I am using Windows 7 on my Mid 2009 Macbook Pro and using VMWare Fusion 3 to run Windows.

The UI looks very similar to Vista, I think most of the work has just been tweaks to Vista and a few enhancements here and there i.e. dock

All in all, would HIGHLY recommend it to XP users.

I believe in the notion that NOTHING is 100%. Mistakes happen. Acer, Dell, Compaq and pretty much EVERY company AND industry have their own problems. From hotels to car manufacturers, premium and non-premium - mistakes happen.

One should not get angry as to WHY it happened but rather focus on WHAT is being done about it i.e. replacement, credit note, partial refund etc. Mistakes happen and organisations should be willing to resolve the issues promptly and effectively.

p.s. my Core i5 iMac works flawlessly :D

BackPack by TwelveSouth

So, my iMac 27" finally arrived and I finally got the chance to unwrap the BackPack (which was sent to me courtesy of TwelveSouth). Upon opening the BackPack, it seemed very familiar - of course, I am referring to the 'Apple like' packaging. Indeed, their product looks very premium'ish even before actually getting to physically see/touch it.

The instructions provided with the BackPack are VERY simple - easy to follow diagrams and detailed written steps. The BackPack is universal in that it works with older generation iMacs as well - so most of the additional 'accessories' you get with the BackPack your never even going to use simply because you will have one fit for your iMac.

The upside, or the purpose, of the BackPack is to clear the clutter from the desk and it does exactly that. I've never seen anything like it which makes it unique. Now, if you don't have many accessories to start with - this probably will be useless to you. However, in an era where more of us are spending more on technology than anything else - it will be useful for most (if not all!). My work area is a mess most of the time, but this BackPack will surely change that pretty soon.

Dell Customer Service

So, a close friend of mines called earlier from work and asked me to call up Dell and enquire up about an order he'd placed. I accepted and thought it would take a few minutes - so wrong!

Dear Sir/Madam,

I am writing in regards to my recent experiences with dealing with your firm. I must say, I now know exactly why Michael Dell is losing money with running this ‘lunatic of a firm’.

I placed an order for two netbooks a few weeks ago and upon not hearing a SINGLE word about where my order was - I decided to call your so called ‘customer service’ team. Little did I know that this would be a ‘scenario’ or a ‘mission’ in itself. I spoke to about 30 different people, transferred from department to department, one side of the planet to the other and yet no one could answer a simple query - “where the bloody hell is my order”.

More concerning is the fact that I wasn’t aware your company does not have a ‘customer relations’ department - or so thats what I was told by your ‘customer service’ agent who started to laugh (presumably having a laugh with his colleagues) and then cut me off. It’s no rocket science why people are buying less and less from Dell, and trust me - this is my last order with Dell. Last I checked on your financial situation - not doing too well in comparison to competitors. No surprise there.

I am terribly disgusted by your service - and your customer services team. I can not believe I have wasted a whole day being transferred from, lets be realistic here - ‘moron’ to ‘moron’.

This is absolutely pathetic that i’m even writing this letter considering i’ve never been this furious before. Absolute and utter nonsense. If I was given the option to run this firm, I would never take this job knowing how customers are dealt with and the amount of loyal customers who have already left, upon receiving 'excellent customer care' - end of sarcasm.

iMac or MB/MBP ?

I get a lot of questions on which system one should opt for when purchasing a Mac. Yes, its a very complex decision (I still remember when I was getting my first machine in late October 2008 - I admit, I was constantly trying to satisfy myself and then changing my mind lol).

I am not going to waste much time - here's the answer to the most FAQ in my PM box.

My recommendation would be for you to get a Macbook over the iMac. Here's why:

1) Macbooks are the 'best selling' range of Apple Computers. This essentially means that consumers of Apple systems PREFER the portability factor. This also means that when you sell it a few years or months down the line - there will be greater interest from people, hence, a better value over a desktop machine.

2) You can always get an external monitor and hook your MBP up to it - which is even better than a desktop as it gives you the option of dual display.

3) Portability - you have freedom to do what you want. Lie down in bed and use it, take it to different rooms, different locations... all without any hassle.

4) In the event your machine stops working or you need to get work done on it at the Apple Store - the Macbook/MBP will be easier for you to carry easily and safely in-store. The last thing you want to be doing is carrying a huge box with a computer on it - and if your using public transport, its even worse.

So in essence, your going to have a lot more flexibility with the Macbook or Macbook Pro route.
