The Right Choice

It's not every day we get the chance of a do-over. It's not every day we can recognize the opportunity to shine brighter than our present circumstance. But it is every day that we are led down a path to a place that we must choose a direction--one that will lead to life, and other that will ultimately hurt. Joshua, as he prepared to lead the Israelites into their promised land, challenged the people to make such a choice. ". . . choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the River, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you dwell."

Their choice was not going to alter his own. "But as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD." (Joshua 24: 15 NKJV)

Whether those who don't follow your path are family, friends, or acquaintances, you will be required to choose, as will they. You cannot be influenced by their decision, and neither should they demand you follow their lead. Each one of us will one day go before our Lord and be held accountable for whether we chose rightly.

Semony Pt. 1

It's been a long time since sharing on a Fiction Friday. I'm so excited to be hosting this week. After reading, leave a comment and a link to your site where we can come enjoy the fiction you've chosen to share.

A few years ago, I had the pleasure of meeting and working with a group of Indian (Hindu) women in a small preschool. While they were educating their children, I found there was a lot I had to learn as well and I grew to really love these women and children. I'm a little nervous about sharing this one. I may have gotten facts crossed with others. Just know, it is my hope to honor these people as I write this because they're close to God's heart as much as any one of us are.

SEMONY

Children crowded through the door as though each believed someone would decide there was plenty on the plane and slam the door on the rest. A dimpled fist wrapped around Semony Dilhon’s wrist. Turning to shoo the person attached to the wrist off, she found herself staring into a soggy face half her height. Curls plastered against the girl’s face, green goo stretched from her nose to her chin. Eeewww…Semony clenched her fist. The desire to jerk her arm away from the snotty mess next to her grew with each sniffle and dripping tear. Instead, rolling her eyes, she moved forward as the others pushed in behind her.

Why don’t they say something? She glared at the grownups with clipboards.

“Semony Dil-Dil hon?” the woman, called Miss M.—because her name was long and difficult—barely looked up.

Semony chewed her tongue. Couldn’t anyone pronounce her name right?

Apparently she was expecting something. “Semony.” She glanced around, before locking eyes with Semony. “Ah, I remember.”

She waved Semony ahead and another, older child, showed her to her room. A quick look around confirmed Semony’s fear: no safe place to hide. A bunk and a twin bed hugged the walls opposite each other. If she’d had a choice, she would have stayed home. At least there she knew what to expect. Here, little slimy people followed her as though she were their savior.

Well, I’m not.

She deposited her bag onto the bottom bunk, heaved a sigh, and sank to the mattress. This wasn’t going to be anything that her rescuers had promised. Death would be better. To follow her family into the grave, security and comfort awaited her. But death denied her entrance. Even in starvation, she begged for death but somehow she wasn’t found worthy. Maybe her parents’ god wasn’t as caring as they’d told her. It could be they were deceived as the soldiers accused.

That must be what happened. Their god didn’t see, and the Hindu gods couldn’t help them because they turned their backs on them.

Semony vowed in that moment. Never make the gods angry. If she must live, she would please them; make them know she has good karma.

Footsteps tip-tapped toward the door. A quick scan of the room revealed no place to go. Another in the room would insist she meet their gaze. But if she wasn’t seen…

She scrambled from the bed, slid under the bunk and pressed her body against the wall. Four feet approached. One whimpering, another consoling, Semony guessed who was in her room. Slimy-green-goo-nose-girl.

“Semony.”

It was the woman who hacked her name.

“Semony, where are you dear?”

I am no deer.

The woman turned, sinking onto Semony’s bed. Slimy-green-goo-nose-girl joined the lady. “Semony, are you hiding in here? Come on out and meet your roommate.”

Pressing harder against the wall, Semony wished she could disappear. Her face burned. She wouldn’t allow anyone to see her weak. Her breath came in shallow whispers. If the gods loved her, Miss M. would leave her alone. If the gods loved her, slimy-green-goo-nose-girl would stay away from her.

“Listen, Amelia.” Miss M. stood. “I’m going to see if I can find Semony. You stay here. Everything will be all right.”

“Y-ye-es Ma’am.” Sniff.

No. Don’t stay. You can’t stay. This isn’t right. Semony knew, they weren’t supposed to be together. The girl—Amelia?—was obviously notHindu. She couldn’t possibly be Semony’s roommate. It would make the gods unhappy. Wouldn’t it?

Or—maybe—if she was kind to the infidel girl, the gods would look on her with kindness. No. Only those born Hindu were chosen, special, to serve the gods. Those not chosen to be Hindu must have made the gods unhappy.

Semony may only be thirteen but she felt, and others said, that she had a mature grasp of their faith. No one could convert into or out of Hinduism. They’re chosen. Their fates are sealed. To try and deny this truth is to question the gods. And no one questions them. Turning their backs on the gods is what brought trouble on her parents. Semony had to remind herself of this. Her parents tried to leave, to make alliance with the Christian God. This is why they are dead. She would remain faithful.

Clamping her eyes shut, she prayed. Please, help me be faithful to you. Help me to please you. I do not want the same fate as theirs.

The moments ticked by. Semony listened; the room remained silent then a sniff followed by ragged breaths. She rolled her eyes. She’s still crying? Ugh.

Would it hurt so bad to offer a sleeve, or a shoulder? She didn’t have to follow their god. Wasn’t it part of their Hindu faith, to be kind to others? Weren’t they a peaceful people?

Before she could move, Miss M. returned. “I can’t find her anywhere. Come with me. You can stay with me until supper.”

“S-supper? I’m hungry.”

“Soon, my dear.” Her voice was kind, although Semony hesitated to trust. She was, after all, a grownup, a Christian, and one like those who led her parents away from their gods. Yes. Be careful with that one. Pulling back the hand she’d extended when she considered leaving her hiding place, she waited for the two to leave.

Their voices faded, the door clicked. The room, once again, was silent. She was alone again. Maybe she could stay here until they reach their destination. What about being nice to the girl? She screwed up her nose. Slimy-green-goo-nose-girl … gonna be stuck with her until the end of this trip. Maybe I’ll stay here.

She rolled her eyes. How her mind shifted faster than a see-saw she couldn’t understand. Her father laughed at her indecisiveness. Her mother shook her head. “Make up your mind, child. You’re making us dizzy.” Laughter in their home had been a normal thing—something she could count on. No more. She must make up her mind and hold herself true to it.

The day grew long and the room darkened. “Lights out.” Miss M.’s feet lifted from the floor. Semony’s heart groaned. She’d hoped to climb upon her bed. To do so now would reveal her secret. She would never be safe again. Her stomach grumbled, tattling on her resistance to supper time. How could she come out then? It would have been as dangerous as now. She pressed her hands into her stomach, hoping to squelch the angry tones threatening to expose her.

Music filled the room, a soft cello caressing her ears until her eyelids drooped. Just five minutes, and I will feel better.

Total Dependence

It's been a while since we've last spoken. I'm sorry. Like many, if not all, of us the best laid plans have a tendency to get derailed by life's incredible ability to intervene. How often do we look and say, "How did we get here? Why is this happening?"

I'm learning that God has a bigger story, a more profound plot, with greater impact capabilities than we can fathom. His ways are higher than ours.

I've been aware that a new season was about to unfold in my life. I've asked God if it couldn't be a season of rest. Them my heart began to stir. I wanted to feel that I was making a difference. That I was a blessing rather than needing to be blessed.

Surprise. The vehicle --life-- has dropped me off in the world of home care. It's quiet. Restful. Peaceful. And I am in a place once again of being totally dependent on God for my every move. I'm out of my element here. In another's home. Praying I can be a blessing to the entire family --not only the woman I have the honor of caring for.

Why tell you this?

Because detours are not our plan but can be -- and very well might be-- God showing up with a better plan.

Inseparable Bond

I met His gaze from across the room … briefly.

I looked away in shame.

How long had it been since we talked?

Hadn’t I promised to call?

To lean on Him for guidance and strength?

Instead, every assertion of love and all my proclamations of dependence, each promise of faithfulness to Him and His word evaporated with the first trial … a day later …

Or was it a minute?

I fought to choke back the sob that pushed up my throat, demanding a voice.

I beat down the rush of emotion that flooded my burning heart.

I knew I’d failed. I’d forgotten … again.

How could He trust me with anything I say to Him if I can’t last a minute?

The only thing left to do was to turn and leave, head bowed low. I will never be able to create within the steadfast determination and grit needed to go the distance with Him.

BUT

Before I could take one step …

His hand was on my arm, staying my departure, while His other tucked a finger beneath my chin. He

turned my face towards Him.

The radiance in His eyes enveloped me in warmth. A blanket wrapping tight to drive away the chill of defeat.

Then I heard His voice reverberating within my soul.

Nothing.

Not death . . . nor life.

No angel . . . or demon.

Nothing today . . . tomorrow . . . or even yesterday.

There is no depth . . . or height,

Or anything in all of creation

That can separate you from My love.*

Hero #3: NAOMI

It's not in the great and powerful that peace is won, but in the simple, seeming small, unnoticeable, everyday acts of kindness that hearts are softened and battles are conquered.

If a hug could heal the worst disease, I'd elect Naomi to administer them to everyone. I'd like to share why ...

I was invisible. It was something I’d become very familiar with so didn’t expect anything else.

I’d also been accustomed to having financial issues.

But never have I been caught. Exposed by the reality of our deteriorating situation.

At least not until that weekend. Our annual writers’ conference. It was held in my hometown, so I had taken it upon myself to act as chauffeur and hostess to the many guests who would be landing at Detroit Metro Airport. For two days, I ran shuttles. For two days, I put myself in the space of others who I’d never met face-to-face. I told myself I was stretching my comfort zone. Making myself stay out of the corner where I could watch the others and accept my place—on the fringe.

And then it happened.

Before I had the chance to pay for my room, I learned that I would be overdrawn if I did give my roommate the half promised to her. She was gracious and allowed me to send her the money later.

And if it would have ended there, everything would have been fine.

But it wasn’t.

One disaster after another—personally—and I was a wreck by the end of the first night.

Thank God I was invisible. No one would know I was in the middle of a meltdown. No one would have to feel obligated to comfort a complete stranger. I could simply melt into the walls and wait out the storm. Right?

Not if she had anything to say about it. Naomi and I hadn’t spent much time talking. She was busy. A worker. Sitting across the room from her, I could see the joy rise from her spirit. And her stride spoke of a confidence in life that I hadn’t seen much. I didn’t know much about her.

And when I saw her coming towards me in the corridor, I felt certain I could slip past her—unseen.

She smiled.

My mouth wobbled into what I hoped resembled a smile.

She asked how I was.

“Fine.” I looked away, not wanting to betray myself and sidestepped around her and tuck into a doorway at the end of the next hall.

“You are not.” She stepped with me and I found myself draped in her embrace. I didn’t want to do it, but couldn’t stop the tears. My body gave into the grievous sobs that I was sure no one would notice. I simply knew no one would know whether I’d left the room, let alone the red blotches on my cheeks.

But Naomi notice. She didn’t look through me that night as I’ve known from countless others.

Naomi doesn’t know it, but she was the doorkeeper—greeter if you will—to a weekend when God would begin to show me that I’m not invisible. Never was. Not to Him.

Heroine: Annie

It was time for prayer requests. Annie raised her hand. When the teacher acknowledged her, Annie placed a hand on the calf of her right leg. “There’s a lump. I’ll be going in for a biopsy. Please pray it’s benign.”

I was about twelve at the time—Annie, 13. For me, it was just a lump. What did benign mean? Malignant? I’d never heard the terms. I’d never known a monster like cancer existed.

We later learned it was malignant and she’d be having surgery. A simple procedure to remove a lump about the size of a quarter.

But she was back in the hospital to remove another lump, and then another.

Apparently, hers was the type of tumor that spread when it came into contact with air.

I had the opportunity to visit Annie one day with leaders of our youth group. We traveled to the hospital and up to her room where we found her sister painting Annie’s toenails.

She was determined. “The doctors and nurses will see how pretty my toes are and know there’s nothing wrong.”

Her leg, to her knee, had to be amputated. Later we learned they had to take the leg to her hip.

As time progressed, so did the cancer. She was taken to another state where specialists might be able to help.

Next thing we heard, they were taking chunks from her back. This cancer was bit by bit chomping away at Annie, leaving little but her effervescent love for God.

At a youth event a couple years after her first biopsy, we put a call into her across the country from church. Hearing her voice, so upbeat and encouraging, stunned me. I’d have thought her to be afraid and angry. But instead, she worried about us. She told us she wasn’t scared. She believed God had it under control, and we could be comforted to know that she knew she was in good hands.

It wasn’t too much longer before we got the news. She’d left us for her home in heaven. She was ready. She wanted to go. She was unafraid and promised we’d see her again … when we have our turn to enter our eternal home and be with Jesus.

I’ll never forget her positive outlook. Her determination and grace. She was a year older than I, and she fought a battle I struggled with not long ago when my pastor faced it.

Thinking about this teenage girl who stared down a vicious murderer, and won by not allowing it to steal her joy, makes me think about the words of Paul, when he called his trials (and mine) light afflictions.

Heroine: Miss Janie

Today, I'm starting a series of short snippets, spotlighting someone who's crossed paths with me. As Paul says several times: "I thank God ... for you." I do. When I think of these, who I will call heroes of my faith, I thank God for sending them into my life, for however long or brief a time.

I hope you enjoy meeting these heroes. Many of them have no idea how their actions have impacted me. But then, neither do we see how our lives touch another. It's not in the great things, but the simple, everyday, ordinary behavior that engraves the passion of our hearts into another.

Miss Janie

I was five, maybe close to six, and she was the most beautiful woman I’d ever known—besides my mom, of course. Every Sunday, I wanted the family to rush us to church so I could sit in Miss Janie’s class. I wanted to hear her speak. Wanted to sit close to her, feel the warmth of her embrace.

One Sunday, she held our attention as she explained that a girl in our class had the mumps. “Make your cheeks really big, like this.” She blew out her cheeks, making her face look round. Each of us followed her example and held our pose while she began to talk to us. “Now, try to talk without letting the air out of your cheeks.”

We tried, but keeping our faces blown out like that was impossible when we opened our mouths.

Miss Janie continued to explain how difficult it was for our young friend to talk, to eat, or swallow because everything was swollen from this disease. From that day on, I found myself trying to imagine what it would be like to walk in another’s shoes. More on this in another post.

I will always be grateful for this Sunday school teacher who took the time to help a room full of five year old children to learn and extend compassion and empathy for another.

Breakthrough for Who?

We’ve prayed for breakthrough. Believed for it. Stood on the Scriptures that tell us to ask, believing, and anything is possible with God.

So, what are we missing? Why haven’t we seen the promised breakthrough? Has God not said that He rewards those who diligently seek Him?

Maybe He’s withholding, waiting for us to learn some lesson we’ve not gotten the text book to.

OR, perhaps the thing we’re missing is a little perspective. After all, didn’t He also say that His ways are higher than ours, His thoughts are not ours?

If this is true, then it could be that the breakthrough has been His.

Have you ever been through boot camp? I haven’t, but have heard stories. It’s tough. Rigorous. Painful. Confrontational.

But oh, so necessary.

Throughout the struggles I’ve faced over the years, there has been little doubt whether God’s been with me. This doesn’t mean doubt has remained silent. No. In fact, it has mixed its words with the reality of situations in order to cause the waves around me to threaten certain death—or at least destruction.

Those subtle lies usually sound a lot like, “This is the way it’ll be for you. Accept it.” Or “You’ll always be on the outside looking in, wishing you could join the fun.” Or “Last picked—again—should you expect anything different?” Or a myriad more thoughts that have been nurtured through the voices of unsuspecting agents.

Other lies include fears, paradigms, habits, and sometimes coveted relationships. Those are things that stand between me and a vibrant intimate relationship with the One who has called me by name before the foundation of the universe was laid. They are walls of separation that God has set out to break through. If Christ intercedes on our behalf, perhaps these are His prayer focus.

Looking back over the years, I can see where attitudes have changed. Beliefs have shifted. Trust has grown. Insecurities have diminished. Hindsight, as we know, has the potential to make things crisp and clear.

The physical circumstances have changed little. To the naked eye, it might be said it’s worsened. I have no idea when these particular trials will end. I do believe they will, though. One day, when the time is right and the harvest is ready.

What I do believe is that boot camp doesn’t graduate flabby, weak-hearted, irresponsible, insecure, unsure, second-guessing, knee-knocking, fearful candidates for the rigors of life. It is important to submit to the training and grow through it. See it as something that will one day create a formidable foe to the enemy of our soul.

And know this: God isn’t cracking the whip, demanding, beating our backs, diminishing our worth, or mocking our efforts. It is Him at our side, in front of us, at the finish line, beckoning, “Come. Another step. You can do it. I know you can. I’m with you. I’m for you. I’m your rest. Your strength. Your comfort. Your hope.”

He knows what you’re capable of. He created—fashioned and designed—you. Each detail of your being, He carefully placed and meticulously planned for greater purposes than you’ll ever imagine. He’s not about to crush that. He’s calling it out. Strengthening it. Completing the creation He envisioned so long ago when you were conceived in His heart.

This is the breakthrough He’s after: Your Freedom.

Kaleidoscope Summer: Review

There are few things in my life that I have trouble keeping my hands off. One of those things is a book. Especially free books. I’ll peruse the Amazon freebies and download several at a time, thinking it’ll be no trouble swimming through the pages. This is a terrific way to introduce yourself to an author or style of writing you’ve never met before.

Recently, I downloaded Kaleidoscope Summer by Rita Garcia. This delightful book is written in first person, alternatively from the male (Logan Delatorre) and female’s (Samantha Forrester) point of view, in which they each tell their story of new beginnings, heartache, romance, and a little suspense.

Normally, I struggle with first person point of view. I can’t be sure why. But Rita’s conversational style of writing drew me in. It was as though Logan, Samantha, the other characters, and I had taken a seat around a table at the nearby coffee shop for some coffee, pastry and some story time. Each gave their input into what happened that summer and how each member of this community of Serenity Cove grew from all they experienced. Logan and Samantha shared more intimate details regarding their internal struggles. Logan had endured the deaths of his parents, and then his grandparents before his twentieth birthday. Samantha fought against feelings of rejection and un-forgiveness towards those she thought should’ve been more trustworthy.

Revived: Story of Publishing a Christian Novel

I had the pleasure of reading this handbook, Revived: Story of Publishing a Christian Novel, on writing, penned by fellow author Jerry Slauter. And it was just that --a pleasure.

I have made it a concentrated effort to get hold of as many books on writing that I can. I haven't read many like this one. Throughout the pages, Jerry shares his journey, his insights, his trials and victories. He encourages, above all, every writer to determine why, or Who they're writing for, what their message is, and to remain true to that.

I especially like the encouragement to decide and remember Who I'm writing for, where the message's inspiration came from. He ties each insight together naturally with Scripture making it a conversational flow, rather than instructional, or clinical. Several spots felt as though I held a mirror in my hands and could see my own reflection. Along with these brief revelations, I could see how do-able the application would be for me.

This is a great handbook to keep on the nightstand (or wherever the most writing is done) for reference. It is an eBook, so keeping it close by is as easy as an eReader's favorites file.

This historical romantic suspense is full of twists and surprises that kept me riveted to the pages until I’d closed the back cover, satisfied that Ms. Ludwig had taken me on a journey with her characters into dangerous alleys, darkened streets, and the warmth and safety found in the arms of the most unlikely enemy. I’m waiting in eager anticipation of book 2 of this Edge of Freedom series.

I’m certain, if you like romantic suspense, you’ll love this.

The Woodland Series -- Review

There is no question: life has a way of kicking us in the gut at times, leaving us fighting for air. We kick and we flail, gasping for that needed oxygen. But sometimes, what we need is a little escape. A gentle reminder that hope can spring from the rubble at our feet.

What I’ve found in the midst of my own scrambling for breath is a peak into another’s life. Since voyeurism is unwelcomed, I’ve taken to fiction. While some will dive headlong into suspense, thrillers, or tragic tales, I’ve been immersed in romance.

Yes. I said romance.

I have spent the past weekend on retreat—in Saint Clair Shores, MI—where men and women struggle for their faith, to find peace with a God who seems unseen an silent at times, and even pastors who simply want to be known for their humanity as well as their calling to shepherd God’s church.

How did I do this? Isn’t this town smack in the middle of Detroit’s suburbs? Really? Why not the woods up in the Huron National Forest?

Well, Marianne Evans has crafted a series of books (4 total) that take us to the lush, almost serene atmosphere of Woodland Church, where its proximity to Lake St. Clair, offers a perfect setting for anyone to escape.

This pair is brought together by a church beautification project, but Collin has painful memories, guilt, and anger keeping him from being part of the church. His attraction to Daveny is called into question when she asserts that his separation from God is a deal-breaker. I won’t spoil it for you, but suffice it to say that those Collin feels he must protect the most from his painful truths, are the very people he needs most to help heal from said truths.

The two are re-united after years of following their own paths. As seen in the previous book, Tyler’s interest in Amy is beyond that of friendship. But now, Amy’s got baggage that keeps her from being able to accept that she is worthy to stand by his side. She and her daughter, Pyper, must work through trust issues and learn that regardless of bad decisions, there’s always hope in unconditional love and acceptance. Through each book, there unfolds the passion and intimacy we all crave. First with God, and then with someone to love and receive love in return. Each book can be read as a stand-alone, or in sequence. Revisiting each character throughout the series helps this reader to see how each member of Marianne's cast has grown from year to year and taken hold of their new-found faith in God and love.

Marianne’s vision for presenting each story, each heartfelt scene, seems to leap from the pages. I love Ken Lucerne’s words, “I love to watch God’s plan unfold” (paraphrased). God’s plan will not always go our way, but will always surprise us with unspeakable joy.

And quite frankly, this week has been one of those gut-wrenching weeks --personally-- and delving into the lives of these people has come as a refreshing tool. Sunbursts around the storm clouds.

"Heart's Key" by Marianne Evans delivers hope, love, and restored faith with fluent writing and passion for the broken heart being made whole.

Until a couple years ago, I was quite selective and perhaps a bit snobbish over the books I’d read. And then, I began to review books for various publishing houses. A year ago, I had the opportunity to join a publisher’s list of final proofreaders. This meant I’d get to see the book before it hit the shelves and have part in the author’s success.

What I found during this time is that every now and again, I come across a book that takes hold of my heart and won’t let go until I’ve read every word. I find that I’ve been introduced to an author who has been selected by God to present a story that’s close to His heart, and they do it well.

One such author is Marianne Evans. I’ve seen her name come across my writers’ groups’ forums, skimmed announcements of her upcoming releases, and thought to myself how fun it would be to get an opportunity to review that book. I won’t tell which one that one is because it isn’t out—yet. BUT, I did get to read that book—as a final reader with Pelican Book Group. And when I did, I was hooked on Marianne’s writing style.

When it isreleased I’ll post a review.

This book, however, stirred in me the desire to read more of her work. When Marianne told me that her Woodland Series was set in my neighborhood, I knew those were the ones to get.

This past weekend, I downloaded the series into my Kindle and read Heart’s Key (Pelican Book Group, 2011). It is the fourth of the series, but for personal (and professional) reasons, I chose to deviate from the sequence. After having experienced previous books, I assumed I’d be unable to put this book down until finished.

And I was right.

Throughout the story, Heart’s Key unveils the trauma stemming from abuse and the journey to healing. I was transported from St. Clair Shores, MI to Tennessee. The “stars” of this book, Tyler Brock and Amy Maxwell deliver the message that there is hope after disastrous decisions. There is healing. And there is love waiting if we’ll open ourselves to it.

What’s a girl supposed to do? Meredith Hayes loves her cousin and would hate hurting her or damaging her hopes of a good husband, but she also finds her hairs raising more from apprehension than anticipation when considering the man her aunt and uncle have chosen to be her husband. She has deep loyalty issues (and a girlhood dream of heroes coming to her aid—and true love) that bleed out from years of gratitude to a young man who rescued her from harm. Then there’s her faith, prayer, and trust that God will guide her into His will.

Enter, the man: Travis Archer's objective is to keep out all would-be enemies to the Archer family and estate. He'd rescued Meredith once, and now twelve years later he is still steadfastly protecting his land and three younger brothers. And yet, he has all but forgotten the ten year old girl he helped, although it meant leaving Archer land and breaking a promise to his father two years earlier. I won’t spoil the story for you; but, when I opened my envelope from Bethany House on Saturday evening, I immediately peeled back the front cover and began to read the prologue aloud, with my husband listening. Usually, I skim through the pages of the book, try to see where it’s headed, and then proceed with reading. In this case, I finished the prologue, continued on into chapter one, two, three, and so on. My husband going along for the journey. Soon, though, I quit reading aloud and curled up on my sofa, a ravenous reader, taking in every word, scene, and turn to the plot.

Eight hours later, I was closing the book, a sigh escaped my lips. This historical romance is a heartwarming, endearing tale laced thematically with trust. Trust in each other, those outside our safe and comfortable surroundings, and ultimately in God. Karen Witemeyer has developed herhero and heroine, Travis and Meredith, with such care that I felt as though I was reading the story of her family's history. There's depth and genuine struggle involved in their actions and reactions. I laughed with them (and at him) when they fought to do the honorable thing. I celebrated with them when they overcame their greatest obstacles. And I sighed with relief when they escaped those nearly tragic ends.

Over the past two years, I have been reading (seemingly) nonstop, between analyzing literature for English classes I’m taking, proofing books for a small publishing house, reviews, and leisure. I can honestly say this is one of the most delightful reads I’ve encountered in a long time. I felt as though I'd been taken on a literary retreat. The characters have imprinted their images in my heart to such a degree that I keep going back to “see” them inside those pages.

My Own Worst Enemy

Self-doubt?

Accusation?

Sabotage!

I heard a friend recently describe her heart-pain as the peeling away a bandaid. Along with the sticky tape, comes the hair and flesh. It’s painful. No one likes it. There is something worse, though. Debriding. This treatment is used to remove the dead or damaged tissue from a wounded area, usually done in a clinic with a scraping tool, by the wound care specialist. I’ve been present most times when my husband’s doctor used this procedure on his cellulitis infected legs. This man, who used to roll boulders around, load pallets of brick, shovel mounds of topsoil, nearly cried.

As badly as I felt for him, I was glad the wounds were being addressed. They began to heal at a much quicker speed than hidden beneath the dead tissue. Pink, fleshy tissue took over and soon, pain subsided.

Why am I telling you this?

Just this week, I experienced something similar. However, the debriding was of my heart, and the physician—Jesus, through the writing of Janet Davis and her latest release, My Own Worst Enemy: How to stop holding yourself back.

Page after page, Mrs. Davis uncovers another layer coated with lies that have saturated my life. Day after day, I’ve found myself relating to either her personal example, or the woman she chose to illuminate and examine in Scripture. Each chapter covers an element of our character as women and how words—regardless of intent from their speaker—perceptions, and experiences often sabotage us and keep us from fulfilling the desire of God’s heart … to shine. Whether it be fear of being prideful, or honestly feeling inadequate, Mrs. Davis shares with us that God has embedded in each one of us dreams, goals, desires, a voice, and a vision that He wants us to experience and live out.

Each chapter begins with a poem, a question to consider—something to get us thinking about our story, and then it ends with “your story” where she asks a series of questions, encourages us to write or share those stories, and grow, heal, and become stronger through them.

Personally, I found it very interesting that on the day I questioned whether God had truly called me to write was the day I read about Mrs. Davis’ personal struggle with what she believed God calling her to do—to write. The exact words she uttered, I had just spoken over myself. Coincidence? No.

My Own Worst Enemy is an incredible book, encouraging women to grow into all that God has destined us to be. Whether through individual study or small group, this book is a great tool to debride the lies from our hearts and begin to live the way were meant to live—life abundant.

Out on a Wing

In 1997, I traveled from the comfort of my home to the barrios of Managua, Nicaragua in search of God. Where I was at felt most desert-like. His presence was missing. Exhaustion came quickly and lingered long.

It was foolishness for me to go. We didn’t have the extra cash lying around and my children were 3 and 5 years old. They needed their mom.

But, I had to find Him. And I did . . .

Our flight landed in Houston, TX where we were to transfer flights from domestic to international. We had about 20 minutes to sit, waiting to board our connecting flight and I spent it staring out into the overcast, dark afternoon sky—a reflection of all that was inside.

After boarding, I found my seat next to the window and watched as our plane tipped its nose upward and we climbed into the clouds. Above the clouds was brilliant sunshine, golden rays streaked the clouds below—a rainbow of color bouncing from wingtip to window, aweing me with its majesty. It was then that I heard, “Even when it’s overcast and you can’t see beyond the clouds, I AM always here.”

I was ready to turn the plane around and go home where my babies waited for me.

Once again, I’ve planned a trip, believing—hoping—this is God’s appointment and not my own foolish desires pressing me forward.

On paper, this is foolish. We have less money now than we did in 1997. I have four children ranging in ages from 19 (20 in Sept.) to 9 (10 in Aug.). It’s the end of the school year. Our 18 year old son is graduating. But many around me, especially hubby, have pressed me to continue with the plan. “This is God’s appointment for you.” Jeff says. “He’s going to do something in your writing while there.” Even when in the hospital two weeks ago, he insisted, “You’ll NOT cancel this trip. It’s important you go.”

Did I mention we haven’t any money?

At this moment, God has begun to show His opinion regarding this trip. After I return, I will fill in the details, but suffice it to say, He has had a way with making me cry because of His amazing goodness and His ability to surpass man’s idea of provision, and renders us speechless with His own. What I know, right now, is that He has begun something and I better remember my notebook and pen so I can write down everything He does from now until I return.

The Forgiven Duke... Review

Have you read The Guardian Duke? No? Definitely consider it before diving into The Forgiven Duke. You have time before The Forgiven Duke is released (July 2012). As part two of Jamie Carie’s three-part series, The Forgiven Duke picks up where The Guardian Duke leaves us. It doesn’t skip a beat.

Our heroine, Lady Alexandria Featherstone, continues her quest to find her parents who’ve disappeared a year earlier leaving the prince regent to believe, or maybe for appearances’ sake, them to be deceased. Why would he need to do this? That is for you to discover along with Alex when she travels the seas to Iceland, and then across the terrain of Iceland’s land. Clues and stories surrounding the object of Alex’s parents’ search stir the intrigue and anticipation of winning the prize. Danger lurking about, decisions whether to trust or not arise, Alex’s companion lets us know whether he is who and what he says.

Gabriel’s—Duke of St. Easton and Lady Featherstone’s guardian—affliction brings him to a new level of trust in God. He comes to realize how much he’d taken for granted and learns to be thankful in his situation; although, it does prove problematic when encountering men bent on doing him bodily harm.

Foy Pour Devoir (Faith for Duty)

In the end, Alex and Gabriel come to the place where they must admit their weaknesses and find the courage to trust, not only God but each other. They learn to walk in forgiveness; but, can this new knowledge hold their relationship together when Gabriel learns of circumstances that would ordinarily be scorned in his circles? Forgiveness and trust will be paramount to the health of their life together.

Valens et Volens (Willing and Able)

Unlike the first book, I was instantly engaged in this sequel. Of course, Jamie Carie (as stated in the previous review) spent considerable time laying the groundwork for this tale. By the end of book 1, I knew each character—or felt we did—and had a sense of which ones I could trust and those whose motives I questioned. Throughout book 2, I found myself wishing someone would come to Gabriel’s aid. I wanted Alex to come to her senses and see clearly who was for her and who was out to take her fortune. In the end, I do see her hoping she has what it takes to face her future with Gabriel, however the days ahead turned out. (Please forgive the intentional ambiguity. Don’t want to spoil it for you.)

The Guardian Duke... Review

What would you do if you were told your parents, who thrived on adventure, were missing and presumed dead; top it off with the news that someone you’ve never met is now your guardian and every decision you make, every penny you spend, everything you do must first pass through his hands for approval? What if this new guardian was the Duke of St. Easton, presumed to be one of the wealthiest and most powerful men in the world?

Would you feel comforted in knowing your affairs were taken care of? Would you balk at the situation?

Jamie Carie has woven a tale of just such a scenario. Gabriel, Duke of St. Easton has been assigned the duty of overseeing the affairs and eventual season of courtship concerning Lady Alexandria Featherstone, a 20 year old woman who has yet to experience life outside the walls of her castle on Holy Island.

Throughout the story, we’re taken on a journey across the countryside of England and Ireland. We get to eavesdrop on conversations, dropping clues regarding our next destination. The Duke battles between frustration over his ward’s inability to follow direction, his fascination with the feeling he gets whenever reading her letters addressed to him, and the anger and helplessness he faces when he is afflicted with a weakness for which he can’t find a cause or a cure.

This first installment of Jamie’s trilogy spends considerable time introducing us to the people involved. Everyone the lady meets instantly adore her and wish to help. Well, except for those who are out to capture her and what it is that she seeks. Personally, I struggled connecting and maintaining that connection; perhaps it has to do with my knowledge that this was the first in a series? I don't know. However, as this book comes to a close, we begin to see the danger following her, question the motives of her companion, and hope for the Duke to finally get within grasping distance.

I’ll leave the details for you to discover.

The only trouble I found with reading this book is the end. I was invested in Gabriel’s determination and devotion and Alexandria’s quest, and didn’t want it to end where it did.

The Woodcarver -- A Review

In the faith-based film, The Woodcarver, takes us on a journey from anger to forgiveness, hopelessness to hopeful, ready to quit to willing to begin again.

When the church in town is vandalized 15-year old Matthew Stevenson -- the vandal -- must make restitution by way of repairing what he'd broken or damaged. His father, the man in charge of the church's renovation project, doesn't understand nor does he take time to listen to understand what has made Matthew angry enough to bring destruction. His mother, tries but has trouble connecting with Matthew. It isn't until Matthew begins working with the town's woodcarver, Ernest Otto, that tempers spike to explosive levels and the wall already between father and son grows taller and thicker -- impenetrable. However, it is also through Ernest that this family begins to find the answers to their struggles and the One who's been missing from their family for several years.

The Woodcarver, is a great film for families. The principles taught are laden with faith arrows pointing to God. The writers, Thomas Makowski and Jack Nasser, have taken the "What would Jesus do?" and brought it to a practical, every day experience, rather than an ornament to wrap someone's wrist.

While I would recommend this film for families everywhere, I would not recommend it as an evangelistic tool. For someone who has yet to place their faith in Jesus -- or to even know what He's like -- the idea of considering what Jesus would do would have little meaning. On the other hand, families who teach and follow the ways of Christ, may find this a helpful, maybe even inspirational and encouraging, that all is not lost when things fall apart. They can be salvaged. Miracles do happen. When viewed in our home, it was a great conversation starter, something to help us to see things from each others' perspectives.
