Parts of Speech for Beginners: Pronouns

Before little ones even know what a ‘part of speech’ is, they are using pronouns. And no doubt, correct usage comes with correct modeling. New English speakers, ESLs, are also developing pronoun skills.

Right along with color words, these teeny-tiny words are some of the first that little ones learn to read. Why not make it fun!

Pronoun Practice

is a FREE and fun set of activities to practice 12 of these small little words.

There are 3 pages in color to use in small group or center activity.

And there are 3 pages in black and white for independent practice.

12 flash cards are included to duplicate and give to each child.

Have your little ones circle the correct pronoun or cut apart the pictures and use clothespins to make clip cards.

Go a step further and use the cards for oral language by making sentences about the picture using correct pronouns.

Task Cards with High Frequency Words

How would you like to have a set of Task Cards that offer 216 different possibilities? This set of 12 task cards work with 18 different word lists (5 words each) that start with Dolch Pre-Primer words and end with 3rd grade Dolch words. Think how you could differentiate with so many combinations.

Choose the lists best suited to your group and decide which tasks best fit their skill level.

Each task card has a response sheet in black & white to keep a record of each student’s work. With a different list of words, the skills can be revisited over and over with progressive results.

Making Connections

There they are…..sweet little attentive listeners. You are talking about something that is happening in the story and you ask a question. So many hands go up. You pick an eager hand-raiser. And that sweet little attentive listener gives you the most off-topic, random comment that you can imagine.

Did that little one make a text-to-self connection?

In my opinion, the reading strategy of ‘Making Connections’ needs to be taught. True connections are not the same as random thoughts that pop into our heads. I have created a simple set of pictured task cards to intentionally model and ‘think-aloud’ the process of making a true connection.

Writing pages are included for those students who are ready to write down their connections. Take a look at the complete product here.

Dry Erase Boards…DIY

DIY + Dry Erase = Happy Me!

Pinterest has all kinds of wonderful ideas for making dry erase boards. I am not sure where this idea originated, but it fit exactly what was in my craft closet. And now I am on a mission to make sets of these for my favorite teacher buddies.

Start with a package of plastic plates. I want to try a mix and match set next. Look around for cutesy stuff that you already have or forage the bins at Michael’s, Hobby Lobby or your favorite crafting store.

Heat up your glue gun and have at it. Voila!

Making Patterns with a Theme

Nothing freshens up the practice of a familiar skill than using a seasonal theme. Making Patterns can be more than just a practice of AB, ABB, AAB, ABC order. Using the themes in these sets gives little ones practice with more than just colors and shapes. In some of the differentiated options, a good bit of visual discrimination is needed to know what comes next.

Add in another layer of primary skills with a color, cut and paste version for classwork or homework.

Keep an extra set of all of the cute pictures (thank you, TpT clipartists) for each theme to use in other ways. Make your own patterns, scoop out a handful of pictures and graph them, or use in number sense practice.

I have 2 sets of ‘Making Patterns” sets in my Made For Learning store at TpT.

Set A for fall has these themes: Apples, Pumpkins, Leaves, Halloween, Thanksgiving and the Christmas set pictured here.

Set B for spring has these themes: Snowmen, Valentines, Plants, Flowers, Easter and Butterflies.

Parts of the Body Word Work

Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes is a staple in preschool and Pre-K classrooms, but sooner or later those little ones need to connect the written words to those body parts. Try introducing the words in groups (lower body parts, face parts, parts beginning with ‘h’, etc.), then practice with the puzzle pieces. Good place to differentiate.

Make up your own verses to ‘Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes’. How about…. ‘Legs, Ankles, Feet and Toes’ or ‘Neck, Elbows, Hands and Knees’. Have your sweet ones pick 4 body parts to draw and label. Or send your favorite stuffed toy (or real child) to the pretend nurse and put band-aids on the named body parts. Use a sharpie on real band-aids or print from the Parts of the Body packet.

Use the body words in a booklet with other sight words to make a fun take home reader.

Review body labeling with your holiday units, community helper units or All About Me units. As I am sure you know already, cookie sheets make great magnet boards.

Thanksgiving Three-of-a-Kind is a 'Made For Learning' game that practices number sense with numbers 1-15. I love how you can differentiate by choosing the numbers you are practicing. Some of the little ones that have played this game are Pre-K kiddos that were only ready for numbers 1-5. Another group of 1st graders loved playing with all 15 number sets. Tally marks are included as well for students who are ready.

Start by passing out the 'Play' mats that you want each child to fill. (3 mats each seems to work well.) Choose the type of card to begin the game. (ex. I chose the numeral cards in the game pictured.) Each child chooses one card from the deck and puts it on his mat. Continue until all mats being used have a starting card. (There are 15 sets, so 5 children could play with 3 mats each. If you limit the sets...say, only use 1-10, then you will have fewer cards to use.)

Players draw a card from the picture or tally deck and see if it belongs on one of their own mats. If yes, they place it on the correct mat and play continues to the next person. If it does not belong on the mats, it is put in a discard pile and play continues on. (I like to allow for strategy here with some students. Do they need a tally card or a picture card to complete their set?) Reuse cards from the discard pile as needed. Play until one student has filled all mats or play until all mats are filled.

To make this into a cut and paste activity, just print on plain paper in grayscale and voila! It would be fun to give to a small group to complete together. And wouldn't this make a cute number line!!
