What is UCAS Apply:

UCAS Apply is the online application tool used when applying for higher education courses at universities and colleges within the UK. UCAS Apply allows you to fill in your UCAS Application form from any internet connected PC, either at college, at home or anywhere you have access to the web.

Your application form can be completed all at once, or over a period of time at your convenience. Until you have fully completed the form and sent it to your Personal Tutor (referee) - so they can attach a reference, you are able to change or delete any of the information you have previously entered.

You can also pay for your UCAS application securely online by debit or credit card (the preferred method), or if you need to, through the college. If you choose to apply for only one course the application fee is £5, for two or more choices the fee is £15 (maximum six choices).

The university interview format:

In essence, the actual interview will offer you the chance to see the campus and individual department, allowing you to ask questions and for the university to check you out.

Sometimes you will be invited for the day with an interview at some point during the day.

You may have a general admissions interview, checking your UCAS form details and/or an interview by the department in which you will study. Sometimes the interview will be a mixture of both.

You may have to bring along examples of your work (portfolio for design courses) or even have a short assessment as part of the day.

There may be the chance to meet current students.

The letter you receive offering you an interview will normally spell out what to expect or to bring with you - if it is not clear then phone them to check what is required.

University motivation questions

Why do you want to study for a degree? What do you think university can offer you? What else, apart from study, interests you about university? Why do you want to study at this university?

Example answer- I believe that studying at university level will benefit my future career and I look forward to the opportunity of university to broaden my horizons and build up my skills and confidence.

Subject related questions

Why do you want to study (whatever subject you have applied for) Chemistry, Geography, Surveying, Physiotherapy etc?

What do you know about the course? What attracts you to this course?

You may want to study that subject because

* You want to study a subject further and in more depth
* It is a strong interest and your best subject
* You will need it for your future career idea
* That university has a particular type of course that is suited to you
* The only way to qualify for some future career is through that subject
* Of a mixture of the above
* Or some other reason.

Let the interviewer understand your personal motivation for the subject, giving evidence and examples if possible.

I want to study geology because I have enjoyed this at A level and want to take this knowledge further. I particularly like the structure of this university course because of....... A recent field trip confirmed my enthusiasm for....

And finally the topical or situational questions

Topical questions

Interviewers love to ask your opinion on something topical, that is something in the news or related to your subject. For medicine this might result in a question about medical ethics and euthanasia or on the future of the NHS. Prepare to offer an opinion!

You can do this by reading the national serious newspapers online or in hard copy and pick out current stories that seem linked to your subject. Assemble them in a folder and think about how you could respond to a question on these topics.

How to offer an opinion

* Consider your gut reaction to the topic and how others with alternative views might argue
* Show balanced thinking and present your ideas and conclude with your particular view
* Be prepared to justify your angle on the topic

Situational questions (sometimes hypothetical)

These often start with

Give me an example of a time when... you dealt with a problem, or overcame some obstacles, or worked in as team to achieve an outcome etc

Or

If you were asked to....do something creative about ......what would you do?

With these questions it is a good idea to ask for them to be repeated so you gain time for a considered response. Try and show lateral thinking (not just one dimensional thinking but all round the subject thinking) and show how you weigh up and consider carefully.

Remember, you do not need to parrot text book answers but show who you are and why you want to study at that university. Preparation (that means considering likely questions) means that you will be ready for them whatever happens and you will come across naturally confident.

General questions

Tell me about yourself? How would you describe yourself? Tell us about your current course? What are you best at? What are your main interests?

These are self awareness questions, so think now about your key personality characteristics, your general and study interests. Try and be relevant - that is, mention those personality qualities and interests that match the course.

Example answer - I am a motivated, quietly confident person. I like Chemistry and Biology best, particularly those science areas that are health related. I am fascinated by genetics and the impact it can have on future life health. In my spare time I enjoy being with friends and occasionally help out at a local playscheme.

NOTE - interviewers react well to enthusiasm so using words like 'fascinated' helps to give an enthusiastic impression.

Bologna Process

The Bologna Process is an intergovernmental initiative which aims to create a European Higher Education Area (EHEA) by 2010 and to promote the European system of higher education worldwide. It now has 46 participating countries and it is conducted outside the formal decision-making framework of the European Union. Decision-making within the Process rests on the consent of all the participating countries.

It was launched in 1999 when Ministers from 29 European countries, including the UK, met in Bologna and signed a declaration establishing what was necessary to create a EHEA by the end of the decade. The broad objectives of the Bologna Process became: to remove the obstacles to student mobility across Europe; to enhance the attractiveness of European higher education worldwide; to establish a common structure of higher education systems across Europe, and; for this common structure to be based on two main cycles, undergraduate and graduate.

In its drive to improve the quality of higher education and, in turn, human resources across Europe, the Bologna Process will play a key role in contributing to the EU’s Lisbon Strategy goals which aim to deliver stronger, lasting growth and to create more and better jobs.

Since 1999 Ministers have met four times to assess progress towards the creation of the EHEA – in Prague in 2001, in Berlin in 2003 and in Bergen in 2005. The UK hosted the ministerial summit in London in 2007. The next summit will take place in Leuven and Louvain-la-Neuve in April 2009.

Following the success of the Bologna Process in higher education across Europe, the EU's Bruges-Copenhagen Process was launched to foster similar cooperation in vocational education and training.

In 2005 the Europe Unit produced the first edition of its own Guide to the Bologna Process. This was updated by the Unit's Guide to the Bologna Process - Edition 2 which was published at the end of 2006.

The University of Sheffield was an early adopter of Erasmus Mundus programmes and recently welcomed its 4th cohort of European and overseas students onto its innovative EuroPubHealth programme. Since 2006, the School of Health and Related Research (ScHARR) has played a major role in developing EuroPubHealth, a two year, integrated European Public Health Masters programme, delivered by a consortium consisting of six leading European Higher Education Institutions (HEIs).

Obtaining the Erasmus Mundus badge has been an important esteem indicator for both ScHARR and The University of Sheffield and demonstrates our continued support for the Bologna process. We receive over 400 applications for Erasmus Mundus studentships each year and a number of students on the programme have gone on to work as researchers within ScHARR.

The EuroPubHealth consortium includes the University of Copenhagen; EHESP (Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sante Publique), Rennes (Co-ordinator); University of Rennes - 1, Rennes; Jagiellonian University of Cracow; Andalusian School of Public Health, Granada; The University of Sheffield.

Under the terms of the programme, students receive their core public health training in year one in either Sheffield or Granada and then travel to one of the other consortium HEIs for additional training in year two. They also undertake two ‘integration’ modules at the end of year one and year two in Rennes, which bring together themes from across the combined programme. Students successfully completing EuroPubHealth are awarded two degrees – a Master of Public Health (MPH) from the University where they received their core training and one from the institution where they attended for their additional training.

Attempting to harmonise the delivery of our course across six HEIs, all operating within distinct pedagogical cultures and institutional frameworks, has not been without its challenges. However, the consortium is committed to working together effectively to overcome these, and we have made significant progress in terms of working towards joint selection of students and recognition and assessment of work. We look forward to continuing to receive students and scholars on to EuroPubHealth in the future.

Over time, there's been a fair amount of controversy over the WHO's methodology, and so the Commonwealth Foundation began a new project to assemble a comparative international picture: They chose seven countries and conducted deep, ongoing polls of both patients and health-care providers. The surveys test experiences with the system, cost questions, efficiency, convenience, health outcomes and much more. The result is a comparison based not on an outsider’s methodology but on the experiences of patients and providers.

Here, too, the U.S. underperforms. Before looking at that data, it's always worth reminding people of how much more we pay than anybody else.
