Review: TV: Ghost Adventurers

Ghost Adventurers is on the Travel Channel and it's completely ridiculous. That is one of the main reasons I enjoy it so much. The main guy's name is Zak. He and two crew members go around to haunted places and investigate. They all at like high schoolers. They taunt the mean ghosts and are no where near scientific.

On the other hand, unlike many shows of this genre, these guys talk to priests and have even had some come in for part of their investigation.

They always lock themselves in to whatever they are investigating. They also do reenactments, which I personally really enjoy. By the end of most episodes I'm fairly spooked, but I really enjoy it.

As of late I've decided that Zak, the leader, acts how Michael Scott would act if he was a paranormal investigator. Thinking that when ever Zak tries to aggravate the "sprits" makes it even sillier.

Craft: Home Made Laundry Detergent

After spending hours and hours on Pinterest, I have started trying things that I've seen on there. After I heard my boyfriends mom had made home made laundry detergent. I decided I had to try.

You have to grate a bar of soap.

It's the worst part. It took me several hours (probably because I decided to do it with a potato peeler), there were flakes everywhere, and I think next time I'll look into a better way of doing this.

For this recipe the number you need to remember is ONE

1 QT of water
1 grated bar of soap
1 cup of borax
1 cup of WASHING soda
1 gallon of water

You will need a milk jug or two to put it in. Clean one out and let it air dry before use.

Take your one qt of water bring to a boil and then add your soap flakes.

DON'T forget what you are making and stick the spoon in your mouth. It may look like a creamy broth, but it smells like an amazing bubble bath.

This is why you finely grate your soap. Those lumps take forever to dissolve.

After you see no soap particles, mix in one cup of each of these.

Just one cup

Stir stir stir until that is also dissolved. Then add your gallon of water.

It will separate. Leave room in your milk jug to shake it up. It's kind of a fun way to start your laundry.

When you do your laundry add 1/2 cup. (It called for 1/4 but I get better results with 1/2.) It's ok if it's a little lumpy.

Lets Review

1 QT of water

1 grated bar of soap

1 cup of borax

1 cup of WASHING soda

1 gallon of water

add 1/2 cup of this mix to your washings, but just clothes (not the dishes.

Beauty: What to do with all those samples

If you've every bought indie, You probably have several baggies, clamshells, or perhaps a small jar with a sample in it. Her are just a few of mine.

They are hard to organize. I'm always terrified to open mine. What if I accidentally dump it everywhere? Mostly I say: "I hate sticking my brush in this bag."

I began looking for a solution. At first I was just putting them in jars, but that didn't really solve the sorting issue.

It was just more jars lost in my drawer of eye shadows. Also, they weren't any easier to take traveling.

One day I was at JoAnns and I thought I would look around. This is what I found! It was the the section for beads. They are regular sized jars (but tall instead of wide) my labels always fit on top AND it came in a clear plastic box!

Transferring my samples was easier than expected. I would just use a piece of paper as a funnel.

Then take the sticker and put it on top. That way I always know what it is and where it came from.

It fits in one of my small travel makeup bags and I still have room for brushes and primer. I always sort by color. It makes what I'm looking for easier to find and it looks so pretty!

Resolutions: Week 7

Style:
1) Wear everything in my closet. If I don't wear it, I donate it.

Sorting through my old closet as I move into my new one. Hopefully I will have all unused done soon!

2) Wear at least one skirt or dress a week.

I have worn a few dresses and skirts since the last post. That brings it too: 3.5/52 If I can lose some weight and when the weather warms up, this will be so much easier.

3) Loose 30lbs

Apparently challenging myself to work out was my breaking point. Today I started my day with some pilates. Hopefully I can get to the gym soon. I should really use the membership I have through my job. Thought about weight watchers as well. Anyone have advice? For now I'm just trying to eat better. I may try using an app to track calories.

4) Do a LOTD or EOTD once a month

I've done one so far. I need to do one for Febuary.

5) DON'T CUT MY HAIR IN 2012

The purple I put in it FOREVER ago is showing again. I have dyed it twice since then. I may need to go to a real salon and get it done.

6) Give my blog a more consistent look

I'd still like to create a banner, but I haven't yet. It's on the todo list.

Money:

7) Tithe (give an offering to my church) and put money in my savings every paycheck.

I have been doing GREAT at this. It makes my out look on money issues so much better.

8) Coupon and put my saving in my savings. Keep track and then use that for Christmas money! We'll see how it goes!

It's higher than $6 just from my Kroger card. My grandma sent me a lot of coupons with my Valentines card and my brother just gave me his extra college dry goods. Andrew bought me a few papers. I need to go through and update my book. I think my # is around $30 so I put about that much in my savings.

Craft:

9) Finished all my unfinished projects. (sewing and knitting)

I have been working on this recently. Nothing is finished yet.

10) Finish my LA scrapbook. (I did a semester there in 2008.)

This has kind of taken a back seat.

11) Go see Rocky Horror in Costume at a Theater.

Tinker is a movie I was a part of in 2011. We won the 48 hour hour film festival and now our film is on the road. We were at the Beloit International Film Festival this past weekend. If you want to see Tinker click here. It's 7 mins long.

Andrew and I also made our way through Chicago on the way home. I wish I would have thought to get a picture of us with his friends, but it was a blur once we got there till we left.

Review: Movie: The Woman in Black

I saw The Woman in Black recently. Wow! It was the scariest thing I've seen in awhile. I left the theater terrified. It completely lived up to all of it's claims.

Daniel Radcliffe at first felt a bit too young to be playing a dad, but then I realized that people my age are dads. This would have been even more common in that era. He filled his roll in such a lovely way that it was a perfect fit.

In the first few moments of the movie you see 3 young girls commit suicide together. There isn't any gore. They don't even need it.

The film it's self is beautiful. Every shot is well composed. The sets don't feel like sets. It's so realistic. THAT is what makes it so scary.

It's definitely going on my must see for Halloween list. Look forward to that at the end of September.

I feel like this whole movie was me waiting for the last 20 minutes of the movie.

The ending is AMAZING. I was a little shocked, but the rest of the movie didn't really impress me.

Anyway, it's a good way to start the month of Valentines.

Review: App: Viggle

I am always on the look out for cool new apps. About once a week I check the featured apps in the iTunes store. If I see a free one that catches my eye. I usually give it a download. This week I found Viggle. Yes it's another one of those 'check-in' apps, but this one raises the stakes. You aren't checking into places or scanning barcodes, but you are checking in to the show you are watching.

I started with Shark Tank.

It was easier than I thought. Viggle listened to the show I was watching and then had me make sure it was checking it into the right thing. Then I was cooking with grease. At first I didn't see any of my points being added, but after about 5 minutes they started pouring in!

I stepped away for just a minute. When I came back my Viggle had notified me of several points I was awarded.

While you are checked into a show. Viggle will give you options to collect even more points. I've had some trouble with any trivia questions, but all of the trailers and videos work fine.

If you aren't watching any show, but still want to collect points you can browse featured shows. If it has the play sign on it then you can watch it now for points.

Before I knew it I had enough points for an Amazon.com gift card! If I had a Kindle this would be a good way to get books for free. This app is really easy to use. The points add up really quick! It's also suppose to work with any recorded shows you have (within two weeks of air). I haven't tried it with Hulu.com, but have been told it would work. I sent them an email to ask about it and they got back to me within the hour!!!

Have you heard of this app? If not would you give it a try or do you not have any device that this would be available on?

Baking: Flooding Cookies with Sugar Cookie Recipie

Sugar cookies, while common, are so much harder then they seem. The recipe needs to make stiff dough, but if it tastes too floury then it just kinds of ruins it. Once that is done then you have to roll, cut, bake, and decorate. It doesn't always work out.

FUN TIP: I never have owned a rolling pin. I always use a sturdy plastic cup for rolling! It's easy to wash and most things won't stick.

I was talking with a friend about cake icing recently and I tried to explain what 'flooding' meant when it came to cookies. I had never actually tried it. After thinking about it, I knew what my project would be for this week. Here is a really easy recipe.

1 1/2 cups butter, softened
2 cups white sugar
4 eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
5 cups all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
Directions

In a large bowl, cream together butter and sugar until smooth. Beat in eggs and vanilla. Stir in the flour, baking powder, and salt. Cover, and chill dough for at least one hour (or overnight).
Preheat oven to 400 degrees F (200 degrees C). Roll out dough on floured surface 1/4 to 1/2 inch thick. Cut into shapes with any cookie cutter. Place cookies 1 inch apart on ungreased cookie sheets.
Bake 6 to 8 minutes in preheated oven. Cool completely.

The white icing is regular vanilla from the can icing. The inside is food coloring, milk and powdered sugar. ( I always mix my milk and food coloring first. Then I add my powdered sugar until it's the right thickness for me.)

I quickly learned that my outline icing needed to be taller.

This should do the trick. I went ahead and outlined iced all of my cookies.

I bought this squeeze bottle at walmart for about 99 cents. It made flooding really easy.

Less is definitely more. I would start at one corner of the heart and see how much that icing would spread out.

It will run more than you expect. If you are impatient like me. Fill about half of one cookie and then go head and half fill the rest of your cookies. The icing takes sever hours to completely dry. (This may vary depending on the about of powdered sugar you used.)

That little bit of icing almost completely filled the inside. This just needs a bit of touching up.

YAY it looks so GOOD! I had a lot of mishaps. I would recommend just outlining about 3 cookies. Then flood. Make sure the icing is the right height. That way if you have an issue, you can adjust before you get to far into this project.

One really big ti[p:

Make sure you ice your cookies in a way that really connects your icing with your cookie. When I was doing thinner icing, I was rushing and my flood icing would actually spill out from UNDER my icing as you can see in this picture.

Make your cookies the day BEFORE you transport them. If your flood icing isn't dry all the way it will run all over everything. (This also happen to me.)

Geek chick added a few new colors during their Christmas - New Years sale. I'd been wanting a reason to use some of my coupon codes.

I bought my first lip gloss from them.

The lip gloss is Health Potion. It suppose to have a buttercream flavor, but I can't taste anything. I couldn't taste anything with the lipstick I bought either.

The full sized eye shadow is Combustable Lemon from the Portals Set.

The samples I bought were, Mountain and Ambassador. The free sample I received was Shammy... again. I wonder if they do it by month or sale.

I'd written something on my hand. All in this Tea, a documentary, on Netflix.

Health Potion is an awesome lip gloss with real staying power. In fact I have a hard time getting all of it off.

I ate and it was still there.
Shower? Still there.
Fell asleep in it, woke up, Still there.
And that was the first time I applied it.

It's not too bring or too dark. I think it's becoming one of my new favorite lip glosses!

Review: Movie: Masters of Horror: Brad Anderson: Sounds Like

I recently watched Masters of Horror: Brad Anderson: Sounds Like (That should be a link to nextlix. Let me know if it doesn't work.)

HOLY COW! It runs about 57 minutes, but it feels like 3 hours.

I really didn't like this movie. I didn't find it scary, but rather just kind of awful.

The main character is hyper aware of every sound he hears. It drives him crazy.

Afterwards I felt like I was being too loud. Opening a bag of chips or scraping the side of the bowl with my spoon, suddenly felt like I was yelling at the top of my lungs.

Not my cup of tea. Was it yours?

Baking: Potato Rolls (again)

I've done some half hearted quick posts on potato rolls. A quick recipe or a way to make them look fun, but it wasn't really a blog about making potato rolls. Let's do this for real!

Here is the recipe:
Ingredients:
1 cup mashed potatoes
1/2 cup sugar
2 eggs
1 pkg yeast (or 2 1/2 tsp)
1/2 cup lukewarm water
1 cup of milk (HOT - aka 2 mins in the microwave)
6 cups of flour
2/3 cups shortening
1 1/2 tsp salt

First I start with instant mashed potatoes.

I follow the instructions for microwaving on the box. (water, salt, and butter microwave till butter is melted.)

DING!

Add the cold milk.

Add potato flakes.

MIX!

Take one cup of mashed potatoes and cream it together with 1/2 cup of sugar.

Add two eggs.

Add 1 pkg of yeast or if you buy in the jar it should say on the back (mine says 2-1/2 teaspoons.)

If you aren't sure if you're yeast is good, you can proof it. To proof your yeast take the 1/2 cup of lukewarm water and put your yeast into that. if it bubbles it's good. If you see no change it's no good. Give it about 5+ minutes to sit.

If you AREN'T going to proof your yeast just put your lukewarm water into your mix.

Heat 1 cup of milk for about 2 minutes.

Add 2/3 cup of shortening and 1-1/2 teaspoons of salt.

Then mix.

Once it has mixed well, add your six cups of flour one cup at a time.

This will make a slightly sticky dough. If you like it stiffer you can add a 7th cup of flour or put it in your fridge.

Once you're dough looks like this ....

transfer it to a well oiled bowl. ( I spray mine with pam.)

I like to flatten it in the bowl and then spray it with cooking spray.

Then cover with a towel.

You're going to bake it at 350 (fahrenheit)

I like to use left over dough from rolls for mini pizzas. (These are some cookie skillets I got for Christmas.)

Beauty: LOTD: The Green Room

This is the finished look. It DOES NOT cause eye crossing :P

LOTD stands for Look of the Day. This is my first one! I decided to name it "Green Room." A green room is where actors wait before coming on stage. For a long time at work I felt like I was waiting to get on stage, waiting to accept more responsibility, and mostly ready for full time. Right before Thanksgiving I was told I would soon be full time, but I wasn't holding my breath. I'd heard that before. This was the real deal though. As of January 1st I am full time and all my benefits kick in by mid-March.

I primed my skin for my foundation with skin rev-er upper. After I applied my with foundation and blush from Geek Chic called Codex and Nerdgasm I primed my eyes with Pixie Epoxy.

Then I looked like this.

Then I started with my eyes. I used Inevitable betrayal on the outer half and Where's the Mountain Brew? on the inner half.

I lined my eyes with Tokidoki felt tip liner.

After that I curled my eyelashes and then used the Falsies mascara.

Resolutions2: 3rd week of Weight Loss

So far I've given up fast foods, sugary coffee drinks, and chocolate. The first week I didn't use any of my cheats, last week I used 2/3 of my cheats. This week I think I used all of my cheats.I had some chocolate, I made tea with regular sugar, and had Chinese food.

I had Energy Bites by Smashed Peas and Carrots as a healthy snack this week. I think I'll show you how to make them this weekend. Although she does an amazing job.

I don't really know what else to give up. Instead, I'm going to challenge myself to work out 3 times, before my next post. I think it's the next step to be healthier.

Review: Movie: Henry Poole is Here

While the cover suggests an excited comedy or romantic comedy it's not. It's much more dramatic. It's simpler than I thought it would be. I kept thinking he was a scam artist or that he was up to something.

I really enjoyed the overall look of the film. It's quite beautiful. It really pushes the idea of the movie forward. The colors and sets convey as much emotion as the actors do.

The message is pretty comforting. It makes you wonder if the same thing were to happen to you how would you react? Believe or deny?

Craft: Building a Twin Lens Reflex Camera

I recently bought a plastic camera from the Photojoto store.

It arrived about 12 days early. How awesome!

It had this funny sticker on the front and I wasn't sure what it meant.

The sent me a little toy dino! How fun!

As I open the box I suddenly realize how hard this might be.

It's almost done.

Yay it's finished. It took about four hours, but I had some instruction reading problems. I ended up looking it up. This is ALMOST the same camera, but it's not exact. There is also this stop motion assembly video on youtube.

Beauty: Geek Chic: Foundation, Blush, and Eyeshadow

I received my first Christmas - New years sales package from Geek Chic yesterday.

I was SO excited because aside from eyeshadows, I also bought my first real indie foundation and blush!

I also decided to pick up a lot of new greens. You'll never guess which was my sample :P (hint: it's a sample size that isn't green)

As usual their seals are most wonderful! As it turned out most needed. My blush got a little out of control inside the packaging, but thanks to this seal, none of it escaped.

I decided to get the foundation because it's the lightest one and a recent sample helped me decide it is a pretty good match.

The blush I bought is which is a dupe (cheaper alternative, duplicate) of Multiple Orgasms by NARS which runs around $27.

I have to admit I was crazy excited for this order to arrive.

Resolutions2: 2nd week of Weight Loss

This week I weighed 154.3. The most I've ever weighed is 160 so 154.3 is awful. I'm only going to weigh myself once a week so I don't obsess over every tenth of a pound.

I've given up fast foods and chocolate so far. The first week I didn't use any of my cheats, but this week I had a few oreos and sweet and sour chicken. I used 2/3 of my cheats.

This week I'm giving up sugary coffee drinks. I can still have coffee, but it's has to be made with no-fat milk, and no sugar. I did buy some artificial sweetener. I read a really good article about ordering skinny at Starbucks.

I also attempted to buy healthy food, but all of it, that isn't fruit flavored, has chocolate. I ended up make Energy Bites by Smashed Peas and Carrots. I used butterscotch chips instead of chocolate, but since I've been eating less sugar they seem VERY sweet. Next time I think I'll go without any baking chips. My brother and boyfriend both really liked them. I'll be making more VERY soon.

9) I think I only have one ufo (unfinished object), but last night I started a sweater. That is a step in the wrong direction.

My latest iPhone game addiction is DragonVale!

It's a free iPhone game. This game is a tycoon style game. The 'attractions' raise the money.

This is what mine looks like
You can see your level, money, gems, and treats across the top. Then on the side there are goal and how many people are in your park. On the bottom you can adjust your options, give friends free gifts and see their parks, or go to the market.

Here is the market and the different things you can buy in it. The graphics are pretty interesting.

These are your 3 basic dragons.

When you click on your dragon, you can see some info, a picture, the rate, and the habitats it could live in.

As you level up your dragon by feeding it treats it will make you more money.

Then there are muti-type dragons. You can pay gems for them.

Gems are pricey.

Or you can buy a breading cave and have your basic dragons make the more complex ones.

Your dragons will need a place to live so you need to buy a matching habitat for them. Different habitats can hold different amount of dragons.

Then to make your park more attractive you can add decorations.

Once you run out of room, you can buy a whole different island for even more dragons!
