Now that Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises is out on Blu-ray and DVD (in more formats than you can shake a stick at), collaborators who worked with Nolan on the whole of the trilogy have been coming out of the woodwork to talk about the various processes that went into creating what many consider to be the greatest superhero trilogy of all time.

Everyone, from composer Hans Zimmer to cinematographer Wally Pfister, has opened up about melding minds with Nolan. Now editor Lee Smith, who entered the world back with Batman Begins, has shared his insights with FlickeringMyth.com about joining Nolan’s team after working on Master & Commander: The Far Side of the World. That movie would earn Smith his first Oscar nomination, and his second came from The Dark Knight. Basically, Smith was Nolan’s right-hand man, and the insights he contributes in the lengthy article about the influences that went into the creation of Gotham are priceless.

This one, however, I haven’t heard before. While some say Inception -- and, specifically, the hallway fight scene – influenced the plane-hijacking scene at the start of The Dark Knight Rises, it turns out that a different movie, one that never saw the light of day, influenced how Nolan treated Bruce Wayne in the final Batman movie. Smith says that the concept of Wayne as a billionaire recluse drew from a Howard Highes biopic that Nolan wanted to do, but ultimately let slide. Now I want to scan the background of those opening scenes in Rises to see if Wayne keeps any bottles of urine next to the safe with his late mom’s pearls.

A Psychotik Review: The Amazing Spiderman

I think it goes without saying, I need to be a little less wordy with my movie reviews. So hopefully, for the last time, I’ll be changing up the format a bit. That being said, let’s talk plot. The Amazing Spiderman is advertised as the untold story. You have the basic plot of Peter Parker gets powers from a special spider (still genetically engineered, face it we know radioactive won’t do that stuff!) A bad decision by Peter, leads to Uncle Ben’s untimely death. And Parker learns with great power, comes great responsibility. It has all of that…and more! First off, we have a change in love interest. That’s right guys and ghouls, no Mary Jane Watson this time round. This time we have the beautiful Gwen Stacy (Played by the very pretty Emma Stone). I should have probably mentioned first the fact we have a plot with Peters Parents (this is where the untold story comes in.) Apparently, Mr. Parker was one of the best genetic scientists at Oscorp (Yes, Oscorp plays the role it’s supposed to as a big bad mean corporation). Dr. Parker and Dr. Curt Connors were apparently working on splicing animal genes with human genes to cure different ailments. Something happens, and Peters Mom and Dad have to leave in a hurry. Flash forward a couple of years and Peter finds his Dad’s hidden documents. This prompts him to sneak into Oscorp, which prompts him to sneak into a restricted area full of genetically engineered spiders…which get’s him bit (we all know the basics of what happens) Moving on, Peter impresses Dr. Connors by using his Dad’s formula to finish what he’s working on. Of course as you know, comic book rules state something must go wrong….and it does and Connors becomes the lizard. Really, you should watch the movie from here, because I don’t want to ruin it!

Pros:

What did I like? A lot really! The casting was..eh eh hmm…Amazing. Andrew Garfeild makes a perfect Spiderman. He has the charisma, the attitude, and a certain gusto that makes him leaps, bounds, and web-slings above Tobey Maguire. Emma Stone plays a much better love interest as Gwen Stacey than Kirsten Dunst. Sally Feild as Aunt May is a little awkward at first, but she grows on you. Martain Sheen gives a new level of depth to Uncle Ben. You don’t just get to see good ol’ Uncle Ben, you get to see a more realistic side of him. He’s not this glorified father figure, you see some flaws in him…it’s more grounding. I don’t know where to start with Rhys Ifans as Dr. Connors. Couldn’t picture a better person in the role.

The way that they handle Spiderman in general is a big plus. Finally, we have a Spiderman that offers the quips and one liners we all love. That was always something that killed me with the Rami films. The suit takes a little getting used to. I can tell you the one thing that irks me most about it they fix in the game. A simple addition of a red utility belt ties the whole thing together. The thing I love most about the movie that i didn’t think I was going to is the Web-Slingers. Yes, the film actually acknowledges the fact Peter is smart and likes to invent things. Watch in one scene where you can see a door lock invention in his room. Although he doesn’t create the stuff that is turned into web (that’s actually a Oscorp invention. Little pills that contain liquid steel that can be turned into a cable). But, he does create the device that spins it into webbing. Last thing I’ll mention…his super strength. Most people may not realize this, but Spiderman is pretty freakin’ strong…this time it shows and manages to add some rather humorous moments.

Last but not least. The Stan Lee cameo. I’m not going into much detail, all I will tell you is when you see it you will shit awesome bricks…and laugh for days on end. Best one…ever!

Cons:

As far as things I didn’t like, the list isn’t that long. The only things I can mention is one scene at the end and how the lizard looked. I just feel he could have looked a little better, maybe a little more sinister looking. I mean he was ok, but still out of all of the incarnations of the lizard, he could have been better. The scene at the end I’m talking about is…eh hmm…wait a minuet…

SPOILER ALERT

The scene where Gwen Stacy is trying to create the antidote for the Lizard…virus? Either way, she is making the antidote and trying to keep Lizard out of the lab. In a last-ditch effort she pulls the trigger for the Halon Gas System. She then proceeds to run through the gas to the other end of the room…effortlessly…and hide in a closet. Well it was all for not, as the system failed to deter the Connors in any way. My Problem? Halon Gas removes all of the oxygen from the area, in this case the room, to extinguish fires in a lab. It’s really the best way to kill a chemical fire. In no way would she or Connors…two oxygen dependent organisms…be able to survive the room without the aid of a gas mask. Now I could be wrong, it could have been some other system…but to the best of my knowledge, systems like this are always halon…and that is what it looks like. If I’m wrong correct me.

Well, I’m going to stop here with my verdict. The Amazing Spiderman gets5 out 5 Top Hats. I really thought I was going to hate this one. I really thought it was going to stink. Thank you for proving me wrong…an epic Spiderman movie is possible. Hat’s off Darlings…

Since the debut of Resident Evil in 2002, the four part film series (loosely) based on Capcom’s survival horror video games has secured almost $650 million in global box office ticket sales. Certain fans of the Resident Evil games still criticize the big screen adaptations for being overblown and hollow action flicks that bypass canon storylines in favor of convoluted Alice (Milla Jovovich)-centric film plots; however, audiences still turn out in droves for director Paul W.S. Anderson’s over-the-top take on the franchise.

In fact, each subsequent Resident Evil film has delivered a higher box office gross than the one before – with Anderson’s return to the franchise director’s chair in part 4, Resident Evil: Afterlife, nearly doubling the global haul of part 3, Resident Evil: Extinction. Anderson is now set to deliver Resident Evil: Retribution, another in-your-face 3D action experience that, this time, brings back a number of familiar faces from prior installments, as well as new fan favorite characters from the game series.

As a result, does Retribution finally deliver a Resident Evil film that both fans of the games and movies will both enjoy?

Unfortunately, despite the film’s closer adherence to the franchise canon, Resident Evil: Retribution isn’t likely to win over any converts that had previously passed on prior entries in the series – as in general, its just another round of the convoluted storytelling and eye-popping action combo that Anderson has relied on since the first installment in the series. Similarly, the 3D will only be pleasing to moviegoers who judge a 3D experience based on the number of objects that fly out of the screen. Subtlety has never been the director’s strong suit, and once again, nearly every story beat, character moment, and action set piece leaves little to the imagination or mind. That said, there are enough weird creatures, zombie hordes, and brutal kills to satiate some action fans – especially moviegoers who have enjoyed earlier Resident Evil films.

Johann Urb joins Milla Jovovich and Boris Kodjoe for ‘Retribution.’

The Resident Evil: Retribution story picks up (literally) where the last film left off: Alice (Jovovich) and her allies are stranded on the Arcadia tanker with an Umbrella strike force ready to attack. After an explosive shootout, Alice is taken hostage by the Umbrella Corporation and moved to a secret facility – where she is interrogated by her former friend Jill Valentine (Sienna Guillory), who is under the control of anti-humanity super computer, The Red Queen. In order to rescue Alice, who holds the key to a powerful weapon, Ada Wong (Bingbing Li), Leon S. Kennedy (Johann Urb), Barry Burton (Kevin Durand), and returning partner-in-zombie killing Luther West (Boris Kodjoe) lead a strike on the Umbrella facility – fighting through a number of “biohazards” (creatures and people that have been mutated by T-Virus and Las Plagas infections). However, as the team moves from one branch of the facility to the next, new horrors and even some long-awaited answers are unearthed.
While the movie does implement characters that are familiar to gaming fans, any new additions are merely cosmetic as Anderson makes no efforts to adhere to character backstories from the larger franchise canon. The patched in game characters work only as nods to longtime fans, and in some cases, actually work against the director’s intended efforts – as certain gamers will no doubt find their inclusion distracting instead of satisfying. Despite semi-admirable efforts, the series is so far removed from the game mythology that it would be better if Anderson simply stuck to his vision – instead of trying for a hollow compromise.
Prior installments didn’t feature particularly sharp stories, but the narrative this round is so convoluted that there are two separate expository scenes where a character essentially explains: a) the plot of the previous films and b) the overarching plot of the current film viewers are in the process of watching. While the earlier Resident Evil chapters were brainless but forgivable action experiences, Retribution buckles entirely under the weight of all the plot threads that Anderson and the other Resident Evil directors have introduced over the course of a decade (and five feature films). At one point the movies worked as campy popcorn flicks with enjoyable jump scares and slick (albeit cheesy) action beats, but Anderson’s attempt to weave together a compelling overarching drama out of the franchise’s copious dangling threads makes all the long-standing problems difficult to ignore. On top of downright stilted performances from most of the cast (as well as laughable vocal dubbing) Retribution is chock-full of ridiculous plot holes, hamfisted melodrama, and loads of narrative backtracking.

Milla Jovovich returns as Alice in ‘Resident Evil: Retribution’

Of course, many moviegoers are going to see Retribution for the purpose of watching Jovovich snap necks and shoot creatures while dressed in skin tight leather and platform boots. For viewers who can forgive all of the film’s shortcomings, and really only care about the hyper-stylized action beats, there are definitely a few redeeming moments. None of these scenes are especially memorable and several are anticlimactic (resolved entirely too quickly) but, as Alice and Co. plow through one biohazard after another, Retribution does manage to deliver occasionally intriguing combat. That said, for most moviegoers, the explosions are not likely worth stumbling through the overly complicated as well as underwhelming Retribution plot points.
As indicated earlier, the 3D in Retribution is unapologetic in its gimmickry – reserved almost entirely for bullets, axes, knives, rockets, blood, and other projectiles to fly out of the screen. It’s hard to recommend that anyone who enjoys more subtle (and arguably inventive) uses of the format pay the 3D upcharge; however, so many of the action sequences are centered around the 3D ploys that it could be even more distracting to see the film in 2D and not experience the overly-obvious third dimension pandering.
Resident Evil: Retribution is style-over-substance in every possible definition of the concept. The plot only serves as an excuse to move the characters quite literally from one action “sequence” to the next, and the 3D is uncomfortable, off-putting, and (worst of all) will likely draw moviegoers out of the onscreen action. A number of later developments clearly show that Anderson avoided emotional character moments in favor of suicidal “bad-assery” at every single turn. However, in a time when amateur filmmakers can throw together cool action videos with blockbuster CGI special effects in their home office, context and competent storytelling are more important than ever. If Anderson doesn’t care enough about his characters and story to make them anything but emotionless fighting and shooting machines, why should audiences care to sign up for further entries in his Resident Evil vision?

What we get instead is a slice of popcorn summer fun from director Peter Berg (Hancock, The Kingdom); a movie that unabashedly celebrates the valor of the men and women of the armed forces.
The story revolves around Alex Hopper (John Carter star Taylor Kitsch), a smart, capable, and totally reckless young man who is chaperoned by his older brother and guardian, Navy Commander Stone Hopper (Alexander Skarsgård). One faithful night, while celebrating his birthday in a local bar, Alex meets Sam (Brooklyn Decker), a drop-dead gorgeous girl who wants nothing more than a chicken burrito to fill her stomach. In typical Alex fashion, young Hopper goes to inspired (and reckless) lengths to obtain said burrito; the act of chivalry gets him the girl, but also leaves him facing severe legal consequences. Fed up with caring for an out of control man-child, Stone signs Alex up to join him in the Navy.

The story starts as a man who calls himself "Ryder," (John Travolta) leads a band of thugs as they highjack a subway train and MTA dispatcher Walter Garber (Denzel Washington) who is Reluctantly forced to be the Lead negotiator.

This Film is a remake of a 1974 movie of the same name and reworked to meet a new audience. With modern dialog and cell phones, laptop computers and of course the fact that 911 effects the city still, this film was a really fast pace based roughly on the old plot. There are some wild scenes in this movie of New York City as the Mayor, (James Gandolfini) agrees to pay a $10 million ransom and they try to get the money across the city to the subway station. If nothing else is worth the price of admission to see James Gandolfini, Tony Soprano as mayor of New York it’s so cool. Denzel Washington and John Travolta work wel together and their voices are what id cool to have to big name actors in a dialog driven story about two characters that interact over a radio on the subway car. This film was made for a younger audience and I think that those are ones that do go to the movies regularly.

I think my fellow Critics just didn’t get that part of the puzzle, that this film was made with the 17-27ish age group in mind, so it’s fast cuts and rough, realistic dialog. What would a career family man with a Wife and kids and an ex-con straight out of prison talk like, what would the banter be? I think the writers nailed it dead on and the two main actors and Gandolfini included deliver the lines flawlessly. Also, the fact that this film has scenes filmed on the streets of New York to would in my opinion must have been a logistical nightmare and an undertaking that is in itself a commendable feat. This film also has some great editing and that’s often overlooked, editor Chris Lebenzon stitches together a compelling series of images that suck you in, and work well with the Music by Harry Gregson-Williams. This is a good film, not a great film and it overcomes a story that is antiquated, and turns it into a new and improved version that is engaging to watch.

The second Harry Potter film is better than the first, not because it is true to the book's story, but because it is true to the book's atmosphere.

The first Harry Potter movie was very good, but it stayed so close to the book that it spread itself too thin trying to get at every single detail. This adaptation of Joanne Rowling's second book (which I think is the weakest among the entire series) does indeed have all the good parts but focuses primarily on the main storyline. The film skips a lot of the background details, which makes for effective pacing, while taking liberties with the story to fit the big screen.

Here Harry Potter (Daniel Radcliff) and his friends, Ron (Rupert Grint) and Hermione (Emma Watson) once again encounter Voldemort (Christian Coulson) as a memory that has the power to become real. Voldemort opens the Chamber of Secrets freeing a fearsome Basilisk, an Alien-like snake that can kill with a glance. The snake's attacks threaten to close down Hogwarts School and Harry must stop them or be sent home to live with his foster parents (you can understand his motivation when you meet them at the introduction of every book/film).

The film is darker than the first, with scenes that are definitely creepy: Harry's encounter with a strange hand in Diagon Alley, Ron and Harry getting stuck in a willow tree that attacks them with its branches, Harry and Ron escaping from the giant spiders, and Harry's final battle with the Basilisk. There are also some Orwellian themes touched upon here, including Dobby the Elf's masochism and slavery, the ideal of some of the "Purebloods" to cleanse Hogwarts of the "Mudbloods".

The familiar high-profile cast do a fine job, with the newcomers, Kenneth Branagh as the pompous (and hilarious) new Dark Arts teacher Gilderoy Lockhart, and Jason Isaacs as an evil-oozing Lucius Malfoy, particularly standing out. While the child actors carry their roles well, some of them do tend to overact. The score does a great highlighting the suspense, which there exists a lot of.

The set design and accompanying cinematography and production deserves a paragraph of its own. The integration of computer generated images and the actors is very seamless. The Hogwarts school, the surrounding countryside, and the brief Quidditch match are all rendered with amazing reality.

If the first film was the setup, this one's definitely the payoff. Even though I know what happens next, I can't wait to see it.(SOURCES)
