Hi, Do you ever watch that show called "The Middle" on ABC?

It's my favorite show and the Mother's Day episode was hilarious!

Here is a picture of the mom (Frankie) opening up her Mother's Day gift, thinking that her family remembered all of the hints she dropped them about what gift she wanted.

And here is the disaster gift she actually got, hideous yellow pants! (non-returnable, because they were on sale too.)

So for Mother's Day, I received this cleverly crafted pair of yellow paper pants taped to some junior mints and some faux yellow flowers from my foster daughter, too funny!

And hubby came through with some beautiful potted climbing hydrangeas.....

And the most delicious candy I've ever tried! What nice guy, he did good!

Being a foster mom has been a big, huge blessing in my life.

Hi Everyone!

If you saw my blog last MM, I showed two sets of plain napkin rings I received from Freecycle.org. I made over one set last week and this week I'm showing you what I did with the other set.

I chalkboard painted them so that they can serve double duty as place cards or just be decorated for a theme like I did above.

So, here's another Shabby Coastal tablescape for you.

I love using burlap as a table cloth. My chair covers are in burlap too.

The charcoal napkins really help with the chalkboard theme. I wasn't even planning on using them. I found them while looking for some other napkins.

Everything else, I already had.

I love finding new ways to decorate without buying anything, don't you?

Shabby Coastal Living.....what is it?

It's a term I came up with to describe my particular decorating style. At least I think that I came up with it. I've never heard of it before.

I'm not saying I'm the only person who decorates this way. I'm just saying that I think it needs it's own style name.

I love coastal decorating, but not all coastal decorating. There are many variations; tropical, nautical, 60's retro, modern, etc.
And I like them but.......

I love the white cottage, vintage look with a little Pottery Barn on the side.

I like the feeling I get when I think of my Grandmother's little white, vintage beach house in Newport Beach, Ca growing up.

I try to instill that feeling in my home decor.

It's a mix of the things I love now and from the past.

My Grandma was a hardcore thrift store/yard sale ~~junkie~~ lover.

Her home was a mixture of antiques and coastal treasures. This was in the 1960's, she was ahead of her time!

I loved her vintage kitchen with mismatched vintage plates and silverware.

I liked the way she lived, loving simple things, that were better and prettier than new things that cost more. She was smart.

Every time I collect mismatched silverware from the swap-meet, I think of her and her adorable little beach house.

Of course, My Grandma wouldn't have added Pottery Barn to her decor. I grew up in a more modern styled home. So I also love a little trendiness.

How do I to stay frugal and have PB goodies?

My little secret is that I get free PB irregulars from being an auxiliary foster thrift store member. I pay a 75$ membership a

year (6 dollars a month!)And go and shop for "free" stuff once a month. Grandma would have approved of that!

Shabby Coastal Living is all about frugality, without suffering on quality, style or need.

You can attain the same look that some people pay big money for, for a fraction of the cost.

Of course you can apply that to any anything you do.

A lot of other things, as I've said before, come from Freecyle.org. My Grandma would have loved freecycle.

This tablescape was actually inspired by two sets of free napkin rings I received from freecycle.

All I did was hot glue shells I already had to the white plastic rings.

This weeks MM is dedicated to the families and victims of the Boston Marathon. I'm amazed by the enormously great job the police did in finding out who did this and capturing the remaining terrorist so fast. I would also like to acknowledge the medical and other people who helped the injured immediately following the bombing. I pray for the Lord's comfort to all who were affected by this very sad incident.

Hi, How's your Spring coming along? I can't believe it's already April! Time flies.

I decided to make a Spring tablescape this week.

I found the aqua flower plates at GW years ago.

I love mixing textures.

I made these daisy napkin rings a while ago. Super easy and inexpensive.

I used wicker ribbon, dollar store flowers and hot glue.

What Spring table would be complete without a few feathered friends?

The bird salt/pepper shakers are from the dollar store.

The bird votives are from the dollar store too.

I removed the top of my topiary's and let the birds nest on the moss.

So far, I'm really liking these little buckets because they're so versatile.

Hi! How's your weekend going? Mine has been nice and quiet. My foster daughter and I made some beaded bracelets last night.

These first two are hers. She did a really good job, huh? I just brought out all of my beads and these were the ones she chose.

I love to bead, it feels very therapeutic.

These are all simple stretch bracelets.

Even this one with the clasp, is a stretch bracelet

It was really nice to spend this time with my daughter, we always have fun making things. I think I'll plan on crafting a lot this Summer.

Hi Everybody! How was your Easter? I hope it was a blessed one!

This year for Easter, instead of going to our regular Calvary Chapel church, we went to the church we were married in.
This is Calvary Chapel in Costa Mesa, CA. AKA "Big Calvary". It was a wonderful and very blessed time.

They had a new rock waterfall and three wooden crosses in the courtyard.

There was a beautiful Easter Lily garden planted at the foot of the crosses.

Afterward, we drove down to the beach and stopped in at the Sands Hotel. The lobby always has a miniature photo gallery featuring different artists.

Do you like this picture made out of repurposed wet suits? Or I guess it's a wet suit quilt?

The stairway has this very cool giant seaweed wall paper.

Upstairs, the seating looks like you're at some one's beach house.

Then we headed down to the pier to take some more pictures and walk on the sand.

We always walk under the pier to get to the water, because it's nice and shady.

And during the Summer, we sit under the pier when it's too hot at the beach. It's nice and cool!

As you can see, the weather was just beautiful.

I threw together a little coastal Easter mantel for you on

"Old Rusty".

These are some coastal inspired Easter eggs I made a few years ago, using paper napkins and glue.

Do you like my little bottle brush critters?

I've seen them in the PB catalogs, but I found all of mine at GW.

The bottle brush duck family was part of a Christmas wreath straight out the 80's. I freed them from their red felt hats and dusty faux greenery.

Hi Everyone! St. Patrick's Day is the very last major holiday of the Winter season, but it always feels like a Spring holiday to me, because the flowering trees are always in bloom by then.

Here's a wee bit of an Irish breakfast buffet vignette for your viewing pleasure......Do you like the blue jug with shamrock and says "Good Luck"? It's really old and used to belong to my Grandma.

I found this cute Irish soda bread at TJ's, I'll let let you know how it is.

These were my mom's Spring fairy's who moonlight every year for me as leprechaun's.

Lemon Tart

I'm linking this week with Flaunt it Friday at Chic On A Shoestring and

Foodie Friday ar Rattlebridge Farm

Ingredients

3/8 cup butter

1/4 cup lemon juice

1 tablespoon frated lemon zest

1/4 cup confectioners' sugar

1 cup all-purpose flour
1 cup white sugar

3 eggs

3 tablespoons all-purpose flour

2 tablespoons confectioners sugar for dusting

Directions

1. preheat oven to 350 degrees.

2.Process butter, 1/4 cup confectioners' sugar and 1 cup of flour in food processor for 10 seconds, or blend with pastry blender. Pat dough evenly into 9 inch round tart or pie plate.

3. Bake 12-15 minutes, until hot and golden brown.

4. Combine eggs, white sugar, lemon zest, lemon juice and 3 tablespoons of flour and mix until smooth; pour mixture over hot crust.

5. Bake 15-20 minutes more, until firm. Cool completely. Dust with powdered sugar.

I saw a Spring wreath like this at Walmart and decided to make one myself.

All you need is a wreath, some burlap, long enough to go around your wreath and wide enough to make pleats. And some wire and wire cutters.

Fold the burlap like you would to make a paper fan and iron each pleat.

Attach it to the wreath with the wire.The back side won't look very pretty, but it doesn't matter.

Flip your wreath over and arrange and fluff your pleats.

Then have fun adding your decorations I found this birds nest at the 99 cent store.

I cut myself a little paper white bouquet from our front yard.

These sweet little moss bunny's were 2 for 1 at the 99 cent store. I decided to make them into topiary's. I also got the green mercury glass votives from there.

I made a little Easter banner too. It's hard to see, but I used silver glitter stickers for the letter's

I've been loving all of the Spring, Easter and St. Pat's decor. Everything is really close together this year, huh? I love it all though, my favorite season is Spring, the weather is perfect before the long hot Summertime. Summer weather here lasts until October or November, sometimes longer! Our foster daughter recently had a birthday and I had a lot of fun decorating for it!

She turned 15 and I wanted to do something special. I used a lot of book pages and sheet music.

I hung paper flowers made out of vintage clothes patterns.

I used black and white/vintage white and a little pale pink.

I made a banner from gift wrap and book pages.

This is my all purpose black vinyl banner I reuse over and over again. I use removal stickers or taped on paper.

How to enjoy a bouquet of flowers...longer.

I usually use flowers from my yard as bouquets. But sometimes it's nice to receive a lovely bunch of store bought flowers from your sweetie. I check them daily, trimming the bottom of the stems, discarding dead pieces, changing both the water and the container. Oh, and making sure to trim away any leaves below the water line, to keep the water from turning green.

I made three smaller bouquets from one. An all green one, for the living room.

One with the fragrant pink flowers.........smells soo good! This one is for my bedroom.

and a cutesie little all white one, for the kitchen window.
