Guide

A confession: Valentine's Day is usually not a very romantic occasion in our household. This is because it generally falls during Fashion Week, so by the time I get home, I'm exhausted (hey, running all over the city and looking at clothes all day is hard work!) and not exactly in the mood for love. Not to mention, MW has a particular disdain for so-called Hallmark holidays. That said, Valentine's Day is still a good excuse to treat yourself to something sexy. Here are some of my current objects de desire, perfect for spicing things up anytime.

Top row:
Knowing Alexander Wang, these fur-trimmed sandals were probably meant to subvert the stereotypical froufrou bedroom slipper, but the combination of the extra-high heel and exaggerated pouf of fur just makes them extra sexy to me. Alexander Wang Chantal Sandals, $398

This Kiki de Montparnasse necklace has an, ahem, added feature that just might come in handy when you least expect it. Or when you do. Kiki de Montparnasse Cigar Pocket Vibrator, $375

Mary Green makes all manner of cheeky eye masks (I have a blogger-appropriate one that says "I'd rather sleep than tweet"), but this "Never enough" one carries a fun double entendre. Because who ever gets enough...sleep? Mary Green Never Enough Embroidered Sleep Mask, $27

Middle row:
There's lingerie that serves a more, shall we say, practical purpose, and then there's lingerie that's suited for one role only. Teddies tend to fall into the latter category, but I love how this Brulee teddy somehow combines a minimal, sophisticated look with a more playful quality. Brulee Vamp Ava Teddy, $158

Champagne, particularly the rosé variety, is one of my favorite things to drink—it tastes good, it's bubbly, and you always look chic holding a flute of it. There's also something to be said for its ability to grease the wheels, so to speak. Taittinger Brut Prestige Rosé Nv, £57

What goes best with Champagne? Chocolate champagne truffles, of course!
La Maison du Chocolat Champagne Truffles, $55

Bottom row:
As a perfume junkie, I have scents for pretty much every mood and/or occasion. For seduction, one of my favorites is L'Agent Provocateur's namesake scent. I once read a review that referred to its essence as "dirty knickers," and before you get grossed out, let me just say that that's a good thing. Trust me.
Agent Provocateur eau de parfum, $60

Adam and Eve, apples, tree of knowledge, serpents, etc. This rose-gold Stella & Dot Sidewinder ring is a little bit dangerous, in a biblical sense. Stella & Dot Sidewinder Ring, $69

Probably one of my favorite gifts here, these Kiki de Montparnasse panties look like days-of-the-week undies, but upon closer look, say things ranging from "aime-moi" to "mange-moi." Since these are meant to be French lessons, I'll let you figure out their meaning on your own. Kiki de Montparnasse French Lesson Panty Set, $295

While feathers may not be treasured as dearly as the more popular animal-inspired embellishment, faux fur, this holiday season, feather details are having a serious moment. Platform pumps and strappy heels are getting fancied up with feathers of all kinds, from dramatic statement-making peacock to wispy bursts of color and texture that are sure to steal the show at your next holiday cocktail party. Who cares if you have nothing to wear - bust out your tried and true little black dress and slip on a pair of these festive feathered heels and you've got yourself a look-at-me new look that's right on-trend, no matter how many times you've recycled the same dress! If a lofty price tag doesn't make you cringe, you must take a look at these fierce suede heels from Chiara Ferragni, but if you're on a more modest budget (with just the slightest wiggle room for splurging), these Kate Spade pom-pom heels have loads of character! Seeking a pop of color? Look no further than these Enzo Angiolini Thaddea ankle-strap pumps, or these sexy purple platforms from Nine West!
The collection of clothes, bags, and scarves retails for $19.99 to $59.99 and hits stores February 5th. Here are some of my favorites.

Blush blouse ($34.99), lace-print skirt ($29.99), lace clutch ($29.99)

Pleated top ($32.99), pleated skirt ($29.99), lace clutch ($29.99)
No word on pricing or exact dates, but it hits stores sometime in March. Check out R29's rather extensive slideshow for a good preview of the nautical-flavored looks, like this cute dress.

For the Zac Posen fans out there, he's designing a special line of 12 dresses exclusively for Lord & Taylor under his Z Spoke label. The collection will hit stores in April and will retail for $149-$199, less than half of what a typical Z Spoke dress usually goes for. No photos (nor exact dates) available yet, but I will post them as soon as I have them.

Prices range from 55 Euros ($72) for a makeup case to 350 Euros ($456) for a structured tote; the signature Le Pliage bags run 95-160 Euros ($124-$208).

For one, it's much more affordable, particularly during its semiannual 30-40-50 sales (which last week hit 50% off, in case you were wondering). For another, it has all the cool designers you want—Alexander Wang, Cheap Monday, MM6—plus a bunch of new ones you haven't heard of yet, as well as a very cool in-house label. Even better, starting last Friday, Oak unveiled a secret sample sale in the basement of its Bond Street store, featuring true samples, accessories from photo shoots, and other treasures unearthed in storage. Shh, don't tell the hipsters. Ongoing; 28 Bond St. (Bowery & Lafayette Sts.), basement.

For those of you not in NYC, you can still shop the 30-40-50 sale online.

Although it's safe for us shopping addicts to officially start welcoming spring trends, unfortunately the weather doesn't often know how to keep up with our fashion-forward tastes. In other words, let's be honest with ourselves - it's still freakin' cold out, so you shouldn't feel like you're "out of season" for equipping yourself with some cold-weather must-haves you can actually enjoy now! One of my favorite wintry accessories this season has definitely been the convertible mitten. Unlike fingerless gloves, convertible mittens help you get the best of both worlds by giving you wiggle room to text, but also providing the option to take cover with a cute buttoned mitten extension for extra-chilly days. Sure, they're not the most streamlined or sleek of glove styles, but they're pretty awesome for multi-taskers like me who love to bundle up but also value freedom to carry out basic functions (like operating a touch screen)!
Tooshie bikini" />
Object of Desire: A.P.C Tooshie scarf-tie bikini

When I was a teenager, I thought I was fat. Part of this was due to the usual adolescent insecurity, and part was due to the fact that I danced, but even when you weigh 15 or 20 pounds more than the teeny-tiny ballerinas in your company, you feel like an utter cow in comparison. The thing was, I wasn't fat. At all. But it took me a very long time to shake that notion. As in, most of my twenties, and maybe a little of my thirties. So a few years ago, I really started taking care of my body—a big component of this was starting Core Fusion at Exhale, which to this day is the one type of exercise (aside from dance) that I actually like doing. And at some point I realized that not only I am still not fat, I wasted years of my life thinking I was. If I could go back in time, I would tell my 16-year-old self to show more skin, be more confident, wear things that are shorter, tighter, sexier. In other words, dress like teenagers do now!

So while I spent much of my life covering up in tankinis, boy shorts, and other camouflage-oriented swimwear, I've discovered in the last few years that I can wear bikinis. And while the styles I like would probably be considered tame in, say, Brazil, I've found that traditional triangle tops and side-tie bottoms look best on me—and I would venture that with their adjustable, customizable construction, they'd look good on a lot of people, perhaps testament to their enduring popularity. Now, considering how little fabric is involved in bikinis, people often balk at their high price tags, but when you are practically almost naked to the world, you want those tiny triangles of Lycra to be as well constructed as possible, so as to best support and flatter your assets. And, believe me, there is a lot of construction and refinement of fit that goes into a swimsuit. My favorite suits, by Vix, tend to run close to $200, for example, but I firmly believe that when it comes to swimwear, you get what you pay for. (And if you take care of it properly, it can last for several years, if not more.)

MW and I are planning a Caribbean spring break of sorts, which has me eager to replace several of the older styles in my arsenal. The first one that caught my eye this season is this soothing, tie-dyed beauty from a collaboration between A.P.C. and Tooshie, which is a French swimwear label not widely available here. There are 11 pieces in the collection, including some one-pieces and some swim trunks for the guys, but the traditional bikini is my favorite. It's simple, and yet the bottoms are slightly wider on the sides and thus a bit more forgiving than the traditional style. I look at it and just think summer. The stumbling block, however, is the price, which is a bit outside of my swimsuit comfort zone and hence why this qualifies as an object of desire. Then again, I think of all the years I wasted covering myself up on the beach, so maybe it's worth it, to make up for all that lost time. And considering it's only a matter of time before things start sagging and drooping, perhaps there's no time like the present. Carpe diem! Which, in my book, is Latin for "Wear a bikini!"

Saks.com marked them down the day after Christmas, but, alas, by the time I got to them, only size 10 was left (and those are long gone now). After I finished mending my broken heart, I came across the next best thing. They might not be blue velvet, but the metallic lizard version is the silver, er, gold lining in the cloud. They are still available on Loeffler Randall's website and, even better, are on sale, although still on the pricey side, at $313. Still, have you seen a pair of shoes that so deftly toe the line between glamorous and edgy? And in spite of the 105mm heel (about 4 inches), I'll bet that, like every other pair of Loeffler Randall shoes I own, they're quite comfortable. While I'm going to keep my eyes peeled for another markdown, if these babies are still around by my birthday, I think I might have found my present to myself.

I'm just getting to the age where my time is worth more than my money. An exception: Shopping the sales just seems so much easier on the Internet--there are no crowds, no craziness, and no sad, dirty clothes to weed through. Not to mention it's easier to find what you're looking for. In other words, it's official: I'm turning into my mother. Next stop, Chico's.

Anyway, just because you can't deal with clearance racks doesn't mean you can't score some amazing deals this time of year. One of my favorite places to bargain-shop on the Internet is Yoox.com, which has been one of my go-to sites for as long as I can remember. The experience is great, it's easy to narrow down sizes, items, and designers, and it's amazing what you can find. While most retailers tend to hold onto items only for a season or two, Yoox is like a veritable archive of designers' recent collections, and whenever I'm looking for a specific item that I missed several seasons ago, it's usually the first place I go. Not to mention, the longer something has been on the site, the cheaper it gets. Here are some of the things I've been stalking, ranging from a $35 ADAM skirt to a $275 Be&D bag (which, by the way, was going for $375 at their most recent sample sale). With Yoox, who needs end-of-season clearance sales?

But as for masstige collections I'm really, truly excited for, H&M unveiled yet another powerhouse collaboration with Marni, due in stores March 8th. To add another layer of awesomeness, Sofia Coppola will direct the ads. I am particularly excited because March 8th is a Thursday, meaning (hopefully) people won't be camping out overnight for a chance at the goods, and thus I might actually be able to purchase something. I, of course, will share more photos as they're available.

And speaking of H&M, remember the Versace collection last November? Of course you do. Well, there's a part two of sorts, an online-exclusive resort collection due January 19th. The catch? H&M doesn't have e-commerce in the U.S. yet, so consider yourselves lucky, European readers! Fashionista has a preview of the entire collection, should you want to lust over it from afar.

With all the gift guides and fall shopping guides, I know I've been low on shoe posts lately, but hopefully this will make up for it. So, I've been obsessed with Diane von Furstenberg's Penn fringe boots ever since they came down the runway last February. They're in line with that whole urban-bohemian Isabel Marant vibe, and they look like something Kate Moss would wear (an instant win in my book). And in spite of the fact that they're $650, these boots are sold out nearly everywhere (Shopbop being the one exception, although they're out of my size in black). Of course, this makes me want them even more. Desperate, I started Googling black suede fringe boots and lo and behold, I found this very similar pair by Ecote at Urban Outfitters on sale for $34.99. That's right, $34.99. They are real, actual suede, and while the fringe isn't nearly as thick as the DVF version, I feel like at that price, you really have no cause for complaint. They even get bonus points in my book for the very tolerable 2.5-inch heel (as opposed to DVF's 3.75"). If there were ever a no-brainer featured in this category, I think these boots would be it. Seriously, go buy yourself a pair—they're Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, and Happy New Year rolled all into one! And on that note, see you next year!

I remember when puffer vests were really big in my middle school years. I wore those things like they were going out of style... probably because they were. But like most fads, what once was old is new yet again, and sure enough - fifteen years later - the puffer vest has re-emerged has a must-have in the fashion world as well as the snowboarding slopes. These modern takes on the sporty vest fit so seamlessly with our winter wardrobe because they have that utilitarian vibe without being overly functional. Don't get me wrong - these down-stuffed little numbers are definitely cozy, but with a more lightweight feel comes easier layering potential, and more fashion freedom to incorporate these vests into your outfit without overpowering the rest of your look. After all, if you've ever owned a puffy coat or vest, you know how easy it can be to drown in all the comfy puffiness... or look like an astronaut, thanks to the metallic silver vest my mom made rock in 5th grade. So my only advice is to be mindful of bulk when it comes to shopping for the perfect warm layering piece for winter!
Yes, I shop for myself during the holidays, but considering the amazing sample sales and deals out there this time of year, can you blame me? That said, I don't buy myself everything I want—after all, I need to save some things for this post! So here's what's on my holiday wish list (heavy emphasis on wish).

Top row:
I have what I call a Fashion Holy Grail list, and one of the key items on it is a Rick Owens shearling jacket, just like this one. It's more than my mortgage payment, but, oh, what a beauty. Rick Owens biker jacket, $3,200

Fact: I love me some mollusks. This octopus diptych was for sale on One King's Lane a few weeks ago, and although I missed it, I'm keeping an eye out should it ever reappear—it would be perfect for above my bed. Silver-Framed Blue Octopus Diptych

A year ago, I sniffed the special-edition Dior J'adore L'Or then promptly forgot about it until I recently smelled it again in a duty-free shop...and fell in love all over again. Dior J' Adore L'Or Essence De Parfum, $110

Middle row:
This pink silver ring looks pretty and delicate from far away—and it is—but up close, it's a bit kinky! I like it. Delfina Delettrez silver ring, $210

No pair of shoes this fall has inspired such lust in me than this blue velvet lace-up pair from Loeffler Randall. I am watching them like a hawk lest they go on sale. Natane Lace-Up Stilettos, $595

A recent trip to the Rag & Bone sample sale led me to this revelation: I will wear pretty much anything of theirs. Seriously, everything they make just fits me well. And I think if I owned this sweater, I'd wear it constantly. Rag & Bone Montgomery Crop Sweater, $175

Bottom row:
I've been looking for a leopard-print haircalf tote forever (specific, I know), but I think this one by Maje might just be the winner. Maje leopard tote, $840

This is like a fashion version of the ironic hipster tee. Cheeky! A.P.C. Fashion Is for Losers Tee, $35

Finally, I saw this necklace back at Dannijo's fall/winter presentation in February, and I've been lusting after it ever since. It's such a strong piece, it's an instant outfit-maker. And a very memorable one at that. Dannijo bib necklace, $995

Top row:
Designed by Ed Ruscha (one of my favorite artists!), this benefits the Art Production Fund. Art Production Fund towel, $95

This peace pillow is from a collaboration between CB2 and Bawa La Tumaini, a fair trade organization that empowers impoverished Kenyans. watu kwa amani 20" pillow, $40

100% of the proceeds from these skinny jeans benefit City Year, a national service organization. J Brand City Year 811 Jeans, $144

Middle row:
Crafted from Vietnam War-era scrap metal, proceeds from this bracelet generate income for artisan families in Bali's Naphia Village. ARTICLE 22 peaceBOMB Arm Bangle, $40

25% of the proceeds from this cheery orange silk-modal scarf benefit the Nancy Davis Foundation for MS. Donna Karan Erase MS Scarf, $295

100% of proceeds from the sale of this woven bracelet go to the FECHAC Foundation to support its Expanding Children's Development Program in Mexico. PROJECT PAZ Woven Bracelet by Sara Beltran for Dezso, $65

Bottom row:
Everyone knows (and loves) TOMS shoes, and now they've added sunglasses—each pair purchased help TOMS give sight to one person in need—through medical treatment, prescription eyeglasses or sight-saving surgery. TOMS striped sunglasses, $145

There are several high-profile celebrities that created mugs for Zrike Co.'s "Whatever it Takes" campaign, but George Clooney's is my favorite, and 20% of proceeds go to his charity of choice, the 21st Century Leaders and CARE International. Zrike Co. Here's what to get your Gen X (and proud!) significant other.

Top row:
While wearing designer goods isn't totally his style, this merino wool V-neck sweater undoubtedly is. Bonus cool points for the Goth McQ logo. McQ by Alexander McQueen V-neck sweater, $113

He thinks coffee-table books are so not his style, but he'll love the trip down memory lane courtesy of this book. the indie rock poster book, $25

He'll never have to use his always-ill-fated open-the-beer-on-the-countertop trick as long as he has this handy iPhone case. iBottleopener Bottle Opening iPhone Case, $20

Middle row:
While he'd never admit he needs help with such a manly endeavor as growing a mustache, this book should make the process easier (and more fascinating, sigh) for both of you. The Moustache Grower's Guide, $11

Keeping his business cards wrapped in a rubber band in his pocket just isn't cutting it anymore.
Scarlett Johansson is probably most known for her girl-next-door appeal, even in her most glamorous moments on the red carpet. She's the celebrity you want to hate (because your boyfriend has this huge crush on her) but you just can't, because she just seems so darn... real. Ugh! And if you thought it was hard enough to hate her as it is, she's now putting her celebrity platform to good use with a collaboration with Neff Headwear to fight cancer in the name of cold-weather wear. Scarlett has teamed up with the sporty brand to create two specially designed beanies, available only at Zappos, with a fraction of the proceeds going to City of Hope - one of the leading cancer research and treatment centers. These cotton beanies are not only just about the coziest stocking stuffer you can hand out this year, but they truly are the gift that keeps giving - up to 5,000 purchased beanies are matched with a beanie donation to City of Hope's cancer survivors, while every purchase after that earns City of Hope a 10% donation. Hats off to that, Scar-Jo!
While this NARS palette seems almost too beautiful to actually use, your BFF will know exactly what to do with it. Nars Hanamichi Kabuki Eyeshadow, $65

She's your favorite mani-pedi partner, so why not commemorate the occasion with this festive set? Deborah Lippmann Three Times a Lady 3-piece Nail Lacquer Set, $35

Bottom row:
You'd get her a PS1 bag if you could, but in the meantime, your bestie will still love rolling out this fancy towel at the beach. Proenza Schouler Beach Towel, $145

Because she knows what song this line is from: "What's that you've got on/Is it Comme des Garçons?" Comme des Garcons leather zip around wallet, $100

And while she'll gladly participate in a cheese-fest with you, fondue is that much better when served in a ceramic bunny. Shinzi Katoh Dip-Hop Hit Fondue Set, $50

And yet he always seems to appreciate what you get him. Dads are awesome, aren't they?

Top row:
Replace Dad's Timex with a Nixon, a line of watches that come in classic styles but unexpected materials. Nixon Gunmetal Watch, $350

This year's totally fail-safe Dad gift: Walter Isaacson's biography of Steve Jobs. Steve Jobs by Walter Isaacson, $18

Because his current system of duct-taping a flashlight where he needs one is not always the best, Dad would appreciate this go-anywhere LED torch light. GorillaTorch LED Light, $26

Middle row:
Fact: Dads like hats. This is the style that mine prefers, in a timeless, English-countryman style. Lock & Co Hatters Herringbone Tweed Flat Cap, $140

If your dad gets as upset as mine does when the local grocery store stops carrying his beer of choice, then perhaps he'll appreciate a beer-making kit. Home Brew Kit, $15

My dad is hopelessly devoted to Old Spice, but if yours appreciates the finer things, he should love this set featuring one of my favorite manly scents in the world. Acqua Di Parma Colonia Gift Set, $120

Bottom row:
Do you know any dads who don't love gadgets? Didn't think so. He should get a kick out of this cool handheld scanner. VuPoint Magic Wand II Portable Scanner, $100

True, that trip to Starbucks may be a highlight of his day, but after he starts making his own espresso, he'll never want to go back. De'Longhi Lattissima Plus Espresso Machine, $500

Win-win: This compost collector creates nutrient-rich soil for Dad's garden, and its odor-resistant design means Mom won't complain about the associated odor. FRESH AIR COMPOST COLLECTOR, $30

But if that's not your style (totally understandable), here are gifts that any stylish mom should love.

Top row:
One thing my mom has instilled in me is a love of slippers; I feel almost naked without them when at home. Considering her cookie habit as well, I think she'd approve of these. Late Night Cookies Slippers, $59

My mom likes a colorful bag; this one is cool enough for you to borrow. Botkier leather satchel handbag, $495

Moms are some of the only people who I feel can get away with wearing a cape. This one is cozy but fashionable too. Toga Pulla Cape, $462

Middle row:
Some people consider candles to be an impersonal gift (and they can be), but these feature the delicious scents of Ladurée, and the box is adorable. A Christmas Enchantment Set, $100

This fur cossack hat is so chic, your mom won't care about ruining her hairdo. GLAMOURPUSS fur hat, $229

L-Atitude is an awesome curated site that has a lot of great jewelry from around the world—meaning the big, dramatic stuff that moms like. Blue Tassel beaded necklace, $41

Bottom row:
These stackable mixing bowls make cooking fun and save space too (not that your mom's gargantuan suburban kitchen doesn't have room to spare). Nest 8 bowls, $50

If your mom was bummed about missing Missoni for Target, get her the real deal—these hand towels are a lot more affordable than you think! Missoni Home - Homer Hand Towel, $23

Your mom taught you everything you know about fashion—or at least that there's no competing with French women, right? Parisiennes: A Celebration Of French Women, $50
Here's what to get your tech-geek brother.

Top row:
When his skateboard is his main mode of transportation, you can at least make sure it's stylish, with this deck designed by Liz Goldwyn. Liz Goldwyn Limited Edition Skateboard Deck, $200

Sadly, these Lucha key covers are sold out on CB2's website, but hopefully you can find them in stores—and hopefully your bro will no longer confuse the top lock with the bottom! lucha key toppers, set of two , $5.95

If your brother is a true hipster-geek, chances are he rides a fixie. Not that there's anything wrong with that, or this book. "42x12: the cult of fixed", $30

Middle row:
Rob Pruitt's Mickey Mouse tee subverts the classic, making your bro look both lovable and smart-alecky. Rob Pruitt You Are Mickey Tee, $100

He's never met Star Wars-themed merchandise he hasn't liked, which means he should love one of these alarm clocks. Lego Star Wars Mini-Figure Alarm Clock, $44

File under things I can't explain: Why guys think ray guns are so cool. Brace yourself for the onslaught of Facebook photos of him posing with it. RAY GUN SCULPTURE , $150

Bottom row:
Because he's probably never cleaned his apartment, perhaps this robot is a good idea, at least for his desk (where he spends all his time anyway). Mini Robot Vacuum, $26

One small accessory can do a world of good for his style. This bungee-cord-esque bracelet shouldn't be too much of a stretch. MIANSAI rope bracelet, $60

Or you can just call a spade a spade with this LED-powered belt buckle (the message can be changed, FYI). LED Belt Buckle, $20
