Magic and swordplay at First Departure
In First Departure, players are introduced the people of the planet Roak, a medieval world filled with magic and swordplay. The game's hero, Roddick, is investigating reports of villagers in a nearby town falling ill and turning to stone. While searching out a cure with his friends Doane and Millie, Roddick stumbles across crew members from an orbiting spaceship, who explain that they are at war with an alien race responsible for the mystery illness. The Captain offers to take the group aboard to help cure the people of Roak and figure out why they were infected in the first place.
The thing about updating an old-school RPG for a new generation of gamers is that you can't stray too far from the formula that made the original a success to begin with. What this means for Star Ocean: First Departure is that the game follows just about every convention of the JRPG genre. That includes lots of grinding for experience and equipment while travelling from location to location completing strings of quests to advance the plot inch by inch.

So, what do you do if you're a game publisher and you've milked one of your most famous franchises to the point of near-exhaustion? If you're Square Enix you can simply dip into the vault and hook another classic franchise to the milking machine. This time around the publisher is pulling from the days of the Super Famicom, bringing PSP owners a remake of the original RPG classic Star Ocean. For fans, the question will be whether or not the game stands the test of time, even with a fresh coat of paint and a few new tweaks.
The premise revolves around the classic trope of a fish out of water. Imagine a Dungeons & Dragons hero suddenly beamed aboard the Starship Enterprise and you'll start to get a taste of the series' flavor.

Last, but not least, is the game's spokesman: the Chicago Cubs' Sammy Sosa. The Dominican slugger has gone from 3DO's High Heat Baseball to this arcade baseball game. And already, his work in the promotional materials is far better than when he eerily spouted, "It's so real," for 3DO. Apparently, baseball games have also "been very, very good" to Sosa.
MLB Slugfest Loaded comes out well after the season starts, but should add some life to the market. I'm really looking forward to taking this one online…mostly to parade around as A-Rod and take on any suckers from Boston.

MLB SlugFest (PS2/XBox)
While the baseball world is becoming exceedingly ridiculous thanks to the New York Yankees (I'm not complaining though, I was born in the Bronx), baseball games are progressing at a relatively normal pace…except for one. Midway's MLB Slugfest series stands out from the crowd by serving over-the-top action based on America's pastime. The upcoming version, MLB Slugfest: Loaded, continues the rowdy baseball tradition and adds some notable improvements. Though the gameplay I saw looked only incrementally better than last year's version, Loaded adds two big additions that will make the game greater than ever.

Midway recently held an event to show off its 2004 lineup. The company is headed in a much different and much better direction this year. Gone are the days of Freaky Flyers and Dr. Muto, and in are edgy action games like NARC, unique stealth-action games like Psi-Ops, and ridiculously smooth arcade-sports titles like NBA Ballers. The company's future is looking bright, but the best is yet to come. Midway showed a teaser of the next Mortal Kombat and talked a bit about John Romero's (remember him?) work on the next Gauntlet.
