If you only have a 2-week vacation and you would like to get the best out of your Indonesian trip, where should you go?

Home to more than 17,000 islands, 300 distinct native ethnicities and 700 different languages, truly exploring Indonesia will take a lifetime! However, don't let these numbers scare you away. You can still experience the best of Indonesia if your trip is well planned.

According to the Indonesian Ministry of Culture and Tourism, more than 6 million foreigners visited Indonesia in 2008. This remarkable number increased enormously from 2007. Despite the recent negative media coverage of Indonesia's situation, tourism in Indonesia has never lost its value.

Here are some of the top tourist destinations in Indonesia:

Bali - The Island of Gods
Bali has now become one of the top WORLD destinations for its white sand beaches, blue sky, magnificent waves, tropical weather and friendly locals. For several years, the International Travel Magazine awarded Bali as the world's best island. There were more than 1.4 million tourists to Bali in 2008. You have to wonder, what makes Bali as the most popular tourist destination in Indonesia?

First of all, the island is located 8 to 9 degrees south of the equator with the Java Sea to the north and the Indian Ocean to the south, which gives Bali a wonderful tropical weather all year long!
If it is rich cultural experience that you are looking for, Bali has it all for you. Balinese people have very strong Hindu beliefs. This is depicted through the statues and temples that you can visit all around Bali. One of the most popular art form is "Tari Kecak" or the Ramayana Monkey Chant. A fact that most people doesn't know about "Tari Kecak" is that this art form was originally a traditional trance ritual.

Bunaken - A Marine Paradise on Earth
It is said that Bunaken Marine Park has one of the highest levels of marine biodiversity. The park covers 89,065 hectares of warm tropical waters. It is a paradise of magnificent coral reefs. Many tourists come to this site to dive or snorkel to see the corals firsthand. Bunaken has received much international recognition for its marine park preservation. For instance, The International Coral Reef Action Network (ICRAN) has chosen Bunaken as its single Asian demonstration site for sustainable reef tourism. You are guaranteed to have a spectacular diving experience here!

Staying on the marine park is also a relaxing one. Its laid-back lifestyle provides tourists with an enjoyment that they don't usually get in big city life. Here, everything flows gently and you need not to worry. Start your day by going for a morning dive, then come back for a quick lunch and nap before going for an evening dive.

Jakarta - A Metropolitan City in Indonesia
Jakarta, the capital and the largest city in Indonesia, is home to 8 million people. On the other part of the city, Museum Wayang collects thousands of shadow puppets from all parts of Indonesia.

There are many other things that you can do when you visit Jakarta. Furniture manufacturers often treat other woods like American Cherry and Japanese Oak with teak oil, as these woods are not resilient in the outdoors. However, this treated wood may become vulnerable once the oil dries up. As it is in high order and needs heavy processing, teak wood is considered as a luxurious amenity.

With a fine grain surface, the teak wood will not splinter and its color varies from light to dark brown. The wood is very smooth and it is resilient against swelling, shrinking and rotting. With high amounts of natural oils and silica, the teak wood can be preserved for many years to come. After a while, the wood may gain a silver-gray look. This is due to the natural weathering process which takes place. If you wish to retain the original look of your Indonesian Teak Furniture, you could apply some teak oil.

After the 1998 crisis, the furniture industry in Indonesia soared. There were many reasons; some were a weak rupiah and a lack of competition. As a great proportion of the world's teak comes from Indonesia, the administration keeps a main teak supply. As Indonesian Teak Furniture was available at a very cheap rate, many people took advantage of the situation. The teak furniture industry in Indonesia can be classified into two major sectors; the organized and unorganized sectors.

ORGANIZED SECTOR

All the major players in the market are a part of this sector. These organizations use sophisticated technology and machinery to produce their goods. International manufacturing standards are applied here.

UNORGANIZED SECTOR

Individuals in the unorganized sector comprise of small carpenters, warehouse operators and exporters. In the unorganized sector, international manufacturing standards are rarely applied.

Indonesian Teak Furniture comes in a variety of grades. One needs to have a keen eye to spot the difference. It can be tough to differentiate between two products which look similar. One seller might sell a teak chair for $15.00 while another seller may sell a similar looking chair for $150.00!

One of the most important things to keep in mind, when buying Indonesian Teak Furniture, is the creator of the product. You should ask the seller about the origins of the product. Is it factory standard or has it been manufactured by some carpenter who has no idea about the international manufacturing standards. You should also keep in mind the wood quality, fittings used, kind of glue as well as the guarantee provided by the seller. Before venturing into anything, one always needs to arm oneself with information. Indonesian Teak Furniture is no different.

The gorgeous Indonesian Teak Furniture showcases the culture and art of the Indonesian people. It will add a pleasant and vibrant look to your outdoor setting. While it is certainly not the cheapest teak furniture around, it will definitely last a long time. Invest in Indonesian Teak Furniture and you will be reaping the benefits for many years to come.

Backpacking Information In Indonesia

INDONESIA

Population: 237,556,363 (2010 Indonesian Census)
Capital: Jakarta Area: 1.9 million sq km (742,308 sq miles)
Major languages: Indonesian, 300 regional languages
Major religion: Islam
Life expectancy: 65 years (men), 69 years (women) (UN)
Monetary unit: 1 rupiah (Rp)

The Republic of Indonesia is then again one of the MUST-SEE places in Southeast Asia a small hop from the Indochina Peninsula. Although it has previously lost some of its charisma to the world with the <s>2002 killings of 164 international tourists and 38 locals in Kuta, Bali</s>, tagging along tectonic hyperactivity scares that brought about almost instantaneously the tragedy of the 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami that took 167,737 lives in North Sumatra, was yet another big blow to Indonesia's tourism industry, the island paradise is simply tantalizing as ever. With raison d'être, the Java Man, one of the world's earliest species of man, has found his home here around 500 millennia to 2 million years ago. And rather surely with its 17,508 islands that can result to pleasure overdrive, travellers can't resist the ethereal music, spectacular dance, delightful storytelling and exquisite craftsmanship - great manifestations of a rich and spiritual life. Indonesia just knows how to tingle the pleasure centres of each of its travellers be it by flavour, spectacle, aroma, or sensation, in addition to the size of this place, possibly the largest paradise that causes more often than not a rethinking of one's departure. Perhaps another night?

GEOGRAPHY
Fact remains, travel to Indonesia is dynamic exploration chasing after islands and wildlife, which is quite a lot. Indonesia is, after all 1,904,569 km2-territory with 17,508 islands with great biodiversity, 6,000 of which are inhabited, making it the largest and most populous country in the Southeast Asia. Indonesia (5 00 S, 120 00 E) is made up of forest-clad mountains and lowland plains and coasts that have served as the home to nomadic and more advanced civilizations of the archipelago. Mountains can be found inland, toward the island centres of bigger islands, the highest of which is the Puncak Jaya at an altitude of 5,030 metres above the sea level, the Indian Ocean in this part.

CLIMATE
The climate just can't get better for a Southeast Asian travel, tropical climate as usual as Indonesia straddles the equator. The traveller can't ask for more sun or heat with average temperatures varying very subtly throughout the year from 26-30 °C. But the highlands and mountainous regions like Kalimantan, Sulawesi, W. Java, and W. Sumatra and Papua offer a different kind of cool, regardless the two seasons of wet and dry.

PEOPLE
Indonesia is the 4th most heavily populated country in the world succeeding the United States with 240,271,522 people, or officially, Indonesians. Its high population and rapid modernization entail environmental concerns of excessive waste and poor management of it, large-scale illegal deforestation and massive air and water pollution with related forest fires that threaten neighbouring countries Brunei and Malaysia. The Javanese are the most numerous ethnic group with almost 45% of the population, and the island of Java, the most populous island in the world with 130 million of inhabitants. After which comes the Sudanese with 15% of Indonesians and some 300 groups such as the Madurese who are at odds with the Dayak, the Minangkabau, Bajar, Banten, Betawi, and the Bugis.

RELIGION
The republic nation prides on being the country with the largest Muslim population on the planet with almost 90% of a Muslim demographic. Naturally, Islam is the way of life here, that main ideology to every action, every principle from preparation of meat and food to governance and law. Christianity is a budding faith in many small villages where missionary work is chiefly directed to especially in North Sumatra with 9% of the population in practice and still adding. Hindu and other pagan or animist beliefs incompletely identified are also in practice.

LANGUAGE
BAHASA INDONESIA, a modified Malay language, is the official language of the state. ENGLISH is widely spoken in major cities and is the language used for foreign matters and the hospitality industry, DUTCH, the colonial language spoken as more of a creole by a minor senile generation, and a few local dialects have dotted the linguistic landscape.

ATTRACTIONS
The rich and hearty Indonesian culture is the perfect accent to the allure of sights of this island paradise. Nothing quite epitomizes Indonesian allure as the rich biodiversity at the coral reef kingdoms to which the traveller can scuba dive and witness colours and creatures so diverse, so flamboyant, possibly none that anyone has seen anywhere on earth, until now. We're talking possibly hundreds of shades of blue, red, green, yellow, and so on. Sulawesi is a place to site rare animals found nowhere else in the world that have evolved to survive in the island of heat and volcanic activity. Crater and volcanic lakes of Sumatra, alabaster beaches of Maluku, more volcanoes of Java, resorts of Bali, surfing sites and fine woven village textiles of Lombok, rainforests in Sabah and Sarawak, Borneo, West Papua, and thousands more places offer pristine nature experiences that is are constantly threatened, it is heart-breaking. In the Orangutan Sanctuary at the Indian Fire Islands-volcanic hotspot, the traveller will also feel a certain over-joy that suddenly shifts to melancholy realizing that these beings are in danger as well.

The irresistible and accessible charm of the people and the places create a truly phenomenal experience. This is home away from home being a place that is totally different but so familiar. From big island hopping trips from Sumatra to Kalimantan or Papua, or cheap thrills of watching Katchak in southern Bali, the common attraction and the genuine beauty is from the people scarcely touched by modern living, thriving in harmony with nature. But life is no beach, at least for the locals with 17.8% living below the poverty line with so much of a health care system as herbal medicines, and as they get a daily dose of the salty-smelling cool sea water, the Indonesians in small villages can never be calm about their own dear lives.

FOOD
Nonetheless, none can take the festive element of the culinary epiphanies to be had here. It does not matter the place, rest assured a guest will have a wide and colourful spread of dishes that are out-of-this-world in colours and flavours. The nine essential gastronomic elements of Indonesian cuisine are rice, fuel, cooking oil, flour, corn, salt, sugar, eggs and meat. A country of many faces, so is Indonesian cuisine combining Indian, Middle Eastern, European, Chinese, and Malay influences with their use of spices and methods of cooking and food presentation, but not without sharing some of their own like nutmeg, clove, and galangal, spices native to Indonesia.

Most popular to the world are dishes such as satay, beef rendang, sambal, lumpia, pangsit, and many others. Authentic Indonesian cuisine is not a solid concept per se. Rather it pertains to the cuisine in Indonesia which renders localized versions of others. Rice is a staple not restrictive to main meals as it is also used in desserts using a variant called "sticky rice" cooked in coconut milk or buras. In some dishes, food is so hot and spicy, it can kill microbes.

Indonesian food also offers some Eastern exotica of spicy brains, lungs, and gizzards, but besides its high cholesterol content, there is no reason to not eat it. Islamic food prohibitions are practiced but with some leniency. The rationale is that alcohol has been in existence even before Islam and is part of traditional and cultural practices. There's a big and beautiful world out there, but, a world of its own, Indonesia is a tough contender.

Discover The Unique Culture of Indonesia

Indonesian culture has shaped it's ways throughout the generations between it's original indigenous customs and traditions and the multiple influences of the foreign people. Nail is the enclave of a unique and colorful form of Hinduism, and of its thousands of temples Besakih, Tanah Lot and Uluwatu are the three most impressive. The festivals celebrated at all these shrines are a colorful and vibrant celebration of the devout traditional lifestyle that has drawn tourists to the island for decades most visitors also go to the southern beach resorts Kuta, a heady, hedonistic mix of hotels, shops, restaurants and nightlife, but there are plenty of quieter resorts around the coast, and a few secluded spots remain for total relaxation. Those interested in art, crafts, music and dance usually head for Ubud, a cool, laid-back town with galleries, studios, performances and classes galore and plenty of local walks among the rice-terraces to engage the more energetic. The still smoking Gunung Batur, in the volcanic centre of the island, is a popular climb, usually done in the pitch dark so as to arrive at the top in time to admire the glowing sunrise.

Gunung Bromo

The obligatory sunrise views of this mountain in east Java, with the peak and its equally stunning neighbours rising from an almost other worldly sea of sand, are simply spell binding. There are also plenty of wails to enjoy in this cool, attractive region.

Borobudur

Java's number-one tourist attraction, this colossal, multi-tiered temple is the world's largest Buddhist stupa. Over a thousand years old, the temple, though now ruined, is still surprisingly evocative, with over three thousand reliefs detailing scenes from everyday life and the path followed by the soul to enlightenment, along with ancient tales illustrated the journey.

Lake Toba

In northern Sumatra, this is Southeast Asia's largest freshwater lake. Its central island, Samosir, is the heartland of the Toba Batak people and offers great scenery, trekking and relaxation, with the option of visiting megalithic stone complexes, local villages and hot springs.

Orangutans

The animals at the orangutan rehabilitation centre at Bukit Lawang in Sumatra are arguably the most famous example of Indonesia's wildlife. The centre aims to reintroduce into the wild orangutans that have been rescued from captivity; visitors here are welcome to watch the twice-daily feeding sessions. Komodo Dragons

An apparent throwback to the age of dinosaurs, these creatures, actually the world's largest lizards, live on Komodo in Nusa Tenggara, the chain of islands stretching between Bali and West Papua. The largest ever recorded was more than 3m long and weighed in at 150kg, though most of the dragons aren't quite so enormous.

Diving

The highlight of many visits, Indonesia's marine life is startling in its diversity. Current centres for diving are Bali, Gili Islands off Lombok, and Sulawesi

Tanah Toraja

This region of Sulawesi is home to the Torajan people, who have a wealth of traditional architecture and ceremonies, most famously funerals. Also on offer are plenty of opportunities for trekking in the scenic highlands

Yogyakarta

The city is the heartland of Javanese arts; exhibitions of art and batik, and performances of music, drama, puppetry and dance abound, with courses available for visitors. The Kraton, the old walled city, is well preserved for architecture buffs, and Yogyakarta is ideally placed for excursions into the surrounding countryside and - if it hasn't blown its lid recently - treks up Gunung Merapi, Indonesia's most volatile volcano.

Nusa Tenggara

The most westerly of this string of islands, Lombok, is a great antidote to its more developed neighbors, Bali. Its highlights include Gunung Merapi, Indonesia's second highest mountain, with a huge crater lake; the tiny Gili Islands off its north-west coast; and the unspoilt south-coast beaches. The further east you go Nusa Tenggara, the less tourist infrastructure there is, so the more time you'll need; highlights here include Sumba's unspoilt beaches and traditional ikat weaving and the three-coloured lake of Keli Mutu on Flores

Baliem Valley in West Papua

It's time-consuming and expensive to get here, and to really explore the area you'll need trek long distances and often sleep extremely rough. But the scenery is dramatic and splendid, and the tribes of the area are managing to retain an age old lifestyle and culture, often despite considerable pressure from outsiders.

Surfing

G-land off the south coast of Java and Desert Point off the southwest coast of Lombok at Bangko. Bangko are just two of many legendary Indonesian surf spots.

Staying in a longhouse

The indigenous Dyak peoples in the interior of Kalimantan have retained their traditional beliefs and ways of life to varying degrees. Their communal longhouse dwellings - long wooden structures raised on stilts - have survived and are being restored, and many welcome visitors

The Prambanan temple complex

The Hindu temples here, accessed from Yogyakarta in Java, are soaring, intricately carved structures dating from the ninth century AD. Visits at dawn and dusk are especially atmospheric.

Wayang

Wayang show in every country has its own technique and style, thus puppet is made in Indonesia Indonesian people who have a genuine story, style and extraordinary puppeteer.
Sometimes repertoire Panji stories and stories Menak (Islamic stories) performed well.

Puppet, by the predecessors of this country really means very deep. The use of Javanese language has extended to overseas due to increasing curiosity about Javanese culture, which consists many beautiful traditional dances, temples, traditional rites, and so on. We can also find some Javanese speaking people in Malaysia, Singapore, Suriname, Netherlands, New Caledonia and some other countries outside Indonesia.

If you speak one strata language in daily conversation (example: English, Indonesian, Dutch), you may find learning Javanese is so difficult. That is because Javanese is a multistrata language. You need different style of speaking for different level of courtesy you intend to convey. There may be also a slight difference between Javanese spoken language and Javanese written language.

In Javanese spoken language, the diction and grammar rules are more supple, practical and communicative; whereas in Javanese written language, the rules are more strict.

Generally, daily Javanese spoken language is divided into 3 stratum, those are Basa Ngoko, Basa Krama, and Basa Krama Madya.

1. Basa Ngoko Lugu/Basa Ngoko Andhap

Basa Ngoko Lugu uses lowest form of word in all parts of sentence. This style conveys the lowest courtesy in conversation. It is commonly and rightfully used in occasion where those considered higher of social level speak to those of lower one, for example:

- Parents to children

- Between close friends

- To people of same age

- Leader to subordinates

- Teacher to students

b. Pronouns and predicates use higher form of word, the Krama form.

Basa Ngoko Alus can be used in these occasions, such as:

- Older people to younger people but of higher rank

- Between close friends, with intention to convey higher courtesy in speaking.

2. Basa Krama

Basa Krama uses the highest form of word in sentences. Actually, it consists of 2 word forms; Krama and Krama Inggil.

The Krama forms are used when you want to express yourself, while the Krama Inggil forms are used when you want to speak about your speaking partner or another person. Krama Inggil conveys greater courtesy than Krama.

Basa Krama can be used in these occasions, such as:

- Children to their parents

- Younger people to older people

- Between new acquaintances

- Students to their teacher

3. Basa Krama Madya/Basa Madya

Basa Krama Madya is mixed style between Basa Ngoko and Basa Krama. It is also known as Basa Dhagel or Basa Setengah-setengah. It is meant to convey plenty information fast without much expense of courtesy.

This strata of language is non standard and only used in practical conversation or in casual conversation, for example conversation of people in the market, people passing each other in the street, and so on.

People of Java are known for their hospitality and courtesy. Therefore, their language, Javanese, takes a very important part in their culture. Javanese, however, is still growing. It has rich flavour of coconut milk and other Indonesian traditional spices. The original recipe, it has a very spicy taste, but in this recipe, I reduce some of the chillies. If you think the amount of chillies in this recipe is still plenty, you can reduce it as well to the level of spicy that you can handle. To add a variation in this recipe, I have added potatoes and eggs.

Ingredients:

1 kg Tenderloin Beef Meat, cut into 5 x 5 x 5 cm

3 Potatoes

4 Eggs

2000 ml Coconut Milk (from 3 coconuts)

2 cm Greater Galangal, bruise to release flavour

4 stalks Lemon Grass, pick the white part then bruise to release flavour

8 Kafiir Lime Leaves, spines removed

1 Turmeric Leaves

3 Bay Leaves

Spice paste (Grinded or Blended Ingredients):

15 Shallots

5 cloves Garlic

100 gr Ground Red Chilies

4 cm Ginger

2 cm Turmeric

2 teaspoons Salt

5 Candlenuts

1 teaspoon Coriander Seed

Directions:

1. Many people come to Bali year after year because of the amazing people, stunning scenery, and of course mile after mile of amazing swells and waves. Before you head to Bali, you need to be aware of two places: Uluwatu Temple and Suluban Beach

Uluwatu Temple is one of the oldest temples in Indonesia and sits on the cliffs up above the ocean. It offers amazing views out to the ocean, sunset, and surrounding beaches. It is also used by surfers down on the beach who learn rather quickly to direct themselves in the waves according to the direction of the temple.

This is a Hindu temple erected as a worshipping ground to the "spirits of the sea." It has become a hot spot for visitors to Uluwatu and a legend to all local surfers. While you are in Uluwatu, Bali you cannot leave without visiting the temple at least once.

There are also raves held at the temple and along the beaches anytime there is a full moon. The raves held inside the temple will be a lot calmer than those found on the beaches, which may be more ideal for many travelers who want to experience this exciting form of Indonesian full moon celebration.

One of the best beaches to stay at in the Uluwatu area is Suluban Beach. There are amazing cliffs running along the beach with comfortable villas nestled in the cliffs which can be rented at reasonable prices. The surf is always hot on this beach, with many tourists enjoying the atmosphere created by the mix of enthusiastic travelers and the locals who happen to be excellent surfers as well.

You can find Suluban Beach at the Pecatu Village and will find it to be one of the more peaceful, relaxing beaches in Uluwatu. While there are great surfing opportunities here, you will also have the chance at other recreational activities out on the water. That makes it a great place for families or groups to visit, since some can surf while others enjoy snorkeling and other adventures that aren't quite as risky.

This area of Bali is known for being a hot spot for more advanced surfers, so keep that in mind when you determine who comes along for the trip. Beginners or those who are not quite comfortable on more dangerous waves may not feel comfortable hitting the water with the expert locals who have been living on the waves their entire lives.

Of course, there are other adventures to be explored on Suluban Beach, so those who decide the waves are too much can always find other things to do. Even just walking along the beach and enjoying the scenery is quite the experience in this area of Bali.

Suluban Beach is close to the Uluwatu Temple, so that is of course another exploration that you should make while visiting the beach and staying in the cliff villas. If you want to relax from the stress of your daily life and hit the waves, then Suluban Beach is an excellent destination for a vacation.

Garut ! But for those who would like to spend a luxurious time under the sun and on a white and wonderful beach with board rides and surrounded by a beautiful coral reef then Nusa Lembongan is the place where you should book your plane tickets now.

Nusa lembongan is an island in Indonesia and it is also a piece of the well-known Lesser Sunda Islands. Offically Nusa Lembongan is one of the sub districts of the Klungkung republic. Nusa Lembogan is one of the island that make up the regency of Klungkung. Nusa Lembongan is the only tourist attraction among the three offshore sub regency of Klungkung. The fact that its population is a mere 5,000 makes it more of a peaceful place than a busy tourist hot spot. The island which is about 8 square kilometers has a huge tourist attraction because of its low limestone cliffs and the rather small tides crashing against them as they make the beautiful white beaches. There three chief villages of the island.

The most extraordinary thing in Nusa Lembogan is that there is a house dug out of coral but only with a spoon, it is owned by Made Biasa and it took 15 years to complete. The Mushroom Bay and the JungutBatu are the main places where the tourists come and gather and there are many tourist industries located in this place. This is to be referred as the main location of all the activates that happen on the island of Nusa Lembongan. Here almost 75% of the population resides here.

To the east there is Lambok. In the northeast the island has a large mangrove forest which comprises of 212 hectares. The people mainly depend on tourism to support the economy. They also focus on agriculture, fishing and most important seaweed cultivation. As the local people say it is small to explore but large in giving comfort. If you go there you will get a glimpse of how local people live in the traditional way. But if you are planning to stay there for a few days then you might just get a glimpse of the breathtaking view of little lights in the water at night which are actually boats with lanterns.

There are crystal clear water in which you can have the pleasure of swimming by the coral. These crystal clear waters are very good for water sports and for people that love water sports, this is a paradise for them. You can walk the whole island in four hours or you might want to hire a motor bike. You can even get a chance to walk through the seaweed farms. There are many carving shops around the island for the tourists. There is also a resort where you can go. I myself went to the resort and found it very beautiful because of its location. But not many people go to the resort which makes it a very good opportunity because of the peace and quiet. It is known as a great place for surfers having 3 "awesome" surfing spots, they are: The playgrounds, Shipwrecks and Lacerations. The reef is a good place for scuba divers too. There is also a Hai beach club where you can hang out with swimmers and all kinds of people from all around the world.

There is also the crystal bay where many underwater photographers flock around. There is a legend of Nusa Lembogan where there is an old man called DukuhJumpungan who had a magical boat and if he was stuck at any point that place would become an ocean. One day he wanted to make the Mount Tohlangkir disappear and become an ocean with his magical powers but as he stuck his boat into the island a dreadful collision happened and the boat sank, the place where the boat sank is now called Nusa Lembogan. Well if you are planning to go there I should tell you how. There are public boats which depart from Sanur but it is also possible to hire a private boat which is a much faster route.

Kebaya

Historically, the development of kebaya Sunda women can be traced by observing habits of women dressed in Sundanese from simple to dress kebaya nowadays, is this:

Early Days. only use a p o k, covered with scarves.

Medieval period.
