Ijen Crater or Kawah Ijen is another volcanic tourism attraction in Indonesia. Ijen Crater (Kawah Ijen) is a famous tourism object, which has been known by the domestic and foreign tourists because of the beautiful and charming nature. It is 5,466 hectares, 2,386 meters high from the depth of the sea, with a 92 hectares tourism forest. The best time to enjoy the crater scenery is at morning, when the yellow sunlight glows the yellow water and shines the surrounding mountain like mount Merapi, the sister of Mount Ijen. Morning haze is creating a tranquility that we don't get at the metropolitan towns. At 2 pm, the crater is closed for the reason that the thick smoke from the crater that is poisonous.

Javanese Language - An Overview for Foreign People

Javanese is a traditional language commonly used in Indonesia, especially for those who live in Java Island. Javanese is used by more than 75,500,000 people as their native language. The use of Javanese language has extended to overseas due to increasing curiosity about Javanese culture, which consists many beautiful traditional dances, temples, traditional rites, and so on. We can also find some Javanese speaking people in Malaysia, Singapore, Suriname, Netherlands, New Caledonia and some other countries outside Indonesia.

If you speak one strata language in daily conversation (example: English, Indonesian, Dutch), you may find learning Javanese is so difficult. That is because Javanese is a multistrata language. You need different style of speaking for different level of courtesy you intend to convey. There may be also a slight difference between Javanese spoken language and Javanese written language.

In Javanese spoken language, the diction and grammar rules are more supple, practical and communicative; whereas in Javanese written language, the rules are more strict.

Generally, daily Javanese spoken language is divided into 3 stratum, those are Basa Ngoko, Basa Krama, and Basa Krama Madya.

1. Basa Ngoko

Basa Ngoko is further divided into 2 stratum:

a. Basa Ngoko Lugu/Basa Ngoko Andhap

Basa Ngoko Lugu uses lowest form of word in all parts of sentence. This style conveys the lowest courtesy in conversation. It is commonly and rightfully used in occasion where those considered higher of social level speak to those of lower one, for example:

- Parents to children

- Between close friends

- To people of same age

- Leader to subordinates

- Teacher to students

b. Basa Ngoko Alus

Basa Ngoko Alus mainly uses lowest form of word in sentences, except for pronouns and predicates. Pronouns and predicates use higher form of word, the Krama form.

Basa Ngoko Alus can be used in these occasions, such as:

- Older people to younger people but of higher rank

- Between close friends, with intention to convey higher courtesy in speaking.

2. Basa Krama

Basa Krama uses the highest form of word in sentences. Actually, it consists of 2 word forms; Krama and Krama Inggil.

The Krama forms are used when you want to express yourself, while the Krama Inggil forms are used when you want to speak about your speaking partner or another person. Krama Inggil conveys greater courtesy than Krama.

Basa Krama can be used in these occasions, such as:

- Children to their parents

- Younger people to older people

- Between new acquaintances

- Students to their teacher

3. Basa Krama Madya/Basa Madya

Basa Krama Madya is mixed style between Basa Ngoko and Basa Krama. It is also known as Basa Dhagel or Basa Setengah-setengah. It is meant to convey plenty information fast without much expense of courtesy.

This strata of language is non standard and only used in practical conversation or in casual conversation, for example conversation of people in the market, people passing each other in the street, and so on.

People of Java are known for their hospitality and courtesy. Therefore, their language, Javanese, takes a very important part in their culture. Javanese, however, is still growing. It adapts many new foreign words to be what we know as today Modern Javanese.

Beef Rendang is very popular dish throughout Asia, originally it came from Padang, West Sumatra, Indonesia. It has rich flavour of coconut milk and other Indonesian traditional spices. The original recipe, it has a very spicy taste, but in this recipe, I reduce some of the chillies. If you think the amount of chillies in this recipe is still plenty, you can reduce it as well to the level of spicy that you can handle. To add a variation in this recipe, I have added potatoes and eggs.

Ingredients:

1 kg Tenderloin Beef Meat, cut into 5 x 5 x 5 cm

3 Potatoes

4 Eggs

2000 ml Coconut Milk (from 3 coconuts)

2 cm Greater Galangal, bruise to release flavour

4 stalks Lemon Grass, pick the white part then bruise to release flavour

8 Kafiir Lime Leaves, spines removed

1 Turmeric Leaves

3 Bay Leaves

Spice paste (Grinded or Blended Ingredients):

15 Shallots

5 cloves Garlic

100 gr Ground Red Chilies

4 cm Ginger

2 cm Turmeric

2 teaspoons Salt

5 Candlenuts

1 teaspoon Coriander Seed

Directions:

1. Boil Eggs for 7 minutes, peeled, set aside.

2. Boil Potatoes for 20 minutes until soft, peeled, set aside.

3. In a pot, boil coconut milk in medium fire. Add lemon grass,greater galangal, kafiir lime leaves, turmeric leaves and all blended ingredients, mix it all together.

4. Place the beef meat into the coconut milk, keep stirring until it boils.

5. After boiled, set the fire into low position. Cook until the beef meat tender and coconut milk dried up.

6. At last, place boiled potatoes and eggs into the pot, stir it a little bit, serve.

To reach this place one can go through Garut Bandung Highway via Kadungora subdistrict. From Kadungora one could use renting motorcyle called ojeg Haruman Sari village. It is more or less 15 km with 2 -5 meters wide street. From Haruman to Paraglaiding, it is more or less 7-8 km. Usually visitors use jeep. Activities that can be held here are paraglaiding, tracking, sight seeing and photography. Visitors come from Jakarta, Central Java, East Java and abroad like Singapore, Holland, Korea and America.

Cangkuang Temple

Cangkuang is a temple located on Cangkuang village. The name of Cangkuang derived from name of a tree called cangkuang (Pandanus Furcatus) that grows around grave of Embah Dalem Arif Muhammad.

To reach this location one could use bus from Bandung to Garut. It is about Rp.7.000. From Garut to Leles subdistrict there are public transportation service called "angkot". Nusa lembongan is an island in Indonesia and it is also a piece of the well-known Lesser Sunda Islands. Offically Nusa Lembongan is one of the sub districts of the Klungkung republic. Nusa Lembogan is one of the island that make up the regency of Klungkung. Nusa Lembongan is the only tourist attraction among the three offshore sub regency of Klungkung. The fact that its population is a mere 5,000 makes it more of a peaceful place than a busy tourist hot spot. If you go there you will get a glimpse of how local people live in the traditional way. But if you are planning to stay there for a few days then you might just get a glimpse of the breathtaking view of little lights in the water at night which are actually boats with lanterns.

There are crystal clear water in which you can have the pleasure of swimming by the coral. These crystal clear waters are very good for water sports and for people that love water sports, this is a paradise for them. You can walk the whole island in four hours or you might want to hire a motor bike. You can even get a chance to walk through the seaweed farms. There are many carving shops around the island for the tourists. There is also a resort where you can go. I myself went to the resort and found it very beautiful because of its location. But not many people go to the resort which makes it a very good opportunity because of the peace and quiet. It is known as a great place for surfers having 3 "awesome" surfing spots, they are: The playgrounds, Shipwrecks and Lacerations. The reef is a good place for scuba divers too. There is also a Hai beach club where you can hang out with swimmers and all kinds of people from all around the world.

There is also the crystal bay where many underwater photographers flock around. There is a legend of Nusa Lembogan where there is an old man called DukuhJumpungan who had a magical boat and if he was stuck at any point that place would become an ocean. One day he wanted to make the Mount Tohlangkir disappear and become an ocean with his magical powers but as he stuck his boat into the island a dreadful collision happened and the boat sank, the place where the boat sank is now called Nusa Lembogan. Well if you are planning to go there I should tell you how. There are public boats which depart from Sanur but it is also possible to hire a private boat which is a much faster route.

The general public often assume that Batik in West Java, ~~is derived from Javanese Culture (Central Java)~~. This is not entirely true. because according to Siksa Kanda’ng Karesian Sarga XVII dan XVIII Codex, said that there are all kinds of fabric (ornamental motif), such as:

kembang mu(n)cang, gagang senggang, sameleg, seumat sahurun, anyam cayut, sigeji, pasi,kalangkang ayakan, poleng re(ng)ganis, jayanti, cecempaan, paparanakan, mangin riris, silih ganti, bebernatan, papakanan, surat awi, parigi nyengsoh, gaganjar, lusian besar, kampuh jaya(n)ti, hujan riris, boeh alus, ragen panganten. Tentang segala macam kain, tanyalah pangeuyeuk (ahli tekstil). Begitulah menurut naskah SSK (1440 Saka = 1518 M).

From motives mentioned, most are not recognized anymore, or has been renamed. So it's hard to be traced back.

There are several batik centers distinctively, both basic color motif or ornament, such as:

Batik Garutan (derived from Garut). Brighter basic background (shades of white, light yellow / ivory). More motive of Rereng (with all its variations). It is very likely to growing, with more colorful motif. Several types of batik Garutan often used for the purposes of Brides.
Batik Ciamisan (derived from Ciamis). Maroon base color. Rereng ornamental motifs of traditional style. It does not grow anymore.

Sunda Land (Priangan) is known to have various unique and interesting culture, Jaipongan is one of the famous art and culture of this region. Jaipongan or Jaipong Dance is actually a modern dance that's because it's a modification of the traditional Sundanese Dance Ketuk Tilu. This Jaipong Dance performed with musical accompaniment is also typical, namely Degung. Music is a diverse collection of musical instruments such as Kendang, Go'ong, Saron, Kacapi, etc.. Degung can be likened to 'orchestra' in European music / American. A unique feature of this Jaipong Dance is a stomping music, where musical instruments most prominent drum sounds for dance accompaniment. This dance is usually performed by one, in pairs or in groups. As an interesting dance, Jaipong often performed on special occasions entertainment, salvation or wedding.

Ketuk Tilu is a social dance and entertainment at the same time which is usually held on the wedding events, entertainment events or activities cover in particular be held in a place large enough. The appearance of this dance in the community had nothing to do with a particular custom or a certain sacred ceremonies but purely as entertainment and association show Therefore Tilu tap dance was much appreciated by the public, especially in rural areas who rarely entertainment activities.
