* Very few schools offer Integrated & Doctoral Program. Applicants are responsible for connecting the university/universi ties they wish to apply for to find out whether or not such programs are offered.

* An applicant who applies for 5 year Integrated Master’s & Doctoral Program especially can get scholarship for 4 years only.

4. Main Notes for 2010 Selection
o Organizations accepting applications: Korean Embassies (Consulates) , adoption association, and Domestic Universities in Korea
* Applicants may not be recommended by more than one organization. Every applicant recommended by more than one organization will be disqualified automatically.
o Selection Procedure : Students recommended by a Korean Embassy (Consulate) or domestic
university will be evaluated separately.
o Obtain Admission From the University Before Entry to Korea:
- Applicants recommended by a Korean Embassy (Consulate) or overseas Korean adoptees must apply and gain admission into 1 of 5 universities out of the 61 designated universities.
- Applicants recommended by a university in Korea should enter the same university.
o Exemption of Korean language course: TOPIK level 5 or 6 certificate holder

5. Duration of KGSP
o Master’s : 3 yrs. (01.09.2010 ~ 31.08.2013) – 1 yr. of Korean language + 2 yrs. of Master’s
o Doctoral : 4 yrs. (01.09.2010 ~ 31.08.2014) – 1 yr. of Korean language + 3 yrs of Doctoral
o Integrated Master’s & Doctoral : 5 yrs. (01.09.2010 ~ 31.08.2015) – 1 yr. of Korean language + 4 yrs. of Integrated Master’s & Doctoral

6. Korean Language Course
o After 1 year of Korean language training, Master’s or doctoral program will be followed.
o Duration : 1 year (Scholarship students who still don’t get a TOPIK level 3 or above certificate after completing the language course should take an additional language course and can enter only after getting TOPIK level 3 or above)
* After additional 2 semesters of Korean language courses (total 1 year period), students who still don’t acquire the TOPIK 3 or above cannot enter the main program. (A student who used the additional language training will have demerit when he/she asks for an emergency extension with reasonable explanation. (For instance: Deduction of that period from the possible extension.)
o Institution :
- Applicants recommended by a Korean Embassy (Consulate) and overseas Korean adoptees will study at 1 of the 5 applied universities.
- Applicants recommended by the universities in Korea will study at the same university.
o Exemption of Korean language course: TOPIK level 5 or 6 certificate holder.
* Students who are exempted from the Korean language course may enter the graduate school starting from September 1, 2010 or March 1, 2011.
* Those who wish to enter on March 1, 2011 should get admission by himself/herself from the university and submit it to NIIED. (Otherwise, they will be disqualified. )
* A student exempted from Korean language course must enter the main program by Mar 1, 2011, otherwise he/she will be disqualified.
* A student who acquires TOPIK level 5 or 6 certificate during the Korean language course can enter the main program on Mar 1, 2011 if he/she wants to.

7. Application Qualifications
o Both applicant and his/her parents must be citizens of the foreign country.
* Applicants cannot have Korean citizenship.
o Applicants should be in good health, both mentally and physically, to stay in Korea for a long period of time.
o Should be under 40 years of age as of September 1, 2010
o Hold a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree as of September 1, 2010
* Applicants who are enrolling or have already enrolled in the same academic program in Korea as the one they are applying for will not be admitted.
* For Master’s program (or Integrated Master’s & Doctoral program): students who hold a Bachelor’s degree or a diploma that is equivalent to or higher than Bachelor’s degree
* For Doctoral program: students who hold a Master’s degree or a diploma that is equivalent to or higher than Master’s degree.
* Applicants who are expecting the adequate diploma should present their diploma by September 1, 2010 before entry.
o Should have a grade point average (G.P.A.) at least 2.64 on a 4.0 scale, 2.80 on a 4. 3 scale, 2.91 on a 4.5 scale or grades/marks/ score of 80% or higher from the previous attended institution
* If the grade is difficult to convert to percentage, official explanatory documents from the attended university are required.

8. Scholarship Payment
o Scholarship Period : same as the period of invitation
o Payment
-Airfare : A round-trip economy class ticket
* Airfare for entry will not be provided to one who is staying in Korea on account of the study (Korean language course, undergraduate or graduate school) or employment as of the confirmation date of selection of scholarship students.
* Fees within domestic travel, as well as insurance while travelling to and from the Republic of Korea, will not be provided.
-Monthly Allowance : 900,000 won(KRW) per month
-Research Allowance : 210,000 won for students in human and social sciences; 240,000 won for students in natural and mechanic sciences per semester
-Relocation (Settlement) Allowance : 200,000 won upon arrival
-Language Training Fee : The full costs up to 1 year
-Tuitions : All admission fees are waived by the host institution. The full tuition is paid by NIIED.
-Dissertation Printing Costs : 500,000 ~ 800,000 won for the costs related to a printing dissertation
-Medical Insurance : 15,000 won per month(limited insurance coverage) will be provided to the university for students.
-Special fund for students proficient in Korean language (TOPIK level 5 or 6) : 100,000 won per month(Commencing from the main program)

9. Selection Procedure
o “KGSP Guidelines for the Year 2010″ including the application form will be on at the website of NIIED, GKS.(www.gks.go.kr), the Korean Embassy (Consulate), and domestic universities.
o For applicants recommended by the Korean Embassy (Consulate)
- Korean Embassy (Consulate) may recommend 1.5 times their quota to NIIED
- Evaluation on the applicant’s eligibility by NIIED
- NIIED entrusts the applicants to the desired universities (in order of choice)
o For applicants recommended by domestic universities
-Each designated domestic university can recommend up to 15 candidates (3 per country)
-Special selection committee will evaluate the candidates.
-In regards to candidates, NIIED will refer to the Korean Embassy (Consulate) for eligibility when needed.
o For overseas Korean adoptees
- Recommendation by Korean Embassy (Consulate) or Adoption Associations in Korea
- Evaluation on the applicant’s eligibility by NIIED
- NIIED entrusts the applicants to the desired universities (in order of choice)
- Special selection committee will make the final decision.

- Applicants who don’t hold a diploma may submit a certificate or letter of expected graduation.
- Applicants must accurately fill out the health checklist based on truth. All successful applicants must take a medical exam in Korea (including an HIV and TBPE drug test) in accordance with the requirements of the Korea Immigration Service and the KGSP program. If the results show that the applicant is unfit to be a KGSP student, all costs for departure to their own country will be borne by the KGSP applicant.
- Applicants may submit the copies of published papers, if available.
- Applicants may submit the copies of awards, if available.
* Applicants must submit all the documents by check list order. (Check list for the application documents should be the front page with the stapled documents followed.)
- Applicants who are currently studying in Korea or graduated from Korean university must submit one recommendation letter of the head of department of the relevant university.
* No Student is allowed to transfer school during the entire period of program once he/ she enters the school.

This is the 2nd request message from the Office of Academic Affairs.

As I informed you in late April, GSIR will offer the Environmental

Policy Program (EPP) once again from October 2010 to March 2011.

EPP is sponsored by Japan Student Services Organization (JASSO) and all EPP participants will be granted the JASSO scholarship (a round trip airfare, monthly stipend of 130,000 yen, etc). We are inviting applications from 9 ASEAN countries and as the application deadline is approaching I am receiving applications every day. However, unfortunately, I have not received any applications from Indonesia so far.

If you know some graduate students in Indonesia who are interested in studying in Japan, have good command of English with good academic performance, please introduce this great opportunity to them. Please note that a graduate student who will graduate from the current program before March 2011 is not eligible to apply for the EPP. Only those who will return to their home universities after the completion of EPP can apply for the program.

ASSISTANT POSITIONS in STATISTICS/ECONOMETRICS

are announced at the Institute of Statistics, Faculty of Economics, University of Neuchâtel.

The Institute of Statistics of the Faculty of Economics of the University of Neuchâtel expects to open up to two assistant positions (for a total of up to 150% working time) starting in August 2010. The successful candidates are expected to enroll in and begin working towards a Ph. D. degree in Statistics at the University of Neuchâtel. The possible topics of the thesis cover theoretical and/or empirical methods in statistics and econometrics related to the areas of expertise of the department.

The Faculty of Economics of the University of Neuchâtel, has around 400 students, over 30 full professors and guest teachers, 20 lecturers, and about 30 teaching and research assistants.

The Institute of Statistics, one of the seven institutes that constitute the Faculty, gives bachelor and graduate courses included in the university degree programs in economics, mathematics, management, social sciences, labor psychology, and informatics. Moreover, the Institute of Statistics offers a master program in statistics. The research interests of the faculty include sampling, estimation in finite populations, public statistics, extreme values, time series, statistical methods applied to finance and macroeconomics.

Ideally located at the heart of Europe (halfway between Zürich and Geneva), Neuchâtel offers its residents an exceptional quality of life and is an ideal place for study and high-level research work.

QUALIFICATIONS AND ASSESSMENT GROUNDS FOR APPOINTMENT

The applicants should
· have a Bachelor and Master degrees in statistics, mathematics (with some knowledge of economics), economics or finance (with a strong mathematical background), or related fields,
· be willing to start working on a Ph. D. thesis in the fields of statistics or econometrics at the University of Neuchâtel,
· poses a high level of independence, intellectual openness, creativity and scientific curiosity,
· be interested in doing research, be motivated to study, understand and finally master possibly complicated technical problems, be willing to neatly write up the results,
· poses strong quantitative skills, good knowledge of probability and statistics/econometrics,
· be interested in teaching and willing to perform to a high level in the didactic duties,
· have good knowledge of both French and English,

JOB DESCRIPTION

The assistants will be employed on a fixed-term contract and will be active in the Institute of Statistics, University of Neuchâtel for the full duration of this position

The successful candidate is expected to conduct research towards the completion of a Ph. D. Thesis.
They will function as a teaching assistant for bachelor and master level courses and expected to interact with the students and to assist them in their learning effort. The teaching is both in French and English.

The assistant will also play an active role in the department. She/he is expected to interact with other researchers in the school, to participate in department’s activities, to contribute to the scientific life of the department by attending seminars, conferences, taking part in organizing of scientific events, supervising undergraduate/graduate theses within her/his research area, etc.

The position offers also the possibility for close academic collaboration with the other institutes and departments of the university (in particular with the Institutes of financial analysis, information management, and economic research, and the department of mathematics), as well as relevant departments of the Universities of Geneva and Lausanne (these last ones in the frame of the collaboration agreement “Triangle d’Azur”).

Through its scholarship scheme, OFID aims to help highly motivated, highly-driven individuals overcome one of the biggest challenges to their careers – the cost of graduate studies. A graduate studentship is available for up to four years to work under the direction of Professor Andrew Fowler on problems associated with the growth of biofilms in industrial and environmental situations. Job description
The position is part of the research project `The power of constructive proofs`, which is a five year project on proof theory and constructive mathematics funded by the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research.

Constructive mathematics is the part of mathematics that is concerned with explicit constructions. Research in this area roughly falls into two categories: the development of mathematics according to constructive principles, and the study of constructive theories in general. This project falls in the second category, although the areas are not strictly separated and there is much interaction between them: principles of constructive theories are used in constructive mathematics, and conversely increasing knowledge of what can and cannot be done constructively leads to meta-mathematical insights.

This project focuses on the structure of constructive proofs. Constructive proofs appear everywhere in mathematics, and, because of their computational content, are increasingly relevant in this era of computing. The project aims to find and explain the characteristics of such proofs. It thus approaches constructive mathematics from the proof-theoretic point of view, and tries to establish which and in which way properties of proofs, such as for example skolemization and unification, change when moving from a classical to a constructive context.

This is a project in proof theory and constructive mathematics. These are lively research areas, with connections to almost all other areas in mathematical logic. They consist of a wide range of topics, techniques, and directions of research, and therefore provide a good environment for the start of a scientific career.

Qualifications
We are looking for a talented and dedicated student with a MSc or equivalent degree in mathematics or computer science. The research carried out in the project belongs to the field of mathematical logic, and the applicant should preferably have a background in this field. Fluency in English is required.

Terms of employment
We offer a full-time PhD position, consisting of an initial period of 18 months which, after a satisfactory first year, will be extended with 30 months (4 years in total) with a gross monthly salary starting at € 2,042.- per month in the first year ending at € 2,612.- in the fourth year (1,0 fte).

Research project: Photoinscription of photonic structures by spatio-temporally tailored ultrafast laser radiation

The `Optics and Photonics` department at the Laboratoire Hubert Curien, CNRS UMR 5516, Saint Etienne, France is currently seeking a doctoral candidate for its research activities. Applications are invited for a doctoral position in laser-assisted transformation of materials on micro- and nano- scales for optical applications that may open in November 2010. The position is limited to three years.

Environment
Hubert Curien Laboratory is a mixed research unit, jointly run by the `Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique - CNRS` and the Jean Monnet University. The proposed subject is at the interface between two main research axes of the `Optics and Photonics` department; laser-matter interaction and micro/nanostructuring. The Ultrafast laser platform located at the Hubert Curien Laboratory hosts state-of-the-art equipment for beam engineering, laser processing, and process characterization.

Project
The proposed subject involves the development and employment of automated and reconfigurable spatio-temporal laser irradiation techniques for functionalization of bulk optical materials and nonlinear photoinscription of complex photonics structures. Overcoming limitations of standard techniques, the objective is to design user-defined structural modifications in band-gap materials with predictable optical properties by taking advantage of adaptive irradiation systems and intelligent control loops. This serves for fabricating complex 3D optical instrumentation in emerging fields, e.g. integrated infrared optics for astrophotonics using engineered ultrashort laser pulses. Within this context, adaptive optics permits spatio-temporal design of laser pulses and facilitates self-improving control on structural transitions in materials by regulating the energy feed-through, with effect on refractive index changes. The dynamic control over the energy delivery allows a significant upgrade in the quality of the laser-induced structures and enables precise refractive index engineering, delivering in turn new insights on the interaction mechanisms. The technique puts forward two perspectives: engineering aspect, using the potential of designing excitation geometry, and phenomenological aspect, related to controlling of physical phenomena. A specific accent is put on developing vectorial beam engineering concepts that allows flexible, parallel, error-free 3D processing of the optical materials.

Job description
The requested position includes as tasks the development of real-time imaging and spectroscopic methods to observe the progress of laser-induced modifications in transparent materials, as well as the analysis of the excitation/relaxation events on short spatial and temporal scales. The question of controlling the subsequent material modifications using adaptive pulse spatio-temporal manipulation methods will be addressed. This knowledge will be used for fabricating 3D devices with optical functionalities.

We are looking for candidates with the following profile. Candidates should have a MSc degree in physics or engineering, and show interest for interdisciplinary work in the field of laser-material interactions. The application should be supported by sound academic records and recommendation letters. Expertise is required in the following areas: ultrafast laser- material interactions, condensed matter, microscopy, solid-state physics, spectroscopy, ultrafast optics, linear and nonlinear optics, laser-induced ultrafast phenomena, photonics. Programming skills and a good command of English are also required.

The SCG Foundation is pleased to grant up to 6 full scholarships for individuals wishing to study at the Master of Arts Program in International Development Studies (MAIDS) at Chulalongkorn University for the upcoming 2010-2011 academic year.

Please note that in previous years the scholarship was limited to full-time government employees or civil servants, but it is now open to non-governmental workers, students, and other individuals with a background in development, as well as government employees.

3. Scholarship Conditions:

III) SCG Foundation Scholars must not be employed - either part-time or full-time - during their studies/scholarship tenure.

IV) Following graduation, SCG Foundation Scholars are expected to return to work for their home governments for a period of two years.

4. MAIDS Program Admission Requirements:
I) Entry Requirements

- Applicants should possess a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree in the social sciences with a Grade Point Average (GPA) of at least 3.0.

- Applicants should also have 2 years work experience in a related field. Mature students, junior to mid-level government officials with experience in development are encouraged to apply.

II) English Language Requirements

Candidates will be required to demonstrate an acceptable level of language proficiency. Applicants should have achieved an English language score of at least 6.0 on the British Council IELTS, 550 in the paper-based TOEFL, 213 in the computer-based TOEFL, or 550 in CU-TEP (Chulalongkorn University Test of English Proficiency). These three above-mentioned tests are the only ones excepted by Chulalongkorn University. Please also note English tests scores must be less than two years old at the time of application.

Please note that these scores, although a minimum requirement for admission, do not guarantee successful admission or completion of the program. The candidate should feel comfortable writing graduate-level academic essays and participating in class discussions in English.

Two Australian Postgraduate Industry Awards (APAIs), each worth $26,669 per annum (tax free) for three-years, are available for postgraduate research towards the degree of Doctor of Philosophy. In 2008 “la Caixa” Foundation launched a scholarship programme to offer interdisciplinary training and research opportunities to outstanding young graduate students of any nationality to pursue a PhD project at the Spanish National Cancer Research Centre (CNIO).

The “la Caixa”/CNIO international PhD programme offers cross-disciplinary training in state-of-the-art basic and applied cancer research within an international scientific environment. Ten fully funded four year fellowships will be available in 2010. Candidates should have an excellent academic track record, a solid knowledge of English and previous research experience.

akarta, 29 December 2009 — Fujitsu open enrolments of the 2010 Japan-America Institute of Management Science (JAIMS) global leadership management scholarship for Indonesian people.

Achmad S. Sofwan, Chief Operating Officer of Fujitsu Indonesia, said through this scholarship, Fujitsu aims to provide opportunities for all communities in Asia Pacific and to develop leadership capabilities through learning management styles in different culture and understanding global business.

“Until now, there have been 370 business professionals –including from Indonesia- who had earned the Fujitsu scholarship. The scholarship is open in 18 Asia Pacific countries,” Achmad added. “This scholarship is Fujitsu’s contribution to the region, and as an opportunity to develop leadership for business practitioners in Indonesia.”

This year, Fujitsu provides scholarships for a new program in JAIMS: the East-West Leaders Program (EWKLP) which aims to prepare a new generation of business leaders.

Fujitsu will open the registration for application until March 19, 2010, followed by interview in April 2010 and selection of participants in May 2010.

The EWKLP JAIMS Fall Term 2010 will run from October 11, 2010 until January 6, 2011 in Hawaii, U.S. and Tokyo, Japan. EWKLP program combines best practices from east and west with an intensive learning format.

After the lecture in Hawaii, participants will be invited to Japan to participate in various activities related to cultural, visit to Fujitsu and the awarding event.

Angeline Melissa Simanullang, JAIMS EWKLP Spring 2009 alumni, told that all courses were taught by professors who are experts in their fields from east and west scientific traditions.

“This program has given me the in-depth knowledge of global business through the very compact yet practical courses. There were additional special topics, which interestingly gave different perspective of business from non-business related point of view,” she said.

Angeline won the Student’s Choice Award in JAIMS-EWKLP and today is Art Director at MAC909.

Cross-cultural atmosphere, she recalled, were intense in this program as it was attended by students from nine different countries each with their own cultural and professional backgrounds, living and working together.

“As a whole the JAIMS EWKLP experience has brought young people from different countries together, creating a world community, the bond that will hopefully last forever. Through this enriching program, we gained global business knowledge and cross-culture understanding. I believe these are very powerful asset to have for everyone going to succeed in this global world,” Angeline added.

Jessica Schwarze, JAIMS-EWKLP 2005 alumni, told the classes were heavily focused on real case business scenarios that until today are highly applicable to her daily job.

“The lessons I learned during the four months intensive program in Hawaii as well as in Tokyo proved to be priceless. Through this scholarship, I have had the opportunity to engage with people from various cultures and learn the real issues of today’s global business world,” she said. Jessica currently is Head of Marketing at SAP Indonesia.

Fujitsu’s scholarship for this EWKLP JAIMS includes tuition, transportation, health insurance and stipend.

Graduate from all backgrounds, with a minimum GPA of 3.0

1. What do the scholarships offer?

The OSI/FCO Chevening/Royal Holloway University of London Scholarships aim to provide opportunities for independent postgraduate study in the United Kingdom for students who are engaged in or intending to pursue postgraduate work in their own country and who have demonstrated both academic excellence and the potential to become leaders, decision-makers, and opinion formers in their own country. Subject to satisfactory progress, the scholarships lead to the award of a master’s.

Scholarships are available for study in

Each scholarship provides tuition fees at Royal Holloway, University of London, a stipend to cover living costs (for one person only) and return air travel from the scholar’s home country. On completion of the scholarship, scholars will return to their home countries to continue their studies/work there.

2. Who is eligible to apply?

Applicants must:

1. be nationals of, and resident in Pakistan during the academic year in which they apply for the award; applicants who are temporarily out of the country (for a total period of less than three consecutive months) may be treated as being resident;
2. display intellectual ability and leadership potential;
3. already hold (or expect to hold by the time of taking up the award) a degree of an equivalent standard to a good UK second-class Honours degree;
4. have passed an appropriate English language test by the time of taking up the award;
5. have not already received or be currently receiving financial benefit from a previous HMG fully funded Scholarship;
6. return to their home country at the end of their scholarship period to continue their studies / work there.

Sciences Po created the Emile Boutmy scholarship after the founder of Sciences Po (1871) in order to attract the very best international students from outside of the European Union. The Emile Boutmy Scholarship is awarded to top students whose profiles match the admissions priorities of Sciences Po and individual course requirements.

Eligibility requirements

Students from outside of the European Union who have been offered a place to study at undergraduate or Masters level are eligible.

This scholarship is awarded to students with excellent academic credentials and whose profile matches that of their chosen course. Students' financial situations are also taken into account when assessing their applications.

Undergraduate programme: Amount and length of the scholarship

The Emile Boutmy programme can take several different forms for students on the undergraduate programme. The length of the scholarship is always dependent on scholarship recipients' academic results; they must be ranked within the top half of students within their year group.

1. A full tuition grant of 8900€ per year for the first two years of the undergraduate programme, in addition to a grant to cover part of the cost of living of €5000 per year.

Five exceptional Scholarships will be awarded for the 2010 intake.

Scholarship recipients will forfeit their right to the living costs grant if their academic results are not with the top 50% of students within their year group at the end of the first year *.

1. A grant of €8000 per year to cover tuition fees (equivalent to an exemption of 85% of eligible fees) for the three years of the undergraduate programme.

If the academic results of scholarship recipients are not within the upper half of students within their year group at the end of the second semester of the first year, they will receive a warning notifying them that they must improve their results by the end of the first semester of the second year. If by this time, the students' results have not improved and they are not in the upper half of students, they will forfeit their right to the scholarship as from the second semester of the second year.*

If scholarship recipients academic results' place them within the top 10% of students in their year group at the end of their first year of students**, they will be eligible for a grant to cover living costs of €5000 for their second year of students; this will be in addition to the grant covering tuition fees.

2. A grant of €4000 per year to cover tuition fees (equivalent to an exemption of 45% of fees) for the three years of the undergraduate programme.

If the scholarship recipients' academic results are not within the upper half of their year group at the end of the second semester of the first year, they will receive a warning notifying them that they must improve their results by the end of the first semester of the second year. If the student's results have not impr

oved by then and do not place him/her in the upper half of students, they will forfeit their right to the scholarship as from the second semester of the second year.*

If the scholarship recipient is within the top 10% of his year group at the end of the first year**, he/she is eligible for a tuition fees grant of €6000 per year (equivalent to an exemption of approximately 70% of tuition fees) as well as for a grant of €5000 to cover living costs for the second year of study. This comes in addition to the tuition fees grant. Only students having requested this grant will be considered.

During the year abroad (third year of the undergraduate programme):

Scholarship recipients who are among the top 50% of students in their year group at the end of their second year will retain their tuition fee grant during their year abroad.

For those students awarded a grant to cover living costs in their second year, a grant to cover the costs of the stay abroad will be provided if deemed necessary and if the destination justifies.

* For example, in 2007-2009, the average mark required was 13.5/20.

Masters level: Amount and length of the scholarship

Technology (B-IT Research School) is operated by RWTH Aachen University and the University of Bonn in cooperation with the Fraunhofer Institute Center Birlinghoven Castle.

Applications are sought for up to eight Full-Time Doctoral Scholarships to be filled by March 2010, under the following conditions:

Prerequisites
A very good Master degree in Informatics/Computer Science or another field related to the topics of the research school. The research school will also consider a few exceptionally qualified Bachelor graduates with an outstanding track record for a funded scholarship covering an integrated Master-Doctoral program linked to the international Master programs of the Bonn-Aachen International Center for Information Technology (B-IT). Applicants should have a strong background and interest in one of the eight research areas above. Details can be found here.

Scholarship
Scholarship amount is 1.468 Euro per month, tax free. Under certain conditions, increased scholarships are available for candidates with children. Scholarships can be granted for a maximum of three years, with an intermediate evaluation.

The Sensor Middleware Unit

The advent of sensor technologies and the Semantic Web provide the unique opportunity to unify the real and the virtual worlds. It enables the building of very large infrastructures which for the first time facilitate the information- driven real-time integration of the physical world and computers on a global scale. Flexible middleware technology which abstracts from heterogeneous sensor network technologies to higher-level functionalities to enable interconnected sensor networks and processing of sensor data (Sensor Internet) is a cornerstone of enabling Semantic Reality. The sheer size and dynamic of this system poses quite novel and unique challenges, which we plan to investigate in the following years.

We are looking for a PhD student to work in the area of Sensor Data Management, in particular we want to address the challenges of building and maintaining a sensor data repository which is distributed, heterogenous, and constantly updated, and how to efficiently make the data accessible.

Requirements:
- Completed degree in computer science, applied mathematics, or similar, with outstanding performance (Master, or equivalent)
- Experience with implementation work in C++ or Java
- Personal initiative, creativity and ability to effectively work in a team
- Good level of written and spoken English

Basic knowledge of distributed algorithms and database systems, e.g., from corresponding university classes, is welcome, but not mandatory.

Launched in 2009, the OCIS - Oxford Scholarships support British Muslim students as well as those from developing countries in Asia and Africa to read for degrees at the University of Oxford. Under the programme, up to five scholarships each year are available for undergraduate students from Muslim communities in Britain. A further five scholarships are available for postgraduate students, at least two of whom will be UK students from Muslim communities, while the rest will be students from specified countries in Asia or Africa. The scholarships are available to students undertaking study in a range of fields relevant to the needs of Muslim societies.

The Agri-food & Agri-environmental Economics Group of ETH Zurich(www.afee.ethz.ch) invites applications for a Ph.D position.

The successful candidate will implement a research project on the weather insurance design. The project will be financed by SwissNational Science Foundation and an ETHZurich internal PhD-grant. The objective of the project is to enhance the methodology of theweather insurance contract design considering conditions of limited relevance and applicability of historical data. The project will focus on the application of extremal dependence analysis and elaboration of the methodology for the utilization of a priori information available in the form of climate change projections. The project will be conducted based on historical data, climate change projections and results of crop simulation models for Kazakhstan where grain producers are especially prone to risk of drought. The basic requirements are:
• A master degree in Mathematics, Economics, Agricultural Economics;
• Strong background in Probability Theory and quantitative methods;
• Programming skills;
• Good command of spoken and written English;As the project will be implemented in collaboration with the scientists from Russia and Kazakhstan, knowledge of Russian would be an asset but is not a prerequisite.
