Scholarship INFO - For the 2010/2011 academic year, the University of the Arts London is offering postgraduate scholarships for international students (excludes EU students), across our six Colleges. Scholarships will be awarded to international students with the ability and potential to make an exceptional contribution to the art, design, communication or performance worlds. We hope the scholarships will enable talented individuals to realise their full potential through further study at University of the Arts London.

1) Pedagogical and/or Technical Audiology

The research topic “Pedagogical and/or Technical Audiology” is a part of the Department of Scandinavian Studies and Linguistics’ strategic research initiative in audiology. Project proposals should address the perception and/or production of language under various non-optimal auditory conditions, and may focus on one or more of the following topics:

Identification of voices
The consequences of cochlear implants for language acquisition
Linguistic interaction in hearing impaired speakers

2) Media, Citizenship and Rhetoric

The research topic “Media, Citizenship and Rhetoric” is part of the Department of Media, Cognition and Communication’s strategic research initiative regarding cultural mediatization and rhetorical citizenship. Applicants’ projects must focus on at least one of the themes below:

Rhetorical aspects of public discourse in one or more media
Connections between media specific production and organizational conditions and types of communicative interaction
Various media genres’ potential for furthering democratic citizenship

The research topic “Cultural Memory: Aesthetics and Functions” forms part of the strategic research initiatives of “Transmission, Historiography, Cultural Memory” and “Culture and Politics” at the Department of Arts and Cultural Studies. Project proposals must address at least one and preferably more of the following subjects:

Artistic and cultural objects and processes involved in the production of cultural memory
Media, forms and genres contributing to the production of images and ideas of the past
Problems in cultural politics, media theory and history of identity in-volving concepts of cultural memory

The research topic “Primary Sources for the Study of the Scandinavian Languages” is part of a strategic research initiative focusing on modern methods in the analysis of primary sources pertaining to the study of the Scandinavian languages, contemporary as well as historical. The aim of the strategic research initiative is to further the study of the materials in the collections of the Department of Scandinavian Research, preferably as relates to existing projects. Project proposals must focus on at least one of the following topics:

Lexicography
Spoken Danish
Scholarly editing

8) Language Technology

The research topic “Language Technology” is part of the strategic research initiatives of the Centre for Language Technology focusing on methods and tools for creation, annotation and exploitation of language resources, in particular for Danish, but also for other languages. The strategic research initiatives also encompass the field of cognitive science (multimodal corpora and systems) and ontologies of knowledge systems including their contribution to intelligent search algorithms. The multilinguality research area focuses on e.g. machine translation (SMT or RBMT or combinations) and methods for searching multilingual websites. Research proposals must focus on at least one of the following topics:

Language resources and tools (research infrastructure)
Cognitive science
Knowledge systems
Tools for multilinguality

9) The Human Factor in Climate Change

The research topic “The Human Factor in Climate Change” focusing on climate change and its implications on human life is one of the strategic research initiatives of the Faculty of Humanities. Research proposals for this topic are welcome from all fields of the humanities e.g.

Historical or archaeological perspectives on the impact of earlier climate changes on culture and lifestyle
The impact of climate change on lifestyle and cultural barriers or on ethical, religious and philosophical questions
Problems caused by climate change, e.g. migration and social conflict and how these are represented in literature, media and art

Successful applicants will be affiliated to the research group “Research on Climate Change within the Humanities” and affiliated to an appropriate de-partment. Application procedure

Applicants need to hold a two-year Master's degree (120 ECTS) or the equivalent, or expect to receive such by 31 August 2010. Applicants shall have submitted their thesis at the time of application, to the extent the thesis forms part of their Master's programme.

Applicants with a non-Danish Master’s degree will have their degree assessed by The Danish Agency for International Education to establish, if the Master’s degree of the applicant is equivalent to a Danish Master’s degree. Employment as a PhD scholar occurs pursuant to the applicable rules of the Faculty of Humanities, as well as between the Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations (AC). Under this agreement, the PhD fellow is obliged – without further remuneration – to carry out allotted work to an extent corresponding to a total of 840 working hours in the case of a three-year contract.

Scholarship INFO - PhD Studentships for international overseas students with bursaries available against fees.
Projects are available in research groups allied to Biomedical Sciences, Biology, Pharmacy, Optometry and Psychology

Applications are invited for three year Research Studentships to be undertaken in the School of Life and Health Sciences at Aston University to start in July or October 2010.

The School of Life and Health Sciences is equipped with state-of-the-art facilities to pursue cutting-edge research. In the 2008 RAE, 85% of the research in the School of Life and Health Sciences was ranked as being of international quality, and the School was ranked 3rd out of 61 UK University submissions to Allied Health Professions and Studies for quality and volume of research. The School currently has a research income of about L8m, with approximately 75 research students, (part time and full-time), who are registered in the School each year.

Financial Support
The projects are available to students meeting the University and School academic entry requirements and bursaries for international students will be awarded competitively on merit. The bursaries for international students will cover payment of L6,000 against the international fee of L12,650 per annum.

Application Requirements
• Applicants should have or expect a good honours degree (either first class or upper second class) or hold an MSc in a relevant discipline.
• The English Language requirements are a minimum score of 620 (260 minimum in computer test) in TOEFL OR IELTS with minimum marks of 6.5 in each section and an overall band of 7.0.
• The studentships are for 3 years, subject to a satisfactory progress review at the end of the first year, and are available for July 1st and October 1st 2010 registration.
