How To Setup mcThings Platform With mcModule To Track Temperature/Voltage Via Losant Dashboard

The exciting part of any IoT solution is tinkering with the hardware and software and make it work! On this part 2, I'm setting up the mcThings platform to gather up information and stream it live via a IoT cloud dashboard application such as +LosantHQ

In order to integrate mcThings with Losant to read temperature and voltage data, you need at least a mcModule, a mcDongle, a mcGateway, a USB stick, coin cell CR2032 batteries, two micro USB data/power cables and mc-Studio IDE software (free to download).

The USB stick is needed for updating the application processor of the mcGateway; while the micro USB power/data cables are needed for powering and transferring data, as well as for updating the mcDongle and the mcGateway board. Here are the steps:

1) Sign up with Losant to create an account

2) Create a New Application

3) Create new device

4) Select Start from Scratch

5) Create a Gateway (you can call it any name you like)

6) Create a Peripheral (you can call it any name you like) and then select the name of the Gateway you created in step 5.

7) Download mcStudio from http://ift.tt/2lpfYGN (make sure .NET Framework 4.6.2 is installed on your computer)

8) Connect the mcGateway to your WiFi network. You can do this by using an ethernet cable to connect the mcGateway to your router. You ou can connect also via WPS WiFi pairing, or via the mcStudio IDE.

9) Update firmware for mcModules and mcGateway. Head again to http://ift.tt/2lpfYGN and download these below:

10) Open mcOTA, click "Search Device" and then insert the coin battery in the mcModule. Once the device information appears, click Start Update.

11) Repeat the same process above for updating the mcGateway. You’ll need to update both the host module on the gateway and the application processor. The host is updated using the mcDongle and the mcOTA application and the processor is updated using USB.

When updating the mcGateway's application processor, make sure your USB stick is formatted using FAT32, and place the “mcGw110.bin” file in the USB stick without chaging the name of the file from “mcGw110.bin”

Before inserting the USB stick into the mcGateway board, disconnect the power/data cable from the mcGateway and insert the USB stick. Then, reconnect the power cable and hold down both buttons (RESET and USER SW). The flashing green LED on the mcGateway board will show solid green for a few seconds, indicating the application software is being updated. when the green light starts flashing again, the application processor updating process has completed.

12) Connect the mcGateway to your PC and click Connect Gateway

For Temperature and BatteryVoltage, I enter the following code. You can get the code here

Once the code is entered, Save, Build and Load

13) Now, go to "Device Maintenance and Connection". To get there select Tools -> Devices

Then, connect mcGate110 and select Gateway Config to bring up the GatewayConfigForm and enter the following details:

MQTT Server: broker.losant.com

MQTT Port: 1883

MQTT Username: Your Losant Access Key

MQTT Password: Your Losant Access Secret

MQTT ClientId: This is the Device ID of the gateway you created in Losant.

To obtain the access keys from Losant, go to Applications->Access Keys

14) Once the above is correctly set up, you should be able to refresh and get a Connected message from the Losant dashboard..

15) Now, we are ready to create a widget from the Losant dashboard to visualize the data. In this case, temperature and battery voltage. First, we create a dashboard

Then, select a Block. In my case, I selected GAUGE

Enter the information applicable to you. Choose an Application, Gauge Type, Precision Type, Duration, all can be set how you like. Device IDs / Tags (enter the device module you created). For Label and Attribute you must enter Celcius and Temperature.

To visualize BatteryVoltage, simply enter "Voltage" under label and select "BatteryVoltage" under attribute.

McThings Coin Cell Powered Modular Wireless Sensor System For IoT

McThings stands for Measurement and Control Things and it's a miniature coin cell powered modular wireless sensor system that connects over the Internet and can be controlled without the need of programming.

McThings modular sensor system runs on standard lithium coin batteries and draws very little power, which means no more weekly battery changes! The sensor modules (McModules) can work in sync and you can have have as many as 250 of these McModules, all working in synchrony while connected to the Internet.

McModule 120 are tiny wireless 32-bit ARM processors

The brain of the McThings system is the McGateway, which bridges WiFi to Bluetooth Low Energy allowing the system to run for years on a single coin cell battery.

McModules consume less than 1 microamps in sleep mode so if you were to make the McModule 120 wake up every 10 minutes, a standard CR2032 lithium coin cell battery would be able to power one of these McModules for a cool 50 years!

Once you pair a McModule, the McGateway will store the rules locally in flash so even when power is off the rules won't be erased. You can create any type of rule based on your needs so the possibilities with the McModules are endless.

The McThings wireless sensor system also incorporates a unit called McDongle. The McDongle allows you to easily update the firmware of the McModules and McGateway via Over-The-Air programming.

The McModules can measure pressure, temperature, dust/pollen, fingerprints, light, speed, electrical capacity and other kinds of energies so you can have a McModule 120 behave as a refrigerator door timer or temperature sensor, security light (motion detector), humidity sensor, PIR sensor, touch sensor, multimeter and weather station.

McDongle and McModule 120 are about half the size of a AA battery

As you can see from the picture above, the McThings system is very compact. Each McModule 120 is around an inch long, half an inch wide and half a centimeter thick (including the battery and clip). Now that I know what McThings is, I'll be testing out tomorrow the McThings platform actually works. Stay tuned for Part 2!

Simply stick the included 3M sticky tape on the back of the sensor and stick it anywhere you like. On the back of the Protect Motion Sensor, you'll also see a switch. It is a Tamper Switch designed to alert you should anyone tries to remove the sensor.

Protect Access Sensor

The Protect Access Sensor is designed to be fitted on doors and windows and consists of two parts connected together magnetically. The minute the two parts are detached it will trigger the alarm. The Protect Access Sensor also has a Tamper Switch, just like the Protect Motion Sensor.

To gain an edge on Xbox Live multiplayer, you want a modded controller such as Evil Controllers' Xbox One Master Mod, which does all the mods you could ever want in one single package!

The Evil Controllers' Xbox One Master Mod controller that you see pictured is the Zombie Splatter model which features an adjustable Rapidfire feature that allows you to regulate the rate of fire during gameplay.

The Master Mod Xbox One controller is compatible with first-person shooter games such as Call Of Duty, Battlefield, Titanfall, Destiny, Dead Rising 3, Watch Dogs and Halo.

With the Master Mod Xbox One controller, you get 10 rapidfire shots and 10 additional customizable slots. These slots operate just like Call of Duty classes/loadouts so you get 20 classes in total that you can customize. The first 10 slots (classes) have a fire rate equal that of their class so Slot 4 allows you to fire 4 shots per second. Slot 8 allows you to fire 8 shots per second, so on and so forth.

Autorun: hold left on D-pad, click LS and tap LT to begin running

Dropshot: hold down on D-pad and tap B button (to keep Dropshot active press A. To deactivate press RS)
Automark (only on Gears of War): hold up on D-pad and click LB, to enable (hold up and tap X to disable).

Rapidfire Mod on Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare

To adjust the Rapidfire on the Evil Controller Master Mod, hold up on the D-pad and tap RT for a couple of seconds.Then, tap Up or Down on the D-pad to increase or decrease the rate of fire and press the View button to lock the rate of fire.

To program Fast Reload in Call of Duty and Ghosts, press left on the D-pad and tap X button. Then, select a gun (ameli, LSAT, chain saw, FP6, or tac 12), fire some rounds, press and hold X to reload and release X when a full clip is loaded. The Fast Reload program is complete. To reload a weapon very quickly all you do now is tap X and hold RT.

To enable the Gears of War mod, hold the View button and click RB (do this same sequence to exit Gears of War mod). Once Gears of War mod is enabled, it will also enable Active Reload. To add Active Reload to your equipped weapons press left, down or right on the D-pad during gameplay.

to reset weapon slots to default weapons click View button

To activate Lancer/Hammerburst or Gnasher weapons, hold left or right on D-pad and click LB once for Lancer/Hammerburst and click LB twice for Gnasher. To activate Snub pistol or Boltox pistol, hold down on D-pad and click LB once for Snub pistol and click LB twice for Boltox pistol.

For Boomshot, Longshot and Torquebow, hold left or up on the D-pad and tap Y button once for Boomshot, twice for Longshot and thrice for Torquebow.

To sync to the Xbox One, simply press and hold the Xbox button until it starts blinking and then aim it at the kinect sensor (or press the connect button on the Xbox One).
