Can I tell you how excited I am about this new, yet classic trend for coastal cottage styling? The Fisherman Aesthetic! A little bit rustic, a little bit nautical and pure beach cottage fun. Come explore some of our favorite ideas for creating this welcoming look in your home!

You might even find yourself in your favorite vintage store looking for pieces that pull this look together....

Maybe it's because it's the coastal look that I personally am always gravitating towards in my own home: layers of cozy knit accents with hints of nautical (do NOT go overboard!), navy blue stripes, warm natural rattan furniture pieces, woven jute rugs, vintage sailing models, collected beach treasures and rope textures.

Don't forget a pop of warm red hue too!

Here are a few ideas to bring your look together:

Materials and Textures: Natural materials such as wood, stone, and soft woolen natural fibers are central to this layered look. Incorporating elements like wicker or rattan furnishings also adds depth and authenticity. Friday Fall Cocktail - Apple Butter Old Fashioned

One of our best trips a few years ago on the Central Coast!

Loaded up the Mini Cooper (BEST car for driving on Hwy 1!) and we were ready to roll in just a few hours. An opportune time to take our stemless whale tumblers and try out a new fall cocktail concoction! Rolling into our hotel just as the sun was beginning its descent into the Pacific, we quickly unpacked the ingredients for our Apple Butter Old Fashioned Cocktails and got ready to watch the sky glow over Morro Bay.

Here's what you need - ingredients for one drink:

cinnamon plus coarse sugar for decorating the rim
Apple Slices for Garnish
1/4 cup apple cider
juice from 1/2 of a lemon
dash of orange bitters
1 Tablespoon of Apple Butter (we keep a jar in the fridge at this time of year!)
2 ounces Evan Williams 100 Proof Bourbon (or your choice of Bourbon)
Splash of Ginger Beer to add a little sizzle!

Bar Essentials Needed:

Double Old Fashioned Glasses or Stemless Tumblers

Cocktail Shaker

Measuring Tools

Strainer

Instructions:

1. Mix Cinnamon and Sugar together; then use to rim glasses

2. In an ice filled cocktail shaker, combine the apple cider, lemon juice, orange bitters, apple butter and bourbon. Give it a few shakes to combine well.

3. Strain into your prepared glasses filled with ice. Top with a splash of ginger beer and garnish with cinnamon sprinkled apple slices.

So yum, and absolutely perfect for sharing on a beautiful fall evening with someone you love.

Dungeness Crab Bisque with Cognac

We're right in the middle of Dungeness Crab season here in the San Francisco Bay Area. Such a treat!

Alex (my US Navy son) was here on Veterans Day Weekend and was invited to go crabbing with a bunch of his military fishing buddies. What a great time they all had! Chartering a boat out of Berkley Harbor, they dropped the crab nets out close to the Farallon Islands and managed to easily come home with 10 big Dungeness for each of them. (Lucky us!)

While Alex was here for the holiday weekend, we stuffed ourselves with fresh cracked crab with lemon-butter sauce, and pesto aioli. Of course, we had to have some famous San Francisco sour dough bread too.

Tom and Alex even made a fabulous seafood Paella on our grill, but that's another story for a different day...

But, I did manage to save two crabs in the freezer, and was just waiting until I had some extra time to make dinner an occasion. This past weekend, while Tom watched the San Francisco 49rs play in the Wildcard Playoff Game, I found my Craving for Crab Cookbook, written by my friend Christine Quinn, and thought I would give her Dungeness Crab Bisque Recipe a whirl. It seemed like the ideal recipe to use with crab that had been frozen!

What can I say? This elegant, classic soup is beyond delicious!

Adapted from Craving for Crab - Here's what you will need:

4 Tablespoons of Butter (use unsalted so that you can add salt to taste)
1/2 Cup Chopped Shallots
2 Minced Garlic Clves
2 Tablespoons Flour
2 Cups Chicken Stock
1 Cup Heavy Cream
2 Tablespoons Tomato Paste (I like to keep the "tube" kind handy in my frig)
1 Bay Leaf
1 tsp. kosher salt
1 tsp. dried tarragon
1/8 ground cayenne pepper (or to taste if you like it a little "hotter")
1/4 tsp. smoky Spanish Paprika
1/4 cup Cognac
2 Cups Crabmeat

Garnish:

Sour Cream
Smoked Spanish Paprika

1. Melt the butter in a large deep saucepan over medium-high heat until it foams, then add the shallots. Stir the sautéing shallots and then cover the pan. Reducing the heat to low, cook for three minutes. Then add garlic - cook for 2 more minutes. Then add your flour. Whisk it all in, continuing to cook for about 3 minutes with the shallots and garlic.

2. Slowly add the chicken stock and cream. Stir well, then add the tomato paste, bay leaf, tarragon, salt, cayenne pepper, and paprika.

3. Return the soup to medium-high heat and stir until it boils. Reduce the heat to simmer, stirring occasionally for about 10 minutes. Add cognac (do not skip!) and crab meat. Make sure to reserve a little crab meat to use for garnishing too!

4. Cook for 10 more minutes on low-simmer

5. Serve in large bowls. I personally like using pasta bowls - they look a little more appropriate for a dinner meal! Garnish by adding a spoonful of sour cream in the center, pile on a few crab chunks then finish with a final dusting of smoky Spanish Paprika.

Serve with a green salad, garlic toasts and a buttery Chardonnay and you will instantly impress your guests (or your significant other!) with your gourmet skills.

I am always on the lookout for coastal dinnerware that is meant to last, is beautiful and is actually functional. It's been so frustrating! Coastal Design Tip: Choosing the Right Size Rug

So it's time for an update in your coastal living room, and you have decided to start with an area rug. Great idea - perfect way to start your new re-design! But choosing the right size area rug to fit your furniture and fit your room can sometimes be a little bit tricky. Choosing a size for your living room definitely depends on the room size and arrangement of your furniture, and how you like to direct the flow of traffic in your living space.

Here are a few tips that we hope will make it a little bit easier to choose the right size and dimensions for your space!

1. The Most Popular Sizes for Smaller Living Rooms - All Legs off of the Rug: 5' x 8', 5' x 7.6' or 6' x 9 (for super small spaces - try even a 3' x 5')

In smaller spaces or when you prefer to keep all of the legs of your sofa and chairs off of the rug, these sizes work best. With only a coffee table placed in the center of the rug, this leaves a spacious and airy feel, at the same time creating a cozy complete living room space.

For example create a room arrangement like these examples:

2. Larger Spaces - Only Front Legs on the Rug: Try an 8' x 10' or larger

Most commonly, people choose to put all front legs of their furniture on the rug while leaving the back legs off. An 8’ x 10’ size brings all of your furniture pieces in the room together and creates a complete look. Looks best if your coffee table is larger, or in a square or round shape too. Don't these little furry sea creatures just make you smile?

Tom and I hopped in our new Mini Cooper and drove down to the the Central Coast a few weeks ago. Our California coastal spring has been nothing but windy with sideways rain (ick), and we were trying to escape for our anniversary in search of some sunshine. After two days of rain, wind and fog, the sun peeked out on Sunday morning. Yay!

Tom and I grabbed our coffee cups and walked over to the boardwalk that surrounds the harbor in Morro Bay, then we spied these cute sea otters accompanied by their adorable pups playing in the bay. What a show they put on for us!

Highly recommend Morro Bay for a visit - so much to see and do! Surfing, whale watching tours, fishing, wind surfing, wine tasting, fun boutique shopping, several yummy bakeries and incredible beaches for long walks. I may have come home with a pile of really cool sea glass..

Don't get me started on the HUGE California sea lions that cruise the bay - they are magnificent!

It is absolutely one of our favorite spots on the California Coast! Not a bad spot to spend an anniversary too....

Quinn Sharp - Beach Jewelry Extraordinaire!

Meet my friend and fellow entrepreneur Quinn Sharp; I think her jewelry is absolutely stunning and perfectly made for beach girls like me. (and you!) Quinn creates gorgeous, lightweight carefully hand-crafted pieces that allow the delicate jewels to flash in the sunlight. I promise you will love her jewelry as much as I do!

We both live and work in Half Moon Bay and have both been inspired to create businesses that reflect our lives by ocean, so it was a natural that we became friends. Quinn and I met on Instagram, of all places, and we now try to make a habit of meeting every month or so for "girl boss" talks and coffee (and maybe a few pastries...) in between our crazy business and family schedules. But, seriously, not only is my friend Quinn's handmade jewelry incredible, she is too.

Here's her story:

The beach is where I am most comfortable and feel most at home. Having grown up in the beach cities of Southern California, it's obvious where my love of the ocean began. It is where I go for peace, rejuvenation, and inspiration.

From SoCal, I moved to the Hawaiian Islands and graduated from the University of Hawaii. I met and married my husband who is Active Duty Coast Guard. I have been a Coast Guard wife for 17 years and love our military life experiences and adventures! Being a military family, we constantly move every few years.

Wrap Up at Sunset - Introducing New Cuddle-Worthy Throws

Nicole (one of our fab employees!) took these amazing beach sunset images to show off how soft and cuddly our new Silky Fleece Beach throws are. But the pictures turned out so incredible of our Moss Beach, California location - we had to share them with all of you.

Plus we had a little help from Stella! (our newest model!)

Pics all taken at Fitzgerald Marine Reserve Park - about 25 minutes south of San Francisco on Hwy 1, and about 15 minutes north of Half Moon Bay.

A wonderful protected beach location perfect for exploring tide pools full of urchins, starfish, periwinkles, limpets and so many other tiny sea creatures. If you're lucky, you might even get to catch a glimpse of a harbor seal or a sea lion lounging on the flat rock formations. If you are REALLY lucky, you might even get to see the blows from passing humpback or grey whales!

Still can't believe that we actually get to live here...

Stella was definitely a trouper! And I think she has a new favorite super soft throw to wrap up in when her mom makes her take California sunset pics for us.... lol

Summer Stone Fruit Sangria - Perfect for Parties at the Beach

There is just nothing quite like real summertime nectarines and plums - especially if you are lucky enough to have your own fruit trees or a local farm stand nearby. (we are incredibly blessed to have a wonderful family farm between our house and the ocean!)

Here's what you need for your Summer Stone Fruit Sangria:

1/4 cup Vanilla Simple Syrup

1+ cup sliced Nectarines (we used a combination of white and yellow)

1 cup sliced ripe red/purple plums

1 cup sliced strawberries

1/2 cup Peach Brandy

1 Bottle Sauvignon Blanc (White Wine)

Fresh Mint sprigs for garnish

Place the sliced nectarines, plums and strawberries in a large pitcher. Pour the simple syrup over the fruit, then add the peach brandy and give it a quick stir to meld together. Add the Sauvignon Blanc wine to your pitcher and chill until ready to serve. Chill ideally overnight, but at least 4 hours if you can wait.

Fill your glasses with ice and pour in your sangria, being careful to also spoon in some of the fruit. Garnish with Mint!

A few tips:

1. Don't peel your fruit - adds so much pretty color and no need to waste time peeling

2. Stir carefully so that your fruit does not get "smashed" but can still marinate in the wine and brandy

3. Can also add sparkling water just before serving to give your Sangria a little extra special pop!

Summer Tomato and Avocado Salad

Perfect for summer and absolutely delish! I promise.

We live for summer fresh tomatoes and fresh garden produce at my house and absolutely had to try this recipe that Tom discovered in our most recent issue of Sunset Magazine (highly recommend this magazine by the way!)

Super easy with summer ingredients that are readily available at your local farm stand or at the grocery store. Plus - look how pretty, and elegant this Summer Tomato and Avocado salad is to serve!

Ingredients:

1 sliced large English cucumber or several small Persian cucumbers
2 Medium Heirloom Tomatoes, cut into small wedges
3/4 - 1 pint of colorful cherry tomatoes, cut in half
2 small ripe avocados, cut into thin slices
1/2 cup extra virgin olive oil
1/4 cup soy sauce
1/4 cup rice wine vinegar
2 tsp. sesame seeds
1/4 cup chopped cilantro; leaves and stems included
Kosher Salt

1. Layer larger tomato wedges and cucumber on a serving platter. Then layer on smaller halfed cherry tomatoes, followed by avocado slices

2. Mix together olive oil, soy sauce and rice wine vinegar until well blended and then drizzle over salad

3. Sprinkle sesame seeds and cilantro on top to give your pretty salad a gorgeous finishing touch!

4. Add Kosher salt to taste (might not need any)

You will most definitely will impress your beach home guests with your "culinary" skills!
