As I look back over my blog entries I concede that it may appear we favour Olympus over anything else. That really is not the case, it's just that, well, Olympus are doing things that excite us. Lets face it, a camera is a camera is a camera. Frankly I'd rather be talking about a Rickenbacker 4003 in black with white binding & scratch plate and that's dream I'll hang on to. But the new Olympus Pen E-P1 will be my next camera.
I love the Micro 4 Thirds concept and I love what Olympus have come up with. With classic retro styling and 21st century digital know-how Olympus have created what I anticipate will be an award winning camera. This will be every travellers number one choice.
The image quality of an SLR camera (interchangeable lenses and 12.3 MPx) and the convenience of a compact camera.
The E-P1 body design is based on Olympus' famous & successful PEN series rangefinder cameras dating back to the 60's. The look and feel of this camera is stunning. The results are breath taking.

How cool is this!
I was doing my morning floor walk in the show room this morning and I came across this.

It’s a silicone flanged, quality Diving Mask with a built in 5 MegaPixel camera. This is one of the coolest things I’ve seen in a while. It’s a still camera and also offers VGA 18 frame p/s video.

December Nights

I Love December. There’s just soooo much going on. The nights are balmy, the streets are bustling with joyful folk going about their seasonal business and there are lots of invitations to consider.

Last night I had drinks with a princess.

I was fortunate enough to have been invited to the Grand Opening of the Nintendo, Wii Experience Centre. If you get an opportunity (and in you’re in Melbourne) get yourself down there and have a look around. The Wii Experience Centre is above EB Games in Lower Swanston St. Opposite the City Square. Then come up to Camera Action Camera House and say hello.

What’s this all got to do with Camera Gear, well nothing really except that I was very happy to see the huge number of cameras out and about at last night’s event.

The Roof of Melbourne & the Nikon D90

It was Nikon D90 night last night. All those fortunate early adopters were given personal instruction by the ever entertaining Shelton Muller while we strolled through Melbourne at sun down on our way to a mystery destination.

With a couple of stunning models by our side we took in the awesome low-light capabilities of the D90 and saw the amazing advantages of wireless multi flash.

We then wound up on the roof of Melbourne at the Rialto towers 360 degree observation deck. Damn if one of our players finds himself back at work at the end of the day. (He works in Rialto Towers, some mystery.)

Well here it is, and how cool is it.
This is one of those cases when, on paper it looks kinda cool, it's not till you see it the flesh that you realise it REALLY is cool.
It was quite a simple idea. Create a DSLR camera body as small as necessary based on the fact that the sensor doesn't need all that space simply 'cause the lens mount is a relic from the 35mm days.
I love to travel and I love to take photos. But I loathe traveling with my camera gear.

The Panasonic G1 is awesome.
It's tiny, but the grip is so designed that in the hand the camera's not lost. (Fear one belayed). Though, with an adapter, all your current Olympus Sigma & Panasonic 4/3rds lenses will fit, the super compact Panasonic 14-45 & 45-200 lenses are a perfect combination with the G1. (Impressed). The all electronic View-finder was a surprise. Bright & excellent contrast, with advantages we've become use to on only in compact cameras, such as face detection and focus point indicators. (Fear two belayed). The screen on the rear of the camera is extremely well thought out also. A big swivel screen that folds away when you don't need it.

I can't wait to get the G1 into my kit. The traveling-light dream is becoming reality.

I had a really good time and you guys put on a great show much better than (the other guy’s). Actually having someone like Shelton who got to use the camera in real life and not just a company rep telling me something I already knew was really interesting. Imported beer was a great touch of class too which impressed me. ; )

Micro FourThirds gains Momentum

A lot of the amazing features that have made Panasonic compact cameras so popular are incorporated in to the G1. Such as Panasonics iA (Intelligent Auto) mode. iA will detect the shooting conditions and adjust the camera accordingly. MEGA O.I.S Gyro-sensors detect handshake and thereby shifts the lens system to compensate.
The G1’s compact size can be attributed to the new, smaller lens mount and to its electronic full-time Live View Finder, as opposed to a conventional optical viewfinder. The electronic Live View Finder, with an impressive and high-resolution 1,440,000-dot equivalent, allows the user to shoot the exact image the camera sees while also displaying information about the camera’s settings through the view finder. The G1 also features a clever built-in eye sensor, so the camera can detect when the user is nearing the view finder and automatically switches off the LCD, thus conserving battery life. Furthermore, the Live View Finder has a large 1.4x (0.7x on a 35mm equivalent) magnification and when using the G1 in manual focus mode, the frame in the view finder or LCD will enlarge by 5x or 10x (can adjust using the dial).

The new Micro Four Thirds mount in no way compromises picture quality as the imaging sensor is the same dimensions as the standard Four Thirds system.

Photokina 2008 is just around the corner.
The Photo Industry’s bi-annual trade-show, much anticipated by industry members, gets underway toward the end of September.
With the usually touted plethora of new releases, hot products and innovations, CameraAction will have our own man on the ground to sort it out. We’ll be reporting back daily with what’s hot and with what’s not.

Some of the promises.
I’m looking forward to the release of the Olympus Micro FourThirds range. We already know about the Nikon D90 and the Canon 5D? (mk III?, 7D?, Eclipse?, evolution?), new lens ranges, I’m sure Sony will take this opportunity to release a new MemoryStick with a new set of consonants for a name.

Our spicy, siesta loving friends over at Engadget Spanish just nabbed a hands-on with Hama's iPod nano 4G case on the floor of IFA. The tip came in anonymously about an hour ago and sure enough, there it is, buried in a mountain of iPod accessories and sharing the same smooth arc of the Kevin Rose nano -- as it will from henceforth be known.
