"I wish the local bands would have been half as good as Black Hole Kids when I was in Birmingham in the early 90s. BHK play fast as shit hardcore mixed with some post punkish harmonic chord breakdowns that do not sound trite or tired as that statement may lead you to believe. The vocals are blown out and pissed and they sorta remind me oddly of early FYP minus the bratty quality. It's good to know that people are keeping it real and holding shit down in AL. Thumbs up! I Just Don't Feel the Same Anymore

The I Don't Want to Be Ashamed Anymore cassette compilation is being duplicated currently and will be released on June 18th. The cassette compiles bands featuring Tripp Norris, a regular of the Birmingham hardcore punk and noise scene since the early 2000s, who we lost in late February. His presence is sorely missed by those of us that were close to him. The cassette will be a limited pressing of 100 copies on red tapes, housed in hand folded cardstock covers, and is being released in conjunction with the zine Sing Me Back Home, which is a large sampling of Tripp's writing. Money from the project is being used to raise funds for Scrollworks, a local non profit that provides free music education to underprivigeled children in Birmingham.

My review of this was cut out of this months Razorcake (but several others are in the magazine written by me, check it out), so here is the long version.

Arts are one of the best kept secrets in a genre that prides itself in it’s ability to remain clandestine. From the opening song on their debut LP, “Sword Blood Dripping on the Death Shadow”, the record is a disturbing battery of noise. The blazing riffs lend themselves more to 90s hardcore than they do black metal, and the production aesthetic, while rough, is much cleaner than most BM releases.

The speed and agility of the band to play off each other through the changes in tempo is engrossing, but the recording has a sense of urgency and drama derived from the loose structure of the songs. When the band hits the midterm dirge of “Astral Pathways Channeled Over a Purified Lake”, the recording feels like it’s going to fall apart at any moment, and it does fall hard into a remission before a quick 4 count on dead strings and bombarding the listener with “Funeral Shrill of Adonej”, which features a raunchy, deadly VENOM inspired chorus riff.

The violin that opens the B side is legitimately creepy, as is the noise outro of “The Magus”. The noise and feedback give the sound a dated feel, but lend credibility to mood. The vocals are a constant shriek of indiscernible syllables and the liner notes come across as heavy handed, but this is isn’t campy like Price’s “House on Haunted Hill”. It’s more wryly aware and still subtly violent like “I Bury the Living”.

The artwork comes printed on a four corner fold-over sleeve that covers the LP, inside a printed inner jacket. The record is out of print through Youth Attack, but available from Dr. Strange, Interpunk, Reckless, and many other on line distros.

Composure and Poise

After a dozen delays, the new Korova cassette is finally finished. The master has been sent to the factory to be duplicated and the artwork is in (the artwork was drawn by Geoff of Karoshi). It is a pro-printed cassette tape limited to 200 copies (100 from us available in the US and 100 available in Europe with different cover art from Bruised Knuckles Records). Four new songs of noise and power in the (lack of) tradition inspired by late 80s and 90s hardcore punk. The thick, raw sound is augmented by layered samples and circuit bent analog instruments, and the music was recorded on a cassette four track in our warehouse practice space during times of extreme heat and intermittent rain storms. Lyrics deal with Southern Religion and underhanded "punk" business practices. The B side is ten minutes of live audio recorded at Magic City Wholesale during a show with Rational Animals and Vile Intent, which contains several old songs and an Infest cover.

The tape will available from us from our Bandcamp page, and will include a digital download of all the songs. You can opt just to purchase the songs in a digital format for however much you feel like paying. Money made from this will go towards recording.

The latest in my posts of brain pummeling grind, this time spread out across the the entire US. Sunnyvale, California's Godstomper are a bass/drum duo that are one of the few truly great bands that will upset your friends within 10 seconds of dropping the needle, but their side of this isn't why I'm posting it. I'm a fan, but in the next few days I'll post another record that will really explain why. I am posting this because of the Green Beret side. One of the most under-rated and creative bands from the late 90s grind/powerviolence scene, this Tuscaloosa, Alabama outfit were always going at 110% regardless of what speed they were playing. A collection of their singles was released in Europe of a couple of years ago, and there's also a full length CD floating around somewhere. Get on it, it will make your head hurt.

I haven't updated in some time due to a lot of person stuff going on. I have some records to rip that I'll be posting soon.

In Korova news, we are currently writing songs for a new demo that will be released in June. It will a limited edition of 50 copies (we're broke and nobody's going to buy this thing, anyway) that will consist of all new material save for a couple of re-recordings of songs that have changed with the new line-up. I will update this blog, as well as our MySpace page with more information as it becomes available. I will also be sending out e-mail updates since they're the big thing to do now. Please e-mail i_hate_you_too[at]hotmail[dot]com to be added to "the list", so to speak.

Our previous efforts, including a 7" released in 2007, is almost gone from everywhere. Relapse still have a couple of copies, as well as Interpunk. I thought we ran out a long time ago, but I found two boxes that were lost in a move and we now have 50 copies available without covers or liner-notes. I've screen printed covers for them and they're being sold at shows. I think there are like three of the Siege rip-off shirts left. Our 13 song CD, Another Happy Customer is available from Robotic Empire, Interpunk, and Relapse Records, but is almost gone. If you buy it from those distros (which I encourage), you aren't really helping us out much, but you are helping places that help and cater to DIY punk and hardcore. I fixed my record player myself, no thanks to those total assholes at Numark. I bought the thing April of last year and when I e-mailed technical support they informed me it was "out of warranty" (after less than A YEAR), but were really helpful in recommending two repair shops I could take it to. One was in New Jersey and the other one was in Southern California. I'm in Birmingham, Alabama. Thanks, guys.

Insect Warfare-At War With Grindcore

I basically started this blog because people I know that aren't really friends of mine are asking me to borrow records and I don't want to let them because I know they'll scratch them or lose them or something. Also, because I want you to send me your records for free, but that's a different story.

Anyway, people are always asking about Insect Warfare because I guess they're "the" grind band of the last few years. They're good but their early records aren't really amazing. I like it enough, I just question the hype. Whatever. The record is good and it's out of print. 625 Thrashcore put this out and there are probably 1,000 of them.

Most Likely to Succeed

MK-Ultra are one of the most under rated hardcore bands from the 90s. Or from ever. I know that's kind of a heavy statement and I'm sorta' known for using hyperbole, but in this case you need to take my word for it. They might not get the attention and reverence of their Chicago hardcore peers Charles Bronson and Los Crudos -- and MK-Ultra were admittedly less prolific than both -- but they were at least as good as either. And for the time being, they're the only band of the three that now has a proper "best of" properly committed to vinyl.

This is a semi-discography, and the liner notes state that "some songs have been left off on purpose". The full running time is still an epic 55 songs plus a live set and there's not a sleeper in the bunch. The chronology is backwards, so you get to hear the band stumble backwards from the more precise-sounding Midwestern power violence sound they had in their later days to the heavier, East Coast influenced punk that pushed them from the start. Both sounds have their own unique things to offer, but I like the earlier material best. Towards the end they did get a little too close to Charles Bronson, but I'm sure the shift to Ebro (a member of Bronson and Crudos) on drums accounted for a lot of that.

The tracks from the demo and first 7" are a lot more influenced by Born Against, who the band toured with several years ago. The band also mentions trying to sound like Rorschach on "This Town is Killing Me" from the 49th Parallel compilation. Something about this era of the band just sounds better. It's more unique, I guess. The whole record works well, though, and the packaging is top notch. It's a great gatefold sleeve with a massive pro printed booklet with photos and copies of original inserts from the records. I guess the label is down to the last few copies, so it's probably in your best interest to jump on this before it's gone and you miss out on the most complete documentation on a great band that is regrettably lost to time otherwise.

My copy of this is on white vinyl. I don't know if that's a first pressing or what. It was sent to me by my friend Gary -- the original drummer in the band -- who I am lucky enough to have been in a band with a while back, between stints with Korova. He can still play fast as hell and whenever I think of him the first thing that comes to mind is the time we played with Harm's Way at some coffee shop and we got really drunk and he told some story about how he won't go to record shows anymore because he got thrown out of one for smashing Skrewdriver albums on tables in like 1992. I told him I would have bought those and he goes "Yeah, you would" and hit me. He also wrote the main riff in the song "Worker vs. Parasite" from MK Ultra's split with Seein' Red. When I mentioned to one of the other members of MK Ultra that our current band had taken the riff, he told me that the riff was called "The Cihak Stomp", which I see they correctly credited in the liner notes.

Anyway, I don't want this to be all "this band needs no introduction", but I'm sort of at a loss. Buy this, you won't regret it.

I'm going to make this post even though I'm in a shitty mood because I have no money and my record player broke when I was ripping this record.

Korova hasn't played a show in Birmingham since April of last year. We actually haven't played a show at all since we played with Dr. Know in Nashville last June. All the other bands are locals who play more (except the Barker/Jacks Experiment, which I think is a one-off gig). This show is a benefit for our friend Tina. She is a single mom who works two jobs, including being a promoter at Bottletree. She's the one responsible for bringing bands like Torche and Young Widows through Birmingham. She is totally no bullshit and is punk and DIY as fuck.

A few weeks ago she came home to find her house broken into and literally everything missing except furniture. We're just doing our part to help her cover her losses and get back on her feet. I know it's not cool to go to shows anymore, but it would be awesome if everybody came out and supported this and played nice and acted posi. This is a long way off but I hope everybody will go ahead and mark this down on their calenders.

Aunt Mary/Man is the Bastard split 7

This is that "famous" Man is the Bastard recording because it has the song "H.S.M.P." which is supposedly the first use of the term "power violence". As with most songs that spawned a completely absurd sub-genre, it's not very good. However, the other eight songs they recorded for their side are pretty good. Aunt Mary are from Finland and their side is one song in five movements and is pretty much just noise. It's sort of like early Anal Cunt I guess. Their side is actually pretty interesting but ~~-- OH NO -- my record player broke while I was ripping it so it's not on here. Whenever I get it fixed/get a new one, I'll post it.~~ Fixed my record player myself and re-upped the file with the Aunt Mary track included.

I'm not really sure about the pressing info. on this. I guess the first pressing was self-released in 1992, but mine is on Deep Six Records, which is from 1996 (on a side note, Deep Six are still around and still putting out great records by bands like Weekend Nachos). It's an orange xeroxed cover and really cool orange marbled vinyl and the poly bag is for a comic book and not a record. Any info. would be appreciated even though I'm not gonna' sell the thing. I just like to know, you know.

I haven't posted anything in several days. I checked site traffic and am still getting 100+ unique hits a day, and I felt like I was letting everyone down.

I've been working a lot and I'm back in school for the first time in a long time. I think I said something about that a couple of weeks ago. Anyway, I've been stressed and I haven't had time to rip anymore records, but I have a stack of about 50 7"s set aside to rip in the next few weeks.

I'm pretty much totally broke, and I'm selling a few records on eBay to make ends meet/afford to take a trip to see my son in Chicago next month. V/A-Southeast Hardcore, Fuck Yeah!
I don't remember the first time I heard this. Probably five or six years ago. I bought it for like two bucks from some online distro because it was all Southeastern bands and I was totally confused. I'd never heard screamo or "emo-violence" or whatever before and I didn't even know what this was supposed to be. The Asshole Parade tracks were awesome to me, but the Eurich song starting this thing off completely blew my head off. Now I'm older and have more "distinguished" tastes and can appreciate it more. The Cavity track is gnarly as shit, and rightly so being that they're members of the almighty Floor.

I love comps that actually promote Southeastern hardcore, and this is no exception even though it's mostly just Florida bands. A couple of them are from the Carolinas as well, but Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, and Tennessee are totally ignored. Oh well. This was on Concurrent records in around 1997. If anybody has any old hardcore on vinyl from the Southeast (ever!), get in touch because I want it. Thanks.

I caught Neil Hamburger's set last night, which I wasn't really looking forward to on account of the fact that I've seen several videos of him doing stand-up live and it never really made an impression on me. Luckily, I was completely taken by surprise by his set. Something just doesn't translate from his live show and the videos you see of him. Go see him on tour, but skip the opening act Daiquiri, a boring one man noise/pop show.

Middle Class-Out of Vogue

I'm sure this has been posted on a million other blogs before but fuck it, I'm doing it now. This is pretty commonly referred to as the very first American hardcore record. It came out of Southern California in 1978 or so. It's not bad, and really does make the line between the Ramones and the Teen Idles a lot more obvious. The first song on the second side ("Situations") is probably my favorite, but "Out of Vogue" is still pretty good. I think I like the artwork better than the music.

Supposedly this band turned into an art rock band and put out a couple of LPs in the 80s.

I decided to throw up two records today since they're both just two song singles, and I've somehow mentioned Born Against in almost every post I've made since I started this back. I think. I don't know. Anyway, both of these bands were from New York in the 90s, which was a pretty awesome time for American hardcore. A lot of bands were taking less cues from the Cro-Mags and more from the second Reagan Youth LP (which, by the way, will always be better than Volume 1) and coming up with a lot of heavy riffs that sounded like 45 RPM hardcore record being played at 33 1/3.

I think they put out something before this. A demo or a flexi or something. I'm just under the impression this was the second document of this band and not the first. Whatever. It's counted as Vermiform Records number "0.5". The A side is a good introduction to the band, with long, rambling lyrics and no real structure. The B side is a fucking top notch cover of "Riding With Mary" by X.

This is members of Rorschach. I sort of have to be in the right mood to listen to this. I like metal influenced hardcore (and vise versa), but this is pretty much just metal. Sure, it came out on Slap a Ham in the 90s, but come on. That is fucking metal. You hear those vocals? Fucking metal. The sludge breakdown at the end of the A side is pretty awesome. The coolest thing is the cover, which was drawn by Clive Barker.

Went out to go see Exene Cervenka and the Dex Romweber Duo last night. I was actually disappointed in both. However, I was really into Izzy Cox, who got thrown on the bill at the last minute. She did a set with just a guitar and a kick drum and had a real vintage hillbilly-esque singing voice. I picked up an album (one of 14 she has released) but haven't had a chance to throw it on yet.

When we got home, my girlfriend and I were pretty drunk. She stepped on a record that had fallen off the shelf and cracked it in half. I thought it was a copy of the Blue Ridge Rangers's "Jambalaya" single (the b side is a pretty boring version of some old gospel song, but their version of the Hank Williams song is actually not awful (though not nearly as good as Ralph Jackson's version)), but she picked it up and goes "Oh, it's just Cat Stevens," which is what I'm going to be saying now in place of something else really dumb and cliched like "Don't sweat the small stuff!" Anyway.

Pretty awesome Albany, NY hardcore from the early 2000s. This came out on Hopscotch Records (who I guess are now called Sound Virus?) in 2002. The cover art is by Sam McPheeters of Born Against/Men's Recovery Project/Wrangler Brutes, who also did the art for a 12" these guys put out that's also really good. They put out two or three more 7"s that I don't have.

The weather is fucking killing my sinuses. I'm sure all the time I spend in bars doesn't help. It's funny that I decided to start writing here again and never have anything to write about.

Taylor Bow-Thin Air 12"

TAYLOR BOW separates themselves from other noise bands by adhering to a strict punk make-up, abandoning the gimmicks a lot of bands in the genre use to distinguish themselves. The "noise" part of this record is just that, "noise" that is merely a by-product of the natural occurrence of sound. The basic instrumentation seems to limit the band, but in their minimalist aesthetic they find themselves. When relying on droning, repeated riffs, they remind me of their shoe gaze inspired peers the HOMOPOLICE or even FUCKED UP, but the focus here is totally different. The album lures the listener into a false sense of security before dropping into split seconds of thrash that appear on songs like "Woke on Midnight". "Massive City Rolling" has an almost black-metal feel, while the band seems to hit their stride during songs like "Pure Now", which falls into a hardcore sound that resembles DICKS-esque structuring, but all the pieces of familiarity eventually (of not immediately) crumble back into the driving, drony sound the band has cultivated. The intentionally lo-fi production creates an abrasive atmosphere most bands only mention in interviews without ever cultivating on record. Tones of the MELVINS or even the VELVET UNDERGROUND are apparent, though all seem like they make-up mere kilobytes of this band‘s sound. It's like late-era BLACK FLAG going back ten years to record with an early incarnation of THE GERMS and being conducted by John Cale.

Apartment 213-Vacancy 7"

Powerviolence from when it was powerful and violent. Everything about this record completely reeks of grit and anguish. There are songs about killing people with power tools. There's a song about John Wayne Gacy. There's a song about the Jonestown cult. Everything just reeks of complete rage and anger. I fucking love it. The liner notes for "Mutilation" reference "(gang vocals)" as part of the lyrics, followed by "(stomping out souls)". Fucking classic.

This came out of the Cleveland area on Dark Empire in 1994-ish (same time/label as the early Integrity stuff) and I think this band is still around. One of the best things about this release (other than the fact that the music makes you want to blow your brains out and they have one of the best samples I've ever heard on a powerviolence record) is the insert advertising Dark Empire releases that says they'll trade rare records and merch for Star Wars toys.

When the Going Gets Weird...

Aerosols-Self Titled LP + 7"

After three amazing singles, Massachusetts's AEROSOLS unleash their debut full-length; a complete assault on the listener and the world on a whole. Lyrically, the band constantly references pain and mental instability, turning depression into a political stance against the system for psychiatric treatment in songs like "Settle for Hell" and "The Weird Turn Pro", which slams Hunter S. Thompson for his suicide. Musically they completely tear apart the listener, though they don't fall into the trap of relying on mere speed to berate their audience. Slower, BLACK FLAG inspired songs like "God Is USA's Terrorist" use dissonant guitar riffs that creep out of the mix reminescent of HIS HERO IS GONE, while in other parts the band sounds more like the under-appreciated ANODYNE. Comparisons to NEGATIVE APPROACH or even NO COMMENT are good, but are too obvious and sell the band short. The tracks run together with a hurried, anxious tone and that never lets up. If CEREMONY were the band that introduced the youngest generation of hardcore to bleak, power violence infused punk, then this band should be the one to blow those kids out of the water.

The Rites-Your Last Rites 7"

I saw these guys a few years ago on tour with Cut the Shit. I guess it was around 2003, but honestly my memory is a little hazy. I think this was their first 7". Everything after this was pretty good, but this will always be the Rites record as far as I'm concerned. This thing is fucking perfect and straddles the line between Black Flag and No Comment really well. It's pretty much a complete tortured mess and great to listen to when it feels like the whole world is against you.

If you don't pay attention to the great Blogged and Quartered blog, you're missing out. This guy was around back when and apparantly was an archivist even in the 80s. He posts exhaustive discographies of bands including out-of-print demos and even live radio shows they did.

Last week he posted a 2xCD he put together compliling the entire INFEST catalog. Everything they did except one demo version of one song because his tape was too fucked up to get a good copy. This thing is an absolute monstrosity and a much needed document of one of the best hardcore bands of all time.

Nazi Dust-Self Titled 7" (Youth Attack)

NAZI DUST came out of Florida a few months ago with a brilliant demo and two tracks on the comp The World Itself is a Bad Dream. Their first 7" (and subsequent tour with FAILURES and AEROSOLS) pushed the band into the territory of national recognition. They take obvious regional influence from past Florida greats like HATED YOUTH and BELCHING PENGUIN, but have a heavier East Coast edge akin to SIEGE. Most of the music is straight forward, 80s inspired hardcore, but it runs the gamut enough to keep things interesting. "Fervor" closes out the A side, featuring a sped-up but still catchy main riff with a gnarly all-noise guitar solo, while "Bad Blood" on next side slows down the chorus to an almost NYHC style chug riff over the only gang vocals on the record. The record is actually chock-full of catchy riffs, some of which come out shredding behind the blur of power chords and breakneck pace of the record. As the first document most people will hear of this band, it works on every level.

Well, it's been over a year since I posted anything on here. Talking about what I've been doing since is pointless. Why? Because I haven't done anything. I'm back in school for the first time in close to five years. I'm cooking at a restaurant/bar/live music venue in Birmingham. I've gotten some things published. Things are OK.

Anyway, so now I've got this record player with a USB port and it's way easier for me to rip records. And I've got an MP3 player to play these things on. I know, I've turned into one of those assholes. I don't want to talk about it. Here's something for your listening pleasure.
V/A-Internationally Pist
This came out in 2003 on Punks Before Profits, which was the label that the bass player from I Object! runs. At one point I used to own everything the label put out, but I've trimmed my records down a lot.

The two I Object! tracks are classic. Their first 7", these songs, and their side of the Forever Youth split 7" are essential 00's hardcore fodder. A lot of the bands on this comp. sound pretty retro considering how much the mid-00s thrash scene prided itself on being "progressive". Honestly, for as much as I was involved with all this stuff 6-7 years ago (and how much I still believe in DIY and love hardcore music), a lot of it seems kind of silly to me now. The Pests tracks are both catchy and fun. The Headless Horsemen from Austrailia are probably the most unique band on the record with their insanely high pitched vocals and use of the cow-bell. I actually really like their songs. These are some of the only Deadfall songs I like at all, and even at that they're not that exciting. Their tracks on Six Weeks's Disturbing the Peace comp. are the best thing they ever did by far. Karnvapen Attack are completely over-rated and I don't really know why people talk about them. The best song is "Ahhhhhhh" by Warsquad. I don't feel like writing something classy right now.

You Don't Want to Bite the Hand That Feeds You

Where to even begin? January 2nd was the last show at Birmingham's original Cave9, one of the only all ages DIY punk venues left in the US. The club is continuing in a new spot and I'm not upset about it because I think it will flourish, but it was kind of an emotional night for all of us that sort of considered it moving out of our childhood home. I wasn't happy about the fact that the line-up that night included only two local bands (Ex Members of the Holy Trinity and Legion) and then something like 8 completely over rated touring "hardcore" bands that couldn't give a shit about the scene here and weren't anywhere nearly as good as what's coming out of this city right now. It just felt like the last night was so irrelevent and got over run by all these outsiders who don't ever support shit that came out and talked about how important that club had always been to them even though they were probably only there like twice a year.

Friday night we practiced in Tuscaloosa and I ended up staying in town because we needed to practice again Saturday (we hadn't done anything over the holidays we've got shows with Lewd Acts and Agnostic Front this month) so I wound up at Egan's for the show that night. Silky Snowflake was fun to watch/hear, and the Necronomikids put on a great set of well crafted neo-surf that is definitely worth the time to check out. The guys are/were in a bunch of bands like Green Beret, The Hell, and Model Citizen. Buy their demo and rejoice.

Kings of Nuthin'-Old Habits Die Hard

I don't even know if this has been released yet. I guess this was recorded in '07 and was supposed to have come out that year but kept getting delayed. Maybe it's already out in Europe and just not the US, I don't know. If not, someone needs to release it because it rules. There are two songs with guest vocals and I fucking hate them, but other than that, it's great (and it's 18 songs so 2 duds are forgivable). Great lyrics, great songs, great band. Why aren't they climbing the charts? Via PunkRockOi.
