First we had email, then webpages, then mobile phone texting, and now blogs. All this reflects a trend whereby the world is becoming more formal in how it communicates. Instead of body language and endless conversations, communication has shifted towards endless words on a screen.

MERITS OF BLOG

The consumer and citizen are potentially better informed and this can only be good for the long-term health of our societies and economies.

Blogs have potential to help the organization develop stronger relationships and brand loyalty with its customers, as they interact with the ‘human face’ of the organization through blogs.

Blogs, in an intranet environment, can be an excellent way of sharing knowledge within the organization.

Blogs can be a positive way of getting feedback, and keeping your finger on the pulse, as readers react to certain pieces, suggest story ideas, etc.

Blogs can build the profile of the writer, showcasing the organization as having talent and expertise.

DEMERITS OF BLOG

Most people don’t have very much to say that’s interesting, and/or are unable to write down their ideas in a compelling and clear manner.

I have often found that the people who have most time to write have least to say, and the people who have most to say don’t have enough time to write it. Thus, the real expertise within the organization lays hidden.

Like practically everything else on the Web, blogs are easy to start and hard to maintain. Writing coherently is one of the most difficult and time-consuming tasks for a human being to undertake. So, far from blogs being a cheap strategy, they are a very expensive one, in that they eat up time. As a result, many blogs are not updated, thus damaging rather than enhancing the reputation of the organization.

Organizations are not democracies. The Web makes many organizations look like disorganizations, with multiple tones and opinions. Contrary to what some might think, the average customer prefers it if the organization they are about to purchase from is at least somewhat coherent.

I have been researching on freelancers for many months, that What are, Why are, How are, and Where are Freelance, Freelancers, or Freelancing. Reading many many articles relating Freelancers, Freelancing etc. and discussing it with many of my elders those who work in businesses and doing jobs. Many times i discussed it on different Forums and other blog and website Communities, where i got many information and lot of feed backs to my small 5-6 lines post about them in different forums and communities.

Here i am describing a little history of freelancers and then some good ranked freelancing sites.

HISTORY

Back in the Middle Ages, a knight was a member of the warrior class of feudal Europe. In those days, fighting was done on horseback with a long pole, known as a lance, which a knight would use to unseat an opponent. An author Walter Scott used the phrase '' free lance'' to describe a medieval mercenary warrior, who had not sworn allegiance to any feudal lord and whose principal weapon was the lance.

Over the years, the word ''Free Lance'' has evolved to denote a unique breed of self employed workers usually writers, designers, programmers and so on, who offer their services to employers without a long term commitment to them, and charging for their services by the hour, day or job. In many instances, these freelancers operate as a one person business. This was a little review on the history of Freelancers by me. In next series i'll describe the freelance, freelancing and freelancers.

Elance.com is one of the biggest and most diverse freelance bidding services. On this website, the number of bids, depending on the type of account, is also restricted. Here, in order to be a provider or a client you need to pass an exam. The Elance.com fee varies from four to six percent, in addition to a small percentage for payment processing.

oDesk

One of the most famous online freelance marketplaces, the job postings here are quite varied. The available filters are quite granular, with project seekers instantly connecting to the kind of jobs they are looking for. Furthermore, the website has its own time keeping software that keeps track of a service provider's time. oDesk takes 10% of the total amount charged for each project.

Because a customer can post jobs here for free, projects are numerous. Users can also post their portfolios to show their skills. To be able to bid for more than ten projects, a monthly fee needs to be paid. However, the website's commissions are high even for platinum members.

Age 107
Death In Aug 2008

Jack A. Weil passed away on August 13, 2008 at the age of 107. The fact he lived to the ripe old age of 107 is impressive. The fact that he was still the chief executive of the company he founded and working 40+ hours a week until his final days is plain old amazing.
In 1946, he formed ROCKMOUNT, a western high fashion clothing retailer that continues to manufacturer it’s shirts in the US after many competitors moved offshore. Achieving historical fame, various accounts state Mr. Weil either invented the modern bolo tie or named it.
His secret to health, wealth and happiness?
“He loved his work.”

Poppy Bridger

Age 84

After working as a PhD chemist for 45 years,

Poppy Bridger, retired at the age of 69 to care for her ailing mother. But her 72nd birthday gift was an opportunity to buy and operate the lab she had worked at. With about $250K in savings, back to work she went!

On any given day, you will find Bridger testing the authenticity of a precious heirloom or analyzing the properties of metal fatigue. To help with the growing work load at the lab, she has subsequently hired her son and daughter to work with her.

She goes to work every day, and at the age of 84 is bringing into the business about $350K annually.

Sylvia Lieberman

Age 91

Sylvia Lieberman became an entrepreneur in fall 2007 when she was 90. This is when she realized her dream of having her first children’s book published. So why not start a company to author and promote the book?

Archibald’’s Swiss Cheese Mountain is an award-winning book about a little mouse with a big heart who teaches children how to reach their big dreams. Not only is she an entrepreneur, but a philanthropic one! A portion of the proceeds goes to two children’s charities.

Despite her age, Sylvia works tirelessly promoting her book at book-signings and readings, TV appearances, radio and print interviews, and even appeared on a float in a parade. And all these efforts increase the amount she donates to charities.

Barbara Miller

Age 74

Being an entrepreneur was never really a consideration in Barbara Miller’s life. After quitting her job in the paper industry after 30 years of service, she assumed she was done. But as she packed her stuff, her former colleagues begged her to start a new business So she performed it.

In January of 1995, Miller opened the doors to Miller Paper Company and started with $300K in savings and 15 employees. Today the business is generating over $7M in annual revenue and has been on D&B’s list of the nation’s fastest growing companies.

Business has not been a walk in the park, to say the least. Miller started her company and was immediately sued by her former employer. A few months later she struggled with ovarian cancer.

Colonel Sanders Harland

Age 90

Died In Dec 1980

The world famous Colonel Sanders launched his business at the age of 65, using his first Social Security check as start up funds. A master of personal branding, Sanders leveraged his honorary “Colonel” title and constantly wore the stereotypical “southern gentleman” white-suit and black tie. The rocket like growth of KFC is now legendary, and prior to his death Colonel Sanders’ restaurant chain had achieved over 6,000 locations with sales of more than $2 billion.

During his entrepreneurial tenure Sanders met with the U.S. Congressional Committee of Aging and spoke against mandatory retirement, highlighting the love for work and the value of wisdom in the work place.

Definitions

It wasn’t much longer then six months ago that I had no idea what these terms were. I understood what XML was because I had read a book about it but I had no idea how it all worked with syndication of content. Just as I learnt how trackbacks work ^[2] by actually using them I did the same with syndication. I also took the time to read the definitions of the terms and as usual theWikipedia ^[3] entries on XML ^[4], RSS ^[5], Web Syndication ^[6] and Web Feed ^[7] are a good place to start.

The Basics

In a nutshell you use RSS (Really Simple Syndication) to syndicate or subscribe to the feed of a website, blog or almost any media content online (not just articles, it can be music, video or almost any digital media). By syndicating you subscribe to the feed of the site which means you do not have to go visit the website to read the latest content. Instead you use feed reading software or a website to read the latest articles. Instead of going to each of your favourite sites individually you can collect all the feeds of the sites (provided they make them available) in one place. The purpose of syndication is to therefore make it more efficient for you to consume your favourite content.
If you are not into the technical side of the Internet you don’t need to know much about XML. It’s basically the formatting language that software and websites use to distribute the content to your feed reader. If you know nothing about HTML then you probably don’t really need to know much about XML either. Just understand that behind syndication is the language XML.
The best way to learn is by practice and example so let me tell you exactly how I use RSS.

Feed Reading Software

At the moment I use RSSOwl ^[8] which is software you install on to your computer. Like all software there is a learning curve to using RSSOwl however once you have subscribed to your first feed it becomes very easy. If you get really stuck try the help menu or check the website out for guidelines.
There are other feed reading software programs out there and a Google search for RSS reader ^[9] will bring up many options. I tried three different programs and stuck with RSSOwl because it was free, light weight and functional for what I wanted. There are prettier and more functional feed readers out there and I’ll leave it up to you to choose your favourite.

Web Based Feed Reading

With a standalone software feed reader like RSSOwl you have to be on the computer you installed the software to in order to have access to your feeds. Because of this limitation many people choose to use a web based feed reader and the most popular is Bloglines ^[10]. Bloglines works much like feed reading software except because it is entirely based on the Internet you can access your syndicated feeds online from any computer connected to the web. You can also share your feeds with other people or search other people’s feed lists to see what is popular.

Subscribing to a Blog

To continue with my example…of course I subscribe to my own feed, the RSS of this blog. At the top right corner you will see an orange RSS link button. To subscribe to my feed all you do is copy and paste that link into feed reading software or a web based reader like bloglines. You may also have to name the feed and strangely enough this feed is called “Entrepreneur’s Journey”. The RSS feed link for this site looks like this – http://feeds.feedburner.com/EntrepreneursJourney ^[11] – and if you click it you will get the XML output of this blog. That’s the stuff I told you about that you don’t really need to understand, but take a look by clicking the link if you are interested. Note that I use a special third party service called FeedBurner ^[12] that adds extra features to my feed output and most importantly it provides me with statistics on how many people subscribe to my blog.
All blogs will have a link which you can subscribe to. It might be called Atom, or RSS, or simply Syndicate, but they all do the same thing. The reason there are so many names is because there are different standards to create web syndication services (much like the old BETA vs VHS video format competition). At the moment it appears that RSS is certainly winning the standards war so you will mostly see the orange RSS links everywhere.

Syndication is for More than Just Blogs

Blogs certainly started the syndication craze but it is well and truly breaking out now. I wouldn’t call it mainstream just yet since not many people know how to use it but most of the big web companies are making subscription feeds available for almost any content. Chances are if you are reading an article from a big site you can subscribe to a feed that distributes those articles. Just look for that RSS symbol.
Besides article distribution a new craze has launched called Podcasting. I’m not going to go into Podcasting in this article since it is a subject that deserves its own article. For the purposes of understanding how Podcasting is related to syndication all you need to know is that a Podcast is an audio show, like radio but usually focused on voice because music is copyrighted. Unless you have the rights to the music you may get into trouble if you broadcast it in a podcast. People use syndication to subscribe to a Podcast audio show which they can listen to on their computer or download to an mp3 player.

The Future

RSS is designed to make your Internet life easier. At the moment it’s worthwhile to become familiar with this technology simply because you are going to be seeing a lot more of it. If you can keep abreast of the technology wave you will have less frustration when using the Internet

This article is for people that have absolutely no idea what a podcast is, how they can use them and why they would want to bother at all.

Before you continue if you have no idea what RSS is I strongly suggest you read this article first – What is RSS and How Do I Use It? ^[1]. RSS forms the distribution method for podcasts and you should have a basic understanding of RSS before you start to play with podcasts.

Definitions
The word “podcasting” is a portmanteau combining the words “broadcasting” and “iPod.” In case you have had your head in the sand recently or don’t keep up with popular technology an iPod ^[2] is a portable music player produced by Apple Computers ^[3]. Apple was lucky/smart enough that their brand was wrapped into a term for a new technology much like the Sony Walkman becoming the popular name for a portable radio/cassette player or inline skates being called “rollerblades”, which is brand name for a company that produced inline skates.
The most popular format of a podcast is MP3. An MP3 is -

Wikipedia: MP3 is a popular digital audio encoding and lossy compression format. It was designed to greatly reduce the amount of data (10:1 compression is common) required to represent audio, yet still sound like a faithful reproduction of the original uncompressed audio to most listeners. In popular usage, MP3 also refers to files of sound or music recordings stored in the MP3 format on computers.

Ahh, right. Some of that definition is quite technical, but all you really need to know is that an MP3 is a popular audio file type for podcasts. There are other audio file types that are used for podcasting but in general as long as you have a music player on your computer you should be able to listen to a podcast file.
Podcasting is a form of audio broadcasting on the Internet. The reason it became linked with the iPod in name was because people download podcasts (audio shows) to listen to on their iPods. However you don’t have to listen to podcasts only on iPods; you can use your computer with some music software such as Windows built-in Media Player ^[4] or my favourite player, Winamp ^[5], or other portable music players (iPod competitors) such asCreative Zen ^[6] or iRiver ^[7]. It really doesn’t matter, as long as you have some way to play music on your computer you will be able to listen to podcasts.

What Makes Podcasting Different?

When I first heard of podcasting I didn’t understand what made it different from simply searching and then downloading a music file and listening to it much like I had been doing for years with MP3 music tracks. I had a knowledge gap because I still didn’t understand RSS and content syndication. After playing with RSS feed readers (which you should know about if you followed my instructions and read my primer article about RSS ^[1] before reading this article) I understood the difference between searching and downloading music files and subscribing to podcasts. It’s all about having the files come to you through syndication instead of you going to the files through search.
You subscribe to podcasts much like you subscribe to blogs. In fact often podcasts are distributed through a blog and provided your feed reading software handles podcasts you should be able to either instruct your reader to download new podcasts whenever they become available or manually choose which podcasts you want to download by clicking a link to the audio file. These files can then be listened to on your computer or you can transfer them to your portable player to listen to later. Some podcast feed reading software are configured to download and transfer the podcast directly to your portable player automatically so you can plug it in and walk away a few minutes later with your latest podcasts downloaded and ready to digest.

A Practical Example – Entrepreneur’s Journey Podcast

This blog, the one you are reading now, has podcasts. You will find a podcast category ^[8] and an audio tab at the top that lead to a listing of all the podcast shows I have created (more on creating podcasts later). Whenever I create a new entry to this blog that includes a podcast (distinguishable because it contains a link to an .mp3 file) podcast reading software will automatically download it or mark the podcast as including an enclosure, which is a method of signifying that a blog post contains some media content.
One of the most common podcast subscribing tools is iTunes ^[9]. If you use iTunes and subscribe to this blog every time I release a new podcast audio show iTunes will download it for you automatically and if you have it synced to your iPod it will transfer it for you as well. This is what I would call true podcasting – automatic download of an audio file directly to an iPod.
My current feedreader, RSSOwl ^[10], handles podcasts a little differently. When RSSOwl reads a blog entry/RSS feed that includes a podcast (MP3 file) it will place a link to the file labelling it an enclosure which I can click to download to my computer to listen to later. I pick and choose which podcasts I download and either listen to them from my computer or manually transfer them to my iRiver portable MP3 player.

Still Confused?

If you are still scratching your head in confusion I suggest you try iTunes and subscribe to this blog – look in the podcast -> business category in iTunes and you should find Entrepreneur’s Journey. ITunes will automatically download the files or you can click to download some of my past shows. Experiential learning is by far the best way to get a grasp of new technology so if you are interested in using podcasts get out there and have a go. It’s all free so you have no excuse.

Podcasting Killed the Radio Star

Podcasts usually contain talk back radio style content rather than music. This is mainly because of copyright law. If you broadcast music you don’t have the rights to use then you are taking a risk. Consequently podcasting has seen the rise of the home-based radio-like personality rather than popstar, with individuals recording talk-back shows from home and distributing to people all over the world. The popular podcast hosts have audiences numbering in the thousands and no doubt soon enough in the millions.
An Internet podcast star can potentially reach a much larger audience than any traditional radio personality ever could. With potential numbers in the millions it’s easy to see why there is so much hype behind the technology and many business folk eager to get behind it. Podcasts and blogs are leading a new content distribution revolution on the web that you are going to hear a lot about in the future.

Timeshifting

Timeshifting is a new term that you might hear now and then associated with podcasts. To time-shift is to consume content when and where you want to, as opposed to live events, for example television, which must be attended at specific times (although inventions like TiVo ^[11] are changing this). Podcasts allow you to listen to audio content whenever it suits you, for example on the train to work. Podcasts are considered to be part of the beginnings of a timeshifting revolution that with digital convergence ^[12] will see all forms of digital media entertainment available on demand and timeshiftable.

Creating Podcasts

One of the big hurdles facing podcasting at the moment is the difficulty everyday Internet users experience creating a podcast. Recording, uploading, hosting and distributing podcasts require some level of technical proficiency that presently is beyond the average web surfer. Going beyond just the basics, to produce a podcast show of radio style quality with music, samples and effects is a daunting task for even experienced Internet users. New companies working to simplify the podcasting process are popping up everyday and many are being heavily backed by venture capitalists so certainly the industry mood is positive and the things will become simpler in time.

Creating Entrepreneur’s Journey Podcast

As I mentioned previously I produce a podcast show for this blog titled Entrepreneur’s Journey Podcast ^[8]. At the moment my podcasts are basic with only my voice recorded. I currently use my iRiver mp3 player which has a recording function to record my voice in WAV format (an uncompressed audio format). I take this recording and transfer it to my computer and then compress it to an mp3 using iTunes (you can right click a file in the iTunes library and choose “convert to MP3″). I then upload the MP3 to the web server that hosts this site and create a new blog entry that links to the MP3.

Podcasting and the Future

Podcasting is the start of a new media content revolution that is empowering individuals with the ability to globally distribute their ideas and create a following of like minded fans. It is impacting traditional industries such as journalism, education and entertainment allowing anyone to freely create and distribute news and media.
And this is only the beginning.
Videocasting, the big brother of podcasting, is the next step allowing individuals to create their own video content for the world to hear AND see. Over time television, radio and the Internet will merge into one channel of content distribution that will provide an unheard of level of personalisation delivered on demand in real time or timeshifted.

Revisited Importance Of Blog Designs

I think it goes without saying that I have some rather
strong opinions when it comes to the importance of
blog design. To understand my reasons for doing so, we
have to first look at the concept of BRAND, then at the
importance of layout.

First, a BRAND is not a logo. It’s not a company’s letter
head, nor is it a sign on a door. A company’s brand exists
in the minds of its staff, customers, suppliers, and
prospects. It’s the sum of the experiences one has with
a company, and the expectation that certain events or
experiences will be met.

A blog is a hugely powerful branding tool. If branding
is important to your company, care must be taken to ensure
your blog and your brand jive. Failing to do so can
seriously jeopardize your existing efforts. Why? Reading
and responding to blogs is a very personal experience.
It’s intimate in a way that reading a newspaper ad isn’t.
It’s an ongoing experience, re-inforced time and again.

So design is important from a brand perspective. But
its also important from a communication perspective.
Non-verbal communications play a massive part of face
to face or voice to voice conversations. In print or on the
web, its up to a layout designer to interpret and support a
writer’s intentions

This is hard enough to do in a magazine with a monthlong
lead time. Trying to accomplish the same thing on
an ever changing blog is tough. But not impossible. Your
investment with your business blog will be significant,
if not in cash then in time. Investing in a good design
shows the world that you are serious about your content
and serious about your business.

Design is ultimately about the way something works, not
about how it looks. The look is part of the package, but is
certainly not the whole. The great majority of your site’s
value will come from its content. With your specific goals
in mind, you need to determine the content hierarchy.

What will go at the top of the page?
What gets secondary billing?
What can you do expose archived content?
What can you do to lead your reader to your desired outcome?

As a blog designer, a lot of my time is spent working out
these details. They’re never the same twice, as no two
sites have identical reasons for being.

There are a number of design options available to you.
These range from full custom design to pre-made templates
to some combination of the two.

Having a professional blog designed will run somewhere
between $1500 and $5000.

Don’t get me wrong. One can achieve blogging greatness
without spending a penny. In my experience, many business
bloggers start out with one of the hosted options.
After determining that blogging makes sense for them,
many make the move to a professionally designed site.

Frankly, this makes a lot of sense. Assuming you do one
simple thing right off the bat. Use your own domain
name. You don’t want to get stuck with a subdomain
from your blogging provider. It will make moving your
blog later a pain in the rear if you fail to do this now.
There are all kinds of other benefits to having your own
domain name. But this one alone is worth it.

How Are Freelancers Differs from Other Self Employed Professionals ?

The term 'Freelancing' is often quite loosely used, which leads to many misintepretations and much confusion regarding its nature. As In The Blog SAMBA, Allan Young, pointed out in a post titled 'Freelancers Vs Entrepreneurs',

Entrepreneurs Concept Differs From Freelancers

Entrepreneurs are people who launch risky and innovative business ventures, in order to pursue new economic opportunities. Meanwhile, Freelancers may lauch their own careers without setting up their own firms, in a Way, this makes freelancing a low risk enterprise, as opposed to entrepreneurship.

Moreover, Entrepreneurs may hire specialists to manage their company's organisational functions, like marketing or finance. Freelancers, on the contrary, tend to act as lone wolves, managing all aspects of their work themselves, including accounting, business development and following up on receipts from clients. Although entrepreneurs may occasionally undertake freelance work, they may never abondon their ventures to become freelancers. Freelancers may also form labels or personal brand identities, but they may not take the entrepreneurial route and unless they are prepared for the risks, they may continue working alone, while coolaborating with their fellows and industry experts, from time to time.

It Is Not Consulting

Consultants are experts, who advise their clients on matters pertaining to their subjects of expertise. Moreover, consultants work as independent advisers, this allows them to provide objective and neutral advice to their clients, by keeping away from the influence of certain factors with in the client's firm. The expertise of consultants is spread across different domains, such as information technology, marketing, finance, law, media, etc.

The job of a consultant is to suggest possible solutions to a specificset of problems, and as an external agent, he or she is generally not responsible for implementing those solutions, it is the client's internal matter. Although consultants are typically associated with consulting firms, some also work as freelancers. However, it is important to understand that freelancers are present in many different professions, and the scope of their work may include other services, besides consulting.

Is It Outsourcing ?

Outsourcing is a process whereby a (client) firm transfers a part or whole of a specific business activity to a vendor which may be a freelancer or another firm in order to allow the client to focus on its core business. Outsourcing is common in many IT-related professions, such as Web Designing, software development, and on call technical support.

Large outsourcing firms typically offer different kinds of products and services, for which they may offen hire freelancers as needed. For Example:- Many Web design firms hire freelance graphics designers to manage the workloads of their in house design teams. The point is that outsourcing may not always require the direct services of freelancers, as some clients tend to prefer outsource service providers. Likewise, the focus of freelancing is not just to provide outsource services, many freelancers also create and sell original works.

Is It A Part Time Job?

Freelancing is often misunderstood as a part time job, which it is not. Part time employees are people who either work on ad- hoc basis, or have other full time obligations. While freelancing could be one possible way to find part time employment, the same may not be the case with freelancers whose (freelance) jobs could be their sole full time obligations.

Summary

If I'll talk about the conclusion of this article, I will conclude that Freelancing is a good work even if you donot know anything about it in the beginning. Then this post also put some of the differences between the Entrepreneurs and Freelancers. I Think this can be very useful article to make good freelancing techniques and knowledge for new freelancers.

I have been a fan of Blogging since August 2009. As I have faced many learning skills, activities in the field of Blogging so I have now been watching that the term microblogging is spreading all around the World as a light speed. Once again I got in the search of MicroBlogging keeping Blogging at another side.

First of all I'll discuss a little about Micro-Blogging and then mention the 9 MicroBlogging tools.

Micro-Blogging

This is how Wikipedia describes:-

A form of blogging that allows users to write brief text updates (usually less than 200 characters) and publish them, either to be viewed by anyone or by a restricted group which can be chosenby the user

Microblogging Is a form of multimedia blogging that allows users to send brief text updates or micromedia such as photos or audio clips and publish them, either to be viewed by anyone or by a restricted group which can be chosen by the user. These messages can be submitted ba a variety of means, including text messaging, instant messaging, Email, digital audio or the web. The content of microblog differs from a traditional blog in that it is typically smaller in actual size and aggregate file size. A single entry could consist of a single sentence or fragment or an image or a brief, ten second video. But, still its purpose is similar to that of a traditional blog. Users do microblogging about particular topics that can range from the simple, such as ' What one is doing at given moment,' to the thematic topics, such as sports cars, to business topics, such as promotion of products. Many Microblogs provide short commentry on a person to person level, share news about a company's products and services, or provide logs of the events of one's life.

Twitter

Twitter is the key player in space and the company name is used synonymously with microblogging. The free service allows users to post status updates via SMS, Email, or Web Browser. What's more. Twitter has an open platform allowing third party developers to build on top of it.

Tumblr

Tumblr is very clean, slick microblogging platform. Its focus is on somplicity and elegance. Similar to Pownce (I'll mention Pownce later), users can share a variety of things, including text photos, quotes, links, chats, or even videos.

MoodMill

MoodMill is a way to express your mood or current state of being. A sliding scale faciliates this process, while a quick text update completes the personalized service.

Pownce

Pownce launched microblogging platform with added functionality. On top of messaging, users can quickly and easily share links, files, or events with any or all of his/her contacts. See Pownce itself for more details

MySay

May say is what it says, instead of text updates, users can call MySay and say how they are doing today. Then, friends or family can listen via phone, Email or the Web.

Hictu

Hictu is a service for video microbloggers. A webcam and a mouse click are all that is needed to create a videopost. This streamlined solution saves time and effort for traditional bloggers.

Frazr

Frazr is also very similar to Twitter. The main difference is one of language. Frazr is focused primarily on the French and German Markets.

IRateMyDay

IRateMyDay allows you the ability to (Yes, you guessed it) rate your day on a scale of 'Worst' to 'Great.' Users can also provide a short text update to accompany the rating.

So these were the 9 Micro-Blogging platform, I know that I have not explained in detail, the reason is all microblogging tools have mostly same type of features.

Image Spam Trends (Part 2)

This Is Part 2 in a series of Image Spams Trends. You can check it's Part 1 - Here. The part 1 of a series describes the latest trend of Image spam but this post will be presenting new trend of image spam.

New Trends

Dynamic Zombie BotNets

Bot Nets Can be defined as

Networks of Compromised Computers which can be controlled by a single master.

The number of Nodes (also known as Zombie) of these botnets can run into millions and these machines make use of different software vulnerabilities to gain full access to the infected hosts and add it to their existing array of Zombies. Computer hackers had long been using botnets to launch DoS (Denial Of service) attacks and distribute network hacking attacks. Computer criminals had also been using botnets for money making schemes, such as stealing credit card information and spamming PPC (Pay Per Click) advertising companies. Seeing huge potential in botnets, spammers started financing hackers to make use of zombie machines. Hackers were able to offer services such as renting of botnets for a few minutes or hours and collections of E-Mail recipients (Spam Lists). The anti-virus industry noticed correlations between the spam industry and botnets. Not only were maleware writers allowing spammers to make use of their creations, but they were writing malicious code to specificially suit their needs. An unholy alliance had been created.

Most anti-spam vendors had added Bayesian filtering to their arsenal of spam blocking methods. The fight between spam and anti-spam looked like it was taking a positive turn. Thhis time the spam started looking more graphic in nature. Spammers began making use of images to bypass text-based content filtering, simply by no longer using any text content. By making use of Image spam, spammers were attacking the defenses of most antispam solutions, while the images displayed text messages to the end users, the antispam software was only able to see pixels. Some email anti spam software decided to go with OCR (Optical Character Recognition) to turn the images into text that the software could then use. However, spammers took their images to next level. In an approach usually applied to CAPTCHA (antispam solution used on web forms/forums), they started fuzzing (including noise and distortions) images to make it even harder for the machine to recognize text. Although it is possible for the machine to read this text, the process is very CPU intensive, especially when it is handling multitudes of images every few seconds.

Blog is composed of two English words "Web" and "log". Which is a website, that keeps track of data in chronological order.

The Word "WebLog" was used first time ever by "John Barger" in 1997. Who owns the website www.robotwisdom.com based on blogs. After that "Peter Merholz" broke the word and had used like
We Blog, from there it was popular as "Blog".

A Website named Xanga, had only 100 Blogs in the Year 1998. But Later in 2005 they were about 20 Million. After that other number of blogging services were introduced. Blogs got popularity like this. Open Diary Blogs first time offered the Comments system on it. Which was very successful attempt.

Live Journal is another Free and Popular blogging service. That supports the function of Private Journal, Blogging, Discussion Boards, Social Network. 2 Billions communtities have been setup from 1999. Live Journal was the first which provided the function of posting through mobile phones.

In the begnning the blogs were only based on written materials but later came across the technology of embedding Video, Podcasts(audio services), Pictures etc. You can say Multimedia Blogging services. Now become a big part of Internet.

Why Do We Blog ?

No doubt, Blogging is considered the most popular and important service of Internet. Millions Of People use to write their own blogs and to read other people's blogs. And this activity is spreading all over the Internet World as polution in the World ;-) Oh sorry! Population in the World. Number of Blogging tools make it easier to do (blogging).

Avoid Debit/Credit Frauds

When a credit/debit card transaction could not be completed online, the credit card company helpline was contacted. It was found that a prior phone-call notice was needed before any transactions. The notice was given on phone as required and the transactions was safely made online. It was a safety precaution to prevent unauthorized transactions.

In another case, a credit/debit card statement shocked someone when they noted that it had mentioned an expensive purchase that they had never made. On being contacted, their bank confirmed amount of a hefty amount a few days back.

The money was never recovered despite much effort and correspondence with the bank and the credit/debit card institution. Happenings of credit/debit card fraud may not be so frequent on any specific country but they are definitely on the rise.

There are many ways thieves use to steal your money through your credit/debit (ATM) cards. For instance, an ATM card skimming device resembling a part of ATM machine can record a video of typing your personal identification number (PIN). A duplicate keypad may be placed over the actual one, recording the sequence of keying in. A cyber crook can pick up vital information through phishing and use it for credit card fraud.

Thieves managed to have their your card jammed in the machine. A helpful stranger approaches and suggests that you try to key in your PIN but the card remains stuck. As you leave, the card is removed. He already has your PIN number.

An unscrupulous clerk swipes the card to record the vital information into a hidden device which allows them to make a duplicate of the card. Your PIN information is recorded at the same time.

The sales clerk uses a bogus PIN pad that copies your card and its information and issues a fake transactions receipt but does not actually pays cash for the purchase and uses the information to take out money from your account.

Observing a few safety precautions can protect you from credit/debit card fraud:

Protect your card, specially your PIN code. Do not share it with anyone. If you suspect someone has discovered your PIN code, change it immediately.
Memorize your PIN. Do not write it on or near your credit/debit card.
Avoid using personal information such as your house phone or phone number or date of birth for you PIN number.
Use your credit/debit card at a familiar place such as a bank branch where the ATM is constantly under surveillance by the bank employees.
Before and during making a withdrawl, keep an eye on your surroundings. If you notice a suspicious activity, leave the place immediately.
Using an ATM during the late hours, choose one that is not isolated and is being used by other people.
Avoid using an ATM with strange protruding attachments. Report to police or the bank authority if you find a suspicious attachment.
Make it a habit to cover the movement of your fingers on the keypad when typing in your PIN number to avoid being recorded on a hidden camera or from intruders.
Closely review your online bank account every week so that you know if a fraudulent withdrawl is made.
Count the cash at the terminal and put it away safely in your pocket or handbag before you move away. Collect the receipt and your card. Never walk away from the ATM with cash in hand.
Report lost or stolen cards as soon as possible you no longer need them.
Tear up your receipts as soon as you no longer need them.
To protect your money, designate a separate credit/debit card for internet shopping to keep track of your online purchases. An ''https'' in a URL address signifies a safe website and you can confidently enter sensitive information. Sites displaying certification symbols such as VERISIGN Trust Seal can also be trusted. You can also ask your credit/debit card company about getting a virtual account number that's good for only one purchase from a specific vendor.

You must notify your bank and the credit/debit card institution as soon as you are aware of a fraud. Keep a detailed written record of the incident. You may be quizzed about the circumstances of the loss to ensure that you had no part in the fraudulent transaction.

Introduction To Spam

Spam is a Abusein Electronic Messaging System.To send unsolicited bulk messages indiscriminately. While the most widely recognized form of spam is E-Mail Spam, The Term is applied to similar abuses in other Media: Instant Messaging Spam, Search Engine Spam, Forum Spam, Social Networking Spam, File Sharing Spam etc.

Spamming remains economically viable because advertisers have no operting costs beyond the management of their mailing liss, and it is difficult to hold senders accountable for their mass mailings. Because the barrier to entry is so low, Spammers are numeous and the volume of unsolicited mail has become very high. The costs, such as lost productivity and fraud, are borne by the public and by Internet Service Providers, which have been the force to add extra capacity to cope with the deluge. Spamming is widely reviled, and has been the subject of legislation in many jurdictions. People who create electronic spam are called Spammers.It is believed that majority of spammers are using Home PCsfor this purpose.

What Is Image Spamming ?

Before We Start To Discuss Trends, We Should Put Some Light on Image Spam.

Image Spamming is a new method of E-Mail Spamming. The Text Is Embedded In Image or Picture files, which most anti-spam software ignore. They are not detected as spam simply because they are pictures and not text. Blocking Image Spam is proving difficult, as images and pictures (whether as attachments or embedded in the body of the message) are an expected part of a person's daily E-Mail intake - for business reasons (e.g, company logos, product shots, electronic newsletters, etc.) or personal purposes (family photos, vacation shots and so on)

I think we have got enough information about Image Spam, so now we should proceed to its latest trends.

The Latest Trends In Image Spamming

Although Spammers Registered considerable success with image spam (picture, right) the anti-spam software industry had not lost the battle and quickly came out with new counter measures to stop image spam. Realizing that filters had a problem with images, the answer was to hit spammers at source- that is where the E-Mail originated from. This new approach had an immediate positive result and considerably decreased the eddectiveness of image spam and gave back to E-Mail users some control over their mailbox. As with every cat and mouse game, spammers had to respond and in June 2007, they came up with a new technique that is not only ingenious but even more problematic than image spam. Instead of Embedding the image with in E-Mail Itself, they "repackaged" it with in an attachment using one of the most common file formats in use today - A PDF File. This move is clever for a number of reasons described below:

E-Mail users 'Expect' spam to be an image or text within the body of the E-Mail and not an attachment.

Since most Business today transfer documents using the PDF format, E-Mail users will have to check each PDF document otherwise they risk losing important documentation.

With most Anti-Spam Software Products on the market geared towards filtering the E-Mail itself and not attachments, spam has a longer shelf life within a network.

An Attachment that is a PDF file has a greater credibility in an E-Mail thus making Social Engineering attacks much easier.

The ability to send large PDF files could result in a single spam attack causing huge bottlenecks on a company's E-Mail Server, reducing the quality and amount of bandwidth available.

By sending PDF attachments, Spammers can also resort to phising by attaching supposedly authentic documents from a Bank or Service Provider.

To use of PDF spam was short lived as anti-spam software vendors quickly came out with updates and filters that analyzed the body of every PDF file. Not tto be defeated, spammers took less then a month to come out with a new option. Microsoft Excel files for push and dump scams. This moves were clever for reasons similar to those above for PDFs.

Excel is another extremely common file type in use and users are very familiar with this format.

Since many Business use Micrsoft's Excel for spreadsheets, databases and so on, E-Mail users will have to check each document otherwise they risk losing important documentation.

Companies that do not use Anti-Spam or Anti-Virus Software on their Network could be easy target for this type of spam.

The Damage that Spam can cause any Business should never be underestimate. Efficiency, Productivity, and Profitability can all take a serious hit if electronic junk E-Mail gains access to inboxes, with valuable time and effort eaten up in identifying and deleting unwanted messages. Spam currently accounts for a staggering 84%approx. for all E-Mails heading to corporate gateways. As Spam filters become more effective Spammers have to adobt new techniques to attempt to out with Anti-Spam defenses and ensure their unsolicited E-Mailsare delivered to their targets. By encoding their messages as an image rather than as plain text, Spammers hope to hide the content of the spam from spam filters. Their reasoning is that only the recipient will be able to view and read the image, spam filters will not be able to understand the content and let the E-Mail pass. Neverthless there are subtle clues hidden within the images which identify them as spam.
