I write this final recap with much joy and sorrow, the end was both a relief and exciting, as it was full of sadness and happiness. And in like so many aspects of LOST it was in complete juxtaposition. The finale was edited with as many cliff-hangers (even literal) as possible; it still managed to fill itself with mystery and emotion to complete the quest of man's struggle to be free.

The season six mystery of The Sideways was explained when it ended with a final twist that answered all questions of its origins. This doesn’t mean there are not other mysteries left unanswered, but as we have known all along, some of the show is left to interpretation and what it will mean to you. The light can represent many things and how important it was to the rest of the world is up to the viewer.

What this episode did was remind us why we loved these characters and gave us the chance to say good bye to them. It also made the unanswered mysteries irrelevant, because in the end, it was not what actually mattered, because it is the same as life, we will never have all the answers. Sometimes though when we let go, we can see what actually matters.

There are bound to be some who will not get it, but for anyone who is a true fan of the show, who has watched and loved for the past six years and has been satisfied and hungry for more, this was the best series finale of any TV show, of any time , ever. If you didn’t cry or feel something from it upon a second viewing, (since the first was over-whelming) then you probably didn’t ever really love the show, or you are dead inside.

ON Island

This is the House that Jack Built

Jack has been deemed the new Jacob and with it he must now protect the island and stop the Man in black from leaving or trying to destroy the island. Sawyer, Kate, Hurley and Jack figure they need to find Desmond since Fake Locke wanted him dead. Therefore, Jack rationalizes he must be important and a weapon to stop fake Locke. Sawyer decides to go by himself to retrieve Desmond from the well that Sayid told them Desmond was in, before he blew up.

Ben and Fake Locke are at the empty well and Fake Locke confirms he plans on using Desmond to sink the island. Sawyer is hiding behind a too small bush and is discovered by Ben and Fake Locke where he lets them know they are no longer candidates.

Meanwhile out in the jungle, Miles finds Richard and is still communicating with Ben via the walkie-talkie. Miles and Richard get in an outrigger to head back to Hydra Island to blow up the plane, since they figure this is fake Locke’s way off the island. Richard has received his first grey hair, I imagine with Jacob officially gone, his living forever status has been canceled. Richard finds this amusing and realizes he wants to live.

FRANK!!! Screamed by all watching the finale

During their journey they come upon Frank Lapidius out floating in the water with the submarine debris, now that they have a pilot again, maybe blowing up the plane is not the best of ideas since it is a ticket home. In case we haven’t noticed, he is a pilot. I had hoped Frank was not done in by the door, figuring that he was one of the only ways to possibly get off the island.

Desmond was rescued by Rose, Bernard and Vincent (who is obviously a different and younger dog) Fake Locke finds them and tells Desmond if he doesn’t come with him to sink the island he is not only going to kill Rose and Bernard he is going to make it hurt. Desmond goes with him as willingly as someone could with those set of choices. But wants Fake Locke’s word he will never touch Rose and Bernard. In Desmond’s mind he knows he will be reunited with Penny since he saw it with all that electromagnetism.

Everyone meets up in an island version of draw. Fake Locke, Ben and Desmond are coming up one end of the mesa, and Jack, Hurley, Sawyer and Kate are coming up the other end. Kate unloads several rounds into fake Locke; no one gave her that heads up that he is invincible.

Whatever Happened, Happened

They head back to the secret bamboo field, where only Jack, Desmond and fake Locke head to the cave with the light, which is much dimmer now than when they first saw it. The creation of the smoke monster seemed to have stolen much of the light, and probably explains a lot of the evil goings on, on the island. Desmond is at peace with doing his part since he had that experience in the Flash Sideways where he is a successful man who has Widmore’s respect, and has Penny. He tries to make Jack feel at peace and tell him he wishes he could take him there too; there is a place where the plane didn’t crash. And Jack believes that is not true, There are no short cuts or do over’s, he tried to think that and he realizes everything here matters.

“You’re not John Locke, You Disgrace his Memory by wearing his Face.”

Jack and Fake Locke lower Desmond down in the cavern in the same way Kate was lowered down the hatch to find Desmond. Fake Locke jokes to Jack about fighting over pushing a button, and I am glad Jack told him off. Desmond seems to know what to do and removes some big heavy rock that was keeping the light lit. Once he did though, it seemed to work as a backwards drain and all the water stopped flowing. Red hot gases poured out of the area where the stone once was, giving the impression he was opening the fires of hell. Desmond is disappointed because he thought doing this was going to send him to his other self.

However doing this made Fake Locke mortal again, apparently this light has kept Jacob and him alive all that time, and would have done the same for Jack. But since it went out, Fake Locke could finally bleed, and everyone is now susepticable to death as the healing powers of the island have been extinguished.

The island becomes end of the world dark and is experiencing earth quakes that are knocking rocks all over the place and trees. Ben in a heroic moment pushes Hurley out of the way from being clobbered by a tree and gets pinned under it. And despite all the crap that Ben has put Kate, Sawyer and Hurley through they still lift that tree off of him.

Fake Locke heads over to the cliffs by the secret cave of names where the scales were housed. He has the Elizabeth docked just off shore. I wonder if he knew he would of needed a baring to get off the island? Jack shows up and in an epic battle they fight. Fake Locke delivers a major knife wound to Jack and begins to try to cut his throat but is interrupted by Kate.

Saved you a bullet

Kate comes up the mountain all Rambo-style and takes out the Man in black / fake Locke finally. Jack kicks his lifeless body off the cliff, which was great since too often the bad guy comes back to life, you know because crazy people are hard to kill.

They need to get to the boat docked off the island since the island is crumbling beneath them, and looks like the man in black was right about that. It was on its way to sinking and fear grips us as we had seen the flash sideways begin with a sunken island. Jack knows he still has work to do and cannot leave the island; he needs to put the rock back in its place so the island doesn’t sink. Jack and Sawyer say goodbye and Sawyer thanks him for everything. Jack and Kate give a tearful and heart tugging good bye knowing they will never see each other again, Kate finally tells Jack she loves him, he smiles with almost a laugh to himself to say...well finally and then he and he announces it back in the way all girls want to hear. Excuse me, need a tissue…or a box

Sawyer and Kate jump off the cliff to swim out to the boat so they can make it to the plane. Kate is still determined to find Claire and bring her back home. They meet up with her, and Sawyer, Kate, Claire, Miles, Richard and Frank get the plane working and take off to leave the island finally, forever.

Hurley and Ben decided they would go with Jack, Ben being the captain of the ship for so long, decides if the island is going to sink he is going down with it. They head back off to the field of bamboo and Jack initiates Hurley with an oceanic water bottle ‘drink this’ to take his place. Desmond was a weapon after all, since it was the only way to stop Fake Locke was to make him human again. But the island still needed to be protected because whatever the light means to us individually, it is meant to be in the world.

See ya in another Life Brotha….literally

Hurley is and has always been the most innocent of them all, besides the children and even Claire to some extent. Jack knows it was always suppose to be Hurley to be the protector since taking care of people is just what he does. Jack knew his purpose was to put things right, and that he was the only one who could of done that.

Hurley, Jack and Ben go back to the heart of the island to put the rock back in its place and save it. Jack finds a still alive Desmond and has him tied onto the rope to be saved by Hurley and Ben. Hurley and Ben agree that Ben should be his number two, and they would find a way to get Desmond home to his wife and son. There are still other people on the island and they stay there to protect them and it.

“I don’t believe in much but I do believe in Duct tape” Me too miles, me too

During this entire important save the world stuff, Frank, Richard and Miles had to find away to save their butts and are trying to fix the plane. They had previously come across Claire who was shooting at them and feeling unworthy of going home, since she is all crazy now. They get the plane functioning and are about to taxi down that familiar runway.

“Cause I’ve got to be free, to face the life that is ahead of me”

Captain Frank Lapidius, Miles, Sawyer, Kate, Claire and Richard all buckle in and take off down that old runway that both Sawyer and Kate lent a hand in building, guess they are probably happy about that now.

The Circle is complete

Jack gets the rock back in place, the water is flowing and he cries with relief and joy knowing he was right, he fixed it. He gets flushed down stream and winds up in a similar if not exact location where the man in black’s body wound up. He is still dying and walks as far as he can, which is back to the bamboo field where he first woke up on the island. He lays down and out comes Vincent, just as he did in the beginning, who lays down with Jack as dogs do when they know the end is near for their master. In his last moments Jack sees the Aijira plane fly over head, and figuring they were safe and on their way home, he closes his eyes and dies….and there is not enough tissues, had to get a roll of toilet paper.

Flash sideways…first stop before the after life

“Where everything is better, everything is safe” Walk on the Ocean by Toad the Wet Sprocket…well as long as you’re not a bad guy like Keamy, then you get shot here too and left for dead.

All of our people have been gathering by Desmond to attend this little concert. They will be making their own kind of music, Charlie with Driveshaft and Dan ‘faraday’ Widmore will be accompanying them on the piano singing their own special song, even if nobody else sings along.

In a final twist, LOST reveals that the flash sideways were a place the characters created to find each other first before going to the after-life, or whatever is next. This is up to your own interpretation, you could think they are going on to a heaven like place, or maybe be reincarnated and that is part of the reason why there are so many times people just 'know things". Maybe the keep doing this over again after they meet up in the flash sideways world?

They real joke is, for seasons people theorized the island was purgatory and how befitting for them to create a place that would be like purgatory or limbo whatever you want to call it. A place in between, time along side of real time. Of course most if not all of our characters did not realized this is where they were at first, and hence all of the awakening that needed to happen.

The sideways being used in the show, allowed full closure with our characters. A way for us to say good bye to them, to remember all of the wonderful moments of why we loved them to begin with. It is the characters of LOST that makes the show what it is, all of their struggles and growth and how that is tied to all of the other references in the show. It is what they went through, that makes LOST important, without them it’s just a crazy island with a polar bear and a guy who turned into smoke.

“Don’t let other people tell you, who you are.” Hurley reminds Sayid

Hurley and Sayid went to pick up Charlie at the same hotel that was a “safe house” last season when Sayid was protecting Hurley. (And also the same place Locke lost Helen when he couldn’t let go of what his dad did to him) Hurley goes to get Charlie and is beaming with happiness, because this is the first time he has been able to see Charlie after he died that wasn’t in a creepy ghostly way. This is a real Charlie, Charlie just doesn’t know it, and Hugo had to restrain himself somewhat from hugging him.

Sayid doesn’t remember anything until they are outside a bar though and he sees a damsel in distress. Hurley points out to Sayid that he has listened to people tell him who he is for so long, he has begun to believe it. “You don’t know me” Sayid tells Hurley who he doesn’t remember and just thinks is crazy. Hurley responds“I know A LOT about you…dude” and goes on to show him by setting him up. One man is beating the snot out of another, and a woman gets involved who is tossed into the garbage like a rag doll, this prompts Sayid to take action and get into ass-kicking mode. Sayid has always been a good guy to me; his past didn’t matter as it was a matter of circumstance much like Eko, where you don’t really have a choice, kind of like Jacob being the protector. Sayid though has always defended those he loved, and those who were weak.

Two for the Road

Boone was part of the plan to help wake up Sayid and to also help wake up Shannon!!! Sayid’s love on the island that also died in his arms, Sayid remember each other and have their reunion, well he was unlucky in love in this life, glad that after it will work out, guess he wasn’t meant to be with Nadia after all, come to think of it, that seems pretty clear now.

Charlie recognizes Claire from when he was choking on the plane, he had seen a vision of her and remembered something about her but not much because Jack brought him back. Claire looks at Charlie on the stage and looks around because she almost doesn’t believe he is looking at her, but something about him is familiar. Then labor begins and she goes off to have the baby, Kate who still follows people even here, joins up to help deliver Aaron again and they are all reunited with each other. Claire finally back with Aaron the baby. Most likely real Claire got to be with Aaron on some level, the plane probably landed safely since we did not see Frank or Richard.

“Maybe you’re going to be the one that saves me” Wonderwall by Oasis, sung by Charlie season3

Claire really was the one that saved Charlie, as well as Locke. Once he remembered all that he was through he was all himself. Claire and Charlie’s memoires elicited more tissues, the imaginary peanut butter, the baby carrier Charlie made Aaron, all of their moments and how their whole relationship was mostly a beautiful friendship, never consummated, and I think they only kissed that one time shown in their memories.

More Awakenings From Jin, Sun, Juliet and Sawyer
Jin and Sun see Ji Yeon with Juliet and awaken. It was fitting that it was Juliet since she gave Sun the first glimpse of their baby, and Jin never got to meet the baby. They have memories of their journey on the island, their many times being separated and being reunited, their relationship being repaired, and their eventual death together.

Sawyer enters their room later to protect Sun, and they just smile knowing it's him, but he doesn’t know it's them. “Hello…detective” loved that, because it is funny that Sawyer made himself a detective. He and miles did spend three years working as Dharma security, and I imagine when they got off the island they remained friends, so it is fitting they are still partners.

Sawyer and Juliet with the candy bar. Let’s go out for coffee, we could go dutch. When Juliet died in Sawyers arms in the season premiere she said these words, because she crossed over to the afterlife/sideways land and we wondered if she said it worked was because the bomb worked. But really what worked was unplugging the machine so he could get his candy.

It was whatever happened happens, the debate is now officially closed

We can say now that the bomb didn’t work they way that they had hoped, but in reality they had to do that otherwise the results would of messed up the space time by not negating the energy and possibly destroying the island back in 1977. In essence they created their own suffering, by ironically trying not to do so. I would bet the pregnancy problem was from the bomb also, which is why Juliet wound up on the island to fix a problem she actually created. Madness!

The flash sideways for me was going to be one of two things that I figured were to be answered in the finale, and it turned out it was neither. I figured it was an altered reality depicted and it was either from the bomb going off if that never happened the first time, thus creating a new reality on a separate time line. Or, the bomb was suppose to go off to negate the energy but if it didn’t then the island would sink and the flash sideways was to show they would of never wound up on the island because they never time traveled and never helped with that bomb. Almost like a prologue to the story before time travel and wheels turning.

Ben figured it out and once he remembered those parts of himself he had more to do with himself before he felt worthy of “leaving” I think he wanted to spend more time with Alex. Ben was a better guy in the flash Sideways and I think it was because of the way he begun to change himself from the point he apologized to Illana. Since he and Hurley were left on the island for who knows how many years, Ben probably continued his own metamorphous so that he was better off in the FS.

Kicking around on a piece of ground in your home town, waiting for someone or something to show you the way. Time

Locke in the Flash sideways was happy in some areas, better for some of what he did learn on the island. But his belief in destiny was gone, probably because Ben took that away from him with the whole murder thing. He does get his awaking from his toe moving. He remembers crashing on the island and what happened there, teaching Walt to throw the knife, finding the hatch. He looks at Jack and remembers him, and seems happy to see him and realizes that Jack has made his own improvements, Jack was the one all this time trying to repair what he did to Locke. For now he did believe in things, and thought nothing was irreversible. Locke repeats his ‘come with me” to Jack, and Jack almost remembers looking down the hatch, but pushes the thoughts away. Jack tells him he has to go to a concert with his son, when Locke says, “you don’t have a son”.

“These Feelings won’t go away, they keep knocking me sideways, I keep thinking in a moment that, time will take them away.” Sideways by Citizen Cope

Jack of course would be the one to take the longest to let go, all of our characters had issues with letting go, but Jack had it the worst. He was resistant to any visions he was receiving when Kate touched his face, when he was with Locke, I think he thought he was going crazy. He goes with her to the church where they will be having his father’s funeral.

Jacks touching of the casket brought a lot of his memories back, but not his death, and he opened it to find his dad not in it. Christian appears which confuses Jack because Christian is dead. “How are you here Jack?” he asks him when Jack realizes he is dead also. Jack and him talk about this place where there is no time, and there is no now that was created by survivors to find each other. He lets Jack and us know everything is real, every thing that ever happened to him is real and that he had to let go so they can go to the next destination. Which could possibly be to do this all over again, the end being also a begining.

I hope that in the end, when he was laying out in the bamboo field he too experienced this “sideways world’ like Juliet did, this way when he died, he wasn’t alone. Especially since they did learn to live together, when I first watched the finale it made me sad for Jack that he was the champion of that saying to only die alone, but then I thought about it and figured he did not. Vincent was with him anyway, and how beautiful was that? Full circle, the dog was there to wake him and was there when he went to sleep.

All of our main characters connected at the church with the absences of a few that needed more time to move on. Ben, Alex, Danielle, Widmore, Eloise, Dan, Charlotte, Miles and his dad most notably. It seems that those in the church, who were so connected to each other throughout different times of their lives, not just on the island were there for each other. Maybe that is a nice idea that we all have people connected to us to be there when big things happen.

Lost, even though it was a TV show, was not just a TV show. Never before have I been collectively a part with people who create the program. For everyone that truly loved it will tell you it was so much more, it was a learning experience, it was an opportunity to think and theorize, it allowed people to bond with their questions and their beliefs, It tested those beliefs and it gave us all much hope. It inspired us to read books, learn languages, study physics, LOST was more inspirational in the area of education, then all the years I spent in school.

Fans interacted with each other and with the creators. I will miss “Darlton’s” pod casts and they way they would converse with us, I would be glad to follow them down whatever rabbit hole they want to journey next, and would be most interested in working at any capacity.

Overall the series concluded with a message that we will always have more questions; we will not know the answers to everything and in the end that doesn’t matter. We have to let go. When watching the finale once you do let go you can see how everything about the ending was a goodbye. Their lives flashing before our eyes, our eyes who have loved these people, who rooted for them, laughed and cried with them throughout the series. We get to revisit all those moments that made us love them. And it made me realize how much the people who created this show, genuinely loved it as well.

This is how I felt about the finale after I watched it a second time, with no need for expectations. I let go of them, and I was left with just the emotions, the imagery and the clear realization that everything did matter, but I didn’t need to know who built the statue, it is just a bunch of rocks after all.

The circle of life on Lost

LOST ended its series with both a tragic ending and with the mega-happy ending. It answered all of the issues with the sideways; it left open the possibility of what else happened after the island. Because, in the end, there really is no end, nothing is ever over. LOST didn’t end, it simply concluded the tale it was telling.

Now that it has concluded and we have to let go and carry on, I leave you with the song White Rabbit by Jefferson Airplane. Which was also an episode title in season one. The song itself does capture a lot of LOST imagery because of all of the Alice and Wonderland references in the song and LOST. And within it is one of the best aspects of LOST, and in LOST fashion I will not tell you what that is, you need to decide for yourself.

LOST episode 6.16 What They Died for….a Light? Thanks Jacob that really explains it. Recap & Analysis

The Last regular episode of LOST, known as the penultimate episode
Multi-centric Flash Sideways featuring: Jack, Desmond, Locke, Ben, Sayid, Kate, Miles, Sawyer, Alex and Danielle

Desmond is still collecting people in the flash sideways and is getting them to go to a concert at the Museum that Miles’ Dad and Charlotte both work at, and David, Jack’s son is also playing piano. He seems to be a man with a plan, wanting to help them “let go” but for what reason? Fake Locke is off on a new mission of search and destroy.

On Island

The Days and Nights just start to blur together

The evening of death is over with Jack, Sawyer, Kate and Hurley on the beach from the explosion on the submarine. Jack repays Kate from early on in the first episode by stitching her up from her gunshot wound. Good thing he had a sewing kit on him. Kate decides they need to kill Fake Locke since he killed so many people, as if that will bring them back, but then again on this show, maybe it will. They decide they need to go off and find Desmond who was left in a well somewhere not too far from where they are now.

Ben, Miles and Richard are still wandering the island to the Dharma Barracks, seems as if it has taken them days to get there from the Beach. Normally it is a day and half walk, but the time on the island seems to have been speeding up, no one has noticed this yet but us the viewer. They decide to retrieve some C4 Ben had been holding onto, “just incase” to go blow the plane to hell as Richard put it. While doing this they are interrupted by Zoe pillaging Ben’s cabinets. Within moments, Widmore walks in and scares the crap out of Ben.

Let the bodies hit the floor

They know Fake Locke is on his way over to them so Ben tells Zoe and Widmore to hide in his closet, while Miles makes a run for it. Ben and Richard decide to wait for the arrival of the smoke monster who promptly throws Richard into a tree. Which better not be the end of him.

Fake Locke tells Ben he needs him to kill some more people for him and in exchange Ben gets the island all to himself. Maybe Ben cares about this, maybe he doesn’t, he typically has a plan so perhaps he only appears to align himself with fake Locke. He was willing to have Widmore executed, since Widmore is still just as responsible for the death of Alex as Ben is.

First he kills Zoe since " she wasn't going to tell him anything therefore she is pointless"..yeah that is what we have all been saying. Widmore whispers to Fake Locke why he is here, that Jacob told him how to get back to the island, he visited him shortly after the freighter went ka-boom. And he brought Desmond to the island as a measure of last resort (which use to be moving the island, but that must be a different measure of last resort) because of his ability to withstand Electromagnetism and he is a failsafe…for what, who knows.

Fake Locke and Ben went over to the well, found no love, and no Desmond. So plan C is put forth, Locke figures Desmond can help him destroy the island, so much for Ben being able to have it all to himself.

This Island of Misfit Toys, part of the Juxtaposition Galaxy

Meanwhile, Jack, Sawyer, Kate and Hurley are on their way to rescue Des when Hurley runs into Ghost boy Jacob, who wants his ashes and runs off with them. Hurley follows to find grown up Jacob, burning his ashes, and when the ashes are gone so will he be. They must be magic ashes since ash is ash and is the result of stuff burning so not sure how that is possible, but then again how is an island moving all the time possible and the surviving of a plane breaking apart 30,000 feet in the air with only scratches.

Suddenly its night time again, and they have a pow-wow around the camp fire, Kate is pissed and wants to know what Sayid, Jin and Sun died for. Everyone wants to know why they are there, what is the deal with the cave and Jacob tells them, sort of. He tells them they have to protect the light from the monster. And they buy it!! Really why not just put up them pylons, save everyone all the trouble?

Jacob explains they were all flawed and he brought them to the island because they were like him, alone and needing to find meaning and the island needed them as much as they needed the island. He needs to find a candidate to replace him, and Kate could have it too if she wanted, he crossed her off because she became a mom. Which is better then what Smokey does when the island is done with them, or what it did to Illana. No one is jumping at the job except Jack and as Sawyer put it, Jack has the god complex. Jacob then initiated Jack and told him he could find the light, at the heart of the island which is just beyond a ridge past the bamboo field he was in when he first got to the island.

Flash Sideways

Mirror Mirror on the Wall, What I am seeing is not familar at All

Begins with Jack waking in the morning to notice more blood on his neck, he is puzzled but maybe he was just scratching himself. We know better, we just don’t know what it means yet. Most of our charachters have caught themselves in the mirror and each time they seemed puzzled or disappointed in what they see reflected back at them. Jack, David and Claire have a nice breakfast when Desmond calls impersonating someone from Oceanic to say they found his Dads coffin, and it will be there in the evening.

This day in the flash sideways universe continues on for Des, he stops by the school and wails on Ben’s face some more, (Jacob taught him his killer one move) telling him he was just helping Locke let go. And it brings a flash to Ben of a previous time he was getting his face beat in. Ben gets fixed up at the school nurses office when Locke seems him and they share this information. Which prompts Locke to go see Jack and schedule the surgery, he is finally ready to get out of the chair.

"Your like the Nicest Guy ever ...

Ben goes off to dinner with Alex and Danielle, could that be romance blossoming? Danielle tells him he is the closest thing to a father, and Alex’s real dad died when she was two.He is noticeably choked up, maybe he doesn’t know why because this Ben would be appalled by his otherself. How funny was it that Danielle joked that they would kidnap him if he didn't come to dinner willingly, (sigh) if she only knew.

After Desmond was done wailing on Ben he turned himself in to Sawyer and Miles and was put in the same cell as Sayid and Kate. He previously made arrangements to have Hurley pay off Ana Lucia some 135k to let them go. She is not ready for whatever grand experiment that is going to happen, and off Hurley and Sayid go in the hummer. And Kate and Desmond leave in the old Car that Hurley and his dad were restoring, in another life.

This was the final regular episode and on Sunday is the series finale that will go for 2 and half hours. How will it all tie up? Does the man in black get off the island? If it does what do they mean everyone will die? Or do they just think that, like they think the light exists in everyone and if it goes out there it goes out everywhere? What is the flash sideways! I hope it is not an epilogue or flash-forward, that this is the result of fake Locke sinking the island, I am pulling as I have said since last season that what we were watching was an altered past and the main time and the flash sideways will create each other, like one continues circle not knowing were one ends and one begins. I have faith it will be brilliant, sad, melancholy and the attention to details will be more clear after it is over. It is bittersweet that LOST is ending, but great to know the answers finally.

Early island flashback, birth of Jacob and his brother….”brother”, and their mother, “Mother” Lost has named its characters this week, the way I use to name my stuffed animals, meet bunny, and bunny-bunny.

This episode was entirely back story, and had none of our normal characters besides Jacob and the Man in black, who must be named brother, since they never addressed him by name.

A long long time ago in a galaxy either here or far away, jury is still out

A very pregnant woman named Claudia, who appeared to be in Roman or Greek dress came washing up on the shore from a shipwreck that she was separated from. While she is drinking from a stream in the valley on the island a mysterious woman comes to help her get cleaned up, deliver her babies and then kill her. Well she did apologize first. Claudia did not expect the two babies, she was only expecting one baby who she named Jacob, and the other baby may have been named, however the whole episode they only refer to him as Brother or love.

Thirteen years pass with the boys and their mother on the island, they believe this is all there is, nothing is across the sea only this island. “Brother” has a more inquisitive mind than Jacob, he has intuition, he is deemed special by his mother. He finds a game in the sand that likely washed up on shore (though their mother said she put it there) and knows how to play it, he just knows in the same way Locke always knew things. Jacob is a definite mommy’s boy, can’t tell a lie, and has only one fighting move, throw your opponent down and wail on his face.

Mommy issues, and no baby’s daddy to be seen

The mother seems to have a different fondness, sense of pride in the boy in black or “brother”. She smiles warmly while talking to him and states how he is special and is not like Jacob who doesn’t even know how to tell a good lie. At the end of her chat she gives him a motherly smooch. All of her interactions are warmer, and more emotional then hers with Jacob, whom she has a much more drier uninterested tone.

Walt materializes a bird in "Special"

Before she comes up to him there is a sea turtle on the beach, then it is gone. When they were talking about the game could of only come from here since, that is all there is, I thought about Walt, how he was special, how the birds appeared, maybe even the polar bears. Who knows maybe this kid brought the senet game, maybe he is the magic box.

We are here for a reason, what reason, we can’t tell you because we don’t actually know

The boys discover there are other people on the island, and they are not alone. Their mother tells them the others are not like them; they fight, destroy and corrupt. She has kept the babies away from these people and all people I imagine, because she believes she was able to keep the boys good. This is similar to the way we look at extreme homeschoolers.

She blind folds them and takes them on a little walk through the valley where the caves have been and they come upon a stream that goes under ground, beneath it has a glorious light that is illuminating the cavern. She warns them they cannot go down there; it is a fate worse than death. But down there is life, death and re birth, it is what exists in everyone, and if it went out on the island it would go out everywhere. She also mentioned this is the source, and the heart of the island. She has made it her job to protect it, who knows if anyone told her it needed protecting. But it is her job never-the-less, and it will one day be one of the two boy’s job. Jacob doesn’t seem that interested, and his brother finds it beautiful and is intrigued.

At least in her mind, she believes she is there to protect the island, and she believes they are different then regular people. She could be telling the truth or she could be crazy, probably a little of both, because she didn’t seem to age a day in forty-three years. This is not normal so she is different from the others, and made Jacob the same way. This could be a mystery that will be up to the viewer to decide.

The Grass is always Greener

All of this was still fine with both brothers until the ghost of Claudia shows up and tells “brother” where he is truly from, and how who they are calling “mother” is not only not their mother, this same woman killed their real mother, who is her by the way. This is not exactly good news for any person or child to receive. Is it really her, or the island?

Jacob can’t see her ( just like Hurley, and Sawyer could see Jacobs ghost talk to FLocke) this encounter is what led “brother” to go live with these other people, he didn’t belong on the island, and just like Ben Linus trying to escape Dharma for the others..”Brother” wants to escape his fate with his Mother and Jacob and what sounds like what becomes the others, to join, other others.

Jacob gets all pissed off

It also forces some ugliness out of Jacob, who seems to sense that he lives in his brother’s shadow and his mother loves his brother more. He is angry and jealous and chooses to stay with his mother despite the fact she killed his biological mother because he loves her and needs her approval. Jacob has had his own issues of letting go, so it seems. “Brother is angry also with his mother for lying to him, and since he has this intuition and probably has known he belongs somewhere else.

Jacob and his brother keep in touch over a thirty year period, still playing the same Egyptian game Senet, the oldest game in the world. “Brother tells Jacob their mother maybe crazy but she was right about these people, they were in his opinion, untrustworthy, selfish, manipulative, and greedy. But he realizes they are a means to end, to getting off the island. Jacob is content living on the island, it is his home, it is all he knows and all he cares to know. If Jacob has one better quality then his brother it is his ability to be grateful. Not that there is anything wrong with his brothers quest for knowledge, just to the extreme he seems to be going to, to obtain it.

She wanted it to be him, but settled for Jacob

“I have no idea because you wouldn’t tell me”

Their mom shows up while “brother” is working in the cavern where the wheel is eventually built and tries to convince him to let go of what he is after, she doesn’t want him to leave. He shows her they found the light source another way and are making this contraption that will move water and the light and somehow he knows this will get him off the island. She is not happy because they will be using the light, which is her job (real or imagined) to protect. So she does what anyone would do, knocks him unconscious and somehow has the super human powers to get him out of the well, fill it in, and murder and burn the village. Could she be a smoke monster also?

After waking up and discovering the carnage (much in the way Luke Skywalker came home to Tatooine in Star Wars) “brother’ goes back to his original home in the caves, trashes the place and stabs his own mom in the back. She thanks him, and tells him she didn’t want him to leave because she loved him, laid on the guilt pretty thick there, but can’t say I blame her.

Jacob comes in and beats the crap out of his brother and decides to throw him down stream to the magic light so he can have a fate worse than death, since their mother made it (somehow) that they can’t kill each other, or at least she has them believe this. This is the first time Jacob has shown any balls, and I think he regretted it right afterwards but we can understand his rage, since his brother killed the only other person he ever loved. And in minutes he lost them both, and was alone on the island for who knows how long.

Jacobs brothers body is sucked down the stream into the light, the light goes out and out comes what we know as the smoke monster. Accompany this to what the man in black has already told us, that Jacob stole his body and his humanity that trip down stream seemed to remove his soul and energy and added it to some column of smoke. Or his body released the smoke monster, and it just has Jacobs’s brother’s memories, and it’s not the same guy at all. Jacob later finds his brothers body downstream.

The Tragedy continues…. Adam & Eve

Jacob later lays his mother and brother to rest in the caves with two of the senet rocks. We are treated to a viewer flashback (House of the Rising Sun 1.04), which would be a flash forward from the islands point of view. I am guessing at this point the 40 or 50 years comment on how long they have been dead from Jack was incorrect and irrelevant. Perhaps at the time of writing that episode they didn’t decide how old the island was, they didn’t have identities for Adam and eve and just planned on having identities. Or it was just because Jack is a doctor not an archeologist, perhaps if Charlotte said it, it would be different. Either way, the time always seemed to be a useful clue, but it turned out to mean nothing.

This episode filled in some of the blanks, and as Mother said in the beginning, with each questions answered there were more questions to ask. The wheel is not built still and no idea if any of the other ancient structures are there besides the wells. The only disappointment is this seemed to be the last episode that would answer any mythology questions and it did not, but it did answer more important questions on how Jacob came to be there and what type of people he and his brother are.

The Truth is out There…Just not in here

In the end, I get the feeling LOST will be more a show of how there really is no truth, that it is all subjective. Everything is grey, there is no black and white, good and evil. This episode clearly shows how one person can be all things. Their mother is allegedly protecting the island, and still killed their mother and a whole village of people, probably with good intentions or is just crazy. Jacob kicks the crap out of his brother twice, once because he just doesn’t like what he is saying, and the other more justifiable…though if we say that then we can say so was his brothers actions with killing his mother. (vicious circle) In the end, Jacob decided to give his brother a fate worse than death, not exactly the actions of someone who is “good”. Whereas this other guy, sure he killed this woman who raised him for 13 years because she killed a whole bunch of people, but if we say he is evil for doing that, then we must say Jacob and his mom are also evil and all people who execute others who commit murders are also evil. And that may not be something anyone can say.

This episode in a way did answer many questions. The story of good versus evil on this show has been told all along that it is not so black and white. The mystery of the donkey wheel has been explained besides it just being something that was discovered by Dharma, but it was created by these people that crashed there who brought Jacob and his brother. They may not have completed building it, but someone else does, and it doesn’t really matter who does, we know Dharma uses it at some point by sending polar bears out into the desert. We know this because Charlotte excavated one with a Dharma collar in “Confirmed Dead” Season 4. We only need to know any more about it, if it has to do with the main plot, if it was turned at some point where it affected many things that have happened or seem to not make sense.

We are the Cause of our own suffering

In the end this episode awesomeness can be found in the fact that the smoke monster/ man in black/ brother entity were just another victim of the island. He wasn’t a bad guy, he just wanted to leave, find knowledge and answers. But now however many years later, he has become everything he said he didn’t like, he became manipulative, untrustworthy and selfish where he is putting his own desire to leave over everyone else’s lives. He criticized Jacob for wasting so many lives, but over the past several hundred years so has he.

Across the Sea also showed Jacob to not be this omnipotent deity, he was a regular mamma’s boy, living in his brothers shadow, with no male role model, who one day had no choice but to take on this job to protect his home. He is like any other working stiff in a role or job that they never asked for and didn't really want but stay in anyway. He lost everyone he loved, which was only two people and the fact that he has spent however many many years playing some game makes a bit of sense, even if it doesn’t seem “good”.

The episode begins with no previously on Lost with Locke waking up from surgery in the flash sideways. This episode we find out what put Locke in the wheelchair (this time), more weird passenger connections to the flight, Fake Locke is getting closer to getting off the island, people die and sadness takes over.

Off Island in the land of X, the other side of the looking glass

Jack lets Locke know he is a candidate for some new surgery where he may walk again. But Locke is resistant to surgery, in an earlier episode The Substitute after meeting Jack and considering calling him for a consultation he decides against it and does not want to believe in destiny and accepts he may always be in the chair. He still feels this way. Later on when Locke is leaving the hospital and Jack does find out why he is in the chair he asks him to stop punishing himself, learn to let go, whatever happened happened…how many lost clichés can we get into this episode? The answer is eight, well I could have missed some, but that is my official tally.

Jack goes on a search to find out what happened to put Locke in the wheel chair, because he knows he can fix him and since Jack here in the X time line still needs to fix things, still can’t let things go he does what all doctors do. He goes to find someone who will give him confidential patient doctor files so he can get some information to use to get what he wants and find what he is looking for.

“ Maybe you’re on to SomethingThere”

Jack meets up with Bernard who was working on some teeth and realizes the dentist who has the information about Locke was the same guy who was sitting across from him on the flight that he was on just one a week or so ago. Bernard thinks it’s pretty weird and has an excellent memory and remembers the other person in the accident with Locke, who was Anthony Cooper. So what if it was over three years ago, this is not strange to Bernard, nothing says he is a great dentist and has a lot of clients. Something about it though is odd.

ha-ha-ha..karma is a bitch!

Jack also made the rounds at the home where Cooper is living, and he discovers he is a “vegetable”
guess sawyer doesn’t need to kill him, since he is pretty much gone. Helen was visiting at the time and was bringing him a plant, wiped up some slobber and gives the impression this Anthony Cooper may not be as dastardly as the other. Which didn’t make me feel sorry for him, no, he ruined Sawyer’s , Locke’s and countless others lives with his cons. I still remember Locke yelling to him from that camera outside Cooper’s estate right after he got his kidney, if anyone deserves to be where ever he is, it’s Cooper.

Claire and the Mysterous Box, but not the magical one Ben told Locke about...or is it?

Jack later goes back to visit Locke who is asleep and dreaming about pushing the button, and starts repeating his suicide note he had written to Jack (I wish you‘d believed me) so long ago. Too bad Ben showed up then,(2007) since Locke was a candidate still, his attempt wouldn’t of worked. Jack is interrupted from watching Locke sleep when he sees Claire out in the hallway.

Claire never met Christian; we know he met her previously because of her mother’s accident, so perhaps there was no accident? Christian though died the same way, we know from the Main time line he went to Sydney to talk to Claire’s mom to see Claire. For some reason he willed Claire a music box that plays “Catch a falling star”, and we know that was a tune he sang to her as a child. Jack and Claire look into the box and see their reflection in the mirror but neither knows why this box is so important. Jack offers Claire to stay with him while she is in town since they are family. Glad he is not abandoning her here too.

“I wish you believed me”

Locke is on his way out of the Hospital and he passes Jin, bringing Sun flowers down the hallway when he runs into Jack. Locke finally tells him he broke his back three years ago in a plane crash when he just got his pilot’s license and he is responsible for the state his Dad is in. In this world, his Dad must of never tried to steal his kidney since that is what led to his anger problems, away from Helen and out a window four years earlier.

They have a discussion about how Jack can fix Locke, and he needs to stop punishing himself for what happened to his dad. Jack wants him to let go, he knows how hard that is and somehow he thinks this stranger should be the one to “go first”. Locke seems to have some vague déjà vu when he sees Jin, and hears Jacks final words to him that he could help him and he wished he believed him.

On the Island

Memories…like scattered Fish biscuits in the corners of the cages, musty water logged Fish biscuits of the way we were…

Widmore, Zoe and crew had Sawyer, Kate, Jin, Sun, and Frank all marched to where Dharma did their zoological experiments back in the day on Hydra Island. Back in the cages but not for long, Smokey kills a bunch of the Widmore’s people. Who apparently haven’t been briefed about the powers of the smoke monster.

Jin and Sun catch up, she gives him back his ring and I say to my sister…”they are gonna die soon.” Jack, fake Locke and Sayid ‘rescue’ the captives from Widmore’s clutches and they head over down the road to where the plane landed. Sawyer and Kate must be having some kind of flashbacks of their own from their days on the chain gang making the runway, and the consummation of their relationship of course.

This thing killed Eko, enough said

Fake Locke is by the plane first, he kills the foolish ones that are shooting at him, which Widmore didn’t seem to bother to tell any of them either he can’t be shot. Makes you wonder what he has all those guns for?

For some peculiar reason, fake Locke likes one of the dead guy's watches and takes it off his body. He then Discovers the plane is rigged with c4, well maybe he didn’t discover it, maybe he just found where it was placed since it obviously wasn’t flown there. Widmore likes his c4; somehow I think he had something to do with the missing shipment that Sayid’s friend was accused of taking way back before 815 ever landed on this island. Because coincidence is just a word on this show that takes on a different meaning.

“I Don’t Trust that Thing one Bit….Just get it in the water.” Fake Locke has been demoted to an IT

Fake Locke convinces them that Widmore wants to get them all in a contained space and then of course kill them, he doesn’t know why and no one asks. So off they head to the “heavily guarded sub” that is not guarded what so ever. Sawyer doesn’t believe him, and when they are about to board the sub Fake Locke makes one last attempt to get Jack to leave because whoever told Jack he had to stay didn’t know what he was talking about. Then in one of my favorite moments of the episode, Jack knocks him in the water “JOHN LOCKE TOLD ME I NEEDED TO STAY!”

Suddenly there are people shooting from the trees while everyone finishes getting on the sub (minus Claire) about time someone shot Kate. Claire takes a few of them out all that island living turned this quiet Aussie mum into a lean mean killing machine.

You don’t want to be on that Submarine

The sub pulls away leaving Claire and Fake Locke on the dock. Jack soon realizes there is a bomb is his back pack, Locke pulled a switcheroo on him, and now the watch makes sense. Somehow he is a bomb making expert now but ok, guess he did that while he was waiting for them to show up at the plane. Smoke moves fast ya know. The bomb is going to go off in 3 minutes; there is not enough time to surface the sub. Jack has an epiphany that perhaps Fake Locke can’t kill them, and he is trying to get them to kill each other by detonating the bomb by trying to not detonate it. Very shrewd and screwed up.

Sawyer having some serious trust issues, still reeling over Juliet’s death the loss of what became his normal life. For three years he was no longer allowing anger and pain run his decisions (ever since he killed Anthony Cooper) but now with Juliet and all that gone he doesn’t believe Jack. The bombs timer picks up the pace and now they are trapped with nowhere to go and just over a minute to live.

Sayid who had seemed to regain some sense of himself lets Jack know that Desmond is in a well about a mile south of the camp they were just at and he must be important because Locke wanted him dead. Jack asks why he is telling him this and Sayid lets him know “it's going to be you Jack” (the candidate we assume) and off he runs down the hall with bomb in hand, to save his friends. He always said he was willing to give his life if it meant securing rescue, the Sayid I have known and loved was back, and then gone again in just over a minute. And now a moment of silence for our fallen lost Brotha

“Aw Hell”

As if that wasn’t tragic enough they decide to kill us some more with having Lapidius be taken out with a door, and Sun is trapped. While trying to rescue her Sawyer is knocked unconscious, everyone is desperate and trying to help each other. Kate being shot needed help out of there (see she always ruins everything) so Hurley swims her out to the beach. Jack had to let go and leave Jin and Sun, and they drown together, Jin unwilling to leave her. The whole time all I could think of was how they went through so much, wind up on this island, repair their relationship, and create a baby. Sun gets to leave and she thinks he is dead for years. But then gets the wonderful news he is not dead. She spends a few crazy weeks (or however long it has been) searching for him, following Locke who is not Locke, being chased by smoke monsters. Walking all over this crazy place all the while with their little one back at home, they finally are back together, they are going home…and then they just die. Seems wrong somehow.

Thanks goodness that damn Nicorrette Shark commercial came on after otherwise it would have been the waterworks for sure…and now a moment of silence for Lapidius, Jin and Sun

Fake Locke leaves in a huff to finish what he started since he must know if the candidates are alive or dead. Why did he want them to come back to the island then? If they never came back wouldn’t they just of died eventually anyway, couldn’t he have waited?

And where the hell is Richard, Ben and Miles? Did they get caught up in a game of risk?

Uh…Fake Locke can’t kill them as the boy in the jungle stated…and X Locke is not in the chair for the same reason as main time line Locke. Nothing else of importance has jumped out at me.

The Last Recruit LOST episode 6.13 Recap & Analysis

whose sides and packages they may be stowing, and on boats they are rowing,
and they certainly aren’t showing any sign that they know what the f#%k is going on!!!!”

The insanity of this episode forced this parody of Willie Wonka's little tune out of me. Complete overload and I am working on processing it as I write this, so pardon any jumping around..I feel like our time flashers of last season.

The Flash Sideways, packed with 23 more characters

This episode seemed designed to get all of our lost friends all together again. Most were gathering at the hospital (Locke, Ben, Jin, Sun, Jack) others at the police station (Sawyer, Miles, Kate, Sayid) The sideways changed point of view of the candidates – Locke, Sawyer, Sayid, Claire (probably not a candidate though) Jack, Sun.

Oh what a coincidence! Over and over again, this time in the flash sideways they at least are talking about it, where on the island they were ignorant too many of these connections. Desmond showing up at the same place Claire is going to give up her baby and wow at the same time Jack is getting the will read, that conveniently they need her there for, and by the way Claire you have a brother, and a nephew.

Claire is a trusting soul, between letting Kate drive her to the hospital after Kate held her at gun point earlier this season and following the nice looking Scottish gent who seems to be appearing places, and will help her with a lawyer for her adoption, because you know those things are irreversible…well good thing she is meeting Jack who doesn’t think that way.

Nice to see Illana is a lawyer here, hopefully her life will have a bit more purpose than going to a weird island to bring some guy there who turns into a zombie and getting blown up.

Sun recognizes Locke for some reason, briefly…it’s him! She is ok, and so is the baby, good there

Sawyer caught Kate (and he likes her) and Sayid with Miles help. He acknowledges how weird it is that he met her on the plane and out of all the cars in LA she crashed into his. Sawyer and Miles track down Sayid “the bad guy” after his latest killing rampage. These scenes are filling in what has been going on for the past week or so, establishing the connections. All of this in the sideways has transpired in just over a week from the time the plane landed safely in LAX.

Back on the Island - Trust No one, really no one

Kate seemed to talk some sense into Claire, and maybe Desmond talked some into Sayid. I hope Hurly is right and they can come back from the dark side.

Sun and Jin were finally reunited, I was tense waiting for one or both of them to get shocked by the pylons but fortunately the pylons were not on. Sawyer got a bit teary over this reunion, but it may be short lived as it looks like Widmore wants to kill them all. He attempted to blow up Locke, maybe got a few others, but he rescued Jack, I guess he does need him so he can leave after all.

Smokey admits that he was Christian…really all the time? What about when he was on the freighter blowing up Michael, or when Jack saw him at the hospital in LA?

Well I never thought about it like that

Sayid is told he must kill Desmond, and Des makes a good point about what would Nadia think about what Sayid had to do to be with her or zombie her? We do not see him shoot Des, so maybe he did not after all. He took a while to get back to Fake Locke, because he needed a minute. Hopefully he helped Desmond out, I figure if he did shoot him we will be shown it as it would be greatly upsetting and they wouldn’t waste that drama.

The Last Recruit

Widmore sends that annoying girl Zoe to their camp to request Desmond back, she leaves the two-way radio which Fake Locke smashed with his stick…ah ha a purpose! Seems the hatred for technology is shared by him, real Locke and Jacob, see they had things in common all along, too bad they didn’t focus on these things. Zoe informs Locke they have until nightfall to return him, (which could be anytime, what was up with the night to day this episode) however they did not give them until nightfall and once Sawyer and crew, minus Jack showed up on Hydra Island, they shot off some missals

When Jack was face down in the sand he heard muffled shouting, it wasn’t Locke, what was that? Locke pulls Jack off to the side so he doesn’t want him dead, so maybe them all leaving together is the only way he can get off the island. But even though the candidates can’t kill themselves they can be killed, they can kill each other or be killed by Widmore, so not sure if he does need all of them or just one.

Jack said when he left the island last he felt as if a piece of him was missing. He did have to leave some of his friends behind, but they were friends he has only known for 3 months. However, having survived what they did would create greater bonds. Sadly I don’t think he meant Claire since right after she got done telling him she trusted fake Locke because he was the only one who didn’t abandon her, Jack decides to get the cool kids together…and abandon her. Still makes me think about the sideways and that part of him, and which came first.

The End is near, Repent!

There is just 3 more regular episodes and the 2 hour finale and there seems to be a good deal of wrapping up to happen. I will write up another post of the big questions left to be answered or that seem to not have a complete answer. But for now the biggest question is what is the Sideways and how does it relate to the Main story we have been watching for six years?

If Ben never turned the wheel – Sawyer, Jin, Juliet, Miles, Charlotte and Locke wouldn’t of turned the wheel again – Rousseau’s team would not have been brought to the island – no Alex to be killed by Keamy or to rescue Sawyer and Kate – The Drug plane would of never wound up on the island – Boone would not be dead – So far in our sideways world we do know that Alex and her mother are in LA, I imagine in either scenario they would not have made it to the island.

Think of time as one long line that does not end in what we consider the present, instead of thinking that tomorrow hasn’t happened yet because it hasn’t happened to us, think what if it has already?

Thinking of time like this allows the story of them flashing and always being part of the history and why they are there to make sense. Because they are there in a very early time on the island, well before the black rock arrives to destroy the statue.

This also explains why they were never suppose to leave (hurly, jack, Kate, Sayid)

The Flashing
The flashing is what made them part of the island why 815 took them there, and them being there is why the flashing happened…chicken or egg came first?

So the real question is, did Jughead negate the energy that was released but not the pocket? Hence the concrete and numbers to be put into the swan and everything else that unfolded that we already know. The bomb may have changed things, but only because the wheel was turned…because the wheel was turned these changes happened. You can think this may be true since the island is still there during our main time line of 2007/2008.

What the Flash Sideways does show
So the flash sideways with a submerged island maybe the result of the wheel not being turned and them not negating the energy. Perhaps the power would have just pulled the thing to the bottom of the ocean. Or is it the bomb that negated the energy, and destroyed the pocket and that energy is what holds the island up to begin with since it’s a magical place with a frozen donkey wheel…its not a regular island. So maybe the EMF pockets where keeping it a float so if that energy is canceled out then maybe it will sink. Which would then mean an altered reality had to be created from that event since those people exist in the one they are in…and they flashed back to that time they came in?

The Flash sideways shows them never being on the island and most of the people that were there are not now, so they didn’t go down with it. The whole thing of 815 was created to save the island from sinking, which may be what they did with Jughead…where if they were never there and the wheel never turned they would of not saved it…hence making the sideways seem to be a prologue in a sense, but maybe not exactly considering the way time is used on this show. Sideways shows without Jacobs’s interference, without Desmond winding up on the island…if he didn’t they would all be dead? Everything would just “cease to be”, which is interesting because it’s what Widmore tells Desmond. Basically saying he has some sacrifice to make to keep that reality intact, so it doesn’t cease to be, and this sounds to be the very nature of the war.

The war seems to be over which timeline will prevail.

The real question lies with trying to find what connects the two timelines, because there is one, since Des, Charlie, Libby, Hurley and Faraday have had visions of another life.

These guys hold all the answers! Not the frog...or does he? Damn this show!!!

Hurley-centric No Mirror reflections for you!

Hurley in X …aka Hugo, is a rich and loving guy that everyone loves so much they have given him a ‘Man of the Year Award’ from the Paleontology wing of the Museum that Chang works for in the shape of a dinosaur. Hugo has always had a thing for dinosaurs, early on he thought what turned out to be the smoke monster was a dinosaur, so it seems appropriate.

Hugo isn’t lucky with the ladies so much.(as seen in the Main Time Line as well) Mom wants to send him on a blind date and as luck would have it, he runs into Libby who knows him. The only problems are he doesn’t know her and well she was at that restaurant on an outing with the Santa Rosa mental Health patients, and she is one of them.

Desmond runs into to Hurley also and convinces him to go find Libby, ya never know brother she maybe your soul mate. Hurley in this reality doesn’t have as much confidence as I first guessed judging on his need for fried chicken when he is depressed, and his lack of girl-mojo. He does proeceed to find out about the mysterous blonde who knows him, even though he just met Desmond, he decides to go find Libby.

Of course it costs him 100,000 dollars to fix up the rec. room of Santa Rosa, but in his other life he spent a bit of time there, heck it was that life that led him to the dang island because of Leonard Sims and his constant number ramblings that Hurley played in the lottery and won and thus went to Australia to find out what the numbers meant, which led him to the island, and then Rousseau told him they were numbers she was following also and were cursed.

Libby and Hurley finally have their picnic on the beach, they kiss and suddenly some flashes come back to him. She somehow knew about the other life, the plane crash, Hurley, they liked each other. Don’t know if she had a near death experience or not. Des is sitting off in his car smiling like cupid, then later he runs down Locke in a parking lot. Weird. Surprise number two

On Island

I’ve been training my whole life for this……to blow up? Seems wrong somehow

It starts off with a bang, after Hurley talks to Michael’s ghost he finds out they shouldn’t go blow up the plane because they will all die. We also know that Hurley has never seen Libby’s ghost sadly. Illana is getting dynamite to protect them she puts her bag down and blows up. Giving us surprise number one.

Well the island was through with her, and when it’s done with you it likes to blow you up some of the time.

Past exploders – Artz, Michael, Patchy, the sub, the satellite station, later the black rock

This departing of Illana doesn’t slow down our Losties too much, with the limited amount of time left with the series and the fact they are probably getting use to these things they gather themselves together and move on to plan B, which is really the same plan.

Hurley finds a red book in a foreign language and a bag of something (black and white rocks perhaps, Jacobs ashes?) in what may have been Illana’s tent, he puts them aside when Richard starts frantically packing up to continue Illana’s mission to the black rock for more dynamite for the destruction of the plane. They are not aware of the submarine at this point, I still don’t know why real Locke blew up the other one. I know he wanted to stay, but couldn’t he have achieved that without dashing everyone else’s hopes? Sheesh, probably could of prevented all these things from happening…

So Hurley is the new John Locke and after convincing everyone to go to the Black Rock to get the dynamite, he sets it off and blows the thing up.

This leads to a new divide – Ben, Richard and Miles: Jack, Hurly, Sun and Frank…looks like Locke got his way, they are all together again…except Jin, whom Widmore has. But Richard is still hell bent on blowing things up and wants to head back to the Dharma Barracks to get some grenades or whatever bomb like stuff they have there, hey there should be a nuke buried somewhere. Hurley has the not-so-well-thought-out-idea to just go talk to ‘Locke’. Miles doesn’t seem to think this Fake Locke is the talking type, and since Ben and Richard have been on this island for some time, and probably have a better idea what is going on, decide to stick together.

“You talk to wood now?”

At the other camp Fake Locke is wildling some wood into something unknown to him and Sawyer is much like the original Sawyer who crashed on this island 3+ years ago. He is angrily wondering why they haven’t gotten Jin back, and what they are going to do next. Fake Locke lets him know they will leave as soon as Jack, Hurley and Sun come to the dark side.

Sayid returns with the package, and since Fake Locke doesn’t like secrets, Sayid and him go off to discuss this…in secret..and then Fake Locke secretly leaves with Desmond. During his travels with Des they see the secret boy that Richard didn't see but Sawyer and now Des has seen. The kid looks like Jacob, but who knows what it means since Fake Locke is being so secretive about it, and thus is also a hypocrite. (Please stop defiling Lockes image fake Locke person that i want to like but can't)

“We are sending our love down a well…All the way Down!"

Fake Locke just wants to show Des the well, real up close I guess. Because after a brief history lesson on how the original people who dug it did so by hand to find out why compasses spin, but didn’t find out anything, he asks Des why he isn’t afraid of him. Desmond responds with “what’s the point of fear? Fake Locke lives with fear, and uses it on people, in an effort to support his beliefs much in the way people who justify their own beliefs based in insecurity. And I guess it pissed him off so he tosses Des down the well, maybe having a little bit of fear would of kept him from being tossed, or who knows, maybe Fake Locke would of turned into Smokey and tossed Des around like a doll for awhile.

This is also not the same well behind the orchid where the donkey wheel resides, Flocke even told us as much after explaining about those hardworking well diggers. " This isn't the only well." And if you look at the area, the other well was behind the statue near the sea, and near the orchid but still in the jungle, not an open grassy field. It also most notiably, had strange structures around it.

Fake Locke returns back to camp and not too long after Sawyer asked about his plans, in walks the remaining candidates and a pilot to get off the island, thanks Michael.

Oh and the whispers are the dead on the island.....yes I find this explaination weak also. Many of us suspected the whispers to be the dead, but somehow I did not expect it to be explained so casually. I guess because Hurley's super ghost powers were not active when he was first on the island, and it must of developed from having left, so what does that mean?

The episode concludes with Desmond looking like a pedophile outside the school Ben and Locke teach for, when he is really waiting for Locke to come rolling by. Unexpectedly he runs him down, which asks many questions on his motives. Since he is attempting to show all of the passengers ‘something’, is he giving Locke a near death experience? But he just had a little pow-wow with Hugo he didn't try to drown him in chicken or anything, so is there some other motivation?

• Desmond runs down Locke…who is not the MIB in X..I guess, was he mad about the whole well thing, or is he just trying to give him a near death experience?

The whispers are ghosts, people trapped that can’t move on because of what they have done, or thats a lie, it was just laid out there by Michael and Hurley and a six year mystery was resolved in less than a minute.

Flash Sideways Differences & Similarities

• Hugo / Hurley is considered ‘lucky’ he was very wealthy in both times, but was also plagued by bad luck, so far no mention of this and Grandpa Tito is still alive (died of a heart attack the day Hurley won in the MTL)

• Hurley was previously in Santa Rosa for guilt from a deck collapse, but here he never wound up there and was just visiting it for the first time

• Libby never met Hurley until they were on the island, but she was in Santa Rosa well before at when Hurley was also there, but he didn’t remember that in the MTL

This Episode is packed with 42% more Flash Sideways

Loved this episode, only when Daniel started talking about how he thinks he may have used a nuclear bomb in some other life did my opinion decrease any. Which is not because of the direction of the plot, I had leaned most of the season that the flash sideways are a creation, an alternate universe because of whatever they did that changed the course of time. This is seemingly confirmed since now Daniel has knowledge of his “other self” as does Desmond and Charlie. I was more put off by the way he just laid it out there, because well it was kind a crazy.

Desmond wakes up from his sedated sleep of the past three days to find out he is back on the island and his son and Penny are safe but not with him, oh yeah and here is his good buddy Widmore that needs a favor. And if that isn’t enough to make him want to beat someone with an IV stand, the island isn’t through with him yet.

It has been ZERO days since our last accident

Widmore’s science crew is powering up the magic shed and they accidently fry one of their own. One of the crew goes to check the solenoids and some dimwitted goon decides to throw the breaker without doing a safety check. This at least saved the bunny and angry phone calls from PETA (what was up with that rabbit, looked like it had a new leg growing out of its chest) Regardless of this accident, they figured to check it out on Desmond to see if he really is the only man in the world known to survive a catastrophic electromagnetic event, because doing it once isn’t enough for Widmore, no not by a long shot.

Widmore tells Des that after they fry him which won’t hurt, much, he is going to be asked to make a sacrifice.

No whoosh sound noting it not so much as a flashback, forward or sideways, in the same way Desmond’s flashes happened in The Constant. After some floating through the clouds, we are taken to baggage claim and Des is looking for where to pick up his bags when he encounters Hurly and Claire, though they do not seem to know each other. Continuing the mirror motif, we get a glimpse of Des’s reflection.

“You’re the Top You’re the Coliseum, You’re the Top You’re the Louve Museum”

Desmond walks into Widmore’s office and they greet each other was such enthusiasm I almost expect them to break out in a song and dance number.

I found myself being the LOST Psychic this episode calling Desmond’s sharing of Widmore’s very expensive scotch,(that Des was previously not fit to drink) Because he is sooooo indispensable and nothing is too good for him. My oh my is this over the top. Probably this flash sideways is the most extreme with its difference compared to all the others so far. No in this reality Widmore and Des are like peas and carrots.

Desmond’s first task is to pick up Charlie Pace from the LA lockup and bring him to Widmore’s wife’s benefit where Drive Shaft will be performing with Daniel Faraday…um excuse me…Daniel Widmore, the musician, not physicist.

And the Creepiest Character in the Flash sideways award goes to Charlie Pace

Charlie has gotten very creepy, maybe because he is dead in the other reality, but to me this guy was not our Charlie. He tells Desmond about his near death experience on the plane and how he saw his true love (Claire) and then some sodding idiot was standing over him who had the audacity to save his life, sheesh, what kind of town is this where people save each other’s lives.

Charlie decides to take Desmond on a magical mystery trip off the pier into the very same marina Des is shot at three years and another reality in the future. As soon as the car was submerged I immediately shouted..NOT PENNY's BOAT! And sure enough, psychic moment number two happens when Des is trying to get Charlie’s door open and Charlie wakes up and puts his hand on the door, just as he did in Through the Looking Glass, except with this very doll like creepy smile. Des has a flash of Not Penny’s boat and with it, some familiarity, and a memory?

They make it to the hospital, and when Des gets his MRI he receives more flashes of his times with Penny and the birth of his son Charlie.

Show me your hands and step away from that manifest

Eloise looked like she was going to soil herself when she turned to see Desmond at the party. They had never met at this point and she takes the news of Charlie going MIA very well. When she over head Desmond wanting to know about Penny though she gets involved and says someone has influenced his way of thinking, it’s a violation and Des wasn’t ready to know anything, whatever it is he is looking for he should just stop. Well thanks person I just met, think I will go back to following these amazingly real and weird things that just happened to me.

“No it wasn’t a dream, it was a place and you and you and you were there”

We have seen Minkowski, Jack, Charlie, Charles, Eloise and Daniel this episode and finally Penny. Daniel lets us know he is a musician, he has the hots for a red head (Charlotte) and he may have blown up a nuke at some point…well not in this life. Desmond seems to handle this information extraordinary well, perhaps since part of him knows all about these type of things.

Daniel’s feelings about Jughead confirms that he is aware of it, and the producers have always confirmed these sideways are to show what would happen if the plane landed safely in LA but to pay attention to any differences. With Dan’s knowledge of the nuke, and Des’s knowledge of Penny and Charlie it eliminated the idea these sideways flashes are a “what if scenario”, where this was the same exact flight. Case and point this episode with Desmond being on the plane.

Besides Dan’s omission about how he set off a nuke in some other life, my only other disappointment in the episode was Desmond's creepy interest in getting the manifest from the flight, I guess because him and Charlie were on the flight together and had this vague knowledge of another life could be why, but Daniel wasn’t on the flight, why assume the other passengers would be affected by this? And then when I thought about it some more, I wondered if perhaps Desmond in the car was fully aware of himself from his island life, a piece of him left behind when he awoke from his fainting in front of Penny.

In Dan’s words Desmond is “miraculously special”, not just because he can survive a cataclysmic electromagnetic event, but because he is conscious of both his consciousnesses. When he woke up from OZ with Widmore standing over him it seemed he retained what he just learned of himself from the flash sideways. He was holding his hand out as if Penny was still holding it when he fainted. And like The Constant, when he was flashing to the time he was in the army he was not aware of his island self at all, even though he was just on the helicopter, it was if he switched bodies. Because when we would regain consciousness on the freighter he would know what he knew from when he just was in the 90’s, only with his contact with Penny did it all come together for him. And I think that is what happened at the end of the episode.

The rules don’t apply to Des because he is has the ability like Eloise I imagine, to be the consciousness of both time lines equally, as both halves, so he cancels himself out in a way.

See ya in another life Brother

This episode confirms the sideways is connected and possibly created by the main time line and I get the impression that the show is heading in the direction where we will find the sideways has created the main time line. Forming a perfect chicken or egg scenario, a complete circle with no beginning and no end. This is also much like the compass paradox where Richard gave the compass to Locke so he could give it back to Richard so Richard could give it back to Locke, to give it to Richard and so on, and so on. But as I have always said, it doesn’t matter which came first, either way chickens make eggs and eggs make chickens.

I was thinking this was the proof that the sideways is an alternate time line due to Jughead exploding and possibly sinking the island or at least being a catalyst that will sink the island sometime during 1977-1988 this is why when the plane flies overhead in this altered reality the island is at the bottom of the ocean. Thus debunking some of my own theories, but then I looked at the whole timeline stretched out, I noticed something.

I do think Jughead is part of the reason there are these 2 scenarios, but I am thinking that it going off isn’t what sunk the island, maybe it not going off did.

LOST Episode 6.10 The Package…it’s not a what, it’s a WHO…Welcome to Whoville

Kwon-centric
I normally find Sun and Jin centric episodes to be of a slower pace though more cinematic. And this episode was much different, chock full shooting, pregnancy, subtitles, Desmond, search for electromagnetism, ceasing to be, and them teeth on Keamy, a lot going on.

Smoke can’t go on the water

So all of the names that aren’t crossed off need to go together to get off the island. Sayid is numb and is told by the man in black he is better off this way for what is coming. Claire is an emotional basket case still pondering if she wants to kick Kate out of the plane after it leaves the island. And Fake Locke as the Smoke Monster can’t swim.

Jin is fed up with life in zombie camp and wants to go find Sun, he is not even finished packing when Widmore’s people tranquilize the camp and collect and bring him to room 23 over on Hydra Island. Zoe is revealed to be a geophysicist and is trying to find the pockets of electromagnetism on the island; they discovered Jin of the seventies had signed off on the grid maps from the Dharma Initiative back when he was working for them. Jin demands to see Zoe’s boss and Widmore is all nice and shows him some cute pictures of Sun and Ji Yeon they happen to have found on the plane, he then tells him a bunch of crap about how he misses his daughter too and that this is why Jin needs to help him stop the Main in Black from leaving the island. Because you know, everyone they love will just cease to be.

Widmore let's Jin know that the package on the sub, likely the same thing in the locked room Sawyer noticed, is not a What, but a who! and that Who is Desmond! hmmm Fake Locke is also not a what but a who.

Look out for that tree!

On the other side of the island Sun is also feeling pretty frustrated with everything while she is off in her old garden that seems like it is a 100 years old. Fake Locke shows up to bring her to Jin. She does not believe him and runs off through the jungle knocking herself out from running into a tree. When she wakes up she can only speak Korean although she understands English perfectly well. Richard returns and is all ready to go to Hydra island and destroy the plane, oh real Locke would be so proud.

Sun after a mini temper-tantrum that you really can’t fault her for having eventually comes around and Jack is much more serene now also, as though he is on the happy pills. He found a tomato that no one told to die and was stubborn and he picked it (I hope they eat it so it doesn’t just rot, of course I guess them picking it just killed it after all) He assures Sun they will get her and Jin together and off the island.

“I don’t like secrets”

Fake Locke goes to Hydra Island to talk to Widmore about giving him Jin back, since Jin is one of his people. Widmore denies his whereabouts and Fake Locke remembers real Locke hearing Widmore warning him “war is coming to the island”, ironic part is Widmore had followed up this statement with “If you’re not on the island when that happens the wrong side is going to win.” He leaves there but has sent Sayid over to the sub to see what is in the mysterious locked room that Sawyer had noticed.

Off Island

Ms. Paik Mr. Kwon Welcome to Los Angeles

Flash Sideways begins at the airport with Sun and Jin leaving after being questioned by costums for having some 25,000 dollars on them, undeclared. Of course since they can’t speak any English, and there seems to be no interpreter they are let go without the money since that requires paperwork. The two of them go off to a swanky hotel where the staff was kind enough to give Sun an Ocean Front room. (Mirroring her “ocean front” tent on the island)It was officially made clear they are not married as many suspected when the airport officials addressing Sun as Ms. Paik, and no rings of course.

In this time line, Sun and Jin may not be married but they are still hot for each other, Jin tells her he loves her and the questions start to unravel about why they aren’t married yet since he is working for her Dad. When Sun wakes in the morning she lets Jin know of her secret account and her trip to LA for some “shopping” was just a clever ruse on her part to escape her dad’s clutches and run off with her man.

You Better Knock Three Times

When Keamy knocks at the door, Sun is checking herself out in the mirror and she appears to have some concern over something about her appearance, much like many of our other survivors in the flash sideways. Mirrors have been used throughout the entire show and their meaning is still up to interpretation.

Keamy and Omer show up at the hotel to meet up with Jin since they missed each other at the restaurant. So it would seem to be that in this world Keamy still works with Widmore, who works with Paik and all the goons, appear to be together also. The only connection between Sun, Jin and the rest of the main time liners is Widmore. All of our other characters are inter-tangles with each other, but these two were not connected to anyone, until we see Charles connection to Suns Dad in season five.

Patchy the patch less interpreter

Mikhail AKA Patchy is “Danny’s friend” who must also be one of Keamy and Omar’s friends and is able to translate Jin and Sun for them, he goes off with Sun to the bank to get Kemah’s money only to find her dad closed her account, damn it.

Jin gets a bump on the head because of Omar’s lack of attention to detail and Keamy lovingly cleans him up even though he is planning on popping him once he gets his money. Well the heart wants what the heart wants.

Sun and Mikhail go to the restaurant after Sayid has been there doing his dirty work, Jin has successfully freed himself with Sayid’s help and a gun fight between him and Patchy ensues, leaving Patchy now in need of a patch and Sun possibly shot and oh yeah, pregnant…guess his boys can swim here or she is preggers with someone else’s baby.

Flash Sideways Similarities

• Jin and Sayid in both time lines when they first are around each other, Jin is restrained.

• There is a language issue with Jin and someone else.

Flash Sideways Differences

• Sun and Jin are sneaking around but not married. She was looking to escape her Dad, in the main time line she was looking to escape Jin, was married to him and was having an affair. But she only got on the plane out of fear.

• Lost is not the type of show that we can make assumptions with, so we don’t know if Sun really can speak English or not. On the island she had many people to go to where she wouldn’t be found out. We also do not know if Jin is the father of her baby or if she is still being fixed up with the same man that was teaching her English and could of impregnated her before but didn’t.

• Patchy has no Patch

• Desmond is what was locked in the Sub (answered that fast)

• If Fake Locke gets off the island many of the survivors would “cease to be”

Ab Aeterno “A Very Long Time Ago, or the Beginning of Time"(Lost episode 6.09) Recap and Analysis

A long time coming, and as many fans have theorized Richard is indeed from the Black Rock, and we have more information on the Black Rock, probably all we will ever get also,with only 7 episodes left until the Lost finale.

Tuesday’s episode answered Richards back story, and added to the aspects of game play within the show. Man in Black / Smokey, and Jacob were making their play for Richard and Jacob won giving MIB the white rock.

No flash sideways, very little island time – mostly Richards flashback

Ab Aeterno

Opens with Jacob visiting Illana in the hospital telling her she needs to protect six people that are candidates to replace Jacob. He mentions this is what she has been preparing for and it seems to be very upsetting to her. The scene picks up later after Illana is healing in mid conversation. Jacob then tells her she needs to ask Richard (Ricardos) what to do next after they are at the Temple.

When she asks him this on island as they are all sitting around the campfire, he goes a bit crazy laughing about how he doesn’t know what to do next, and tells them they are all dead, and this isn’t an island, that they are in hell. “This isn’t what you think it is, we are not on an island we never were” He believes Jacob is telling lies and it’s time to go listen to somewhere else, so he marches off into the jungle to find FLocke. Illana wants to go off after him because she believes he does know because I guess Jacob would never lie to her.

Suddenly Sun has all the answers? Sun fills Jack in that Richard is going off to talk to Locke, who is not exactly Locke as Ben points out.

Picture it Tenerife the Canary Islands, 1867

Richard riding on a horse back to his “house” to his wife Isabella who appears to have consumption / TB. He rides off to the wealthy ignorant doctors house who would not go help but would give him medicine for a price ( which Richard just didn’t have enough) Richard offers to help work off the debt, but this guy could care less (must be a republican) and in a heated moment and minor scrabble, Richard kills the guy by accident. Once he returns home his wife is already dead and he is taken to prison moments later.

The priest who visits him can not absolve him of this mistake, and says only penance will help which he cannot do since “he doesn’t have time to do anything” since they are about to hang him. Richard is reading the bible, Luke, 4 37 ( which is about Jesus asking a demon to come out of a man, and the demon does without harming the man, the reports of Jesus spread throughout the land) Richard though is teaching himself English and lets the guy know he and his wife wanted to travel to the new world. Mr. Whitfield comes as a representative of Magnos Hanso and purchases him from the priest.

Through a rainstorm much like the one Rousseau’s crew experienced when they crashed on the island, the black Rock was hurled onto the island breaking apart the statue and crashing about a mile into the jungle. The mystery of why the ship was in the middle of the jungle now solved. Before the crash one of the slaves below deck believed the statue was the devil seeing it all ominous off in the distance, and it was guarding the island. Interesting since we originally were told Smokie was the security system of the island, and has also been referred to as evil incarnate by Dogen.

The crew awakens to discover most including the Capitan are all dead. Then things get even better for Richard when those not dead were slain by Whitfield, because he fears its kill or be killed, “if I freed you it would only be a matter of time before you killed me” due to being shipwrecked with no supplies or fresh water. Smokey comes in and takes out the remaining crew and Whitfield before he gets to kill Richard, whom he must of found interesting, took some photos of him as usual and was gone. Maybe he took pity on because he was also trapped, or he figured he would be a candidate for the game him and Jacob are playing. Hard to say what are the intentions of a pillar of black smoke.

Richards Life Sucks the Big one, Should Make you Feel Better about Yours

All of this must be weird enough for Richard whose life just went into the shitter before he wound up there, with the death of his wife, going to prison and about to be executed to be saved by being sold into slavery, now they crash which he survived, next he is about to be killed, but is spared four times now, I guess when your destined to live, your destined to live. He survives trying to get himself free from his chains, he can’t reach the water that is pouring in the ship, and if being around a bunch of dead bodies isn’t bad enough, here comes a boar to come eat some of his fellow traveling companions all while he is trying to loosen the nails from his chains.

He is first visited by his dead wife who believes they are in hell, saying she has seen the devil and when she looked into his eyes all she saw evil. While she is trying to free him, we hear Smokey coming, so thoughts on her being Smokey kind of evaporate. We hear here scream and Smokey leaves so Richard gets to lose her all over again.

I Fell into a Burning Ring of Fire..and now I am Just the Smoke from the Fire

Sometime later the man in black(MIB) appears with some water and he has been here (in hell) and that he has been there a long time. He also says he doesn’t know where Richard’s wife went and believes “he has her now”. The Man in Black tries to strike a deal with Richard, he frees him and just asks for the small favor of killing the devil in return, since this is the only way to get out of hell. This will also allow him to be with his wife again. He warns him to not let the devil speak or it will already be too late, since he is very convincing. Very reminiscent to what Dogen told Sayid in Sundown about the man in black, with the same looking dagger.

Richard is confused how a dagger could kill some black smoke, then MIB confesses he is the black smoke, and Isabella was not running from him, but from “him”. He couldn’t do anything to stop him, and he interrupts Richard to tell him he is not the only one who lost something. The devil betrayed him and took his body, his humanity. Of course it doesn’t dawn on Richard why this guy would want him to go kill the devil, why didn’t he do it after all, or why not go with him. What is he really concerned about his welfare?

“Still Think Your Dead!”

Jacob though jumped Richard once he saw him and the poor guy was still very confused and believed he was dead and was in hell and he is just looking for his dead wife. Which Jacob tells him that it wasn’t his wife he saw. Jacob proved to him by trying to drown him in the ocean he was not dead.

He also tells him about his own rules on visitors.No one comes inside the foot of the statue unless he invites them in. He says he is not the devil but is the one who brought the ship to the island. Sure he wants to prove the MIB wrong, but why?

One of the most important moments of the show happens when Jacob explains to Richard a little bit about where they are. Explaining that evil is like the wine in the bottle swirling around and the island is like a cork that is holding hell, darkness unable to get out because it would spread. Cork is the only way to keep the darkness where it belongs.

He goes on to explain that the man he met believes people are corruptible because it is in their very nature to sin. Jacob brings people to the island to prove him wrong. He says everyone there gets a fresh start, their past doesn’t matter. When he finds out everyone before him has died Richard asks "well, if you brought them here why didn’t you help them?" Jacob wants them to help themselves if he intervenes then they don’t learn anything, knowing the difference between right and wrong is meaningless if he has to step in. When Jacob asks Richard why he thinks he should step in, Richard points out if he doesn’t MIB will…and thus seals the deal on the job. Jacob gives a look like, “well I never thought about that.” Richard can be the intermediary to people he brings to the island, his representative.

Jacob Cannot Bring the Dead Back to Life on Request, he can not Absolve Anyone of their Sins, but Eternal life? Gotcha Covered!!

Jacob gives Richard a white rock to return to the Johnny cash,i mean Man in black(lol) I imagine as a token of his “win"; in the inside joke of a game they are playing. MIB’s offer still stands if Richard ever changes his mind, and he gives him the necklace of his wife, that he must have dropped on the ship. Richard buries it and when we get back to our time he is digging it up. It took Richard 140 years to change his mind and admit he was wrong, he starts yelling to get MIB to come out, but only Hurly does. Because Richards wife sent him. She finally after all this time tells him it wasn’t his fault that she died and he has suffered enough. The main reason she found hurly was to tell Richard to not let the MIB leave the island. Otherwise they all go to hell.

Nah Nah I won Richard!!

The episode closed with a flashback of Jacob giving the MIB the bottle of wine for him to “pass the time”. They discuss that MIB wants to leave but Jacob can’t let him while he is alive, and MIB states he will kill anyone who keeps him from leaving. Jacob gloats that MIB got his present of the white rock, and is slightly gloating. Jacob leaves him with the wine and MIB smashes it. (Another way to get the liquid out).

Could be that this moment fueled MIB's plan, it is not fully clear still what these rules are, but it is very clear there is a game going on as we have all noticed with all of the games referenced throughout the show. Answers were given more or less, but the big one of WHY is still elusive.

ReCon (LOST episode 6.08) – Recap & Analysis

Sawyer –centric episode featuring his flash sideways and his current whereabouts. I have to say this episode was ok, but not as exciting as last week even though it was full of action, still with only eight more episodes of Lost left before the final season is over I want to enjoy all I can.

Sawyer is pissed off and banging chicks

Sawyer, excuse me, James Ford in the X universe is now on the other side of law & order, because at one point in his life he knew he had a choice to be cop or a criminal and chose cop. However he is still kind of pissed off. His partner in this X reality is Miles (cute) the flash sideways begins with Jim in bed with a woman and the whole, oops look at all this money you weren’t suppose to see con trick goes down. Only this woman doesn’t buy it and pulls a gun on him, and does not believe him when he tells her he is a cop and they have the room surrounded. So he says his “safe word” La Fleur (nice) and in bounces the cavalry.

His parents are still dead, still conned by Anthony Cooper Locke’s dad, but this time he knows the correct name, and was able to obtain that in Australia. We don’t know how he got the name or if he ran into Frank Duckett, and if he possibly killed him by accident. The bigger mystery though is, what is the deal with Cooper? In Locke’s flash sideways we find out his dad is still in his life, and he even has a photo of them hunting or fishing. So what could be different that makes Cooper still have a relationship with Locke?

Miles fixes Jim up with Charlotte who works with his dad at some museum. Which is nice to know Pierre made it off the island, wonder if he is up to at the “museum”. Charlotte and Sawyer seemed to be an unlikely pair, with their animosity towards each other on the island, and who knows, maybe in some weird twist this is why. After dinner and romp with the love machine, Charlotte looks for a T shirt and stumbles upon his “Sawyer” file, which he promptly freaks out about and tosses her out on her ass at 3 in the morning.

The next day after breaking up with Miles, breaking a mirror and watching some Little House, Jim makes his way back to Charlottes with a sunflower ( must be his flower of choice, since he gave the same type of flower to Juliet before)where she is not forgiving and tells him he had his chance.

Since things didn’t work out with Charlotte he tries to patch things up with Miles by doing something that rarely happens on LOST, telling him the truth and filling him in on what he is hiding. During their heart to heart a car slams into the car they are sitting in and the driver runs away from the scene. Miles and Jim catch the crasher to find out it is Kate where he explains with amused surprise one of his tag lines” son of a bitch”.

On Island

The episode began with no previously on LOST, and we see Sawyer heating some water to bring to a sleeping Jin in Claire’s tent. Jin is a bit freaked out, and tells Sawyer Locke is not Locke and he is not leaving without Sun. Sawyer assures him, they will not do so.

Fake Locke has Sawyer go survey /on a recon mission, where Sawyer does find the plane, a pile of dead bodies, and a chick (who he does not sleep with, yet). As they go walking off to the beach to head back to the main island, Sawyer starts to become suspicious of all her questions and demands to know who she is. Much like his sideways, she whistles and out pops some goons with guns. They take him to their leader which is Widmore and his new shiny sub. There is also a mysterious locked closet on the sub, and the last time there was a mysterious metal object holding something, it was Illana’s trunk with Locke’s dead body. Maybe Widmore finally found Christian’s body, either of them? I do wonder if it is a person though, and probably alive. But if not, then I vote Christian, or closet full of shoes. Widmore and Sawyer have a little sit down and Widmore finds it sad about how little Sawyer actually knows, but doesn’t tell him anything, so I guess he doesn’t feel too bad about it. Sawyer basically tells Widmore what he wants to hear, that he will march Fake Locke to him and they are not to harm his people, and let them leave. He relays the info to Locke when he returns. He is basically working with Locke, but also knows these people need to fight amongst themselves, and Sawyer is ready to go home via the sub when they are all distracted by it.

Our only interaction with Sayid is through Kate when they are taking a rest on a log in the jungle. Sayid is very much in zombie mode, very out of it and when Kate asks him if he is okay, he says “no” in a creepy way. They get interrupted though by creepy Claireso when she tackles Kate and puts a knife to her throat.

Crazy on you, going go crazy, crazy on you

Kate and Claire have a bit of a cat fight, and Fake Locke intervenes before Claire kills Kate by slapping Claire and telling her she is being inappropriate. Kate goes off to cry and Fake Locke goes to talk to her and explains why Claire went all crazy. He acknowledges his accountability and that he needed to give her something to keep her going, so he lied that the others had Aaron, giving her an enemy. Kate should know what this is like, because her enemy has been the others, and was her step-father before she ever got on this island, and also had a lot to do with the circumstances that sent her there, the first time. Fake Locke puts it simply that when Kate told her the truth all that anger, all those feelings, had to go somewhere. Kate pretty much knows at this point, she is not talking to the real Locke, since he was off the island and is a “dead man”. He tells her how his mother was crazy and that it influenced how he turned out, the issues he has had to work through, that he is still working through them, and it didn’t have to be that way. Kate asks him why he is telling her this, and he responds “Because Aaron now has a crazy mother.” Claire and Kate kiss and make up later, and she said she was grateful, though I was waiting for her to grab Kate’s gun off her back.

Fake Locke, A.K.A Man in Black, A.K.A Black Smoke Thing

The more I see of him, the more I notice how determined he is, and how he wants to be free. This week though he reminded me much of real Locke, and I have to say I am still not convinced he is the bad guy. Between his conversation with Kate, the way he handled Claire, he speech to the Others he has displayed wisdom, humility, honesty and deceit, determination, and a sense of order and calmness that just changes how the Black Smoke Thing is perceived. Though I don’t forgive him yet for Eko, at least he forgave Sawyer for his rudeness.

I am also wondering how and if Illana knows he can’t change into anyone else, since he did change into Alex back in Dead is Dead last season? Why could he change then, but not anymore?

Rabbit Watch

Because I have a minor obsession with Watership and Down and its connection with LOST, I decided I will dedicate a small section at the end of my recaps of any Easter egg bunnies. Feel free to leave comments on any you may have picked up that I have missed. Oh and I finally watched the movie Watership down again, still creepy, can’t believe my parents had me watch that as a child.

When Charlotte is looking for a T shirt she picks up the book Watership Down (knew I would see that again) off of the dresser.

First of all I just loved this episode, it lived up to the expectations the producers have been placing on LOST all season so far. It did answer questions and it did have a more similar feeling to season one with the roaming through the jungle. (But truly, nothing will be like season one, but season one). It was very reminiscent to Season 3 when any of our lost friends came back from being captured by the others, when Jack, Hurley and Richard came around that familiar hedge of the beach while Sun was fixing her tent.

Back to the start

This was a Ben centric episode and featured his– sideways –flash. Dr. Ben Linus the teacher is much different than the Ben we know on island. He does not share the Machiavellian talents of his island self, he tried too, but he did not have the confidence that Ben Linus on the island has. Much of the episode was set in jungle, the abandon beach camp and Boone Hill, and as a bonus we did get to see the Black Rock again, nice!

Those who can do, those who can’t teach, those who can’t teach, teach Gym

Ben the teacher is very passionate about his job and cares about his students; he has a doctorate in European History and is teaching to High School students. Today’s lesson was about Napoleon and when he was banished to the island of Elba. “He had his title but to be banished with no power he would have been better off dead.” I don’t think the Ben we have known all this time would actually feel this way, since he was banished, and he didn’t wind up dead. Ben in the X universe seems frustrated in the fact that this is all there is, and it never seemed to dawn on him that he could strive to be the principal until Locke mentioned it at lunch. Ben on the island would likely already have become the principal, and thought of some scheme on how to do that. This Ben through the tutoring of his favorite student (who happens to be Alex) came upon some information he could exploit. Ben Linus on the island would have found a way to use this information better to have achieved entirely what he wanted, including getting his Alex into Yale. But this Ben is a bit wet behind the ears, and not so good at it, so when it came down to a choice, he did the right thing. He still got part of what he wanted, he got his club back, and he got to help Alex. Since the principal basically turned around and manipulated him.

The rest of Ben’s life looks also disappointing. He is living with his father who looks ill and is on Oxygen. Their relationship looks much better which is a definite plus, and Roger looks to be less of a douche. Probably the whole dying thing and trying to get in to heaven, but who knows at this point. No sign of any potential Mrs. Ben Linus anywhere. I wonder when was the last time Ben had a date? No indication that he has any kind of love life, or any kind of life outside of school and taking care of his dad. During this we found out Ben is trying to keep his dad healthy by feeding him organic TV dinners, and that they had regrets about leaving the island. Because who knows what Ben would of became. Well, he would not feel that way if he saw what he did become when he was on the island.

Back to the Island

Ilana seemed to have suspicions on how Jacob died and had Miles do his thing on Jacob’s ashes. Where he let Ben’s lie out of the bag. They decide to go back to the main beach camp where the survivors, had survived for those three months years ago, because it is familiar and they could have their backs to the ocean. I imagine Smokey can’t cross the water for some reason. This also puts them near the place they buried Locke, hopefully it will serve some purpose in the future. (No pun intended) Ilana didn’t take the information about Ben killing Jacob too well and eventually had Ben chained and digging his own grave. She was obviously distraught between her job there to protect the candidates, that is not going well; and since she felt Jacob was the closest thing to a father, he was just killed by Ben, not a good day.

Richard wants to go out with a bang

In the Jungle, Hurley and Jack are on their way to the Temple, which Hurly really does not want to head too since Jacob warned him that someone bad is heading there and they should stay far away. But Jack not knowing where else to go decides that is where they should head back. Until Richard shows up from nowhere and tells them everyone there is dead. And he did not see any of their friends so he assumes they made it out. They follow Richard over to the Black Rock in the jungle and he tells us he hasn’t been there since he first arrived on the island. So as many have speculated, Richard is from the Black Rock.

Richard is only going there to blow himself up with the dynamite that was in the ship. He is also fed up with the fact he has devoted all of his life (possibly 200+ years) to service of Jacob, because Jacob told him there was a reason for everything with this and he had a plan. Unfortunately he never told Richard what that plan was, and since he is now dead, Richard feels like he wasted his life and now wants to die since he has no purpose. He confirms for us that he is not a vampire, cyborg, or time traveling and that Jacob made him the way he is, by touching him and giving him some gift, which now feels like a curse. No matter what he does he can’t kill himself (island won’t let him) and this is very similar to what happened to Michael when he was off the island and everything was going wrong. Perhaps this shows some part of “the rules” since Jacob has touched many of our Losties this may explain why they didn’t die when the plane blew apart so high above the island, why so many (Locke, Sawyer, Sayid) have survived gun shots, why Rose is cured of her cancer and any number of other scenarios that did not end in death. Well except for those that it did end for. Jack’s communication skills have improved and with a bit of a gamble he shows Richard that he is special too, and though Richard wanted to blow himself up, he wouldn’t be able to if Jack was there. He explains about the lighthouse and seeing his childhood home, and luckily for Jack the dynamite does not go off.

The Chosen

Locke shows up while Ben was digging his own grave, and Ben was really doing a very terrific job, it was so uniform! Locke lets him know he didn’t want him dead and was returning for him. The relationship between these two has been complex and deep throughout the show. The role of leading and following has changed over a few times, and now even though this Locke is not OUR Locke, he still seems to need Ben for something. He tells Ben he is leaving the island with some other people and of course Ben is the natural choice to take care of the island while he is gone. He does some magic to release Ben from his chains and lets him know he will be at the Hydra station on the other island. Ben escapes, and Ilana fallows in hot pursuit, he could of just done away with her but he had the opportunity to put things right and choose that as opposed to killing, good for him he learned something after all.

But he is the only one that will have me.

Ben’s speech to Ilana was very moving and cry worthy in my opinion. He fully explains his regrets about what he has done with Alex and Jacob, and pretty much that all of his choices were for a man that didn’t care. He also tries to show Ilana he understands the pain she has right now. He didn’t expect her forgiveness because he doesn’t forgive himself. But what proved to me that she is a good person was her response to what he explains too her and that he was going to go to Fake Locke because he is the only one that will have him. The best moment in the episode for me was Ilana’s response “I will have you”. And Ben was surprised and returned back to camp.

They were all reunited at the end of the episode, Jack, Hurly, Sun, Lapidius, Miles, Ilana, Ben and Richard. And while they were hugging or longing for hugs on the beach. (It really looked like Ben and Richard could both use a hug; maybe they should hug each other.) A submarine is approaching with Widmore and crew; I guess he found the island again. I wonder about Widmore’s comments to John Locke last season that he would do everything in his power to prevent John from dying because he needed him on the island or the wrong side would win. Braum mentioned to Miles he was on the wrong side also, which was Widmore’s side. He could have meant that Locke being there was going to help his side win because he is so super awesome, or he could of meant that his mere presence would of allowed his side to win, because Locke really sucks that much. Kind of like having the worst player for a sport being stuck on the opposing team, it’s good for your team. Not saying that as fact, just trying to understand what he meant, and who the hell Widmore really is.

Regrets, I’ve had a few, well on this show too many too mention

One of the things that LOST has always done, is showcase a connection between the island story and the off island story, focusing on an attribute about the character that the episode is centered around. In this show, it was about Ben Linus, his regrets, his choices. This carried over brilliantly to an overall theme of this episode. What would have happened to Frank Lapidius if he flew the plane? I guess he would have been eaten by the smoke monster and someone else would have piloted in Ajiria 316. Roger had regrets about them leaving the island and wondered what would of become of Ben if they stayed on the island (oh just a manipulative mass murderer, who killed his own dad, and chose his power and an island over his daughter) so guess it was for the best…not that they would know that. Richard seemed to regret his choices to the point he wanted to be blown up, well at least he wanted to go out with a bang. Ben though had the biggest of regrets, not just because of what happened to Alex, but for what he did to Jacob. He seemed most regretful to what that did to himself.

So maybe the Flash sideways – could be what happens from the bomb, people leaving the island and never coming there to begin with – a version of what happens when the plane doesn’t wind up there…

OR

Could it be what originally happened, before Jacob intervened…this can explain the connections we have seen throughout the show that seems to make no sense, a few sure, but as many, no way. Makes sense though if they lived in the same town and what not…we get to see their lives, and how they have regrets and wonder what would have happened if they made different choices…Ben staying on the island…which we have seen all along.

If you go to ABC’s site, they plainly state the flash sideways are not a flashback, flash forward (or epilogue to the story) or an alternate timeline and it posits what would of happened if the plane landed in LA. This is false already, since it is not what happened, things are different; the people on the plane aren’t same in both who is physically on it, and how they are as people. It is not as if the plane just landed there and we are taking the story on. I will write up a separate article about this topic.

And one final thought about Jacob and the MIB, maybe they are two halves of the same person (or twins) since Jacob touching someone means they can’t kill themselves. Maybe Locke tossing the rock off the scale as an inside joke was literally an inside joke. Or maybe they couldn’t kill each other because of some Other Code, that has to do with the springs, and this is why Widmore and Ben cannot kill each other either. One thing I do know is this show has consistently shown us the light and dark sides of all of our characters.

Sun Down (episode 6.06) – The trouble with Bunnies and Baseballs – Recap and Analysis

So after watching this episode my sister and I concluded that rather than giant hamsters powering the island, from its underground lair as referenced by Ben in Season 5, that perhaps he was telling a half truth and it is bunnies instead. Sounds crazy, well no more than anything else from this show.

We started thinking bunnies because of the fact that Keamy ( hate that guy) showed up to cook some eggs for Sayid, and his awful grin reminds my sister and I of the teeth of a rabbit. But before I go on about the ridiculous amount of comparisons to bunnies in the show, let’s recap what just happened, or what we think happened.

This was a Sayid centric episode, beginning in the flash sideways with Sayid visiting his brother and kids, and guess what; his brother in this world is married to Nadia, the love of Sayid’s life. Sayid may or may not be working with the CIA. He told his family he was translating documents and this was why he was in Australia for an oil company, maybe so, maybe not. I figure this does make a good cover story, which fits with working for the CIA as he was in the original timeline. One thing we do know is he knew where Nadia was already in this time line, so he was not on the plane to go find her, but he was to go see her.

Omer, Sayid’s unable-to-break-a-chicken’s-neck-brother had gotten into some mafia-style trouble and wanted Sayid to “take care of it” since he was formerly an “interrogator for the republican guard” in this reality. He even mentions that he was trying for the last 12 years to forget it, and he also reminded us again “that he is not that man anymore” He really wants to believe this, but the whole rest of the episode he lives up to being “that kind of man”. He should just stop saying that. The next day Sayid’s brother is taken to the hospital from being stabbed outside his store, while Sayid and Nadia are rushing through the hallways of St. Sebastian hospital, they pass Jack.

I am not 100% certain, but I also thought the scars that Nadia had on her arms previously seemed to not be there. So was she never captured and tortured?

Later on another Omar from Widmore's crew approached Sayid before he was to go pick up the kids and took him to one Martin Keamy at the restaurant we previously had seen Naomi take Miles to prove his talents in season 4. Keamy offers to make Sayid some eggs, denies being involved in the stabbing of his brother and just talks about how his brother owes him some money.

Sayid is one lean, sometimes mean, killing machine

Something sets Sayid off, at the restaurant and just like that, he kills everyone. Next he hears some banging in the refrigerator/ freezer to find a tied up Jin.

Back on the island Sayid and Dogen get into a big kung fu fight after Dogen answers a few of Sayid’s questions, (so I guess if they tell you anything they have to kill you). Because Dogen goes crazy and starts trying to beat the crap out of Sayid only to stop from killing him because his baseball fell to the floor. Which was probably his sons baseball, he tells us later this was how he came to the island. One night after drinking from celebrating he went to pick up his son from his baseball game and caused a car accident. Jacob came to him and told him if he came to the island his son could live, but he would never see him again. I think Dogen didn’t kill him then (this time) because the baseball was a reminder of how he was responsible for the loss of someone else’s life. He then calls Sayid evil and to get the hell out..

Sayid is banished but only for a few minutes, because now Fake Locke and Crazy Claire-so are here and wanting to see Dogen, so Dogen sends Sayid out with a sword and tells him, this monster will show up as someone Sayid knows but is dead and he will have to stab him in the chest before he says anything. And this of course will prove that Sayid really has some goodness in him, and he will somehow I guess be saving the day. Sayid does this and Fake Locke just kind of looks at him with pity, takes the knife out and offers it back to him. Since it didn’t work, he wonders why they sent Sayid out to kill him when it wouldn’t have worked so they must have figured that he would kill Sayid. And since they have already tried to do this three times now but only succeeded once, Sayid believes him and goes to deliver his message. Right afterwards, Dogen and Sayid have a heart to heart about the baseball and Sayid decides to drown Dogen. He finishes off his killing spree with Lennon. Total Sayid killing machine body count for this episode 5.

I think we sympathize with Sayid despite his killer instincts because everyone is manipulating, using or just plain lying to him. Dogen told him to prove how good he is by killing someone who was coming to cause harm, and he attempts to do this. Then FLocke uses him to go back and kill Dogen and Lennon and promises him the one thing that matters to him. Ben used him to go on a killing spree, to eliminate all of “Widmore's people” to protect his friends. The CIA used him to tell on his friend by promising him Nadia, and because his friend killed himself and no one was going to claim his body. Sayid stayed in Sydney and extra day to take care of it, thus winding up on the island to begin with. The way I see it, Sayid is someone you want on your side, he is as loyal as they come. He has willfully given his life for these people he just met to help them find rescue. I think as long as you don’t threaten harm to people he cares about, Sayid is a good guy.

Get the F out of Dodge if you want to live, otherwise Smokey is cleaning house, seems like a fair deal.

Sayid tells everyone that Jacob is dead and that they didn’t have to stay there anymore, and they need to leave the temple before sundown and can leave the island. Otherwise those remaining will die. Most of the others take this pretty seriously and decide to take this offer and get out of dodge. It seems that with Dogen dead, the magical ash isn’t so magical anymore.

Kate has come back right before Sayid meets up with FLocke, and finds out Claire is there in the hole, which was kind of ironic since she left to go find her, but if she just waited, Claire would of come to her. Claire did not look too pleased about Kate raising her boy which really proved Dogen to be right about how she is confused. She genuinely seemed glad to see Kate up until that, and Kate did explain they couldn’t find her, and now she is back to rescue her so she can be with Aaron. Claire didn’t seem too grateful at all, which she should be or the real Claire would be, and then she just laughed that she wasn’t the one that needed rescuing. Kate didn’t get to mention how Claire’s mom has Aaron, and that she is now out of a Coma…might have melted her poisoned heart?

Meet the X Sayid, Same as the other Sayid

Sayid in X is very much the same as Sayid on the island. He is still the tortured torturer, still killing people, still longing for Nadia, only now she is alive and has kids with his brother. This really is just a different kind of hell. Kate was much the same to me in X also, just like she is on the island, it was mostly Jack and Locke that seem different somehow.

The lines of evil and good are still blurred, here in this episode alone Sayid was asked by Dogen to go kill someone to “prove he is good”. And we know, killing isn’t really considered a bad thing on this island as the others have picked off plenty of our crashers over the past seasons. Sayid killing the men that obviously had no regard for any life that tried to kill his brother doesn’t seem bad, or good. Protecting his family is good but killing people who kill seems kind of hypocritical also. We don’t know if FLocke asked Sayid to kill Dogen, but there is a chance he did, which doesn’t make him look so good either. In fact, I have a real problem with both groups being so judgmental as if they are somehow the ones that are right, but if they were, then they wouldn’t need all this trickery, manipulation and well being so judgmental.

Catch a falling star and put it in your pocket

The song originally was something sweet that Claire’s father (Christian) had sung to her when she was a child and it was also the song that played on Aaron’s mobile in his nursery at the Dharma station. But here at the end of the episode it was cryptic with Claire’s crazy sounding voice and slow rhythm of the orchestra, giving it a new and scary meaning. And for the first time in a very long time, it rained. I don’t think we have seen any rain on lost since the time skipping. It never seemed to rain when they were in 1977, and it hasn’t rained since they were back.

As people scatter and panic to get out of the temple, Miles meets Illana for the first time when she beats down a door in a room he was attempting to hide in. Miles is at least reunited with Lapidius. Ben goes off to get Sayid whom was sitting by the spring with the bodies of Lennon and Dogen floating below. Ben tells him it’s still not too late, but and Sayid said it was for him in a creepy way (guess the infection reached his heart- oh yes I guess it did because FLocke brought up Nadia)

Kate tried to get Claire when the smoke monster thundered across the hole Claire was in, across it like a locomotive with people screaming. After the dust cleared, everyone was separated, Kate followed Claire out of the temple and saw FLocke for the first time, he seemed curious on seeing her. As Kate follows them out of the temple and the eerie sound of catch a falling star is playing in the background, she picks up another gun from one of the many dead bodies lying around.

The smoke monster came through and slaughtered whoever was left, and left a mess much like when the dog came in and tore apart the bunnies in Watership Down. Which I loved as a book but as a film scared the crap out of me when I was a child, I still haven’t re-watched it

Sawyer was reading Watership Down, “a book about bunnies”, way back in season one. And it has been referenced in at least 3 different episode. The story is about the exodus of eleven rabbits from their warren because one of the rabbits has a vision that “danger is coming”, they go on a perilous journey full of danger, death, and trickery. During their journey they come across a utopian warren but find out it is a trap full of snares and traps and they would basically just become the farmers dinner.

As far as other references to bunnies we have the time traveling rabbits of Dharma, Ben’s pet rabbit, the rabbit he uses to trick Sawyer when the pretended to put a pacemaker in him that would explode his heart if he got too excited. And Ben also references the rabbits from Mice and Men during this same episode. Just 2 episodes ago, Sawyer pulls a gun on FLocke and brings up the same book, and how it didn’t have a happy ending. The looking glasses Dharma logo was also a rabbit, and truly everyone in this show has been following their own white rabbit off in the jungle and down the rabbit hole.

And the angel of death in Watership Down that is a monster of sorts that kills off the “evil pursuers” and protects the “good rabbits”…it’s a black cloud in the shape of a rabbit.

The Light House (6.05) Recap & Analysis

“You would think we would have seen all these massive structures” my sister to me during this weeks episode.

This must be one big ass island with the way things just appear and disappear even without us really noticing. Or are all our characters so self-absorbed that they just don’t notice planes flying over head dropping off supplies, and big lighthouses sitting down beach? All and all, great episode that featured Jack in the flash sideways (which BTW is in the same order as season one so far). And of course created new questions, while it answered little.

As Fake Locke told Sawyer last week, Jacob sure did have a thing for numbers, this time degrees on the dial, and a magic mirror that shows us the coordinating persons house. Thanks Jack for being a selfish jerk and breaking the mirror, Hurley didn’t get to see his house.

Meet the new crazy woman missing her baby, same as the old crazy woman missing her baby

As we found out at the end of last week’s episode Claire is still on the island, can’t really say if she is alive or not. I am leaning towards her being one of the undead, maybe this IS zombie season? In her tent she had the usual Rousseau items, guns, dynamite, and cradle with fake baby. The cradle was not the same one Locke had made her, but it did hold a handmade item, Wilson from Castaway but as a baby. And besides the “baby “she is not alone, her dad and “friend” apparently are over for tea and cookies all the time. I have to say she good at being creepy, I was waiting for her to just knock that others head clean off. So when she put the ax in him, I wasn’t as surprised as Jin was. Same goes for when Fake Locke just dropped by.

Jack has a memory problem?

This week’s flash-sideways are of Jack, who so far seems to be the only one with memory loss. He may have remembered he had a son, but didn’t remember him playing the piano or his appendix being taken out at a young age. Or did he just wonder if he had a dream about being on a deserted island were two good looking chicks took it out? His memory loss even appears to have erased any possible issues he may have with his son and their relationship. His son seemed concerned about Jack’s approval of his piano playing and distant to him. But Jack seems genuinely surprised by this fact and in no way wants their relationship to be like his was with his father.

Hurley and Jacks little adventure

It was nice having Hurley and Jack going through the jungle, the jungle itself just seems so much brighter than it was before. They run into Kate ( who was not invited even though Jacob touched her in the past) as she is refilling her bottle of water, which by the way was what she was doing at the barracks when we last saw her. She was going off to find Claire, by herself in the jungle. She wished Jack well in an uncharacteristic way and off she went, not fearing Smokie I guess. Jack and Hurley’s next stop was by the caves where we revisit with Adam and Eve from early season one. Hurley runs some theory about them being Adam and Eve. Back when the island was skipping through time and it stopped in 1954 and they were all being attacked on the beach by the others, I had wondered then if it was possible that those two skeletons where from this incident. Jack reminds us he was following his dad who “wasn’t really there” back in season one (White Rabbit). And now I wonder, was he following his dad, or was he following Fake Locke, before he was in Locke? Is there more than one smoke monster? Are they all smoke monsters maybe, or have the ability to be them (the undead)? For his dad or Smokey whoever it was, did also lead him to where there was necessary water and shelter. So, whoever it was, did want to keep them alive.

Black and White

There has been a motif of black and white in this show since the very first episode when Locke explains the rules of backgammon to Walt. “One side light, one side dark”. But there were a few more this episode with the piano, the cookies David was eating (Milano’s…love them) the finding of Adam and Eve to remind us of those black and white stones again. Which I do believe Jack had put in his pocket at the time, wonder what he did with them?

Answers are given….sort of

Overall it was a good, low impact episode. I laugh every week when they tell us that answers are being given, and the time for questions is over. So what was answered? There is a magic lighthouse that Jacob could see into the lives of those on the magic wheel, Claire is crazy and has been living out in the jungle but not alone, and we learned more about Jack in the other storyline but that created new questions. Did he really forget about surgery he had as a child? Is David’s mother Jack's former wife? Does Dogen have any memory of Jack? Why is Jack special? How did the light house work, was he looking into their past, present, or future, or a parallel time? I guess as usual, we will have to wait until next week to find out more.

The Substitute (6.04) Recap and Analysis

“The time for questions is over, answers given” Lost commercials tell us

“Well that’s not true; we just spent 45 minutes arguing about things we agree on.” My sister said to me during this week’s episodes. And it is true, as masterful as always, LOST has answered some questions, but with more and more new questions. Sure we are seeing what happened to Locke in the X universe, but because we are seeing it, there are new questions on how it worked out between him and Helen and is he in the wheel chair for a different reason? It also brought up some new questions about the strange kid that was spooking FLocke, and when did those names appear in the cave? After they were on the island or before? And why was Kate’s name not on there?

It was nice to see that in the X universe, Locke is with Helen. We know the reason they broke up before was because of his inability to let go of what his Dad did to him (steal his kidney and push him out an eight story window leading to his paralysis, you know not the kind of stuff easy to get over, but certainly worth getting over) I wonder then what caused his “irreversible” condition now?

Hurley and Locke’s paths intersect when Hurley’s HUGE car is parked too close to Locke’s car. Preventing Locke from getting his ramp down so he can get in his car. We knew in the other universe Hurley owned Locke’s company this time we get to see them interact, and Hurley does seem much more confident and happy here, just how you would expect him to be since he is such a genuine guy. At least here things make sense a bit. Hurley gives John the phone number of his temp agency he owns after John lets him know he just got fired by that douche bag Randy Nations. Don’t you just wish you could tell Locke, that in an alternate universe Randy is working at a Chicken Shack that gets blown up but a meteor?

Rose intersects with Locke also; she is the office supervisor of the Temp Company that Hurley sent Locke to. She gently tells Locke to focus on the things he can do, which I guess is the positive to being told what you can’t do. She gets him set up as a substitute teacher (nice easter egg on studying the human reproductive system…as chapter 4)

We also got to see some Ben Linus (European history) in the X universe, one where he is a teacher, and still kind of pompous but that was really all we know. That he drinks coffee but likes Tea, and does not like having to clean up after other people.

“Who are you, because sure is hell aren’t John Locke.”

Didn’t take Sawyer but 5 minutes to realize FLocke is not the real Locke, unlike Ben, Richard and Sun who just spent the past few days with him. Sawyer immediately picked up on the lack of fear that was running through Locke, even when he was “pretending he wasn’t”. The John Locke we have known and loved was a believer, a man of faith, and a much better man than Ben will ever be (and he is very sorry he murdered him) They still keep showing us John’s body, and not sure if that means anything besides a reminder, at least now he is buried, thanks to Sun. Weirdest funeral ever. Locke in the X world seems to not be much of “believer” Helen seems to believe in miracles and signs (she was even wearing a shirt that had the word Karma written on it). She was excited about the fact that Locke ran into Jack. But Locke here does not seem too convinced.

Don’t tell Locke what he can’t do…either of them

Sawyer could see the spooky kid, that to me resembles Jacob, and it also seems this kid, spooks FLocke. He only says one thing to FLocke, which was to remind him he can’t kill “him”. Which we assume he is referring to Sawyer. While Locke is off chasing the “invisible boy” Richard comes out to warn Sawyer, because he believes FLocke wants him and everyone Sawyer cares about to be dead. Sawyer is suspicious of him and all FLocke can manage to tell him is he is trapped and he use to be a man…so what is he now?? He is a who? We know he can normally change his face, but now he is stuck this way.

Down “Jacobs” Ladder

FLocke and Sawyer climb down a shaky old ladder off a big cliff that goes to some hidden caves, which had ,multiple broken ladders all hanging there. In the Cave we see the familiar black and white stones on the scales completely balanced. Locke takes the white one and tosses it in the ocean and tell us it’s an inside joke. I think Jacob represented the white stone, and now FLocke has shifted the balance.

Inside the cave there are many names written down, most are crossed off. FLocke tells us this is why they are all here. Jacob is looking for a candidate to replace him as the protector of the island. Sawyer can choose to do nothing and see how things play out, he can accept his nomination, or he can run away to go home with Flock. Which he wants to do, but I we don’t know exactly what that involves; since he didn’t bother to explain his stake in all this, why bother showing Sawyer anything. He is not just being friendly

On the wall we saw some of the names of our castaways with very familiar numbers. But since they were last names, it is not completely clear who they go to.

Didn’t see any of Kate’s names, we know Jacob touched her also, as he touched all of them if we are referring to the Shephard being Jack. It should be interesting to see what happens from here. Did Kate go back to the temple? Where will Sawyer and FLocke head to next? Next week’s episode shows Hurley taking Jack somewhere for Jacob and is titled The Light House.

LA X Recap and Analysis ( 6.01 & 6.02)

LA X (episode 6.01, 6.02) Los Angeles the Variable and Alternate Reality

After a long eight-month wait, LOST was back to its mind bending flair this past Tuesday night. We were last left off with our groups in two different times. In 2008 we have a “fake Locke”, Ben, Sun, Frank, Richard and the Others, and our Shadow people gathering by the statue to find out what the heck is going on with Fake Locke; who was just busy getting Ben to kill Jacob. Over by the Swan and in 1977 are heroes Jack, Sawyer, Hurley, Kate, Sayid, Miles, Jin and the very injured and brave Juliet were trying to change the course of time with one Hydrogen bomb. This episode begun with where we left off at the end of season five, and after a big flash and a slightly different sounding whoosh we are aboard Oceanic 815 once again. In brilliant fashion LOST has managed to get us lost again with the new Flash Sideways story telling. With the desire of following both paths, the producers decided to delight and confuse us this season by exploring both situations, the continuing story on the island and alternative to what would happen after the detonation of the bomb. The title of the episode LA X was stated by Darlton as being done intentionally and was not just a typo. In most comics, the letter X represents an altered reality. And knowing what big comic fans they are, I would assume this is the meaning behind the X.

This two part episode was loaded with irony and numerous life and death themes. Juliet is believed to be dead, is alive, and then dies. And not even being a Juliet or Suliet fan, I still found it painfully sad, she was a damn hero! Who knew? Poor Sawyer, that guy needs a big hug. Sayid is near death and is brought to the dirty waters of the temple to save his life, then dies, and then is alive. John Locke is discovered by Ben to be truly dead; the fake Locke retells Locke’s last thoughts before he died as being sadly he “didn’t understand.” Fake Locke also lets us know he is the smoke monster, right after he kills about four people. We discover Jacob is indeed dead, by appearing to Hurley and giving him some instructions to save Sayid. Jacob has seemed to have gone out of his way to bring Sayid back to the island, for reasons not known at this point. And aboard 815 X Charlie stops breathing (again) and Jack revives him (again) and then Charlie tells Jack he was supposed to die, well some people don’t know how to say thank you.

There was a lot of irony on the plane to LAX, Boone telling John he was “pulling his leg”, right before he tells John that if the plane went down he would follow him, which in our original timeline led to his death; Jack needing comfort from Rose when he previously gave her comfort; and the fact Jack tells Locke “nothing is irreversible” about his paralysis, and this whole X reality exists because of Jack’s new belief in this idea. All of which beautifully tangles itself, continuing the circle of life.

I have entertained a crazy scenario that what we have been watching was an altered past, following a story line of what happened as a result of someone messing with the cosmic flow of the “islands universe”. I wonder now, could the reason Eloise keeps saying god help us all, and they keep saying they have to “save the island” is because of the sinking of the island in some other universe?

But perhaps I am over-thinking it. Some facts I do know are the following based on what the producers have stated.

1- The Flash Sideways is to show what would happen from Juliet successfully detonating the bomb
2- Fake Locke is the Smoke monster, but the Man in Black is NOT fake Locke, and thus not the smoke monster.
3- Jack, Sawyer and crew are now in the same time as Sun and Frank and group which should be early 2008

So since they said the Man In Black is NOT Fake Locke, then I am wondering if Jacob was always talking to the smoke monster. Since the MIB and him were discussing loopholes, and when Jacob sees him he says “guess you found your loophole”. So did the smoke monster eat the man in black and then impersonate him to Jacob??? Some other things I wonder are, Who lies in the shadow of the statue? I know its “ who will save us all”, but right now it looks like it could be Locke, well I suppose if a shadow could even be cast there since the statue remaining is just a foot, with 4 toes.

Widmore had stated there was a war coming and that he wanted to make sure Locke stayed alive because he needed him on the island. Braum had said to Miles the same type of thing about a war coming and they told him Widmore was the wrong side, and they were on the side that was going to win. They work for Jacob, they say they are the “good Guys” but we have been reminded a few times that usually the people who say they are the good guys, aren’t. Jacob seems like a nice enough guy, but I was never really a big believer that the Others were good guys. But one thing we should have learned by now, is that what is good and what is bad is not so clear cut. Good and bad exist because of each other and together often in people, the fact these people are having a war though may not be so much about what is right or what is wrong, so what the heck is it about? What is war good for, absolutely nothing…say it again.

Since we can’t be sure of the things we aren’t sure of, let’s pick apart the things we can see with our own eyes. 815 X had the following differences, along with it not crashing.

1- Jack only received one bottle of vodka
2- Jack seemed not so confident about flying, and Rose comforted him
3- Desmond is on the plane
4- No Michael, Walt, Shannon, and no knowledge about the tallies or if Claire is pregnant
5- Hurley said he is lucky ( maybe he is was being sarcastic though, Locke also told Boone he went on a walkabout)
6- Jack seemed confused by a small cut on his neck
7- Sun and Jin may not be married since the customs official when talking to Sun referred to her as Ms. Paik, her maiden name

Some Similarities
1- Jack saved Charlie, along with help from Sayid
2- Boone would follow Locke
3- Kate is still a fugitive and has a thing for running
4- Locke is still in a wheel chair
5- Hurley won the lottery
6- Jacks Dad is still dead and he was in Australia for the same reason
7- His body is still missing also
8- Sayid is looking for Nadia, has the same picture

One of the things that will likely become clearer over the weeks is why some of them were on the plane; did Abandon still go to meet Locke to tell him about the walkabout, what would be the point of that since there is no longer an island for Locke to land on? Did Walt’s Mom not die? Is sawyer a con-man? Where Rose and Bernard in Australia because of her cancer, or does she not have it? What is interesting is their lives are still going to be intertwined in some way, maybe not in the same ways as before. Also, we will get an idea to see which version is better. I firmly believe though, the island adventure has given them all the ability to grow as people, and even if the events were horrible they endured, they somehow seemed better for it. Those that left did not necessarily find their salvation, in the end Locke tried to kill himself, and Ben helped him fulfill his destiny. Jack developed an addiction problem and trust issues with Kate, Sun was left to raise her baby alone but did stand up to her dad, but was ready to commit murder to avenge her husband’s death. Sayid did reunite with Nadia only to lose her again, and well Kate seemed to grow up, learn to be less selfish but was living a lie and in the end wanted to put things right.

What Kate Does (episode 6.03)

What does Kate do during this episode? She runs a lot, she runs from the cops in X, and runs after Sawyer and away from the Temple. She also takes care of Claire, which is also something she has done in past. Kate is a complex character, she is someone who has been incredibly selfish with her actions, following people when told not to, not thinking about how that might adversely affect them, trying to get on the boat by persuading Sun to poison Jin. But she has also been very unselfish in her “bad choices” also. The whole reason she is on the run is because she was “taking care of her mom”. She got caught in Australia when she could have gotten away by making sure the farmer wasn’t in his truck after it had crashed and was to explode, despite him turning her in for the reward. And in X, she went back for Claire after she realized the woman she hijacked things belonged to a soon to be mom. And if she was really a horrible person, I don’t think she would of thought twice about the items in that bag, or Claries picture or Aarons whale. Which by the way, I wondered if she recognized since it was the same whale Aaron had when she was his mommy. I still can see Aaron standing there holding his whale when Jack in a drunken rage yelled at Kate and said she wasn’t even related to him, Thanks Jack, yet another moment where I am reminded of what a huge dick you are.

Though this episode to me wasn’t as interesting or action packed as other episodes, it was still necessary since they spent a great deal of time showing the connection between Kate and Claire. It was interesting to see how Claire just trusts Kate no matter what, even when Claire doesn’t know Kate, and Kate hijacks her cab and has just held a gun to her head. If Kate was insecure about whether Claire would want her to raise Aaron, she shouldn’t be, I don’t think Claire would have it any other way.

Infection

We also learned that Sayid was dead, and is now allegedly infected. Probably the same way Roussous crew was infected, and how Claire is now according to Dogan. I got a huge kick out of Jack swallowing that pill, it was a nice piece of Drama that the others didn’t see coming. But we still don’t know too much about this infection except that once it reaches their heart (how clichéd) they will no longer be the person anyone knew. A darkness growing in them, is this related to the dark territory on the island? Who did this happen to in Dharma, is this why they wore the hazmat suits and took inoculations of a vaccine for an illness they never explained?

30 years later

Sawyer leaves the temple to go back to his former home with Juliet to dig up a box he had buried in the floor boards. In it was a ring he was going to give to her to propose marriage, Sawyer of all things was really happy about settling down, but sadly believes maybe he is suppose to be alone, and tosses the ring into the lagoon. That was all very heart retching and all but what I really noticed was the fact that the box was actually there, now the rest of dharma-town makes a bit more sense.

Introducing Ethan Goodspeed

Ethan is still a doctor, an OBGYM, but no longer has the last name of Rom, but rather that of his parents, Horace and Amy. A lot less creepy too, but I have to say when he turned around, still kind of creepy. Interesting that in X he was still taking care of Claire. Wonder if he will get all infatuated with her, who knows maybe he will be the new Charlie in X…or maybe Charlie will be her Charlie?

Communication

One of the continuing themes in this show is the poor communication skills of our characters. Many times I have noticed if they just asked this or that, maybe there wouldn’t be a need to blow up so many things, run away, or shoot so many people. Finally Jack is demanding answers, but acknowledging they are not going to give them up.

Mind games and Free will

It seems there is this unwritten or possibly written rule about requiring the losties to make choices on their own, except it almost is never on their own. They are normally being manipulated for the outcome to be what the others want it to be; giving them a false idea they have a choice. Maybe that is what Free will really is, a false illusion that we do make choices when really there is a destiny involved that is pulling our strings. I don’t believe this with everything, I think this is what lazy people believe or those that do not want to take responsibility for themselves and their choices.

SOME LIKE IT HOTH Recap (5.13)

Chang - “Miles I need you.” Miles – “You do?” I have to say after these lines I was filled with both pity for Miles for the obvious breaking of his voice, and glee for the same reason. Big tough Miles who doesn’t care about his dad, suddenly choked up by the fact he needs him. Beautiful!

This episode was Miles centric, showing us some of his backstory of him off the island, dealing with his gift, his first meeting with Naomi, and his fish taco hitting the payment when being picked up by van full of Shadow people. His backstory, atfirst didn’t seem like it was necessary until you look closer. When he is being auditioned by Naomi we learned the dead body was on his way to Widmore with some intel. Intel we previously were lead to believe was something Widmore did, that he staged the plane crash. Alteast that’s what Ben wanted us to think. But now, I am not so sure, and you shouldn’t be either. Naomi also painted a picture of Ben being a mass murderer and the dead would basically be all around throughout the island for Miles to communicate with to help locate Ben. Though, they never did need him for that. Ironically, his big dead people moment was with talking to Naomi’s body.

We also have a better appreciation of Miles “powers” which Hurleys is better. That he can basically hear a persons final thoughts. Kinda like a residual haunting, I wonder if Hurley deals more with Intelligent hauntings, which is a better power. Maybe he needs special equipment for that, I think he had some kind of dustbuster looking thing that he turned on when he was talking to that woman’s grandson in the “confirmed dead” flashbacks.

Miles looses his fish taco, but he could be enlightened. He doesn’t seem too interested in that. Now the whole 3.2 million mystery is solved, somehow that one was a little disappointing, though funny. Just to show not every mystery has to be something big.

So what does lye in the Shadow of the Statue..Jimmy Hoffa? Sand? Hasn’t the statue been gone for a long time so there would not be ashadow to cast for a while?

The Daddy issue continues, Miles was one we didn’t know much about so we didn’t see if he had one or not, and as certain as communication lacks on LOST, anotherone bites the dust. This leaves Juliet now, otherwise I believe we have seen everyones back stories with all there glorious daddy issues. We also got more of reminder of how Roger is a jerk, more so from drinking, and this reminded me of how Jack and Ben have something in common after all. Well something besides having to control everything.
