HOW TO: FLAT IRON CURLS

Don't be intimated by the idea of curling your hair with a flat iron! It's such an easy process and you can use any type of flat iron (as long as it has rounded edges). Follow along as Leah goes through each step and if you get lost, be sure to reference the above photos.

Take a section of hair and begin with your flat iron approximately 1-2 inches from the root. How wide your section is depends on how big you want your curls. The bigger the section, the bigger the curl and vice-versa.
As you run the flat iron over your hair, you'll want to hold the iron as vertical as possible while rotating the iron about 180 degrees.
When you've reached the end of your hair with the flat iron, grab the hair around where you started the curl and using your fingers, twist it and set it aside.
Repeat until your whole head has been curled!

Leah started out by running a dab of Davines' Oi Absolute Beautifying Potion through the ends of her hair, taking care care to stay away from the roots to avoid an oily look.
The flat iron Leah used for this tutorial is a BaByliss Pro.
Once her look by using Davines' This is a Sea Salt Spray to add some texture, volume, and make her curls just a little beachy-er.
To finish out her look, Leah used Davines' hairspray, This is a Medium Hairspray.

INTERVIEW WITH PRISCILLA GISH,BEE'S KNEES OWNER

This week not only are we kicking off the official Bee's Knees Hair Studio blog, but we're also beginning a series that will highlight each one of our seven stylists! Our goal with this series is that if you've been in before, that you might get to know your stylist a little bit more, and if you've never been in, that these short interviews will help you make a decision about which stylist is your best fit.

Our first in this series is Priscilla Gish, Bee's Knees stylist and owner. Enjoy learning a little bit more about how Priscilla managed to open The Bee's Knees in just two months, why she entered the industry, and a little bit more about her in general!

Why did you become a stylist?

I knew from the time I was a little girl that I was going to do hair. I would play with my Barbie's hair using food coloring and scissors. When I was in high school I would do my own hair as well as my friends' hair and makeup for prom and dances. Beauty in any form has always been a passion of mine and I feel extremely blessed to have been able to pursue my dreams from a young age and be where I am today.

How long have you been in the industry?

Since 2005. As soon as I graduated from high school I thought that I would go to college and get a business degree so that I could one day open my own salon. One semester in and I realized I could not wait. After graduating Ogle within 9 months, I was immediately hired where I wanted to work. I interned through Aveda and learned a great deal about the industry and the corporate hair world. Everything I learned led me to where I am today, and I am very grateful for that experience.

So how did The Bee's Knees come to be?

It all happened after my husband and I came back from our trip to Europe. When we got home I felt the deep urge (for the first time) to go off on my own. I knew what I wanted, I just had to find it and I knew that once I found it that the rest would all come together.

The day I made the commitment, my husband found three potential locations, the third being the winner. The character of the building completely drew me in. Within two months, I found the product line I wanted to work with: Davines, formulated in Parma, Italy. My husband graciously set up the business aspects, and I brought in the design. Everything happened so fast, but flawless, and I knew it was meant to be.

Within two months the business was open and blooming. It is humorous to look at the original pictures compared to today. At first there were three chairs, the walls were crisp and clean, with just one shampoo bowl. I figured, eventually, over the next two years, more stylists would come in. Within six months, four out of our seven current stylists came on board. We had all worked together in the past and had great respect for each other. I couldn't be more excited for a team that is incredibly talented, responsible, that works well together in this unique environment.

How would you describe the environment of The Bee's Knees?

I must say, there isn't anything like it! In the salon industry there is the corporate world and the leasing world. The Bee's Knees is the best of both. One of the client's biggest annoyances is not being able to find their favorite stylist. I dreamed of a place where the stylist would want to stay, and we are all grateful to have found our home. The moment you walk in, the feel is fresh, warm, and eclectic with a vintage vibe. I work with local artists (Piranha Bear) to change out the wall art every season. We are constantly keeping up to date with the latest hair and fashion trends while using only the finest products.

Why did you choose to carry and use the Davines line of hair care and color products?

I respect Davines in their natural approach to color and products. The color is 98% naturally derived and the company believes in being true to sustainability as it affect the environment and the customer. We and our clients appreciate the care the company takes to explore ideas beyond the trends; from the ingredients to the packaging. However, we are not confined to one product line. We carry other product lines that we feel are necessary options for our clientele.

What advice have you heard that has helped you both professionally and personally?

What you put in, you are going to get out, so you give it your all. A positive, generous, and loving mindset will do wonders for yourself and your business.

Who are your style icons?

That's a pretty broad spectrum for me. I've always favored Sienna Miller's style and I love me some Rachel Zoe...and can't forget the Olsen twins!

When you're not working, what are you doing?

My husband and I are very active, so we like to be outdoors with our dogs and the kids. We are in the middle of organizing and renovating our house, so just every thing involving that. We love to travel, ride bikes, crossfit, and antique hunting is always a plus with my bestie.

You mentioned travel - what is your favorite place that you've visited?

Italy. I love the whole Italian lifestyle. They move at a slower pace and it allows you to take in the beauty that is all around you.
