Whitney Houston: is it really necessary?

Today was Whitney Houston's funeral. Because of this, I have largely ignored Twitter for the day.

Anyone who knows me knows that I'm a celebrity gossip addict and that I read Perez Hilton's site religiously. However, I don't get why we need to livestream and livetweet a funeral. Yes, Whitney was talented. Yes, her life should be celebrated - as should anyone's upon their demise (People like Hitler, Kim Jong Il, ect excepted), however there is absolutely no reason why this event should be a media fiasco and live streamed. Do you walk in off the street to some random person's funeral? No? Because live streaming a celebrity funeral is the virtual equivalent.

You didn't personally know Whitney, cut the shit. Honestly, I'm a little disgusted that this is an apparently acceptable practice now.

Anyway...that concludes today's rant.

DIY Microwave Popcorn

I realize this is probably a little late, considering everyone is watching the football game and stuffing their faces with other snack foods - however the consumption of snack foods in my house is what led tho this post. I could really give two shits about football, however for the sake of household harmony, go Patriots, so I'm sitting in the other room wasting my evening on Pinterest.

A few weeks ago, I popped loose popcorn kernels in a paper lunch bag in a microwave for the boyfriend - he was amazed and had no idea you could do such a thing. In case you fall into that category, let me enlighten you. You probably won't want crappy bagged microwave popcorn ever again.

What You Need:
1 Paper Lunch Bag
1 Tablespoon of Oil - I used canola, olive or vegetable also would work
1/3 - 1/2 cup of popcorn kernels

What To Do:
Measure out the kernels and dump them in a bowl. Pour the oil and mix. You can skip this step and throw everything in the bag, but the bottom of the bag gets way oilier and you'll have a puddle in your microwave. Once you've mixed the oil up into the kernels pretty well, dump it into the lunch bag. Sprinkle some salt in and fold the bag twice to close. There's no need to secure the bag closed beyond this. Put the bag in the microwave. I start with 2 minutes and go from there. Here you can use the standard microwave popcorn gauge: when popping slows to 1-2 seconds between pops, your popcorn is done. One day it took 2 and a half minutes, today it took almost 4.

When it's done, take your popcorn out and salt/butter/season to your liking. I find the popcorn is a little drier than regular microwave but SO much better. I have some buffalo popcorn seasoning from Target and with a little salt and a little melted butter...om nom.

There ya go, do it yourself microwave popcorn.

Finished product: Orange is the buffalo seasoning.

Pasta with Mushroom Gorgonzola Sauce

Step 2: Mushrooms chillin in a pot

I made this for dinner tonight. Based on the contents, this is obviously pretty bad for you - and I substituted light cream for the heavy cream the original recipe called for. (The original recipe was in a random cookbook I found at TJMaxx that I took a picture of - because honestly, the rest of the cookbook sucked and was definitely not worth buying.) However, despite the fact that it's pretty terribad for you, it was so freakin good.

Pasta with Mushroom Gorgonzola Sauce - Made to Serve 4.

You Will Need:
12 Ounces of Pasta (I used rotini, the original recipe called for fusilli. It all tastes the same and fusilli and rotini are the same shape...ish)
3 tablespoons of olive oil
12 ounces of sliced mushrooms (I used baby bellas.)
1 finely chopped clove of garlic (I used minced.)
14 ounces/1-3/4 cups light cream
9 ounces of crumbled gorgonzola cheese
Salt and Pepper
2 tablespoons of chopped parsley for garnish

Step 3: Shrooms & Cream

What To Do:
1. Boil your pasta according to the directions on the box. If it finishes before the sauce, drain and set aside.
2. While the pasta is cooking, heat the oil in a medium sauce pan. Add the mushrooms and cook on low for 5 minutes stirring frequently. Add the garlic and cook for 2 more minutes. Keep stirring.
3. Pour in the cream. Bring the mushroom/garlic/cream sauce to a boil and let it cook for a minute until it thickens a little bit.
4. Turn the heat down to low and stir in the gorgonzola. Let it cook until it's all melted. Don't let the sauce boil once you add the cheese.
5. Let it cook for a few more minutes until it thickens up a little more. Add some salt and pepper to taste.
6. Pour the sauce over the pasta and mix well.
7. Dole it out on plates and garnish with parsley.

Finished product. Om nom.

Blackout SOPA - FU Perez Hilton

This rant came to me today while I was at work. It took Perez a while to even post a single thing about SOPA today, which kind of lit the fire for the idea of this post - and then it's a bitch-ass cop out. GIVE ME A DAMN BREAK.

All sorts of sites went dark today in protest of SOPA and PIPA. You would think Mr. Activist himself Perez Hilton would contribute more than just a "SOPA sucks, I don't support it" post - especially when he scoops so much shit. If these bills were enacted, his would be one of the first infringers to go down. I think the world can survive without his gossip for a day (myself included, and I read his stuff daily).

The man has a vast readership, he should do something productive with that influence. Maybe if the vacuous airhead gossip whores who aren't aware of current political events find their favorite site blacked out, they might actually do something. Sorry Perez, a mere post doesn't do a damn thing.

Somehow I think if SOPA was a gay rights bill and people were blacking out in protest, he would be all over that shit like white on rice. Now I'm not minimizing gay rights and saying that they're less important than SOPA, because they're not. I just think Perez is being a hypocrite. He quits bullying celebrities so viciously because he doesn't support cyberbullying...yet he won't black out his site(s) (There's about 5 offshoots in case you weren't aware) even though SOPA and PIPA could royally fuck him if enacted.

Either way, I've respect for him today. Stop worrying about precious ad revenue (I sincerely doubt 12 hours of darkness would bankrupt him) and make a stand!

Anyway - this concludes my blackout day. Have you contacted your representatives in Congress and told them how you feel about SOPA and PIPA? If not, go do it. Blacking out only goes so far...complain to the people who have the power to change this crap!

I have no idea if this will work, what with my site being blacked out in support of SOPA, but I'm posting this for the benefit of those who subscribe to me via feed.

Go to the site, read up on SOPA if you're unfamiliar...and use the links on the landing page (you're gonna have to scroll) - which by the way was free-source code, I didn't make it myself because I'm not that talented - to find out who your congressional representation is. Use that information and obtain their contact info (their personal Senate/HoR page will be chock full of it) and bug the shit out of them. Email them, call them, whatever you prefer (although according to the page of one of my state's senators, Richard Blumenthal, mail is hideously delayed what with all that anthrax nonsense of yesteryear, so snail mail is NOT recommended) and tell them to not support this bill. Though Obama has vowed to veto, there is no reason WHY this should pass.

And Mr. Christopher Dodd - if you were still a senator I'd be disgusted. You have your head so far up the MPAA's ass, you would vote in favor.

So again, if this even works...if blacking out the site doesn't fuck up my RSS feed, please click the main link to this post, which upon opening will redirect to the blackout page. Read, find out who your Congress leaders are and do your part.

Yes, freedom of speech DOES have its limits and you can't post whatever the hell you please and get off scott free (and this is obviously not limited to copyright protected content, but speech in general)...I could post a flaming post about my boss (not that I would, she's awesome) and yes, I'm free to complain about her, but she could still fire me. Same goes for if I started posting derogatory things about the company for which I work, or our customers.

However, the internet should not be regulated by the US Government with an iron fist merely because a bunch of whiny, rich jerks at places like the MPAA are more worried about their bottom line than freedoms.

When I get home tonight, I will be blacking out this blog for a day in protest of SOPA. (click here for an explanation)

Although President Obama has stated he will veto this measure if Congress passes it, so as we stand right now the bill is a lost cause - I still want to do this. However noble the US Government's intentions are, it is inexcusable for them to even consider such an over-reaching display of "power" to effectively cripple the internet.

I realize that whining about it and blacking out my blog is like pissing in the ocean in regards to this issue. Therefore, I recommend you contact your congressional leaders and tell them how you feel.

I've been woefully negligent, I know. I've been too busy concentrating on the choo choo trains.

In fact, I spent an inhuman amount of time watching YouTube videos today...AND NOT WATCHING GREY'S ANATOMY. HORROR.

I also spent yesterday driving all the way across the damn state to watch Kelly Clarkson sing her face off for the 2nd time in as many months - this time at Foxwoods MGM Grand:

Also, other various crap has kept me from posting anything meaningful...the boyfriend had a nasty cough and unknown ailment (You would think after 6 vials of blood, a TB mantoux, and a chest X-Ray the VA could come up with something more meaningful than "Yeah, you don't have pneumonia", but alas, that is government for you) Took 3 different antibiotics - one of which that triggered an allergic reaction and 2 weeks to kick it - and you know in typical male fashion he was milking that shit for all it was worth :)

Anyhoo, have a looksie around my youtube & subscribe to my train-nerdery tumblr (which is more blog-y than tumblr-y...I was just too lazy to expend any effort to make a legitimate blog here on blogger or elsewhere. Happy New Year everyone! May the best thing that happened to you in 2011 be the worst to happen in 2012 ~~or some cliche stuff like that.~~

I have the worst willpower ever, so resolutions go to crap within a day for me - however I want to take this whole being healthy thing more seriously this year. And I want to embrace my inner train nerd some more and dedicate more time and effort to getting out and railfanning like this. I actually made a separate blog on Tumblr for that specific purpose (I'm lazy, and Tumblrs require very little effort to set up.) so as not to bore all of you who don't give a rat's ass about trains :) However, if you're interested, it can be found here and you can subscribe to the feed here should you not have a tumblr/can't be bothered to check it. I did pimp it with Disqus functionality, so people can leave their two-cents worth - as Tumblr as is doesn't do comments.

Seymour Station - look at the "platform" box.

Most people who know me know that I am a total train geek - and my specific geek-ness is in regards to the New York City Subway. However, Metro-North comes in a close second because they're more accessible for railfanning obviously. Why else would I have obsessed over something so ridiculous?

I worked a half a day today so I can get out early Friday because I have some Christmas shopping to finish up, and with the boyfriend off at a Magic card tournament in Newington (which he did fabulous at - I'm proud of him!) I had nothing better to do after I got out. Having watched an unhealthy amount of railfanning videos of Metro-North on YouTube last night, I had the unquenchable urge to shoot my own. After all my phone takes 780p HD Video, might as well use it, right? Being a little light on the bank account front, it's not like I could drive to New Haven and hang around Union Station - which is what I would have preferred to do, what with Amtrak, Metro-North and Shore Line East rolling through. However, in light of the lack of gas money to go trolling down to New Haven I decided to stick local and check out some stuff on the Waterbury branch line. I've never actually ridden the Waterbury line - service is way too infrequent for my taste, and the Waterbury Station is rumored to be really sketchy, but more on that later - so the fact that it's "new" interested me. I have however ridden the equipment used on the Waterbury line. Until last time I went to New York and went from Brewster, my station of choice is Danbury, and their branch uses pretty much identical equipment as it, like the Waterbury branch is not electrified - so they have to use diesel engines to push/pull coaches into/from connecting stations on the main New Haven Line (Danbury does have some direct to Grand Central service during rush hours though. Waterbury, you're SOL.)

First on my list was Seymour. I intended to shoot from Naugatuck, but their piss poor signage once you get off Route 8 leaves much to be desired so I had issues finding the station - and I was running out of time before the train showed up, so I went a handful of exits down Route 8 to Seymour instead. Seymour's station is pretty plain - and by far the worst looking one I've visited thus far. There is no platform to speak of - there's raised boxes, but when the train pulls up, people still have to hoist into the train. There's no ticket vending machine either, but that's a quirk of the Waterbury branch. The station house, if you will, is a cob-webby bus shelter type thing. I did get an awesome shot of the train coming in (video below), so all was not a wash.

Oh Waterbury.

After hunting down some lunch, it was about time for a train to terminate in Waterbury, so I headed over to that station. While sitting in my car until the expected arrival time of the train drew closer because it was all of 20 degrees and I didn't want frostbitten fingers, some cracked out lady came up to my car and knocked on the window. She wanted to know what time the next train to Bridgeport was. I told her, and apparently the answer wasn't good enough, because then she asked if I would drive her to Bridgeport. When I obviously told her "No, Get lost!" she got all indignant - "Well why not? You're going that way anyway" - No, I wasn't...and even if I was, I wouldn't...but I digress. The station lot is plastered with signs saying to lock your stuff up and take anything of value with you - it's been highly publicized that break-ins run rampant at that lot, which is logical - it's in a crappy part of Waterbury, it's unsecured, nobody's watching it - and it's mostly tucked behind a vacant building shielded from the road. Of course people are gonna steal shit, they can get away with it. As the clock ticked closer to arrival time, I got out of my car and headed up to the platform and sat on a bench. Window Knocker was standing in a bus shelter type deal at the opposite end of the platform tweaking out - she was obviously hopped up on something. A few minutes later, the train rolled up and I was surprised to see it was the return trip of the train I shot in Seymour - I noticed it was the same locomotive number as I was walking back to my car.

All in all, an afternoon well spent - and not without its' excitement from the Dirty Water Crackhead. I look forward to exploring more of the Waterbury line and more Metro North territory in general. I might have to shelve this endeavour until springtime though. Windy train platforms and cold temps do not mix :)

Sloppy but delicious.

Here's a really easy recipe for Red Velvet Cake truffles - it's pretty hard to screw up - and everyone who tried them raved about them.

You will Need:

1 Box of Red Velvet Cake Mix and the ingredients to prepare it (eggs, oil, and water)
1 Tub of Cream Cheese Frosting
2 Containers of Dolci Frutta - Doesn't matter regular or white chocolate, I used regular.
A lot of friggin patience.

Note: if you're more gifted at cooking/patient/crafty/whatever feel free to make the Red Velvet Cake from scratch, make your own cream cheese frosting, and melt some chocolate in a double boiler for dipping. I'm lazy.

What to do:
Make Red Velvet Cake according to directions. I used a wicked deep Pyrex dish and it took forever to cook, but that's whatever. The important part is that it bakes into a cake. Once the cake is done, let it cool completely. Then you take chunks of it and put it into a big bowl. (I did this before it was totally cooled - so after the cake was broken up in the bowl I let it sit a little longer and cool off entirely.) Once you break the cake up into the bowl, put at least half the tub of frosting and mix it in. Squish it through your hands, have fun. Keep adding some more frosting and keep mushing until it's moist and holds shape, but not too mushy and sticky. I ended up putting the whole tub of frosting in, which in retrospect I think was a little too much. Once the mixture is the proper consistency, roll it into balls (I did the size of a Lindor truffle) and put them on a surface prepared with wax paper - I used a plate, but a cookie sheet would probably be better, depending how big your freezer is. Ours isn't wide enough for a cookie sheet, hence the plate. Once you've balled up the cakefrosting mush, put them in the freezer for about an hour. When the hour is up - melt the Dolci Frutta according to what the container says. Dip the balls in the chocolate and lay them on wax paper. If they've hardened by the time you're done, then you can put them in a plastic container in the fridge for storage - or dig in. If they're still not set, put them in the freezer for 15 minutes or so, that ought to harden the chocolate up. I got sick of dipping mine, so I got sloppy about their placement on the paper, so they fuzed together, which is why in the picture you see red spots from where I broke them apart.

Voila, you're done :)

Like I said, when I brought these to work, everyone was raving about them - a pharmacist called them a "deadly delicacy", and then proceeded to ask me for the recipe :)

I'm not one for Christmas songs in general - and you will not catch me dead playing them before December 1st...these people who start blasting this ish the second the turkey is cleared away on Thanksgiving annoy me to no end.

However, this is one of my favorite Christmas songs. Even moreso than "Happy Xmas War is Over" by John Lennon and Yoko Ono, because Yoko's warblings ruin that song for me.

The jist of this post has been brewing in my head for a few weeks, but partly because of this status on Facebook from a favorite radio station, and stuff I've noticed recently, I feel the need to contribute my 2 cents.
Screw this PC Police "Happy Holidays" crap.
I'm serious. If someone wishes you a "Merry Christmas" and you're Jewish...or atheist or whatever...there is no reason to get bent out of shape. Take it in the spirit of the season and say "Thanks, you too". People should not be forced to say "Happy Holidays" for fear of pissing someone off. It should be used out of simplicity's sake and that's it. If someone slips and says Merry Christmas or Happy Hanukkah or Happy Kwanzaa, they don't deserve you reaming them or jumping down their throats. It's a stressful time - honestly people have more important things to worry about than if their slip of "Merry Christmas" to the punk-ass atheist chick who's ringing them out at Target pissed said cashier off.

I get it. Religious beliefs or lack thereof are a deeply personal thing. Personally though, as long as that "Merry Christmas" isn't accompanied by a 15 minute diatribe about how you're destined for hell unless Jesus saves you, there is no reason to get aggravated. If they do start pushing their religion on you, then by all means, get bent out of shape...I hate that BS too. However, sans attempt at religious conversion, smile, nod, and well wish them back. It's a gesture of goodwill, not an intention to offend you. LOOSEN UP.
If someone says "Happy Hanukkah" or "Happy Kwanzaa" to me, do I get pissed? No. Then again I'm not a fanatical Christian either.

Another thing I don't get is the PCing of religious holiday symbols. A Christmas tree or Christmas carol shouldn't need to be called a "holiday tree" or "holiday carol" (I've heard both). Last time I checked, neither Hanukkah or Kwanzaa used a decorated tree...and ffs, "Silent Night" is about Christmas. There are Hanukkah songs beyond Adam Sandler. I really don't see the point of masquerading something as what it isn't to not piss someone off. If I didn't celebrate Christmas, I wouldn't get pissy at the fact the tree is up wherever, nor would I call it a "holiday tree". Unless there's menorah or Star of David ornaments & kwanzaa ornaments on the tree, it ain't a holiday tree. I'd be enthralled with the pretty lights and think about that instead - because things like that mesmerize me.

Bottom line, the stick up the ass-ness regarding the winter holidays needs to end. Whatever someone wishes you in good spirits, take it. Also...the idiots who deliberately spell Christmas as CHRISTmas need to knock it off. I know the holiday is more about a fat guy in a red suit bringing presents rather than Jesus' birth these days, but that, to me, is as offensive as ramming your beliefs down my throat. Everyone knows the real story of Christmas. Whether or not they choose to celebrate Christmas because of Jesus or Santa is up to them. No need for you to get righteously religious and condescending about how "Jesus is the reason for the season"...though honestly Santa is why the Holidays are a retail goldmine. If people actually celebrated the birth of Jesus, Christmas wouldn't be so freakin lavish and stressful, so I suppose they have a point there...but still.

The other thing that annoys me is people who piss and moan about the holidays and how public displays are illegal unless all 3 are represented...and then they turn around and berate people for not having holiday spirit and goodwill and all that. Hello!? If you had the goodwill and holiday spirit you're babbling on about, then you'd shut the hell up about the town Christmas tree and the manger display on the lawn of a church and deal with it.

Pardon my ranty ramble, but this was something I had to get off my chest.

I've seen people on twitter talking about Pinterest for a while. It sounded right up my alley - a site to make a virtual pinboard of things like recipes & whatever that you find online. It's invite only, so I clicked the button for an invite a while ago, and just got the invite e-mail the other day and finally signed up yesterday.

The "Recipe" pinboard I've made since yesterday,

Let me tell you, it has been sucking up my entire weekend! Since the boy is so encouraging of my newfound cooking talent...("You're so much better at it babe, why should I even bother trying") and he's a willing guinea pig for the experiments - the man will eat anything not nailed down most of the time...I'm always on the lookout for new recipes and whatnot. I have scads of random bookmarks littering my phone and computer of recipe pages. This will definitely help alleviate that mess. They need to get cracking on an Android app and my love affair will be complete. Because right now, I think I'm going to have to email myself links of recipes found on my phone and add them to Pinterest on the computer. But whatever, everything will still be in one place. It would just be convenient to be able to easily pull up this pinboard when I'm at the grocery store. (I can use the desktop site on my phone's browser, it's just that it gets annoying after a while.) So, fingers crossed on an Android app. However, it's probably a blessing in disguise that they haven't yet made one, because this is eating up a lot of my time as we speak. Between the recipes (although Pinterest encompasses many interests, not just my delusions of grandeur regarding cooking) and crafty things I've found - glass cups out of liquor bottles anyone? - I will waste hours on this site feeling woefully inadequate about my cooking/crafting skills and conversely being inspired haha.
