INSTALLING KRAKATOA ON A WORKSTATION

Krakatoa for 3ds Max v1.6.0 has been compiled for the following versions:
- 3ds Max 9 (32-bit)
- 3ds Max 9 (64-bit)
- 3ds Max 2008 (32-bit), uses the same plugin as 3ds Max 9 32 bit
- 3ds Max 2008 (64-bit), uses the same plugin as 3ds Max 9 64 bit
- 3ds Max 2009 (32-bit)
- 3ds Max 2009 (64-bit)
- 3ds Max 2010 (32-bit)
- 3ds Max 2010 (64-bit)
- 3ds Max 2011 (32-bit), uses the same plugin as 3ds Max 2010 32 bit

Support for 3ds Max 8 was dropped in Krakatoa v1.5.0.
- You can use version 1.1.3 if you absolutely have to run Krakatoa in 3ds Max 8.

The setup program uses the Windows Installer.
- The install image is stored in an .msi file named KrakatoaC.J.M.B.msi where
  - C is the core version number, incremented when the core is refactored;
  - J is the major version number, incremented for major releases, e.g. 1.0.0, 1.1.0, 1.5.0, 1.6.0 etc.
  - M is the minor version number, incremented for "point updates" providing bug fixes and minor functionality changes, e.g. 1.0.1, 1.1.1, 1.1.2, 1.5.1 etc.
  - B is the internal version control system's build number, incremented each time a code submission is made for ANY Prime Focus application.
- By default, the installer will copy the software and supporting files (licensing, scripts, icons) for all compiled versions, but you may optionally choose to limit the installation to a single component.

 NOTE:
 Even if you have selected multiple versions of 3ds Max to be supported, 
 the installation wizard will configure the plug-in path of ONLY ONE 
 version of 3ds Max during the installation process! You can add Krakatoa
 to other installations of 3ds Max as described below:

Krakatoa can be added to other versions of 3ds Max by using Start > All Programs > Prime Focus > Krakatoa > Add Krakatoa to 3ds Max and selecting the location of the 3dsmax.exe file for the respective version.

 WARNING: 
 It is very important to use the above method for adding Krakatoa to 3ds Max, since the Wizard will not only locate and modify the plugin.ini file with the path to the Krakatoa DLR, 
ic Control 
 to the plugin.ini. If Helium is already installed in 3ds Max, it won't be added a seconbut also copy some other vitally necessary files like TBB.DLL and add the Helium Schema

How to Install the Linux Operating System

Download Wubi (from the link below) to your desktop and run the executable program.

Choose the drive where you want your installation to go. Unlike other installation methods, Wubi will not repartition your drive. Instead, it will place a file on your local drive which it will use as a virtual hard drive. In most Windows installations, C: is the local hard drive, so choose it from the dropdown menu as your installation drive. Again, do not worry -- this will not overwrite your data!

Choose an installation size. The base installation requires about four gigabytes. Since you'll want some room to install programs and store your data, choose a size larger than that.

Select one of the four desktop environments for your installation. Wubi can install Ubuntu, Kubuntu, Xubuntu, and Edubuntu. These are all variations of Ubuntu cut from the same cloth, but all "feel" different. The default Ubuntu installation uses the Gnome desktop, which is relatively lightweight -- some say it's akin to OS X. Kubuntu uses KDE for its desktop and feels more like Windows. Xubuntu's desktop is Xfce, which is much like a lightweight version of Gnome. It's best for older hardware. Edubuntu also uses the Gnome desktop, but also installs dozens of educational programs especially useful for K-12 students. Here, we're going with the default Ubuntu (Gnome) installation.

Select your language.

Input a username and password for your installation. Don't forget these -- unlike Windows, Linux uses your username and password extensively: you'll need them to log on to your computer, install programs, and make changes to the system. This is done for security reasons.

Click "Install" and Wubi will begin downloading the installation files. The download is about 600 megabytes, so get some coffee or let it run overnight.

Once the installation files are downloaded, you'll be asked to reboot your system. When you do, your computer will restart, but instead of booting directly into an operating system, you'll see a screen that asks you to select whether you'd like to boot Windows or Ubuntu. Choose Ubuntu to complete the installation.

Once the installation has finished, you'll have a completely functional Ubuntu Linux install. Ubuntu does a great job of detecting and installing hardware, but if you find that something doesn't work right, visit the Ubuntu forums and see if it's a known issue. Introduction

Downloading/Installation

You will get another window with the ReadMe File, just click Next, again.

I would recomend using the "Typical" installation. Make sure Typical is selected then click Next.

Now if you selected "Minimal" you won't see "skins" here. After reviewing this for a second and confirming that what you have on your screen is similar to mine, click the Next button. (Note: the "Free Space" will vary from computer to computer. Since I have about 170 Gigabytes free that is why my Free Space is so large.)

After pressing Next, you will get the above message. Basically if you select Yes it will do a quick scan of your hard drive upon boot-up. This scan will start before you log-in into Windows. I recomend you select No, because even though this scan will only happen once, this scan can take quiet a while. It took almost an hour for my hard drive.

If you have Microsoft Anti-Spyware, or other similar program installed you may be prompted with a similar message. Click the Allow button to allow this change to take affect.

Now you have to restart your machine. I highly advise you to select Restart and then click Finish.

After you restart you will get a message about Avast! it will give you the general "Hello and Thank you for choicing our Product." Also after you restart you will notice 2 new icons in the bottom right corner of the screen.

The icon with the I is for the "Virus Recovery Database" (VRDB). What this does is virutally makes copies of the program you have installed and if one of them gets infected with a virus this will replace the files infected so the program function like before. The A is the On-Access Protection.

Very Important - after restarting, right click on the A in the taskbar and select Updating, the highlight Program.

You will get this popup after its done updating. If Avast! had to download anything for your computer you may get a message asking you to restart.

Configuring

Now right click on the A in taskbar and click Start Avast! AntiVirus.

Click Program Registration and you will be taken to their website. Fill out the form and then check you e-mail. Once you get an e-mail from them (usualy about 1 minute after submitting the form) copy and paste the serial they provided into the highlighted box. Then click ok.

Now you will see this screen. Click the little hard drive like icon in the top right corner, below the X.

Click each icon on the right once until the options in the center read:

Scan local drives: ON
Scan removeable media: ON
Scan selected folders: ON
C:\

Also adjust the slider at the top from Standard Scan to Thorough Scan, and make sure to check "Scan Archive Files."

Now click on the A on the middle left side and adjust the Resident Protection from Standard to High.

Ok now to set-up and configure the On-Access Protection.

Right click on the A on the taskbar
Click On-Access Protection Control

I recomend changing the default slide from Normal to High, depending on how fast your system is.

Scheduling a Scan

Click (or double-click) on Add Scheduled Task
In the wizard that appears click Next - a list of programs will appear

In the Scheduled Tasks window, from the menu, click on Advanced and choose "Start Using Task Scheduler"
To test your newly created task, from the Scheduled Tasks window, right-click on the task's icon and choose "Run" from the popup menu. If the scan doesn't begin correctly you'll get an error message. The problem is most likely in the scan path (missing quotes or something like that.)

Preface:

As a security feature of Windows NT based operating systems (NT 4, Windows 2000, Windows XP as a domain member or under certain settings and Windows Server 2003) you are required to press Ctrl-ALT-DEL before being prompted for a user name and password at log-in. Preface:

Enabling themes is an unsupported and not recommended thing to do in Windows Server 2003 and CAN CAUSE INSTABILITY!!

The method:

First, click Start, highlight Administrative Tools, then click Services. (Also, remember how this Start Menu looks because it will be the last time you see it like this unless you go back to the Windows Standard theme :-)

Scroll down to "Themes" and double-click it, set the start-up type to Automatic, Apply, and then Click "Start" (Start will only become enabled after you set the Start-up to Automatic and !click Apply! [or manual, but you don't want that]) And press OK to leave the window

Now right-click your desktop, and click Properties

Under theme click Windows XP, then click Apply, and congratulations, you've enabled Luna

Preface:

This is basically the same procedure as the Windows 2000 tutorial. Some things to note about adding a Windows XP computer to a domain are the following:

You need Windows XP Professional to join a XP computer to a domain. Home can't be used fully for this
You will loose the "fancy" log on screen and you will receive the "classic" log on screen instead. This is for security and cannot be changed, unless you revert to workgroup mode
You will loose the "Fast User Switching". This cannot be restored, except by reverting back to workgroup mode.

Method:

Click Start, right click "My Computer" and click "Properties"

Go to the "Computer Name" tab and click "Change..."

Select the "Domain" radio button then put in your domain name, not including the . extension (in my example I used the domain "hello.test" but when joining the computer to a domain, I will only type "hello")

Press "OK". Then you will be presented with a user name and password prompt. Enter the user name and password of a Domain Administrator

Press "OK" and after a minute or two you will receive a message welcoming you to the domain. Then you will receive a message telling you that a reboot is required, click "OK" to that, and the properties window. Then click "Yes" when you are prompted to reboot.

And we're finished. You have just learnt how to add a Windows XP computer to a Windows Server 2003 domain

Additive:

After the XP computer boots to Control-Alt-Delete you may need to change it from logging onto itself (which will use the local info) to logging onto the domain. To do this, press Ctrl-Alt-Del, then the "Options >>>" button on the log on screen. Then select the domain from the drop-down box

Preface:

One of the greatest features of Windows Server 2003 is its ability to be a Domain Controller (DC). The features of a domain extend further than this tutorial ever could, but some of its most well known features are its ability to store user names and passwords on a central computer (the Domain Controller) or computers (several Domain Controllers). Method:

Click Start -> Run...

You will see the first window of the wizard. As it suggests, I suggest reading the help associated with Active Directory. After this, click "Next"

As I mentioned earlier, we will install the DNS server on this machine as well, but it can be installed elsewhere. So keep the default selection of "Install and configure", and click "Next"

Because, after all, this is a Windows Server 2003 tutorial website, we'll assume there are no pre-Windows 2000 servers that will be accessing this domain, so keep the default of "Permissions compatible only with Windows 2000 or Windows Server 2003 operating systems" and click "Next"

Now we will see a summary of what will happen. Make sure it's all correct because changing it afterwards can prove to be difficult

After the previous next was clicked, the actual process occurs. This can take several minutes. It's likely that you will be prompted for your Windows Server 2003 CD (for DNS) so have it handy

If your computer has a dynamically assigned address (from DHCP) you will be prompted to give it a static IP address. Click ok, and then in the Local Area Connection properties, click "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)" and then "Properties"

In the next window select "Use the following IP address" and select the information that you will use for your domain (and 127.0.0.1 for the primary DNS, because your computer will host DNS. I still suggest setting up an alternate as well.) Click "OK" and then "Close" on the next window

How to uninstall Oracle database software :

Uninstall all Oracle components using the Oracle Universal Installer (OUI).
Run regedit.exe and delete the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/ SOFTWARE/ORACLE key. This contains registry entire for all Oracle products.
Delete any references to Oracle services left behind in the following part of the registry: HKEY LOCAL MACHINE/ SYSTEM/ CurrentControlsSet/ Services/Ora*. It should be pretty obvious which ones relate to Oracle
Reboot your machine.
Delete the C: \Oracle directory, or whatever directory is your Oracle_Base.
Delete the C:\Program Files \Oracle directory.
Empty the contents of your c:\temp directory.
Empty your recycle bin.

Installing Oracle 10g database software :

Insert Oracle CD , the autorun window opens automatically. If you are installing from network or hard disk, click setup.exe in the installation folder.

The Oracle Universal Installer (OUI) will run and display the Select Installation MethodWindow.

Choose Basic Installation:
Select this option to quickly install Oracle Database 10g. This method requires minimal user input. It installs the software and optionally creates a general-purpose database based on the information you provide.
For basic installation, you specify the following:
Oracle Home Location — Enter the directory in which to install the Oracle Database 10g software. You must specify a new Oracle home directory for each new installation of Oracle Database 10g. Use the default value, which is :

c:\oracle\product\10.2.0\db_1

Installation Type — Select Enterprise Edition :
If you have limited space, select standard edition. Personal edition installs the same software as the Enterprise Edition, but supports only a single-user development and deployment environment.
Create Starter Database — Check this box to create a database during installation. Oracle recommends that you create a starter database for first Create Starter Database — time installations. Choose a Global Database Name, like cs157b, or just use the default value.
Type a password. Don’t lose this password, since you will need it to connect to the database server.
Click next

The Product-Specific Prerequisite Checks window appears: Click next

A summary screen appears showing information such as your global settings, space requirements and the new products to be installed. Click Install to start the installation..

At the end of the installation phase, the Configuration Assistants window appears. This window lists the configuration assistants that are started automatically.
If you are creating a database, then the Database Configuration Assistant starts automatically in a separate window.

At the end of database creation, you are prompted to unlock user accounts to make the accounts accessible. The SYS and SYSTEM accounts are already unlocked. Click OK to bypass password management.

Note: Oracle 10g still keeps scott / tiger username and password (UID=scott, PWD=tiger) from the old version of oracle. In the old version of oracle, scott/tiger user ID is available by default, but not in oracle 10g. If you want to use scott /tiger account, you must unlock it by clicking “Password Management” at the last window.
Password Management window will appear like the one shown below. Find the user name “Scott” and uncheck the “Lock Account?” column for the user name.

Your installation and database creation is now complete. The End of Installation window displays several important URLs, one of which is for Enterprise Manager.

You can navigate to this URL in your browser and log in as the SYS user with the associated password, and connect as SYSDBA. You use Enterprise Manager to perform common database administration tasks
Note : you can access Oracle Enterprise Manager using browser by typing the URL shown above in your browser. Instead of typing the IP address, you can also access the Enterprise Manager by typing http://localhost:1158/em or “http://[yourComputerName]:1158/em” or by clicking “Start >> All Programs >> Oracle – [YourOracleHome_home1] >> Database Control – [yourOracleID]” in Windows menu.

How to Install Windows Server 2008 Step by Step

Note: Windows Server 2008 can also be installed as a Server Core installation, which is a cut-down version of Windows without the Windows Explorer GUI. Because you don’t have the Windows Explorer to provide the GUI interface that you are used to, you configure everything through the command line interface or remotely using a Microsoft Management Console (MMC). The Server Core can be used for dedicated machines with basic roles such as Domain controller/Active Directory Domain Services, DNS Server, DHCP Server, file server, print server, Windows Media Server, IIS 7 web server and Windows Server Virtualization virtual server. For Server Core installations please see my "Installing Windows Server 2008 Core" article.

To use Windows Server 2008 you need to meet the following hardware requirements:

Follow this procedure to install Windows Server 2008:

1. Insert the appropriate Windows Server 2008 installation media into your DVD drive. If you don't have an installation DVD for Windows Server 2008, you can download one for free from Microsoft's Windows 2008 Server Trial website.

2. Reboot the computer.

3. When prompted for an installation language and other regional options, make your selection and press Next.

4. Next, press Install Now to begin the installation process.

5. Product activation is now also identical with that found in Windows Vista. Enter your Product ID in the next window, and if you want to automatically activate Windows the moment the installation finishes, click Next.

If you do not have the Product ID available right now, you can leave the box empty, and click Next. You will need to provide the Product ID later, after the server installation is over. Press No.

6. Because you did not provide the correct ID, the installation process cannot determine what kind of Windows Server 2008 license you own, and therefore you will be prompted to select your correct version in the next screen, assuming you are telling the truth and will provide the correct ID to prove your selection later on.

7. If you did provide the right Product ID, select the Full version of the right Windows version you're prompted, and click Next.

8. Read and accept the license terms by clicking to select the checkbox and pressing Next.

9. In the "Which type of installation do you want?" window, click the only available option – Custom (Advanced).

10. In the "Where do you want to install Windows?", if you're installing the server on a regular IDE hard disk, click to select the first disk, usually Disk 0, and click Next.

If you're installing on a hard disk that's connected to a SCSI controller, click Load Driver and insert the media provided by the controller's manufacturer.

If you're installing in a Virtual Machine environment, make sure you read the "Installing the Virtual SCSI Controller Driver for Virtual Server 2005 on Windows Server 2008"

If you must, you can also click Drive Options and manually create a partition on the destination hard disk.

11. The installation now begins, and you can go and have lunch. Copying the setup files from the DVD to the hard drive only takes about one minute. However, extracting and uncompressing the files takes a good deal longer. After 20 minutes, the operating system is installed. The exact time it takes to install server core depends upon your hardware specifications. Faster disks will perform much faster installs… Windows Server 2008 takes up approximately 10 GB of hard drive space.

The installation process will reboot your computer, so, if in step #10 you inserted a floppy disk (either real or virtual), make sure you remove it before going to lunch, as you'll find the server hanged without the ability to boot (you can bypass this by configuring the server to boot from a CD/DVD and then from the hard disk in the booting order on the server's BIOS)

12. Then the server reboots you'll be prompted with the new Windows Server 2008 type of login screen. Press CTRL+ALT+DEL to log in.

13. Click on Other User.

14. The default Administrator is blank, so just type Administrator and press Enter.

15. You will be prompted to change the user's password. You have no choice but to press Ok.

16. In the password changing dialog box, leave the default password blank (duh, read step #15…), and enter a new, complex, at-least-7-characters-long new password twice. A password like "topsecret" is not valid (it's not complex), but one like "T0pSecreT!" sure is. Make sure you remember it.

17. Someone thought it would be cool to nag you once more, so now you'll be prompted to accept the fact that the password had been changed. Press Ok.

18. Finally, the desktop appears and that's it, you're logged on and can begin working. You will be greeted by an assistant for the initial server configuration, and after performing some initial configuration tasks, you will be able to start working.

Purpose: To describe how to perform a basic installation of SQL Server 2005. Version Information: Although this document addresses SQL Server 2005 Developer Edition, the instructions are very similar or the same for other editions of SQL Server 2005.
Important Notes: Before installing SQL Server 2005, SQL Server 2000 databases should be backed up (if they are required), and the SQL Server 2000 software should be completely un-installed through the Control Panel, UNLESS there is a technical requirement for it to exist on the same machine.

Although SQL Server 2000 and 2005 can exist side by side on the same machine, they have to be installed as separate named instances. This document does not attempt to address the details of SQL Server named instances – if in doubt, consult the DBA for the project for which the installation is being performed. Should a user require SQL Server 2000 AFTER SQL Server 2005 has been installed, it can be installed as a separate named instance, however a check should be made to ensure that any critical applications that require SQL Server 2000 are capable of supporting named instances – not all are.

1. Insert the DVD into the DVD drive and double-click on the icon:

For most installations, if installing on standard 32 bit Windows XP Professional, click on the x86-based operating systems option.

5. The Installing Prerequisites screen appears:

Click on the Install button and wait whilst the system components are configured. This may take 10-20 seconds.

If the configuration check completes successfully (Success appears in the top panel, all ticks in the Details panel), click on Next.

Note that the components selected in the screen shot above are the most common components that will be needed for most developers and development DBAs. However, if another component such as Analysis Services is needed, it can be added easily afterwards by re-inserting the installation DVD and re-running the setup program. Click on the Advanced button to open up further options.

11. The advanced Features Selection screen opens:

IMPORTANT NOTE
As a general rule it is not necessary to change the default installation path or the Developer Edition installation, unless your organization has a standard which is different. If in doubt, check an existing PC or server at your site. Click on Next.

12. Select the Default instance:

IMPORTANT NOTE
If the Default instance radio button is disabled, this probably means that there is another, default instance of SQL Server 2000 or SQL Server 2005 already installed on this machine. In this case, consult the DBA for the project as it may not be necessary or desirable to re-install the database components. Click on Next.

13. Select the radio button Use the built-in System account:

The first step will change the Windows account under which the SQL Server service executes to the Local System account. In a production environment or certain development environments, it may be desirable to change this to a domain user account, but this is not usually necessary for local developer installations. Note that the service account settings can be changed through the Services applet in the Control Panel at any point after installation, however SQL Server will require re-starting in order for these changes to take effect. Click on Next.

14. Change Authentication Mode to Mixed Mode and set a password for the sa logon. The user’s NT logon name could be used as an initial password, but note that whatever is used, it should NOT be the same for each machine as the sa account gives sysadmin privileges to any user who uses it:

Click on Next.

15. Keep the default collation settings, UNLESS the DBA for the project specifies that they should be changed. Be aware that certain applications require non-default settings:

Click on Next.

16. Select Error Reporting and Usage options – it does not matter what these are set to, as they are completely at your discretion:

Click on Next.

17. The pre-installation screen will now appear:

Click on Install.

18. The Setup Progress screen will appear, informing you of installation progress:

This step usually takes 10-30 minutes, but requires no user intervention - so now's a good time to take a break and make some coffee.

19. The Setup steps have completed:

20. The Completing Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Setup screen will now appear:

If you only want the database server to be accessible from the machine on which it is installed, click on Finish. SQL Server 2005 installation is now complete. However, if you wish the database server to be accessible from other machines, click on the Surface Area Configuration tool link.

21. The Help Protect Your SQL Server screen will appear:

Click on the Surface Area Configuration for Services and Connections link.

22. The SQL Server 2005 Surface Area Configuration screen will appear:

Click on the Remote Connections node in the left hand tree pane, then click on ocal and remote connections. By default, TCP/IP only is selected and is usually sufficient in most development environments, but if you suspect that you may need SQL Server 2005 to host legacy applications which require support for the named pipes SQL Server communication protocol, click on Using TCP/IP and Named Pipes. If in doubt, consult the DBA for the project. In addition, if you wish this installation of SQL Server to automatically announce itself on the network to automatic database server directory queries, click on the SQL Server Browser Service, set the Startup type to Automatic, click on Apply, then click on the Start button.
Click on OK, and then close the Help Protect Your SQL Server screen.
Finally, click on the Finish button on the Completing Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Setup screen.

Assemble the PC

If you have purchased all the necessary hardware your are ready assemble your PC. Before unpacking your components from its original anti-static bags you must put on your anti-static wrist strap, which will discharge your self. It is important that you discharge yourself or there is a danger that you can damage your components by anti-static shock by touching the components. If you don't have an anti-static wrist strap you can discharge your self by touching the metal edges of your ATX case, although this is not recommended. Be careful not to cut yourself as some ATX cases have sharp edges. Have all the mounting screws that come with the motherboard and a philips screw driver handy as you would need them during the later stages.

Now you can proceed to the first step:

Install Motherboard

The first thing you should do is unpack your ATX case. Take off the cover of your case so that you can access the inside. Place the case on a desk so that you are looking down towards the open case. Your case should come with motherboard mounting screws. If your ATX back plate it not already fitted you can fit it by placing your plate near the ATX back plate cut out and pushing the plate outwards, it should clip on.

Now place your motherboard on top of the mounting screw holes. Make sure your ATX devices on the motherboard such as PS/2 and parallel port are facing towards ATX back plate cut out. Gently push your motherboard towards the cut out, every devices should fit easily into its corresponding cut out, as shown below.

The screw holes on your motherboard should align with the screw holes on your case. Place your screws that came with the case into the appropriate holes and gently screw it on using a screw driver.

The motherboard is now securely mounted to the case. You can now place the ATX power connector to the motherboard. Your ATX case should come with a power supply unit (PSU) and should already be mounted to the case. The ATX power connector is shown on image below.

Place the ATX power connector on top of the power socket on the motherboard. Push down the power connector and it should clip onto the socket. If you try to fit the power connector the wrong way round, it won't fit, it will only fit one way. So, if the power connector does not go in, it should go in the other way round.

Next - Processor (CPU) Installation

Locate the processor socket on your motherboard. I am installing an Intel PIII 866 processor on a socket 370 as shown on the following image. The installation would be slightly different if you have a different processor i.e. Slot1 PIII CPU, P4 Socket 478, Core 2 Duo Socket 775, AMD Slot A / Socket A, Socket AM2 CPU etc.

Raise the brown lever on the socket and slowly put the processor in place. You have to make sure the pin 1 of your CPU goes into the pin 1 of your CPU socket otherwise the CPU would not get into the socket, so don't try to force it in. It will go in gently if you fit it correctly. Now close the brown lever which will securely hold the CPU in place.

If you bought a retail boxed CPU it would include a heatsink + fan. If you bought an OEM CPU make sure you got a fan that is correct for the speed of your CPU, otherwise your CPU will overheat and behave abnormally or could be damaged. Take off the plastic cover from the bottom of the CPU fan that covers the heat transfer pad. Now place the CPU fan on top the CPU and push down the metal clips on the fan so that it clips onto the CPU socket.

CPU fan has a power connector which needs to be connected to CPU fan power socket on your motherboard as shown on the image above.

Finally, you have to specify what frequency (speed) your CPU is running at. This can be done using jumper settings, or on some modern motherboard it can be done in the BIOS, or your motherboard may have automatic detection for your CPU frequency. Please refer to your motherboard manual for more details. The motherboard I am using (Abit BX133) has a dip-stick jumper setting and it can be setup in the BIOS. I have left the jumper setting to default as I will use the BIOS to specify the CPU frequency. The CPU runs at the bus speed of 133Mhz therefore I will use the settings 133 * 6.5(multiplier) under the BIOS, which will the run the CPU at 866Mhz.

Next - Memory Installation (SDRAM)

Installing memory is quite simple. Find the SDRAM banks on your motherboard, they should look similar to the banks below. Notice the memory banks has a white clip on each side. Make sure you release the clips so it bends to each side.

Hold each corner of the SDRAM placing it on top of the bank 1. You will notice that the SDRAM has a cut at the bottom side, it is there to prevent the memoy going in the wrong way round. If you are holding the SDRAM the incorrect way you will not be able insert it. Gently push down the SDRAM and it should clip on to the memory bank. The two white clips will now become straight holding each corner of the memory. If you have more that one SDRAM perform same steps as above but placing the SDRAM in memory bank 2 and so on.

Next - Hard Disk Drive Installation

Please choose the type of hard drive you will be using to build the system. If you have an IDE hard drive (also known as ATA or PATA) then choose IDE. If you have SATA ( Serial ATA) hard drive then choose SATA. If you don't know what type hard drive you have, then look at the image below and choose the one that matches your hard drive.

Modem

Modem stands for Modulator Demodulator. It converts digital signals to analogue so that it can travel via your telephone line, and vice-versa. A modem is an essential item if you are intending to connect your PC to the internet.

There are many kinds modems out there based on the Rockwell/Connexant v.90/v.92 chipset. There are two kinds of modem, software and hardware. Software modems uses your CPU resources to perform its tasks and is run on a virtual COM port. Hardware modem performs its tasks using the onboard chipset and therefore does not take up the CPU resources. It also runs on a physical COM i.e. communication port 3. Software modems, which are also known as winmodem can only run on a windows operating system, while the hardware based modem can run on other operating systems like linux. External modems are mostly hardware based and connect to the serial port. You can also get external modems that connect to the USB port, however most of these are software based.

Analogue modems are currently on the decline as they are being replaced by Digital modems which are used for high speed broadband internet. Also known as ADSL modem or ADSL routers. ADSL modems are mostly external although you can get Internal ADSL modem's. Many people are also using Wireless ADSL routers as it offers an excellent way to share internet connections with multiple PCs. Some common ADSL Router suppliers are Netgear, Belkin and D-Link.

I have decided to use a Connexant 56K v.90 software modem for our demonstration PC as it performs quite well in terms of download.

Floppy Disk Drive

You need a FDD to access floppy disks. Although floppy disks are limited in capacity, only 1.44 mb, every old PC is almost guaranteed to have a FDD. Floppy disk drives and now coming the end of their life span as some current PCs are built without a floppy drive. This is due to the popularity of USB Flash drives. Floppy disk is ideal for storing small files and documents, creating boot disks, and transferring small files. It really does not matter which make of FDD you purchase as they are cheap and performs the same task.

Hard Disk Drive

Hard disk drive stores all your data including operating system, applications, user files and documents. It is a non-volatile storage, which means the contents of the HDD is not lost if the PC is switched off.

There are three different types of HDD, which are IDE/ATA, SCSI, SATA (Serial ATA). Majority of home PCs are equipped with IDE Hard drives. SCSI hard drives are mostly included in servers and powerful workstations as they offer better data transfer rate which results in better performance than the IDE drives. However modern SATA drives are not far behind SCSI drives in terms of performance with the introduction of the newer SATA 300 drives.

The price of IDE/SATA drives have fallen quite dramatically in the recent years. You can buy a very large drive for a competitive price. It is better to buy a drive which is quite large as it works out cheaper. A recommended entry level drive would be 80 GB to 120 GB. The major HDD manufacturers are IBM, Seagate, Maxtor, Samsung, Western Digital and Fujitsu. For our demonstration PC I have chosen a Maxtor ATA100 drive as shown below.

Nearly all operating systems and applications software comes on CD. It is therefore essential to have a CD-ROM drive for installing your applications. Certain programs requires the CD to be in the CD-ROM drive for that program to run. For example, various encyclopedia and games. CD-ROM can also be used for playing standard audio CD's on your PC.

If you are intending to watch DVD movies on your PC then you would require a DVD-ROM which can perform all the tasks of a CD-ROM as well as play DVD movies.

CD-ROM's come in various speeds, the faster drive, the faster it will install your applications. DVD drives specifies two types of speeds, one for the software installation and other for the DVD extraction. For example a DVD drive with 16x32x specification means that it is a 16 speed DVD and 32 speed CD. Some of the CD/DVD-ROM manufacturers include Toshiba, Poineer, Hitachi, LG and Samsung.

Speakers

A quality sound card would not be much of a benefit without a decent pair of PC speakers. Most PC speakers are magnetically shielded so that it does not interfere with your monitor, but there are some budget speakers out there that are not shielded, so check before you buy. If you are just going to use the speakers for basic sound and music and are not one of those people who play CDs on a PC then you can get away with a budget PC speaker. However, if you play games and CD's then you should consider a speaker system with a sub-woofer. These would produce high quality sound suitable for most tasks.

Monitor / LCD Display

It is important that you get a quality monitor that is comfortable to view. Monitors come is various sizes and refresh rate. 17" monitor are becoming entry standard monitor. 15" monitors are OK if you are running it at a low resolution and not using it for long hours. As monitor prices have dropped in the recent months it is recommended that you consider a 17" or 19" monitor. You can run these monitors at higher resolution and refresh rate, which means they are more comfortable to view and you can work with them for long hours. Monitors are measured diagonally. If a monitor is 17" it does not mean that it is the actual viewable area. Some 17" comes with a viewable area of 16" which is good where as others can be as low as 15.6". Monitors consist of thousands of pixels (the tiny dots you see on the screen). Smaller pixels produces high definition sharp display. Settle for something which is at least 0.25 mm dot pitch. If you purchase a 17" monitor make sure it can handle refresh rate of at least 85 Hz at 1024 * 768 resolution. A 19" monitor should handle at least 1280 * 1024 at 85 Hz.

Currently the most popular viewing device are TFT Flat panels. They are now more affordable than before. Most people prefer TFT Flat panels as they save lot of desk space. They are also more comfortable view

TV Card

A TV card gives you the option of watching TV on your monitor. TV cards are quite useful as it offers more than just watching TV. You can connect your VCR to the TV card so that you can watch video's too. One of the useful things about having a TV card is that you can use it for capturing Video. Using the necessary software you can capture video in various format such AVI or MPEG files. One of the popular TV card is Haupauge WinTV PCI as shown below.

Older TV cards were all analogue device. Now you can get Digital TV cards which allows you to view Digital terrestrial TV channels. You can even get Digital Satellite and Cable TV cards.

Satellite Card

Digital satellite cards (DVB-S) are designed to allow you to watch Satellite TV or get high speed broardband via Satellite. You can connect the card to a satellite dish using the standard F-socket just like a deicated satellite box. Once installed and the dish is alligned to your chosen satellite like Astra, Hotbird etc you can use a DVB software to watch your favaourate satellite channels on you PC.

This step-by-step guide demonstrates how to install Windows 7 Ultimate. The guide is similar for other versions of Windows 7 such as Home Premium.

The best way to install Windows 7 is to do a clean install. It is not difficult to perform a clean installation. Before you start the installation process I recommend that you check Windows 7 System Requirements list to ensure that your hardware is supported by Windows 7. If you don't have Windows 7 drivers for all your hardware, it is a good idea to download all the drivers from the hardware manufacturers website and save all the necessary drivers on a CD-R or a USB drive before you start the installation.

Windows 7 DVD is bootable. In order to boot from the DVD you need to set the boot sequence. Look for the boot sequence under your BIOS setup and make sure that the first boot device is set to CD-ROM/DVD-ROM.

Step 1 - Place Windows 7 DVD in your dvd-rom drive and start your PC. Windows 7 will start to boot up and you will get the following progress bar.

Step 2 - The next screen allows you to setup your language, time and currency format, keyboard or input method. Choose your required settings and click next to continue.

Step 3 - The next screen allows you to install or repair Windows 7. Since we are doing a clean install we will click on "install now".

Step 4 - Read the license terms and tick I accept license terms. Then click next to continue.

Step 5 - You will now be presented with two options. Upgrade or Custom (Advanced). Since we are doing a clean install we will select Custom (Advanced).

Step 6 - Choose where you would like to install Windows 7. If you have one hard drive you will get a similar option to the image below. You can click next to continue. If you have more that one drive or partition then you need to select the appropriate drive and click next. If you need to format or partition a drive then click Drive options (advance) before clicking next.

Step 7 - Windows 7 starts the installation process and starts copying all the necessary files to your hard drive as shown on the image below.

Step 8 - It will go through various stages of the setup and will reboot your system few times.

Step 9 - When your PC reboots it attempts to boot from DVD as its the first boot device. Do not press any key during the boot prompt so Windows 7 will continue with the installation by booting from the hard drive.

Step 10 - After the reboot your computer will be prepared for first use.

Step 11 - At this stage you need to choose a user name and computer name. Click next to continue. The user account you create here is the Administrator account which is the main account for your Windows 7 that has all the privileges.

Step 12 - Choose your password and password hint just incase you forget your password and need to jog your memory.

Step 13 - You can now type the product key that came with Windows 7 and click next. If you do not enter the product key you can still proceed to the next stage. However Windows 7 will run in trial mode for 30 days. You must therefore activate Windows within 30 days otherwise you can not access your computer after 30 days.

Step 14 - Help protect your computer and improve Windows automatically. Choose Use recommended settings.

Step 15 - Review your time and date settings. Select your time zone, correct the date and time and click next to continue.

Step 16 - Select your computer's current location. If you are a home user then choose Home network otherwise select the appropriate option.

Step 17 - Windows will now finalize the settings for your computer and restart.

Step 18 - After the final restart Windows 7 will start to boot up.

Step 19 - Finally you have the logon screen. Just type your password and press enter or click on the arrow to logon to Windows 7 for the first time.

Step 20 - After you have logged on to Windows 7 for the first time, you will see similar desktop to the image below. At this point you can start using your computer. However it may not be fully configured. You need to make sure that all the hardware is detected correctly and the necessary device drivers are installed. This can be done from the device manager.

Step 21 - To go to device manager click - Start Menu -> Control Panel -> System and Security -> System -> Device Manager. You will see all your hardware listed as shown on the image below. You need to check if you have any yellow exclamation marks next to the name of the devices, similar to "Multimedia Audio Controller" on the image below. This indicates that the driver has not been installed for this device.

At this stage you can install the driver for this device. To do so, Right Mouse click on Multimedia Audio Controller -> Update Driver Software...

Step 22 - You can choose to "Search automatically for updated driver software" or "Browse my computer for driver software". If you have the driver CD or if the driver is on a USB drive then choose "browse my computer for driver software". Window 7 will search and install the driver from the CD or you can locate the driver manually.

Once you have removed all the yellow exclamation marks from the device manager your Windows 7 configuration would be fully complete.

Step 23 - Finally check if you have successfully activated Windows 7. Click Start Menu -> Control Panel -> System and Security -> System. You will get a window similar to the image below. Towards the bottom you will see Windows is activated followed by your product ID. This shows that your copy of Windows 7 is fully activated.

This procedure demonstrates how to install Windows XP Professional. The procedure to install Windows XP home edition is very similar to the professional edition. Since Windows XP Pro is more advanced operating system, it will be used to demonstrate the installation procedure.

The best way install Windows XP is to do a clean install. It is not difficult to perform a clean installation. Before you perform the installation I recommend that you check Windows XP Compatibility List to ensure that your hardware is supported by XP. If your hardware is not on the compatibility list you can check your hardware manufactures website to download the drivers for Windows XP. Save all the necessary drivers onto floppy disks or CD before you start the installation.

All versions of Windows XP CD are bootable. In order to boot from CD/DVD-ROM you need to set the boot sequence. Look for the boot sequence under your BIOS setup and make sure that the first boot device is set to CD/DVD-ROM. You can then perform the following steps to install Windows XP:

Step 1 - Start your PC and place your Windows XP CD in your CD/DVD-ROM drive. Your PC should automatically detect the CD and you will get a message saying "Press any key to boot from CD". Soon as computer starts booting from the CD your will get the following screen:

Step 2 - At this stage it will ask you to press F6 if you want to install a third party Raid or SCSI driver. If you are using a an IDE Hard Drive then you do not need to press F6. If you are using a SCSI or SATA Hard drive then you must press F6 otherwise Windows will not detect your Hard Drive during the installation. Please make sure you have the Raid drivers on a floppy disk. Normally the drivers are supplied on a CD which you can copy to a floppy disk ready to be installed. If you are not sure how to do this then please read your motherboard manuals for more information.

Step 3 - Press S to Specify that you want to install additional device.

Step 4 - You will be asked to insert the floppy disk with the Raid or SCSI drivers. Press enter after you have inserted the disk.

Step 5 - You will see a list of Raid drivers for your HDD. Select the correct driver for your device and press enter.

Step 6 - You will then get a Windows XP Professional Setup screen. You have the option to do a new Windows install, Repair previous install or quit. Since we are doing a new install we just press Enter to continue.

Next - How to install Windows XP (Part 2)

tep 7 - You will be presented with the End User Licensing Agreement. Press F8 to accept and continue

Step 8 - This step is very important. Here we will create the partition where Windows will be installed. If you have a brand new unformatted drive you will get a screen similar to below. In our case the drive size is 8190MB. We can choose to install Windows in this drive without creating a partition, hence use the entire size of the drive. If you wish to do this you can just press enter and Windows will automatically partition and format the drive as one large drive.

However for this demonstration I will create two partition. The first partition will be 6000MB (C: drive) and second partition would be 2180MB (E: drive). By creating two partition we can have one which stores Windows and Applications and the other which stores our data. So in the future if anything goes wrong with our Windows install such as virus or spyware we can re-install Windows on C: drive and our data on E: drive will not be touched. Please note you can choose whatever size partition your like. For example if you have 500GB hard drive you can have two partition of 250GB each.

Press C to create a partition.

Step 8 - Windows will show the total size of the hard drive and ask you how much you want to allocate for the partition you are about to create. I will choose 6000MB. You will then get the screen below. Notice it shows C: Partition 1 followed by the size 6000 MB. This indicates the partition has been created. We still have an unpartitioned space of 2189MB. Next highlight the unpartitioned space by pressing down the arrow key. Then press C to create another partition. You will see the total space available for the new partition. Just choose all the space left over, in our case 2180MB.

Step 9 - Now you will see both partition listed. Partition 1 (C: Drive) 6000MB and Partition 2 (E: Drive) 2180MB. You will also have 8MB of unpartitioned space. Don't worry about that. Just leave it how its is. Windows normally has some unpartitioned space. You might wonder what happened to D: drive. Windows has automatically allocated D: drive to CD/DVD-ROM.

Select Partition 1 (C: Drive) and press Enter.

Step 10 - Choose format the partition using NTFS file system.This is the recommended file system. If the hard drive has been formatted before then you can choose quick NTFS format. We chose NTFS because it offers many security features, supports larger drive size, and bigger size files.

Windows will now start formatting drive C: and start copying setup files as shown on the two images below :

Next - How to install Windows XP (Part 3)

Step 11 - After the setup has completed copying the files the computer will restart. Leave the XP CD in the drive but this time DO NOT press any key when the message "Press any key to boot from CD" is displayed. In few seconds setup will continue. Windows XP Setup wizard will guide you through the setup process of gathering information about your computer.

Step 12 - Choose your region and language.

Step 13 - Type in your name and organization.

Step 14. Enter your product key.

Step 15 - Name the computer, and enter an Administrator password. Don't forget to write down your Administrator password.

Step 16 - Enter the correct date, time and choose your time zone.

Step 17 - For the network setting choose typical and press next.

Step 18 - Choose workgroup or domain name. If you are not a member of a domain then leave the default settings and press next. Windows will restart again and adjust the display.

Next - How to install Windows XP (Part 4)

Step 19 - Finally Windows will start and present you with a Welcome screen. Click next to continue.

Step 20 - Choose 'help protect my PC by turning on automatic updates now' and press next.

Step 21 - Will this computer connect to the internet directly, or through a network? If you are connected to a router or LAN then choose: 'Yes, this computer will connect through a local area network or home network'. If you have dial up modem choose: 'No, this computer will connect directly to the internet'. Then click Next.

Step 22 - Ready to activate Windows? Choose yes if you wish to active Windows over the internet now. Choose no if you want to activate Windows at a later stage.

Step 23 - Add users that will sign on to this computer and click next.

Step 24 - You will get a Thank you screen to confirm setup is complete. Click finish.

Step 25. Log in, to your PC for the first time.

Step 26 - You now need to check the device manager to confirm that all the drivers has been loaded or if there are any conflicts. From the start menu select Start -> Settings -> Control Panel. Click on the System icon and then from the System Properties window select the Hardware tab, then click on Device Manager.

If there are any yellow exclamation mark "!" next to any of the listed device, it means that no drivers or incorrect drivers has been loaded for that device. In our case we have a Video Controller (VGA card) which has no drivers installed.

Your hardware should come with manufacturer supplied drivers. You need to install these drivers using the automatic setup program provided by the manufacturer or you need to manually install these drivers. If you do not have the drivers, check the manufacturers website to download them.

To install a driver manually use the following procedure:

(a) From the device manager double click on the device containing the exclamation mark.

(b) This would open a device properties window.

(c) Click on the Driver tab.

(d) Click Update Driver button. The Wizard for updating device driver pops up as shown below:

You now get two options. The first option provides an automatic search for the required driver. The second option allows you to specify the location of the driver. If you don't know the location of the driver choose the automatic search which would find the required driver from the manufacturer supplied CD or Floppy disk. Windows would install the required driver and may ask you to restart the system for the changes to take affect. Use this procedure to install drivers for all the devices that contain an exclamation mark. Windows is completely setup when there are no more exclamation marks in the device manager.

This procedure demonstrates how to install Windows ME operating system. The procedure to install Windows 98 is very similar to ME. Since Windows ME is the latest Windows 9x family operating system, it will be used to demonstrate the installation procedure.

Boot your system with Windows 98 or ME boot disk. When the system starts you will be presented with a menu which gives you the option to boot with or without CD-ROM support. Select the option to boot with CD-ROM support. This would create a RAM drive and load a device driver to support your DVD/CD-ROM. The RAM drive is assigned to D: (D drive) and your CD-ROM should be assigned to E: (E drive).

Place the Windows ME CD into the drive. At A: command prompt type E: and press enter. Then type setup. At his stage Windows runs DOS based scandisk to verify if your hard disk has any problems. If there are no problems Windows proceeds with the setup and launches the Windows ME setup wizard as shown in figure 1.

After agreeing to the license agreement Windows will ask you to type in your product key. The default directory to install windows is c:\windows, I recommend that you leave it as default. Next you would be given four types of installation options which are Typical, Portable, Compact, and Custom. Choosing typical would install the most common components and is suitable for most people. If you want to specify which components to install then choose custom. You would be presented with few other dialog boxes such entering your name and company name, option to create a Windows ME boot disk before file copy process begins. After completing the copying process Windows restarts and boots from the hard disk, make sure you remove your floppy disk from the drive. It will detect your plug and play devices and would present a few more dialog boxes. Just read the instructions on dialog boxes and proceed as required. Windows would restarts again after completing final setup stage. This does not mean everything is completely setup. Some of your hardware device may have conflicts or may not have drivers loaded as Windows does not contain those drivers.

From device manager you can check if all the drivers has been loaded or if there are any conflicts. From the start menu select Start -> Settings -> Control Panel. Click on theSystem icon and then from the System Properties window select the Device Managertab. This lists all the devices as shown in figure 2.

This procedure explains how to setup a new hard disk. Warning - if you are setting up a hard disk which contains data, the following procedure would completely erase your hard disk and the data would be unrecoverable.

Before a new hard disk can be used it needs to be setup. This involves partitioning and formatting the hard disk. Windows 98 or ME boot disk contains the required software to perform this procedure. FDISK.EXE and FORMAT.COM are the files required in your bootable floppy disk. Start the partition and format procedure by booting your PC using a Windows boot disk. Make sure you set the BIOS so that the boot sequence is set to detect the floppy disk first. If your system has no problems booting you will be presented with a Windows boot disk menu. This gives you the option to start the system with or without CD-ROM support. At this stage you do not need the CD-ROM support, so choose the option to boot without CD-ROM support. You should end up in the MS DOS prompt A: (A drive). From A: command prompt type fdisk. You will be presented with following message:

Choose "Y" to enable large disk support.You will now be presented with the FDISK main menu as shown below.

From the menu, choose option 1 - Create DOS partition or Logical DOS drive. Another menu will present the following options.

Choose option 1 - Create primary DOS Partition. FDISK verifies the integrity of your drive and will ask you if want to use the maximum available size of your hard disk to create the primary partition and set it active. To keep things simple we will create one large partition. Choose "Y" to use maximum available space. When the partition has been created successfully you will be notified by the system. Your drive is now known as C: (C drive). Press "Esc" to return to the menu. Press "Esc" again to exit FDISK. You need to restart your system for the changes to take affect. Leave boot disk in the drive.When the system reboots, choose start without CD-ROM from the boot disk menu. While booting from floppy disk you might get error message like "Invalid media type reading drive C" this is OK for this stage as the hard disk is not formatted.

From A: command prompt type format c:You will get a message saying "WARNING, ALL DATA ON NON-REMOVABLE DISK DRIVE C: WILL BE LOST. Proceed with Format (Y/N)?".

Don't worry about the message as you do not have any data in the new hard disk. Choose "Y". The format will proceed and would show you a progress indicator. The time it takes to format a hard disk depends on the size and speed of the drive. This could be around 5-30 minutes. Once the format is complete you need to reset your system. You are now ready to install an operating system.
