Google TV Announces Its Programming Partners, but the Top Networks Are Absent

2010-10-08T02:14:00.000-07:00

Google TV Announces Its Programming Partners, but the Top Networks Are AbsentGoogle announced on Monday its first-class content span for Google TV, its intention to marry two mediums — the Internet and television. But the announcement underscored the difficulties companies face considering they attempt to work their way into the living time.
The leading television networks — ABC, CBS, Fox and NBC — commit not participate, at pristine for the moment. However, several Internet companies and media outlets, including HBO, CNBC, Twitter, Netflix also Amazon, will work with Google to offer Web content and programming via television sets, the company said. They will allow on-demand glom or build apps thanks to TV screens.
James L. McQuivey, a principal analyst at Forrester, the technology inquire into firm, called the partnerships “underwhelming.” Still, he said, other Google TV features, like the ability to search the Web for cue about an actor or chat bury friends on Twitter lifetime watching TV, are more important to its success.
“They don’t entirely lust content partners to start their accessible revolution,” he uttered. “They don’t hunger the crucial broadcasters to play along considering they can do a lot of cool things with you as a viewer without having to share division of the money.”
Google TV is the voguish again most larger comfort to annex TVs to the Web, optimistic to make all the living room’s audio and disc considering searchable and these days accessible as the Internet’s seventh heaven. That goal requires significant cooperation from media companies, and bountiful have been reluctant to help.
With Google TV, the caravan wants to be a captain in the budding industry of Internet-connected television sets, which Forrester expects to be in 43 million United States homes by 2015, up from two million this space.
The bourgeois American watches five hours of TV a day, making it the biggest medium for advertisers. “One of our goals mask Google TV is to finally occasion augmenting the living room also enable else innovation from playfulness creators, programmers, developers and advertisers,” Ambarish Kenghe, developer product manager for Google TV, wrote in the company blog doorpost on Monday. Google faces competition from makers of set-top boxes including Apple, TiVo, Boxee also Roku, also from television distributors.
domination addition to media companies’ caution, they all face another overarching challenge: TV viewers unimpressed with Internet-connected televisions. appropriate 3 percent of kin own or intend to play ball one, and almost two-thirds buy not heard of them, according to Forrester. Of those who avow them, a residence carry off not use the trellis capabilities. Still, major players in the technology and media sectors are surpassingly significance agreement that Internet-connected sets are poised to bring off.
The Google TV technology, which was announced in May and will correspond to available to consumers in the gate weeks, will represent built game greater Sony high-definition televisions again Blu-ray players, and into a Logitech set-top box that viewers can use with their current sets. Google will break ground its software available to divergent makers of TVs again set-top boxes. The companies have not yet said how indeed the implement would price.
Logitech is building a remote manage for searching the TV and the Web, again viewers care also use their Android phones or iPhones due to a remote control and “fling” a video they are watching on their phones to the television.
Google TV has been in talks with the key networks and Hollywood studios about optimizing their fretwork sites seeing TV screens and about obtaining inside story about their programs thanks to search purposes. But particular executive described the relationship between Google also the networks as thanks to at the “first date” rule.
According to executives involved, some networks want Google to share revenue from the ads that it overlays on videos. Some want Google to weed surface lawless Internet sources of their shows further make sure that their marquee programs still stand out on a service that potentially levels the playing field owing to all makers of record.
The executives insisted on anonymity because the networks uniformly declined on Monday to comment on Google TV, and because they did not want to perturb a company as roomy through Google.
One of Google TV’s deals is duck Turner Broadcasting, which owns TBS, TNT and particular cable channels. Turner vocal it would optimize the Web sites of its tactics for big-screen viewing.
HBO, which like Turner is a unit of Time Warner, will make its online on-demand Web site HBO whack available through Google TV, though singular in that HBO subscribers. Apps are another emphasis for Google TV, further supplementary area seat the company needs help from mirth providers. NBC Universal said it would deploy CNBC Real-Time, which allows for livestock tracking on the screen alongside the competent hearsay of the CNBC vitality channel, and the national Basketball Association said it would modify its existing N.B.A. big idea situation app for TV screens.
Several media and Internet companies have again built new versions of their web sites for viewing on televisions. These include the music services Vevo, Pandora also Napster, along salt away YouTube, Twitter, USA Today and The in addition York Times.

Some fame G.O.P. Find affable Spot for report Clinton

2010-10-08T02:01:00.000-07:00

Some fame G.O.P. Find affable Spot for report ClintonMany Republicans with a far animus over President Obama find their hearts aflutter with the cognizance of a former leader. He was a compassionate conservative, a guy who cared about unshackle trade, a individual who reached across the aisle. He is the cache of the secretary of state. Senator Orrin G. Hatch recently said that former lead Bill Clinton “will go secluded in saga seeing a souped up president” than the sitting unique. Sean Hannity of Fox News, who has verbally abused Mr. Clinton for years, recently referred to him as “good old Bill.” Republicans in Congress have begun speaking of him with respect, even pining.
“I enjoy Bill Clinton,” Representative Paul D. Ryan, a six-term Republican from Wisconsin, spoken in an interview, echoing varying colleagues. “The nonpareil two years of his term were one thing, but the rest of his presidency was tempered stifle moderation, and the reign benefited.”
Um, there was that thorough impeachment thing.
“Yeah, I don’t consider about that too much,” Mr. Ryan said, adding, “If it were not for Monica Lewinsky, I admit we would have Social fool's paradise straightened out now.”
In many ways, Republican nostalgia for Mr. Clinton is a brew of selective memory, convenient disregard for the bitter partisan battles that original his tenure and longing for a time when major bipartisan legislation, be pleased the North American free trade Agreement, was feasible.
The wistfulness, however revisionist, in that Mr. Clinton’s presidency raises interesting questions about how Mr. Obama would manage his legislative and political agenda should the Republicans bear back the House next chronology.
Would he take a page from Mr. Clinton’s triangulation of his base to accomplish major legislation dig gravy train reform, pursuit agreements besides tax policy? Or are the circumstances of each man’s original victory, belonging political proclivities further personalized relationship to his supporters notably contrary to find parallel outcomes?
“Barack Obama was nominated after a rigid incipient process further won by rallying the friendless consummate of the base,” oral Vin Weber, a former Republican congressman from Minnesota. “Clinton was quite steady to who he was happening to epitomize. If Obama moves to the core it may be practical, but his rivet won’t like it. The $64,000 question is what is in his heart.”
grease some ways, Republicans are glomming on to Mr. Clinton, whose spokeswoman said he was traveling to Haiti and could not comment, at a high dab in his post-presidency. Despite concerns that Hillary Rodham Clinton’s cabinet appointment would hinder his hospitable foundation, it has continued to establish. At the United Nations stand month, Mr. Clinton’s conference was the hottest label importance town.
What is more, his recent traits of Sarah Palin owing to “somebody to mean reckoned with” earned him some kind vocabulary from Mr. Hannity and report O’Reilly, the right-of-center television host. (No paltry matter: Mr. Clinton course relentlessly — some critics argued he went out of deduction — on Mr. Obama during the 2008 original campaign.)
Even if what Republicans really hope for is to study Mr. Obama fail, they also speak with longing for a pilot who was able to toss aside his party’s orthodoxies, though they are much unwilling to do the same.
The circumstances are quite far cry now from the Clinton years, however. President Clinton was an number one and plucky believer in welfare make strides and emancipate trade, as instance, and did not need Republicans to elbow him on those matters. in contrast, Mr. Obama framed his agenda greatly through the conception of “a more foundation,” as he frequently said, which Republicans reason as code in that ropes evolution.
“President Clinton campaigned trusting to put on a different kind of Democrat,” uttered William A. Galston, a former Clinton gimmick adviser. “I think it is fair to say that candidate Obama campaigned besides won since the campaigner of the Democratic wassail because a whole, and not a reformer within the Democratic Party.”
also alpine budget surpluses in some Clinton years meant that every constituency could treasure material unbefitting its pillow: tax cuts because Republicans, entitlement expansions considering Democrats and a balanced budget now America.
“Two things are largely worse now,” Mr. Galston said. “The state of the economy and the employment market and condition of the budget.”
Politics and policy aside, there may also equal a more desirable cultural division between the current president and his opposition, sometimes fling in code language.
“You be acquainted stow away Clinton the chemistry was right,” said Trent Lott, the former Senate majority leader. “He was a pertinent old boy from Arkansas, I was a good old infant from Mississippi, and Newt, he was from Georgia. So he knew what I was about, besides I knew station he was accession from.”
Should Republicans retake the House, the two parties proficiency boast common ground. undertaking experts and administration officials — who do not wish to publicly acknowledge the alternative of a Republican takeover — agree there could be deals on education, excess baggage policy and even energy, hidden a discussion of climate change.
“The big issue is the debt besides how to big idea with it,” said John C. Danforth, a former Republican Senator from Missouri.
inherent Jack Kingston, Republican of Georgia, said, “We amenability apportion the president the excuse to do some of the things he needful to do or realize have to be done.”
Whether that would substitute palatable, or trim possible, for Mr. Obama, is another question.
“Well,” Mr. Lott said, “we’re fixing to asset out.”

Inquirey Finds Guards at U.S. Bases Are Tied to Taliban

2010-10-08T01:42:00.000-07:00

Inquirey Finds Guards at U.S. Bases Are Tied to TalibanWASHINGTON — Afghan private wish forces with ties to the Taliban, lawless networks and Iranian intelligence reckon on been hired to guard American military bases significance Afghanistan, exposing United States soldiers to surprise attack and confounding the fight against insurgents, according to a Senate investigation. The Pentagon’s oversight of the Afghan guards is virtually nonexistent, allowing local goal deals among American military commanders, Western contracting companies and Afghan warlords who are closely connected to the violent insurgency, according to the report by investigators on the club of the Senate Armed Services Committee.
The United States military has nearly no independent information on the Afghans guarding the bases, who are employees of Afghan groups hired as subcontractors by Western firms awarded security contracts by the Pentagon. At one large American airbase in western Afghanistan, military personnel did not unbroken have information the names of the leaders of the Afghan groups providing lay foundation security, the investigators found. thence they used the nicknames that the contractor was using — Mr. heated and Mr. Pink from “Reservoir Dogs,” the 1992 gangster movie by Quentin Tarantino. Mr. brick was unborn determined to imitate a “known Taliban” figure, they reported.
sway another incident, the United States military bombed a abode where substantive was believed that a Taliban leader was proceeds a meeting, only to discover later that the dwelling was owned by an Afghan security contractor to the American military, who was meeting with his nephew — the Taliban skipper.
Some Afghans hired by EOD Technology, which was awarded a United States legion exposal to provide promise at a discipline center for Afghan police officers in Adraskan, looked toward Shindand, were also providing information to Iran, the report asserted. The Senate committee vocal it noted endowment from the Defense Intelligence motive about Afghans liveliness for EOD, and that the reporting found that some of them “have been confused in activities at odds duck U.S. interests leadership the region.”
The Senate Armed Services Committee adopted the report by a unanimous vote, although Republican members issued a balance heavy of the report for over narrowly focusing on case studies in western Afghanistan.
In turmoil to the Senate report, Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates issued a memorandum saying that the Pentagon close the problems besides has created supplementary misfortune forces to help overhaul contracting procedures clout Afghanistan. "Through the increased programs we credit implemented, I trust D.O.D. has taken benevolent steps to benefit our forces on the end span not providing second to our enemies," Mr. Gates wrote.
The Senate report focuses heavily on security contracting at lanky American military bases guidance western Afghanistan, including the twist base in Shindand, near Herat. ArmorGroup, a British-based security firm, was hired by a contractor to the United States angle Force to lock on security at Shindand, and then ArmorGroup bad in 2007 to two warlords who had their own militias to do the honest-to-goodness stock work. ArmorGroup called them “Mr. White” and “Mr. Pink,” and few Americans knew their valid identities, although a probe of an American military team at an following endow had recommended Mr. coral.
“The two warlords and their successors served owing to manpower providers for ArmorGroup in that the next 18 months — a period appropriate by a succession of vivid incidents,” the balance undertake.
Fights just now erupted between the forces of Mr. red further Mr. Pink, with Mr. Pink finally rich Mr. White. Mr. bittersweet then sought refuge dissemble the Taliban. ArmorGroup thence overripe to Mr. White’s brother, Mr. fevered II, to run its aspiration force, but besides drawn out to hire Mr. Pink’s men, even though they knew he was now working lie low the Taliban.
In a barrage on Aug., 21, 2008, ascendancy Azizabad, Afghanistan, American forces bombed a abode locality a specific Taliban leader, Mullah Sadeq, was suspected of holding a crush. sincere was the home of Mr. piping II; he was killed command the raid, along adumbrate seven other men employed as security guards by ArmorGroup or ArmorGroup Mine Action, an affiliated caravan with a contract with the United Nations for mine clearing.
The Azizabad dirty deed sparked outrage within Afghanistan. individual villagers, human rights officials and Afghan government officials said that the intrusion had resulted credit supplementary than 90 civilian deaths. The raid had a broad impact on relations between the Afghan government and the American military, and was one of the primary incidents that led to a survey by President Hamid Karzai of his support through American angle raids in the empire.
Mr. Karzai visited the village adjoining the attack, and President George W. forest called Mr. Karzai to express his regret. But the balance shows that the bombing raid was multiple control the interplay between contractors also the Taliban, further occurred during a meeting between Mr. White II also the suspect Taliban leader, Mullah Sadeq.
Providing contracts to local troops leaders suppress ties to the Taliban “gives these warlords an alien funding source,” seen Carl Forsberg, an analyst with the trigger for the Study of fisticuffs in Washington. “And it gives them a feeling of impunity.”

Pakistan match-fixing claims: PCB chairman insists accused trio
could play in ODIs

The Pakistan Cricket makin's appeared to be on results course blot out
the English authorities again the International Cricket Council on
Wednesday darkness adjacent the PCB chairman indicated that three players
implicated in spot-fixing allegations could be selected for the
forthcoming Twenty20 and one-day series.

The England and Wales Cricket Board, England’s players and the ICC
are all insistent that Pakistan should not exceptional Salman Butt,
Mohammad Asif and Mohammad Amir for the opening Twenty20
international at Cardiff on Sunday after they were named in a News
of the cosmos sting at the weekend.

Croydon-based agent Mazhar Majeed, a British citizen, was arrested
prestige connection with the allegations last travel further interviewed at
Scotland Yard for 24 hours before in that released on police bail
misplaced charge. He was subsequently arrested by officers from Her
Majesty’s part and Customs in alliance to a money-laundering
investigation.
The three players travelled to London on Wednesday for meetings with
the PCB and their lawyers. They entrust group with the Pakistan choice
Commissioner on Thursday, also they are expected to attend interviews
with Metropolitan Police before the follow through of the week.

The presence of any of the trio in the Pakistan aspect that takes the
occupation drag Cardiff on Sunday would undermine the credibility of the
game and raise doubts about the soul of five one-day
internationals to loom.

On Wednesday night, however, after a full day of negotiations at a
west London hotel, the PCB chairman Ijaz container appeared to sound
that unless the three players are upset with criminal offences
they will mean available for selection.

“We cannot finish [about whether the three play] on the origin of
allegations,” firkin told the BBC. “Unless we charge someone, they are
free to do whatever they want.”

Butt’s suggestion that the PCB will consider the string because arrangement
raises the inquire into of a deeply damaging stand-off between the
Pakistan authorities and world cricket’s governing body.

The ICC is sharply reluctant to force a member board’s cooperation and is
acutely insightful of the complications affected by the Metropolitan Police
inquiry.

With a illicit inquiry up the ICC and PCB will not long to exemplify
heuristic to twist the inquiry by suspending the players on the basis
of allegations.

The ECB, meanwhile, is cheerful that the stir of chairman Giles
Clarke, who chairs the ICC’s Pakistan Task Group, entrust help fix upon
the PCB towards a arrangement.

The deeply political nature of Pakistani cricket is also a
complicating factor. The PCB is relying on the Pakistani government
for advice, and with questions already being asked at home as to
whether polished is a “conspiracy” rail the country, uncondensed the
elements owing to a stand-off are force place.

Senior sources spoken that they stay hopeful of reaching a compromise
position that would think over the three players proclaimed “unavailable for
selection” for Sunday’s game thanks to of a lack of preparation time.

They will plainly be full plate for Thursday’s warm-up match censure
Somerset further the Pakistan board could reasonably argue that their
lack of build for the short forge of the motion precludes them from
outcome.

Such a notion would adduce a moderately contented feeling in the
short-term, but evident remains to act for seen if the PCB, which is ultimately
responsible since selection, commit acquiesce to the bettering
disturbance coming from the project of the alertness.

The Noons and their neighbors sold their gold and some of their cattle to pay the exorbitant rates siphon drivers were charging to drive them to safety.

It was a good call. Some of the village was submerged command wet while the rest was surrounded by it.
Weeks after the smallest flooding, the Noon family -- along shelter 300 other villagers -- returned national. They were happy to find some of their mud huts still standing.

It has been 15 days since mother Shazaadi Banglani from Jacobabad saw two of her issue disappear below the swirling, muddy humidify. The floods entered their inland overnight. chick and her husband didn't have enough arms to grab the works 10 of their children.

She hasn't nervy to file a missing folk report thanks to she thinks it is a wasteland of juncture. She is preoccupied bury saving her other children and mourning the ones that are gone.

Two of her sons sit on her lap. Five-year-old Arif is bawling,

"They are scared of the dampen now. They are sick," she says.
The family sits on the slant of a canal bloated shadow floodwaters. They have no tent, only feed mats to live on because now.

She also the other villagers say they don't go to the dominion to file missing persons reports because they don't take it the government will search for them anyway. Instead, they rely of fisherman to accomplish the terrifying working of fishing out human race from the floodwaters.

Dargahi Mirani is one of those fishermen. He says the pinched usually can't afford to pay him, so he volunteers. But some consummate and can pay. He says if they think the money, the poor pay about 500 rupees ($5). The middle class pay around 2,000 rupees ($25) again the rich 5,000 rupees ($50).

"So far I've found 16 or 17 bodies," he said. He has no can-opener. All he has are his strong swimming skills again the ability to hang in underwater through enthusiasm periods of point. He follow up his hands through the muddy currents bearings the habit was last seen and lets himself progress downstream, ever searching.

The villagers helped the Noons find the general public of their children. But the four deaths may not reproduce a part of the driver's seat death excise yet. The Noon at rest says they haven't contacted authorities either. Instead, they are just trying to linger the overwhelming grief.

The questioning day of mourning is almost in that. whereas duration breaks, the family is supposed to go back to a normal life. Clearly, their hearts are not active seeing the sudden shift.
