Bangs! I haven't worn bangs since I was a little girl but I thought I would try it with my natural curls. Why not you only live once...I'm actually loving it. It's fun, funky and edgy and you don't have to worry about how you want your hair to fall. I was actually inspired by my little cousin who got bangs cut in her straight hair and I loved it. My bangs are still long enough to pull back if I need to that's the beauty of shrinkage! See a positive for shrinkage! I might add a few highlights. Are you thinking of changing your look?

What your hair needs

Hair is actually very simple we do alot of things to make it more complicated.
Hair just need to be clean, condition, & trimmed
Hair needs to be shampooed once or twice every 2 weeks or whenever you feel the hair is dirty. What people forget about is the skin underneath their hair called the scalp which is still part of the body and it needs to be cleaned just like how you clean your skin. Think about all the things we do in a day and the environment we are in sometimes. Our hair and scalp absorbs alot of that. Therefore going a month or more without shampooing is not good for your hair or health.

Conditioning- We need to condition to soften the hair making it easier to moisturize. Conditioner is like lotion for your hair stands making them more supple and smooth over time. Curly girls need more conditioning than straight girl because due to the ringlets we have, things don't slide down the hair as quick. The tighter your ringlets the harder it is.

Trims- Yes they are needed. Every hair needs trims whether you're natural or not. Some stylist say it wrong...trims dont make your hair grow but it does help you maintain length. How??? Because your hair split regardless. It's just part of the hair's cycle but you need trims to keep it under control. I like to tell clients to get one every 3 to 4 months because it gives your hair time to grow and hopefully your damage shouldn't exceed your growth. HOPEFULLY sometimes is does or can. If you dont trim your splits will continue to go up therefore causing on going damage and thinning to the hair.

Of course, use your styling product afterwards. More key things use good quality shampoos and conditioners and don't wait too long to get trims.

Do you hear this one alot? I cant go Natural it's not for me. God made you natural why wouldn't it be for you. I rather for someone to say I don't want to be natural then I can respect their choice. Going Natural is a state of mind. You have to be open minded enough to just do it. If you really want to go natural know that everyone in your circle isnt going to agree with your decision at first. You do however need a friend, family, coworker etc. Who can support you. You also need a stylist who truly understand natural hair. You dont have to leave your old stylist but have another one who know about caring for your now or about to be naturally curly hair. All the beautiful natural heads you see probably didn't start off with great looking hair. It takes time, education, proper care to make your naturally curly locks flawless. So if you want to go natural only You yes you is the person holding you back. I said it so many times before my naturally curly locks are one of the best things to ever to happen to me!

Why I do hair

I wanted to write this article after I got few people who didn't quite understand what I did with hair. My whole thing with going natural is I wanted to wear my true texture and make it easier on myself than when I was relaxed. I'm truly all about making my routine easy but I want to look good at the same time. Let me start back a few years before I went natural. I always wanted the curly hair like I have now and always inquired to my stylists at the time on how to get it. I was told honey you just don't have that kind of hair. You know I wanted the hair like Tia and Tamera on sister sister, Cree Summer (Freddy on Different world) I loved that look! Back then my hair did appear to be very kinky when it wasn't relaxed. I remember one time at a party at college this guy came up to me and my two friends one was asian, and the other was black with natural hair but had an effortless curl pattern and me relaxed. He told my asian friend that she had beautiful silky hair, told my natural friend with beautiful curls she had good hair, and told me that my hair can take a relaxer...I felt some kind of way with that remark. It was like he was saying my hair only look good because I have a relaxer in it and I think that's when I started considering going natural to not only prove him wrong but prove all people wrong about our hair. I always knew a little about hair but I went into further research. I started with youtube way back before the natural hair thing was even popular up there. I got some good information and great styling tips up there but need to learn more about haircare so I dug further....I lost my job moved to California with my husband. Decided to enroll in beauty school to learn more about hair care at the time was the "Queen" of twist outs but realized by what I was learning and how my hair felt they may not be the best style for me and they we're too damn time consuming so I starting learning about the importance of hydration and would ask my teachers more about it. I studied hydration outside of class not just your hair but skin, plants, and everything. Hydration is the key to everything! So when I got that knowledge a light bulb came on inside of me to hydrate my hair more often afterall if we have the driest texture then why do we run from water we need to run to it. So I took it upon myself to start hydrating my hair. So many people and other stylist would say hydrate by drinking water well that's true but your hair needs it's own hydration so you would have to actually physically get water on it more often especially when you are wearing your natural texture. To make this long story shorter I committed to hydrating my hair and started to see my hair change right in front of my eyes. I was actually starting to get the curls like Freddy and Sister Sister. So my point in telling you my back story is to let you know I was just like most of you. If you want the curl it takes time. I was told that my hair was too nappy to have the curly hair like I wanted but it's not the case honestly most people in general but especially women of color don't know how to properly take care of their hair or too stuck in their ways to change. I came into this to show YOU that your isn't what you think it is. It's more beautiful than you can ever imagine only if you are willing to listen and not let other make you feel less about your hair. Our hair is actually quite easy with the right care. Not saying it's easy at the beginning but it gets easy and so well worth it. So for anyone who come see me for hair sure I can style it for you but I want to show you how to actually care for your hair the easy and proper way. Plus there's other things to life like family. I don't want to spend alot of that time dealing with my hair or limiting myself because of my hair. That's why I always start everyone on the same routine and once you get that down then we can have fun with styles because once the hair is hydrated it's healthy. Without healthy hair there is NO STYLE!

How do you get 2nd day hair with a wash n go

I always get 2nd day hair but the reason why is because my hair has my curl pattern memorized which is what you want to work up to so I don't even have to tie my hair up sometimes but here are some things you can do to help get 2nd day hair.

-My favorite Hydrate Hydrate Hydrate (meaning cowash more often)
-Tie hair in a very loose ponytail (for tighter textures or thicker hair)
-Put in a pineapple (for looser textures and thinner hair)
-Sleep on a satin pillow case
-Just tie your edges with a satin scarf and let the rest of the hair out
-Wear a satin bonnet but know you will have to do some fluffing

My suggestion for a wash n go is to not make it last a week without rewetting. The point of doing them is to get hydration in the hair making them last over a week defeats the purpose.

Professional Quality vs Store Brand Shampoos and Conditioners

I was like so many other people who thought the store brands were ok to use but I was challenged by another styist to use only professional products and I will see a difference. Well I took her up on that challenge and have been doing so for the past 2 months and I see a BIG difference. Don't get me wrong I always use professional shampoos and deep conditioners but when it came to co washing I would use the cheap conditioners in the drug store because I figure I'm not deep conditioning with it or leaving it in the hair very long so it won't hurt. I'm just detangling with it. WRONG!!! Due to the number of times I cowash my hair during the week (about 2-3 times a week) it was taking a toll on my hair. What I found with the professional products when I was use it actually left my hair feeling smoother, less shedding, and not always needing to use as much after product or styling product. With the cheaper conditioner my hair felt dryer, rougher, and I didn't hold my curls as long as when I started using the Pro stuff. This is something I already knew but I guess I didn't think about it that way...Alot of the cheaper or generic products cost less than the original or professional brand because they use alot of filler meaning watering it down or using cheaper oils (like mineral oil) in order make more for less causing them to sell more for a bigger profit. The higher grade products use quality ingredients not watered down therefore the product cost more so they have to charge more but at the same time your hair is getting the essential that it needs and the right quality and quanitity. I also had quite few of my client who told me they have been exclusively using the pro brand and seen a big difference in their hair and I actually could feel a bigger difference in the hair. This is how you know if a product isn't doing much for you...It's when you wash the conditioner out and feel your hair if your hair doesn't feel hydrated or smooth after rinsing the conditioner out and if it feeling still dry and almost kind of like wire then you might be using a product your hair doesn't like. Also if your hair seems to be drying up too quick after rinsing the conditioner out is a sign that the conditioner is not affective. What I mean by this is the hair should still feel soft and damp not as if it's starting to dry granted you need to use the products a few time to see if it's making a difference but after 3 weeks no change then you might need to switch. I'm not going to state the products I no longer use but I will state the ones I do use. I love REDKEN. Redken actually have a whole line for curly girls. I haven't tried the whole line but I do like the shampoo even though it lathers a little and I LOVE the conditioners. Of course if you've been to me you know I LOVE hair rules, below are a few other conditioner I like. I have others but these are the ones off the top of my head that I like.

I'm getting bored of my hair again. I'm thinking of going back darker. I actually think I like my hair darker or at least for right now. I was looking at pictures of my hair since 2011 and I must say I really liked my hair. Here's a collage of my hair from that time with different colors and styles. I was able to maintain the health with the different colors by keeping it hydrated and regular trims. Sometimes I would have to get cuts or want cut because I wanted something different but it's ok it's only hair and it grows back everytime.

I just did a photo shoot to display when the hair is hydrated it can go back and forth curly or straight or straight to curly. My models were beautiful! I tried to use people with different hair types and complexions. I plan on doing more photoshoots. These ladies hair turned out so great because they do hydrate the hair. I keep telling people no matter what your hair look like if you hydrate you can make it work for you and it will look GOOD! My new focus is to try and stay positive. It has been working because it's been getting all these blessings due to me staying positive. I was listening to Pastor Troy Grambling of Potential Church and he talked about being positive and how it can attract other positive things. I've heard this before but I don't know what it was about how he was saying it made me actually listen. I must say I'm glad I did because I've been so much happier. Getting Back in Shape

I'm starting to get motivated to get back in shape if you are like me...you have spurts where you are in the mood to work out. This time I waited much longer to get back to working out. I realize I'm getting older and that I need to take care of my body better. I haven't let myself go that much... But I need to get myself back in shape quick. Either tomorrow or Monday I'm going to join a gym. I feel I'm at the point where I need to go some where to exercise so I can focus on it more. Working out at home is just a distraction to me now. So with that being said who's going to join this workout challenge with me.... I'm trying to have my hair and body looking GREAT...lol

I tried a new product and talked about it on Facebook! It's mostly Dry. The product I use is Curl Unleashed by organic root stimulator. My Pros It makes my hair feel good, moisturizing, didn't have to use much, I like the smell and if you don't like it the smell goes away when dry. My Cons it's doesn't have an easy application. (That will be the 1 thing that would keep me from being Excited about this product) It goes on kind of tough. I spent more time putting it on that I like and the price for a drug store...I've paid more for a lot of other products but at least I know there are other things that work for ME that's a lot less expensive. This product was only $12 or $14 its more than I wanted to pay but I was curious. This price isn't bad but conditioner works for me. Will I buy again I don't know but at least I know there's something else that will work for me. This product will be good for a twist out but I must say I don't think it will work very well as a wash n go product on a curl pattern that's harder to define. It also claims there will be NO shrinkage but as you can see I have shrinkage but I didn't expect that to be true anyway. I just hate when they put that on products...I do like the product over all but it didn't WOW me but I am glad that more drug store products are being offered for Natural and Curly hair! We've officially changed the Hair Product Industry!

I"m so bad about updating this blog. I'm really going to try and stay on top of it hopefully. Wow a lot has changed since the new year. One of the biggest things is I got another job at another salon in Sunrise Fl which is basically the Ft Lauderdale area. I really love the atmosphere and the knowledge I'm gaining from the other stylist there. It's called Shear luxe hair studio! We recently did a photo shoot for the website. When the site is complete I will post it. I hope you all are doing well. I will post again soon. I want women of color or just women with curls to understand how important water is to the hair. That's the one thing we have been lacking from our routine is water. So I will talk more about that in a very near future posting but for now enjoy your weekend or the rest of it! It's a NEW Year!

I'm so sorry I have been slacking but I've been very busy I will do better. I'm so excited about this new year. Some new things are happening for me. I got another job working at another salon but I still work at my original salon too. I'm so excited about the new salon because it is a green salon...I LOVE THAT! Our vision is the same as far as promoting healthy hair and a healthy environment too. I really hate the Keratin Treatment...I hate the smell and how I feel afterwards. So I opt not to do them. I care more about my health. The great thing about the Green Salon which is Called Shear Luxe Hair Studio is that the products then use work great and they are environmentally friendly. My clientele is building up and I'm very excited about that. I have you all to thank! I just feel that this new year is going to be a blessing. ok I've tried conditioner only in my hair in the past before and it was a bust but I was recently inspired to try it again and it's worked and I actually like it. Before when I tried it looked like a puffy fro and now it's makes my hair look like the gels. You're probably wondering why it is different now. I will tell you why because of all the other reason why my hair changed because of hydration. Getting the hair hydrated is the key to everything. Hydration makes the hair easier to manage and I have achieved this. The only way to get the hair hydrated is constance water. (meaning co wash often) I will talk more about hydration in another posting but I'm so happy for my hair. I can style it will just conditioner. I could never do this before believe me I tried. I'm a firm believer in the power of hydration. Picture above is my hair styled with conditioner. BTW I used Tresemme's Moisture Rich ( I got the new formula)

Linda: Water is our friend we were brain washed into believing that water would dry out our was and nothing is further from the truth. I keep a small spray bottle of water and olive oil in the bathroom and everytime I go in there I spritz my hair. I dont have to worry about build up because I co wash my hair so often.

How to Maintain Length

1. Trim every 3-4 months don't skip out on this.
2. Moisturized the ends consistently
3. Don't allow the hair to get too dry
4. Detangle hair regularly with conditioner and water to keep from having breakage.
5. Deep Condition with heat at least once a month.
6. Don't use too much heat in a short amount of time.
7. Sleep with a satin pillow case or bonnet because cotton absorbs moisture quickly.
8. Lay off the Protein if you have kinkier texture too much protein isn't good. Actually can cause breakage too if use too excessively.
9. Last but NOT LEAST give that hair some WATER. Hair needs water just like everything else.

3 Year Anniversary of My Big Chop...and Trimming...

I'm so happy that it has been 3 years since I cut my hair and decided to be completely natural. I have accomplished my goal for my hair. I made my hair easier to do, more versatile, and healthy. I have become a genius when it comes to MY hair. Two things that have been a big part in helping my hair grow long, look thicker and just remain healthy(there is a such thing as healthy hair) Hair, nails and skin are made of the same content just different proportions but you still have to keep your skin and nail healthy right?...So why wouldn't you have to keep the hair healthy it's still attached to your body. (Someone told me there's no such thing as healthy hair just want to clear that up.) The 2 things that contribute to my grow are wear wash and gos (the right way) and trimming my hair periodically. I trim when I need to and I do a REAL trim. I don't do search and destroys, I don't trim my hair while in twist, and so on. If you want he goal of having mostly even hair, thicker looking hair, and less split ends then you want to avoid those other methods. I will tell you wants wrong with both methods. They sound nice in theory but the fact is when hair is uneven and if there's even one split end if the hair next to it is a different length then it's going to catch on to the other hair and made it split and then it become a ripple down effect. If you don't around and do an all over trim then you can miss that one split end that is causing the problem and an over trim will mad it easier for you to seek out where's the problem quicker. I really dislike the twist cutting because you are not seeing all of your hair. You will miss some on your hair that might have the problem and it's not a true trim. If your goal is not all 3 of these healthy, thicker looking, long hair then carry on with what you are doing. If you are a natural who like to wear your hair straight you should definitely avoid these cutting method for trimming. Remember this is only for trimming not for shaping the hair. How I trim is on straight hair...I know some don't like to straighten you hair but "straight hair tells you the Truth about your hair." It reveals just how well or bad your hair is doing! I trim my hair usually every 3-6 months but you can tell when you need a trim even when hair is curly. If you ends are looking and feeling rough, ends are very tangled and I mean very tangled and if you can see through them well then you need a trim.

Here's a test take your index finger and thumb and rub it down your strand and it your feel a "BIG" texture difference then that's an indication that you need a trim or if you let it go too long a CUT!

You can see how some of the ends are tangling up on each other causing the hair to be hair to comb and break.

This is a frontal view not too bad here compared to the back but I still see some so I will go ahead and nip in the bud.

After the Trim

I can actually curl my ends under now that's another sign of split end when you can't curl your ends.

Hair looks fuller and smoother now and HEALTHY

I still have growth and now I can be haircut free for at least another 3 months.

This is all the hair I cut off my entire head not much considering that I went 6 months without a trim but my hair was begging for one and I listened.

Keratin Treatment...Good or Bad

Keratin Treatment...Good or Bad

Well that depends on what your goal is...First let's understand what the Keratin Treatment is. Keratin is not marketed as a straighter but is marketed to make the hair smoother. Now how does that help??? Well when the hair is smoother it can make your hair easier to manage. The frizz in our hair is what really contribute to the time we spend on our hair. How many times have you passed the flat iron or straighten comb through the hair until you got it smoother... with the Keratin Treatment it can make your hair so much faster to do. I've had people come in who has a keratin with afros who want their hair straight and I think to myself well this is going to take awhile but when I start doing the person hair I soon realize how much easier and quicker it is to do. Another question is can the keratin help with my curly hair? Yes it can but it depends on what you are going for. From what I've seen the Keratin Treatment does tend to loosen the curl pattern some and for others it can loosen the curl pattern a lot but the results vary. I've also seen some people who are happy to have their curls a bit looser so it works for them. Most people whether they are curly or straight like the Keratin because of how much easier it is to do their hair. As a stylist I must admit it is easier to do a person hair with a Keratin and what I mean by that is the process to so much quicker. Do I have a Keratin? No. Why not? I don't feel I need one. I"m natural and I LOVE my hair just the way it is and I feel that it's easy for me to manage my hair. When I wear my hair straight I could probably use the Keratin but I won't because I wear my hair curly a lot more often than I wear it straight. I know of naturals who get the Keratin and it works out fine for them but I suggest not getting it every 4 months like some stylist suggest because depending on the brand I believe some Keratins last way longer that 4 months. Which is not a bad thing. Also if you are relaxed and wanting to go natural Keratin might actually be a good way to transition especially if you want to still wear your hair straight even if you don't want to go natural and just want a healthier alternative to relaxing just do a keratin. Yes the Keratin is actually healthier than the relaxer. Even though it has formaldehyde it's still better than putting that Sodium Hydroxide to your head. If you don't believe me look it up. Anyway below are the Pro's a Con's to Keratin Treatment

How to pick the right stylist for you

Since being in the hair business I have learned there are stylist different kinds of stylists and almost everyone have different opinion about hair. I'm going to share some tips in what to do and look for when finding a new stylist or what I like to call myself hair care consultant

1. Get to know your hair. This is the MOST important one! Never tell them that you don't have a clue about your hair because if you get a stylist who's an opportunist then they will take advantage of the situation.

2. Find someone who's not arrogant. I know some stylist can be too over confident where they can sound condecending to the clients. You don't want that person because they will never do your hair the way you like.

3. Make sure the stylist have the look you are going for. This is a biggie! Example if you are natural you don't want to go to a relaxed stylist or one who promotes relaxers or vice versa

4. Get a stylist who's easy to talk to. The reason for this is so you can tell her what you want with ease without him or her questioning you.

5. Make sure your stylist have the same mentality about hair just like you do. For example if you goal is to use minimum heat and you know that your stylist loves firing up that press and comb stove then you two might not be a match.

6. Make sure your stylist offer treatments from time to time especially after doing chemical services. This is important because it shows that they actually care about the health of your hair. With me if I have a client who is badly in need of a treatment I will sometime just do it anyway. I care more about the health of their hair verses how much money I can make off of them.

7. Last make sure you and your stylist are partners. Don't let the stylist make all the choices. You must have some input also. This shows that the stylist value your opinion.
