At least 30 people have on Monday been injured after a blast exploded in a building in central Nairobi. There are fears that some people might have been killed in the explosion.Kenya police and firefighters sealed off the area before the injured people were rushed to Kenyatta National Hospital for treatments.There are still confusion over the exact cause of the blast, however, Kenya police chief, Mathew Iteere said in a press conference that an electric fault might have caused the blast.The assistant for Kenya interior security minister, Orwa Ojode, said that the police will investigate a possible bomb blast.There has been a heavy traffic jam in the city center after police condoned off Moi Avenue and forced car drivers to use alternative routes.

An explosion ripped through a building full of small shops in downtown Nairobi on Monday, wounding at least 30 people, the police commissioner said.He could not immediately say what caused the early morning blast that sent smoke billowing out of the building and over the city. Items for sale in the shops — like shoes and clothes — were scattered on the ground.People with bloody wounds received medical care, as authorities tried to usher hundreds of people in the street away from the scene. Security blocked off areas around the building with yellow tape.The force of the explosion ripped apart the one-story building's aluminum roof, but a high-rise building with a glass exterior right next to the blast did not appear to sustain major damage.Police Commissioner Mathew Iteere said at least 30 people were wounded. Another high-ranking police official said there were no obvious signs that the blast was caused by a terrorist's bomb. No ball bearings or nails — lethal shrapnel packed into bombs — were found, and officials were investigating the possibility that a faulty electrical line caused the explosion. The official said he could not be quoted by name."Let me not speculate this is a terrorist attack. It could be a wire fault," said another official Orwa Ojode, assistance minister for internal security. Al-Shabab militants from neighboring Somalia have long threatened to carry out substantial attacks in Kenya following Kenya's decision last October to send troops into Somalia to pursue al-Shabab militants.
Kenya has suffered a series of grenade attacks in recent months, but Monday's blast appeared to have been caused by something larger than a grenade.

Dear Fellow American,

Memorial Day is quickly approaching, and to most Americans, this means the beginning of summer. In reality, it's the one day of the year we dedicate to remembering those who gave all to protect the freedoms we cherish. As you plan your first barbecue of the season and prepare for the warm weather, I urge you to keep in mind the real reason we celebrate Memorial Day: to pay tribute to America's veterans and fallen soldiers.

I remember the way our Vietnam Veterans were treated upon returning home. It was a difficult time in our country's history and we must do all we can to make sure that when our men and women are sent to war they are never again forced into the shadows and treated badly, as our returning Vietnam Veterans were. That's one of the reasons I am so active in the veterans' community and today serve as Honorary Grand Marshal of The American Veterans Center's National Memorial Day Parade in Washington, DC. I'm writing today because this year's parade is our first public opportunity to honor our newest generation of veterans, the young men and women who bravely served in Iraq, sacrificing family relationships, jobs, and economic stability to go off and fight for our country.

Will you join me in paying tribute to our Iraq War veterans and all of America's veterans and active duty service members by marching in the National Memorial Day Parade on May 28? Somali troops seized a town on the outskirts of Mogadishu from Islamist militants on Friday after three days of fighting, the biggest victory over al-Shabab since the Somali government forces took control of the capital last August.

General Abdikadir Shiekh Ali Diini confirmed that joint forces of TFG and AMISOM have completely taken control of Afgoye.Akunda said in an exclusive interview to terror free Somalia that government troops alongside AMISOM have taken over key positions in the town such as Afgoye Bridge and the main police station.General Abdikadir admitted that 7 AMISOM soldiers were injured during the offensive to take over the town from al-Shabaab. General Abdikadir added that the offensive against al-Shabaab will continue and hailed the success of the Somali and AMISOM forces in past few days.Al-Shabaab forces left the town on Wednesday amid advancement of TFG and AMISOM forces.Afgoye has been a stronghold for al-Shabaab since the group withdrew from the capital in 2011.

African Union and Somali troops seized a town on the outskirts of Mogadishu on Friday from Islamist militants after three days of fighting, marking the biggest victory over al-Shabab since the pro-government forces took control of the capital last August.

A top United Nations official, meanwhile, announced that a presidential election in Somalia will be held on Aug. 20 — with votes cast by lawmakers instead of by ordinary Somalis because of continued insecurity in the country.

Lt. Col. Paddy Ankunda, the spokesman for African Union forces, said the troops moved into Afgoye on Friday and that most of the town was under the coalition's control.

More than 300,000 internally displaced Somalis live in and around Afgoye, located 30 kilometers (20 miles) north of Mogadishu. Thousands fled the area in overloaded vans and donkey carts the previous two days amid gunfire and explosions.

African Union "and Somali troops are here now, and al-Shabab abandoned the town," resident Aden Muse said by phone. "The fighting has stopped and people are indoors. We hope no more fighting will happen."

Soldiers have taken positions in the police and district headquarters, residents said.

"Tomorrow will be a new beginning for us," said another resident, Ubah Salad.

The U.N. representative for Somalia, Augustine Mahiga, said Friday at a news conference in neighboring Kenya that the pro-government forces needed to capture Afgoye for military and humanitarian reasons. He said al-Shabab manufactured its bombs in Afgoye and that the town "controls the exit and the entries to Mogadishu.

"And it has been the military concentration and headquarters of the Shabab. Hitting Afgoye would make a significant military breakthrough in the region of Mogadishu," the U.N. official said.

The Afgoye corridor between Mogadishu and Afgoye is home to the largest concentration of internally displaced people in the world, Mahiga added. He said aid agencies plan to begin helping them.

The U.N. recently approved a near doubling of the African Union force to more than 17,00 troops. Mahiga cautioned that the new troops are deploying far from Mogadishu and that, with pro-government forces being stretched, insurgents could infiltrate back into areas that have already been seized near the capital.

The next Somali presidential election will take place on Aug. 20, Mahiga said. Votes will be cast by members of a new 225-member parliament. Voting isn't being opened to the public because of a lack of security across the country.

In meetings this week in Ethiopia, Somali leaders worked toward adopting a new constitution and to end the transitional government's tenure. The U.N. mandate that authorizes Somalia's Transitional Federal Government expires on Aug. 20.

Somalia dissolved into anarchy in 1991 and has seen little government order since. The AU's defeat of al-Shabab in Mogadishu is the first time the capital has been secure in years. The U.N. and international community is pushing Somali leaders to make an orderly transition to the next phase of self-government with the election of a smaller parliament and a new vote for president.

A spokesman for the African Union Mission in Somalia says that AU and Somali forces have pushed Islamist militants out of a town on the outskirts of the capital, Mogadishu. Paddy Ankunda said Friday that the troops crossed into Afgoye earlier in the day and that most of the town was now under their control, while some fighting with al-Shabab militants was still going on.

The capture of Afgoye represents a major advance for African Union and Somali troops, who have made strong gains against al-Shabab over the last year. More than 300,000 internally displaced Somalis live around Afgoye, but Islamist rebels have blocked delivery of humanitarian aid for them.

Al-Shabab has held the Afgoye corridor for years in its campaign to overthrow Somalia's United Nations-backed transitional government and impose strict Islamic law. The group once controlled most of southern and central Somalia, but has steadily lost ground in the past 18 months to AU, Somali, Kenyan and Ethiopian forces.

The U.N. mission in Somalia has described the offensive as a "carefully planned operation" in which troops are taking every precaution to prevent harming civilians.

Somalia's main political groups ended three days of talks Wednesday agreeing to support a political process leading to a post-transitional government by August. Mogadishu (AMISOM) - AMISOM troops have today crossed the Shabelle River and secured all the major roads leading into and out of Afgooye town. The town is strategically located 30km from the capital,

Mogadishu, and governing routes to the port town of Marka, as well as the towns of Baidoa and Jowhar.
Leaders of the Al Qaeda-affiliated terror group, al Shabaab are believed to have fled the town, which was their main base in the region and where they were known to have been extorting revenues from farmers, traders and pastoralists.

On Monday, AMISOM launched a joint military operation with the Somali National Army, code-named ‘Operation Free Shabelle’ with the objective of securing the Afgooye corridor, home to the world’s largest concentration of internally displaced people. Operations are still ongoing to secure the market town of Elasha Biyaha. Harabsca, a trading centre located 26km from Mogadishu, has also been secured.

The Special Representative of the Chairperson of the African Union Commission (SRCC) for Somalia, Ambassador Boubacar Gaoussou Diarra said: “Securing the town of Afgooye is a great achievement for the Somali government and the Somali people. This will not only make possible the delivery of humanitarian assistance to the population, but will go a long way in consolidating the country’s peace process.”

AMISOM Force Commander, Lt. Gen. Andrew Gutti, applauded the AU troops for taking all the necessary precautions to prevent harm or injury to civilians. “The soldiers have conducted this operation in an exemplary manner,” he said. “During the operation, AMISOM troops specifically avoided entering the built up areas and camps around the main road to Afgooye.”

Earlier in the week, the UN Humanitarian Coordination for Somalia, Mark Bowden stated that the UN had “no reports of significant movements of people from Afgooye corridor” as a result of the operation.

The SNA will now conduct security operations inside the town to remove any remaining terrorist elements and to ensure it is safe.

The Force Commander appealed to all those Al Shabaab militants who are still hiding in the liberated areas to surrender and join the peace process. He assured them of safety should they choose to abandon the Al Qaeda-backed al Shabaab and join other Somalis in rebuilding their country.

Somalia has begun a major offensive to clear an Islamist militia allied to al-Qaida from the world's largest camp for people displaced by war and famine.The attack on al-Shabaab is the first time that Somalia's government troops, backed by African Union peacekeeping soldiers, have moved out of the capital Mogadishu and taken the fight to militia strongholds.Hundreds of soldiers pushed closer to the town of Afgoye, north-west of Mogadishu, where up to 400,000 people who fled their homes are squatting on land controlled by al-Shabaab.

The militants have banned aid groups from their territory, despite the effects of last year's famine and threats of further crop failures this year. It follows months of relative stability in the capital since the Islamists retreated in August last year.

Somali troops, AU peacekeepers advance on key Al-Shabaab stronghold As a sweeping military offensive enters its second day on the outskirts of the Somali capital Mogadishu, hundreds of government troops alongside African Union peacekeepers (AMISOM) today reached Arbiska, near Afgoye in Lower Shabelle region.

Allied troops backed by military tanks and armored vehicles moved deep into the outskirts early on Wednesday after deadly fighting broke out in the al-Shabaab strongholds of Elasha-Biyaha, Siinka, Lafoole, and Arbiska.At least 11 people were killed, including seven civilians, according to a residents in Lafoole who spoke to terror free somalia .“I don’t know how many people died, but I can assure you that three people are dead in Kahda where the fighting started today," Luul Ali, a resident in Kahda, told tf.sf .

Somali forces allegedly also shot eight civillians on the way at Boqolka cemetery of Boqolka village on suspicion of being al-Shabaab fighters fleeing. Four of the the eight people died and the other four were taken to Madina Hospital in Mogadishu.

Somalia’s third army commander, Colonel Abdullah Ageey, confirmed government troops have reached Arbiska and are heading to Afgoye with in the next hours.

“I’m speaking to you from Arbiska, which is close to Afgoye. We have clashed with the Al-Qaeda fighters for hours here before we attacked today. They have tried to defend themselves, but we forced them to run away and they are firing shots at us from a distance over there. We will be continuing to pursue them wherever they go, and we hope to cross into Afgoye with hours," said Colonel Ageey.

Residents in Afgoye town told TF.SF that they have seen al-Shabaab convoys heading to Walaweyn, 90km from Mogadishu.“I have seen large convoys of al-Shabaab fighters fleeing from the outskirts of Mogadishu. While I was on my way to work, I saw them heading towards Walaweyn district," one resident in Afgoye town told terror free Somalia .Other sources claimed that al-Shabaab's top leaders, Fuad Shongole, Hassan Dahir Aweys and Ali Dheere, all fled to Marka, south of Mogadishu, yesterday. TF.SF however, has been unable to confirm these claims.Radio Andalus radio, run by al-Shabaab, went off the air last night before the allied forces could reach the station.“Equipment from Andlus radio station was removed last night by the fighters, but it is not yet clear where they took it," said Abdikadir Mohamuud, a resident in Siinka.The fighting has blocked the strategic road which links between Afgoye and Mogadishu and has caused a massive displacement of people since the first round of this offensive started on Monday.Al-Shabaab has not yet commented on today's offensive, the largest to be conducted in the area since al-Shabaab vacated the capital last August.

Somali government forces backed by African Union peacekeeping troops on Tuesday moved on positions of the anti-government group Al-Shabaab on the outskirts of the capital Mogadishu, officials said, as cited by terror free somalia.

The allied forces launched the operation on the town of Afgooye, 30 km northwest of Mogadishu which is one of the key towns that remains under the control of the Al-Shabaab fighters.
The town is close to the camp of Elasha Biyaha which houses hundreds of thousands of displaced people who fled from the Mogadishu during the height of the violence back in 2007 and 2008.
The AU peacekeeping mission in Somalia said in a statement the operation was aimed at bringing peace and security to the "largest concentration of displaced people in the world."
The AU said they were trying to avoid built-up areas and that the African peacekeepers and Somali national army were making progress against Al-Shabaab.
"The Afgoye corridor holds one of the biggest concentrations of internally displaced people in the world. We are helping them by building security so that they can share in the economic revival of the capital. They will now be able to access humanitarian services and eventually return to their original homes in Mogadishu," Wafula Wamunyinyi, the Deputy Special Representative of the Chairperson of the African Union Commission, said in a statement.
The radical group of Al-Shabaab which is allied to al Qaida said it has repulsed the offensive by AU and Somali government forces.
Witnesses say that the rebels were forced to flee key positions on the outskirts of the capital Mogadishu including a key airstrip in the suburban district of Deynile. Residents have started to flee from their homes as fighting closed in Afgooye.
Reports said the Al-Shabaab commanders in Afgooye were using loudspeakers mounted on vehicles to call on people to join the fight against Somali government troops and AU peacekeepers.
Somali government military commanders said that the allied forces were closing to the main town of Afgoye on two fronts while a strategic supply route linking southern and central provinces controlled by Al-Shabaab was taken by government forces and AU peacekeepers.
The Al-Shabaab has lately been losing ground to Somali government forces and AU troops. Its fighters fled Mogadishu last year after intense offensive by Somali troops and AU peacekeepers.

A United States federal appeals court upheld the convictions of five Somali pirates on Wednesday, making clear that the definition of piracy includes violent attempts to hijack a ship even if unsuccessful.

The Fourth United States Circuit Court of Appeals, based in Richmond, Va., upheld what federal prosecutors described as the first United States piracy convictions in 190 years, finding that an individual did not have to seize or rob a ship to have committed piracy. The court rejected an effort by five Somali men to overturn their convictions for attacking a United States Navy ship, the Warship Nicholas, that they mistook for a merchant vessel in April 2010. The men were sentenced to life in prison, the punishment for piracy, and an additional 80 years.

In a separate decision, the Fourth Circuit also reversed the dismissal of piracy charges against Somali defendants in a case stemming from a thwarted attack on another Navy ship, the Ashland. (REUTERS)

6 Reasons NOT To Join Shabaab: Courtesy Omar Hammami

If you are a young American male considering joining a foreign terrorist organization in general and al-Shabaab in Somalia in particular, I highly recommend you to read Omar Hammami’s autobiography (available on the Internet, but not yet on Kindle). Unfortunately for Hammami, he arrived in Somalia before the release of al Qaeda’s (Mis) Adventures in Horn of Africa. Had he waited until after the summer of 2007, Hammami could have read al Qaeda’s primary source documents from 1992-1994 and diverted his plan. Al Qaeda’s internal documents ’92-’94 read just like Hammami’s bio from 2012 – tales of suffering, betrayal and defeat. (For some highlights from the 90’s AQ documents, see this post) The irony is that Bin Laden learned from these Somalia pitfalls of the 90’s and I’m certain they influenced his decision to block a Shabaab-AQ merger as debated in this new Abottabad document released this month. (See SOCOM-2012-0000006-HT)

In follow up to yesterday’s post on Fazul-Hammami connections, I present 6 reasons for why joining al-Shabaab or any extremist group in Somalia appears to be a particularly bad idea; above the obvious point that joining a terrorist group in general is never a good idea. So here it goes:

#1 – Betrayal

This reason more than any other should be the biggest deterrent for those considering joining al-Shabaab. If malaria, dehydration, starvation, rival clans or foreign armies don’t kill you, other members of Shabaab will. I hypothesized a couple months back about 3 or 4 scenarios describing why Hammami was in a particularly precarious place in Somalia. The crux of my theory: certain elements inside Shabaab were/are killing off other members of Shabaab and al Qaeda. Well, his bio doesn’t disappoint in this regard. Starting on page 79, Hammami describes how Shabaab fighters routinely betray each other:

It was during this short stay that we met up with Abu Cabdallaah as-Sudaani (Ciise Cusman Ciise), and a few other Muhaajirs. Cabdul Qaadir Komandos also joined our group at this stage. Abu Cabdallaah had almost died of Malaria and he wouldn’t take on a leadership position for quite a while. He did, however, come with news that our previous Amiir had been martyred in a very strange incident; leaving him the natural successor. Of course I don’t blame Abu Cabdallaah for his death. But the story along with the picture on his camera phone showing that the bullet was aimed precisely for Abu Talxah’s heart makes me want to lay the blame on someone other than the Kuffaar.
The reason for this is the fact that there were multiple groups of Muhaajiriin and leaders in the area of Lekta during the time of Abu Talxah’s death and none of them were attacked by the Ethiopians until quite a while after the fateful shots rang out. In addition to that tid bit it was also said that he was called to have a meeting with some of the other leaders and he went accompanied by one of his lieutenants (while both of them were only armed with pistols). Minutes later shots could be heard and his lieutenant returned unscratched. He allegedly fought off the Ethiopians single handedly with his pistol while Abu Talxah, on the other hand, was shot square in the heart.
That lieutenant was later martyred trying to defend the wives of the Muhaajiriin (Abu Talxah’s included) on the Kenyan border. Once again, he was trying to fend off the Kenyan soldiers with only his pistol. That time, however, he was hit and martyred. No one till this day really knows the true story about his death, but there were definitely plausible motives amongst some of the other groups who didn’t take kindly to Abu Talxah’s insistence upon starting a new group in Kismaayu under the spiritual “leadership” of Xasan Turky.

So foreign fighters, when you get to Somalia, look around, one of the people standing next to you is quite likely to be your killer.

#2 – Clan Infighting

Hammami’s group, on the way to fight foreign forces, routinely encounters other clans they must fight or dissuade to get to their primary enemy. The original AQ documents from ’92-’94 continuously discuss how clan infighting derailed AQ operatives intentions (AFGP-2002-800640, pg 20ish, think the quote is Abu Hafs, something like “Tribalism, nasty tribalism, leave it [Somalia]“). Here’s a truck conundrum where fighting occurred with the Mooryaan.

It turns out that another truck full of Mooryaan came up to us and they shot out our radiator. In response, the brother in the passenger side of our truck shot out the brains of their driver! That was what led the Mooryaan to flee. Instead of chasing them, the brothers started trying to figure out which truck to board now that ours was in need of a radiator.

Later, Hammami notes how he wishes Axmad Madobe would have been killed as he later switches sides.

But before we actually set off we were awakening one night before dawn by the sounds of a million bullets trying to leave the barrel of one gun in about half a second, at regular pulses for a good minute or so. Later on we realized that we were close to Kolbiyo where Axmad Madobe and his crew were being blitzed from the sky. I heard that Abu Muxammad’s boy, Muxammad, was there and that only he (by virtue of running into the forest) and Axmad Madobe survived. In hindsight, it would have been better for Axmad Madobe to have died instead of coming back just to join the Kenyans in attacking Somaalia.

#3 – Water and Food

For Hammami’s crew, there’s either too much water or not enough. When traveling, their trucks inevitably get stuck in feet of mud. Even when they do find water, the source is fraught with competition from wild animals, rival clans or foreign armies. See pg. 74-75 for an interesting description as it appears that firefights in Southern Somalia are most likely to occur around watering holes as it brings everyone to a central point.

This water source as it turned out happened to be one used frequently by the Kenyan army.

Hammami and fellow fighters constantly fought for food to continue to survive.

There was also the time in which we sent a man off to come back with news and it seems that instead of bringing us the money and provisions he only brought us a small portion and kept the rest for himself.

#4 – It’s HOT!

For some reason, Hammami didn’t consider how hot Somalia is until he got there.

It was just as well anyway because the sun in Somaalia happens to be a few thousand light years closer to the earth’s surface than any other country. Any attempt to leave the little cover and shade the tiny trees can afford leads to an immediate heat stroke.

#5 – Going to the bathroom is difficult

Maybe the funniest revelation of Hammami’s bio, how difficult it is to go to the bathroom when you are dehydrated, malnourished and under constant military pressure from the land and air. This passage speaks for itself. P. 72

By this time everyone was complaining of strange slime in their stool and I don’t believe anyone was anywhere close to ‘regular.’ The trouble with using the bathroom was ten fold. There was the problem of finding a plastic bottle that was not currently in use at the moment, then there was the problem of lugging your hundred pound gun around while trying to fill that bottle up without falling in or getting your gun unnecessarily wet. We must remember now that the Bedouins and planes are still marauding about. After these tasks are completed it becomes necessary to find a place that is not inhabited by human or animal, that is not currently being used as a bathroom, that can not be stumbled upon by anyone while you’re in your comfort zone, and finally a place that is not too far to cause yourself to become lost or the unknown victim of some tragedy that people never came to know of. If you finally reach that place without loosing an eye from the thorns you may then use the bathroom while clutching your gun in the event that a wild animal or enemy approaches. After all is well and done it is finally time to retrace your steps and eventually return to your place of languishing under the trees until the next round.

#5 – Mosquitos!

What’s the number one killer of Shabaab members? The same as all Africans – malaria. Not only does Hammami repeatedly describe being eaten by mosquitos, he details how many of his comrades continue to expire from the disease. P. 77

that place of ours was cleared out once Jacfar Dheere breathed his last. He had been hanging in despite all odds for a long time but each day he had become weaker and weaker. He had to be carried to the bathroom, he had to be forced to eat or drink, which he normally vomited up, and he was in a generally wretched situation.

#6 – Transportation

Moving from place to place seems nearly impossible for Shabaab. Hammami’s bio discusses trucks maybe more than anything. Hammami’s band is always 1) searching for trucks, 2) riding in trucks to unknown locations, 3) getting trucks stuck in the mud and 4) quarreling with others over the ownership or movement of trucks. I literally laughed out loud as one of the funniest excerpts of the original AQ documents ’92-’94 describes how Sufis (Called “Big Hairs” in the documents, see AFGP-2002-600104- Author Saif al-Islam, p. 21ish) steal their truck “and how upset they were but they will go get it back”. Hammami’s group cannot ever seem to get where they want to go. Here’s a funny transportation excerpt from Hammami p.69:

One Somaali brother, who looked as though he was new to the matter of practicing his religion, decided to take my seat by force. When I objected, along with a few other brothers, he pretended not to hear anything. Finally, I got off the truck and asked for my bag. Everyone refused to sit up to give me my bag because they too feared losing their positions. Eventually Axmad Madobe climbed out of the truck and asked me nicely to get back on the truck. I explained to him the situation but he just coaxed me into leaving the whole matter.

I could probably come up with 100 reasons from this document, but I’ll stop here for now. Interested to hear how Hammami’s debacle shakes out….. via selectedwisdom

A self-confessed 'American jihadist' has released an online autobiography chronicling his journey from what he called his 'privileged' childhood in Alabama to the top of America's most wanted list as an al-Qaeda terrorist in Somalia. Omar Hammami, whose jihadist nom de guerre is Abu Mansur al-Amriki, said he was releasing the first part of his memoir, "The Story of an American Jihaadi, Part One," because of the "unpredictable nature" of his chosen life. Indeed, Hammami faces danger from both the United States, with unmanned aerial drones constantly buzzing overhead hunting for men just like him, as well as from his fellow jihadists, who he says want to kill him over "differences regarding matters of Sharia and strategy."

The publication of the memoir ends widespread speculation which began in April when unconfirmed reports from mainstream media outlets such as Fox News claimed that Hammami was beheaded by rival factions of al-Shaabab, the al-Qaeda-linked terrorist group which the American joined shortly after entering the East African country in 2006. Hammami had helped fuel speculation of his demise when he released a video in March in which he said his life had been threatened by some of his comrades. "I record this message today because I feel my life may be endangered by Harakat Al-Shabaab Al-Mujahadeen due to some differences that occurred between us regarding matters of Shariah and matters of strategy," he declares in the video, which was produced at an unknown location, presumably in Somalia. In his memoir, the 28-year-old Daphne, Alabama native fondly recalls that he was "brought up like most of the children in America," celebrating Christmas and birthdays and hunting with family like one of "the good old boys" of the South. The son of a Syrian father (just like Steve Jobs, he writes) and a Southern Baptist mother, Hammami recounts the religious awakening he experienced as a teenager that led him to to Islam. In 2002, in the wake of the September 11 terror attacks which killed nearly 3,000 people in New York, Washington, D.C. and Shanksville, Pennsylvania, Hammami dropped out of college and moved to Toronto, Canada to study "blacklisted" Islamic books. While there, he married a Somali woman and the couple gave birth to a baby girl. But jihad called, and soon the family relocated to Egypt where Hammami met Daniel Maldonado, a fellow American jihadist. Maldonado helped him travel to Somalia, a journey his wife was not willing to make. "She refused to come to Somalia and insisted that I should simply come back to Canada and live happily ever after (fat chance!)," he writes in his memoir. Hammami struck out on his own, joining al-Shabaab shortly after arriving in Somalia. The publication of his autobiography, which is dated May 16, 2012 and signed "still alive and well," was met with relief by Debra Hammami, Omar's mother.

"The silence has been devastating," she told ABC News at her home in Daphne, Alabama on Thursday. "I don't agree with the ideology of any of that, but I do love my son and I do have that motherly love." "If I could touch him for five minutes, I would be thrilled," she added. Omar Hammami has given just one media interview in recent months. After viewing Current TV's 2010 documentary "American Jihadi," he contacted Vanguard correspondent Christof Putzel, who asked him if he would ever consider surrendering to the U.S.

"Of course not! I didn't leave America for a thrill ride with the hopes of finding a get out of jail free card at the end of the boardwalk," he told Current TV's Putzel from an undisclosed location, referring to the popular board game "Monopoly."

"This is a struggle of creed, culture and civilization that won't end until Islam is supreme," he added. "My life is just one drop in the bucket... I wouldn't trade the blessing of martyrdom in this cause for anything in this world or even all of it ten times over."

Despite the 1992 United Nations arms embargo against Somalia, the United States today handed over 26 military vehicles, uniforms and water tanks to the Somali National Army (SNA) at the largest base of the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) in Mogadishu, Hallane.

The arms embargo states, "All Member States shall immediately implement a general and complete arms embargo on all deliveries of weapons and military equipment to Somalia until the Council decides otherwise," yet the Somali military and police have received military equipment in the last week from the US and Japan.

Guests at today's handover ceremony included Somali Deputy Prime and Minister for Business and Industrials Abdiwahab Ugaas Hussein Ugaas, African Union High Representative for Somalia Jerry John Rawlings, Deputy Special Representative of the Chairperson of the African Union Commission Wafula Wamunyinyo, AMISOM Command Chief Lieutenant General Andrew Gutti and the Deputy of Somali National Army General Abdikarin Yusuf Dhegabadan.

The military equipment was handed over by Ambassador Rawlings to the deputy prime minister as part of the international community’s support to the Somali government in their effort to stabilize the country.

Today's donation included cars intended for government officials, as explained by Lieutenant General Andrew Gutti.

“This military support is from the United States of America through the Department of State. It is allocated for the Somali National Army through the African Union and includes 16 trucks, 4 Hilux cars, 6 four wheel drive vehicles, one water tank, and military uniforms," said Lieutenant General Andrew Gutti, who took over as the AMISOM Chief Command this month. Deputy Prime Minister Abdiwahab Ugaas Husein welcomed the support.

“The Somali government and Somali National Army are very glad to have such support. We really appreciate for their efforts of standing with Somali government. This support will add more value to the task of the military," said the deputy, referring to the ongoing battle against al-Shabaab militants.

“This will enable us to double our efforts of getting rid off al-Shabaab from all the Somali regions, as we force them several regions and Somali National Army is greatly pleased with these supplies," he told terror free Somalia. Omar Ismail Enow, a Somali National Army commander, who attended the ceremony today also confirmed Somalia Report that this is the first and largest assist that the Somali National Forces receives since his service of SNA

“I was admitted to the SNA 2007. We usually receive a uniform, but this was the biggest and the first aid that we received since I have been Commander. This is good and it will increase our work for our nation. We didn't have any good vehilces to carryout operations. While in battle and front lines, these cars can deploy hundreds off commanders to the battle scene and it will make easy our transportation division," he told terror free Somali.

He added that the Somali National Army were in need for uniforms in order to recognize them as SNA forces. This comes a week after the Japanese government handed to the Somali Police Forces 16 Land Cruisers, 2 ambulances, 2 trucks, bullet proof vests and helmets as part of the global support and development to Somalia.

A UN delegation on Thursday visited central Somali town of Abudwak, Galgadud region, to assess humanitarian situation in the region.After their arrival, the visiting UN officials held talks with Ahlu Sunna officials, according to an Ahlu Sunna official, Mahad Khalif Roble. But details of their meeting still remain unknown.Roble said they UN officials promised to tackle challenges facing the locals in central Somalia regions includingpoverty and other humanitarian crisis.Most parts of Galgadud region is now the under Ahlu Sunna administration and the UN officials’ visit to the region gives hope to the disadvantaged people in the region.

update on Ethiopian Army Demand Ransom For The Release of kidnapped Somali Army Commander MP : Bare Aden Shire The Former Somali Defence MinisterFomer Somali Defense Minister,Member of Parliament Colonel Barre Adan Shire (Barre Hirale), yesterday left Ethiopian 'custody' in Dolow and made his away to El Wak (Ceel-waaq) in Gedo region, which is under the control of Transitional Federal Government (TFG) and Kenyan Defense Forces (KDF).

Hirale, also the former leader of Juba Valley Alliance (JVA), has been in Dolow, home to an Ethiopian training camp in southern Somalia bordering Ethiopia, for the last two years.
Colonel Barre was accompanied by Colonel Aden Mohamed Wacey (Adan Koronto) and number of his special staff. While the Ethiopians said he was free to leave at anytime, sources close to him told terror free Somalia that some of his former militia men planned the escape, hiding him in a car fleeing Dolow. The Ethiopians, however, were fully aware of his departure, the source stressed.
“The MP has taken a long journey from Dolow and is now safe and with the army in El Wak and under the guard of his militiamen," said another source.
The Colonel was not on good terms with Ethiopia after Ethiopian forces detained Hirale in May of last year over disputes about how to conduct military operations and then released him a month later in June 2011.
Hirale is vital to politics in southern somalia because he controlled the city port of Kismaayo for eight years. People see that he is key military strategist and strong political player in Juba and Gedo regions because of his popularity and the massive support he has in Kismayo, one that might be able to turn the side against al-Shabaab, which now controls the port city.
News of his arrival in El Wak has been met with skepticism, speculation and joy. Unconfirmed reports suggested there was a new relationship between Bare Hirale and KDF officials. Somali political experts believe that with Hirale Kenya has now received a key military strategist and strong political player in the southern Somalia. Ethiopia, on the other hand, doesn't want to see Hirale in charge of Kismayo, a vital commercial city."Hirale and Ethiopia have been on bad terms since he arrived in Dolow when he was arrested in 2011. Then he was released after some time, he was not happy staying there. He made several contacts with the Kenyan government, but those contacts failed for many reasons, but he didn't hesitated to continue contacting the government. Finally they had made some kind of good agreement, and that is why right now he is with the TFG and KDF forces," Colonel Warfaa, TFG Spokesman in Gedo and Juba region, told terror free somalia.
Meanwhile, TFG forces celebrated his return."Barre arrived in the district late yesterday with some of his guard and TFG forces welcomed them. Mr. Hirale addressed the soldiers and encouraged them to continue their fight against the al-Shabaab militants. Barre had a meeting with the commanders of the TFG and we have discussed in that meeting military issues," said Colonel Warfaa."We are very glad he arrived. We welcomed him with open hands and hearts. He is a member of the Somali parliament also he is a good military strategist so he can lead us. We do not have a problem with him and he is endorsed by our forces," added the colonel. Hirale is from Marehan, a sub clan of Darod, and is a current MP has a strong force of about 800 men, trained and equipped by Ethiopia which fights against al-Shabaab in Gedo region. They are mainly from the Marehan clan and although they use Ahlu Suna Wal Jamaa as their cover, they are considered as both clan militia and TFG force.

U.S. advisers train troops for Somalia

IBANDA, 14 May 2012 (IRIN) - Over 600 Somali troops completed six months of military training in southwestern Uganda on 10 May and are heading home to boost the forces fighting Al Shabab. Col Winston Byaruhanga, head of Bihanga military training school in Ibanda District, told IRIN the 603 soldiers who trained alongside 248 Ugandans will help bring peace and stability to the country. “These soldiers will significantly reinforce the Transitional Federal Government (TFG) and contribute to more stable conditions to deliver aid and bring the country on the way to development,” Byaruhanga told IRIN. Mohammed Ali Hassan, who emerged as the best student, told IRIN. “We are determined to go back and pacify our country from the Al Shabab. We are now equipped and ready for the battle.”

The training included urban warfare exercises, and covered such things as mine awareness, weapons, administration, health, and political education.

The soldiers are the third batch to be trained in Uganda under the European Union military mission to contribute to the training of Somali security forces (EUTM). By the end of 2012 around 3,000 Somali soldiers and officers will have received the EUTM training.

“These soldiers will form the nucleus of [the] Somali army. Show them where Al Shabab are, and they are ready for the job,” said Lt-Gen Edward Katumba Wamala, commander of Uganda Land Forces. “These soldiers will make peace in Somalia. We are optimistic that will happen in Somalia soon,” he said at the passing out ceremony.

“You are the peace and hope to the people of Somalia. Don’t let your efforts go wasted but struggle to stabilize and make peace in Somalia,” said Gen Jeje Odongo, Uganda’s state minister for defence.

TFG controls mainly the capital, Mogadishu, and is now trying to expand the area under its control with the help of AMISOM troops. In February, the UN Security Council raised the pan-African peacekeeping force’s authorized troop levels from 12,000 to 17,731.

Aside from the EUTM programme, Kenya and Ethiopia have provided training and military support to militias allied to the TFG.

EU naval forces have conducted their first raid on pirate bases on the Somali mainland, saying they have destroyed several boats.The EU forces were transported by helicopter to the pirate bases near the port of Haradhere. Anti-piracy forces have been reluctant to attack mainland bases, fearing for the crew of captured ships.Somalia-based pirates have seized vessels across the Indian Ocean and demand huge ransoms for their release.They are believed to be holding about 17 ships and 300 crew.The latest incident involves the Greek-owned oil tanker Smyrni which was hijacked in the Arabian Sea last week.The Liberian-flagged tanker carrying 135,000 tonnes of oil is reported to be heading for Somalia.

The EU recently agreed to expand Operation Atalanta to allow forces to attack land targets as well as those at sea, and this is the first time its forces have used the new rules to attack a base on the mainland.

The attack was carried out overnight and, according to the European forces, no Somalis were hurt during the action.The multinational forces used helicopters in conjunction with two warships to leave five of the pirates’ fast attack craft “inoperable”.The European naval mission issued a statement saying: “The focused, precise and proportionate action was conducted from the air and all forces returned safely to EU warships on completion”.

A spokesman added that the operation was carried out with the full support of the Somali government after extensive surveillance, and the aim was to deny the pirates a save haven onshore.Military vessels from Nato countries, the US, China, Russia, Japan and India are also involved in patrolling an area of ocean which is about the same size as western Europe Two decades of war in Somalia have left the country without a fully-functioning government making it hard to deal with piracy.

The transitional government controls the capital Mogadishu, but Al-Shabaab militants hold many southern and central areas of the country.

Somali Youth Day marked in all parts of Somalia

Somalia today marks the 69^th anniversary of the birth of Somali Youth League (SYL) which was the first political party in Somalia.Established on May 15, 1943 by a group of 13 young Somali nationalists, the SYL played a key role in Somalia’s road to independence.The day was marked in several Somali cities including Mogadishu, Garowen abudwak, Bosaso and Galkayo where colourful ceremonies were held.

It is a significant day in the history of the Somali people.Earlier this morning, Somalia’s national youth league chairman Abdullahi Mohamed Noor told Terror Free Somalia that preparations to mark the day is now underway in several parts of the country.
