Super Bad Experience Watching Movie at GSC 1 Utama

I'm not sure about you but from my past experience, I always had some of my movie going experience spoiled by bad projection or bad sound. So often than not it happens in GSC 1 Utama. Okay, having technical glitch is one thing but having the projection going way out and the audiences themselves have to notify the staff there to tell them there's a problem with the picture after waiting for 10 or 15 minutes means one thing. The projectionist must be doing something else rather than making sure that the movie is projected correctly or the sound is okay after he push the start button.

Take just now for example. I went to watch Viral Factor in GSC 1 Utama on 21st Jan 2012, 9pm at hall 11. I was quite excited to watch this movie that was shot mostly in Malaysia. When the film starts, the ratio of the picture doesn't match the screen at all. It's like it's using 4:3 rather than the 16:9 ratio. Then there's the sound having some distortion that is very irritating and the volume from dialogue and sound effect in the movie was damn low. We, the audiences had to endured this bad quality projection for about 15 minutes, until some of the audiences couldn't take it anymore and walked out to complain. Then only a few minutes later the picture ratio was corrected and a few more minutes later the sound was corrected.

What I don't understand was, why we the audience need to wait 10 to 15 minutes and go make a complain only then the technical glitch is taken care of? What is the projectionist doing? I hope he/she is not sleeping on the job.

Viral Factor is quite nice by the way but please watch it somewhere else if you don't want a bad experience like me. I also bought ticket for I Love Hong Kong 2012 for 12.30 am show at hall 6. Ratio and sound was okay but there's a big vertical line covering the top of the picture. I didn't wait for 10 minutes this time, after 1 or 2 minutes into the movie, I walked out and complained to the staff. They then tried to fixed it. They stopped the movie, do something, then played again but the vertical black line was still there. The frustrating thing is that the movie is continued to be played, so we all missed out portions of the story not to mention watching the movie with the black vertical line. After 15 minutes and it's still not fixed yet. I couldn't take it anymore. I walked out straight to the box office and asked for a refund. The box office staff asked why. I told him technical glitch and I missed like 10 minutes of the story. He gave me the RM12 I paid and I left 1 Utama.

This is what I get when I pay good money to support original film? Luckily I don't watch movie at GSC 1 Utama that often. TGV Kepong is still the best lol. Please, GSC Cinemas ask your projectionists not to sleep on the job. Thank you very much.

Cosplay Christmas Party at Euro House, Ipoh

Okay. As promised, I'll blog about the Cosplay Christmas Party at Euro House, Ipoh. Not gonna write too much though. Just picture and caption, caption and picture. =P

As early as about 3.30 pm, the staffs started to get ready by doing makeup for their characters. The makeup were done by the makeup artists from Superstar International Beauty School.

Gaara from Naruto Shippuden. He don't use the sand container here, instead he use the beer container.

When there's Sephiroth, there will of course be Cloud.

Popular character like Edward Elric from Full Metal Alchemist was there too.

Kaname Kuran and Zero Kiryu from Vampire Nights.

That night we got not 2 but 3 characters from Final Fantasy 7. Here's the gorgeous, Tifa.

Everyone's favourite of that night is 鼓佬 Hatsune Miku.

Can change look one in one night, don't play-play.

It was so much fun that night and all the people are so into their character.

I was a lot of fun celebrating Christmas there that night. I will surely go there again this year if they do Cosplay Party again =)

Last Christmas I drove myself to Ipoh. Alone. #foreveralonepart2 The reason is because Euro House will be having a cosplay theme Christmas night. The co-owner of Euro House is my long time friend.

I reached Ipoh at about 11 p.m. on Friday 23rd Dec 2011. Took me 2 and a half hour, not thanks to the congested PLUS -__- I went to Euro House straight to look for my friend. I was greeted by a tower of Kronenbourg 1664 Blanc. It taste so much better than when I drank it here. Something wrong with the batch then?

The next day. Christmas Eve. Again, we went to Euro House that night for the countdown. This time we drank not only Kronenbourg 1664 Blanc but also Erdinger Drunkel. It's another taste on it's own. Very malty and a nice aroma from the roasted malt.

If you want premium beer in Ipoh, Euro House is the place you'll want to be at. It's very cozy here. There's even a Xbox 360 Kinetic here for customers to play with. You can even loan an iPad2 from Euro House to keep you busy.

Ever play Fruit Ninja on a LCD TV and you don't even have to touch the screen.

If you are spending more than RM200, you can even book their karaoke room. Yes, there's a karaoke room here and there's no head count charge.

The food here is very good too. I bet in Ipoh, Euro House is one of the better place for Western food. I had their Rib Eye Steak for Christmas menu. Oh, man, it's better than the Ship.

The salmon sashimi is damn fresh. The chef buy a whole salmon and cut it up himself rather than but those that's already cut. One of my recommended must order dish here.

Everyone seems to know everyone in Ipoh. The staffs there are very friendly and dedicated.

I just met Fish that night lol.

On Christmas day, yeah, it's the Cosplay Theme Night. I had my dinner before 7pm because I knew will drink a lot of Kronebourg and Erdinger Drunkel. I ordered their Rib Eye Steak and the Duck Ragu Salad.

The smoked duck is very well marinated and tender. The feta cheese with lettuce dress in balsamic vinegar. Yums. Too bad it's only available on the Christmas menu. Hope the chef will put it in their next menu.

Words can describe how good the Rib Eye steak was. If it's not for the price, I would have thought I was eating Wagyu beef. Okay, maybe a little bit exaggerated but trust me it's damn tender the steak. Not to mention the portion is quite big too. Worth every penny.

Hennessy V.S.O.P Privilege Collection NYX Bottle Launch Party

The first party in 2012 was Hennessy V.S.O.P Privilege Collection NYX Launch Party. Registered myself at the Hennessy V.S.O.P Privilege Collection NYX Concept Space at East Atrium Entrance of Mid Valley Megamall. I was given three white Hennessy gloves, two for my invited guests. I was to wear it on my left hand and walk towards the Garden and I'll be shown to the secret location where the launch party will be held.

Once I reached The Gardens' entrance, I was greeted by Kate and she told me to turn left after the Coach shop.

Then another NyX girl waited for me at the end of the walkway and I was asked to take the lift to the 6th floor to..

Vertigo!

Where's the Party!

Yes. One of the biggest party I went last year. Where's the Party? Performers like Crossfire and Paperplane Pursuit, Dennis Lau , Shawn Lee, High on Heels, DJ Sophie Sugar and DJ Hiloco.

This time "Where's the Party" is held in non other than Carlsberg brewery itself. The place is transformed into a carnival. There are a lot of fun fair games that we can play to earn points. The points can later be used to exchange Carlsberg merchandise. If we win the game, we just have to use our RFID tag to tag the receiver at the game counter to earn the point.

Some games are just for fun and don't earn us point.

There are of course free food. The food stalls were setup in a street outside.

Too bad I only able to get 40 points. At 8 pm, the performance starts. I was still outside eating. Oh well, I've had enough of Dennis Lau and Shawn Lee for the past few days, so I'll give them a miss =P I like the performance by Crosfire and Paperplane Pursuit. High on Heels were great!

At the back, there were camps of foot massage, tattoo and fortune telling. The queue were so long there. I only managed to get my Bazi reading. Met some new friends there while waiting for the Fortune Telling. One of the new friend has the same surname as me. My surname is quite uncommon, so it's quite a surprise.

Free flow of beer all night long. At 1 am, free lok lok. 6 or 7 lok lok lorries came and by the time I go there, half were emptied.

After filling up my stomach with lok lok, I took the shuttle bus back to Shah Alam Stadium where I parked my car. Taxis were there waiting to take those that is too drunk to drive. Carlsberg promotes responsible drinking.

It's Been A Fabulous 4 Years!

Never had I known that blogging will this much fun and got me good things in terms of monetary value and non-monetary value. I've started blogging in this space "Simon Says" actively on 27th Dec 2007. It has just past four years for this humble blog of mine.

This year started off good with me chosen to be one of the Maxis10 Reviewers Programme to review Nokia E7 back in March. The best part is I get to keep the phone and I've been using it ever since. During the year, I met a lot more bloggers bringing up my Facebook friends to 1186 and my Twitter followers to 627. I also started Facebook Page for this blog, since many bloggers already started one =P Now go like my page.

I've also been invited to loads of parties and events, especially beer events. Of course there are some food review in between. I of course shifted to work in Cyber Jaya early of this year and then shifted back to work in Damansara Heights in a new company end of this year. Wow, talk about change. During these 4 years of blogging, I went to Nuffnang Asia Pacific Blog Awards 2009 and 2011 (I haven't blog about it yet "-_-). Both were great success and it meant a lot to the bloggers. Thank you Nuffnang.

As of the norm, on every blog anniversary I'll change my blog header and background colour. I'm not good in designing so I don't restructure my whole layout. This is the previous blog header.

Asahi Super "Dry" - Shift your Senses

I went to Double Tree again for another beer event.

This time is for a Japanese Premium beer. Asahi Super "Dry". The good news is that Carlsberg got the rights to brew the beer here in Malaysia in their brewery. So, we get the freshest Asahi Super "Dry" in ASEAN!

Asahi on a tap baby! Previously we can only get it in can and all the way from Japan. Now the beer only has to travel from Shah Alam. Fresh! The taste of it? Well, it's easy drinking without the bitterness and the after taste just a tiny bit of bitterness that one will be hard to notice.

It goes very well with tempura and calamari. So, if you are having Japanese food, try a glass of Asahi Super "Dry" draught and see the difference.

I was invited to a talk organized by Pfizer and the topic is a bit taboo among us Asians. It's about how to be sexually satisfied for a couple, hence the title, "He Says, She Says - Let's Talk About Ideal Sex".

"According to the Pfizer’s Ideal Sex Survey 2011, Asian couples agreed overwhelmingly that quality of erection hardness and the ability to maintain an erection are the most important criteria in achieving an ideal sexual experience.

For the uninitiated, there is actually a measurement standard for erection hardness – the Erection Hardness Scale (EHS).

Since erection hardness is a fundamental component of erectile function, the availability of a simple parameter to measure erection hardness may prove useful in diagnosing the presence and severity of ED. The EHS is used to measure erection hardness during sexual intercourse. Grade 4 is the optimal erection hardness and it gives greater sexual satisfaction for both patients and partners. Doctors do use this tool for monitoring treatment outcomes. "

Why some man cannot reach the optimum hardness? According to said Prof. Dr. Low Wah Yun, who is a professor of psychology at the Faculty of Medicine, University Malaya and with Prof. Dr. Ong Teng Aik, Associate Professor and Consultant Urologist with University Malaya Medical Centre, it is mostly because the man is not in good health rather than psychological factor. So, guys, if you can't get hard enough, it's time to consult the doctor because your "little brother" is telling you that you might have hypertension, high cholesterol, heart problem or any other lifestyle illness.

Besides the two profs, newly wed couple, Bangsar Babe and her hubby, Wei Jien were invited to gives their point of views from a normal couple side. What they emphasized is that communication between them is very important to find out what each other thinks is an ideal sex.

Also, guys, pre-mature ejaculation according to Dr. Ong is if one ejaculate in less than 30 seconds after penetration. He said, most men at most last about 5 minutes. So don't worry if you find yourself ejaculated after 4 or 5 minutes =P If you don't believe, then set your phone to a stop watch function and see how long you can last lol.

UFO 飞碟 Desserts and Drinks, SS2, Petaling Jaya

Taiwanese desserts, bubble teas and snacks seems to be making a come back recently to Malaysia especially with so many franchise mushrooming out of no where. Two weeks back I tagged along Henry for a food review at UFO 飞碟 Desserts and Drinks, SS2, Petaling Jaya after we had tasted some Gelato on stick. This review is organized by Jane and coordinated by Benjamin. Thank you guys!

Here at UFO, one can try out all three Taiwanese specialties. Soya Ice, fried snacks and bubble tea! One place to have them all. I started with soya ice series and Benjamin ordered some snacks for us all.

As the norm of Taiwanese concept store nowadays you can customize your dessert. Mix and match the sides, choose your level of sweetness and ice. I didn't notice that so my bowl of soya ice series is a bit too sweet for me.

While the ice series here is just okay only, the fried snacks are the hidden gem here. Fried till the right timing with the outside still crispy and tender soft inside. The batter is nicely seasoned too. Once you start, it's hard to stop.

Lots of choice to choose from.

Ended my feast with a cup of Sour Plum Tea. I still prefer Roasted Milk Tea.

If you want to try all three different Taiwanese sensation in one go, then UFO is your choice.

By the way, their ordering notifier is imported from Korea.

Malaysian Girls - How Ugly Can It Get?

No, it's not Malaysian Dreamgirls Season 3! Malaysian Girls is a local musical about a local beauty pageant and the stories behind it. With a cast of almost an all girl cast with 2 and a half men (you'll know what I meant if you watch the musical). Produced by Dato' Faridah Merican and directed and original concept by Joe Hasham. Both the co-founder of Malaysia's popular performance arts studio, The Actors Studio Malaysia and also The Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Centre (klpac). The last musical that I watched with them on the helm is Ismail the Last Day. OMG, that was three years ago.

Once again I've come to KLPAC to get in touch with my inner artistic self. Thanks to Richard for passing me the ticket because he can't make it. Of course have to thank Serge for organizing this for us bloggers.

I don't want to spoiled too much of the fun by going too detail into the story. Simply put it, the songs are quite good and some good singers there. Some of the scene are very funny with some quite original jokes that is quite related to our daily life. So, it's like laughing at our self.

Some of the bloggers there said that I look like one of the character in Malaysian Girl. Gucci Lim (Freddy Tan). He's one of the standout character in the musical. He got one solo part where he rap in Cantonese with a bit of profanity too.

Another likeable character is Miss Klang, Daphne Wong (Amanda Ang). At first I really thought that Cantonese is Amanda's mother tongue but when I met her after the musical only then I know she doesn't speak one bit of Cantonese. Good job there Amanda ;) But it will be more politically correct if she's Miss Ipoh instead because the staple dialect in Klang is Hokkien, not Cantonese. Just my humble opinion =P

Anrie Too as Miss Sungai Way, Lin Lin, one of the most promising contestant to win Malaysian Girls but she has a hidden secret. What is the secret? Go watch it and find out lah.

The lead male performer is Aanantha as Ray Sanjay who took over the Malaysian Girls pageant from his deceased brother that he had never talk to for many many years.

Serenity Billion is the partner and trainer of Malaysian Girls pageant. See her rivalry with Ray Sanjay at first and then... Tabitha Kong did a marvelous job in portraying Serenity. She balanced her singing and acting quite well.

The character that most of the audience like (IMHO) will be the bithcy Jasmin Hibiscus (Siti Farrah Abdullah). She's really into her character that even after the show, she's still talked like she's Jasmin Hibiscus. Or maybe that's just her true character =P Job well done there, Siti.

There are variety of songs sang in Malaysian Girls. Malay, English, Chinese and Indian. So 1 Malaysia man. In the end, what I got from the story is that, we should be proud of who we are and don't have to pretend to be someone else that is not our true self.

Stickhouse, Sunway Pyramid

Yo, yo, yo. Ice-cream in the house. Stickhouse that is. More precisely, Italian Hand crafted Gelato on a stick. Now that's a first. Usually the gelato I ate is scooped then put in a cup or a cone. Stickhouse Gelatos are made with 100% natural and genuine ingredients without the added falvouring, preservatives and colouring. Fresh fruit, milk and cream together with the "Stickhouse Bases" and the decorations, guarantee a healthy, full-bodied product with a persistent taste.

The tasting started already when I reached. I was 15 minutes late. Started with fruit sorbets, Grape, Pineapple and Blueberry? Can really taste the fruit and there's still pulps in the ice-cream.

My favourite is definitely the Hazelnut. You can opt to dip it in dark, milk or white chocolate and nuts of your choice. The chocolate gelato is very rich, I might advise not to dip it in chocolate or the chocolaty taste might be too overwhelming.

Watermelon is very refreshing, lemon is for those that like sourish thingy (once I took a bite, it reminds me of the sour candy back in those high school days).

There are many more flavours to choose from. The last whole stick that I ate is Green Tea. While it's not as rich in tea as I wish it to be, still a nice stick of ice-cream for a hot sunny day.

The ice-creams were freshly made daily.

Choose your dippings and toppings.

Pricing starting from RM 4.90 for a mini, RM 6.90 for classic and RM 8.90 for premium.

Add on dark, milk or white dippings and hazelnut, almond, pistachio toppings. RM 1 for half and RM 2 for full.

I thought we're going to eat the lamb shank like what we normally do, the whole thing. Turn out Masterchef has something up his sleeve. The sliced lamb meat soaked up the stock nicely and has a strong Guinness present to it. You'll love it if you like Guinness Foreign Extra Stout. Pair it with some smooth champ. Yums.

At first, I thought the Guinness cream will be sourish. How wrong I was, the cream tasted very mild and it enhanced the natural sea taste of the oyster instead of covering the oyster taste.

Good Food, Good Fun and Tiger Crystal

Last Thursday I went to a Tiger Crystal beer food pairing session at Italiannies.

Started with Clams in chili tomato puree kind of sauce. A bit of sourish with a tinge of spiciness. Down it with a bottle of Tiger Crystal. Ah......

Coming up. Pepperoni and Cheese Pizza. The cheese just melts in my mouth and the crust is thin, I like. Down it with a bottle of Tiger Crystal. Ahhhh.......

Next up. Sau-sa-geh with onion, chili and fried ikan bilis. One of Marcky's favourite of the night. Cool down the spiciness with a bottle of Tiger Crystal. Ahhhhhhhhh!!.......

Lamb rib cutlets were tender and charcoal grilled just nice. The mash potatoes is le creamy. Washed it all down the stomach with? Yes. Tiger Crystal beer of course. Ahhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!.....

Some spicy chick came up later. Mexican? Spanish? Italian? Who cares? It's one hell of a tender and spicy chicken. Did I just wrote spicy? What beer goes very well with spicy food? Tiger Crystal!!! Ahh...............................

What? We haven't finish yet? Seafood pasta. Fettuccine to be exact. Marcky favourite again minus the mussels lol.

Last but not least. Dessert. Some kind of bread. It's very nice too. We were able to almost finished two plates of this even after such a feast.

There are so much left. I tapaoed the chicken, Marcky chose the pasta and Ah Bok had the pizza but the waiter got the chicken and pizza mixed up. I ended up with the pizza (which can still be eaten after I left it for 4 days in the fridge) and Ah Bok took my chicken.

Today will be the first day that I'll be starting my new job in a new company. After four years plus of working in my previous company, it comes to me that it's time for a change because I couldn't see any more challenge in my previous role. Salary and benefits is better in this new company but it's not the main reason why I jumped ship. First, the new job role has more challenging task for me that I can ultilize more of my skills and experience in MS SQL Server and Windows Server platform. Second, I don't have to work night shift anymore, which will be a good thing on my health.

The funny thing is the office of this new company is just behind my old office before the office shifted to Cyberjaya. Yes, now I don't have to travel 100KM to and fro work. I don't have my own PC or laptop at home, all this while I was using company's laptop to post my blog. So, if you don't see any updates in this blog for a few days onward, it means either I haven't get a laptop from my new company or I will be using a desktop in the new company instead. If, it is the latter, then I might not be able to update this blog of mine for a month before I could buy a PC of my own =P

The downside of starting a new job in a new company is that I have to start from scratch again in terms of annual leaves and a 6 months probation period. I won't be able to take any annual leave during probation period. So, I might not be able to go to as many events as I like now. Oh well, I think it's a change for the better. Change is always better than not changing at all ;)

I've been attending a lot of beer events lately. Just last week I was at GAB's The Tavern for their launching for "The 9 Grand Treasures for the Year of the Dragon". I invited my date Jiayeen along with me because she haven't been to The Tavern before. After registering ourselves, we were given a very heavy goodies bag.

No wonder the goodies bag is heavy. Back in the days when The Store in Jalan Ipoh was called Gold Shopping Mall, my parents will always bring me and my sister to eat the prawn mee at the makeshift stall walking distance from the mall after doing our shopping. 顺利虾面 Soon Lee Prawn Mee has been doing business here for more than 15 years.

Last Friday while I was waiting for my car timing belt to be changed at a nearby workshop I went to have a bowl of their popular prawn mee. The nice aroma of the broth from prawn shells can be smelled even before I stepped into the zinc roof stall.

The stall seems to be the same like I remembered it 15 years ago except that the prawn mee used to sell for RM 3 to RM 3.50. Now it's selling at RM 5 to RM 5.50. Yes, inflation is the king.

For me, what makes a good bowl of prawn mee is the broth. There's no shortcut here. One taste of the soup I can know that it was cooked using a lot of prawn shells and pork bones. Second is of course the condiments like the kangkung, prawns, pork slices and last but not least, fried shallots. Missing any of it will not do for a good bowl of prawn noodle. I added sotong to my regular bowl and it cost me RM8.

I will say that this is one of the best prawn mee I tried so far outside of Penang. It can beat a regular prawn mee in Penang if not the famous one. On the kiosk, one can see that a lof of popular artists from Hong Kong will drop by for a bowl or two whenever they come to Malaysia. Be prepared to wait for a long time if you come by around dinner time because it will be packed!

Starbucks Card Grand Launch Party

Starbucks fans, most of you would have know by now that the Starbucks card is finally here in Malaysia. Last week I went to the launching of Starbucks Card at The Curve. During the launching day, Starbucks there will be giving out free Starbucks Card that was preloaded with RM10 stored value to the first 100 customers that queue up for the card. I heard the queue started around 4 p.m. and they only starts to give out the card at 7.30 p.m. when the launch party is launched :p

As for me, I don't have to queue up because I was invited as a blogger there. I got the preloaded Starbucks Card once I registered myself at the blogger registration counter :p At 7.30 p.m. sharp the party is launched and Starbucks cards were given out to the first 100 customers that queued up.

We were kept entertained with performances like dance, singing and fire show.

TIGER CELEBRATES THE 22nd RAJA MUDA INTERNATIONAL REGATTA IN STYLE

Last Thursday, I was invited to join a Tiger party celebrating all things sailing impending of the annual Raja Muda Selangor International Regatta. We were brought to the Royal Selangor Yatch Club in a coach from GAB Brewery for the party.

This is the 2nd time Tiger Beer sponsoring this annual sailing competition. This time around, Tiger also added a Tiger Challenge Trophy. What's special about Tiger Challenge Trophy is that, all IRC yachts regardless of their classes will compete for one distinctive trophy. The Tiger Challenge Trophy will be awarded to the IRC boat and skipper with the best offshore passage race performance, based on the lowest points score. The offshore passage races are run from throughout the Regatta passage; Port Klang to Pangkor, Pangkor to Penang and lastly, Penang to Langkawi, which is the last stop for the Regatta.

This is the first time I've been to yatch club. Of course besides food there's also loads of Tiger Beer and Tiger Beer Crystal available to us all. Nothing like a having bottle of Tiger Crystal while the breeze from the sea is slowly blowing on my face.

Also on hand for the second year running is the arresting sight of Captain Shane Granger, owner and master of the Historic Sailing Vessel VEGA, which was docked during the event just off-shore. The magnificent vessel and crew is to transport press and public relations personnel and VEGA will be present during all races. Built in 1892-93, for over 100 years VEGA carried cargos of bricks, building stone, pig iron, and cement through some of the world’s roughest seas. Rugged enough for the North Sea and certified for Arctic trade, VEGA was famous for her strength and ability to carry loads other boats her size could not.

Best of all, I get to go onboard Vega to have a tour of this 120 year old sailing vessel. The wood finishing is really of high quality. We get to go down into the cabin too. While it's not very big inside, all the things that needed is available like kitchen, bedroom, and washroom.

It's nice to hear the stories told by Captain Shane Granger. About how Vega sailed to an isolated island that don't even have the basic medical kits for maternity. So, Captain Shane will bring back the necessity on the next trip to the isolated island.

那些年，我們一起追的女孩 You Are The Apple Of My Eye

I watched 那些年，我們一起追的女孩 (You Are The Apple Of My Eye) on Wednesday. I thought it's already screening for a few weeks, then only I knew that the premiere date is on 10th November 2011. The screening I watched is a sneak preview session. The movie is based on the novel by the current popular author 九把刀 Giddens. The book which is actually based on the real life story of the author himself when he was in high school, college and then working life.

The film kind of reminds me of Ice Kacang Puppy Love by Ah Niu. The difference is that it's based on high school and college life in Taiwan and the jokes in the movie is kind of 18SX (like masturbating in the class) hence the rating for Malaysian screening is 18PL. Sorry for those of you that is not 18 and above yet.

The jokes are very original and funny and the way the director (Giddens) placed the camera is very captive. There are some scenes in the nature and street of Taiwan that just too beautiful to describe with words.

The acting of the casts doesn't seems like acting at all because they were so natural. Especially the lead actor and actress. 28 year old 陈妍希 Michelle Chen gave a very good performance of portraying 17 year old 沈佳宜 (the love interest of Giddens when he was in high school). She was nominated for the Best Leading Actress in 第48届金马奖 the 48th Taiwan Golden Horse Awards. Hope she wins, I love her performance in this movie. She's now very popular now after this movie broke Taiwan local blockbuster with a sales of NT$110 million and still going.

New comer 柯震东 Chen-Tung, Ko also did very well in his portrayal of the younger Giddens. He was nominated for Best New Performer in 第48届金马奖 the 48th Taiwan Golden Horse Awards.

Apparently the fans found the picture of the real 沈佳宜 . No wonder Giddens fell in love with her when they were young.

This movie is funny and touching. There's love, family and most important of all, friendship. It also makes me so absorb into the movie that I laugh and almost cried with the characters. There were also a few scenes the the audiences in the cinema clapped, one very rare thing to see in Malaysian cinema. Nice to know that Giddens was nominated for Best New Director and the movie theme song "那些年" was nominated for Best Original Film Song.

陈妍希成为新的宅男女神 Michelle Chen has now become the newest Otaku Goddess in Taiwan.

This movie is a must watch of fans of Giddens of course. Those that was born in the 70s and 80s. Can understand Mandarin. Even if you can't understand Mandarin, you can read the subtitle. Basically it's a movie that everyone will have a feeling for. So, if you are over 18 year old, then make your way to the cinema and watch it. Under 18, then wait for the DVD to comes out :P

Rating: 10/10

P.S. Remember to stay until the credits end for a secret scene. It's worth the wait.

P.P.S. I nearly teared when I saw "好在一起". T_T You'll know what I mean when you watch this movie.

onde onde, Waterfront Desa Park City

Back in July this year I went to onde onde in Waterfront Desa Park City to have their popular assam laksa. I bought a deal from I forgot which group buying site that give a special price for their assam laksa. Since DPC is just 5 minutes drive away from my place, it's quite obvious that I don't have to think twice about buying the deal.

onde onde is a little cozy self service restaurant. At the counter, I could see there are a few varieties of Nyoya kuih, which looks very appetizing. The recipe used here is based on the recipe from the owner, Paul Khong's mother Sally Teh whom hails from Mallacca. You can read more about their story here.

I also ordered their Nyoya otak-otak as a side, honestly a bowl of assam laksa is not enough for me. I liked the fact that their otak-otak is steamed instead of grilled because I think steaming retains the fish taste inside the otak-otak. Soft, creamy and full of fish and santan (coconut milk) flavour. A side that is worth a try if you come here.

The true gem came when I saw their assam laksa. It's so rich with flavour and ingredients. Their soup is thick that each scoop is filled with fish flakes, unlike some of the diluted soup found elsewhere. The balance of sourness and savouriness is just nice. A dash of prawn paste sauce in the laksa just made my day. I can say that this might be the one of best laksa found outside Penang or even wins some of the laksa in Penang. Highly recommended by me to try their assam laksa if every you drop by.

What I like about Waterfront Desa Park City is that after a nice warm meal in onde onde, I can go to have icy cold New Zealand Natural premium ice-cream a few shops away. ;)

Shabu-Shabu Buffet at Nagomi Japanese Restaurant, Menara Hap Seng

Last week I went to have shabu-shabu buffet at non other than Nagomi Japanese Restaurant that started as a shabu-shabu specialist restaurant, which is now a full fledged Japanese restaurant that also offers other Japanese food. Shabu-shabu buffet only available at Nagomi Menara Hap Seng.

There are over 80 choices of raw ingredients to choose from for your shabu-shabu goodness. Also, you can choose your soup base from the available ginger, taban miso, kimuchi or the default Nagomi soup base. There are also no shortages of sauce to choose. There are goma sauce (sesame sauce), ponzu (citrus vinegar), Thai chili sauce. There are also a few dressing for your salad such as wafu dressing, shoyu dressing and Nyoya dressing. I was spoiled for choice.

The first thing that attracted me on the buffet spread is the live lobsters. It's the lobsters are still alive ready to be cooked in the hot soup. Careful when you pick a few and put on the plate because they will crawl out of the plate.

There are many choices of greens available. I especially love the shitake mushroom.

It's not shabu-shabu without thinly sliced meat that is cooked with just a few swipe in the boiling hot soup. You can choose beef, lamb shoulder, chicken or duck meat. Duck is an acquired taste though, even though the gamey taste is not that strong but still some people can't stand it at all. All the meat there are very fresh.

While waiting for your raw stuff to be cooked, you can attack the sushi first, there are a few choices of sushi available.

Also available are deep fried fish and calamari.

A seafood lover? No problem because there are fresh seafood like scallop, mussels, clams, prawns and crabs available. The size is quite presentable too and not those small small one.

My cooked live lobster. It's very fresh I can guarantee that lol.

It's not wagyu beef but the cut is very nice for shabu-shabu.

Lamb shoulder goes very well with goma sauce.

What's the price of this shabu-shabu buffet? It's only RM 32.80++!! It's freaking value for money. What's more during bonus hour the chef will cut up a fresh salmon to make sashimi and it's only available for that 1 hour, so when you heard the bell rang, quickly go and grab your salmon sashimi.

For those that likes to drink beer, then it's your lucky day because 5 bottles of Carlsberg are only selling for RM30++.

Another thing to be happy about is that parking is only RM3 per entry after 6pm on weekdays and Sat, Sun & Public Holidays. We can enjoy our food slowly without having to worry about parking per hour rate.

Oktoberfest Party at The Tavern

Alright, it's my second time to The Tavern. For you noobs out there that don't know what's The Tavern, read this post. This time it's for Oktoberfest Party and I'll be celebrating with bloggers and winners for the Oktoberfest Malaysia contest run by GAB (Guinness Anchor Berhad). We got a few free flow of draught beers to choose from. Kilkenny, Tiger, Strongbow, Paulaner, Guinness and Heineken.

I have to say it once again that the beer here is as fresh as can be and taste better than the beer serve in the pubs outside. It's fresh because The Tavern is just next to the brewery itself. The only thing is The Tavern is not open to walk-in visitors, sorry.
