March 2019.

Record snowfall and the fasted snow melt are behind the devastating Nebraska floods.

With this, I decided to do a photoshoot with a few of my 2019 and 2020 high school senior influencers. This was a different photoshoot. This photoshoot told a story through their eyes and was featured on Society 12.

Megan and Mariah came to me all the way from Hastings High School in Hastings, NE!

These two 2019 seniors have an eye for fashion and actually have their own blog that they update often along with a very strong social media presents. They knew exactly what they wanted from their two hour senior session. Actually, their session felt more like a collaboration than a normal session that I am used too. We bounced ideas off of each other and talked through their session during their FaceTime consultation and also the day of their session.

They wanted very specific looks and loved a shot of mine that I had on Instagram using wood paneling. They planned their outfits not only around the wood paneling, but also knowing they wanted black and white shots plus a simple white wall in studio.

Then they had another outfit planned for the outdoor part of their session that we took on a bridge just outside of Wahoo. Though it was late in the fall season there still was just a pop of that fall color left on a couple trees by the bridge. Mainly, we just played and since the girls are in front of the camera showing off the latest fashion trend they were very easy to work with in this way!

Boudoir Sessions are for you as much as they are for Him

It's true.

As busy women we don't think about ourselves very often let alone take the time to be photographed.

Of course, we will be in family portraits, but we would never think about a session just about us. Boudoir shoots have always been marketed for men. Sure, it is us women in the photographs, but they are ultimately for our significant other. These sessions should be for you just as much for your partner. Before the shoot even begins, go shopping for the beautiful, sexy outfit that you want to wear. Maybe it is a graphic t-shirt of the movie you first saw together. Make a day of getting your hair and nails done. A month leading up to your session make sure you are taking care of your skin especially in the winter months. On the day of your session, be pampered by my professional makeup and hair artist while sipping on wine.

Then we can make the most beautiful photographs that you can surprise your lover with and you can cherish yourself.

Ashland-Greenwood Senior!

I think this year I had the most senior guys in front of my camera than any other year. For most, well let's face it, for pretty much all of my senior guys, they show up because mom said so. In this case, I photographed Hayden's big sister a couple years ago. I always love getting to see siblings in my studio and it was fun to have Riley come along.

Photographing senior guys is always a fun challenge and when I say that, I mean it. With girls, the sky is the limit on posing and locations as it is just more natural for a girl to lay in the grass or stand in a field of flowers. Boys, again, really just want the session to be over. Ha! Making sure you have a great location with many options for standing, sitting, leaning, etc is key. But, trying out cool things with sport shots and lighting can always help make the senior guy feel like he is going to look good and he will be more comfortable in front of the camera.

Hayden was actually very comfortable the day of his session. It might have helped that he had met me before and had been photographed by me during two family shoots prior. This is why I always want to meet my seniors prior to photographing them - even if it's over Skype. It just helps to get that first introduction out of the way and the day of your shoot, you feel like you already know me.

Facebook comes to Omaha!

Back in September I received an email through my website about head shot photography for an event. The information was a little vague and I wasn't sure if it was a paying gig, but I responded. I am pretty darn happy I did! After agreeing to do the two day event in Omaha and signing a contract I was told that the company that I would be working for was Facebook. Yup, you read that correct. I was contracted to photograph an event that Facebook put on at the beginning of October called Facebook Community on the UNO campus.

What did I do? I photographed about 160 people during the two day event! It was a little crazy and both days I had to shut the door of the room I was in to get a small break and to scarf down a sandwich that had been brought to me a few hours prior, but it was an absolute blast! The attendees were able to attend many different workshops about Facebook and how to work everything that it offers for small businesses. They could then come to me for a free profile head shot that included a USB Drive with their images. I spent about 5 minutes with each person. So there wasn't much room for error. I would photograph them and then upload their photos to my computer and do a very quick edit, give them their USB and send them on their way!

A few people I photographed were photographers as well. One fellow photographer asked me if I was nervous to give out unedited images. It was funny because I wasn't. I felt that my lighting was a flattering soft light and the quick retouching software each picture runs through really makes for a pretty great head shot. When I thought about the two days after they were said and done I was proud of what I had accomplished. Not every photographer could photograph all of those people back to back and be successful. The only issue I had was on the first day as Facebook really wanted me to shoot outdoors and use the environment. I was outdoors for about 1 hour before the rain came. So the rest of that day and also on day two I was indoors using a blank wall, window light and a softbox that I toted along.

Below are just a few humans I had the honor to meet and photograph for a brief moment. I wish I could have uploaded them all, but it is just a little too many for the blog!

Moral of the story...always return phone calls and emails as something pretty awesome could be waiting for you. :)

It's that time of year again - time to sign up my new class of high school senior models!

I cannot believe this will be my seventh class of models and some of my past models are now college grads - whoa do I feel a little old. :) A lot have asked through the years what is the benefit of being a senior model? Many of my models have told me though out the years that since I start photographing them their junior year when it comes time to their actual senior session they feel so comfortable with me that they are not nervous leading up to the day of their senior shoot. When I shoot seniors that are not models the first 15-20 minutes is getting them relaxed in front of the camera and with me. Another benefit is for the models to just have fun - let's not forget that not everything is about "what do I gain from this?" sometimes we can choose to do something just for the experience of it!

The rain couldn't stop this senior session!

Molly came from Omaha Nebraska for her senior session in Wahoo and the rain that decided to show during her session wasn't going to stop us!

This year has been unique with many of my high school seniors finding me while searching on Google. It has been so fun to meet many new seniors from outside of Wahoo. Molly is a senior at Omaha North - my first senior from this school. When I met her and her mom, Pam during her pre shoot consultation, I knew this session was going to be very laid back and fun. Molly brought many different clothing options which was awesome! I always tell seniors to bring four complete outfits that are their favorites and then also bring along two to four more options. Sometimes, I may see something that was an alternative outfit that I think would be super cool in a location I know or if I feel most of the outfits are looking very similar, I will help to choose a look that is different than the others. Variety, variety, variety!

Molly had expressed that she wanted some sort of flowers with one of her looks. I searched and found sunflowers growing in a ditch along side a gravel road just a little outside of Wahoo. Of course, now, the sunflowers are EVERYWHERE, but a month ago, we walked through weeds, hoping we wouldn't find any snakes to get to the patch of sunflowers. I always want to use a few different spots in one location, so after we got out of the weeds and back on the road, I photographed Molly right on the road before hopping back in the car.

In my eyes you can never go wrong with a little water and tall prairie grass in your senior pics. Molly's romper was the perfect look to be playing in the grass and I could pose her laying down, sitting and she could even climb down a few rocks to get to an awesome location at the lake.

If you have worked with me, you know I will use almost anything as a background or to incorporate what is surrounding us in a portrait. Buildings, sand, gas pumps are just a few things that we used during Molly's industrial look. When I saw her multi colored top, I knew exactly where I wanted to shoot her with it on - an awesome aqua tin building. I am asked how I find locations and I always answer...even when I'm not location scouting...I am location scouting. I look at everything in my little town differently now than I ever did growing up. "How can I use this in a senior portrait?" crosses my mind pretty much every day.

The area that the aqua wall was in there were many things we could use just by walking 10 steps in any direction. I had Molly change her top a few times without ever leaving this location - which gave her a lot more shooting time and proofs to choose from.

Did I mention rain? I sure did! When we got out of the car at our third location (aqua wall) it literally just started raining out of nowhere. Skies went dark and the the rain came down. We were very lucky that it passed by in about 5 minutes which always feels like much longer. Ashley told Molly to go sit in the car and we waited. Once it cleared, we got back to work!

Adding Ashley - professional makeup artist made Molly's session go smoothly and gave her what she wanted. If you noticed, Molly's hair was curly during the flowers and lake pics and the rest of her session she had straight hair. We took a small break between locations to come back to the studio and Ashley straightened Molly's hair to match the last looks.

Molly's session was one of the most diverse session I have done this year with the outfit choices to the location choices. Does this sometimes make it really hard to choose your faves...yeah it can. But I would rather you have so many choices that it's hard to choose rather than my seniors saying...I really wish I had more choices.

Ducks, Ponds and Sunsets

When you think of a high school senior pictures, sunsets and a pond may come to mind, but this is the first time I have had a duck appear in a session!

Ellissa knew she wanted her senior pics taken around her hometown of Ceresco, Nebraska. The biggest obstacle was narrowing down the locations! After her and her mom came in for her pre shoot consultation they took a little drive around the locations they had mentioned and we came up with a plan. Ellissa chose the perfect locations to fit her personality and her clothing choices for each. My personal favorite was a farm that belonged to a friend of theirs with awesome old buildings and barns. We were at this location at the perfect time for the sunset to pop through the trees and with Ellissa's beautiful red hair almost glowing, we couldn't have planned it any better!

Oh yeah, and I did mention a duck in the title, didn't I? Yep, at the first location, another family friends home, we had a little helper named Aflac. He stood watch as I photographed Ellissa. If you got a little too close to him, he would take side steps to get the distance that he was comfortable with. All of us fell in love with Aflac and well, we couldn't leave him out of the photo shoot!

Summer sessions are my all time favorite. You get those beautiful golden colors that you just can't get during the fall and spring. See what I talking about below...

A Senior Session on a Nebraska Farm

It doesn't matter if I have photographed a senior at the same location each session takes on it's own life and the ENERGY of that person which makes each session unique.

A few years ago, I was at this very farm photographing Aaron's big sister, Brittany. I was actually super excited to see her pony when we arrived! Aaron had one goal that evening...to get this session done quick! He didn't want a lot of fuss with outfit changes or driving to different locations. We walked the farm grounds and when I would see something I would give him direction in how I wanted him to pose. His session was only 1 hour and when I told him I could roam this farm for hours and not get bored I think he thought I was going to make him do that! Something that is super awesome about using a location that belongs to family is that it has a special meaning - this is his senior year and then look where he was for his senior pics!

When you can find a location that has multiple areas just steps away is a gold mine in my opinion. There isn't a bunch of time wasted in the car driving to and from different locations. You are getting more images and your stress level is down which makes for a more relaxed session. Now, if you can't find just one location that has everything that you want, adding another location is always easy, just choose locations that are fairly close.

Aaron included his girlfriend and also his new puppy in his senior pictures...which I heard his puppy is A LOT bigger now. Though, he wasn't super thrilled about his senior session, Aaron was a good sport and kept a smile on his face...unless I told him not too. :) Now, to get him into my studio for some modeling sessions...

A Nebraska Sunset Senior Session!

Amanda loves sunsets and she wanted one incorporated into her senior session back in June!

This summer has been brutally hot and the day of Amanda's senior session was probably the hottest and most humid that we have had. I bet you can't tell though! :) We started off in a abandon house on her families property in Raymond, Nebraska. If we had the time and there wasn't a gigantic bumble bee buzzing around, I could have spent more time photographing Amanda in that house. It was super cool and right up my artistic alley! I loved that it was something unique to Amanda as well - nobody else is going to have senior pics in this house, well except maybe her little siblings in a few years - I hope I'm the photographer!

Like a few of my seniors this year, Amanda and her mom scoped out locations for her session around her home. The next spot we stopped at was Branched Oak to use a dock which I am pretty sure we chose the most rickety old dock that is at that lake. "Please don't fall in" Ashley said to me as she walked off the dock after fixing Amanda's hair. Yeah, it was that bad. Amanda walked, twirled, stood and laid on the dock like a pro and those were her favorite pics when she came in for her ordering session.

Finally, the main event, the images that Amanda explained to me in detail at her consultation - the sunset pics! The small little park that we went to was PERFECT to catch the sunset and boy was it beautiful. I had been nervous leading up to her session date thinking, what if we have clouds? No clouds in sight and we just played! I think these were Amanda's biggest and most real smiles that she beamed from ear to ear. I showed her a few of the images from the back of my camera and she squealed in approval - I then squealed too as I always want to give my seniors what they have always dreamed their senior pics would look like.

Amanda's makeup and hair was done professionally by Ashley Gaa - Professional Makeup Artist. Ashley stays with us on location for any touch ups that are needed which is essential during Nebraska summer days!

A Nebraska Senior Session with Molly!

Molly is a 2019 senior at Bellevue East High School in Bellevue, Nebraska - just about 15 miles east of Omaha.

I first met Molly when her mom had me photograph her for a teen session a couple of years ago. This was an in studio session with hair and makeup provided - it's almost like a little taste of what a senior session will be like with me. After photographing her I was thrilled that she wanted to be a #katedecostesenior!

Molly had many ideas for her Nebraska session and since we would be using locations in Wahoo, I wanted her to tell me exactly what she was looking for. We collaborated on a Pinterest board so that I could see what she liked. For the most part, I am usually looking at locations - Molly chose mainly nature images which then I knew I wasn't going to take her to any downtown locations. She had also pinned some pics with smoke sticks and flower crowns, so I asked her if she wanted those incorporated in her session. She did. I let her mom know where to find the smoke sticks and I ordered her the flower crown at our local florist - Found & Flora. We talked in length about her clothing choices for her session when we had her consultation over FaceTime a month prior to her session. When she arrived the day of her session we went through her clothing one more time and showed Ashley - professional makeup artist her outfits so she knew what colors to use on Molly. Once Ashley had Molly camera ready, we headed to the first location.

As you will see in the pics below, Molly transformed from one look into the other flawlessly. This was possible due to the fact that we talk, emailed and pinned on Pinterest many times prior to her session. This also was super easy and not stressful for Molly as Ashley was there to help her with makeup changes - especially powdering her due to the July heat and to place the flower crown exactly where she wanted with a quick hair change up too.

As a photographer, my favorite thing is to see how my seniors feel during their session. My senior girls love having Ashley get them camera ready and keep them looking fresh with makeup touch ups and always making sure their hair is looking perfect. The second best part of my job is when my seniors come in to see their images for the first time - their reactions are priceless - Molly's was no exception!

It is hard to believe that I opened my studio 9 years ago after a career as a professional stage manager. Being a photographer was never on the radar as I grew up, went to college and started out my 20's. In my late 20's things started to shift and changing careers was probably one of the scariest things to do and on top of it...move back to my hometown of Wahoo, Nebraska from New York City. I do not think my years of studying and working in theatre has been wasted. I use the skills I learned to tell stories, work with lighting and how to direct my clients. I love photographing many genres, but I would say my top favorite is high school seniors. There is just something about this time in their lives that I love to capture. For me with any shoot, communication is key and with high school senior sessions there is A LOT of communication that you just might get sick of me! Here are a few things to know when you book a session with me:

START PLANNING OUTFITS AS SOON AS YOU BOOK - this means to start looking on Pinterest and in your own closet. Pull clothing pieces and hang on the door as optional outfits. I will help you with outfit choices and will even collaborate with you on Pinterest boards to see what you are drawn too. I have a lot of boards for inspiration on my Pinterest - Check it out HERE!
CONSULTATION & IN PERSON ORDERING: A few weeks prior to your session, we will get together and talk through questions and get a game plan for the day of your session. About 2 weeks after your session, I will invite you to the studio for your viewing/ordering session. This when you will see your senior pics for the first time and orders will be placed...I told you, you might get sick of me. :)
BRING SNACKS & WATER TO YOUR SESSION - Most of my seniors choose a 2 or 3 hour session and nobody wants an hangry teenager!
MAKEUP ARTIST FOR THE WIN - Adding on a makeup artist for senior girl sessions is probably one of the most important decisions (other than your photog:)) that you can make. She will not only get you camera ready, she will be with us the entire length of your session to keep you looking fresh. Getting pampered right before senior pics...YES PLEASE!
DIGITAL FILES: Yes I offer them with a limited printing release. If you have more questions on how you can purchase digital files - ask!

Fashion in Senior Pics!

As senior picture season starts to creep up on us I wanted to share a few tips on clothing and accessories!

The first thing to know: the photos are about you, not your clothing. But, when you feel good in the outfit you are wearing, you are going to show it in your pics! Choose clothing that fits your body. Baggy clothing can add what appears to be extra weight and also will just not lay flattering on you. On the other hand, clothing that is too small and too tight is also something to avoid. Not only will you be uncomfortable, you may not be able to sit or even move the way you want in your photographs. Start shopping 3-4 weeks prior to your shoot so you have enough time to prep. While thinking about what you are wearing, don't forget the accessories! Earrings, necklaces, bangles, rings and even hats can pull a look together and make you pop. These are your senior pictures, the one time you can really show off your personal style, so go for it!

Kaitlyn | Nodaway High School

Kaitlyn was looking for something different. Something that the other kids in her school and town were not doing for their senior pictures. She did a little research and found me on Facebook. I always wonder if social media works outside of your regular followers and well, I was proven that it does!

Kaitlyn's requests were country roads, bridges and water. What is awesome about our little community is that we can hit all of those things plus throw in a ball field for softball pics just within a few miles.

We were up against strong winds that day, but at least the rain stayed away. Working with clients traveling hours to get to Wahoo, you don't want to waste their time. Having a professional makeup artist on set helped to keep Kaitlyn looking fresh through out her entire session. Plus both Ashley and Kaitlyn's mom had to hold up my pop up changing room as a wind blocker for a few shots!

Trinity | Minden High School

Trinity is a softball loving senior from Minden High School. Her and her mom came to Wahoo this summer for her portrait session during the middle of mosquito feeding time even though you wouldn't know that by looking at Trinity's images.

Conner | Lincoln Southwest High School

I was thrilled to be the photographer that Angie (Conner's mom) chose for his senior session! This Lincoln Southwest senior came to Wahoo and was all smiles for his two hour session. I can't wait to get his graduation announcements designed this spring!

Conner brought along his two younger brothers to join in for a few photos too. Senior sessions are a perfect time to get a couple updated photos of everybody. These images only took about 10 minutes and the boys liked the sound of that!

This session was all shot on location in Wahoo, Nebraska.

Makenna | Bishop Neumann

Makenna knew that she wanted senior pictures with her dad's purple truck. Her dad was happy he came along to her consultation so he new well in advance. I loved the idea as this has been a project that they have been working on for quite sometime and it means a lot to the family.

Makenna also knew she wanted a rustic urban look along with nature and water. Sometimes you do not think that you can find everything you are looking for in our little town, but if you just look around there are all sorts of nooks and crannies.

We ended the session at Lake Wanahoo and when mom says it's ok to get fully wet in the water, you go for it and the results are beautiful and unique pictures. Maybe they are not "senior pictures" but they are something that Makenna and her family can look back on as they skim the pages of her album. I'm just glad Makenna lives in Wahoo, so it wasn't too far of a drive in wet clothing!

Kelsey knew exactly where she wanted her senior photos taken and it is a location I rarely shoot at, so it was a fun adventure for all involved. We spent about an hour and a half in about a two block radius finding all sorts of perfect little spots to shoot in, by and on.

Kelsey is a natural in front of the camera and her spunky personality will come out when you least expect it which is such a joy to be around and capture.

During her senior ordering session, her mom and her chose to have her wall art to be printed as a 16x20 on bamboo which turned out beautifully. I will have to have Kelsey send me a photo once it is on their wall!

Sydney chose my one hour senior session and we shot it on a June morning. I think the morning light was just beautiful and gave her session a softness that Sydney also has.

The hot pink jumper was the perfect color contrast with the flowers that we found growing at my cousin's home (who I am lucky that they do not mind me rolling up at anytime to use their yard) and then changing into the pastel colors for her looks at her family farm.

Many people ask me if a 1 hour or even a 2 hour session is enough time to get everything they want. As you can see, we can get a lot accomplished in 1 hour! :)
