Grandma Bussey's Cranberry Salad

1 cup cranberries 2 oranges, 3-4 apples, 2-3 stalks celery

Wash all, core apples, peel oranges, trim celery ends.

Use food chopper to chop all fruits in small pieces.

You will also need one can of crushed pineapple.

Place 2 pkg. of Raspberry jello in a bowl.

Add two cups HOT water and mix well - till jello is dissolved.

Add one cup cold water. Using an Italian glass measuring cup is optional but does make the whole process much more enjoyable and photo worthy. Find yours here.

You also need 3/4 cup of sugar. I used my new china 1 cup measure and just didn't fill it all the way to the top.

Add the chopped fruits, pineapple and sugar to the jello mixture.

Stir. Stir some more.

Pour into a beautiful bowl. Photograph it with your Italian Glass Measure just because.

Cover Cranberry Salad, place in refrigerator overnight to set. Mine always sets up!

Serve with a traditional Thanksgiving meal - you know, turkey, dressing, potatoes, gravy...

To me a turkey dinner is not complete without Grandma Bussey's Cranberry Salad. YUM.

These cats began their life as all cats do - as adorable, cuddly kittens.

They originated here. With three girls I really had no choice but to bring all three kittens home!

They grew quickly. And became big, sleek, pampered, beautiful cats.

Very much loved by The Sisters

The girls very much loved their kitties turned cats. And sometimes loving involves saying good-bye.

And it hurts. We lost Sophie yesterday. One of the great risks of having cats in town - the road is just too close and too busy. You can't really tell in these photos but Sophie was long-haired and very fluffy. A very beautiful cat. She was the favorite. She had a purple collar The Teenager had bought her and she wore it proudly. Yesterday afternoon a very sweet neighbor lady brought the collar over and asked if the cat had been ours. She said it was hit on the road and she couldn't stand to see it out there so she got it and buried it in her flower bed. She even said a prayer over it. Then she washed the collar and brought it back. What a blessing to have such a sensitive and kind neighbor. It was rather sad here for awhile after she left. Tears were shed. A little collection of 'Sophie things' was made, put in a tiny box, and her collar wrapped around the box.

And though I'm not an animal lover myself I love my girls. And they loved that cat. And they were hurting over her loss. Therefore I hurt for them. Yes, sometimes loving hurts.

Till He Come

Lately my days are filled with just getting done what HAS to be done.

Inspiration and Creativity have departed for warmer climes.

I so wish I could have gone with them.

Jesus told a parable in Luke 19 about a man giving talents to his servants and telling them to 'occupy till I come'. Occupy did not mean to sit back idly as the one servant did. It meant to work, stay busy, do the ordinary life things, make increase, etc. Just till he came back.

He didn't tell them how long he would be gone. Neither did Jesus tell us how long till He returns.

But the parable applies. Occupy 'Till He Come'. Go about daily life. Even if it means just getting done the things that are absolutely necessary and nothing extra. Brighter days will come.

We heard a quote recently at church: 'If all you do in this life is praise God then you have done what you were intended to do'. So if I can just praise God even in the midst of winter I am doing all that is required. (along with cooking, laundry, school... just keep praising Him along with all the things that are needful)

Till He Come. This too shall pass! He is coming again and heaven will be our reality! That is reason enough to praise Him!

Natural Decor

Adorable little drawer pulls out. Now what should I put in it?

Would you display it open or closed?

What would you do with it if it were yours?

Taking the drawer clear out you could stand it on end and fill use it as a vase.

That was the suggestion of the shopowner.

Anyway, it adds some texture to my lacking-for-inspiration decor at the moment.

{New Fabrics}

I recently ordered a stack of fabric samples from fabric.com for an upcoming project.

And while I was at it I added a few pieces of fabric to do some creating with.

Anna Maria Horner velveteen.

Very soft. Middle Sister wants a blanket out of this.

I was thinking I'd make me a skirt.

Which would you recommend??

And since it was on sale I also got this piece of laminated fabric.

They all got added to my stack. Which looks like fun but I have yet to find the energy to get at it.

Spring is coming...

68 Days

Today it is warm. Compared to what it has been it is warm. The sun peeks through the clouds now and then. And though a watery sun, still it's the sun! It rained last night. Poured is more accurate. Complete with lightening and thunder. And this morning the snow is as good as gone. By aiming your gaze high or squinting you can completely ignore the fact that there are a few traces left here and there. And I am glad. Even knowing that we have 68 more days till April and we could well have more snow, ice, cold, and knife-like wind.

Still. IT'S ONLY 68 DAYS TILL APRIL!!!

~New Stuff~

OK I caved lately and got sucked in by the 'sales'. Yes, they were good sales, but still not free, so I was still spending money, which I am supposed to be saving not spending. But it WAS a good deal, and I can blame it all on my friend, Kara, who not only blogged about the deals, but also sent me an email telling me I needed to get myself over to BHLDN. And like an obedient friend I listened to her:) I CAN listen to what I'm told!

First up was this 7 1/2 yard roll of linen, scissors included .

Cannot wait to make some pillows or table runners or SOMETHING out of this!

For now it just looks pretty sitting on my shelf in my sewing room.

Isn't this the cutest box? This is one box I will be keeping. Too fun!

Can you guess what came in it?? (no it wasn't butter)

Shoes. I'm a sucker for cute shoes. Especially if they have leather lining and soles. AND they are on sale. These fit every one of those categories. I did not deliberate for long. In the cart they went. And there they stayed through the whole check-out process. Which, I might add, I completed as quickly as possible because I was afraid something might sell out before I got mine bought!

I have an outfit all planned around these things. Now if the snow will only go away I could wear it!

With snow, you will not find me out in anything but boots.

Candles. Long, thin tapers. Grey. Dripless. What's not too love?

A whole dozen. For $9. You would have bought them too.

Paper medallion fans. Way too cute and cheap to leave there. I did refrain from getting all the colors of these they had available and some other really, really cute and fun paper items. After all I already had the linen and the shoes in my cart. It was either those two things or get rid of those and buy all paper stuff. And since the shoes refused to get out of the cart and the linen is rather a business purchase the paper goods had to wait. Maybe next time they have an awesome sale, offer and extra 40% off AND a friend tells me to get over there!

Some Winter Decor

~Little Girls and Lollipops~

When given a HUGE lollipop, you find you cannot eat it all in one sitting. (or standing, whichever the case may be)

So you must find a safe place to put your lollipop to await the next time you want a lick. (or bite)

If your Mom has a coffee table that has some wiggle room between the boards that make up the top and the metal that makes up the frame you find that it is the perfect spot to place the stick to your lollipop! Just push it in and leave it there. Instant new decor along with a lollipop storage spot. Seems like a win-win situation! That is, of course, if your Mom WANTS her living room decor to include lollipops!

And really it adds a pop of color right? So why would any Mom object?

(They have been there for 6 days now. Maybe they will soon decide to eat them?)

French Toast

On Saturday mornings my husband likes to have a big breakfast. He doesn't always get it (most times not in fact) but he does enjoy a big breakfast. Everyone likes pancakes around here but most times I am just too lazy to make them. A quicker, easier route is French Toast!

Put eggs and a small amount of milk (cream if you have it!) in a pie plate.

Or if you are really lazy just grab a dinner plate and make that work.

Dip slices of bread in egg/milk(cream) mixture.

Place dipped bread in a HOT (300 to 350 degree) skillet.

You should put about a Tablespoon or 2 of oil in the skillet first.

If you don't your French Toast will be extra toasty.

Flip over just like pancakes when the first side is done.

When the French Toast is nicely browned on both sides remove from skillet.

Top with powder sugar. Or cinnamon and sugar. Or syrup.

Or powdered sugar AND cinnamon &sugar.

Or ALL THREE:) That's what Little Sister did:)

After the French Toast is all made there is usually a little bit of the egg/milk(cream) mixture left.

Put it in the skillet. Turn. Remove from skillet to plate. Salt. Eat. Close eyes and sigh at the yumminess. ( this is NOT the same as scrambled eggs)

These are the Best Years of Our Lives

I remember hearing my Mom say that the best years were when the kids were old enough to all take care of themselves but not old enough to be gone all the time yet with their own plans.

I guess that would be between 5 and 14 or 15. So. That's where we are. And yes, I'd have to say these are some pretty good years. And I know they won't last long. This year at Christmastime, the kids pretty much played, ate, and slept all together without fussing! We didn't see much of them - except when they came tearing through playing pirates, or ninjas, or cowboys, or...

The Teenager is old enough to stay with the others if we need her to, and not old enough yet to have her own plans that take her away from us. Little Sister is 6 and doesn't need a lot of care anymore (which can be sad if you dwell on it!)

Anyway, I'm in agreement - these are the best years of our lives - for now anyway!!!!

{Coffee}

I have come to love my morning coffee. Especially when I drink it in this wonderful new mug my brother gave me for Christmas:) The mug is Cath Kidston. And I highly recommend her line of products.

Click the link and check them out. But beware! You will want to buy something! Probably more than one something. But if you do cave and purchase something you won't be sorry about it:) It is quality stuff. And they are not paying me to say that either. They don't even know my blog exists!

I used to put this in my coffee every morning. It is yummy. But then I discovered that it is not cream. No dairy whatsoever. It is oil. Insert facemaking. Yuck. I was putting flavored oil in my coffee?? Not only that but my girls were using it too and they used more 'cream' than coffee!

So I started using real cream and sugar. Because it's what I had on hand when my 'Italian Sweet Cream' was gone. (yes I used up the bottle I had)

When the heavy cream got all I started buying 1/2 and 1/2. It's cheaper and really almost tastes better in coffee! Of course I would never turn down heavy cream:)

Then one day I tried this. Pure Maple Syrup. Viola!! Deliciousness! I don't care for Maple Syrup as the main sweetener in most things. If you want dessert it needs real sugar:) But for coffee I like the maple syrup better than sugar. It tastes better and it takes way less to sweeten it. Plus it's supposed to be better for you than all that processed sugar. But I'm not here to argue about using or not using sugar. I use it. It makes things taste good:)

And when I was searching for all these pics I put in this post I ran across this. Supposedly it has only 4 ingredients in it and they are as follows: nonfat milk, heavy cream, sugar and natural flavor.

I may just have to give this a try:)

(I wrote this on the first day of the year. Just didn't get around to typing it into a post till now)

I am sitting here in my warm, cozy living room with my coffee. it is the first day of the New Year, 2012. What used to be the distant future that we thought surely could never come. But here we are. Blessed. Joyful. Healthy. Thankful.

We have just spent a week and a few days with family whom we only see a few times a year. My brother, and my sister and her family. The almost 900 miles between here and where they live makes it that much sweeter when we are together. It's a long trip. 15+ hours with kids. They hadn't been here since last Christmas and we were only out there for 6 days this past July.

(all of the kids during their Christmas pageant and Grandma's. Don't you love where the quilt landed when they uncovered the 'multitude of angels'?!)

We were all very ready to see each other again. my sister has a daughter a year younger than 'The Teenager' and a son 6months older than 'Middle Sister'. Middle Sister and Little sister stayed all night at Grandma's house on Monday night after the cousins arrived and didn't come home till Saturday afternoon!! So fun that they could spend all the time possible with them:)

Tons of fun was had by all!

My 'little' brother is a highlight for all my girls. They love Uncle J.! We were sad when he moved 900 miles away to the same area my sister moved to when she got married. But we are happy for him because he loves it there. And we are thankful it IS the same place our other family is so we only have to travel one place to see them all!
We get pretty used to having him around again really quick and it was sad to see him go again. But hopefully we will travel west this year and see them all again. As you can most likely tell from the photo above this family is a Colts fan family! That would be thanks to Uncle J.!!

~Not Fair~

Sometimes life hurts. Sometimes it isn't fair. Sometimes it's just really really bad. Things happen that we don't like. We have to deal with things we'd rather not deal with. We have trials. We have pain.

Sometimes we just WANT TO SCREAM AT THE UNFAIRNESS OF IT ALL!

And still. GOD IS FAITHFUL. Even when it hurts. Even when the tears run freely. Even when it feels like nothing will ever be right again. Even when we face losing someone or something we love.

God is still on His throne. He still has a plan. He knew these things would happen before we were even born. And His plan will bring good, not evil.

So take heart. Hurts mend. Pain lessens. Sunshine returns. Spring comes. Faithfulness remains.

{CARAMELS}

I shared earlier how I received some caramels here

And how after searching the web I came up with NOTHING on where they came from.

So I emailed the friend who sent them to me and she gave me the name of the 'candy maker'.

I contacted the 'candy maker' and she was willing to sell me some caramels!

YAY! I ordered 2 pounds.

One pound I had delivered before Christmas to share with my

Mom and Dad and all our family.

The other pound (the one in these photos) is sitting in my house RIGHT NOW.

Unopened. Can you believe it? They are to go with us tomorrow for

our Christmas with my husbands family.

I've been so tempted to open them and sneak one.

But I KNOW that if I get started there will be none left to take

tomorrow. So I'm leaving the bag all packaged like it arrived.

Isn't the packaging cute?

I will be blogging about this again when she gets set up to sell online.

Getting myself back

To those of you who have things here on my to-do pile:

(no this isn't really my to-do pile but it was the quickest pic I could snap of a fabric pile!)

I AM starting to feel like getting back at it. I always think I will get back at it right after the holidays end. And it ALWAYS takes me a couple weeks to even start thinking about it!

You see, I suffer from SAD. or here.

It is a real disorder and not something made up. Check it out for yourself if you don't believe me!

It is sort of like baby blues - at least the ones I had. If you experienced baby blues you can understand in a way what I deal with every January. If you never experienced baby blues or any other form of feeling down - PRAISE GOD!

The baby blues hit me hard with the Teenager. I had no idea it was coming and had no idea how long it would last. Thankfully it ran it's course in two weeks. With Middle Sister and Little Sister I knew it would probably happen and I knew what to expect, and that it would most likely be over in 2 weeks.

I am realizing (finally) that I will deal with this every year after the holidays. I can handle winter till then. After the holidays end it hits me - no matter how sunny and no matter how temperate the winter clime.

Recognising this I must strive to plan accordingly. No deadlines in January. No planning on sewing till at least 2 weeks after my Sister goes home after Christmas (that's when the holidays end for me)

As of last night I felt the first stirrings of ambition and eagerness to 'get back at it'. I've been functioning but only doing what HAD to be done and what I felt like doing. A lot of sitting on the couch. A lot of playing with my new laptop. A lot of rethinking my blog -more on that to come as it unfolds. And a lot of school. Starting promptly at 8:30. Teaching Little Sister to read. Struggling to get The Teenager through math. So I'm not just curled up in bed with the covers over my head(though that can be what I really want to do).

Hurrah for the two week point! I'll have my down days in the next 3 months - I always do. It's all part of SAD. The best thing I could do for it would be to go to a warmer climate for at least a couple weeks during the winter.

So now you know there is a real disorder behind my dislike of Winter.

It's real. And I have to deal with it every year. On an up note it is only 79 days till April!!!!!

My creativity is starting to come back - sporadic as it may be this time of year.

Along with it is Ambition. GOD IS GOOD!

Sanctuary Decor

So I know Christmas is over and it's high time to move on! I for one am way past Christmas and thinking about Valentines. And Easter.

But I never got the pics of our church sanctuary posted so here they are. Bear with me for one last Christmas post:)

Poinsettias in the most beautiful shade of pink. I like them so much better than the traditional red.

There are double doors here and they both had a wreath. I somehow managed to not take a picture of both of the doors when they were shut. Maybe because they are rarely shut?!

Of Handbags and Calendars

My new Cath Kidston bag I got for Christmas. This is the first bag I've had for years that I have not made myself. Kind of fun to have one someone else made:)

This heavy duck cloth is coated with a heavy layer of lamination. How I would love to get my hands on some of this type of fabric. If you know of a source PLEASE let me know.

I love the laminated fabric I have but it is all soft and won't stand on it's own like this does. And while that is wonderful for a lot of things and very fun to use I'd like to find this too.

A seamstress can never have too many fabric options:)

My 2012 calendar. By Greg Johnson and Jean Lowe. I've used this calendar before in 2009 and 2010. Then when I was searching for one for 2011 there were none to be found:( I was so sad and I searched and searched. Finally discovered that they had issues with their printer and it wasn't going to happen for 2011. But they promised they were working on one for 2012. So I used a different book calendar. It was not pretty and I very much disliked it all year long. And I was always misplacing it! This one is so pretty it can lay on your table and not look like you need to be tidying up!

About September or October every year I start needing a calendar for the next year. It's where I keep track of stuff so I don't have to keep papers with schedules and appointments laying around. So last fall I started looking for this calendar. Couldn't find it. Nothing was out there about these calendars. Nothing. So I sadly ordered another one that was at least cute but it was way smaller than this one.

Then around the end of November I got an email from a friend with a link to Curious Sofa's listing of this very calendar! You better believe I had one (actually 2! my sis got one for Christmas) in my cart and was checking out so fast you couldn't see my fingers they were flying so fast on the keyboard!

I am so happy to have my favorite calendar again this year. And I sincerely hope they don't have publishing issues again. My life runs so much more smoothly with this thing:)

What do you use for a calendar? Book? Wall? Computer? Is it pretty AND functional or do you go for the just functional? And would you like to try one of these? I'm thinking it would be a great giveaway for my blog to do for Christmas this year! If I remember I will order an extra for 2013 when the time arrives and do just that:)

Photo editing and re-editing

I am still trying to figure out photo editing:) I have some blogs I follow that have the most wonderful photos on them. Great photos is the main reason I look at magazines. So I want mine to be great photos too. Because I want you all to enjoy looking at my blog! A better camera is a must I know. (it IS coming soon, I promise!)

When shopping with the WHOLE family...

Packing it up

I pretty much took all week to get my Christmas decor all put away.

The first thing I did was to take it all down and pile it on the dining room table.

I think that was on Monday.

I thought it looked rather pretty and fun seeing it all piled together before I started tucking and wrapping it all into it's boxes.

Lots of glitter. Lots of white. Lots of color. Just LOTS of everything! I love Christmas decor!

My Sister, My Friend

God placed us in the same family, gave us the same genetics - but with our own special little quirks that make us unique. God blessed us with parents who love each other and love us too! Because we are sisters we will always be friends. No matter how far apart we may travel in this world we have a tie that will always bring us back together - we are family. We spend these childhood years, carefree.

Enjoying life, making memories, growing, learning, laughing, sometimes crying, loving.

Our hearts are weaving together into a lasting, lifelong bond. There is nothing in the world quite like a sister. Just ask our Mom. She has a sister too!

(Brothers are pretty cool too. Mom says so, and she should know she has one of those too! But God chose to make us a family of Sisters! And we like it that way. It works for us.)
