JINDABAD: PLASTIC HEART

Few of us imagined that five young aspiring musicians, who, while hanging out sipping one chiya after another, could come up with an album so unexpected, so precise, and so mature. That is not to say that it is not full of youthful exuberance, but you'd have to pinch yourself to believe that they're still in their early days.
Nevertheless, the release of Jindabaad's debut album Plastic Heart is a proud and monumental moment, for what they have achieved with limited resources during Nepal's half-lit days is truly exceptional.
Plastic Heart starts loudly with 'Shades of You', a ballad driven by Kiran Shahi's tight drumming. With Sunny Tuladhar's slick guitar overlays and Rajan Shrestha on the howling bass, it transitions into a progressive final third before Rohit Shakya's umpteenth vocal octave wraps it to a distinguished close.
Second comes 'Preset', where Abhishek Bhadra's haunted undertones on the keyboard are complimented by the utopian numbness of the chorus. It is, in fact, poetry in motion, and taken to new heights due to Bhadra's proficiency on the keys.

'Rewind' reminds listeners that as musicians, music is theirs to create – labels mean nothing. They released this song on YouTube a few months back, which earned them a legion of fans then unfamiliar with the band's humble beginnings.

BFM' is a politically voiced number, by a band that continues to claim that self-entitlement has little to do with their music. The angry, at times almost 'Zack De La Rocha'-sounding, Shakya helps trigger the frustration of living in a disorderly state with the false autonomy we have created. Bhadra and Sunny, through the mastery of their instruments, heighten the enraged call for an egalitarian society.

PLASTIC HEART JINDABAD

The album finally ends in 'Spoilin'. Heavy and angry at times, vulnerable and moody at others, the tracks always seem to be seconds away from hitting you with another surprising twist. The transitions in tone, emotion and progression have already become a trademark of this band.
Jindabaad produced the album independently, going commercial solely through their fans, their meagre online resources and the occasional gig around town. Despite 20-hour loadshedding, these artists, some of Nepal's youngest and most talented musicians, have managed to produce an album that is quintessentially about music and music alone. Set aside the fact that fame might be awaiting them; these are just five guys in love with what they're doing.

FREEDOM TO ROCK!!

At the Studio 4 premises, located on the dusty stretch of Bagmati river's bank in Kupandol, many aspiring young guys in their skinny jeans and converses anxiously awaited their turns to audition for the third Sprite Rock Band Challenge, each hoping to win the first of a kind competition in Nepal. While some looked totally confident, others were visibly experiencing a nervous breakdown.

Of the sixty-two bands selected, twenty will be competing in the challenge. The number will eventually come down to twelve, then six, from which the winner will be selected. Besides getting a chance to shoot a music video, the winner will also receive a cash prize of Rs 1 lakh. But for that, we will have to wait until 30 April, the grand finale of the competition.
The judges are comprised of a trio of Nepal's biggest rock icons: Robin Tamang, Nepal's ultimate rock star and the lead vocalist of Robin and the New Revolution; Abhaya Subba, the frontwoman of Abhaya and the Steam Injuns; and Dev Rana, a veteran guitarist from the band Prism.

So what will it take to scoop the prize? "The participants will be judged on three basic guidelines: song choice, originality and performance", says Robin. "Personally I am looking for that x-factor", adds Abhaya, who believes that the judges can do a good job of guiding the contenders. Stressing this fact, she shares that a few contestants from last year have come to compete again for this year's challenge, and that their performances have improved significantly.

Dibya Subba, now 28, was born in Dharan and moved to Kathmandu when he was a young boy. He was one of the top winners at the Hits FM Music Awards last month, taking home the gongs for Best Rock Composition and Best Performance by a Group or Duo. A new album called "Dibya Subba and the Blue Acids" will be released this month. He talked to WAVE about awards and inspirations.
My favourite artist is Dave Matthews. Recently I have also been listening to a lot of Anni Di Fango. Her music doesn't belong to any particular genre, but this inspires me.

My biggest and only goal in life is to continue working in the music business. I know it's hard to buy a big house and nice cars if I continue working here, but survival isn't that hard. That said, my mother would probably like it more if I could build her a nice house.
I grew up in a musical family. My father, Kewal Subba, worked in Radio Nepal and played guitar and harmonica. I learned how to play guitar from him. He passed away when I was still a teenager.
When I was playing a concert in Hong Kong, a cousin Dai bought me a guitar. It is right now my most treasured possession.
I wish my dad was alive to hear my music and listen to my albums. He is one person I wish I could share my music with.
Music is like meditation. It has changed the way I think about myself. And it has changed the way I think about other people.
I used to get angry a lot, and very quickly. As I have become older, that doesn't happen anymore. I can accept people the way they are.
My most unappealing trait is my lack of willpower. I can't make decisions, and if I make them, I can't stick to them. I have been trying to quit smoking for two years, but unsuccessfully.
I respect Anuradha Koirala a lot for what she has done to help young and vulnerable girls from trafficking. She was apparently at the Hits FM award, but I missed my chance to meet her. I would have liked to take my picture with her.

Although Bryan Adams won laurels for his music mostly in the 1990s, his distinct voice is still greatly admired by many, and his most popular single, 'Summer of 69', is completely legendary. As Adams prepares to rock Kathmandu on February 19th at the Dashrath Stadium, hyped up fans are beginning to the count down the days.
We have gathered some fun facts about the artist that we hope will rock our world
Did you know that Bryan Adams quit school at the age of 16 and convinced his mother to let him use her savings for his college education to buy a baby grand piano?
He tried his hand at acting with the 1989 movie Pink Cadillac, starring Clint Eastwood. In the movie House of Fools (2002), he played himself in a storyline where a crazy woman dreams the singer is her fiancée.
While in the band Sweeney Todd, he supplemented his income by selling pet food, working in record stores and washing dishes.
His full name in Bryan Guy Adams.
At fifteen, he became the lead singer of the band Sweeney Todd. His gravelly voice had to be speeded up for recordings. Who knew this husky baritone would end up having such a huge legion of fans?
Besides singing and doing music related work, Adams is a freelance photographer. He recently joined creative forces with Calvin Klein to do their ad work.
In a1998 Winnipeg Arena concert, Adams commented on a huge portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, saying how she never smiled in pictures. Somehow, he was invited for the 50th anniversary of the Queen's accession in 2002, where he spotted the Queen smiling and captured the rare incident in his camera. Ever since, the first smiling picture of the Queen has been on a Canadian postage stamp.
Bryan can play the guitar, piano, harmonica and bass guitar.

In recognition of his outstanding achievements, the Canadian Government named Bryan Adams an Officer of the Order of Canada in 1990. In 2010, he received the Allan Waters Humanitarian Award for his part in numerous charitable concerts and campaigns during his career.

Adams is a credible environmentalist and has been involved with Greenpeace, an organisation advocating for the protection of the environment since the 1980s.
Adam's ex-girlfriend Cecilie Thomsen accused him of having an affair with Princess Diana in 1996 after she split from Prince Charles. Coincidentally, the lyrics of a song called 'Diana Adam' that he had written in 1985 went like this: "Oh the first time I saw you was in a magazine/ The next time you was walking 'cross my television screen/ I knew right then and there that I had to make you mine/ The day that he married you /I nearly lost my mind".
His father was a diplomat and he lived in many different countries as a child.
Adams refused the movie Top Gun from using his song 'Only the Strong Survive', because he felt that the movie venerated war.
He has been nominated for an Oscar three times for his contributions to movie soundtracks. One of them was for the song 'Everything I do'. The song was written for the movie Robin Hood: The Prince of Thieves.
At every concert, Adams pulls several members of the audience up on stage to sing and play instruments on 'Summer of '69'. He also calls on one lucky girl to come up and sing 'When You're Gone' with him, the song he recorded with Sporty Spice and more recently with Pamela Anderson.
Bryan Adams writes or co-writes all his songs.
In the mid 1990s, Adams successfully campaigned for the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary with Greenpeace Chairman David McTaggart. The two distributed over 500,000 postcards at concerts around the world, encouraging politicians to vote yes for the creation of the sanctuary.
According to a survey conducted by a British poll in 2005, Adam's smash hit 'Everything I do' was the most popular choice for the first dance at weddings in the UK.
His other photographic efforts include publishing Zoo Magazine, the fashion/art magazine based in Berlin, Germany.

Jewellery should be kept to a minimum. And the same applies with make-up because let's face it, it's going to look like hell by the end of it. Just remember you are there to have a good time and not impress anyone.
Wear closed shoes – of the sneaker variety. This one applies especially to those ladies who like to strut around in high heels. You will be out in the grassy field, digging through the mud, so be sensible. Plus, sneakers allow you to bob around with the music, without having to worry about the person in front of you stepping on your toes.
Mobile phones usually don't work when there is such a massive gathering of people. So arrange a meeting point with your friends, in case you get separated.
Park far away from the stadium, or better still, take public transport to the concert. You know how bad we are at traffic jams. And this one will be the mother of all traffic jams.
The organisers have already determined how close you can get with the price of the ticket, but if you want to be in the front of your section, give yourself enough time to get to the venue.
Front or back? Depends on what you want. Front of the concert is obviously closer to the band and you experience the concert environment better. Back of the concert is more laid back and there is more space. It's your call.
Touch wood there'll be no incidents, and well, this is Bryan Adams, so the concert will probably be mellow. However, if you feel that the audience is going to get violent, don't race for the door. Try to get to the barrier or to the back, where you will be safe.
Have a good time, and for the love of god wear sensible shoes.

finding nepali music

On any night of the week, in Kathmandu or Pokhara, there's no shortage of bars with a band playing. In the tourist areas of Lakeside or Thamel you can walk into just about anywhere and there will be a group of scruffy-looking youths with electric guitars, banging out forgotten english hits, from the 80s and 90s.

It's not that i don't love the trip down memory lane, when i am in Pokhara I always go to the same bar and the two cover bands there know all my favorite songs. But sometimes you want to hear something authentic, something Nepali, something good! If i wanted to listen to english covers every night I could have stayed home!

Its not that there are no good, original Nepali bands. Nepal is full of brilliant musicians and bands. Some of them even get gigs but they are often badly advertised. On a Friday or Saturday night, in Pokhara or Kathmandu, if you want to see Nepali music it is really difficult to know where to go. Eva Haase did a post on Dhori folk singing in Kathmandu and I can't wait to check it out when i get back. Other then that I have no idea where to go to regularly catch a good band.

My favorite Nepali band are in Pokhara tomorrow and I am going to miss it** NOTE**. Nepathya are rumored to be playing a few songs at a Trade Festival. Nepathya are a folk-rock band with a very definitive style and sound. Amrit Gurung, the vocalist is regarded as a bit of a living legend, his words appealing to both young and old.

I am really jealous of my friends who are heading out to see them. I did get to see them live once. It was on my very first trip to Nepal. I didn't know anything about Nepali music. I am embarrassed to admit I didn't realize who i was watching until about a year later. I wish I had payed more attention because I feel like I might have wasted my only chance to see them live

To pay tribute to Karma and to contribute to his work, the band will be undertaking a countrywide tour starting in March, with proceeds going towards the cause of street children.
The band's first experimentation with reggae has worked out surprisingly well. "We have started playing live at the Reggae Bar in Thamel and it is a great platform for practicing", says Nilesh, who admits that the band has not always found it easy to play around with new genres.

Produced by Rise Music, the album has a total of eight tracks, of which two are the band's trademark songs: 'Maryo Ni Maryo' and 'Mercedes-Benz'. "We want to show the difference in the quality of recording from the past, and we want to target the international audience too" says Nilesh on including two of their most popular tracks. By adding both tunes to the album, the album will inevitably find resonance with old fans, while at the same time giving new fans some killer tunes to wrap their ears around.
The tribute to Pink Floyd's 'The Wall', with its peppy guitar riffs makes this rock opera sound almost like a funk groove that you want to dance to. "I don't know what the response will be from a business point of view, but we've been getting really good feedback on all the compositions", says Nilesh.
Project Namaste works because it succeeds in combining different genres, without losing the band's rock base. But the downside of Project Namaste is the lyrical aspect. It's about time that Nepali artists put aside the practiced melancholy in their songs and tread new ground.

It's been a long wait for Cobweb fans. Having last heard from them in 2004, audiences had been anxiously awaiting their next release. Finally, as 2010 drew to a close, the band launched its brand new album: Project Namaste. "Actually it was supposed to come out last year, but the outrageous power cuts in the city gave us so many problems," says Nilesh Joshi, the band's bassist. "Even when we wanted to practice in our studios, the cost of the generators didn't allow".
The response to the new album has been overwhelming. The enormous anticipation and excitement meant that they had to hold two launch events: first on 7 December at the I Club in Durbar Marg for the media, and then on 11 December for fans.
Cobweb has explored reggae themes in the new album, though not exclusively for reasons of musical influence. "This album is dedicated to one of our dear friends, Karma Ghale, who died last year at the age of 29. He had been working for the street children of Kathmandu and for a few rehabilitation programmes for children and blind people," says Nilesh. "Project Namaste was actually initiated by him. He was a reggae master. We are deeply inspired by him and want to take his work further," explains Nilesh.

World Music Day Celebrated in Pokhara

World Music Day is celebrated on 21 June every year since then. On Monday 29 June 1987, a meeting of interested parties gathered to capitalize on the marketing of this genre. 21st June is most longest day of the year so people want to pass this day with something special. Celebrating World Music Day on that day come into concept and still going on.

From about six years, Pokhara valley is celebrating this day. This is sixth World Music Day for the Pokhareli people. Different organization related to music and culture group are organizing World Music Day program on this day together. Pokhara Sangeetik Kalakar Sangh, Nepal had organized this program on 6th of Jestha 2065, Friday with co-organizer Pokhareli yuwa Sanskritik Pariwar, Sangeet Prasichan Kendra, Himali Sanskritik Pariwar, Jhighu Bhaya Jhighu Sanskriti pucha, Rastriya Lok tatha Dohori geet pratisthan and Saptarangi Pratisthan, Pokhara. On this day, Senior Artist Mr. Sharbhagyaman Pradhanagya had honour artist, musician and vocalist Mr. Ram Kaji Gurung.

All organizer and co-organizer organization perform variety of musical program and cultural program on that day. This program was held in Udhoy Banijya Hall, Pokhara and the entry fee is totally free for the audience. About eight hundred people are in the hall to watch this program. From Sarangi to electric guitar, from madal to drum have been used to perform there. Jhighu Bhaya jhighu Sansakirit pucha and Himal Sanskritik Pariwar also have performed different cultural dance. Pokhara Sangeetik Kalakar Sangh, Nepal perfrom wel-come music and different pop songs and rock and roll songs. Pokhareli yuwa sanskritik pariwar, sangeet parsichan kendra and Saptarangi pratisthan perform classical songs, modern songs and wel-come song for that day. Rastriy Lok tatha Dohori geet pratisthan perform lok and dohori songs on that day.

Program started at noon and end at 4.00 p.m. It is very nice to see such a diverse form of music and dance in one program. This kind of program should be held continuously forever for the good of music, culture and to it’s related people.

INTRODUCING :INSIDE TWO STOOPID TRIANGLES

Inside 2 Stoopid Triangles was formed in early 2001. Sushil, Anil and Vishal first met during a gig at Jump Club. Vishal was in 5th Grade Dropout back then and luckly for him Sushil (ex-Malai Dogle Tokyo and Rai Ko Ris) and Anil (ex-Malai Dogle Tokyo) were looking for a guitarist.

The band started as a trio, with the sole intention of having fun, since a lot of punk these days were more about preaching, and less about having fun. They created their own unique style of punk rock: Ramailo-Core punk, which is also a take on the thousands of “this-core and that-core” bands around.
Their first ever gig was at Upstairs, azimpat, “That place usually had jazz bands playing. We managed to piss the owner off by saying Hami pani jazz band ho,” reminiscences Sushil. The fun and a phenomenon called “Pissing people off anywhere anytime” had just started for the band. After the gig, Kshitiz, who was singing for Kottocks, joined the band.
“In 2001, our first ever album, Timi Ke Bhako, was recorded in Rai Ko Ris practise room. It was really raw a lot of early ’80s punk/hardcore influences are reflected in the album. We had to spend only Rs.200 to record that, and the recording was finished in just a day. We had one of the crappiest sounds ever, but the songs we recorded were some of our best. That’s what we think,” Vishal boastfully says.
“Back then, we had nothing to prove to anyone. We had perform in so few shows and we had not much of any background. So it was easy for us in some ways. We just wanted to create a rag-hanney music, just to have fun, make people irritated, dang-dung type of loud noise,” Sushil tries to explain. “We didn’t even know how to play our instruments properly.. hahaha,” Vishal adds again.
The second album “Chup Laga Timi” (which had Dhiraj Rai on the album cover) was recorded totally live at Studio 2000. “We had to record a song for Music Isles 2 compilation and were given a whole day for the song. After finishing the song in 2 hours flat, we recorded 13 other songs live in another hour, or maybe it was two,” informed Anil. “We made a huge mistake while recording “Ladai” for the comp. But no one noticed. Haha. One of the advantages of playing original music! But we think we played far better in the first album than in the second album. Chup Laga Timi was simple, hard and really fast. We took a lot of time for the second one. The first one has a lot more variety and ramailo-ness.”
The originators of Ramailo-core thus speak out: We started this band with one reason – to piss and rag people while we have fun doing it. Rag hanna lai nai form gareko ho. “There’s a huge politics in punk scene these days. It’s really rigid confined and narrow-minded. There’re lot of theories and statements, which we never want to follow. Anti-corporation, Anarchism, ke ke.. We hate the preachy mentality of a lot of punk rock these days. That makes people very intolerant, and intolerance was never meant to be a part of punk. Punk rock to us is about doing your own thing, thinking for yourself. We may not agree with someone’s ideologies but we don’t tell them “you’re wrong.” We have a lot of friends who don’t share our ideologies and we’ll play with anyone, regardless of whether we share the same philosophies or not.”
The band has been doing everything on their own since Day 1 – from organizing gigs to distributing albums. Vishal, along with Subel of Tom, Dick & Harry, have their own record label called Hamro Records Ramro Records. “People either hate our band or love our band. There is no middle path. We’ve always had a wicked sense of humor, and people who don’t understand us hate us and we’ve offended quite a lot of people. We’ve never tried to imitate foreign punk bands. We may share the same ideologies, but we know what works here and what doesn’t. We have our own take on what happens in this country, and we relate ourselves to that.”
Sushil muses on, “… Music matters the least, the people playing it matters. We matter. Why what and how we play, that matters. What kind of fun you are seeking, it all matters and then only the music matters.”
Their third album, which is as yet untitled, will have a change in sound. Vishal explains, “We still have our basic sound, but this time we’ve brought together a lot of our influences, which isn’t just hardcore or punk rock. There’s ska, there’s reggae and rap too. As usual, it’s going to be a ramailo album which everyone must listen. We have even improved our playing skills a little.” Sushil interrupts, ‘”And the recording will be cheap and will be recorded in the best studio of Nepal..hahaha.”

Back In The Limelight- Sanjeev Singh!

Right when the music industry was being bombarded with new offerings, one after another, one artist, who once took us by storm with his smash hit “Chulesima”, makes a huge comeback! Yes, Sanjeev Singh finally returns to the music scene, thanks to his album “Muglan”!

“Muglan” was officially released on 12th May, Thursday at iClub, Durbarmag and it was launched by a number of media personalities some of whom were singers Nabin Bhattarai, Sunil Bardewa, Director of Rise Music Binod Singh, Sangam Rai- manager at CTV Mobile and Saptahik writer Krishna Bhattarai. However, the event wasn’t dedicated only to Singh’s his latest effort. The singer shared the spotlight with the upcoming band Fedrick N H2O. The rock outfit unleashed their album “Ghaat”. Both the sets belong to the label of Rise Music.

Singh and the band lightened up the evening function with their performances. The Nirmaya hitmaker performed a range of his older hits as well as few from his new disc such as “Chulesima”, “Muglan”, “Jaba Samma” and “Sanuma”. The event also saw the release of the music video for the album’s title track. Penned and composed by the singer himself, the visual for “Muglan” has been directed by Astha fame Naren Limbu.

After a hiatus of four years, Singh has come up with his sixth studio album which consists of eight melodious sentimental songs. Most of them were recorded in London where the singer has been living for some years.

In the span of ten years in the music field, Singh has come up with five other records: “Aakaasbata”, “Soul”, “Selected Sanjeev”, “Best Of Sanjeev Singh” and “Always”.

Considering the urban influence on the hip-hop music genre, it is surprising to hear Nirnaya Shrestha, whose hip-hop nom de guerre is Nirnaya Da'NSK, say most of his songs are inspired by a patriotic love for his country.

When reminded of the numerous odes to bling, babes and dollar bills, Nirnaya is quick to point out that hip-hop is less about glamour and more about story telling, whatever that context might be. And such are the times that, the state of the country being what it is, hip-hop songs are now about the unity and preservation of the nation and the national sense of being.
It is not just Nirnaya. Robin and the New Revolution put out a rock number '13,000' in memory of those who had died in the war and called for everyone to remember their sacrifice. 1974 AD's 'Yo Man Ta Mero Nepali Ho' is probably their most well known song after 'Sambodhan'.
Perhaps it is an indication that more than ever before we need an anthem to remind us of who we are, and where we want to be. How close are we to finding one in the modern age?
If you are young enough to remember the school playground, the songs that made the list of every cultural program or parent's day at school were the oldies that went back many decades to the seventies. You either danced to 'Maitighar, Maitighar', crooned Gopal Yonzan's 'Desh le ragat mage malai bali chadhau' if you were lucky enough to have the voice for it, or marched to 'Rato ra Chandra Surya' with a flag fluttering up front.
There wasn't one particular song that tugged the heartstrings of Nepalis, there were many. The potential power of each these songs to unify was diluted by the sheer number of them. Compare this with A R Rahman's rousing 'Vande Mataram' or Neil Diamond's powerful 'America'.
"There was almost a void in the genre," says Nirnaya, "because while they made you nostalgic and even cry, there was not anything contemporary that spoke to the young people, that made them stand up with their hands on their hearts pledging allegiance to the nation."
"I wrote 'Ma Nepali' when most of my friends were leaving the country," he says. "Almost everyone seemed to want to go away. There was no pride in being a Nepali. I wanted people to be proud of their heritage, and I wanted this song to do that."
'Ma Nepali' sold more than 25,000 copies the year it was released and Nirnaya even won the award for Best Vocal Performance with National Feeling at the Image Awards. But 'Ma Nepali' did not become the song you remember when you think of Nirnaya as he had hoped it would. That' still 'Din Pani Bityo'. "Most of my songs are patriotic," says Nirnaya. "I wrote 'Mechi dekhi Mahakali Samma' after that, and that didn't exactly fly off the shelves."
In the straight-up mainstream pop genre, Raju Lama played around with his folksy ballad style to produce 'Mero Nepal', literally a love song to the nation. Probably the most heartbreaking of all is Nepathya's Amrit Gurung's entire album Mero Desh written during the conflict, as a "longing for peace".

For those tired of mainstream melodies after the plethora of jazzy-bluesy festivals in the last couple of months, December is going to be, metaphorically speaking, a breath of fresh air. Everybody, welcome to Nepal the first international metal rock concert entitled 'Silence Festival' (we know it will be anything but silent!). It's organized by Silence Entertainment, a new production house and will be held on 18 December. The line-up will feature two Swiss bands: The Motherockers Gang and The Enigmatik, and four Nepali bands: Binaash, 72 hrs, Alt-F4, and Monkey Temple. Here is a bit about the guys intent on breaking your eardrums:

The Motherockers Gang was formally formed in spring this year. They started together by entering a competition to be a support act for US guitar legend Joe Satriani. They beat 297 other bands and Satriani himself lauded their performance. That was 2008 and now they are putting the finishing touches on their first CD, which will be out later this year. They describe their music as undestroyable hand-made power rock. Lovely.

One of Switzerland's most active black-death-metal bands, The Enigmatik has come up with seven albums since 1998. Their current line up includes Guido Wyss on the drums, Dominique Gendre and Nicolas Von Ritter on the guitars, Loïc Grobéty on bass and vocals and Ben Plüss and Randy on vox. One reviewer described the genre as "Brutal Jazz Metal," and went on so say, "Enigmatik is a really original band and their music is really disturbing." That's disturbing to know.
The story of Binaash's formation is that of break-ups to make-ups of its members from other bands. Formerly known as Kaal, the band was formed in 2009 when vocalist Prateek Raj Neupane split with Ugra Karma and 72hrs and got together with drummers Rishav Acharya and Tshewang Tamang (now replaced by Bijent Bikram Shah) to pursue their death metal enthusiasm. Prabin (ex Arachnids) joined later for growls and grunts and so did Shashank (72hrs) on guitars. Good to know they're all friends now.
After winning the third spot in the Sprite Bandh Challenge of 2008, an open music competition, Alt-F4 enjoyed good coverage. With Girish on the guitars, Santosh on the drums, Sameer on bass and Kiran on vocals, their music is hugely driven by Nepal's aggressive social and political scene. Let's hope the political leaders are invited for an earful.

METAL EVOLUTION IN NEPAL I

Metal and it’s emergence in the Nepali music scene has never been properly documented in the past. Hence, through this article, an effort will be made to present a general overview of bands, musicians and the “underground” scene as a whole which was responsible for infusing the first seeds of “metal” here in Nepal, especially in the Kathmandu Valley.
A Brief Rock History in Nepal (before 2000)
Back in 1970s and 1980s, bands such as - The Prism, Brotherhood, Revival,Kathmandu Katz, Raduim, etc and much later in the late 1980s bands likeNewaz, Wrathchild, Criss Cross, The Paduwas, Maneater, etc were rocking the streets of Kathmandu Valley. Wrathchild was among the few bands that did heavy metal covers exclusively in the concerts. Newaz even had an album out which was predominantly rock and actually did quite well in the early days of commercial music in Nepal.
During the early 1990s, Vegetarian Vampires and Dead Soul were two of the prominent bands playing “thrash metal” in various concerts. Vegetarian Vampires were one of the first bands to cover Slayer, and Sodom, while Dead Soul frequently covered Iron Maiden, Overkill and Metallica. Dead Soul is also remembered as one of the best cover bands in the metal scene then, doing many ‘tribute’ gigs.
There were of course already lots of other regular as well as “one gig” bands that were doing metal covers live. During the early and mid 90s Iron Maiden’s Losfer Words and Metallica’s Am I Evil were concert staples. Almost every hard rock show would have those two songs played by at least one band. It’s too bad that many such bands have never been documented properly.
That was also a time when several ‘beat contests’ were held all around the valley where bands competed for a prize. Although a lot of songs played in those competitions were of the Heavy Metal/Hard Rock genre, original songs were a crowd turn-off and were rarely performed.
Bands were sprouting in the Pokhara valley at the same time as well. Anamesis, and later Vivax, came with some thrash metal stuff while Grease and Numskullstarted a grunge/punk movement.
Cobweb has to be the most prominent and consistent rock band of Nepal. In 1993, this band from Patan released their first album “Anjaan” which showcased their heavy metal and classic rock influences. Their live shows have always been full of energy and true showmanship. Around late 90’s, a few songs from the band Drishty (formed by Iman B. Shah while he was studying in Nebraska, Omaha) hit the FM airwaves in a few rock shows. It was probably the first ‘metal’ based original song by a Nepali band to get recorded and played on air. While in USA, Drishty recorded two albums in the bedroom studio setup by Iman B. Shah himself, but sadly, none of the albums were formally released. Mukti and Revival, which consisted one of the most “senior” rock/blues musicians, also released “Kalanki Ko Jam” in 2000, the album became an instant hit in the Nepali music market. In the same period, Robin n Looza: also made it big in the rock scene.
THE UNDERGROUND UPROAR:
2000 – 2006:
Without a shred of doubt, Ugrakarma’s release of demo “Himalayan Metal of Death” can be termed as the monumental epoch of the starting of metal scene in Nepal. Of course there were already some bands playing metal in the concerts, but metal remained within the confines of concert hall walls.
Aayush Maskey (Guitarist, Ugrakarma) reminiscences: “Back then the scene was just starting. Most of the bands were focused on playing popular music. Almost in every concert you went to, bands were playing the same songs Paranoid, Smoke on the water, Roadhouse Blues. There used to be a lot of street festivals and rock concerts but metal in concerts were virtually non-existent. Hearing Metallica in a show would get people talking - Metallica bajayo yaar… kyaa hyabby. “
While the scene was slowing picking up pace, many of the so-called “bands” sadly never had any originals. Few bands which had originals never managed to get it recorded. The same story of lack of resources, and lack of better recording studios haltered the progress of many potential good Metal bands. By 2000, there were already several professional recording studios in Kathmandu, but none equipped well enough to record any heavy stuff and none having any qualified recording engineers with sound knowledge of what “metal” music actually is.
The emergence of BMI Studios (otherwise known as Sacred Soundz) was an important event in the history of Metal in Nepal. The owner/engineer Iman B. Shah (Guitarist – Drishty and formerly of Vegetarian Vampires) was a himself a ‘metalhead’ and was familiar with capturing the essence of Metal - heavy riffs, thundering drums, thumping bass and deafening vocals – in the recording studio. Out of the few albums/songs that were ever recorded by local bands at that time, most of them like Ugrakarma’s Himalayan Metal of Death, Blood Metal Initiation and Albatross’ Hi: Fly were done at BMI/Sacred Soundz. The existence of a ‘metal’ recording studio opened up a lot of avenues for future bands trying to cut a record or a demo.
By the time Ugrakarma finally released their full length album “Blood Metal Initiation“ around 2001, there were already a horde of bands in the valley playing quite a range of metal music. Several band contests, where an original was mandatory to compete, also fueled the new bands to seek the creativity within them and come up with something imperative. While such contests more than often yielded 9 pop bands for every metal band, it still was a very significant step forward. More gigs were being organized, and more bands emerged. But the difference between these gigs and the gigs 5 years ago was monumental – these new bands were playing their own songs.
One of those bands was Refused 13. The band had played their first gig opening for Dead Soul (on Metallica Anthology Concert, 2001)The band started creating a formidable reputation in the valley as a very “tight” metal band with a “in your face” attitude, conceived by many as the band to pick metal whereDead Soul had left and then elevate the scene into another level. During the band’s active years, the band organized another memorable gig “Keep Suffering” at Nakkhipot, Lalitpur city.
Anuraag Sharma, former vocalist of Albatross on the band: “Refused 13 was definitely a force - the band and the persona of the band. I still remember that when they would walk into a concert, I would try to look at them without getting caught, because they were “Refused13″ and they looked like hardcore badasses that would kill you if you looked at them wrong”.

STRENGTH BEYOND STRENGTH:
Albatross, which started as an alternative rock band, changed their initial line up and importantly, the direction towards performing metal songs. The release of “Hi: Fly” in 2003 is also another benchmark in the metal history of Nepal. About the album, Mahendra M. Rai, former member of Cruentus states – “All the ten songs cover the aspect of all that is rock n roll. It’s heavy, it’s groovy and it’s trippy. Almost all of the songs are memorable and after you’ve gone through the record couple of times the songs will be imprinted within your head for quite a long time. Such is the power of ‘Hi:Fly’ and I envy Diwas and Sunny for coming up with such great riffs. I would like to classify this record as a ‘Stoner Rock/Metal’ as it quite fits the style. The first of its kind in our whole local underground scene!”
Another noteworthy band that pushed the underground scene upward from obscurity was Nastik. Formed in the late 2001, Nastik became the new leader among the “metal” bands, solely because of the use of growling vocals (aided by the fact that even though Ugrakarma is the first DM band, they really never performed live). Nastik released a self titled demo album on 2002, which featured “Maukil” – a fan favorite song in concerts. Nastik then released “Judge Death” – an all out death metal album on 2003. However, as in many other cases, the album was never released officially but fans had their own ways to get their hands on the album.
Third World Chaos’s four song EP “Infero” was released in 2003 which is significant in the terms that it introduced “hardcore” influenced metal into Kathmandu’s scene. During the active days, TWC performed regularly in concerts with Nastik and X-mantra and helped the scene to become stronger.
The release of X-mantra’s debut album “Crying For Peace” in 2003 hit the underground metal scene like a tsunami and created an astonishing aftermath. Their “No Cover Songs in Gigs” code created an astounding impact among other active bands in the scene. Several bands started performing originals who gradually realized that performing “decent originals” was more important than doing any “babbal cover songs”. “Shalik” and “Chidiya Ghar” became new anthems in the metal concerts. In simple words, X-mantra did it. What Cobwebstood for the mainstream rock scene in Nepal, X-mantra proudly stood for the metal and underground scene in Nepal. Anuraag Sharma (ex-Albatross): “Even though the album ‘Crying for Peace’ is 50% crap and the band eventually lost it, the other half of the album that does work is too well-done and too innovative to ignore. I think ‘Crying for Peace’ paved the way for a more noise-receptive audience than there would have been otherwise.”
Until their philosophical demise and in an attempt to garner commercial limelight by changing the direction, X-mantra’s first two albums (the second one being “Kurshi”, 2004) set a standard in the Nepali Metal history – proving that it was possible to fuse aggression in the almost poetic styled Nepali lyrics with riff based groovy metal.

The year 2003 saw the recording of a song titled “Itihaas” by Maya. With a strong Black Metal style riffing and probably the strongest lyrics ever in the whole Nepali music scene, Maya had an admirable influence on the next generation of Black Metal bands like Beyond, Antim Grahan and Cruentus.
The same year, members of Nastik and Albatross also joined forces asAbattoir and recorded a self titled album before disbanding.

THE UNDERGROUND REVOLT:

At the end of 2004, the bands like Ugrakarma, Nastik, TWC, Albatross,Refused 13 and X-mantra were either permanently inactive or disbanded or have moved away from the underground scene. By 2005, a group of more powerful bands such as Antim Grahan, Cruentus, Muga:, Brutal, Holocaust, andBreeding Pestilence started to bring “new” and “innovative” stuff into the scene. And later, bands like Epitaph, Morgoth and Vhumi forged new styles into the scene.

ALBATROSS

The history of the band starts quite some time before it was actually formed. Back in their pre-SLC days (1997), Sunny and Avaya played in a band called “Applesauce” along with Massismo (Max). Max played bass, Avaya played the drums, and Sunny handled both the mic and the guitar. Covering artists such as Alice in Chains and Silverchair, Applesauce played a variety of live shows, establishing itself as a band that loves to perform. However, despite a promising future, it seemed that the band was destined to fail. In 1998, Max had to leave for Denmark, and while this deprived them of a nifty bassist and a close friend, their approaching examinations seemed to spell the word doom.
After surviving their exams, however, Sunny and Avaya planned to do anything but sit around feeling voiceless. The only problem was that with Max gone, the band was incomplete. It was around this time that Avaya started fooling around with a bass guitar, and discovered something very strange… he actually enjoyed it!. A few more slap-and-pops were enough to convince him that it was time to trade in his sticks for a plectrum. Looking for other musicians to help complete a group, the band came across Dipesh. Even though they had been friends for quite some time, no one had any idea that Dipesh could actually play drums. At that time, Dipesh was playing drums in his school band “Saboteur”, and after seeing him play, they knew they had found their new drummer. All it took was a little persuasion and a lot of threats (hehe), before Dipesh agreed to play with them. And with Nitesh on vocals, and Sunny handling axe duties again, “Albatross” was born.
While the whole music scene of Nepal revolved around hard rock and heavy metal, the band ripped through cliches with their furious live shows and their covers of unconventional bands like Rage Against the Machine and Red Hot Chili Peppers. They performed quite extensively and became a regular feature at the Bamboo’s Club in Thamel. “Nitesh used to hang out with us and his style really reaped the hell out of my brains”, Sunny says. At this time, Albatross also recorded a single “Broke 17″, a track that pays tribute to one of their favorite bands, Rage Against the Machine, with its choppy riffs and jacked up rap. “We were (and are) really influenced and inspired by RATM and so we recorded a song Broke 17. It was recored at the Sacred Soundz Studio and produced by one of the coolest people in the world: Iman Bikram Shah”, the band says. Although this single failed to get the airplay it deserved, the band continued playing live shows (the lifeblood of Albatross), and even jammed with Axata at various events. Then, with Nitesh deciding to take a break from vocal duty, the band decided to take a slightly different musical direction and along came Sirish from Monkey Temple on vocals. With his distinguishing ability to throw his voice amazingly high, the band found that they could now play many other styles of music as well. ” With [Sirish] Dali we started playing covers of Korn, Creed, Pantera, Pearl Jam, Iron Maiden, etc. at our various gigs. And to top it all off, our new tastes helped us develop our original work as well.” The band recorded another single, titled “hellskitchen”, a metal-meets-rock track that features a very tight string section and precise drumming along with some lung-stretching vocal feats. The track has been featured on the Muzik Isles compilation album, and although it has fallen prey to poor mixing, any Albatross live show will bring this song up to its full potential.
The band had just barely begun to relax when it faced problems again. Sirish had to leave Nepal in order to continue his studies in America. The band was without a vocalist, yet again. Not knowing what to do, Sunny and Avaya thought things over and decided to take a risk. About a month ago, they had seen another band play at a GAA gig in Thamel. The band had just been starting out and went by the rather comical name of “Mop Handle Mama”. They decided to call up Diwas and Anuraag from MPH and jam with them for a while, and see how things went. To everyone’s surprise, they discovered they all had similar tastes in music, and their ideas about music flowed in pretty much the same direction. And so, after a month of heavy headbanging followed by some heavy bonging, Anuraag and Diwas officially joined Albatross.
Wishing to take the band along slightly darker and heavier roads, they are all dedicated to churning out the heaviest music they can. Twin-riffing and thrashing out solos with a characteristic precision that still houses the fury of the bands they are inspired by, the string section of the band, comprised of Sunny and Diwas, has attained a new heaviness that is multiplied by the slam of Avaya’s versatile bass-playing: from the teethy crunchiness of a full-blown metal song, to the engine-smooth groove of funk-rap inflection. Influenced heavily by Korn and RATM, Anuraag revels in pushing his voice to the limits and more than compensates for any lack of through frenzied doses of banging the very blood out of his head. And with the unique skinslamming abilities and almost jazzlike timing of Dipesh’s drums, Albatross is indeed flying high. In more ways than one.
CURRENT STUFF:
The band is working on its first ever full-length album. Wishing to address various topics such as the recent rather disheartening slander of the band’s name and more seriously, the state of the country, they would like to take their time and come up with meaningful songs that have all the “force and power of a punch to the gut”.

“We want to come up with songs that have indomitable strength and fury. Something as brutal as Pantera and yet with all the intelligence of Rage Against the Machine. When we get on stage, we want to be able to just explode… so that the sky and the ground change places for us. Nothing beats racking the hell out of our respective instruments and having a good time. And that’s the biggest factor in it all: Playing live. And having a fucking kickass time doing it.”

hough the outcomes were less than favourable, it seems that the hype around last year's COP 15 (the Copenhagen Climate Change Conference, remember?) managed to mobilise not only the environmentalist hippies, but inspired a much wider group of people to care about the earth. After the Maldives started a trend by holding a cabinet meeting underwater to highlight the threat posed by global warming, Nepal held a meeting in Everest Base Camp to draw attention to melting snowcaps in the Himalayas. Despite a series of environmental events (not all of which have been misguided), hardly anything has changed. But then as human beings we can only hope, right? On this note, Alliance Française with the help of Cultures France organised Planet Nepal Festival of Arts and Environment from October 29-31 in Patan Durbar Square, the first of its kind in Nepal.
The three-day event was a collection of roundtable discussions, documentary screenings, and installations focusing on the environmental issues of Nepal. One of the highlights was the musical performances by Nepali and French artists like Kutumba, Lo'Jo Trio, Tryo, Nirnaya Da'NSK and others.

Kutumba, who gave the first performance of the Friday-night event, entranced the audience with their energetic folklore beat – the effect of the percussion instruments augmenting the energy of the crowd. While the performances from Tryo and Lo'Jo Trio may have sounded gibberish to the majority of the Nepali audience present, nothing could stop them from dancing away to the upbeat reggae tunes amongst others. Finally, Nirnaya Da'NSK brought the house down with his Nep Hop style.
On the occasion of this festival, five Nepali performers, Kutumba, Nirnaya Da'NSK & Astha B, Bijay Vaidya and famous Poet Manjul Nepal, came up with a special album called Recycled Music, compiling songs from various artists to tell a story about the environment.
The lively interaction between the artists and audience was visible throughout the musical part of the festival. It's just a shame that the organisers didn't capitalise on this enthusiasm and leave some of the exhibition spaces open for guests. During the days, the venue looked like everyday Durbar Square, but the place completely changed colours in the evenings, with colourful lights put in the palace and in almost every temple.

A group of active youngsters from Pokhara are set to organise the Pokhara Music Awards 2061 in Dipendra Shabhagriha on 3 September. According to organising committee coordinator Sumesh Sherchan, the music awards will cover all the categories including folk, pop and modern Nepali songs from the western region. Nova Computer and Language Institute is organising the award ceremony. According to him, the award ceremony is being held to support and encourage artists from Pokhara, which is considered to be the capital of Nepali music. "Even though there are many artists who have shown talent, they have not been given equal opportunities," he says. Songs will be selected for the awards by the votes of listeners. There are voting boxes in different parts of Pokhara and the ballot is going to be collected with the help of the local media. The music awards will also have performances by various artists. Himal Media (Himal, Wave and Nepali Times), Safal Media Pokhara, Annapurna F.M. Pokhara, Gurung Cable Network Pokhara and Pokharacity.com are the official media for the show.
