"The Hives have been mostly silent over the past five years, but the Swedish rockers are ready to make their comeback in June with the release of Lex Hives, their fifth studio album. "Go Right Ahead," the first single from the album, finds the band playing to their strengths – bold riffs, blunt hooks, snappy beats – while augmenting their grooves with sassy brass. "Here is our new song," says frontman Howlin' Pelle Almquist. "We have done what we can with it. Now it's your turn."

"Lex Hives is due in stores on June 5th, but you can stream "Go Right Ahead" today."

BRUSHES WITH ‘NAM by Rick Dale

My draft number was over 200
Thought I’d never forget the exact number
but it was winding down and the danger
was low anyway
So college it was
Jim was tall
Scraggly beard and googly eyes
Drank Jim Beam
by the gallon
Said he picked up the habit “in country”
A chopper door gunner
One of the ones who survived
Didn’t survive college though
First Blood helped me
see how we treated returning vets
Hollywood movie
Serious issue
Read Tunnels of Cu Chi
Thought about enlisting at 32 years old
Guilt over the narrow miss
Friends talked me out of it
Otherwise I’d probably be pieces in Iraq or fertilizing a jungle vine
Taught high school
Students with learning disabilities
Mostly boys
History class was torture for them until
I bought a picture history of the Vietnam War
Read it to them
Talked about it
They actually wanted to take the chapter tests
I wrote
Robert’s got one foot planted in the bar
and one at the VA hospital
Self-medicates with weed
Says the stuff they prescribe for PTSD
makes him worse
Marines are crazy to begin with
The jungle just made him crazier
Estranged from all his family
Even his children I won’t join them
Don’s got a heart of gold
Melts when his grand-daughter says “Cappy”
Booze to forget Downers
so he doesn’t kill someone at work
He calls them “happy pills”
I’ve seen happy and that’s not it
Crystal’s husband died of a brain tumor
His memory haunts our relationship
I don’t even know what he did in ‘Nam
but I know he got exposed to the orange monster
and despite my own escape nevertheless
I’m just another victim 40 years later
and 8,800 miles away
They lie to get us into a war
and then they lie about it being over
It’s never over

Bio Rick Dale

Born December 11, 1955, Rick Dale grew up in Wellsboro, Pennsylvania, home of the famous Pennsylvania Grand Canyon. He earned his doctorate at Penn State in 1999 has spent his career in special education as a teacher, administrator, consultant, state-level bureaucrat, and, currently, a professor of special education at a state university in Maine.

He has spent the last 10 years thinking, reading, talking, and writing about Jack Kerouac.

Part of that effort resulted in his book, The Beat Handbook: 100 Days of Kerouactions (2008).

Rick maintains a Kerouac-obsessed blog called The Daily Beat, and has published interviews with Kerouac notables such as Al Hinkle and Helen Weaver.

Rick started writing poetry in high school, and flirted with it off-and-on ever since. In 2009 he edited and self-published a book of poetry, "Life Lines," by Charles James of Elmira, New York. James made a name for himself by winning a free speech case that went all the way to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit in 1972.

The case was the subject of a 1974 book, Freedom Spent, by Richard Harris.

"Life Lines" won first place in the poetry category of the 18th Annual Writer’s Digest Self-Published Book Awards.

Rick publishes his own poetry on a blog titled Words Are My Drug of Choice. He lives along a beautiful lake in Maine (the area made famous by the movie, On Golden Pond with his partner, Crystal, her son, and two cats.

Review

Poeticus Interruptus, November 13, 2011

Xcarl

This review is from: One and Only: The Untold Story of On the Road (Hardcover)

The Beat Generation saga of the love quadrangle among Neal Cassady, LuAnne Henderson, Jack Kerouac and Carolyn Cassady heats up here both off and on the road and still running. Luanne is perhaps a controversial figure: considered the one true love of Neal's. This is not to say that his love for Carolyn was false. Not surprising that the book comes out now, as "On the Road," the first legit film based on Kerouac's work is due to be released soon; and LuAnne's story, as portrayed by the mainstream actress Kristen Stewart, is bound to introduce the character to an entirely new (and huge) set of fans. Also perhaps the legal tide against the current ownership of the Kerouac estate has loosened the will of Beat historian Nicosia, whose contribution with Henderson's daughter has stirred these embers, some still glowing with brilliant insight into an era that forever needs to be understood.

"November," by Malcolm Guite

2011-11-11T22:06:00.001-08:00

November

November pierces with its bleak remembrance
Of all the bitterness and waste of war.
Our silence tries but fails to make a semblance
Of that lost peace they thought worth fighting for.
Our silence seeths instead with wraiths and whispers
And all the restless rumour of new wars,
The shells are singing as we sing our vespers,
No moment is unscarred, there is no pause,
In every instant bloodied innocence
Falls to the weary earth, and whilst we stand
Quiescence ends again in acquiescence,
And Able's blood still cries in every land
One silence only might redeem that blood
Only the silence of a dying God.

One and Only, by Gerald Nicosia and Anne Marie Santos

With the help of Lu Anne’s daughter, Anne Marie Santos, Gerry tells the story of the beautiful 15 year old girl who loved both men, and taught them how to love each other…. Please join us.

Dead Kennedys' Guitarist East Bay Ray Announces Album

Dead Kennedys Guitarist East Bay Ray Announces Album

The Killer Smiles "S/T" set for worldwide release

on September 13, 2011

Influential Dead Kennedys guitarist East Bay Ray announces the release of the self-titled debut album of his new band, East Bay Ray and The Killer Smiles. The record will come out September 13 via MVD Audio. The twelve new tracks were produced by Paul Leary, Butthole Surfers' guitarist and widely known for producing Sublime's massive self-titled CD and their single "Santeria."

Along with Ray's distinctive sound, the recording also features the voice and lyrics of Skip McSkipster from the Wynonna Riders and recent Dead Kennedys' tours.

As East Bay Ray describes the album: "While Skip and I were touring in the DKs, we started writing a batch of new songs and wanted to record them. And then Paul Leary, who the DKs used to play with in warehouses back in the day, took a liking to the project and he ended up producing it."

Skip declares, "Working with a guitarist of Ray's caliber has allowed me to more fully explore where my vocals can go. People will find the album very wide-ranging and a good start for where the band will take us"

They are joined on the album by drummer Steve Wilson and bassist Greg Reeves, both who have also filled in on several major Dead Kennedys tours.
