Welcome to the 2nd Edition of my blog “Taking Social Media Seriously,” and how it is the wave of the future in internet marketing and possibly the final thrust towards the switch from paper advertising to computer screen/internet marketing. Social Media is a newer more interactive and effective version of old school tele-marketing and door to door sales. It is a very direct way to communicate your service or product to a very large prospective customer audience. Facebook first came out as a personal social network but over time has evolved into a business tool as well. The reasons of this being attractive are obvious…you can get involved and “Like” what you want and not like what you don’t. Therefore this automatically increases the chances of a sales in most cases, because there must be interest of some sort in the first place for the possible consumer to “Like” the page. Think of it as kind of like a subscription, yet free for the consumer.

The Chillicothe Ohio Facebook Page is an attempt to take Social Media and a geographical localized area, bringing the local Facebook Business Pages to a centralized spot being in this case the COFB. This is just one of many different angles and advantages that the Chillicothe Ohio Facebook Page has, and in upcoming blogs I will be explaining all of them in great detail. Facebook and Twitter arent just for personal use anymore. As a matter of fact Social Media has quickly become the most effective way in my opinion to market your product or service.No matter how large or small your business or concept is, it has become a must to get involved in Social Media Marketing.

Twitter evolved into a great way to communicate in short simple messages a special or link to information about your business, and when Twitter simply changed its Title Tags last year, it allowed Tweets to be indexed in Search Engines like Google and Yahoo creating a voice for your business.

Facebook then created Facebook Pages, with the intention of business socializing and networking. Soon after Twitter became search engine friendly, Facebook changed Title tags and began having posts indexed in Google and other major search engines.

When I moved back to the Chillicothe after several years of the big city life, I noticed right away that internet marketing was pretty much a untapped market in the Scioto Valley. I started out in the Search Engine Optimization/SEO side of internet marketing and had great success with getting local businesses on the 1st page of Google, but the problem was that locally very few had switched to search engines from phone books. So even though my tool was effective in concept it wasnt working for the business and there bottom line. The old saying "build it and they will come" wasnt happening and it was time to look for new and more effective ways for my service to be a benefit to a business, and not just another cost.

Then came Facebook Pages........

Almost 30,000 facebook profiles have a Chillicothe location dialed in as their present location. Once I discovered this, I had found where the people were. Now the task was to see the local businesses create and utilize a Facebook Business Page.
6 months ago, very few if any businesses were in the facebook universe yet. I started creating Facebook Pages as a part of my marketing package and promoting them heavy on facebook. One by one, the local businesses appeared on facebook walls
with people liking them and creating whats called "viral" (self growth) growth. But after all these different local businesses had created their pages, there was no commom spot for the Chillicothe user to view Facebook Business Pages..

1.Open your fan page (this assumes you have one)
2.Click on the + to add the Notes Tab if you don’t have it added already
3.Click on Notes Tab and hit Add New Note
4.You will get a form for adding notes, but instead click on the Notes Icon above the form
5.From this screen you will see that you can import a blog. Add the URL to your RSS feed and hit Start Importing.

If you have a website then you already know the importance of traffic. Traffic is to Internet marketing as location is to real estate. It's the only thing that really matters. If you cannot generate targeted visitors to your site, you will not make any sales.

Usually the owner or designer of the website is the person designated to drive traffic to the site. The chief ingredient in generating traffic is the search engine. Of coarse, you can use advertising, but it's going to cost you. Using the search engines to generate targeted (interested in your product) traffic is the least expensive method known.

Unfortunately, many website owners do not understand the importance of search engine visibility, which leads to traffic. They place more importance on producing a "pretty" website. Not that this is bad, but it is really secondary to search engine placement. Hopefully, the following list of common mistakes, made by many website owners, will help you generate more targeted traffic to your site...after all, isn't that what you want.

1. Not using keywords effectively.
This is probably one of the most critical area of site design. Choose the right keywords and potential customers will find your site. Use the wrong ones and your site will see little, if any, traffic.

2. Repeating the same keywords.
When you use the same keywords over and over again (called keyword stacking) the search engines may downgrade (or skip) the page or site.

3. Robbing pages from other websites.
How many times have you heard or read that "this is the Internet and it's ok" to steal icons and text from websites to use on your site. Don't do it. Its one thing to learn from others who have been there and another to outright copy their work. The search engines are very smart and usually detect page duplication. They may even prevent you from ever being listed by them.

4. Using keywords that are not related to your website.
Many unethical website owners try to gain search engine visibility by using keywords that have nothing at all to do with their website. They place unrelated keywords in a page (such as "sex", the name of a known celebrity, the hot search topic of the day, etc.) inside a meta tag for a page. The keyword doesn't have anything to do with the page topic. However, since the keyword is popular, they think this will boost their visibility. This technique is considered spam by the search engines and may cause the page (or sometimes the whole site) to be removed from the search engine listing.

5. Keyword stuffing.
Somewhat like keyword stacking listed above, this means to assign multiple keywords to the description of a graphic or layer that appears on your website by using the "alt=" HTML parameter. If the search engines find that this text does not really describe the graphic or layer it will be considered spam.

6. Relying on hidden text.
You might be inclined to think that if you cannot see it, it doesn't hurt. Wrong.... Do not try to hide your keywords or keyword phrases by making them invisible. For example, some unethical designers my set the keywords to the same color as the background of the web page; thereby, making it invisible.

7. Relying on tiny text.
This is another version of the item above (relying on hidden text). Do not try to hide your keywords or keyword phrases by making them tiny. Setting the text size of the keywords so small that it can barely be seen does this.

8. Assuming all search engines are the same.
Many people assume that each search engine plays by the same rules. This is not so. Each has their own rule base and is subject to change anytime they so desire. Make it a point to learn what each major search engine requires for high visibility.

9. Using free web hosting.
Do not use free web hosting if you are really serious about increasing site traffic via search engine visibility. Many times the search engines will eliminate content from these free hosts.

10. Forgetting to check for missing web page elements.
Make sure to check every page in your website for completeness, like missing links, graphics, etc. There are sites on the web that will do this for free.

The webpage where your link is located should also contain no more than 30 other out-going links to other websites. Other excellent techniques of acquiring backlinks are directory submissions, posting articles, blogs and forums.

For directory submissions select the proper directory category and take a look at how many other websites are contained in the category where your link would be posted, if you can manage to get on the first or second page of the listings, this is a quality backlink. Also look at the Google page rank of the landing page for your link. If the page has a Google page rank this is also a quality backlink.

Stay within your category, relevant content is very important to the search engines. Write an article preferably relevant in content to your website and submit the article to high quality article directories. Blogs are an excellent way to get quality one-way backlinks, Blog sites also receive tons of traffic, which in turn give your site more exposure. Posting your link on forum pages is also an efficient method of aquiring backlinks instantly.

Backlinks to avoid would be a zero page ranked webpage, especially if the home page has a zero page rank. Links posted within framed webpages which will also steal your traffic. Especially avoid link farms, webpages which contain more than 100 unrelated outgoing links, This type of link page is frowned upon by many major search engines. Avoid Webpages with mirror sites containing the exact same content with a different URL, also pages that utilize redirects and URL cloaking. Another way around this is to not separate my keywords with commas, just use spaces, and the Search Engines will make the phrases for you. The most important thing to remember is that the content of each page is different, so only use keywords pertaining to that page.

URL Text
When you name a new page you have the option to call it anything you could possibly think of, why not se a keyword? After all, the URL address is the first things a search engine comes across when indexing your pages. You have to remember content doesn't come easy to everyone, so you gotta slip in your keywords when the process gives you an easy one.

Description Meta tags
These tags are dwindling in importance since Search Engines are now looking at content, but every little bit counts.

Title Tags

Image Names
As I said before, content doesn't come easy to everyone, so slip in your keywords whenever possible, this applies to image names. If you are saving a picture of a guy working on a computer for your web design web site, don't call it "some_dude.jpg", call it "web_site_design.jpg". The Search engine will look at the code for the site and see the image pertains to the content of the site and this will be another relevant element on that particular page. You have to take the easy ones when you are given a chance.

ALT tags
Alt tags are keywords that you can attach to images, giving more weight to the image since Search Engines can't analyze the content of the image itself. Here is a chance to slip in more keywords without writing great content, use it.

Heading tags

As every expert will tell you, "Content is King." Each web page should have at least 350 words on it, and the more the better, but keep in mind the formula for keyword density. You don't want to fill a page with 1500 words of jibba-jabba and only 5 keywords in it. Some people get hung-up on how browsers display text, and use images with text in them because they want a cool font, but browsers can't read the text embedded in images, so this content ads no weight to the page in a Search Engines eyes.

Linkbaiting is the new trend among high ranking sites. Linkbaiting means writing quality content, or articles that other web sites can display on their pages as long as they give credit, and a link to your site.

You don't have to be a vi or emac expert to write good web content, just be thoughtful of how you word things and incorporate your keywords.

Hyperlinks
Hyperlinks are text links to other pages on your site. The rules of SEO and hyperlinks are easy:

• Use hyperlinks so the Search Engine will have a text link to follow to the next page
• Don't use one word links, use long link phrases, preferably keyword phrases
• Use bullets, or some sort of small image that you can attach an ALT tag to, this will ad more importance to the link, and throw in a couple of free keywords for you.
