DJOKOVIC DOWNS FEDERER - ROLAND GAROSS 2012

2012-06-08T19:11:00.001+02:00

Djokovic moved to within one victory of Grand Slam history Friday, crushing Roger Federer 6-4, 7-5, 6-3 to reach a first French Open final and a clash with six-time champion Rafael Nadal.

World number one Djokovic, who already has the Wimbledon, US Open and Australian Open titles in his possession, will become only the third man in history to hold all four Grand Slam trophies at the same time if he wins Sunday's final.

Defeat for Federer, the 2009 champion who was undone by 46 unforced errors, left him waiting once again to add to his record 16 majors, the last of which came at the 2010 Australian Open.

But Djokovic knows that Sunday's task will be even harder where Nadal, defeated only once in 52 matches at Roland Garros, is chasing his own piece of history as he tries to become the first man to win seven French Opens.

" I am happy to be in the final here, it's always difficult to play against Roger," said Djokovic, who had his 43-match winning streak ended by Federer at the same stage of Roland Garros 12 months ago.

" It's a dream to be in the final, but Rafa, who always plays so well here, will be the favourite. "

Both Djokovic and Federer had looked far from convincing in reaching this stage.

Nole came back from two sets to love down to beat Andreas Seppi in the fourth round before saving four match points against Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in a five-set quarter-final.

Federer had also been two sets to love down to Juan Martin del Potro in his five-set, last eight match before battling back.

In a tight opening set, Federer had the first break to lead 3-2 but couldn't capitalise when Djokovic hit straight back.

The Serb then served two love games to lead 5-4 before the first set was his when Federer mis-hit a forehand which ballooned beyond the tramlines.

But the Swiss edged the early break in the second set in a game which featured a gruelling 36-shot rally won by Federer with a volley off a Djokovic 'between the legs' shot.

The world number three held to love and broke again for 3-0.

Djokovic then capitalised on a sloppy Federer service game to break back at 1-3 and held for 2-3 before the third seed steadied for a 4-2 advantage.

The Serb, who had confidently defeated Federer in the semi-finals on clay in Rome in straight sets just last month, was under siege again in his next service game, saving three break points.

In a topsy-turvy set, Djokovic broke for 4-4 but allowed Federer back in the driving seat to lead 5-4.

But the 16-time Grand Slam title winner couldn't shake off the world number one who broke again in the 10th game, backed up by a hold for 6-5 and then claimed the set courtesy of a loose backhand and a wild forehand by the Swiss.

Djokovic was in the ascendancy now, breaking for 4-2 in the third and taking the match when Federer buried a backhand return into the net.

Defeat ended Federer's hopes making a 24th Grand Slam final.

Nole downs Tsonga - ROLAND GAROSS 2012

2012-06-06T23:00:00.000+02:00

Djokovic advanced into the Roland Garros last four on Tuesday with a hard-fought 6-1, 5-7, 5-7, 7-6 (6), 6-1 win over no.5 seed Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in 4 hours and 10 minutes on Court Phillipe Chatrier.
The first set was one-sided. Novak won it convincingly in just 21 minutes.
When he broke Tsonga to love with ease in the opening game of the second set and consolidated the break for 2-0 lead, it looked like he was in total control, but the home-crowd favourite made him work hard for the semi-final berth.
Novak handed Tsonga a break point in the eighth game with an unforced error and the Frenchman broke back to equalise the result to 4-4. Tsonga broke again in the 12th game to level up the match at one-set all.
Players exchanged breaks in the third set and then they both held until the 12th game. With the help of the French crowd Tsonga again made a crucial break to move 2-1 ahead.
Nole had break point opportunities in the fifth and ninth games of the fourth set, but the 27-year-old Le Mans native got out of trouble with powerful serving. Djokovic showed his heart of a champion when he saved four match points serving to stay in the match. He then took the set winning a tie-breaker 8-6 to level up the match at two-sets all.
The momentum was with Nole in the decisive fifth set. He made a double break and sealed the victory to keep his hopes for fourth straight major alive.
“ As a tennis player, this is what you live for,” said Djokovic. “This is what you practise for all these years, to be part of an incredible performance, incredible match. I’m really glad that I could win today. ”
Speaking of his ability to fight off four match points, Djokovic said: “ It’s, I guess, trying to be mentally tough and believing in your shots. Obviously a little bit of experience that I had playing on this level for last five, six years. I did have some matches similar to this one when I was match points down and managing to come back .”

Djokovic beat Haase - Monte Carlo 2012

2012-04-20T15:28:00.003+02:00

Djokovic - Haase 2:0 (6:4) (6:2) Congratulations!

Djokovic will play Berdych in the semi-finals of the Monte-Carlo Masters after defeating Robin Haase 6-4 6-2.

It took Djokovic little over an hour and 15 minutes as he ultimately made short work of his less illustrious opponent.

The world number one really failed to get firing in the first set. He was broken in the opening game of the match, retaliated with a couple of his own, but was again broken in the seventh as Haase brought it back to 4-4.

Novak faced another break point, but hit a vicious forehand winner to save and went on to hold then break the Dutchman's serve again courtesy of an easy put away at the net.

The point of the match was won by Djokovic at the start of the second as he recovered from a seemingly impossible position to finally get to the lob and pass the world number 55 on the turn.

Nole raced into a 4-0 lead, but it continued to be a strange performance as he squandered his own serve to love in the next game. Once again Djokovic broke, but yet again he dropped his serve for the fourth time in the match - when presented with a match point.

Haase only managed to hold serve twice in the entire match though and it was a straight forward task for Novak as a crunching return winner set up match point and he made no mistake.

Djokovic downs Stebe in Dubai

2012-02-27T12:30:00.000+01:00

Novak started quest for his fourth successive Dubai title with a straight sets victory over world no.72 Cedrik-Marcel Stebe at the " Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships " on Monday.

The world no.1 needed 88 minutes to eliminate the 21-year-old German 6-4, 6-2 and advance into the second round of the ATP World Tour 500 event.

Djokovic secured an early break of serve and took the opening set 6-4. He broke his opponent's serve twice in the second set, in the fifth and seventh games, and served it out 6-2.

" He definitely played well," said Djokovic after the match. "I was impressed with his game, especially in the first set. It could have gone a different way really, because he was returning well. He went on the court wanting to win, and that's the right attitude, I think. "

" I was really happy throughout the whole match the way I played. I really didn't have many downs in the game. He made me play it. He gave me good rhythm and went for his shots and made a lot of winners. Credit to him. I'm happy with the first match after four weeks definitely. "

This was Nole’s first match since winning his fifth Grand Slam title at the Australian Open with the epic victory over Rafa Nadal in 5 hours and 53 minutes in historic final. Defending his Dubai crown, the Serbian star is confident he can replicate the success he’s had in previous years at the event, which has seen him win the past three trophies.

He will next face the winner of the match between no.74 in the ATP rankings, Ukraine's Sergiy Stakhovsky, and Omar Awadhy from United Arab Emirates, which will be played on Tuesday.

Well, then, you can imagine how honored I feel right now to be entitled to hold this award, and to be called the World’s sportsman of the year. This award means a lot to me, my team, my family, and my fans around the world.
I will use this opportunity to thank the Laureus Foundation for doing a great job around the world. Sport is indeed an inspiration and motivation to many of us, the language we all understand and love.
I hope that my example can send a powerful message to all the kids around the world. I was also a kid who grew up in a poor country, torn apart with war, kid who dared to dream about becoming the world’s best athlete. World's media salutes Novak after historic Australian Open win!

2012-02-01T17:10:00.001+01:00

Here is the world's media reaction to Nole's super-human effort over Nadal in one of the most greatest Gran Slam finals ever!
" Djokovic pulls off miracle to win marathon battle "
The manner in which Djokovic withstood Nadal's passionate rally in the fourth set and came from 2-4 down in the fifth set, was incredible. Somehow, on jelly legs, Djokovic out-fought the game's greatest fighter to the final point. We started this tournament with talk of a Big Four or, more reasonably given Andy Murray remains a grand slam maiden, a Big Three. Surely, eventually, we finished with a Big One.
Richard Hinds, Sydney Morning Herald
" Victory cry: Djokovic wins Championship in epic thriller "
" The Serb relentlessly pounded Nadal's second serve to expose gaping holes in the Spaniard's defence to land his fifth major, joining Andre Agassi. Roger Federer and Mats Wilander as the only men to win three or more Australian crowns since 1968. In much the same way Nadal relishes his stroke-for-stroke match-up with Federer,Djokovic exerts a similar thrall over Nadal."
Leo Schlink, Australian Herald Sun
" Djokovic Superhuman "
He is the king of the circuit, the number 1 in the world, the true ruler of tennis right now.
David Menayo, Spain's Marca
" Djokovic tops Nadal in five sets "
It was not just the ticking clock or the grand occasion that made it special. It was the quality, both defensive and offensive, under duress, and though the strain was evident on their faces, above all Djokovic’s with his slightly vacant gaze, it was not nearly so evident once the ball was in play.
Christopher Clarey, New York Times
" Wizard of OZ "
Novak Djokovic ripped off his shirt and let out a primal scream, flexing his torso the way a prize fighter would after a desperate, last-round knockout.
This was the final act in Djokovic's victory over Rafael Nadal – a sweat-drenched, sneaker-squeaking 5 hour, 53-minute endurance contest that ended at 1:37 am Monday morning in Melbourne.
John Pye, Huffington Post

John Lloyd, former British number one & BBC Sport commentator: “ Incredible. The greatness we talked about last year but this match was the most important of Djokovic's career. To beat who he beat after playing Murray in the semi-final and being a break down in the fifth. The amount of respect he will have gained from the other players having gone toe-to-toe with Nadal with that level of exhaustion. Definitely the greatest match he's ever played. ”
Frew McMillan, a former professional male tennis player who was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in Newport, in 1992, now a tennis commentator for Eurosport, said : " He's got the heart of a superman and the mind of a genius. "
Jon Wertheim, SI.com: Novak Djokovic defends as champion, but that's the least of it. Winning two titanic battles in succession -- one over Andy Murray, and the absolute epic against Rafael Nadal -- completely re-frames his entire career. We keep talking about this golden age in men's tennis. What do we say about the man who has won four of the last five major events in this unparalleled era?
