Are you sick and tired of reading on some auction sites the following mis-leading information? "This item has been certified by 'bla, bla, bla' the premier autograph authentication company in the world. Their authentication is accepted and used by all the major auction houses and is an eBay approved authenticator."

If you know anything about autographs you already know anyone using a statement such as this is full of you know what. This is an immediate red flag for the item being auctioned.

The seller making this statement has to know the truth and they should be taken with a grain of salt.

Elvis' 'Mystery Lady' Draws Mob of Fans at Autograph Event

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - A kiss is just a kiss -- unless it's Elvis Presley you're kissing and you're backstage at the old Richmond Mosque and a photographer transforms the moment into an iconic image.

Then, more than 55 years later, you sit at a table at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, sign autographs -- lots and lots of photographs -- and soak in the adulation of Elvis fans on what would have been Presley's 77th birthday, as Barbara Gray did Jan. 7.

"We were just mobbed,'' Gray said afterward. "It blew my mind.''

As Elvis music played, a line snaked through the museum's atrium for more than two hours as people waited to meet Gray and have her sign books and pictures from the VMFA's "Elvis at 21'' exhibit. The books sold out. The four huge sheet cakes decorated with guitars in honor of Elvis' birthday? "I went to Martin's,'' said museum marketing director Bob Tarren, "and asked for cake for 400.'' It was gone in half an hour.

The 1956 picture by photographer Alfred Wertheimer of Presley "playfully romancing a blonde fan,'' as Vanity Fair writer Alanna Nash put it, is well-known. Gray, not so much, until she came forward last year and Nash revealed her identity.

Gray, 75, a retired real estate manager from Charleston, S.C., said family and close friends have known for years that she was the "mystery blonde'' and had urged her to go public.

"It wasn't important to me,'' Gray said. "It wasn't a big thing.''

Her fourth husband, Malcolm Gray, who accompanied her, finally persuaded her to let the world know.

In 1956, Gray was from Charleston, as she is now, and had spoken to Presley on the phone when he performed there. They agreed to meet two days later in Richmond, where Presley would be performing at the Mosque, now the Landmark Theater. (Gray actually has family in Richmond, including relatives who were resident caretakers of the property that has since become Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden.)

Presley sent a car to bring her to Richmond, where Wertheimer was chronicling Presley, then a rising star, and captured a number of photographs of the couple. Wertheimer never knew her name but identified her as Presley's "date for the day.'' After Richmond, Gray and Presley never met again.

At the museum, it was clear that since "The King,'' as Presley was known, couldn't make it -- he died in 1977 -- Gray was the next best thing.

"I'm so excited!'' squealed Terri Arroyo of Charlottesville, wearing an Elvis T-shirt and Elvis wristwatch and carrying an Elvis pocketbook as she ran around the table to hug Gray and have her picture taken with her.

"I love Elvis,'' Arroyo said a few minutes later, as she showed off the books and photographs she had Gray sign. "Oh, my gosh! I should have gotten her to sign my arm!''

J.D. Moore of Hopewell said he has been a "huge fan all my life'' of Elvis and asked Gray to sign a copy of the famous photo that had been used for a CD of Presley music that Moore had purchased several years ago, not knowing, of course, he would one day meet the woman in it.

"Was that cool or what?'' he said to a friend after posing for a picture with Gray

Linda Sadler of Richmond asked Gray to sign a book to her mother, Laura, who lives in Tennessee: "To one Elvis fan from another.''

"My mom and dad were big Elvis fans,'' Sadler said. Her mother is 88.

Gray said she stepped into the spotlight only for recognition and her place in history. She hasn't done it for the money. She sold a few prints made available to her by Wertheimer with proceeds going to a home for battered women managed by a granddaughter. Otherwise, she's just doing this for the fun of it.
"It was so great for my heart to know that people didn't just love Elvis, but they were really wanting to know who I was,'' she said.

Told that she seemed to make a lot of people happy at the museum, Gray said, "and they made me happy. It's very nice to be loved.'' - liveauctioneers

A placard reading “Bed Peace”, which was made by former Beatle John Lennon during his peace-in with wife Yoko Ono at a Canadian hotel, has fetched almost £100,000 at a London auction.

The sign, sold at Christie’s auction house on Tuesday, was bought by an anonymous telephone bidder for £97,250 ($153,835, 113,670 euros).

The iconic singer-songwriter made the placard in 1969 during his second week-long bed-in to protest the Vietnam War.

The demonstration took place in Montreal’s Queen Elizabeth Hoteland followed an earlier event during the couple’s honeymoon in Amsterdam.

Christie’s director Neil Roberts said: “We are thrilled with the results of the Rock and Pop Memorabilia sale which was led by pieces relating to important moments in the development of The Beatles.”

"These people are pretty hardcore. The fact that even one person camps out for this is unbelievable to me."

Actually, more than 1,400 Twi-hard campers have been waiting patiently. By the time the movie's young stars —Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner— walk down the red carpet, many fans will have waited for five days.

The pre-premiere vigil has become a tradition, and for the fourth film in the blockbuster franchise, the author felt compelled to leave her Arizona home early to finally check it out.

"I heard the stories about these kids, and it always sounds so amazing," Meyer says after hobnobbing with her faithful while passing out 600 autographed copies of Breaking Dawn. "So I decided I had to get into town for this."

Summit Entertainment, the movie's production studio, began to oversee the gatherings after the release of Twilight in 2008.

"We knew it was big and only going to get bigger," says Eric Kops, Summit's senior vice president of publicity.

Summit moved the 2010 premiere of Eclipse from suburban Westwood to its current location in downtown Los Angeles to accommodate the growing crowd.

"It's grown from something so small into something so huge," says Eloisa Aguayo, 26, of San Diego, who also camped out for New Moon and Eclipse.

Clutching Robert Pattinson fan magazines in plastic bags to shield them from the rain, she insists that though the crowds have grown, the camaraderie between fans has never changed.

"These people are like my family," she says. "No one even argues."

Those assembled embody the franchise's diverse reach. Though there is a predominance of girls, there is an abundance of Twilight moms, the odd Twilight dad and contingents from destinations as far away as Brazil and Australia.

Jay Tewake, 21, spent $1,200 for a ticket to fly 10,000 miles from Auckland, New Zealand. "It's definitely well worth it," he says after leading his tent neighborhood in rousing cheers, "if just to see everyone enjoying themselves."

The fans were treated to concerts from acts featured on the Breaking Dawn soundtrack, and a different Twilight film played on a giant screen each night. They'll also have a prime position for Monday night's event, when the stars arrive and walk down the carpet.

"Everyone should experience thousands of people screaming at you at the same time at least once," Pattinson said a week ago as he braced himself for the upcoming festivities.

"I try to lock down into this alter ego, where I just stay calm under any circumstances. It's an incredible experience." - usatoday

This fake passport for Adolf Hitler was made by the Special Operations Executive (SOE). The work of this group was to organize resistance in countries taken over by the Germans during the Second World War. After the war, examples of the documents they made were preserved to illustrate their work.

SOE relied on the use of undercover agents or spies. They sent nearly 500 agents into France alone. To assist these agents, SOE ran a forgery section that made fake documents ranging from passports to firearms licenses, travel permits and work passes. They often made use of the skills of counterfeiters and forgers recently released from prison.

This passport shows what the forgers were capable of producing. It also hints at their sense of humor and their opinion of Hitler and his beliefs. They've given Hitler's passport a red 'J' (which stood for 'Jew' on a German passport). He has a visa allowing his entry into Palestine, which was under British control at that time. Clayton Morar - If you missed out on the news about me getting the autograph of U2 frontman, Bono, in person in Cape Town - well here's a small insight as to how things happened.

Bono was in town this past month for an unannounced visit to spend a few days with Archbishop Desmond Tutu and feast his 80th birthday with Tutu and his close friends and family in Cape Town.

When I heard from a friend that Bono was spotted in Cape Town, I immediately found out details about his whereabouts and where he'd be in Cape Town over the next few days.

With the news that Bono would be attending a church service at St George's Cathedral in the Cape Town CBD, my friend Maya and I, plotted carefully as to how we'd get to the church with the hope of not only meeting him, but also getting a photo with him.

Well to our surprise at least 150 people were waiting outside the church to catch a glimpse of Bono and the Tutu guests at the church service, and after at least 25 minutes of waiting outside the church, Bono came outside with his wife Alison Hewson and greeted the media and fans.

It's in this moment that Maya and I managed to outwit, outsmart and outhink the dozens of cameras and fans, and managed to get up close and personal - with him signing an autograph for my collection.

Upon approaching him, there was obviously quite a bit of security around the legendary singer, but he was very gracious and clam, and did stop to sign an autograph or two and even took a photo with a fan - before getting into his getaway car!

He was very down-to-earth and greeted my "Excuse me Bono, can I have your autograph?" approach with a gentle yet affirming "Sure, no problem!" response.

I expected to be dealt with some diva behaviour, but not the case at all! Bono is a legend in the music industry and definitely one in my books for being so laid back and enthusiastic with his fans! It was indeed a BEAUTIFUL DAY!

Gaddafi Had a "Pen Pal" in Brooklyn

How many 81-year-old retired Jewish florists in Brooklyn were pen pals with Col. Muammar Gaddafi? At least one: Louis Schlamowitz.

The New York Post published a story Monday in which Schlamowitz, who has made writing to world leaders something of a hobby, calls the former Libyan dictator "a good pen pal."

“I felt it was very nice of him to take the time to write back to me, because I’m nobody special," Schlamowitz said.

Schlamowitz says he first wrote to Gaddafi in 1969, after he took power in Libya.

“I wished him well and congratulated him on being the new leader of Libya, hoping for many more years ahead of him,” Schlamowitz said. “At end of letter, I said I’d be very grateful if he would send a personal picture of himself to add to my Middle East collection.”

A month later, he got an autographed photograph in the mail and a note of thanks for the "kind message."

Schlamowitz started sending Gaddafi Christmas cards. In 1981, the pair traded thoughts on Israel. Then, in 1988, after the Lockerbie bombing, Schlamowitz stopped writing to Gaddafi. But six months ago, after the uprising in Libya began, Schlamowitz wrote to check in. The letter was returned unopened.

“I felt bad about how he was slaughtered," Schlamowitz told the Post. "They really gave him the one-two-three. But that’s politics.”

The New York Times offered some more details on Schlamowitz's many correspondences with the powerful. He has signed letters or photographs from Hosni Mubarak, Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, Bashar al-Assad, and Yasir Arafat, plus "Harry S. Truman, every living Supreme Court justice, every astronaut who walked on the moon, scores of movie stars, several popes, and John F., Robert F. and Edward M. Kennedy."

His exploits have garnered him attention from all sorts of media outlets over the years. And the CIA and the FBI have both paid him visits over the years. He told the Times he showed them his closet full of autographs.

If someone wants an autograph from Selena Gomez, at least know her name. Talk about making a strong statement! Did Selena wake-up on the wrong side of the bed this morning causing her to be grumpy? If she wasn't before this incident, she certainly is now.

Want a good way to annoy Justin Bieber's girlfriend? One doesn't have to look any further than this Twitter post, as Selena Gomez is now in Cleveland, Ohio for a concert:

Ever since the invention of EBay, the buying and selling of celebrity autographs has exploded. Marketable autographs from music, movies, television, politics, and sports have become a multi-billion dollar industry.

Obviously autographs of the hottest stars command the biggest price tag. So, one could reasonably expect since Selena Gomez is a star and she is dating Justin Bieber, her signature would be worth a pretty penny.

The funny thing here is that the autograph seeker had no clue about who they were asking for an autograph, just that this person was "famous." Ok, the economy is down, people are desperate to make a quick buck, but to not know Selena's name as an autograph seeker lands somewhere between absurd and flat-out ignorant.

Good for Selena Gomez, calling this guy out on Twitter. He gets exactly what he deserves. Sadly, it won't stop him from obnoxiously asking the next celebrity for an autograph to make a quick buck. - gather
