Father Son PX flight

Two Air Niugini pilots have made history when they operated their first commercial flight together as father and son on Friday 1st February 2019. Read more --- http://giaman.com/s/qr

It was a proud moment for First Officer (FO), Christian Yates Round and Captain Mark Yates Round when the father – son duo proudly operated PX 208 on a Fokker 70 aircraft from Port Moresby to Lae, then Hoskins, Rabaul and back to Port Moresby. Following that, they also operated PX 244 that same afternoon from Port Moresby to Hoskins where the aircraft stayed over-night – this particular flight was made even more special, with Mrs Jernin Yates Round joining her husband and son as a passenger on the flight.

Legal action against PX

Legal action has been taken against Air Niugini by Law firm Berman O'Connor & Mann on behalf of a passenger aboard Air Niugini Flight 73 that crash landed in the waters short of the runway on the 28th of September 2018 in the Federated States of Micronesia near Chuuk International Airport in Weno.

Rigo Cultural Festival

The first Governor of the Bank of Papua New Guinea passed away at the end of October 2019.

Sir Henry ToRobert, KBE, from East New Britain Province, served the Bank from October 22nd, 1973 to July 30th, 1993. He was one of the longest serving Governors in the Commonwealth of Nations. He oversaw the growth and development of central banking in the formative years leading up to and after PNG gained independence in 1975.

He established the Bank of Papua New Guinea as a reputable institution in managing the financial affairs of the newly independent nation.

During his term, the country’s currency (Kina and Toea) was introduced in 1975 and a new Bank Building was opened in 1991 and named after him.

Now Bentleys for APEC

Papua New Guinea has reportedly added three Bentleys to its controversial fleet of luxury cars purchased for the upcoming APEC leaders’ summit in November.

Papua New Guineans reacted with outrage to the news that the PNG government had bought 40 Maseratis for the summit despite the country struggling with a nationwide polio outbreak, increased rates of tuberculosis and chronic funding shortages for health, education and other services.

My name is Donna Harvey-Hall and I have always loved kids. I had five daughters of my own and I took on the responsibility of an additional 7 children and the short-term responsibility for many others.

I must admit it would have been easier had I not been widowed at 37 under quite tragic circumstances but God provided me with a very resilient spirit and we all soldiered on. PNG is a very harsh and often cruel country and I have been twice widowed and have lost 3 of my children all in very sad and tragic circumstances. The community I lived amongst have been very supportive of our family business and I have a lot to thank them for- one of the reasons I stayed amongst them when it would have been easier to retreat back behind a security fence and then return to Australia where I had been born.

Life in the so-called First World is easy and my Australia is a wonderful place but we must not lose sight of the fact that we are all just a catastrophe or two away from being poor or even being homeless.

PNG people are just the same as people anywhere else in the world and PNG children are very endearing and not the slightest bit interested in having the latest Barbie doll or PlayStation game. Life for them is much simpler and in most cases just boils down to basic survival and to somehow manage to have enough food in your stomach to keep the pain at bay.

Hunger is not something we ever fully experience in the western world but I am told it is a very painful experience.

Throughout the course of my life of running a business as a single mother and providing for my family I involved myself in the community and have held many public positions and served upon many boards-something not often done by women in PNG, or not by expatriates.

Having said that, I must emphasise that there are many emerging strong spirited, Christian and professional PNG women who are meeting the 21st century with a superior education and are very high achievers in their own right. PNG people, when given an opportunity are making their mark, spreading across the world and achieving high positions. Sadly, because of low wages and inferior living conditions they are not choosing to return to PNG and this is understandable.

We all want a better life for our children. This is what civilisation is all about.

Economic necessity forced me into the business world and economic necessity kept me there for far too long. Only now am I able to realise my dream and fulfil my commitment to PNG children and to my community in Wau and to establish my project which will provide a home for orphaned or disadvantaged children-my Haus Pikinini.

I do not feel comfortable referring to my project as an orphanage as I feel there is a stigma involved and I would like the children to feel they are living in a home more than an institution. I want them to consider their carers and myself to be their family and I do not find it at all difficult to show love and compassion to children that are not biologically my own. Fortunately I am supported by many like-minded friends.

We have already opened since early June 2017 and I am now in PNG working upon what we will need and putting plans into place for the selection of children, many of whom have been unofficially identified by my people on the ground. I will also be seeking the assistance of the relevant Government agencies for licensing and IRC for tax relief as a Not-for-Profit organisation.

Malaria Increase in PNG

According to a recent report by the Papua New Guinea Institute of Medical Research (PNGIMR) malaria cases in PNG have increased almost ninefold between 2014 and 2017.

If you look at another report - http://giaman.com/s/qj - you will see down at the bottom under "Key Messages" PNG experienced a >400% increase in malaria cases in 2016 - partly due to inadequate access to services and improved surveillance.

Another vice-Chancellor bites the dust

When Professor John Warren left Wales to take up his new academic role two years ago at the University of Natural Resources and Environment in Papua New Guinea he believed he had found the job of his dreams.

Since then he has found the life of a vice-Chancellor can be traumatic and he discovered the perils of trying to rid the institution of cheating. And it culminated in him being threatened with jail by a colleague and being told to “get out of there” before fleeing under cover of the night to fly to Australia.

HMAS Curlew | Royal Australian Navy

The Curlew served Australia for 28 years – clearing Second World War mines from the waters around Papua New Guinea. The Curleew was built in 1953 in Scotland by the Montrose Ship Building Company as a minesweeper, and accepted into the Royal Navy as HMS Chediston.

She was later renamed HMS Montrose and used by the Tay Division of the Royal Navy Volunteer Reserve from August 1955 to October 1957.

The ship was then placed in storage until the 1960s, when the Royal Australian Navy bought her and converted her into the service’s first mine-hunter as the renamed Curlew.

Curlew steamed more than 400,000 nautical miles in 40,000 hours at sea before she was finally decommissioned in April 1990.

The global trade war between China and Western powers has reached new heights in the Pacific and in particular, in Papua New Guinea.

Former PNG Defence Force Commander, Major General Jerry Singirok, says any decision by the Australians to place troops in Papua New Guinea must have a wide consultation, as well as debate in parliament.

A possible Australian presence in Manus means they get to police the northern region. The move places Papua New Guinea in the center of a global power struggle between the US and its allies and China.

Papua Besena revived

Papua New Guinea has reached the highest international security alert of Level 4 as one of the world’s “no-go-zone” countries.

PNG is now among North Korea, Yemen, Iran, Iraq and Syria that the United Kingdom and United States have placed a Level 4 alert on. Kari Wins Again

Gold Medalist from the previous Commonwealth Games - PNG weightlifter Steven Kari - has won gold in the 94kg category at the current Games. Canadian opponent Boady Santavy had to settle for silver and was not happy basically losing the plot backstage.
