He said: "I am convinced we have good potential, we have rebuilt the team and of course we were a bit disturbed at the start of the season for different reasons. But we just want to focus on the short term at the moment, we are not in a position to make long-term plans.

"You can never say that the confidence is at the top when you lose a big game, but we still believe in the way we play and want to behave.

"We had a good series of results just before we lost to Tottenham and from that game I think there were many positives. We have to respond quickly now because there is a big gap between us and the top teams and we want to reduce that as quickly as possible.

"I believe that this team will surprise many once we get on a series of results because the behaviour is fantastic.''

Wenger also refused to rule out Nicklas Bendtner, currently on loan with Sunderland and ineligible to play against the Gunners, from playing for Arsenal again.

"In our job, you never say never,'' said Wenger. "You do always what is right for your club. If it is right for the club to get Nicklas Bendtner back, the club will do it. I like him as a player.

"It will not only depend on us, it will depend on him. But we are not there yet - there is a long way to go.''

Bendtner's absence could present an opportunity to summer signings Connor Wickham, who has recovered from a groin problem, and Ji Dong-won.

But Hodgson said: "The players performed excellently for most of the time after I came into the club but we were poor that day at Molineux.

"There haven't been many games where we have put in a performance which was totally disappointing or we've found hard to accept or come to terms with.

"The one at Molineux would certainly be a good example and there have been a couple recently where we could have done better.

"The players would be the first to tell you the game at Molineux was far from what we should have been doing.

"That's part of the battle in some ways because at least, when people know, then you have at least got a chance to put it right and, as a coach, it means you are often preaching to the converted.''

Hoddgson is aware of the increased importance of the game.

He said: "I've got a feel for the rivalry. It is fierce and, for both teams, it's a big game because we are both at the wrong end of the table.

"They started like a house on fire but have since had major setbacks. We started with three defeats but have since taken five points from four games.

"It's two teams who need a result and two teams who will be going hell for leather to get that result. I don't think either team will let their fans down.

"It's our second season in the Premier League, their third, and is vitally important for both clubs to stop in this division.

"We believe we have the wherewithal to win the game. We know how much it will mean to our fans.''

Wolves striker Steven Fletcher has been ruled out with a calf injury suffered in training.

It leaves Kevin Doyle as the only fully fit experienced striker, with Sylvan Ebanks-Blake not match-fit after a two month lay-off following a knee setback.

Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp has conceded the highly-anticipated derby with Arsenal this weekend has distracted his focus slightly from Thursday's Europa League Group A match against Shamrock Rovers.

Last year`s meeting between the two at White Hart Lane ended in a 3-3 draw, and talk has been building about the latest chapter of the rivalry.

Odense BK coach Henrik Clausen does not believe Fulham's indifferent Premier League form will hamper them in Thursday's Europa League tie.

The Cottagers have endured a frustrating start to the season and have yet to secure a top-flight victory since Martin Jol's appointment in the summer.

While the west Londoners are on an eight-game winless streak in all competitions, Clausen expects a tough match in Denmark.

"You can always ask whether they lack confidence or not,'' he told Press Association Sport.

"Looking at the latest results from Fulham they have not won but they have not lost for like a month.

"I think that is something that normally gains stability and makes a good platform for making confidence so I am not sure they are without confidence.

"I think we are more focused on ourselves.

Udinese coach Francesco Guidolin hit back at critics who claim he is disrespecting Celtic and the Europa League by bringing a second-string squad to Glasgow for Thursday night's Group I encounter at Parkhead.

The Italian club arrived at Celtic Park for training on Wednesday night without a recognised first-team striker with Guidolin claiming he left Italy international Antonio Di Natale behind because he is "tired", while Paulo Barreto and Antonio Floro Flores are both reportedly injured.

Indications were that 21-year-old attacking midfielder Diego Fabbrini is set to back up Almen Abdi, a midfielder who will be asked to play the lone-striker's role.

The only attacker who travelled is 17-year-old Davide Marsura who will start on the bench while Christian Battocchio, 19, and Mattia Bedin, 17, could start in a youthful five-man midfield.

Guidolin revealed he had holidayed in the Highlands four months ago to get "away from the hustle and bustle'' of life.

However, he looked less than relaxed when questioned about his inexperienced squad by the Italian and Scottish media at the pre-match press conference at Parkhead and bristled in reply.

"My choices are logical,'' he said. "If anyone doesn't like it then tough.

"It is a question of necessity. I just don't have any other attackers available.

"I would have brought everyone along but many of the squad are very tired.

"It is a problem for us but it would have been a problem if Di Natale had travelled. He would have only played some of the game.

"What the people in Italy are saying isn't really important, the choice of players I have brought has been well thought out, it wasn't a decision I reached quickly.

"Di Natale has played four games in 15 days and if he were here I couldn't expect great things from him.

"These are choices that have been forced upon me.

Brugge also opened their account with a victory - 2-0 over Maribor - and Jardim is eager to open up some daylight at the head of the standings by stifling the visitors' attacking instincts.

"It's a team that has a type of game similar to the Dutch,'' said Jardim.

"They have a lot of support with many players participating in offensive actions, and we must counter this by imposing heavy pressure and the Braga style of play.''

The win over Birmingham was Braga's best ever win on the road in UEFA competition, but it is at home that they traditionally thrive, with an unbeaten European record at the Estadio Municipal stretching back seven games.

Austria Vienna assistant coach Sepp Michorl has completed a thorough assessment of Thursday's Europa League Group G opponents Malmo and believes his side have what it takes to claim victory.

Michorl was sent on a factfinding mission to Sweden to run the rule over Malmo last week and has reported back to head coach Karl Daxbacher with some detailed feedback.

Both sides had disappointing results in the first group fixtures, with AZ Alkmaar seeing off Malmo 4-1 and Vienna beaten 2-1 at home by Metalist Kharkiv.

"They (Malmo) go with a classic 4-4-2 system, they are tactically very disciplined and make few mistakes,'' Michorl told www.fk-austria.at.

"After losing possession, the team moves immediately behind the ball and presses.

"I would guess we are stronger defensively and maybe Malmo are a little better going forward but if we play to our potential then we have good chances to succeed in Sweden.''

Michorl has also picked out key men for the Swedes, with the wing duo of Jiloan Hamad and Jimmy Durmaz and striker Ranegie Mattias catching his eye.

"Both winger are very fast and strong when they go one on one, but sometimes they can forget their defensive duties.

"On good days the pair can create a lot of danger. Mattias only arrived in the middle of August from Hacken and has already taken four goals in six games. He can look a little awkward but that is his playing style and he shields the ball cleverly. he is always good for a goal.''

Malmo coach Richard Norling is eager to get a response from his side after their heavy defeat in Holland.

He knows home advantage and the lesser stature of Vienna mean a repeat of that scoreline is unlikely, but is expecting a tough workout.

"At this level, all teams are good, that much is clear to us,'' he said.

"While there is obviously a big difference between facing Alkmaar away and Austria Vienna at home, it is still a really good team that comes here.

Inter Milan coach Gian Piero Gasperini has demanded an immediate response from his players when they begin their Champions League group campaign against Trabzonspor at the San Siro tomorrow.

Gasperini was left angry and disappointed with his side's 4-3 defeat at Palermo in Sunday's Serie A opener.

"It's obvious that after our performance at Palermo, we need to correct certain things,'' Gasperini said. "We lacked balance and we made huge mistakes against them.

"We will try to make sure we don't repeat those mistakes tomorrow.''

Inter have won just one of their last five opening games in the Champions League and Gasperini hopes to change that trend.

"There's only one acceptable result for us tomorrow against Trabzonspor,'' Gasperini said.

"We will try to get a win while also producing a good performance in front of our home fans.''

Gasperini has warned his players not to underestimate tournament debutants Trabzonspor who finished runners-up in last season's Turkish league.

"Trabzonspor are a good team,'' he said. "We have watched their recent games.

"In the Champions League every game is difficult.

"We cannot take this game lightly and think it will be easy to beat them.

"Trabzonspor have quality and speed.

"Despite their absences, they are a tough team to beat.''

Trabzonspor travel to Milan on the back of a 1-1 draw to Mansaspor in their Super Lig opener.

The visitors are without attacking pair Burak Yilmaz and Adrian Mierzejewski, both suspended.

To complicate matters for the Turks, coach Senol Gunes will serve his first of a two-match touchline ban tomorrow.

Gasperini is set to hand Dutch winger Wesley Sneijder a place in the starting XI, with new summer signing Diego Forlan ineligible to play in the group stages of the competition.

Sneijder, who came off the bench in the loss to Palermo, is set to play in support of Argentinian forward Diego Milito.

The hosts will be without Cristian Chivu, Ivan Cordoba, Maicon, Thiago Motta and Emiliano Viviano, all sidelined through injury.

One of the most competitive Champions League groups gets under way tomorrow with Villarreal hosting Bayern Munich in a game that both sides are keen to win, but equally keen not to lose.

While the Spaniards, who finished fourth in La Liga last season, host Germany's record champions, who finished a disappointing third in the Bundesliga, the group's other two participants Manchester City and Napoli will be locking horns in England.

With little to choose between all four clubs as they take their places in the starting blocks, avoiding a false start is a priority.

"Spanish football is the best that Europe has to offer at the moment,'' said Bayern's chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge to reporters before Munich flew out to Valencia today.

"We know that the final takes place in Munich and we have got to pay attention that such a dream does not turn into a nightmare.

"We need to concentrate to ensure that we don't experience any setback.''

The prospect of taking part - and winning - the final in their own stadium is the driving force behind Bayern's motivation while Villarreal are just keen to enjoy the occasion alongside three of European football's giants.

"Playing in this competition is the biggest stimulus a footballer could have nowadays,'' said their coach Juan Carlos Garrido.

"We know that we have been dealt a difficult group with three of the best sides in the world right now, but this is the Champions League.

"We face three clubs who attract an immense media interest and with players from the highest level.

"For Villarreal, it is magnificent to be able to play in this competition against teams with such history.

"Playing against Bayern is a great motivation.''

However, Garrido insists his side will not only be making up the numbers tomorrow night.

"We are going to have to fight for every ball and get the fans on our side,'' he added.

"We know that they are a good team and we are going to have to work very hard because this is a crucial game.

"To keep the three points would be a major coup and it would make our intentions clear that we can qualify.''

A 2-2 draw with Sevilla saw Villarreal get their first point of the season in La Liga at the weekend while Bayern warmed up for tomorrow night's clash with a 7-0 win over Freiburg.

However, their coach Jupp Heynckes is reading little into that victory.

Although that emphatic result will have "given us a boost'', Heynckes has warned tomorrow's opponents will certainly provide a much sterner test.

"European games cannot be compared with the Bundesliga,'' he said.

Bayern will be without Arjen Robben, whose groin injury is proving to be more problematic than first feared.

It is likely Heynckes will name the same starting XI as he did on Saturday with in-form Mario Gomez, who has scored seven goals in his last two games, leading the attack with Franck Ribery and Thomas Muller in support.

Garrido is without the suspended Borja Valero, who was sent off in the qualifying match against Odense, while Cristian Zapata is also part of the squad after missing the Sevilla game due to a late return from international duty with Colombia.

Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini is excited by his Champions League challenge but expects the group stage to prove tough.

City make their eagerly-anticipated first appearance in Europe's elite club competition tomorrow as they host Italian side Napoli, who finished third in Serie A last season.

With German giants Bayern Munich and Spaniards Villarreal also alongside them in Group A, Mancini believes his side have their work cut out despite their outstanding form this season.

The Italian said: "I think it is an exciting day for the club.

"To play in the Champions League after many years is very important, it is a special day.

"But I think we took the harder route in the Champions League.

"In this group there are four teams who can win the group or finish in fourth position. It will be very hard for every team.''

Few teams can have entered the Champions League for the first time with so much expected of them.

After three years of heavy investment, City are on a mission to establish themselves as one of the continent's top clubs and their performances this term suggest they can make a big impact.

Mancini is comfortable with such expectation and, with plenty of Champions League experience in his squad, does not believe players will be burdened by pressure either.

He said: "I think this is normal for us.

"Now Manchester City are one of the best teams in England and Europe.

"For us it will be very important to do our job very well in this group.

"Tomorrow is the first game - the first game is always a difficult game.

"Napoli are a good team, last year they did very well in the Italian championship.

"Several of their players have been capped for their national teams and (Walter) Mazzarri is a very experienced manager.

"I expect Napoli to be a challenge but a lot of our players have played in the Champions League and I don't think they will feel pressure for this game.''

While City are playing in Europe's top club competition for the first time since the 1968-69 season, Napoli are also enjoying a resurgence of their own.

The Partenopei, who last played at this level in 1990-91, were promoted back to Serie A in 2007 and have finished sixth and third since Mazzarri took charge two years ago.

Mazzarri, 49, said: "I live in Naples and can see how people feel.

"It is our fifth year back in Serie A. Now we are getting into the Champions League and not through the back door.

"The players have done a lot to bring the team to this level. Both the technical staff and I are very proud.''

Napoli's last visit to England ended in disappointment, however, after Steven Gerrard struck a late hat-trick in a 3-1 Europa League defeat at Liverpool 10 months ago.

Michael Ballack today admitted he would forever be haunted by Chelsea's Champions League final loss to Manchester United but was ready to inflict more misery on his former club tomorrow night.

Ballack is set to play at Stamford Bridge for the first time since leaving the Blues just over a year ago when Bayer Leverkusen begin their Group E campaign against the Blues.

The 34-year-old has the unique honour of being the only man to play in the biggest game in both clubs' history, inspiring Leverkusen to the 2002 Champions League final before starting for Chelsea in the 2008 showpiece.

Unfortunately, the midfielder ended up on the losing side on both occasions, but it was perhaps the penalty shootout heartache in Moscow that was the more difficult defeat to take, with Ballack today saying: "It will haunt all of us for ever.''

Former Germany captain Ballack, who turns 35 this month, will receive a special presentation from Chelsea in recognition of his four years' service before kick-off tomorrow night.

He said: "The presentation is a very nice gesture and it will be a very emotional moment for me tomorrow.

"There are still a few players there and some who left in the meantime who I am still friends with and whom I am still in touch with, and also a few of the staff.

"When I moved to Chelsea, it was a big, big challenge and experience for me at the time to play with so many good players.

"If I look back, I had a very good time. I feel always welcomed by the fans and the club. They treat me always very well and we had success.

"We missed a few chances, but we had some successes and I will remember this always and it is a big part of my career.''

Bundesliga runners-up Leverkusen will be underdogs tomorrow but Ballack said: "It is just a game of football, although we are aware there are some big names on the other side.

"We will have our chances.''

Chelsea boss Andre Villas-Boas may not field his first-choice XI with Sunday's Barclays Premier League trip to Old Trafford on the horizon.

"You'll see some changes tomorrow. Then we'll make wise decisions for Sunday,'' said Villas-Boas, whose big decision once again revolves around whether or not to select Fernando Torres.

Daniel Sturridge certainly did enough to start alongside or instead of the misfiring Spaniard in Saturday's Barclays Premier League win at Sunderland, although Villas-Boas was reluctant to lavish praise on the 22-year-old.

He said: "He had a three-game ban and has just returned, and he had motivation to have an impact in that game. It was the team, also, who made him perform to that level.''

Didier Drogba will miss tomorrow's game as he continues his recovery from his sickening head injury.

"We're going to try to make a good start and be balanced in defence and attack. Right now, they are the team playing the best football, they have the highest quality - both individually and as a team - but we have our own quality, we're a good team.

"There will be a lot of attention on the match and we must have great respect for Barcelona. But we have qualities to make it a good football game.

"We'll go with peace of mind. Tomorrow is not a final, it's the first game of the round. It's against a team who have recently won a lot but our goal is to go through.''

Asked about Zlatan Ibrahimovic's return to the Nou Camp following his bittersweet spell in 2009-10, Allegri said: "He's proved himself and he's proving he can be a champion on the big stage.''

Allegri confirmed he will make changes from the side which drew 2-2 with Lazio in Friday's Serie A opener and will choose between Antonio Cassano and Alexandre Pato to partner Ibrahimovic up front.

Makeshift Barcelona defender Sergio Busquets has urged his Barcelona team-mates to use tomorrow's match to bounce back from Saturday's league disappointment.
