Here's what SeaMicro has done with its box: popped 512 x 1.6 GHz Intel x86 CPUs on a rack, which equates to 2,048 CPUs per rack with 1 Terabyte of DRAM, a 1.28 Terabit networking fabric and up to 64 1Gigabit Ethernet ports or 16 10GigE ports. Customers can add up to 64 solid state drives for storage and the whole box takes up 10 racks and consumes less than 2 kilowatts of power.

Salt Lake City: A pedestrian injured by a motorist while following an online route has filed a lawsuit claiming Google Inc. supplied unsafe directions.

Rosenberg used her phone in January to download directions from one end of Park City to the other. Google Maps led her to a four-lane boulevard without sidewalks that was "not reasonably safe for pedestrians," according to the lawsuit filed by the Northridge, California, resident.

Rosenberg believed she could reach a sidewalk on the other side of Deer Valley Drive and tried to cross the boulevard, but didn't even make it to the median, he said.

She was struck by a speeding car on a pitch-black night and received multiple bone fractures that required six weeks of rehabilitation, Young added.

Google Wave Use Case

Last month we wrote a short post about using Google Wave for live blogging. Today, during Mark Zuckerberg's Facebook privacy press conference, we decided to put this theory into practice and live blogged the event with Wave. The reaction to our experiment was overwhelmingly positive, so we decided to share how we it up for our live blogging session today.

Lessons Learned
Here are a few things we learned today:

Wave worked like a charm. We did not experience any hiccups and our readers were very happy about seeing us type the updates in real time - live blogging really doesn't get more "live" than this. Having Google's infrastructure as the basis for your live blog definitely helps when you have lots of people hitting your blog at the same time.

Adding a few extra people to Wave allows you to share the workload. If possible, have at least one extra person around to create and upload screenshots. We used a Skype backchannel during the event to coordinate in the background, but you could also use a second Wave for this.

A Few Things to Keep in Mind

The default font size in the Wave embed is too small, and changing it for every new wavelet takes too long. Hopefully Wave will soon allow us to set a slightly larger font size as the default.

Wave didn't work well for Safari users and is obviously also still an issue for Internet Explorer.

Uploading screenshots to Wave is easy, just click on the attachments icon, pick the desired image and hit submit. Sadly, you can't just drag and drop images from your desktop onto your browser (yet), so having a second person to manage that is helpful.

Spell checking in Wave is still a bit difficult even when you have a second person edit your posts.

I think this one is a fake, look at the domain name. The root domain redirects to some other site.
But otherwise Google has some Adwords or Adsense certification. I'd read some people claiming to have that certification.

Have you ever found yourself ignoring the directions of your car's GPS in order to get somewhere faster or more efficiently than it can calculate?

Startups make similar diversions, but the directions they are straying from are those of a product roadmap. Roadmaps are projected out for months, if not years, to give a company a strategy to most effectively grow its product. But just as there are reasons we ignore our GPS, there are reasons for startups to alter their roadmap. If startups come up with a product roadmap and proceed to put their heads in the sand while they follow it unwaveringly, they will more than likely fail.

I have worked with, and for many Indians, and the best ones are among the best engineers I have known.

More than half the people that go into CS here in the states are doing it because it's their passion. On the other hand, I believe the vast majority of people who go into CS in India are doing it for a bigger pay check. Neither are doing anything wrong, but when you mix people who have passion with people just showing up for a pay check, obviously the one's with passion are going to have some negative views of the others.

I don't think anyone is saying that there aren't good Indian developers. I have met some really awesome Indian developers who ranked with any American developers I've run across. Most of them went to school abroad, and others had been working outside India since the 90's.

I think there are a few issues:

Native Indian developers have not had sufficient time to develop the experience and confidence required to be great, yet.
Quite a few of the workers in India do not have the passion to be great.
It appears that the focus in the Indian colleges is on engineering and not science.
Good Indian developers are NOT getting the recognition they deserve, even in India! (The culture that you must be promoted into Mgmt, or you are bad at your job thing)

If you add all this up, good Indian workers are being drowned out by their inexperienced and unpassionate peers.

All the American companies I've worked with challenge their clients when their requirements are vague or they aren't taking enough ownership in the project, because they have as much to loose as their clients. I don't think you can say that, because the client failed, the project failed. It usually requires both parties to fail.

Please don't take this personally, as I think you and I are in agreement, but I want to get this "out there" and this is as good a place as any.

At a former job, I worked with a number of Indians; some H1B contractors, some with green cards & working as full-time employees of the company, some as outsource/offshored resources. They fell into 2 general categories:

1) Agree to everything, always say "ok" to everything, even if (especially if) they don't understand. Then come back and ask the same question. Over and over and over again. Always saying "ok" but never actually understanding. Handed a 30-page document, they'll ask questions that are answered in plain English on page 5, clearly demonstrating that they haven't even glanced at the documentation.

2) Agree to take on tasks, but ask follow-up questions for clarification when something doesn't make sense, or isn't explained well.

I'm sure that this happens with outsourced developers regardless of nationality and location, but I think most peoples' (my own included) experience is mainly with those in/from India.

Group #1 is the group that makes me not want to work with companies outsourced to India. Is there a strong culture of "asking a question or saying you don't full understand is a sign of weakness, so never do it"? How does this get reconciled against the image that it projects of a developer who promises everything and is capable of delivering nothing?

I have much more respect for someone who says to me "I don't quite understand, can you explain this differently for me?" than someone who says "ok, I got it" to my face, and then a week later has taken no action/made no progress because they in fact did not understand at all.

However, they may wish - it will be very difficult for FB and MS to give Google a competition. More so by making the service "invitation only" is going to cost much dearer and I am sure the move could even boomerang!

Invitation only works if your launching a new (read:novel) service - not if you are simply rehashing an old service already provided by others. Many would give the GMail example - but dude GMail was not just an email - it was (when launched) the first 1GB mailbox (so it was novel in that sense).
