Mesothelioma is a disease caused by exposure to the asbestos dust. The most unfortunate aspect of this disease is that its symptoms do not appear soon enough or within a short enough time after exposure to the asbestos dust. This complicates matters because when the symptoms finally appear, in most cases, they are not associated with the disease. It takes very long time, sometimes even decades, for the symptoms to appear in form of obdurate cough, shortness of breath and chest pain. Initially, the unsuspecting patient and even his family physician associate these symptoms with common diseases like pneumonia. It is when the disease starts spreading to other organs of the body that the doctors apprehend and tend to trace the origin of the symptoms of this life-threatening condition.

The other symptoms that appear are weight loss, breathing difficulty, fever and difficulty in swallowing food. The voice pattern may also change and the cough may be accompanied by blood; there also may be swelling on the neck and face.

Other symptoms can be in the form of pain in the abdomen, loss of appetite, nausea, palpitation of the heart and vomiting. There may also be anemia and clotting of the blood. The best course of action is that a person should inform the doctor about any regular or inadvertent and short exposure to asbestos dust. Even acute symptoms of mesothelioma may be mistakenly associated with other diseases.

There are, however, some patients who do not show any important symptoms at all. Tumors may develop around the heart and can spread to other parts of the body. As the time passes and the disease grows older, the symptoms of all the three types of mesothelioma—pleural, peritoneal and pericardial—start appearing in more vigorous form. Even at this stage, the symptoms are likely to be confused with other diseases. It is important not to ignore symptoms that continue to persist over a long time. It is also necessary to know the symptoms of all the three forms of mesothelioma so that the disease can be identified in the nascent stage. The delay in identifying these symptoms may allow the disease to take firm roots in the system, and then it may become too late to treat it.

Mesothelioma can either be malignant (cancerous) or benign (non-cancerous) in nature. Mesothelioma affects the mesothelium, hence mesothelioma. What is the mesothelium?

The mesothelium is a type of tissue lined with special cells referred to as mesothelial cells. The mesothelial cells typically line the abdominal cavity, heart cavity, chest cavity, and the outer surface of most internal organs. Each cavity has a specific name for the mesothelial covered cavity which is:

* Peritoneum: abdominal cavity
* Pleura: chest cavity
* Pericardium: heart cavity

The mesothelium has a specific purpose in the body. The mesothelium produces a lubricating fluid that allows easy movement of the organs. The pleural mesothelium for example, allows the lungs to move easily with each breath that is taken. Without this, breathing would be a difficult and possibly painful process.

Many refer to malignant mesothelioma as simply, mesothelioma. There are three main types of malignant mesothelioma ranked from less likely to more commonly seen:

1. Sarcomatoid
2. Mixed/Biphasic
3. Epithelioid

Malignant mesothelioma more commonly begins in the chest cavity (pleural mesothelioma). Approximately 10-20% of the cases of malignant mesothelioma will begin in the abdominal cavity (peritoneal mesothelioma). Malignant mesothelioma rarely begins in the cavity surrounding the heart (pericardial mesothelioma).

Mesothelioma is a type of cancer affecting the cells of mesothelial lining in the chest and abdomen. Mesothelioma is rare, though it appears to be on the rise. Approximately 2,000 to 3,000 new cases of mesothelioma are Diagnosed each year in the United States alone. Symptoms for both types of mesothelioma are not specific only to this disease, and often go undiagnosed or misdiagnosed for a significant amount of time. Difficulty breathing, abdominal and chest pain, and fever can all be attributed to other causes, so this cancer has time to advance fairly fair before diagnosis usually occurs. Due to the difficulty in diagnosis of mesothelioma, survival time after diagnosis is estimated at about a year.

There are two main types of mesothelioma. The first type, pleural mesothelioma,, spreads within the chest cavity, and sometimes involves the lungs. This type or cancer can metastasize into any of the body’s organs, including the brain.

Metastasis occurs more often than previously thought, and signals the disease’s progression. Symptoms of pleural mesothelioma include persistent pain in the chest and severe difficulty breathing caused by pleural effusion, or an accumulation of fluid in the pleural lining Cough, weight loss, and fever are also common symptoms. Survival time for this type of mesothelioma is better than that of peritoneal mesothelioma. The median survival time is 17 months, with ten percent of patients living for three years after diagnosis.

The second type of mesothelioma is peritoneal mesothelioma. This cancer invades the abdominal cavity, the liver, spleen, and sometimes the bowel. Predominant symptoms of peritoneal mesothelioma include persistent pain the region as well as a swollen abdomen, both due to the accumulation of fluid in the abdomen and affected organs. Other symptoms include nausea, vomiting, and swelling of feet, fever, and difficulty moving the bowels. The prognosis for peritoneal mesotheliomais worse than that of pleural mesothelioma, with a median survival time of only ten months past diagnosis.

Mesothelioma takes two rarer forms. Benign mesotheliomais a cancer of the mesothelioma of the peritoneum. The peritoneum is the lining of the major organs in the chest and abdomen. It is difficult to diagnose, and appears more frequently in young women. mesothelioma of the pericardium is a very rare cardiac cancer. Mesothelioma can also occur in the ovaries and scrotum. The prognosis for these unusual kinds of mesothelioma, with the exception of benign mesothelioma, is very poor.

The progression of mesothelioma is broken down to four stages. These stages provide a baseline to predict how far along the cancer has spread. Staging is based on x-rays, CT scans, and MRI imaging. Treatment decisions and prognosis depend upon the stage of the mesothelioma, as well as the kind if mesothelioma. In the first stage, mesothelioma is present in the pleura, lung, pericardium, or diaphragm, and is localized to one side of the body. Mesothelioma invades the chest wall or the esophagus during the second stage. The second stage may also see cancer in the heart, both sides of the pleura, or the lymph nodes in the chest. The third stage involves penetration through the diaphragm and into the peritoneum, and sees cancer spread to more distant lymph nodes. The fourth and final stage occurs when tests provide evidence of metastases in distant organs. Within the fourth stage, the mesothelioma spreads through the bloodstream to these new sights.

Mesothelioma is most often caused by exposure to Asbestos. Asbestos was frequently used for insulation in homes or businesses. Schools, factories, and military buildings have also been found to contain asbestos. Radiation from thorium dioxide may also cause mesothelioma. This material was once used for x-rays, though was not widely used for long. Zeolite, a silicate material related to asbestos, may also cause mesothelioma. Cases of Zeolite-induced mesothelioma centralize in the Anatoli region of Turkey.

E-Learning Vs Manual Edukasi

Memang benar, opini yang mengatakan bahwa, “kerjarlah ilmu pengetahuan hingga ke negeri Cina”. Bagaimana bila opini tersebut yang sudah melekat di telinga masyarakat berubah haluan menjadi “Nyalakan PC-mu dan Mari belajar dirumah”.

Sekilas sepele dalam beberapa hal. Belajar memang tidak dituntut selalu berada di bangku sekolah. Kemanapun kita berada ilmu bisa didapat bila diawali dati niat. Internet sekarang tidak lagi menjadi sesuatu yang mewah dan heboh. Di tepi sawah pun saya rasa bukan hal yang sulit untuk membuka “google.com”.

Hal sepele ini saya rasa bisa menjadi hal yang tidak sepele lagi. Kemajuan dunia Informasi memanfaatkan sejuta peluang untuk melakukan apasaja. Misalkan usaha bisnis yang berbasis Internet, contoh riil kemajuan dunia e-commers ini menjadi tumpuan situs e-Learning untuk tumbuh pesat dan semakin merembah di dunia maya. Bagaimana konsep yang di bangun para guru “e-Learning ” ini memulai membuka situsnya untuk menyalurkan ilmu baik secara gratis ataupun harus membayar.

Konsep awal dari pembuatan E-learning ada yang bersifat money oriented, trial version, atau bahkan free. Jika situs masih tergolong pemula, kebanyakan penulis membuat portal e-learning yang berbasis free, itung-itung sebagai media promosi untuk menarik banyak pelanggan. Jika website dikunjungi banyak orang dan banyak yang menggunakan atau mendwonload tutorial yang disediakaan , situs bisa kembangkan ke trial version dimana cuma memberikan beberapa materi saja yang free sedangkan materi yang lain harus membayar. Bahkan tidak menutup kemungkinan penulis membuat yang money oriented bila pengunjung website sangat banyak.

Konsep kedua adalah bidang apa yang merupakan target sasaran. Karena ini akan berpengaruh terhadap jenis file yang akan diletakkan di website. Sebagai contoh jika situs bergerak di bidang hukum, politik, motivasi, maka di website akan lebih banyak file teks. Sebaliknya jika website bergerak di bidang komputer, multimedia, grafis, maka pada website akan lebih menekankan pada penggunaan file teks dan gambar juga video tutorial.

Dengan pemahaman konsep e-Learning tersebut maka semakin terbuka kesempatan untuk menjadi Guru secara online, dan bayaran secara online pula. Setiap orang yang berkompeten bisa membuat situs pembelajarannya sendiri dan meraup untung dari apa yang telah di kerjakannya. Bagaimana dengan kemajuan dan strategi dari Guru PNS untuk menyikapi hal ini. Tentunya para bapak dan ibu guru harus lebih belajar banyak.

Kompetisi blog ini adalah kegiatan yang diselenggarakan sebagai rangkaian acara HCC 2K9 dengan tema Teknologi dalam Menyongsong Kemajuan Bangsa. Kompetisi blog ini merupakan ajang bagi para blogger untuk menuangkan ide, kreatifitas, dan inovasi mereka untuk turut berpartisipasi aktif dalam mengembangkan techno journalism. Perkembangan teknologi yang saat ini semakin pesat nampaknya masih diketahui oleh sebagian kecil masyarakat saja seperti golongan pelajar dan pengamat teknologi.Masyarakat yang awalnya tidak mengetahui seberapa pesat perkembangan teknologi kini dapat ditingkatkan dengan adanya blog.

Sebagai salah satu rangkaian acara HCC 2K9, kompetisi ini bertujuan untuk
membangkitkan minat masyarakat dalam pembuatan blog yang berisikan ulasan
