Feel Ubuntu: Ubuntu on Virtual Box

Today I will explain you how to use Ubuntu with virtual box. Virtual box allows you to have one or more virtual PCs. You can learn about virtual box by my previous post. Many of people are afraid o install Ubuntu directly on their PCs as it may effect on the performance of the system and it may occur some errors. But using virtual box you can use Ubuntu without any risk.

you will need following things,

Virtual Box Software
Ubuntu CD or Ubuntu Image file with a virtual CD drive software

First of all you have to install Virtual box. Then open virtual box. Then click New button

Then give a name and select Operating system as Linux and select version as Ubuntu. Now click Next

Now you have to select Ram size. I left it as default. (512 MB) Then click Next

Now you have to allocate space for you virtual machine. Select Create new hard disk option and click next

now select VHD(Virtual Hard disk) option and click next

Here you have to select whether your allocated space is dynamically allocated or fixed. If you select dynamically virtual hard disk will increase its size when you are storing more files. But maximum size is the amount defined by you. If you select fixed size then it will allocate whole amount selected by you initially. I will use dynamic allocation here. then click next.

Now select the space needed for virtual hard disk I use 6GB here.

Click next. then click Create button on next window to create virtual machine. Now you will have a screen like below and your virtual machine will be listed on the window. Now you have to mount Ubuntu image on virtual drive or insert your Ubuntu CD. You can use Virtual clone drive for this. It is a freeware. You can learn how to mount images using virtual clone drive from HERE.

Now select Your virtual machine name (in my case it is Ubuntu) and click on start icon on the top pane.

Now you will be come up with a window like below. Click Next.

Now you have to select the virtual CD Rom where your Ubuntu image is mounted form next window. After selecting the drive click Next.

Then click Start button from next window. Now you will get a screen like this. wait there until it loads.

Then you will get screen below. Click install Ubuntu from there.

If you are using a laptop you have to plugged to a power source to continue from here. Also your virtual hard disk allocation must be at least 4.4GB (I am using Ubuntu 12.04, it needs at least 4.4GB) Next window will ask for above requirements. Also it asks about internet connection. but no need to have a internet connection at this stage. After fulfilling these requirements click Continue

Then select option Erase disk and install Ubuntu from next window. Don't be afraid to select this option. As this is a virtual machine original data in your PC is safe. Then click Continue

Then click Install now from next window

Now installation starting. You can configure your location, Keyboard layout, user names and passwords while files being copied.

After that Ubuntu is installing.Below is the Ubuntu installing screen

Then you will asked to restart the machine. click restart and remove your Ubuntu CD from the tray or unmount Ubuntu from your virtual drive.
Then PC will restart and you will be prompted with this screen. Enter your password and log in to Ubuntu.

Congratulations. Now you have successfully installed Ubuntu on a virtual box virtual PC. Now you can feel the real Ubuntu experience while you are in windows enviorenment or any other enviorenment. Hi friends, Today I am going to tell you about Oracle Virtual Box. This is a great piece of software. Earlier this was called as Sun Virtual box.

Oracle Virtual Box is running on on Windows, Linux, Macintosh, and Solaris hosts and supports a large number of guest operating systems including but not limited to Windows (NT 4.0, 2000, XP, Server 2003, Vista, Windows 7), DOS/Windows 3.x, Linux (2.4 and 2.6), Solaris and OpenSolaris, OS/2, and OpenBSD.

Quite a lot of excellent smartphones have been released on this year. As there are so many choices out there it is difficult to keep track on which is the best of best. I guess I’m correct

So today I thought to cover some of the best smartphones that have been released on this year and help you decide which suits you best. Here’s some fact that you will have to consider when selecting your very own new smartphone.

Samsung Galaxy SIII

As you see this is an incredibly beautiful smartphone that runs on Android Operating System. Currently the Galaxy SIII is running Android 4.0 ICS, but it is likely Samsung owners will see an OTA update for Android 4.1 Jelly Bean.
The Galaxy SIII is available in a marble white, and pebble blue, finish for $626 without a contract.

Cloud Computing has become a very popular topic these days. Let’s see what it is. Imagine that you are a CEO in a big company. Every time you recruit a new worker you will have to buy a new computer for him and will have to install software for it. Now you will have to bare software license costs and also need technically skilled people to maintain computers. That is lot of trouble.

So Cloud Computing is the solution to overcome all these troubles. Simply imagine there’s a super computer somewhere. It has installed all the software you want. Only thing you have to do is use interface software or a web browser to access the features of your interest.
There are two parts in cloud computing called front end and back end. Front end is a computer user who uses a computer which has installed the application to access cloud computing system. Back end is the cloud section of the system. It includes servers and data storage systems.
Now you must be wondering how a company can trust a computer in another place and runs their programs and store their data on it. Let me give you some fair reasons.

Few days ago Nikon introduced the world’s first Android Camera named as “Coolpix s800c”. It will cost $349.95. It consists of 10x optical zoom lens, 16 mega pixel BSI CMOS sensor, 5-inch OLED WVGA touchscreen, 1080p movie capture mode, Android 2.3 and GPS technology

Before Samsung Company introduce Android Camera, Nikon Company was able to introduce world’s first Android Camera.

BEWARE!!! Anyone can access even your deleted pictures on Face Book…. :o

Are you a heavy FB user..? Then this will be very useful for you. Be careful when you upload your personal pictures and videos on FB. Because when you upload a picture or a video it will automatically syndicate in more than one server. This is done to make it easier to access. So even if you delete this picture or video anyone, including you can access it again. Now that is something you did not expect. Well we can call it as another drawback in FB on your privacy.

Why the hell our pictures are there even after deleting...??

Face Book works on CDN (Continent Distribution Network) to brows faster and to make it easier to find things. When you upload a picture or a video a copy of it is stored in local servers. If you delete whatever you uploaded it will get erased on the main server but not on local servers. It will take about 30 months for the picture or video to get erased from local servers. That means more than two years... So within this time period any one can access your deleted stuff.

How to access deleted images…

If you know the URL of the deleted image you can access it very easily. Follow the instructions below.

First of all open the image which is about to delete in a new tab.
Copy its URL on the address bar to a note pad.
Now right click on the image and click “copy image URL”. Save this URL also in a note pad. (This URL will be used later to view image)
Now delete your image.
Now take the first URL, copy/paste it on address bar and access it. Now you will get this message “This Content is Currently Unavailable”

Now copy/paste the second URL on address bar and access it.

Now you can see the image you just deleted is still on FB. If someone knows the URL for your image he or she can access it at any time.

So to inform your friends on FB like and share =)

Are you using CFL bulbs??? Then you must read this

Around 900 million of CFL bulbs are discarded annually throughout the world. The fact is that most of them are not discarded properly. Eventually they end up mixing with water sources and earth.

It is calculated that each one of these discarded bulbs contain around 5 milligrams of mercury. Mercury is a highly toxic heavy metal and the scientists have found that the amount of mercury in one single CFL bulb have the ability to pollute 6,000 gallons of water.

Total amount of mercury in five bulbs is enough to eradicate the aquatic life in 7,70,000 gallons of water. Now that sounds scary.

Once mercury is exposed to environment it forms methylmercury by the action of anaerobic aquatic organisms that live in aquatic systems like rivers, lakes, soil etc. For the record methylmercury is much more toxic. It gets absorbed into water, food cultivations. As it has a half-life of 72 days in aquatic environments it remains for a considerable time in the environment without decaying. Also methylmercury gets biomagnified in aquatic food chains. That means the concentration of methylmercury increases with the level of the food chain. So the predators ,birds and specially humans who are in higher levels of the food chains are at a high threat of receiving million times amplified amount of poison.

Methylmercury can damage brain and nerve system of a grown up man and can cause irreversible damages for the growth of infants. According to the report of American national Science Academy 60,000 of impaired children are born annually in America due to exposure of high level of methylmercury during pregnancy.

What a broken CFL bulb can do?

Mercury gas and dust emitted from a broken bulb can remain on your bed spreads, carpets for about 20 years. Now you may see that a broken bulb is not just an economical lose. Children of your future generations will play on these polluted mattresses and carpets.

American Environmental Agency has published these guidelines to ensure your safety

Never remove a bulb while it’s still hot. It can be more dangerous than a normal bulb.
When a bulb is broken in a room vacant the room immediately before people get exposed to mercury gas.
Keep all the doors and windows opened for 15 minutes.
Switch off the fans.
Remove broken glass using disposable gloves.
Remove all the bed spreads, carpets in the room. Never use them again.
Put all the waste material in a sealed polythene bags.

Do CFL bulbs increase the threat of breast cancers?

The bright blue light emitted from CFL bulb is similar to day light and it reduces the secretion of melatonin from pineal gland in brain. This may cause breast cancers and also prostate gland cancers in males. World health Organization has accepted that employees like nurses who work at night under some kind of light source are at high risk.

Do CFL bulbs save your money?

People are prone to use CFL bulbs because they save energy and also there is a belief that they also save money.

Manufactures say that by using CFL bulbs can save 80% of your electricity bill but keep in mind this 80% means the electricity required to light the bulb. Normally in a house 5% of electricity from the total usage is consumed to light bulbs.

These bulbs are manufactured to expire soon as their warranty period expires. The first bulb manufactured by Thomas Alva Edison over 100 years ago still functions and produce light. This shows that economic forces which are only targeted on increasing sales have conquered the market and exploit your money and the environment.

By not turning on your television unnecessarily, by maintaining your fridge properly and by using electricity with proper management you will be benefited with good personal health and a healthy environment.

If CFL bulbs are used with care and if discarded bulbs are recycled properly they won’t cause so much trouble. But the manufacturers and the sellers seem to pay no attention about this. But few countries who are keen about their environment and people have paid attention for this fact.

New Zealand government has removed the law which prohibits the usage of normal bulbs.
German government has prohibited using CFL bulbs in public places and hospitals.
To reduce the harm caused by CFL bulbs most developed countries have given the responsibility of discarding them properly to their manufactures.

Now the time is ripen enough to take proper actions against the environmental destruction and save it for the future generations.

Cisco Certified Network Associate

The CCNA certification is the best option for the computer net workers, field technicians, IT helps desk engineers, and other professionals of IT associated with controlling the computer networking process. This certificate is considered as the basic qualification for installing, operating, configuring and troubleshooting a mid-sized switched and routed network. A CCNA certified professional is considered to be trained in working with a networking environment that includes a group of switched networks. How to become a Network Engineer

In this post I will tell you how to become a Network Engineer. IT industry has a rapid growth now. So more and more job opportunities are revealed on IT industry. According to my perspective Network Engineer is a really cool Job in this IT field.It's enjoyable, high paying but challenging.

But my advice is when you are choosing a profession choose the profession which you are most interested in. That may make you a expert and really successful person.

If you are willing to be a Network Engineer you will have to get some vendor specific certifications like Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA). It is a key to the success. Also it will be a definite advantage in your career if you are having a degree related computer science or networking. Regarding CCNA, it is somewhat difficult get that certification because it test for theoretical and also practical knowledge too.

Also experience is a must. The key to be a good Network engineer is hands on experience. So you must have have experience with network devices. You can apply for a job with zero experience and you can get experience. It is better you work hard in first few years in your job and then you will get great experience.
Also you can get hands on experience using network simulators. I have explained it on my last post.

Also if you are willing to be a Network Engineer, you have to improve your soft skills. As a network Engineer you have to deal with lot of clients and also you will have to presentations about Technical stuff. So should get prepared for it.

Learning Cisco Router Configuration with GNS3

Today I am going to tell you about GNS3. It is a Graphical network simulator. You can emulate Cisco and Juniper Routers. Knowledge of using GNS3 will be a great help for you if you are studying for certifications such as Cisco CCNA, CCNP, CCIP and CCIE as well as Juniper JNCIA, JNCIS and JNCIE. In this post I will tell you how to emulate Cisco router using GNS3.

GNS3 is free software and you can download it here
You can simply install it using double clicking the setup file you got,
After installing you can open GNS3 software

Go to Edit --> Preferences

Then set your project saving location and Image directory at the General Tab.

Now go to Dynamips Tab --> Click Test Sttings Button. Then you should get the message "Dynamips successfully started" as shown in next figure.

Otherwise you have a problem.

OK. Now you have done basic steps. Now let's add Cisco router images. You can download router images here

Now go to Edit --> IOS images and hypervisors

Then Browse and select router image according to your need. GNS3 will automatically set RAM size for particular router image.

Now click Save--> Close (You can set Idle PC value later, leave it blank for now)

All right now you are almost done. Now drag a router from shown image. Use the route series which you configure the image. In my case it is C3600. (Without configuring image you can't use router)

You can configure the interfaces of router by, Left click on router --> Configure

Then you will get a window and you can choose interfaces for your router by using slots tab.

You can start your router by, Left click on router --> Start

Now you can see R1 button on topology summary area will become green.

But problem at this stage is your CPU utilization will become 100%. To avoid this,

Left Click on Router --> Idle PC

Then you will get a window with a drop down box. Select the value marked with star on drop down list.

OK. That's it. Now Left click on Router --> Console.
You will get console window.

Now we are done. Congratulations. Now you have fully working Cisco router with all functions. Best of all is it's for free. Now you can get hands on experience with Cisco routers.
