type='text'>Establish Your Foundation In Criminal Justice By Taking An Introductory Course

Intro to Criminal Justice is a great introductory class for students who have not yet committed to pursuing a degree in the criminal justice field. The course is a tasty appetizer covering foundational topics such as crime and justice in the United States. After partaking in the course, you will be ready to make a decision as to whether or not to pursue this particular field of study.

Intro to Criminal Justice covers a multitude of criminal and legal subjects. As an overview course, it is inclusive of many foundational elements. One of the fundamental components of the criminal justice field is criminal procedure. And, from criminal procedures, students explore several processes that ensure procedural regularity. Three of the procedural elements reviewed in Intro to Criminal Justice are adversary process, accusatory system, and due process.

The adversary process refers to what evidence the government may present, how they can present it, how the defense may respond to the evidence, and how the defense may present its own evidence. In short, this process explains how both sides can tell their sides the story within the rules and regulations prescribed by the government. Both prosecutor and defense are charged with doing their best to ensure each follow the rules in hopes that their evidence wins the case.

The accusatory system is the criminal side of the adversary process. This system places the burden of proof on the government (in criminal cases). Accusatory system refers to the more familiar term, "innocent until proven guilty," which mean defendants do not have to bare the weight of proving their innocence. On the contrary, the government must prove their guilt. The accusatory system requires the government to secure facts in order to make their case.

Learning about the history of the accusatory system is fascinating. It is based on the supremacy of the individual in a free society and the suspicion of corruptible government power and the abuses that can ensue from corrupted power. In addition to innocent until proven guilty, other characteristics of the accusatory system are the right to remain silent, so that one does not incriminate himself or herself, and the right to an attorney. All of these characteristics exemplify the importance of the individual in the law.

Due process is one of the most important elements of criminal procedure. This process lies within the Fifth and Fourteenth Amendments. It refers to the two dimensions of due process law: limiting the powers of the government and promoting order, timeliness, and finality in decision-making. In short, due process controls the means that police, prosecutors, and the government can use to enforce criminal law.

These three procedural elements demonstrate the importance of the individual in our society. The criminal procedure respects every individual's dignity, independence, and equality; however, there are times when these very same processes can go against society. The same rules that protect us against government abuse of power also inhibit the search for the truth in individual cases. Consequently, some guilty individuals go free in order to ensure that the government plays by the rules governing criminal procedures.

This article touched upon a few fundamental elements covered in the Introduction to Criminal Justice course. You will learn about other subject matter that will give you a better insight into this adrenaline pumping field. Take the course and see if you would like to study criminal justice throughout your college career. If online college is your forte, you may take a free introductory course in this field through Test Drive College Online. By this way, you can find out if you are really interested in this field, and maybe enroll in an online program through elearners.com.

Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=Daniel_Still
http://EzineArticles.com/?Establish-Your-Foundation-In-Criminal-Justice-By-Taking-An-Introductory-Course&id=6202403

Get a Headstart in the Criminal Justice Industry? Afterwards, your career can go anywhere in the establishment you want to take it.

The online BS curriculum is much like that of the BA. Added to your studies are research writing and the courts and their policies. Theories of crime is another addition. There is also a long list of electives relating to your course themes. These include sciences, politics, histories, and humanities. The majority of those entering the criminal justice field will go for the BS because it offers an internship. This way you will be more prepared when you start working.

If either of these courses of study sounds interesting to you, there are many schools offering programs. An online criminal justice bachelors degree can be just the thing you need. It is especially true if you want deeper education but lack flexibility enough for traditional schooling.

For more info see criminal justice degrees online [http://www.onlinedegreesonline.com/criminal-justice-degrees-online.htm] its not just law enforcement, and making the right choice when choosing online degrees in criminal justice [http://www.onlinedegreesonline.com/online-degrees-in-criminal-justice.htm].

Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=Susan_Pratt
http://EzineArticles.com/?Top-Online-Criminal-Justice-Bachelors-Degree-Schools&id=2471560

Criminal Justice - Online Career Instruction

Criminal justice is a broad field that centers on a variety of professional careers like social work and detective work. Learning to become an active member in the workplace requires students to gain a certain knowledge base. Online instruction can be gained at several degree levels, allowing students to transition into the field with ease.

Instruction will span multiple areas, which includes sociology, political science, philosophy, criminal behavior, and much more. Entry-level to managerial positions can be sought after by students that complete an associate's, bachelor's, or master's degree program. These three options make up the online choices available to students. In essence, education provides a logical way of explaining the criminal behavior in society and learning how to control it.

Career instruction inside an associate's degree program prepares students for work in law enforcement and corrections. Students should expect to complete a program in approximately two years. Job skills learned consist of:

Self-defense Techniques

Firearms Safety

Crime Intervention

Defensive Driving

In order to completely understand how to carry out different enforcement tactics students work through a focused curriculum. Deviant behavior, social policy, criminology, and legal terminology are some subjects explored. The ability to enter work as a police officer, investigator, bailiff, and more is available upon completion of an accredited program.

The processes and responses needed to prevent crime are learned when students complete a bachelor's degree program. Complex training builds the foundation to work with criminals and the legal system. Penology, criminal law, civil liberty, and criminal procedure are some courses that prepare students for a career. Education typically lasts four years and gives students career knowledge in areas that include:

Administration Services

Victim Relationships

Correctional Code

Careers in the public, private, and government sectors of criminal justice are obtainable making education invaluable. Most areas consist of entry-level employment where professionals work their way up to more advanced positions. Criminologist, police detective, and private security are some career options available to bachelor degree holders.

Career instruction at the graduate level of education is not required for most positions. However, obtaining a master's degree from an online college will greatly increase the ability to advance to senior-level management and administrative careers. All areas of the field are studied at an advanced level to prepare students to take on more responsibility inside their career. Juvenile delinquency, crime theory, forensic technology, criminal courts system, and correctional counseling are a few areas examined inside a master's degree. Depending on the specialization students choose education may last two to five years. Career possibilities include:

Federal Bureau of Investigation Agent

Coast Guard

United States Marshall

Crime Scene Investigator

Enter a challenging and rewarding career in criminal justice by entering an accredited online instruction program. Agencies like the Distance Education and Training Council ( http://www.detc.org ) are approved to fully accredit quality educational training programs. Students can begin their study of criminal behavior and law enforcement by completing the program right for their career goals.

DISCLAIMER: Above is a GENERIC OUTLINE and may or may not depict precise methods, courses and/or focuses related to ANY ONE specific school(s) that may or may not be advertised at PETAP.org.

Copyright 2010 - All rights reserved by PETAP.org.

Renata McGee is a staff writer for PETAP.org. The path to obtaining a degree in Criminology and Criminal Justice has never been easier.

Criminal justice online education programs offer the best opportunity to develop the knowledge and skills needed for professional growth in this type of field. Whether you are currently a college student or a working professional, you will enjoy the many benefits of an online education.

When taking online courses you will be "in class" with students from other parts of the nation. This diversity adds a new dimension to "class discussions" that greatly enhances the learning experience. Online students have the opportunity to discuss and compare their local crime data with others that live many miles away.

In some programs the students build PowerPoint presentations on the criminal activity in their local area. These presentations can be very detailed and include such information as maps and census research. As the presentations are shared with "classmates" the students are afforded the opportunity to learn about communities from across the nation. The real advantage to this "collection and sharing" of information is that the students gain a much broader understanding of our Criminal Justice System.

An online education in criminal justice is usually preferred by non-traditional students. This could be anyone that does not fit the typical profile of a college student. A high percentage of online students are employed full-time and have family obligations. Many are professionals.

The online Criminal Justice Degree Programs allow students to complete their entire degree from home - without visits to the campus. This provides for personal convenience which can ultimately assist students in being more successful in the completion of the degree.

If you are proficient with the computer, disciplined in time management and have strong organizational skills distant learning will work for you. Many adults return to school to keep up with the skills and knowledge required to be competitive in the modern marketplace. With so many professions requiring an educational background as opposed to "experience" it is expected that the trend toward 'returning to school' will be on the increase for years to come.

Online education affords the students time to continue enjoying their current life(style) while earning the education necessary to continue a rewarding career. The same degree and benefits enjoyed by students in the on-campus program are provided to the students in the online program. An online education in criminal justice will give you the tools needed to succeed, all delivered in a convenient and comprehensive format.

If you have an interest in pursuing a career in Criminal Justice consider the advantages of an online education. You will save time and inconvenience because you will not be required to "attend" classes on campus. You will enjoy the diversity made possible by the various locations of the students. Your life will not be completely disrupted. And you will learn in a comprehensive design that will deliver the degree you desire.

You can find out more about a Criminal Justice Online Education [http://www.onlineeducationa-z.com/criminal-justice-online-education.html] as well as much more information on everything to do with online education at [http://www.onlineeducationa-z.com]

Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=Terry_Edwards
http://EzineArticles.com/?Criminal-Justice-Online-Education-Programs---Convenient-and-Comprehensive&id=1003065

The Benefits of Getting a Criminal Justice Degree Online

My friend Clare has always been interested in law and justice, but growing up in a poor area of the country where opportunities were limited, she dropped out of the education system at a young age and started a reasonable yet largely unrewarding job. For years she dreamt of going to college to study for a criminal justice degree but time, family commitments and money prevented her from realising her ambitions. But only last year Clare enrolled on an online criminal justice degree and hasn't looked back since.

I'm surprised at the pace of her learning. I'd never considered a distance learning degree could be that practical, but thanks to the popularity of using the web as a quite useful teaching tool it seems a range of studies can be delivered through online education.

Although Clare is - or rather was - completely new to studying or working in the criminal justice sector, many other students already have a career in the criminal justice profession; they are either building on their existing skills and knowledge to develop their role, or looking to progress into a new job, or even both.

What Clare is discovering and what is generally considered to be one of the greatest benefits of online study, is that it is as vocational as you need it to be, especially considering that teachers will usually have recent experience of, or still be working in, the criminal justice sector.

Clare' experience of course is limited, but even after 3 months she's finding the criminal justice degree that she's studying for online to be well worth the effort of fitting in a degree course around her work and family commitments.

Because online colleges that offer criminal justice BA degrees online understand that their students will come from a variety of backgrounds, courses are especially geared to consider a wide range of often quite specific needs.

Clare's attitude with technology is fairly pragmatic. If she doesn't find it useful then she won't use it. According to her, a simple understanding of the web is enough to take advantage of the incredibly easy to use online systems for studying her criminal justice degree online.

By studying online, criminal justice and criminology is far easier she imagines, than the expense and time costs of having to attend a conventional college. Childcare costs, commuter stress and sheer inconvenience are but a few of the things she doesn't have to put up with by studying online at a quality provider of distance learning.

The criminal justice system is modernising, and Clare finds that by studying online she can keep up to date with developments in the sector.

Communication is easy according Clare, be it with fellow students or teaching staff, and she finds getting information over the web has a really good impact on her work. Web classes are broadcast live or can even be viewed later according to her work and home schedule. So, studying online seems to be a practical solution for a practical person.

Sarah Maple writes about marketing courses and distance learning.

Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=Sarah_Maple
http://EzineArticles.com/?The-Benefits-of-Getting-a-Criminal-Justice-Degree-Online&id=1296410

Finding Criminal Justice Degrees Online

There are many different ways to go about getting a degree nowadays. Usually people had to go to local colleges to get degrees. However, thanks to the internet, people are able to get online degrees in less time than it might take at a local college. One such degree that people are now looking for online is the criminal justice degrees. These are very popular degrees, that now can be found online at many different schools. Of course, before you go rushing off and joining the first school that offers you criminal justice degrees online, there are a few things that you should know. These are things that we are going to talk about today, that could just aid you in finding the best overall school for you.

You have to remember, when looking for criminal justice degrees online, that you always run the chance of running into an untrustworthy site. These are sites that offer online degrees, but not accredited online degrees. To put it simply, getting an online degree from a non-accredited school is just about as good as printing up your own degree and saying that you have a degree in criminal justice. It is something that just does not work! Thus, when looking online for criminal justice degrees, you have to get them from schools that are accredited. It is not hard to find out if a school is accredited, and normally, they will have it listed some where on their site.

The next thing that you have to do, is find an online school that offers degrees in criminal justice. Just like local colleges, not all online colleges are going to offer the same courses. However, criminal justice is a pretty popular field to get into, so you should not have a hard time finding an online college that does offer these course. However, when you do find a school that is offering these online course, you have to make sure it's a good school to attended via internet. Just because a school is accredited, does not mean that it's a good school. The best thing that you can do is to actually look around for reviews on that school. See if you can find any forums that talk about that site or any online review sites (for online colleges), and see what people have said about it. After all, there is no point in attending an online college that is not going to help you achieve your goal.

Pretty much, what it all comes down to, when looking for criminal justice degrees online, or any kind of degree online, you just have to check into it before you jump the gun. There are a few different ways to go about it, all of which are worth looking into as a whole.

One website that offers great information on the level of safety in any given area is NeighborhoodScout.com. You can enter in the city of interest and it will break the website will down the area you've chosen and show you the percentile of quality neighborhood you're looking at. This is a great source to take the first step into locating the best places to live.

You can also contact your local Sheriff's office and ask them to give you information on the crime level of of a specific area, or city. They may be able to provide you with the latest statistics and just give you their general opinion. They often know outright if there are more, or less crimes reported and can steer you in the right direction with a more knowledgeable, impartial opinion than any other form of guidance you can receive.

Now narrow your search down by driving around all the neighborhoods. At that time, you can see how well kept the other homes are, if there's graffiti, people screaming, loud music, or other issues. It's best to cruise the neighborhood in the mid to late afternoon, when there are likely to be more people outside, so you can see what it's like during the most active hours.

Last and most effective is to go up to the people you see outside and talk to them. Find someone who looks like a homeowner or renter if possible, let them know you've been thinking about moving nearby and ask them how happy they've been living on their street. Many people are happy to tell you if they feel safe, how much crime they've seen, or heard about, and will often give you advice on what areas are the quietest.

Another concern is that the neighborhood seems good now, but might get worse in the next 10 years. One way to get a glimpse into the future is to look into the schools, even if you don't have children. Schools that have the higher test scores and lowest crime often have superior teaching system, and better parents living locally.

Susan is a real estate agent in the Antelope Valley. This means, Baltimore is safer than 5 percent of the cities in the United States. Annually, there are 11,000 violent crimes and 37,000 crimes against property. These rates can seem a little overwhelming, but despite them, there are some very safe neighborhoods in Baltimore.

The top ten safest neighborhoods in Baltimore are:

1. Glendale / Glenmont
2. Roland Park
3. Pinehurst
4. Armagh / Woodbrook
5. Homeland
6. Anneslie / Idlewylde
7. Evergreen
8. Charles St / Cold Spring Ln
9. Wellwood / Dumbarton
10. Armistead Gardens

In the Glendale / Glenmont neighborhood, the annual crime rate for violent crimes is 0 and 10 for property crimes. Property crimes could include burglary, vandalism, or trespassing. The Roland Park neighborhood has an annual crime rate of 6 violent crimes and 21 property crimes. At the bottom of the list is Armistead Gardens ranked as the 10th safest neighborhood in Baltimore. Annually, this neighborhood reports 13 violent crimes a year and 79 property crimes.

The most popular neighborhoods in Baltimore are City Center, Overlea, Ranchleigh, Guilford, and Woodberry.

The neighborhoods with the highest crime rates in Baltimore are City Center, Liberty Heights, Druid Hill, North Ave, and Reistertown.

Moving to one of the top 10 safest neighborhoods in Baltimore does not necessarily mean that you are guaranteed to be 100 percent safe, but it does on the other hand, help you to have peace-of-mind knowing that the odds of something happening to you, your family, or your property is much lower than in the more crime-prone neighborhoods. After reviewing this list, decide on the areas of town that you are interested in and start your apartment search within those neighborhoods. Once you find an apartment you can then move in knowing that you are living in a safe neighborhood.

Joy Michelle is an Internet marketing consultant and enjoys helping people find great products on the Internet.

Please visit my website to read more reviews and information related to Baltimore Apartment Reviews. Most think the way to deal with unbridled crime is to allow the police to deal with this epidemic. Non violent persons had no problem carrying some kind of non lethal self defense products. Others believe that ownership of firearms by law abiding citizens will reduce the violent crime rate. Of course arming citizens does not sit well with Law Enforcement Agencies..They are concerned that this would only aggravate an already bad situation. Just imagine what would happen if two strangers got involved in a physical confrontation and they both were carrying a handgun. We can only imagine that it could easily escalate into a gun fight.

A friend of mine who carries not lethal self defense weapons and lives in a large city with a high crime rate stated. "Every time I leave my apartment, I fear for my life". You may not feel that helpless, but I am sure that the realization that you could become a victim has crossed your mind. My mother frequently commented when she was much younger when there was a murder anywhere in the city the community was shocked and appalled. Murders only occurred on a very small scale, and murderers were viewed as monsters. Today we are so used to hearing of homicides and other violent crimes we have become desensitized. In some major cities murders exceed three hundred a year.

I grew up in Baltimore City, and I was exposed to crime and violence at a very young age. I thought all cities had the same crime problems until I did a stint in the army. Traveling around the country while in the military, I discovered peaceful crime free communities where people actually spoke to you when they walked by. In Baltimore City if a stranger acknowledges you, they usually want something. Self defense and crime were my last concern. After military service, I spent eleven years on the Baltimore City Police Department. I saw more carnage and death as a police officer than I experienced in a year of combat. I finally left the police Department and now live in small town around 60 miles from the city.

I finally moved away from an environment of noise, trash in the streets and in some area rats as big as cats. I live in a quiet clean and friendly community. Although the crime rate is nowhere near the scale of Baltimore City, recently a number of brutal rapes and murders have occurred. I notice especially at night people seem apprehensive and very cautious. Rarely do you see women walking alone or approaching strangers making casual conversations. Several of my friends have obtained weapons for their self defense. There is a lesson for all honest, hard working, law abiding citizens out there. You may have always lived in a low crime rate area, or you may have recently moved to one. Crime is everywhere and self defense should always be your concern.

Jerome Wilkins is a former decorated Baltimore City Police Officer. While there is no such thing as a crime-free apartment, there are certain things you can do when perusing your Houston apartment listings that can help you to be more aware of your surroundings and make sure you get the most secure place for your money.

The Houston Police Department has instituted the Blue Star Multi-Housing Program, which is an effort between the police and Houston apartment managers and residents to help lower the crime rate in apartment complexes. The police train the managers in a class in various ways to make the complex safer, and the complex has to have a survey of the property to qualify, which takes into effect such things as lighting, on-site security, and other such necessities. You can see what complex has been certified by visiting their website online.

Many free apartment locator services can provide you with crime rate statistics for the neighborhoods for Houston apartment listings you are looking in. Southwest Houston tends to have higher crime rates, where River Oaks is the more affluent area and has high-end apartments and lofts. And according to WalletPop, the neighborhood around Highway 6 and Westheimer is the safest in terms of crime as of February 2010.

You can also do this research yourself, but be sure to take online apartment rating website listings with a grain of salt if there's only one comment about crime as it could be an isolated incident. You can check Houston crime data, including crime rates by neighborhood, online with Neighborhood Scout. Another website is Spot Crime, which has an interactive map showing what crimes have been reported via GoogleMap. You can also call the local library and have their research staff help you with finding out how accurate the information on these websites are.

Once you've narrowed your search to a handful, you can also check with the police for the crime rate on that apartment complex itself. Be sure to do a walk of the community yourself, looking at the same kinds of things the Blue Star survey does. If it's a gated community, be sure to check the statistics on the gate as to how often it's been repaired as that can be a sign of a potential crime issue. Be wary of apartment complexes that have especially good deals or low rent, as many Houston apartments use that tactic when low on residents. As the phrase goes, if it seems too good to be true, it probably is. Also, many apartment complexes now do criminal background checks on incoming residents. Have that be one of your requirements if you are especially worried about crime.

Once you find an apartment in Houston, no matter how safe the neighborhood and apartment complex is, there are certain things you can do to lower your chances of being a victim of crime, the biggest of which is having renter's insurance and having a good batch of common sense.

Bill Hinson is an Internet marketing consultant and enjoys helping people find great products on the Internet.

Please visit my website to read more reviews and information related to Houston Apartments. A property may otherwise seem perfect, but if it has a high overall crime rate - or consistently experiences a rash of a certain type of crime - that can be a turnoff to a lot of people.

There are obviously different types of crimes, as well as different classifications. In general, misdemeanor crimes are less severe than felonies, with both felonies and misdemeanors having sub-categories of severity - usually with labels like "First Degree" and "Class A," respectively. These classifications vary from state to state, so it's important to understand what your local jurisdiction defines each as before you start looking at the numbers.

And while there are different types of crimes - violence, arson, auto theft, larceny, burglary, assault, robbery, rape, murder, etc. - each area may group crimes together differently than other areas. That's why, when researching crime rates, it's best to go straight to the source. A local police department should have all the information regarding local crimes, and should be able to go back a few years. Be sure to ask them what they classify as a "violent crime" or what constitutes "sexual assault" in order to fully understand the types of crimes you're dealing with.

Depending on the type of crime that is prevalent in a certain area (although the hope is that none are especially prevalent) there may be certain precautions you can take to protect the property from that crime. For instance, if the most significant crime in the area is auto theft, you can install a secure garage door. Having strong locks on all the doors to the house and a working alarm system could also help assuage any fears a potential buyer may have.

As you're doing your research, be sure to compare the area to surrounding areas, as well as both national and state crime rates. A certain crime may seem a bit high to you, but when compared to everywhere else in the state, you may actually be in the middle of the safest area within 100 miles.

As part of this research, especially if there is a possibility children could be living on the property, is to check out the sex offender registry. Again, the local police department should have a list, but there are plenty of websites that are connected to the federal registry and provide interactive maps.

Obviously, the lower the crime rate, the better. However, doing your research beforehand will not only give you better perspective and context, but you'll be able to make appropriate plans and precautions to counteract any potential local crime.

Scott Spjut is a writer and editor who has been featured in various magazines, newspapers and websites, including Newsweek, the Washington Post, CBS News and the Las Vegas Review-Journal. Because of this awesome responsibility, much has been said about the possibility that raising kids minus a mother or father can lead to higher crime rates among children.

While a compelling argument, something as complex as youth crime may not a solitary cause. A case in point would be the fact that most high profile crimes, like school shootings, involve kids from two parent households. Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold, the Columbine killers, lived in fairly upscale neighborhoods and came from two parent homes.

A poll even indicated that 85 % of the public believed that the parents of the Columbine Murders were at fault for their children's criminal behavior. Victim's families even filed civil suits against them for financial damages. So, it would appear that crime rates among children may not be attributed solely to single parent's children, but can stem from any home at any given time.

Single Parent Stigma

While the case can be made that many crimes are committed by children from single homes, studies indicate that there has been a decline in youth crime even though single parenthood still exists. FBI crime statistics even indicate that violent juvenile crime stats are at their lowest point in twenty years. It cannot be ignored that major crime rates among children occur across all demographics. This is especially true when it comes to school shooters, who tend to come from two parent homes.

So, what are the common denominators? One finds that in homes where there is attention, love and care, the child is well adjusted and happy. Of course, a single parent may find it harder to give time and attention, especially when working two jobs to make ends meet. On the other hand, if a double parent home is dysfunctional, abusive or devoid of love, it can produce a hostility that comes out in negatively as well.

Dooming Kids to Failure

The assumption is that most kids from single a parent homes are products of divorce or an "epidemic" of teens who opt to live on welfare and do not have the skills to raise their children properly. A look at welfare statistics however, indicates that only 8% of the welfare dole is given out to teen parents. This means that the epidemic we tend to hear so much about may be a little inflated.

In most cases, teens who have babies receive help from their extended families. This also means that the child may have familial love and support from relatives who assist in child rearing duties. Some children are raised by a single parent because of the death of their mother or father as well. In other words, single parents may end up having to raise a kid alone due to situations beyond their control.

If we live in a society that automatically places single parent kids in the potentially bad apple category, we inadvertently start a self-fulfilling prophecy of crime rates among children in this group. In this case, it won't be from single parenting that these kids act out, but from their reaction to how society chooses to deal with such complex issues. This should be enough to compel us to seek real solutions to an extremely complex problem and not place the blame solely on the shoulders of all single parents.

Pieter West travels the world on a regular basis and have written about numerous subjects. Crime is everywhere in these neighborhoods where kids find too much time on their hands after school hours or after the school year lets out.

What also contributes to the crime rate in such places? Is it just the lack of money for low income families? Sometimes, crime can be attributed to the lack of education on the part of the perpetrator or their families.

It is a statistical fact that the crime rate is inversely proportional to the education level of the culprit. Kids who grow up in families that do not stress the importance of getting an education are more likely to be living out on the streets, doing drugs, joining gangs, or ending up in prison.

Sometimes parents who raise such kids were raised in similar conditions when they were youngsters. Nothing has changed. An education should be foremost on parents' minds when rearing their kids. In fact, an education is the key out of poverty. As the old saying goes, "The way out of the gutter is with a book and not a basketball."

Kids who do not have a good education in school are more likely to have difficulty with finding jobs, getting into college, or staying out of trouble with the law. Many times they have family issues that are attributed to the loss of a parent at a young age due to a death or an incarceration.

Kids from single-parent homes run that risk of growing up as an "at-risk" child. This is due to the fact that the parent must work to provide food and shelter for the child, and the absence of the other parent fails to provide leadership and guidance for a growing mind. A parent who is incarcerated will definitely not be around to guide the child to getting good grades in school.

What kind of message does an incarcerated parent send to a child? Is it okay to be dumb and stupid and end up in prison like their daddy? Like father, like son. Right? Is it okay to skip school and join a gang like their daddy once did?

The truth of the matter is that kids who drop out of school will face hardship in their lives as they grow older. Lack of education on their part means lack of money to support a family. Lack of money translates into robbing a bank or convenience store.

We hear in the news every day a robbery that occurs in our city or elsewhere. Or perhaps a shooting on the part of the perpetrator that caused an innocent life come to an abrupt halt.

What are kids doing nowadays? How can we prevent our own kids from becoming troubled kids? For one, a parent must be a good role model and stress the importance of a good education. That means the parents must take an active role in their child's education by monitoring how much television the child is allowed to watch and taking charge of knowing the kinds of friends that his child associates with. Furthermore, this means maintaining communication with his teachers at school and looking over his report card regularly.

A child with poor academic performance may indicate something wrong at school. Perhaps he does not like school due to external influences; i.e. bullying, difficult teachers, taunting by other students, or peer pressure.

It is better to catch the child's problem as early as possible before it comes to the point that the child is truant from school, or worse, acts out his frustration that is reflected in another Virginia Tech-like massacre.

A child should like his studies and should show interest in his schoolwork. He should be taught that good grades will help him get a good education so that he can get a good paying job and be a productive member of society after he graduates.

Teach your child that involvement in gangs, violence, drugs, and/or extortion will not get him anywhere but prison. Once a person ends up doing life in prison, there IS no second chance. There is no freedom for him. There is no TV, no video games, no music, nothing! Not even a chance to get an education behind bars. If there is school in prison, the education is very limited.

If you are raising a child, question your child as to what is going on in school if he/she displays academic difficulty. Spend some quality time with him/her. Help them with their homework if possible. Remember, you are not just his/her friend, you are their parents. You are the first role model that a child looks toward from infancy. So be a good one and teach him/her what is right by staying in school.

There is a story in Austin, Texas a few years ago. It involved a troubled 17-year-old kid, Manuel Cortez, a high school dropout, who went out with his friends in a stolen car one sunny afternoon, and shot another student, Christopher Briseno, whom he did not even know because Briseno allegedly was teasing the sister of Manuel's friend. Manuel Cortez is now serving life in prison because he made a stupid decision. Now families of the victim and the perpetrator are suffering two losses from society. All for what? Because Mr. Cortez chose to drop out of school and associate with gangs and/or violence? He chose to give up the possibility of an education so that he can run around gang banging? Or did he not have the proper support and guidance from his parents?

Fabiola Castillo is an online marketer for the website NinjaCOPS SuperStore. Brazil has a liberal juvenile justice system that seems far too lenient on youthful offenders. These factors have contributed to the high level of crime in Brazil.

There is a considerable amount of freedom in Brazil. Freedom, as opposed to totalitarian police states, has its price in increased criminal opportunities for the criminal element of society. Illegal drug activity has increased in recent years in Brazil. There are gang wars, and turf battles over the drug territories, and some innocent bystanders are killed in some of the battles. Fortunately the majority of these drug related crimes are contained in the poorer sections of the largest cities in Brazil. If you are not dealing drugs, and not spending time in the high crime inner cities in Brazil, then you are in much less danger of becoming the victim of a crime that you would be in any place in the USA.

Actual Crime Rates in Brazil compared to the USA and Japan

An analysis was done using INTERPOL data for Brazil. For purpose of comparison, data were drawn for the seven offenses used to compute the United States FBI's index of crime. Index offenses include murder, forcible rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, larceny, and motor vehicle theft. The combined total of these offenses constitutes the Index used for trend calculation purposes. Brazil will be compared with Japan (country with a low crime rate) and USA (country with a high crime rate). The following figures are per 100,000 population.

Offense: Rape, the rate in 2001 was 8.50 for Brazil, compared with 1.78 for Japan and 31.77 for USA.

Offense: Aggravated assault, the rate in 2001 was 0.61 for Brazil, 23.78 for Japan, and 318.55 for USA.

Offense: Larceny for 2001 was 309.91 for Brazil, 1401.26 for Japan, and 2484.64 for USA.

Offense: Motor vehicle theft in 2001 was 88.51 for Brazil, compared with 44.28 for Japan and 430.64 for USA.

The rate for all index offenses combined was 927.41 for Brazil, compared with 1709.88 for Japan and 4160.51 for USA.

Source: http://www-rohan.sdsu.edu/faculty/rwinslow/samerica/brazil.html

A Comparative Criminology Tour of the World

Dr. Robert Winslow

rwinslow@mail.sdsu.edu

San Diego State University

Japan is considered one of the safest countries on earth, with a very low crime rate, however Japan has almost twice as much crime overall as Brazil. The USA has over 400% more overall crime than Brazil. However, these statistics are skewed and misleading. Brazil's crime is much localized, almost exclusively limited to the large inner cities. The crime rate in the rest of Brazil is comparable to the crime rate in Vatican City. In the rural areas of Brazil, hitchhiking is still common with very few criminal incidents. Even crimes against property are almost unheard of outside the large cities in Brazil. Outside of the inner cities, Brazil is pretty much the safest place on earth, with an outlandishly low crime rate. By comparison the USA is far more dangerous than Brazil.

There is one other exception to this low crime rate in Brazil. The popular tourist attractions and beaches do have some criminals taking advantage of tourists. These crimes tend to be pick-pocketing, purse snatching, camera snatching, and similar crimes. Even Vatican City has such pick-pockets working the tourists there too. This is an unfortunate fact of life worldwide in every tourist hotspot on earth. Savoy tourists can usually avoid being victimized by these petty criminals.

Do not flash expensive items such as camcorders, cameras, and notebook computers. The red light districts (AMOR à ZONA) should be avoided. The slums (favelas) are high crime areas. ATM machines tend to attract robbers. Thieves work the beaches looking for purses and wallets lying near sunbathers. They grab the purse or wallet and run. Solution: Do not leave your purse or wallet in view. Dress down. Try to look native. Do not stand out.

A word of warning about the Brazilian petty criminals and their methods.

Petty thieves commonly work the public transportation system looking for tourists. They ride the public transportation system (mostly busses) looking to identify a target, usually with a purse or expensive camera in easy view. They will wait until the bus is stopping and opening the doors, then they grab the item and jump off the bus. Lately they have been grabbing whole backpacks, when the tourist is so foolish as to take off his/her backpack on the bus. Solution: Be especially careful on the busses in Brazil. Do not take off your backpack. Do not make it easy for the thieves to grab your valuables and run. Fortunately it is incredibly rare for these petty criminals to become violent. They almost always run away no matter if they are successful or not in the purse snatching attempt. They run not because they are afraid of the tourist, but because they are afraid of a mob or the police catching them. However, you should NOT chase a purse snatcher. They are often armed. The inner city criminals in Brazil are especially afraid of the cops. The police in Brazil are almost as trigger happy as cops in the USA. Fortunately they seem to know the difference between tourists and the street criminals.

In summary, you are far more likely to have your wallet or purse stolen in any city in the USA than in even the tourist areas of Brazil. If you stay away from the inner cities and especially the favelas and if you do not deal drugs or buy illegal drugs you will be far safer in Brazil than in the USA, Canada, or even Japan. There is no need to be afraid of crime in Brazil. Come on, live a little. The sky is not falling down, and Brazil is not so dangerous if you just use common sense.

The author, Arthur Wyss is a resident of Beijing, China. Tampa, as well as other major cities in Florida, is known for its high crime rate.

The ratio of Tampa crime compared to New York City crime is a surprising discovery when keeping in mind that New York City is one of the nation's most densely populated cities. Tampa has a higher ratio of nearly all major crimes including triple the counts of rape and nearly quadruple the counts of burglary.

The only positive statistics coming from Tampa's crime rate is the consistent annual drop in crime. In the past ten years the average crime rate in Tampa has decreased by more than half. Counts of burglary, murder, aggravated assault, and robbery have all dropped, and should continue to do so.

The crimes committed vary in severity and when individuals are prosecuted can be charged with a felony or a misdemeanor. The punishment for a felony can range from a year in prison to life or possibly even the death penalty. Misdemeanors are typically of a less severe nature and can range from a simple fine to up to a year in jail and a $1000 fine.

Misdemeanors can also come with sanctions such as suspension of a driver's license, use of crimes against oneself in future trials, risk or deportation, or house arrest. Though misdemeanors are seen as lesser crimes they can still hurt an individual if he or she continues to disobey the law, and can possibly prevent certain types of employment.

When facing charges a Tampa criminal lawyer can help explain your options to you. The crime rate in Gujarat is low as compared to other states in India. According to National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) report, Ahmedabad has the least crime rate among all Tier-I and Tier-II cities of India. The credit goes to the security measures employed by the state government. However, this achievement is like reaching the clouds when you aim for the moon. The state is trying hard to reduce its crime-rate further.

Main Content:

The use of CCTV (Closed Circuit Television) may give a push to this effort. CCTV cameras help in preventing crime as they help in detecting crime! CCTV surveillance cameras are used in many fields in Gujarat today. Their use in various sectors and their role in deterring crime in those sectors can be summarized below:

* In shopping malls: CCTVs are used in almost all the shopping malls in Gujarat. Surveillance cameras are used to keep shop-lifting in check. The few employees, hired by shop owners, may not be able to keep a watch on the large number of people coming and going! Shop-lifting is possible in such circumstances. A CCTV camera will enable a single employee to monitor many people from a corner of the shopping mall. Even if the thief escapes the first time, his actions will be recorded in the Digital Video Recorder (DVR). Having a picture of the thief may help the police to catch him and retrieve the stolen goods.

* In schools: Many leading schools in Gujarat are properly equipped with CCTV surveillance. Schools install security cameras to keep a track of unwelcome visitors and student actions. The school authorities find it easier to pay attention to violence against children, bullying and juvenile delinquency because of the CCTV cameras and DVRs.

* In office premises: CCTVs may also help in reducing employee theft. A security camera in the premises of a large office will create fear in the minds of the employee of being caught. They will refrain themselves from stealing company stationeries and loiter around. Potential burglars may be deterred from entering the office premises. The trend of using surveillance cameras in offices is picking up speed in Gujarat.

* In railway stations: Central government has announced the installation of more CCTV cameras in railway stations. The major railway stations is Gujarat may also witness this addition. Public places like a railway station are prone to terrorist attacks. If CCTV cameras are installed appropriately, any suspicious activity may be identified. Any future disaster may thus be thwarted.

* On road: CCTV cameras are the most effective in on-road crime detection. The security cameras may read the number plate of the passing car in a hit-and-run case. The sharp eyes of a CCTV camera may observe the actions of chain snatchers, pick-pocketers, eve-teasers and other anti-social elements, if installed on proper places. CCTV cameras are hardly visible on the roads in Gujarat. But they are as desirable on roads as in any other area.

There have been incidents where criminals were caught with the help of CCTV. A leading Gujarati news channel telecasted a theft in a factory in Ahmedabad, recorded by a CCTV camera. The police have the identity of the thieves because of the cameras installed in the factory. In another case, the Gujarat police claims to have photographs of two explosive-laden cars that were found abandoned in Ahmedabad and Surat. The photographs were captured by a CCTV at Pune toll tax. Though the identity of the drivers is not clear in the picture, the photograph is believed to be of help to the investigators. The cops see an underworld motive in the incident.

CCTV helps a single person to keep an eye on the entire area. They help in law enforcement. Gujarat government may succeed in bringing its already low crime-rate, further down, by encouraging the use of CCTV surveillance cameras and DVRs.

Many companies manufacture CCTVs in Gujarat.
