Cookies are everywhere, get to know when it was created? Why? What purpose it serves today and how it is being used for tracking purposes?

We have herd all the times how Facebook and Google track us on the internet to know much about us, our behavior so they can offer us better service or ads to be specific. Cookies are the tool they use to do so and in a pretty fine way.

What is a cookie?

Cookies are small information stored by sites or certain sites on your browser so your browser knows your preference for future use. For example, the site says example.com offers you to set the dark mode in their website, so when you switch to a dark theme, it stores values in your browser say

dark_mode = on

On every new visit to the same site, your browser sends them cookies stored by them, so when that site reads you have stored dark_mode=on, it will choose dark theme style for you to see. Pretty simple right.

History of browser cookies.

Cookies were created by Netscape company in 1994 for a certain use case. They simply want to store shopping cart item list on the browser instead of the server so the server won’t have to store everyone’s data and thus save storage and cost. It was rapidly adopted by Internet explorer in the year 1995 and so on.

Why HTTP cookie?

HTTP is a stateless protocol, that means, every page you visit to a website, or click on the link, it does not know about your previous activity at all.

Take a scenario of logging in to any website say facebook.com

You provide

username: tonny

Password: *************

Your browser will send this information to Facebook and Facebook verifies it yes both details are correct, so it will send you to Feed page right.

This is what we see, there is something in between.

Since your login page validates you but feeds page doesn’t have an idea who you are, stateless again.

Let us get back to the login page and see the process again.

You provide

Username: tonny

Password: *************

And hit Login

Your browser sends this information to Facebook.

Facebook verifies you as Valid user
Facebook generates an authentication key and sends back to your browser
And redirects to feed page.
Your browser will request feed page with that key facebook has provided on login page.
Facebook checks that key and finds it correct, so gets to know your identity who logged in to the previous page
Thus gets your notification, friends, photos for you only.

So you seen without cookies, Facebook doesn’t know you, no website can save your information without you providing who you are by sending cookies they set.

Who can read cookies?

Websites who set cookies on your browser will able to read those cookies only, no other websites can read cookies from any other website.

So Google won’t be reading your cookies from Facebook and so on. So the question arises is:

How Google/Facebook tracks you?

By placing their content/code on sites you visit. Most of the sites nowadays using Google analytics to see their site usage and other information. So they place the analytics code given by Google on their own website which tells the website owner who visited your website.

Let’s make it simpler, say you visit a website called example.com.
It has the Google Analytics code, which calls the google server in the background to send information like, hey Google, the person from this browser is visiting example.com
So when Google service runs on example.com, google can access their own cookies set on your browser and gets to know ohh he is tonny.
So Google knows tonny visited example.com.
Same in case of Facebook,
Many websites keep Facebook Like button and comment button or share button on their website.
Those button needs to contact Facebook in order to know if you have already liked that button or not, so it tells, hey Facebook, I am like button on example.com, this person wants to Click me, let me know if he already liked or not.
When Facebook is called, it now can read cookies is stored in your browser and thus know: Wow, its tonny.

What happens when you clear cookies?

The site will forget you. You will be logged out of the site you are clearing cookies for, and if you clear cookies of your browser, you will be logged out of all sites you logged in to.

What information cookies stores?

Cookies along with login token, can store some of the information which may provide a better experience on the websites.

For example:

Cookies store products page you visit so it lets you know your recently viewed products.
Cookies can store items you add to the shopping cart.
Your personal preference on the website, say theme, language, currency etc.

Limitations?

A website can store a maximum of 300 cookies, and size must not exceed 4096 bytes per cookies and should be accessible by the same domain name only.

What you can do to protect your privacy?

Some website offers you to manage your cookies to allow control over what they know about you. Additionally, you can:

Turn on DNT mode in your browser, which sends information to the website about DO NOT TRACK, however, this is totally on the website how they respect your flag.
Use incognito mode as often as possible, for searching for things, flight tickets, bus tickets, hotels, I strongly recommend using incognito mode, so the site won’t know who you are unless you log in, and thus show you best offer which regularly you might not see.
Use some of the browser extension which will detect tracking cookies and may block those.

Cookies are an essential tool for browser/website, you can not simply live on the internet without it, to check cookies, you can open Dev tools in chrome > Go to Application tab > Click on cookies from the sidebar, and play with stores key, values by cookies.

So we have Android and iOS for most of future time, assuming no big and sudden world changing technology rise.

Just like in 90s and 2000s, every company finally understood that they should have to have a website, in 2010s and 2015s, everyone, including their grandma figured out every company needed to have an app.

First thing first, why app sucks?

To turn on flashlight or to order pizza, you have to have an app, your app needs to be found on your app store, need permission to do stuff on your phone, downloaded on your phone, take up space in your storage, and take space on home screen.

You need app to do anything you want on your smartphone, else its useless in that direction.

Companies, on other hand have to invest lots of effort/time/cost in developing, maintaining, and updating apps to cope with latest hardware and OS. Yeah, awesome they are, Google assistant, Siri, Cortana, and amazon Alexa are already in game, they are already doing lots of things for us, Searching web, ordering food, booking Uber, find restaurant nearby, controlling home lights and ACs, comparing costs, and amazon Alexa, can make purchases on your behalf as well and tons of other features are being added. Those all stuff needed dedicated apps previously but now, boom.

Yeah I am sure all of the apps can’t be replaced by these 3 methods, such as gaming, dedicated professional apps and so on.

Here is the catch, many heroes out there, like NVidia, are already working on streaming games to your phone, HP server can stream high end software, from their server to your phone, that means, improvement in internet speed will let you use your phone to use these sorts of high end applications from your phone to some server working on your behalf.

So what ahead

Most of the apps which are simply interface between company and user will no longer be needed, these common service will be replaced by some sort of assistant/superapps or bots.

Some of will be streamed directly to user devices, no matter what OS user is on and what hardware the app is written for.

Most of developer won’t spent time creating apps, but feeding and automating these via APIs and connecting to bots/assistant and so on.

Just like search engine ranking, developer will get to improve their own service to get top on their list and so user will be benefitted.

You just have to call the can and google assistant may choose best service and cost in your area and book Ola, Uber or whatever will be ranked best at that time. But this will comes at the cost, these aggregator apps will be in power to control what we get. Instead of us to decide which is the best cafe in town, these will show what they can, Based or unbiased, paid or free. Service provider have to optimize their service, may pay to them and have to communicate user to rate them which makes these aggregator apps to be transparent enough.

So what will happen to app gap?

Yeah, that won’t matter anymore, all OS may just have Google assistant, and all the service that is connected to Google assistant, will be usable on that new OS, developer won’t have to create apps, and user won’t be worrying about availability of certain apps on certain OS. Where you see this is going? Hey guys, welcome back to Intelligent computing, previously i posted HOW TO SETUP YOUR AWS AND LAMP TO RUN YOUR FIRST PHP APP? Followed by HOW TO SETUP AND CONFIGURE LAMP ON UBUNTU SERVER? And its great piece of article to setup aws and deploy php web app/site on root of apache.

But if you are having a pretty robust server and/or you planning to deploy multiple websites on single server under multiple domains, you need to step ahead and create virtual hosts in apache2 settings, which i’ll explain how you can proceed and get your new site up and running on same server in few minutes.

If you are running all application in codeigniter, you can setup all application in single codeigniter installation[ Read How i use Codeigniter to Manage Multiple Versions of app and switch in seconds?]

This procedure i am explaining is for ubuntu with apache2 so everything going to be accordingly.

Web Root : /var/www/html/

Apache2 : /etc/apache2/

Site configurations : /etc/apache2/sites-available/

Setting up sites in directory

First of all you need to make sure your website/web app resides somewhere in web root directory, suppose you’ve directory called sites

/var/www/html/sites/

And you have 2 sites in it with folder site1.com and site2.com

/var/www/html/sites/site1.com/

/var/www/html/sites/site2.com/

Pointing your domain to server

You can simply put IP address of server in your DNS setting which will start pointing your domain to server where you are about to host your websites/web app.

It might take 30 minute to 1 hour to complete this process, you can check this as follow

ping www.yoursite.com

This will show your server’s IP address once it’s updated.

Now let’s proceed to virtual host creation.

Create virtual host configuration

Copy /etc/apache2/sites-available/000-default.conf to /etc/apache2/sites-available/site1.com.conf

sudo cp /etc/apache2/sites-available/000-default.conf /etc/apache2/sites-available/site1.com.conf

Open /etc/apache2/sites-available/site1.com.conf with your favourite editor in full admin/sudo mode and edit.

sudo vi /etc/apache2/sites-available/site1.com.conf

Edit file and change following lines and replace with yours configuration

ServerAdmin youremail@hostname.com

DocumentRoot /var/www/html/sites/site1.com/

ErrorLog ${APACHE_LOG_DIR}/site1_error.log

CustomLog ${APACHE_LOG_DIR}/site1_access.log combined

These 4 lines are clear

● Your email address for webmaster

● Document root for your website folder

● Error log name to identify error of your site

● Access log file name to identify log for your site

You are almost done.

Enable site configuration

Now you need to enable this configuration to enable site on your machine.

For this you need to execute simple a2ensite command for your newly configured site.

sudo a2ensite site1.com.conf

And yes you have enabled this site in your configuration, you are one command away to make your site1.com live, just restart your apache and done.

sudo service apache2 restart

Once the command is executed successfully, your site site1.com can be accessed from web directly and you can see web pages/apps stores in /var/www/html/sites/site1.com/ directory

If you face any problem in saving or execution of apache, check everything once again, for any typo or similar stuff.

How to setup and configure LAMP on ubuntu server?

LAMP stands for Linux Apache Mysql and PHP stack which is the base to run web server and websites based on PHP. I am going to explain how you can set up LAMP on any ubuntu server or ubuntu machine step by step. Like and Share to spread this to people who needs it.

If you are a Web developer, or system administrator, you must be having idea what LAMP is, and just like LAMP there are WAMP stands for Windows Apache Mysql and PHP and XAMPP where X stands for Cross platform.

If you are on linux machine and working with command lines only, let's get to know how you can setup LAMP within 10 minute at max, depending on your internet speed for sure.

First thing first

Make sure all your packages are updated on server.

To make sure this, execute this command

sudo apt-get update

This should install updates if available for your system. Once done, let’s get started.

Install LAMP Packages

First of all let’s execute command to install all of the required component to install PHP stack along with Apache and mysql

Execute following command into the putty or your terminal window.


sudo apt-get install php apache2 libapache2-mod-php mysql-server php-mysql

This will ask for some hard drive space to be used and installation should begin.

During installation of mysql in between, you will be asked to provide default mysql username and password for your server.

Provide those details, this will be used to login to phpmyadmin and connecting database as well.

Once installation is finished, restart apache2 to save and update the settings. For the same reason, execute following command.

sudo service apache2 restart

Update: If your MySQL installation didn't ask for the password at the time of installation, please go through following additional steps to set a password

sudo mysqld_safe --skip-grant-tables&
sudo mysql --user=root mysql
mysql> update user set authentication_string=PASSWORD('new-password') where user='root';
flush privileges;
quit
sudo service mysql restart
sudo mysql -u root -p
exit

Followed by following command and instruction for the same.

sudo mysql_secure_installation

2. Check and verify mysql installation

This is simple, you can check mysql installation by following command

mysql -u root -p

Followed by password, if you are able to login, type exit command to exit and this makes sure your mysql is been installed as well.

3. Installing phpMyAdmin

Now we’ll install phpmyadmin, to make sure you knows this, your Apache default directory is

/var/www/html

You can check apache installation by visiting IP of your server or any DNS that is associated with it. This will show apache default page located at /var/www/html/

Now to install phpmyadmin, execute following command.


sudo apt-get install phpmyadmin

This will install phpmyadmin and once done, you have to make short link or say shortcut of this to your root directory/phpmyadmin folder so that you can access via web/http

To do so, execute following command.


sudo ln -s /usr/share/phpmyadmin/ /var/www/html/

This will create a shortcut and you can access your phpmyadmin using /phpmyadmin.

You can also rename phpmyadmin folder to anything you want.

To check this, open your root directory/phpmyadmin or folder name you have specified, this will open phpmyadmin and you can login by entering username and password of mysql as stated earlier.

4. Finalizing setup and enabling htaccess

You may be asked to install mbstring or missing mbstring when running phpmyadmin, to fix that thing, simply execute following command to install it.

sudo apt-get install phpmyadmin php-mbstring php-gettext

This will enable mbstring, and to make this setting effective, restart apache services as we have done earlier by executing command

sudo service apache2 restart

Now we’ll enable htaccess by changing configuration setting of apache.

First execute following command to enable rewrite

sudo a2enmod rewrite

Now edit file using your favorite editor. For my case i’ll use vim to edit configuration file by passing following command.

sudo vi /etc/apache2/apache2.conf

Now look for section where you’ll find

Options Indexes FollowSymLinks

AllowOverride None

Require all granted

</Directory>

Edit this section and change AllowOverride None to AllowOverride all

Save and quit editor.

Now again restart apache2.

One more thing, in case you are on AWS and installing LAMP on AWS after creating your own vpc, your default user will be ubuntu and owner of /var/www/html is root and you might not have write permission on this directory.

In that case, you can execute following command to change the owner of html folder to current user i.e. ubuntu.

By executing following command.

sudo chown ubuntu /var/www/html

5. Setting up filezilla connection to your ubuntu server using keyfile.

This is easy too.

Open filezilla
Navigate to File > Sitemanager
Click on New site button.
Provide details as follows:

Hostname : your server’s IP address
Port (leave blank)
Connection type : sftp
Username : ubuntu
Keyfile : browse and select .pem file for AWS ec2 server which you have created during server launch.
Click on connect.

Upon connection, you will be able to connect to your server anytime. Navigate to /var/www/html to upload your php project and directory structure will be started root from this directory only.

Hey Hi

Only few of you lazy programmer going to read my few opening paragraph as you are already trying hard to learn how to get into installing LAMP and running your PHP app on AWS server ASAP.

I won’t eat up your much time and i’ll get started right on point.

Before you and i proceed, i believe you have fully setup AWS account and you can login to your console and see these bunch of options which hardly resembles anything from cPanel world.

I myself stuck for days to find out final solution where to start and how to deploy my app finally.

So i am here to help you out.

Let's start.

We’ll proceed as follows.

Setting up AWS virtual server
Setting up connection to the server
Installing LAMP and phpmyadmin
Uploading your first PHP app.

Easy right?

How to Setup up AWS virtual server machine?

Do as follow

Navigate to Compute section
Select EC2.
On next page, you may and may not have already setup EC2 instance, in that case i am going to tell you how to setup new instance.
Click on Blue button “Launch Instance” and get you are ready to launch instance on EC2.

Instance of EC2 is kind of virtual system that we are going to install where you can choose any configuration/security and access based on your need.

Except few thing, you can Change these configuration after launch as well. But be careful for now.

There are various steps involved in this process, let's proceed one by one.

Choose OS

Add caption

You can choose any OS based on your requirement, but since we have planned for LAMP installation, we’ll go for Linux distribution only.

For demonstration purpose, i am choosing free tier as shown in image, in that case only OS option having free tier eligibility will be available to choose.

You can select latest Ubuntu server and mostly 64 bit will be recommended for from IC.

2. Choose Instance type

On next screen, you can choose system based on your budget, you can also have free tier instance having 1 Processor and 1Gb of memory. I am choosing this for demonstration purpose only, you can choose whatever you want and after selection, Click on Next : Configure instance detail to proceed.

3. Configure Instance Details

You can leave this settings as it is but you can change if you need to change on anything. Or simply proceed to next step for adding storage.

4. Add Storage

You can add Free space up to 30Gig(at the time of writing this post) you may see change in this setting according to their own plan. You can proceed next step of adding tags.

5. Add Tags

I haven’t seen any significant use of this yet, still you can add some tags and value to make this instance easy to search in console, if you don’t want to, just proceed to next step.

6. Configure Security Group

Security group are set of rules for inbound and outbound connection for the system that you can define, you can create multiple security group and add different permissions based on that and you can change security group when required.

For our use, we can proceed by creating one security group having following rule as shown in image.

SSH for accessing our site from SSH console.
HTTP for accessing general web pages
HTTPS for accessing secured web pages

7. Review and Launch

You can have look on each of these settings and change anything if you want. If not you are good to go.

Click Launch but

On popup, Make sure to create a new key-pair file if you don’t have any existing key pair file already.

Name new file

And download this file, a pem file will be downloaded. Keep this file safe as without this file you will not be able to access your instance and all is useless.

Once file is downloaded, you can click on launch instance.

This might take few minutes based on your configuration.

You can visit Services > EC2 Dashboard to see list of EC2 instances.

You can select and see details of EC2 instance as shown below.

2. Setting up connection to the server

Once your instance is launched, you can connect your instance using putty like application on windows or simply using terminal on your Linux machine.

Select the instance you want to connect.
Click on the connect button and see instructions.
Open your terminal or putty and based on the location of key files you saved on last step of EC2 configuration setting, you can fire up command

ssh -i "path/to/keyfilename.pem" ubuntu@ec2url.com

This should log you into the ec2 instance from your local machine.

On next post i’ll be telling you how you can install LAMP server and upload your first PHP application along with installing phpmyadmin, enabling htaccess and connecting your server with SFTP using filezilla.

Welcome back to intelligent computing, few days back world face largest attack from a ransomware named WannaCry which infected more than half a million computers across more than 150 countries.

Targeted system being healthcare, logistic services specially. Lets take brief overview of this whole game of WannaCry ransomware and get to the solution fast.

First thing first

What is a ransomware virus?

Just like malware, adware, its another type of malicious file/programme written which basically encrypt or make your data inaccessible by various mean and ask for some sort of ransom to unlock or provide access back to you.

How to protect yourself from WannaCry?

You can opt for following ways to stay safe from these virus. These are

If possible, stop using windows OS. Yes, you can avoid any chances of any sort of infection forever. Go for Free and powerful linux os and they are a lot user friendly and customizable to the way you want it.
If using windows XP, immediately upgrade your system as well as OS to go to at least windows 7 for now if not windows 8.1 or Windows 10. You should know that Windows XP was discontinued to be supported by microsoft in 2014. This mean, there won’t be any fixes or patches will be provided by Microsoft for this OS, which leads to evolution of this virus. There are lots of softwares which are not out of reach of windows XP and is no longer safe to use.
Update your Windows 7, Windows 8, and All your windows. Microsoft has recently provided patch for this virus in March 2017 windows update. So if you haven't updated yet, please go to Windows update section and up to date all fixes on your OS now.
Stay isolated, in case of any system on your network is infected by these sort of ransomware, immediately disconnect your computer and make it isolate from network by turning off wifi/bluetooth/and disconnecting andy LAN cables ASAP.
If you want to use internet in such case, use USB dongle instead of shared network to stay safe and keep other safe from these.
Keep backups: Your documents/mails/photos can have safe backup on Google drive/Dropbox/oneDrive and so many free cloud services where you can keep all your important files and also keep it safe in external hard drive or other PCs to avaoid any kind of risk of data loss.

Seems like we can freely save 20-30 GB of our important documents and files on cloud and all your movies/songs collection can goes into your external drive.

Stay safe with email attachment. Do not open any email attachment and if you are using Local mail client, configure it not to download attachment automatically or allow only certain file type to be download automatically, not all.

How can we recover files from ransomware WannaCry?

First of all, this should be done ASAP after infection is first discovered in system. Chances are you might loose your file permanently if you make even a small mistake and 20% chances are on your luck as well.

First steps

*DO NOT REBOOT* Your infected computer at all.

Disconnect all network links immediately, turn off radio(Wifi/Bluetooth) and disconnect LAN cable connected to your system. Make it offline and isolated ASAP.

Using some USB dongle, or on other system, Download Wanakiwi as per your OS. Its available for windows XP Windows 7 and Windows server as well.

Using USB, put this file on desktop of infected computer if downloaded on some other PC else just save this file on desktop.

How this works?

Wanakiwi basically utilise a flaw in wannaCry itself. Even if we don’t have key for the decryption of files, WannaCry still stores some string of prime numbers which can be used to decrypt files on your infected system.

Problem with this approach is that, this prime number gets stored in volatile storage of your system which might be overwritten or loss if you keep using your system or reboot or sleep your computer.

As soon as you run wanakiwi.exe from your command line by visiting the directory it is placed in, it will automatically start looking for the key.

While it will take some time, it will decrypt all your file if it is succeed in discovering those prime number keys.

What next?

WanaKiwi is been tested and works fine in Windows server, windows XP and windows 7 confirmed.

This process rely on discovery of prime numbers from the memories if it is not overwritten by other memories or reused by other process.

That is why it is advisable not to reboot your pc or use your pc which might cause in erase of those number, in such case you’ll lose access to your files.

Bottom line

WanaKiwi is based on a security loophole of this ransomware virus, this won’t work if your PC is been infected for days or been shut down.

In short, spreading this information and having this information on or before attach is most useful for anyone, that is why i am suggesting you to please share this post as much as possible on your friends social media and let them know and stay alert and at least let them know what to do and what not immediately after the attack

You will have to find if there is any Search engine named Google drive or not, if not, Click on Add New Search Engine.

On the pop-up section you see, Enter the following details to Create Google Drive as your new search engine.

Now Save this settings and close settings tab.

Is it possible to turn on the Switched off/powered down phone remotely?

Thinking about security to some hidden functionality that you want to perform on your devices when its on remote location and switched off, can we really control or power it on?

Years back we had to have Nokia classic Mobile and one great thing always amazed me was, no matter you switch the device off or it automatically turn off due to lack of battery, but it always wake me up in morning, Yes Your alarm can still work even its switched off or in no power mode.

Now its smartphone era and things got quite advanced and too much beyond this.

What Happens when device is in Switched off mode?

Actually, most of your device is having continuous battery power supply all the time, for years. Iif We talk about smartphone. Tablets and laptop, it seems obvious that they have battery so, battery must be supplying power.

Switch off a device at certain charged battery percentage for 2 3 days and once you switch back it on, it won’t be showing you same battery percentage, but less by 1-2% at least. Whats going on?

And what about physically power connected device like your desktop? Yes even they are always awake, Almost always.

All these Device has two universe, one we use, so called OS part where we interact and do our daily work.

Another is, Hardware firmware, Where there is lots of programme and process goes on all the time, and when we boot-up our devices or shut it down. That hardware devices, embedded with come firmware always working.

Just think for moment, how your devices knows current time when it wakes up? Its all stored and running continously in your hardware. It keeps using power and keeps running, Be a Computer or mobile devices, Most of the time, even when there battery or power is not connected, all of these devices are supplied with internal battery for supplying power when there is no external power.

In computer devices, We might have saw that called CMOS battery.

According to a Korean researcher SeungJin Lee & Seungjoo Kim have demonstrated this on Samsung smart TVs at black hat [ HACKING, SURVEILLING, AND DECEIVING VICTIMS ON SMART TV ] this year, they mention that some malware was originally designed for smartphone actually.

And we know, turning on a device is never an issue when its never was in fully switched off mode.

How remotely turning back on could work?

Firmware is capable or running many programs written on their low level languages. Injecting a malware to firmware that keeps listening some port of network where we can trigger them to turn device on, is the way we can think of.

Lots of hidden background processes like monitoring system time/date, any software event/instructions which might trigger wakeup event to the device just like alarm or now automatic powering on options that are in many smartphone these days for example, are always in listening mode when device is off.

Putting phone on Aeroplane mode which turn off all the network access and radio, and putting it in power down mode might seems a solution for remote wakeup hack but wait a minute. NO, Internally running Malware can wake up these radios and turn aeroplane mode off to resume all network services.

What required for implementing this?

2 Word, Physical Access to your device at first is needed. These malware can be inserted only when your device is rooted, be it a smartphone or Smart TV, upon rooting these can be injecting into firmware and according to the design of malware, your device will be controlled.

So Physical security is must and best.

Are we safe?

That's why everyone says rooting is dangerous to your device, and if your device is rooted, random apps/background malware can be installed through some misunderstood links on your device, which can not only access your firmware but also can be used to spy on you using your camera and microphone.

Points for your device safety

Put your device physically safe from wrong hands.

Keep your phone and their apps including OS updated, this reduce lots of risk of being your device open for hackers.

Until you are expert and going to experiment on your device, do not root your phone.

Keep your phone clean and do not install crappy apps that do nothing but stealing your informations.

They are both solutions for managing multiple virtual operating systems, but the major difference between the two mobile solutions is that VDIs require an on-site physical host server, which organizes payloads and that DaaS solutions require all virtual machinesbe moved on a cloud.

Of course, there are advantages and disadvantages on both sides, and knowing them, makes it a lot easier to see what fits your business profile.

VDI – Need to Know

VDI, or virtual desktop infrastructure, is an in-door business solution which focuses on hosting virtual desktop instances on a local server that is maintained by an IT department. Although hosting a VDI can be more expensive than deploying your virtual desktops on a cloud server, run by a third-party developer, most companies have stated that this solution is considered safer than the alternative.

With VDI, all that you’ll need in order to keep the company running is located inside your own building. This means around the clock security, low firewall access and the immediate possibility of retrieving information from the server if anything goes wrong.

Also, VDI has another advantage over cloud-based business solutions: obtaining licenses. Since DaaS services are fairly new, many large business software developers like Microsoft don’t have solutions that reduce extra costs. Instead, you can always find a cost-efficient solution for a virtual desktop infrastructure.

DaaS – Need to Know

DaaS, or desktop as a service, is a relatively new kind of desktop virtualization service. So, instead of putting together a backyard server that manages, distributes and reallocates resources, all virtual desktops are directly deployed to a third-party cloud-based service provider.

Desktop as a Service has one great advantage over VDI solution: it does not require an in-door server for users to access their desktops. All the information is transferred to the cloud, users being capable of remote accessing their virtual desktop application from anywhere in the world and from any number of devices, provided that they have the propercredentials.

One would ask why so many companies opt for VDI over a DaaS solution. The truth is that not many CEOs are not at ease with submitting the company’s information to third-party cloud vendors. Information is precious and with hackers targeting more and more cloud-based servers, everybody keeps on wondering whether packing up and going cloud is the best solution.

VDI vs. DaaS – The Battle of the Giants Continues

Should you opt for VDI orDaaS? The answer to this question is pretty easy: the company’s profile. Ask yourself whether a VDI is worth the effort, or if it’s totally safe to transfer the most sensitive data to a cloud vendor.

The main advantage of switching to a VDI solution is that the ball’s in your court. You, or rather your IT department, controls everything from how the servers handleall assigned tasks, to recovering your data in case something goes wrong.

The main disadvantage of actually owning your very own VDI is that the maintenance costs will skyrocket in no time, starting from operational costs to keeping around an entire IT department whose sole purpose is to keep tabs on the machine.

Also, another disadvantage of VDIs is the actual physical part. The VDI works pretty much like any other servers. So, this means plenty of cables and beeping lights.

Although, many are reserved in making this commitment, the truth is that a VDI lets you control all the data streams more efficiently and directly than cloud-based services. Security is another issue you should take into account when opting for a virtual desktop solution.

VDI employ safeguards at every point to prevent data theft. As for DaaS, with all the data transferred to thecloud, a possible malware attack may result in massive data loss.

As mentioned before, DaaS services are considered a new addition to the smart business solution market. Virtual desktops can be migrated to the cloud, thus cutting some of the costs associated with maintaining physical, virtual desktop infrastructure.

The main advantage of opting for a cloud-based solution is many cloud providers are open to negotiation, based on the number of virtual of devices you would want to transfer. On top of that, cloud vendors like Backblazehave decent monthly offers starting from 5 dollars per personal plans or 50 dollars per year for a business plan.

Compared to VDI solutions vendors that can tax as much as 505,000 dollars for 1000 users for a Citrix XenDesktop solutions, DaaSs are quite affordable.

And there’s the matter of connectivity. If you opt for a VDI, then connectivity won’t be an issue, since the hosting server will be under your control. Users working on virtual machines hosted on a cloud server have complained about low latencies and crippling connectivity issues that have led to massive data loss.

However, every cloud storage service has many protocols that prevent this sort of situation, and, in case this scenario happens, cloud vendors are obligated to reimburse your data loss.

DaaS solutions may take the strain off your IT department, but that doesn’t mean that it’s for the better. On top of that, we should also consider the license issue. Since DaaSs are somewhat new to the market, contractors usually have anissue receiving business-oriented software license.

Customization is also a matter we should address. VDI is described as a highly-customizable end-user environment. Ironically, cloud-based virtualization services, whose core philosophy rests on mobility and flexibility, don’t offer the same easiness when it comes to configuring terminals.

All these matters must be addressed before the company makes a decision. Also, it would be good to solicit additional information from your cloud or VDI provider before signing the contract.

How to add jQuery pagination to any table in minute?

Pagination is one of most common things we face everywhere, wherever there is no infinite scrolling. Pagination can be achieved server side with php as well, but those is bit slower and require multiple request again and again to site or you need to precisely use ajax, but what if you want simpler solution, that’s going to be great for you and user as well.

What’s my idea?

Instead of downloading list of 10 row per request from server each time user navigate through pages, why not download 100 or even more list once, that will need just moment to download and no additional effort to server, and using pagination hide rest of 90 rows, using client side pagination of tables we can navigate to those 100 records without making much effort, and even if user want more, only in that case we can download further list.

Simple, users don’t have to wait again and again to refresh page, get 10 more data, again refresh, and so on. Instead user will be having lightning access to all 100 record or whatever number you have at once.

So lets get started

What you’ll need.

1. You have to have jquery Google ajax api, that you can get from here.

2. Any html/PHP page where you have table, you can deploy this code.

Initiating pagination in table

Proceed as follows to adding pagination in your table.

Adding Google ajax api in your html head section

First of all, you need to add, Google jquery library to initiate this JavaScript. Just navigate to <head> of your site and add

Adding pagination class to your table

First of all, you have to add class “paginated-table” in your table as follows
