Pacquiao OKs June 9 bout with Timothy Bradley

Michael Koncz, Manny Pacquiao's adviser, confirmed Monday (Tuesday in Manila) that the eight-time world division champion has agreed to fight fellow stablemate Timothy Bradley this year.

Pacquiao (54-3-2, with 38 knockouts) will defend his World Boxing Organization (WBO) welterweight belt against the reigning junior welterweight champion on June 9 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

"From our end, the fight is done. I just got off the phone with (Top Rank's) Bob Arum and Manny, so we're done. I don't assume there will be a problem from the Bradley side," said Koncz, in a report by ESPN boxing writer Dan Rafael.

Koncz, who met with Top Rank CEO Bob Arum before discussing the details of the meeting to Pacquiao, said the Filipino boxing icon has approved the terms of the fight.

Bradley has yet to finalize the deal and has been discussing the details of the fight with Top Rank president Todd duBoef.

"We are going to be having further conversations with Bradley and his management early this week and hopefully finalize the deal," duBoef said. "But the truth is my (promotional) agreement with Bradley lays out certain parameters for a Pacquiao fight, so there is a framework already."

Floyd Mayweather Jr., Miguel Cotto, Lamont Peterson and Juan Manuel Marquez were the other names considered to be Pacquiao's first opponent in 2012. Mayweather decided to face Cotto after he once again failed to come to terms with Team Pacquiao.

Cotto, meanwhile, opted to challenge Mayweather after he and Pacquiao failed to agree on the weight of their rematch. Pacquiao wanted the fight at 147-pounds.

Bradley (28-0, 12 KOs), 28, of Palm Springs, Calif., if he agrees to challenge Paqcuiao, will be moving up in weight from 140 to 147 lbs.

"We've been talking about this for over a month and we always had a Plan B in case Mayweather didn't happen," Koncz said. "Last time I went to the Philippines, I took Manny tapes of all of the opponents we were talking about and he watched them with his wife, Jinkee. The Llamados are out to erase the stigma of their crushing defeat in the Philippine Cup when they – as the top-seeded team – lost to No. 8 Powerade in the quarterfinals, thus becoming the first No. 1 seed to suffer the humiliation.

Game time is 7:30 p.m. with B-Meg out to reaffirm its mastery over Meralco while Alaska tackles Barako Bull at 5:15 p.m.

Denzel Bowles will be the Llamados' reinforcement in this tournament serving as the league’s second conference.

The 6-foot-10 center from Virginia Beach averaged 17.6 points, 8.8 rebounds and 2.2 assists during his stint at James Madison University in 2010-11.

The Llamados also beefed up their lineup by adding JC Intal in a three-team trade that sent Kerby Raymundo to Barangay Ginebra. Barako Bull was also involved in the deal.

Two-time Most Valuable Player James Yap, Peter June Simon, Marc Pingris, rookie Mark Barroca and Josh Urbiztondo will lead the Llamados against the Bolts, who were eliminated in the quarters by Petron.

Meralco will have former Seattle Supersonics center Jelani McCoy as import but he’s a doubtful starter after he suffered an injury in a recent practice. Jarrid Famous is the team’s standby import.

Meanwhile, the Energy and the Aces have fielded in a pair of formidable imports for this conference.

Barako Bull acquired 6-foot-9 DerMarr Johnson, a former first round draft pick of the Atlanta Hawks in the 2000 NBA Draft, while Alaska signed Mexican center Adam Parada who once played for the original Red Bull franchise in the 2008 Fiesta Conference.

Parada will be backstopped by LA Tenorio and rookie Mac Baracael as Alaska aims to improve on its disappointing Philippine Cup campaign where it failed to enter the quarters.

Pacquiao Vs Bradley Looming In Horizon

MANILA, Philippines — Manny Pacquiao has narrowed down his choice to Miguel Cotto and Tim Bradley after being told that it’s becoming hopeless to aspire for a super showdown with Floyd Mayweather in the near future.

Pacquiao told the Bulletin that Hall of Fame promoter Bob Arum is working hard to put a deal in place for a June 9 fight in Las Vegas and that while Cotto is the lead candidate to land the lucrative payday, Bradley is not far behind.

Making a deal for a Cotto fight, however, has hit a wall after the Puerto Rican insisted that he is not willing to give in to Pacquiao’s demand that he drop to 147 lbs, saying he can go down not lower than 150 lbs because it’s been a while since he fought below 150 lbs.

“That’s what concerns me right now,” said Pacquiao, who had stopped Cotto in the 12th round in their Nov. 2009 battle.

With Cotto now more inclined to entertain an offer from Mayweather, who is looking for a dancing partner for his May 5 fight, the name of Bradley is now being floated.

But while the unbeaten Bradley is an attractive alternative to Cotto, Pacquiao admits that Bradley doesn’t have a strong fanbase at the moment that could help him reach greater heights on pay-per-view sales.

“Yeah, I know,” said Pacquiao when told about Bradley’s lack of name-recall.

Still, regardless of who will end up being picked as his next opponent, Pacquiao said he would set up camp in Baguio City for the initial phase of his preparation.

Pacquiao, 33, is coming off a hard-earned majority decision win over Juan Manuel Marquez and is eager to get back to the ring to show his fans and followers that he remains as the world’s No. 1 fighter.

Mike Koncz, the fighter’s adviser, should be arriving in Manila from the US any day now to finalize the details of Pacquiao’s next fight.

Pacquiao's foe still a mystery

MANILA, Philippines — The guessing game as to the identity of Manny Pacquiao’s next foe continues.

Top Rank chief Bob Arum, who was in the country for five days last week, is keeping his mouth shut, telling the Bulletin from his Las Vegas lair yesterday to “talk to you in a couple of days.”

Even Pacquiao’s Canadian adviser Mike Koncz likewise declined to utter something peppery, more at ease with doing the same thing as Arum as Team Pacquiao continues to nurse hopes that a megabuck match with Floyd Mayweather can be made.

Before heading back to the US over the weekend, Arum clarified that excluding Mayweather from the short list of fighters being looked is not a good idea even though he himself had scratched him off from the roster.

Mayweather’s statement that became viral on the Internet on the same day Arum flew back to the US may have something to do with Arum’s decision to reconsider.

Still, just about everyone could not categorically say who would it be despite reports circulating that Miguel Cotto will be tapped once it can be determined that a Mayweather match cannot be made at least for late-May or early-June.

Trainer Freddie Roach has been very vocal about seeing Pacquiao face off with Mayweather but has mellowed down a bit, saying he prefers Tim Bradley over Cotto.

Speaking to the online edition of The Ring magazine, the 51-year-old Roach said Pacquiao will likely beat up Cotto in a rematch.

“I’d rather go with Bradley, because the Cotto thing is probably going to end the same way, I think,” said Roach, referring to the one-sided beatdown Pacquiao administered to the Puerto Rican in Nov. 2009.

Even though Cotto has been on a three-fight winning streak after losing to Pacquiao, Roach still believes “the same thing is going to happen as the last time.”

Roach added: “At least with Tim Bradley, he has two pretty good punches and a really good headbutt, so that’s something different to be concerned about.”

While Arum explores the possibilties for a Pacquiao-Mayweather clash in the coming days, Pacquiao will revert back to his old ways.

“He’ll be going back to congress then we’ll have a shoot for Nike this weekend,” said Koncz, who presided over Pacquiao’s recent shoot for Hennessy cognac with the help of Top Rank marketing executive Lucia Mckelvey.

Fight to the very end

MANILA, Philippines — Defending champion Talk ’N Text and Rain or Shine are oozing with confidence following their big wins in Game 6 that enabled them to force do-or-die games against their respective rivals in the PBA Philippine Cup semifinal playoffs.

Though momentums are on their side, TNT’s Chot Reyes and ROS’s Yeng Guiao are careful and cautious about their predictions on what will happen in Game 7 of their respective series.

Both Reyes and Guiao believe that anything can happen since both Petron Blaze and Powerade have what it takes to challenge them, perhaps give them hell.

But one thing is sure, the drama will not end tomorrow.

The finals will be another best-of-seven affair, so fans expect more color and perhaps much intense action.

The Painters and the Tigers clash at 5:15 p.m. with the boys of Guiao determined to tame the Tigers for the second straight game to advance to the finals for the first time since joining the league in 2006.

Reyes’ Texters follow suit as they collide with the Petron Boosters at 7:30 p.m. where they are hoping to become the third team in league history to come back from a 3-1 deficit in a best-of-seven series.

A win could be a fitting gift for their owners – Raymund Yu and Terry Que who have been longing to play in the finals in the pro league.

During their PBL days, the team of Yu and Que – the Welcoat Paints – has won numerous titles that they won a Dynasty award in 1997.

Still, winning Game 6 is not a guarantee of winning Game 7, according to Guiao. But they will try their very best to help their owners fulfill their dreams.

“This is the biggest game for our franchise. It’s only proper that we give it our biggest effort. The stats and other numbers don’t matter anymore (in a Game 7). It is pure heart and desire we’ve invested too much in this series to let it go any other way but ours,” he added.

Guaio is hoping that the long playing minutes in the series on Powerade’s ‘Big Three’ of Gary David, Marcio Lassiter and JV Casio would take its toll come Game 7.

David and Lassiter each scattered 30 points in Game 6 but logged in 40-plus minutes, while Casio was on the floor for 36 minutes but struggled with seven points on 2-of-6 shooting from the field after dropping 25 markers in a 110-108 win in Game 6.

Guiao is confident that his players will have fresher legs, owing to a rotation that plays a 12-man rotation – as compared to Powerade’s eight – with rookie Paul Lee and Jeff Chan logging in the most with at least 30 minutes in the series.

“Their top players, David and Lassiter, and even Casio are playing longer minutes. Hopefully at some point (in Game 7) they get tired. On our side, we can still run because we’re playing a rotation of lesser minutes to our players,” said Guiao.

Aside from Lee and Chan, Guiao will rely on his other mainstays like Gabe Norwood, Ronjay Buenafe, Ryan Arana, Beau Belga, Larry Rodriguez, Ronnie Matias, JR Quinahan, Jireh Ibañez, TY Tang and Ronnie Martias.

As for Powerade, coach Bo Perasol said that they are well motivated to win the series, saying: “It’s going to be a game of will. Whoever would fight to win until the end will get the win. Our team intends to do just that.”

Like Guiao, Reyes said they have to bring their A-game to complete their amazing comeback in the series. Reyes expects Petron to come out strong as well and match their intensity.

“Of course not,” said Reyes when asked if he can guarantee a win. “All we did was to tie the series. Guaranteeing anything in life is the surest path to heartache.”

Meantime, the PBA Commissioner’s Office fined Powerade center Alex Crisano P20,000 and TNT center Ali Peek P10,000 after their respective Flagrant Foul 1 were upgraded to F2 following a review by Commissioner Chito Salud and his technical team.

Peek and Crisano, however, are still available for Game 7.

D-LEAGUE ASPIRANTS

Blackwater played with aggressiveness, particularly in the second half, to beat RnW Pacific Pipes, 65-48, for the last berth in the quarterfinals.

The Elite finished the elimination round with an even 5-5 slate to tie idle Boracay Rum for fifth. But they will enter the quarters as the No. 5 seed and will face No. 4 Big Chill tomorrow at the Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig City.

In the other game, North Luzon Expressway (NLEX) posted another lopsided victory, blasting CaféFrance, 107-89.

Rain or Shine ties series

MANILA, Philippines — The flames haven’t flared out yet from the hands of Powerade’s Gary David. But even he felt the searing heat from Rain or Shine’s third quarter blast in Game Four Tuesday night.

Fueled by the bitter taste of Sunday’s overtime defeat in Game Three, the Elasto Painters raced on all cylinders, blowing out the Tigers,110-95, to level at 2-2 their PBA Philippine Cup semifinal series at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.

“We needed to step on the gas,” said Rain or Shine coach Yeng Guiao. “Kailangan nakatapak ka lagi sa pedal kasi pag nag-relax ka, kakanin ka ng Powerade.”

Jeff Chan had 19 points and Paul Lee added 15 while three other Painters were also in double figures, complementing a clamped-down defense that forced the Tigers to miss 54 of 84 shots, including 19 of 32 triples.

David had his sixth straight 30-point game, hitting 10 in the fourth quarter. But the Powerade fireball was just 5 of 14 from 3-point range and 4 of 9 from within, numbers that were anything but fiery compared to his previous scorching performances.

“Pure and simple, we were outplayed,” said Powerade mentor Bo Perasol. “Their backs were against the wall and maybe they were really motivated. There’s nothing technical about it. We were outhustled, outplayed.”

Rain or Shine came prepared for Powerade’s zone.

“We knew we were going to see that defense again and we were ready,” said Guiao, adding in jest. “We didn’t shoot 10 percent this time. Siguro mga 11 percent naman ngayon.”

Sensing perhaps that another costly mistake as in Game Three would have direr consequences, the Elasto Painters came up with their finest performance so far, burying the Tigers in the second half.

From a 53-45 halftime lead, built on the strength of a defensive stand that forced Powerade to miss 28 of 43 shots, including 13 three-point attempts, the Elasto Painters broke the game open, 79-61, on the way to several 20-point spreads early in the fourth.

David went 2 of 8 from beyond the arc in the first half, Marcio Lassiter 0 for 6 overall, and Romel Adducul 0 for 4, the Tigers’ fire extinguished after that 104-99 overtime victory last Sunday.

Chan and JR Quinahan each had five points, including a triple apiece, during a 14-3 run that opened a 69-50 advantage midway in the third period where Powerade’s shooting woes continued.

Drained from Rain or Shine’s relentless attack, the Tigers went 6 of 23 in the quarter and the Elasto Painters picked up a 12 points off seven Powerade turnovers.

The other semifinal matchup, meanwhile, goes into a critical stage when Petron Blaze guns for a 3-1 lead over defending champion Talk ‘N Text at 6:45 tonight at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.

Only two teams have come back after trailing 1-3 and the Tropang Texters are expected to throw caution to the wind to avert falling into that dilemma against the team which denied them a Grand Slam finish last season.

TNT won the series opener, 87-83. But Petron took the next two games, 91-89 and 95-93, the second fashioned after Alex Cabagnot buried a top-of-the-key 3-point shot with 12 seconds remaining in Game Three to cap an incredible comeback from 20 points down last Sunday.

Arum, Pacquiao in crucial talk

MANILA, Philippines — Hall of Fame promoter Bob Arum said Floyd Mayweather will be on the agenda when he begins a series of meeting with Manny Pacquiao during his five-day stay in the country.

Arum arrived in Manila from Los Angeles early yesterday morning and should be able to have something concrete when he heads back to the US this weekend to finalize the details of Pacquiao’s much-awaited ring return on June 2 or June 9 in Las Vegas.

“There’d be lots of things to talk about,” said the 80-year-old Arum, who will discuss with the Filipino fighter the pros and cons of all four fighters that are on the list of possible foes.

Tim Bradley, Juan Manuel Marquez, Lamont Peterson and Miguel Cotto are being eyed as rivals and Arum said a formal announcement can be made as early as next week.

Mayweather will also get a sizeable amount of time during the talks but Arum said it won’t be for a fight he is planning for June not only because a bigger stadium is needed to host such a mega fight but Mayweather himself is not keen on facing Pacquiao in the immediate future.

Mayweather will fight on May 5 at the MGM Grand and among those being looked at are lightweight Robert Guerrero of the US and Saul Alvarez of Mexico.

However, a Pacquiao-Mayweather clash would be perfect for a November date, noted Arum, adding that a 40,000-capacity makeshift arena can be put up on the Las Vegas strip courtesy of casino magnates Steve Wynn and Sheldon Adelson.

Pacquiao said he is not veering away from a face-off with Mayweather and the fact that he has agreed to Olympic-style testing and a smaller cut on the revenue speak of his genuine intentions to meet the unbeaten American in the ring.

PBA semifinalists shake Christmas rust

MANILA, Philippines — After a brief holiday break, the four teams that advanced to the semis of the 37th PBA Philippine Cup resumed practice sessions on Monday in preparation for next week’s best-of-seven playoffs.

Defending champion Talk ’N Text had a light workout at the Moro Lorenzo Gym in Ateneo University in the afternoon while Powerade had a practice session at the same venue in the morning.

Rain or Shine also had a light practice at the Northeast Green Hills gym in San Juan City, while Petron Blaze players opted to work first on their cardiovascular condition inside the fitness room.

It was the first training for all four teams after their respective coaching staff gave players several days of rest and to celebrate Christmas with their loved ones.

“We had a good workout, just a light one to get the players return to their playing condition,” said Rain or Shine mentor Yeng Guiao. “Even with the long break, these players know how to stay in shape.”

The Elasto Painters arranged a seven-game showdown against the Tigers, who stunned top seed and twice-to-beat B-Meg Llamados in their quarterfinal playoff, after they swept the Barangay Ginebra Kings (2-0) in the best-of-three quarters’ series.

Guiao said that they have yet to fully prepare for Powerade as far as the strategy against their semis opponent is concerned.

“We’ll do that in the coming days, particularly on what type of defense we’ll have against Powerade,” said Guiao, who likes his team’s chances against the Tigers whom they downed in their lone game in the eliminations (96-93).

As for Powerade coach Bo Perasol, he said some of his Fil-American players opted not to have a vacation in the United States, instead, the likes of Marcio Lassiter, Sean Anthony, Josh Vanlandingham and Will Antonio decided to stay in the country as they prepare for the semis.

“Nobody asked permission to go to the US. Everybody understands that this chance does not come often. We have to make sacrifices and we are happy doing it,” Perasol said, whose team is in the Final Four for the first time in seven years, or since the 2004 Fiesta Cup.

Talk ’N Text, on the other hand, resumed practice without the injured reigning MVP Jimmy Alapag (ankle), forward Ranidel de Ocampo (calf) and veteran center Ali Peek (gunshot wound in the nape).

However, Reyes said he’s hoping that the three can rejoin the team’s training this week.

As for Petron, which had a 0-2 record versus TNT during the eliminations, assistant coach Gee Abanilla said that the team will take a rest on Tuesday but will resume on Wednesday at the Acropolis Gym.

Game 1 of the Rain or Shine and Powerade series is set to start Jan. 4, 2012 at the Cuneta Astrodome in Pasay City, while the series-opener of the TNT and Petron is scheduled to begin the following day at the same venue.

Floyd is out for now

MANILA, Philippines — Now that the dream fight with Floyd Mayweather Jr. is out of the question at least until the first half of 2012 after the American fighter was sentenced to 90 days for his legal troubles, Manny Pacquiao said there are other attractive alternatives down the road although nothing beats the match between the two claimants to the mythical title of pound-for-pound king.

“There are other options and we will move on,” said Pacquiao adviser Mike Koncz yesterday moments after learning about Mayweather’s sentencing by a Nevada court for domestic violence and harassment.

Koncz said that while Mayweather is their priority, there is no other choice but to look elsewhere.

Heading the short list of candidates to land a lucrative Pacquiao payday are Mexican Juan Manuel Marquez, American Tim Smith and Puerto Rican Miguel Cotto.

Mayweather guilty, faces jail time

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr. could be jailed for up to 18 months after deciding to plead guilty to reduced misdemeanor charges in a deal which resolves felony allegations that he battered his ex-girlfriend, court officials said Tuesday.

Mayweather, 34, will face $3,000 in fines and could be sentenced to between two days and 18 months in the Clark County jail after agreeing to plead guilty Wednesday to one count of battery domestic violence and two harassment charges, said Tess Driver, an aide to Clark County District Attorney David Roger.

The Las Vegas Review-Journal first reported the plea deal Tuesday.

It also includes an agreement for Mayweather to plead no contest next week to misdemeanor battery and pay a $1,000 fine for poking a 21-year-old homeowner association security guard in the face during a November 2010 argument about parking tickets on vehicles outside the boxer's home in an exclusive, suburban Las Vegas community.

Roger and Mayweather's lawyers did not immediately respond to messages from The Associated Press.

Mayweather had been facing an evidence hearing Wednesday and a decision by Las Vegas Justice of the Peace Melissa Saragosa whether to send him to trial on felony grand larceny, coercion and robbery charges, and misdemeanor domestic battery and harassment counts involving ex-girlfriend Josie Harris.

He could have faced 34 years in state prison if he was convicted of all those charges.

The felony case stemmed from accusations that Mayweather hit and threatened his ex-girlfriend, stole her cell phone and threatened two of their children, then ages 10 and 9, during a September 2010 argument about the woman dating another man.

Different scenarios for PBA semis

MANILA, Philippines — The Final Four series of the PBA Philippine Cup is not only very interesting but promises to be also an explosive one.

The semis will start early next year with the showdown between Rain or Shine and Powerade whose lineups feature the league’s outstanding rookies: Paul Lee for the Painters and the duo of JV Casio and Marcio Lassiter for the Tigers.

The second pairing, on the other hand, pitting Talk ‘N Text and Petron, are teams loaded with stars and a bench so deep that members of their second units can pass as starters for other teams.

This game also has a subplot. The Texters will be fired with a different motivation besides gaining the finals. They want revenge against the team that beat them in the Third Conference that prevented them from achieving the rare PBA grand slam.

The Elasto Painters and the Tigers will first collide on Jan. 4, 2012 at the Astrodome in Pasay City, while the Tropang Texters will clash with the Boosters the following day at the same venue.

The PBA Commissioner’s Office – in a joint venture with AKTV – decided to split the semifinal showdowns from Games 1 to 4 in the hope that consecutive games make for more fan interest.

TNT and Powerade clinched the first two semifinal berths, with the former beating Barako Bull (81-79) last week, while the latter stunned top seed and twice-to-beat B-Meg, including in their do-or-die game with an overtime victory (131-123).

Rain or Shine and Petron completed the Final Four cast by sweeping their respective best-of-three showdowns against Barangay Ginebra and Meralco, respectively.

The Beermen outscored the Patriots in the early going of the payoff period with import Richard Jeter scoring five in a 7-0 run to pull away en route to victory that augured well for the team’s debut in the third AirAsia ASEAN Basketball League firing off Jan. 14.

After a see-saw battle in the first quarter, the Beermen came through with several spurts to take a 41-33 lead at halftime. The Patriots came to within one, 56-57, at the end of the third but the Beermen unleashed a strong opening kick in the fourth to seize control.

Anthony Johnson and Jun Jun Cabatu fired 17 points apiece while Fil-Am Chris Banchero and Jeter finished with 16 and 14 points, respectively.

Despite the setback, Patriots’ coach Glenn Capacio saw some positive signs he hopes to build on for their bid to reclaim the ABL crown.

“They deserved to win, they have prepared long while we were still trying to jell as a team,” said Capacio.

He, however, vowed to work things out to be ready and be a contender again in the upcoming tournament.

“Our advantage is that we already have an idea on what kind of opposition we would be facing. But we have to prepare better since all teams are very competitive,” Capacio said.

But with the Beermen in the fold, Patriots team manager Erick Arejola said things could be a lot tougher for the Patriots, who ruled the league’s inaugural staging but lost the crown last year.

David responds to giant challenge

MANILA, Philippines — Gary David of Powerade took it as a personal challenge when critics gave them no chance against the top-seeded B-Meg in their do-or-die quarterfinal playoffs in the PBA Philippine Cup.

“I read in the internet that we have no chance in hell of winning against B-Meg,” said David, who refused to mention who said it and where he saw the post after the Tigers stunned the Llamados in overtime, 131-123, Sunday night at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.

The win propelled Powerade to the best-of-seven semifinal series starting Jan. 4 against the winner of the three-game quarterfinals between Barangay Ginebra and Rain or Shine.

The ROS Painters lead the series after posting a gripping 112-105 overtime win over Ginebra.

The Elasto Painters will try to end the series when they face the Kings in Game 2 Wednesday at the Ynares Sports Center in Antipolo City.

The 6-foot-1 David, the leading scorer during the elimination round with 20.79 points a game, torched the B-Meg defense with 37 points, 10 of which came in the extra five-minute period highlighted by two booming three-pointers.

David actually made eight triples, including one near the end of regulation that tied the score at 115-115, which forced OT.

“I just want to help the team win. I was struggling early, but was fired up when that fight happened,” David said, referring to the altercation when teammate Celino Cruz was ejected with 7:12 to play in the third period after elbowing B-Meg’s Josh Urbiztondo in the chest.

Cruz charged at Urbiztondo after the latter taunted him, but was restrained by B-Meg forward Marc Pingris. It was David who went after Urbiztondo but was pacified by teammates as well as B-Meg coach Tim Cone.

Before that incident, David, who had 32 points in the Tigers’ 97-88 win over B-Meg that stretched the series to sudden-death, was struggling with only nine points.

“I know that I can count on him, I told him don’t foul out since he had five fouls. I need him inside,” Powerade mentor Bo Perasol said. “He’s the one who salvaged the game for us. Every player made their contribution but the biggest contribution came from him.”

Pacquiao agrees to smaller purse

MANILA, Philippines — The ball is now in Floyd Mayweather’s court.

Manny Pacquiao said from his home in General Santos City that he is going the extra mile in making sure the proposed super fight with the brash and unbeaten American fighter finally happens in 2012.

Pacquiao is willing to take the smaller piece of the pie as long as the dream fight takes place.

“Walang problema kahit pa mas maliit ang premyo ko,” said Pacquiao, who turned 33 on Saturday. “Ang importante ay matuloy lang ang laban.”

Pacquiao’s pronouncement that he is giving Mayweather the lion’s share of the pot only puts credence that he is moving heaven and earth to make it happen.

The subject of random blood testing is apparently a non-issue now since Arum had mentioned many times in the past month or so that Pacquiao has agreed to Mayweather’s demands.

Arum is arriving in Manila in the first week of January to discuss Pacquiao’s future.

On their radar screen of course is Mayweather and a few other guys in case the fight the world is aching to see doesn’t materialize.

Arum is looking at a fourth fight between Pacquiao and Juan Manuel Marquez, while waiting on the wings are undefeated Tim Bradley and even Miguel Cotto, who is hot on the comeback trail.

The target date for the Pacquiao-Mayweather showdown is May 2012.

Marquez has also expressed his willingness to rumble with Pacquiao again, saying that he might just hang up his gloves in case a fourth match with his rival is shelved.

Bradley also wants a piece of Pacquiao owing to the fortune that such a fight would bring.

Cotto, who lost to Pacquiao on a 12th-round stoppage two years ago, has also expressed his desire to be given a shot at payback most specially that he has a new set of trainers.

Ringsiders are of the belief that Pacquiao decided to take a smaller percentage of the revenue knowing that he has a solid shot at dealing Mayweather his first loss.

Inflicting Mayweather his first defeat, according to them, would compensate Pacquiao's take-home pay.

The Llamados, who had a twice-to-beat advantage, were aiming for an early entry to the semi-finals but were derailed by the 8th-seeded Tigers.

Gary David scored 32 points in the first three quarters, while rookie Marcio Lassiter scored 24 and Doug Kramer had a double-double performance with 13 points and 10 rebounds.

"Our players have no doubt in their minds that they can compete," Powerade coach Bo Perasol told PBA.ph. "We've forced a KO (knockout) game and we'll take our chances."

Powerade snapped B-Meg's 8-game winning streak as they came out of the gates sharper than the league's top team.

The Tigers built an 11-point lead, 50-39, at halftime thanks to the hot 3-point shooting of David, JV Casion, Rudy Lingganay and Josh Vanlandingham, who combined for 7 trifectas in the first half alone.

James Yap managed to rally the Llamados by scoring 15 of his 24 points in the second half, but B-Meg could not overcome their poor start.

The two teams tussle again on Sunday, December 18, with the winner of that contest advancing to the second round of the playoffs.

TNT bags 1st semis slot

Using his quickness and sharpness – not to mention his resilience – the 5-foot-10 Castro was almost everywhere, hustling and scoring at every opportunity to shatter his previous best of 24 points which he set last year.

But more than that, he helped TNT earn another trip to the semis which was expected from them even before the start of the season.

His final basket for the night could perhaps go down as one of the highlights of his career as he did it against a 6-foot-4 Dylan Ababou.

Viloria's future at stake Sunday

MANILA, Philippines — Brian Viloria is on the crossroads of a roller-coaster career and the result of his clash Sunday with Mexican knockout king Giovani Segura should determine whether fight fans would still be seeing more of him in the future.

Viloria, who makes the first defense of the World Boxing Organization flyweight crown against a mandatory challenger in Segura, said he has his sights trained on fighting in the next two years but he will set aside those dreams at least in the final hours leading to today’s showdown at the Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig.

Viloria and Segura know each other’s styles, having sparred many times in the past but the Filipino-American puncher believes has what it takes to repulse his latest rival’s bold challenge.

“I have trained long and hard and I know what to do,” said Viloria, assuring that the crowd will be in for a treat since the fight will be “intense and pretty competitive.”

“A great fight, a great battle,” added Viloria, who has a 29-3-0 win-loss-draw card with 18 knockouts.

Segura is likewise driven to perform well, citing life’s hardships as a motivation.

Moments after scaling in also at 112 lbs, Segura said he is looking beyond the Viloria bout.

"I am saving my money, my coins to get a house for my family. This is just another step,” said Segura, who parades a menacing 28-1-0 slate packed with 24 knockouts, including 11 in the very first round.

Segura is slightly favored to win but Viloria is the type of guy not to be counted out, having scored two of his most impressive wins against Mexicans like Segura.

The quarterfinal opponents of Ginebra and TNT will not be known until after today’s matches.

The Texters claimed the first twice-to-beat following a come-from-behind 80-78 win over Petron Blaze last Tuesday.

Alapag is a doubtful starter after he twisted his left ankle versus Petron, and so is fellow guard Jason Castro (calf muscle). Already in the injured list are center Ali Peek (gunshot wound in the nape), guard Ryan Reyes (MCL), as well as forwards Jared Dillinger (ankle) and Aaron Aban (ACL).

That forced TNT mentor Chot Reyes to add the likes of little-known players Bam-Bam Gamalinda and Shawn Weinstein to play alongside mainstays Kelly Williams, Harvey Carey, Larry Fonacier, Aguilar and rookie Pamboy Raymundo.

Hopkins said that Mayweather flashing his money in public sends a wrong signal to boxing fans.

“You don't see Steve Jobs -- God rest his soul -- talking with a stack of money on the phone. He never showed his wealth because his wealth was who he was, not what he had,” he said in ESPN.com.

Hopkins, the oldest boxer to win a world title at age 46, said Mayweather should be careful with the image he’s portraying.

“He has the power like Jim Brown had in his era. He has the power like the great Ray Leonard had. He has the power like Ali had, when he said, ‘Ain't no Vietcong ever called me n--.’ Everybody doesn't get this opportunity,” said the boxing legend.

Hopkins, however, still picks Mayweather to win over Filipino superstar Manny Pacquiao.

He maintained that Mayweather has the boxing style that can defeat Pacquiao.

“Well, he (Pacquiao) beat Shane Mosley. Manny Pacquiao can flat-out fight, but he has fought mostly Mexican fighters, and their styles are different from the way we are taught to fight in our culture,” said Hopkins.

MANILA, Philippines — B-Meg took advantage of the opportunity as it clinched the second twice-to-beat incentive in the quarterfinal playoff following an 86-74 win over newcomer Shopinas.com in the PBA Philippine Cup Thursday night at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.

The Llamados were never threatened in the game against the young but sloppy Clickers, dictating the tempo from start to finish as they ended their elimination round campaign in this all-Filipino conference with a 10-4 win-loss record.

The victory, which extended the team’s season-best winning streak to eight games, assured B-Meg of the top two spots in the playoffs that carries twice-to-beat advantage against the No. 7 and 8 qualifiers in the playoffs.

The Tim Cone-mentored squad can actually finish with the No. 1 seed in the playoffs if defending champion Talk ’N Text (10-3) loses to Barangay Ginebra on Sunday.

Whatever the outcome, however, the Tropang Texters are assured of twice-to-beat, claiming it with a nail-biting 80-78 victory over the Petron Blaze Boosters last Tuesday courtesy of Japeth Aguilar’s winning putback with 2.4 seconds left.

“We played a very good first quarter. That’s our target, to get out and try to make a statement,” said Cone as B-Meg took a 28-11 lead after the opening period. “This is the game that we got to have. Now we focus on the playoffs.”

Depending on the Talk ’N Text-Barangay Ginebra encounter, as well as the Barako Bull match versus Ginebra, which is being played at press time, B-Meg’s possible playoffs’ foe is Powerade (No. 8 team in the playoffs), Barako Bull or Ginebra.

The Kings (7-5) can finish from No. 3 to No. 7, while the Energy (6-7) can take No. 6 or 7. The third to sixth finishers after the eliminations will play in the crossovers best-of-three series in the quarterfinals.

“We know where we’re going to play but we still don’t know who. We have days to figure things out, something that we can talk about with the coaching staff. Even in twice to beat, when you face a team that is hot, it’s going to be tough,” said Cone.

“We have to really be on top of our game. This is not an easy conference in terms of coaching and preparation. But I have a very veteran team, they’ve been in so many wars,” added Cone, who took the coaching job with B-Meg at the start of the season after 22 years – and 13 titles – with Alaska.

Joe Devance led B-Meg with 18 points, while Marc Pingris had a double-double 11 points and 12 rebounds. PJ Simon had 10 points. Former two-time Most Valuable Player (MVP) James Yap only scored five points in 23 minutes.

Yap said they need to be more consistent come playoff time, saying: “Iba na laro kapag playoffs, physical, kasi lahat ng players gusto manalo, gusto maka-pasok sa semis. Pero sa tingin ko handa kami, medyo inconsistent lang kami sa defense, yun palagi ang emphasis ni coach Tim.”

B-Meg quickly jumped the gun and grabbed a 19-2 lead with sophomore guard Josh Urbiztondo accounting for eight points.

The Llamados took a 28-11 advantage with Urbiztondo scoring all of his 11 points in the first quarter highlighted by three three-pointers with his team converting 12-of-19 (63.2%) shots from the field while holding Shopinas.com to just 5-of-23 (21.7%).

A jumper by Yancy de Ocampo gave B-Meg a 22-point advantage, 37-15, with 7:59 left in the third quarter.

The halftime ended with B-Meg up, 56-36.

With the setback, Shopinas now holds the all-time worst start in a conference at 0-14. They were previously tied at 0-13 with Country Fair during the 1984 Reinforced Conference, as well as 13 straight losses by Great Taste, which eventually finished the 1982 All-Filipino at 2-16.

Shopinas.com became the fifth team which failed to score a single win in a conference.

Ateneo storms into PCCL finals

MANILA, Philippines — Not even the heavy downpour and the irritating traffic could prevent Ateneo from earning a date with San Sebastian for the 2011 Philippine Collegiate Champions League crown.

Despite half of the team members, including coach Norman Black, arrived just minutes before tip off, the defending champion Blue Eagles went on a torrid shooting in the first half for a 76-63 win over NCAA titlist San Beda at The Arena in San Juan.

Ateneo, also the four-time UAAP champions, bucked a 7-2 deficit at the start by hitting 61-percent in the first half before the trio of Greg Slaughter, Kiefer Ravena and Nico Salva kept the Red Lions at bay with their clutch baskets.

"Luckily we played pretty well today," said Black, who arrived about 25 minutes before the start of the match. "It was not very pretty, particularly at the end of the game but our defense held up."

The Loyola-based squad ended the single-round semifinals tied with San Sebastian for first at 2-1 but the latter holds a twice-to-beat advantage by virtue of its 70-69 win on Tuesday.

San Sebastian, led by the ferocious Calvin Abueva, came back from a 12-point in the last six minutes to stun Ateneo.

Ateneo, which made the PCCL finals for the fifth straight year, seeks to win a rare three-peat and fourth overall when it meets the Stags on Monday.

If the Eagles come out victorious, a knockout match is slated on Thursday.

Black's team is out to repeat its triumphant PCCL victories in 2009 and 2010 where it overcame Game 1 defeats to Far Eastern University and Adamson by winning the last two games. Both finals were contested in a best-of-three series.

"We will see if we can do it again," said Black when asked about doing the similar task. "San Sebastian will be a tough team to beat."

Slaughter had 20 points and eight rebounds while Ravena, who likewise arrived minutes before the match due to the heavy traffic, tallied 18 points, three rebounds and four assists. Salva posted 17 points, eight boards and two dimes.

Jess Villahermosa had 21 points while Rome dela Rosa added 14 for a depleted San Beda team that played sans Garvo Lanete and Jake Pascual during the Final Four.

Floyd isn't Manny's priority – Arum

MANILA, Philippines — Life goes on for Manny Pacquiao even if a fight with Floyd Mayweather Jr. doesn't happen.

Hall of fame promoter Bob Arum, who turned 80 on Thursday, told the Las Vegas-Review Journal that getting a deal done for a Mayweather is the "priority", stressing that since the fight is so big, it "isn't the kind of fight you make in 15 minutes."

For Arum, patience is a virtue.

"It doesn't work that way. It takes times, and my obligation is to get Manny the best deal possible," said the Harvard-educated lawyer who began promoting in 1966 starring Muhammad Ali.

It's not the end of the world for Pacquiao in the event negotiations for a mouth-watering Mayweather superfight go down the drain, insisted Arum.

On the forefront of negotiations for a Mayweather clash is no other than Pacquiao's Canadian adviser Mike Koncz, who remains tight-lipped on the on-going talks. Koncz said talking about sensitive details will jeopardize the negotiations.

Early this week, Pacquiao told a group of Filipino sportswriters during a dinner he hosted that while the Mayweather fight is still not done, efforts are being made to make it a reality.

Ateneo, SSC zap PCCL foes

MANILA, Philippines — A near-brawl that everyone anticipated marred Monday's start of the Philippine Collegiate Champions League semifinals at The Arena in San Juan.

San Sebastian flattened a depleted NCAA champion San Beda, 87-72, in a match that saw Calvin Abueva and Kyle Pascual triggering a bench-clearing incident with 2:11 remaining in the fourth quarter.

Abueva, arguably the most hated player among the Lion faithful, rued an elbow from behind by Pascual during a rebound situation. A heated Abueva tried to retaliate but was restrained by a game official and several players.

Both benches emptied before in-house bouncers, coaches and officials rushed to stop the commotion.

Eight cagers from either sides were ejected, including Abueva and Pascual, and the match resumed without any untoward incident.

The near-brawl overshadowed Ateneo's resounding 100-53 rout of CESAFI champion University of Cebu with 6-foot-11 Greg Slaughter scoring 18 points and 11 rebounds in his first battle with the Webmasters' 6-foot-10 Junmar Fajardo in two years.

The former University of the Visayas star had 14 points in the first half as Ateneo dominated the back-to-back CESAFI champion Webmasters by taking a 54-30 halftime lead.

With Fajardo not feeling well, he was held to just 12 points.

And with Nico Salva taking charge in the third, Ateneo extended its comfortable margin even as UC was left to play on its own without Fajardo, who suffered a knee injury during last week's win over Cebu rival Southwestern University in Ormoc.

"First, I want to apologize for what happened," said a regretful Stags coach Topex Robinson. "I was supposed to take control of my players but it's highly emotional not just for the players and the community."

"I just told them that we are basketball players, not boxers or UFC fighters so I tried to avoid that altercation but I can do so much," he added.

Executive director Joe Lipa said that Abueva, Pascual, San Sebastian's AJ Vitug, Michael Miranda, Krushev Ferrer and Joshua Grille and San Beda's Ryusei Koga and Michole Sorela, can play today as the PCCL has no house rules with regard to ejections.

Pacquiao, Cotto down the road?

MANILA, Philippines — Don’t be surprised if Manny Pacquiao and Miguel Cotto slug it out for the second time somewhere down the road.

Cotto propelled himself into the mix of Pacquiao opponents, at least, late next year or sometime in 2013, by scoring a ninth-round stoppage of Antonio Margarito over the weekend at Madison Square Garden in New York.

Although tops on Cotto’s mind is Floyd Mayweather and even Mexicans Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. and Saul Alvarez, one can’t discount the posibility of seeing the Puerto Rican banger face off with the Filipino puncher in a rematch.

Even the Puerto Rican media has speculated on the possibility of seeing Pacquiao and Cotto collide again.

Pacquiao had dealt Cotto a stinging 12th-round TKO loss in a welterweight match in Nov. 2009.

But since Cotto now fights at super-welterweight (154 lbs), he might lobby for a catchweight of 150 lbs against Pacquiao, who has only fought once beyond welterweight — against Margarito — late last year in Texas.

Since losing to Pacquiao, Cotto has rebounded well and if he continues to rack up a few more wins, he should become a worthy candidate.

Like Cotto, Pacquiao is also angling for a showdown with Mayweather in 2012.

Pacquiao, who turned professional more than 15 years ago, is said he will call it quits at the end of 2013 when he is almost 35 years old.

Texters eye bonus against Boosters

MANILA, Philippines — Defending champion Talk ’N Text shoots for an outright twice-to-beat advantage in the quarterfinal playoff when it collides against rival Petron Blaze in the PBA Philippine Cup Tuesday at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.

The Tropang Texters face the Petron Blaze Boosters, another team hoping to improve their chances for that important twice-to-beat incentive, at 7:30 p.m., right after the 5:15 p.m. game between Powerade and Barako Bull.

TNT leads the field with a 9-3 card, while Petron and B-Meg are just half-game behind with similar 9-4 records. All teams play a total of 14 games.

Talk ’N Text is fresh from a 100-97 win over Alaska last Saturday, which booted the Aces out from the playoff race while giving the Powerade Tigers a free-ride to the next round that completed the eight-team quarterfinal cast.

The Texters’ win snapped their own two-game skid.

While TNT won against Petron (96-86) the first time they met this conference last Oct. 28, coach Chot Reyes expects that things will be a lot tougher this time as both teams are aspiring for that twice-to-beat advantage.

“Biggest game of the conference so far as a W (win) will assure us of top two finish,” said Reyes.

“It will be a big test of our D (defense) which we’ve been working hard to improve on and our new players whose contributions we need off the bench,” he added, referring to the likes of guards Shawn Weinstein and Bam-Bam Gamalinda, who were included to the roster because of injuries to four mainstays, Ali Peek (gunshot in the nape), Ryan Reyes (MCL), Aaron Aban and Jared Dillinger.

While Reyes is hoping for Weinstein and Gamalinda to contribute, he expects the regulars like Jimmy Alapag, Jason Castro, Kelly Williams, Ranidel de Ocampo, Harvey Carey, Japeth Aguilar and Larry Fonacier to play big against Petron.

Petron, which lost to Barangay Ginebra (89-91) last Friday that ended a five-game winning streak, is also dealing with injury woes as forwards Rabeh Al-Hussaini (ACL) and Jay Washington (ankle) are still unavailable.

However, the Boosters of coach Ato Agustin are getting big games, which he expects from Arwind Santos, Alex Cabagnot, Denok Miranda and Joseph Yeo and former two-time MVP Danny Ildefonso in their final game in the elimination opposite TNT.

A victory by Talk ’N Text will automatically give the team outright twice-to-beat, even if it drops its last game versus Ginebra on Sunday as it will finish at 10-4, with only B-Meg possibly tying them.

The Llamados face winless Shopinas.com Clickers on Thursday.
