Reported speech/ Indirect Speech

Indirect Speech (also referred to as 'reported speech') refers to a sentence reporting what someone has said. It is almost always used in spoken English.

If the reporting verb (i.e. said) is in the past, the reported clause will be in a past form. This form is usually one step back into the past from the original.

For example:

He said the test was difficult.
She said she watched TV every day.
Jack said he came to school every day.

If simple present, present perfect or the future is used in the reporting verb (i.e. says) the tense is retained.

For example:

Romeo says the test is difficult.
Juliet has said that she watches TV every day.
Adam will say that he comes to school every day.

If reporting a general truth the present tense will be retained.

For example:The Native speaker said that phrasal verbs are very important.

Changing Pronouns and Time Signifiers

When changing from direct speech to indirect speech, it is often necessary to change the pronouns to match the subject of the sentence.

For example:

She said, "I want to bring my children." BECOMES She said she wanted to bring her children.
Jack said, "My wife went with me to the show." BECOMES Jack said his wife had gone with him to the show.

It is also important to change time words (signifiers) when referring to present, past or future time to match the moment of speaking.

For example:

She said, "I want to bring my children tomorrow." BECOMES She said she wanted to bring her children the next day.
Jack said, "My wife went with me to the show yesterday." BECOMES Jack said his wife had gone with him to the show the day before.

Indirect Questions

When reporting questions, it is especially important to pay attention to sentence order. When reporting yes/ no questions connect the reported question using 'if'. When reporting questions using question words (why, where, when, etc.) use the question word.

For example:

She asked, "Do you want to come with me?" BECOMES She asked me if I wanted to come with her.
Dave asked, "Where did you go last weekend?" BECOMES Dave asked me where I had gone the previous weekend.
He asked, "Why are you studying English?" BECOMES She asked me why I was studying English.

Prepositions: In, On, and At (with specific times and places)

The prepositions in, on, and at can be used to indicate time and place. Notice how they are used in the following situations:

Prepositions with articles and locations

When talking about locations, use at to indicate the general vicinity or area, and in to
indicate inside the building, enclosed area, etc. For example:

at the swimming pool (on site)	in the swimming pool (in the pool itself i.e. in the water)
at the post office/bank (general)	in the post office/bank (inside the building)
at the zoo (visitors, general area)	in the zoo (animals in their cages)
at school	in the classroom

Sample sentences:

I met my wife at the theater. (while watching a movie)

I spilled my drink in the theater (on the floor of the building)

She works at the library on Wednesdays.

She found a rare coin in the library (building).

Dr. Jones works at the hospital every day.

John was in the hospital for a week with a broken leg.

For school, prison, and church, the is used to indicate the building. No article indicates
the general situation. Note the following:

Adjectives

Adjectives are used to describe nouns. They give more details or information about the nouns they are associated with.

A: Tell me about your boyfriend B: Well, he is tall, dark, and handsome. A: Sounds like mine.

Adjectives can be used to answer the questions What kind (of) or Which one?

Adjectives come before the nouns they modify (not after).

Adjectives can also be used with linking verbs to describe the subject of a sentence.
When used in this manner, the adjective(s) come after the linking verb.

My mother is tall and slender.

Adjectives are the same for all nouns. They do not change for plurals.

Composite Stock Price Index (CSPI) down 22 points due to rising investor concerns over European debt crisis following the Standard and Poor's downgraded one notch to A/A-1 Italy and maintains a negative outlook.

While the rupiah against the U.S. dollar (U.S.) opened lower at the position of Rp 8950 per U.S. dollar compared to yesterday's closing at Rp 8850 per U.S. dollar.

In preopening trading, stock index fell 21.227 points (0.56%) to a level of 3733.825. While LQ 45 Index fell 5.268 points (0.80%) to a level of 649.068.

Open trade on Tuesday (09/20/2011), JCI ambles 22.996 points (0.62%) to a level of 3732.056. LQ 45 Index fell 5.707 points (0.87%) to a level of 648.629.

Until around 9:35 JATS time, stock index fell 41.507 points (1.11%) to a level of 3713.545. While LQ 45 Index fell 9.618 points (1.47%) to a level of 644.718.

Yesterday, the Jakarta Composite Index slumped by 80 points due to selling pressure in the leading shares and tier two. Commerce runs sluggish because of the growing investor concerns related to the handling of the crisis in Europe.

Wall Street stock market rose for five consecutive days after European leaders worked together to reduce the impact of the local debt crisis. The S & P 500 scored highest gain this week.

Steps taken by European leaders showed that they are serious to end the debt crisis that has undermined the financial markets in recent weeks. One way is to provide easier access to loan U.S. dollars (U.S.).

U.S. Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner urged European finance ministers to work together and improve the level of its bailout to tackle the crisis, but there is no agreement on what steps will be taken.

Still, it's positive news helped the S & P 500 climbed 5.4% in a week, its best gain since early July. The rise in the index in the last five days is also the best since June.

In percentages, the Nasdaq Composite Index recorded the highest rise since July 2009, aided by technology stocks. Index technology sector in the S & P, GSPT grew 1%, while the broader S & P consumer sector, namely GSPD also rose 1%.

"The market situation will be more convincing as the absence of extraordinary destruction in Europe," said Chief Investment Trunow Natalie Calvert Investment Management in Bethesda, Maryland, as quoted by Reuter, Saturday (09/17/2011).

If so, Ontario's colleges can help. The 28 publicly-funded colleges of Ontario help educate more than 25,000 apprentices across the province each year.

An apprenticeship is a form of job training that enables you to learn by doing. As an apprentice you work under the supervision of a person skilled in the job you wish to learn. That individual teaches you how to do the work. As part of all apprenticeships, there is an in-school educational component. This educational component is provided at one of the colleges in Ontario.

There are many paths to becoming an apprentice. The traditional approach to becoming an apprentice is to find an employer willing to teach you the trade and then contact the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities and officially register as an apprentice. The educational component of your apprenticeship may be taken at one of the publicly-funded colleges in Ontario. For details regarding the traditional apprenticeship system, see the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities website.

If you are not currently registered as an apprentice, the colleges of Ontario can help you get started. Check out the pre-apprenticeship programs offered at a number of colleges. It is important to research which particular programs are being offered at any individual college before applying as program offerings vary from year to year.
