Explore Distance Learning Options at Harvard

Distance learning programs have changed the way many of us look at college. Something that once may have been impossible is now very much in reach. Have you always desired a degree from an Ivy League School? Fulfill a lifelong dream by earning a degree from the Harvard Extension School at a distance. The great news is that it is not as expensive or difficult to get in as one would think.

Since the Harvard Extension School is part of Harvard University, it is accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges and is located in Cambridge, MA. The school has over 600 classes available with over 100 of those classes available online. To take a course online or through the weekend and evening program, you just need to register and pay the tuition. There is also a $50 registration fee, but no required tests or essays to write.

In addition to online classes, the Harvard Extension School also offers full distance learning programs. There are 6 degree programs that can be earned online. These degree programs include a B.A. in Liberal Arts and Master’s degrees in Liberal Arts, Biotechnology, Environmental Management, Information Technology and Management. All of these degree programs require the student to take at least one class on campus and some require at 5 classes to be taken on campus. If you live in the New England area this may work out well for you. The remaining classes can be taken online.

Admission into the degree programs are a little more extensive than just registering, but not much more. Applicants only need a 2.5 GPA to apply to the B.A. program and must pass the required expository writing classes. Graduate admissions require a B.A. from a regionally accredited school. Both the undergrad and graduate programs require applicants to pass the on-campus classes in order to be admitted to the programs.

There are two programs at Harvard that can be completed entirely online. They are the certificate programs in Applied Sciences and Environmental Management. Admission into these programs requires a B.A. from a regionally accredited school and completion of the required core courses.

The online classes contain the same lectures the on-campus classes do. Students simply login to the password protected website and view the lectures that are made available online a few days after the live lecture. Assignments are due by a certain date and are submitted electronically to the professor. Most communication with other students and professors is done through e-mail.

The Harvard Extension School was designed to be affordable; therefore the costs are not astronomical. Non-credit courses cost around $450 for the entire course. Undergraduate credit courses cost from $800 to $950. Graduate credit courses cost from $1725 to $1975. These prices do not include the costs of books. Financial aid is available to those who qualify. Federal financial aid is only available to those who are enrolled in one of the degree programs. Private student loans are available to those who qualify.

The distance education you would receive as a student at the Harvard Extension School is equal to the on-campus education. There is no distinction on the diploma detailing how the degree was earned. It will simply say Harvard. An online degree from Harvard would be a boost to both your confidence and to your resume.

Comparing Distance Learning MBA Programs

Deciding on a distance learning Masters in Business Administration (MBA) program can be difficult. There are a lot of different options out there. Some MBA programs are available through online learning only. Others fall under the category of distance learning and may require visits to the campus. Before choosing an MBA program, decide what you want, and more importantly, what you need from a program.
No matter your path in life, only you know what you need from an online MBA program. If you work full time and have a family, you may need to consider a part time MBA program. If you want a full time program but already have a lot on your plate, then the idea of taking 4 classes during one 16 week semester may sound like a lot. Consider looking at programs that break up their semesters. Some programs offer 8 week sessions within their 16 week semesters. To be full time you will need to take 2 classes in an 8 week session. This still equals 4 classes per 16 week semester, but juggling 2 subjects at once is much easier than juggling 4.
Some MBA programs require students to complete a residency at the campus. This may be fine for some students; but many non-traditional students may find it difficult to get away. Excelsior College, for example, has no on-campus requirement for their MBA, and also offers the added flexibility of 8 and 15 week online courses, and students may be able to transfer up to 24 previously earned graduate credits. Find out if the programs you are considering require on-campus visits or residencies.
Cost is another factor. Not everyone has money set aside to pay for college. While there are many online learning programs that are cheaper than traditional programs, they can still be quite expensive. Most regionally accredited schools offer federal financial aid. You can receive loans and/or grants to finance your education. Loans do not have to be paid until 6 months after graduation, giving you time to get a good job to pay them back. If federal financial aid is not available, then you may want to see what other financial help the program offers.
Choosing an MBA program involves more than researching the format and costs of the program. Accreditation is something else to consider. Many regionally accredited universities also earn accreditation for their business schools.
The gold standard for a business school is accreditation by The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACBS). If you want to teach business one day, graduating from an AACBS accredited program is a must. AACBS accreditation shows that a program has consistently met high standards of education.
There are 2 other types of business accreditation, the Association of Collegiate Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP) and the International Assembly for Collegiate Business Education (IACBE). Accreditations by these organizations mean that the school has gone above and beyond meeting basic regional accreditation standards. Programs with accreditation by ACBSP and IACBE will be sufficient for many MBA degree seekers.
There is a lot to look at when comparing online MBA programs. It will help if you make a list of all the things you require of a program. There are a lot of good programs out there. Check your lists and discard the ones that do not meet your requirements. A program may be considered “top-notch” but if it won’t work for you, then it does not matter how good the program is.

Deciding to earn a degree from an online school is easy. The hard part is choosing the right online school. There are so many options when it comes to online learning. For example, there are big name brick and mortar schools that offer online learning programs.
There are also virtual universities that have an online presence only. To further complicate matters, there are expensive online programs and cheaper alternatives. With all the choices, it’s hard to know which online schools are bad and which are good.
At this point I am sure you are wondering: are there bad online schools for getting a degree? Let’s just say that there are a few you should stay away from.

Considering Unaccredited Online Schools?

When looking at an online school, it is important to look at the school’s accreditation first. A school that has been accredited means that it has met certain academic criteria. The school has gone through a review process of its facility, its teachers and its curriculum and has passed the tests set forth by accrediting organizations.
There are two types of accreditation: regional and national. Regional accreditation is considered the “gold standard” of accreditation. If you have a degree from a regionally accredited school, the degree will be accepted and acknowledged by other universities. National accreditation is still a great achievement by a school; however, you should know that not all employers or universities accept such a degree.
Despite most students’ quests for an accredited school, there are some schools which are not accredited. Websites of such schools seek to mollify would-be students by expounding in detail about the voluntary nature of an accreditation and claims that an accreditation does not necessarily mean you will get a quality education.
This is actually quite true. You could attend a regionally accredited school only to continuously get bad teachers and end up learning very little. Of course, this can happen in any school, whether it is an online school or a traditional school. It is even possible to get a great education from an unaccredited school.
On the flipside, knowing that accreditation means a school has passed a rigorous approval process tells you that the school cares about proving its quality to others. Most employers will not accept a degree from an unaccredited school, and accredited schools will not accept such a degree for transfer credit.
Why would you want to be put in such a precarious position? Online school is expensive. Why pay for something you may not be able to use? It is much better and safer to stick with accredited schools only.

Life Experience Degrees

Have you ever received an email advertising a “Life Experience Degree?” The email explains how your work and life experience more than make up for the lack of a college degree. For a nominal fee the “online school” will take your work and life experience and give you a degree based on it. Your money buys you a diploma to hang on your wall, and some fake transcripts detailing the classes you never took.
There are a few things wrong here. First, it is dishonest, especially if you are planning to use the degree to get a new job. Second, using one of these degrees to get a job is actually illegal in some states. Third, these degrees undermine the hard work that students put into receiving their degrees.
These so called schools are actually just individuals who have set up shop on the Internet to take your money and print out a diploma for you. Most of these people have already been caught by police once. They just change the name of their “online school” and build a new website. Be on the lookout for these types of places. Their websites look very real and professional. Remember that a real school with have contact information. Many of these sites list only an address for contact information.

How to Pick the Right Online Schools

Formulate an idea of what field you want to go into. Find an online school that offers a wide variety of choices if you think you might change your mind. Next, research the school’s accreditation. Regional accreditation should be your first choice, but remember that national accreditation can work for you, too. Research the field you want to go into and make sure a nationally accredited program would work for you.

Online Class Format

The online masters degrees are conducted using a combination of both 8 week and 16 week long semesters. All classes are taught by professors who have over 11 years of experience in their field. Classes use both synchronous and asynchronous methods. Synchronous means that classes are held online at a specific time. These portions are usually held on evenings and weekends. Asynchronous means students are able to access course material on their own time and are not on a set schedule.

Tuition and Financial Aid

What is O-Auth ?

OAuth is an open protocol, initiated by Blaine Cook and Chris Messina, to allow secure API authorization in a standard method for desktop, mobile and web applications.

For consumer developers, OAuth is a method to publish and interact with protected data. For service provider developers, OAuth gives users access to their data while protecting their account credentials. In other words, OAuth allows a user to grant access to their information on one site (the Service Provider), to another site (called Consumer), without sharing all of their identity.

Microsoft Student Lounge Service Agreement

Last updated: June 2009

This is a contract between you and the Microsoft company listed in section 20 of this contract. This contract refers to Microsoft as “we,” “us” or “our.” This contract applies to any Microsoft Student Lounge Web sites (and their successor sites), services (including pre-release services) and software, including all updates, support, and content. This contract refers to all of these as the “service.” This contract also covers your use of any additional Microsoft services for which you sign up while this contract is in force, unless other terms accompany those services. If so, those terms apply. You represent that you are at least 18 years of age or have attained the age of majority where you live, and that all information you supply is true and correct. Each service may have other posted notices or codes of conduct. All such notices and codes of conduct are incorporated by reference into this contract.

You may use the service only if you agree to these terms. If you do not agree, do not use the service. This contract limits our liability and disclaims warranties for the service to the maximum extent permitted by law. Please read these sections of the contract carefully.

1. When You May Use the Service

If you create an account to use the service, you may start using the service as soon as you have finished the sign–up process. As indicated during the setup process, some parts of the service may not be available right away while we configure them for your use. If you do not create an account to use the service, you can use the available service right away.

2. Personal and Non-Commercial Use of the Service

The services are provided to you for your own personal use, they may not be used for any commercial purposes. Examples of commercial purposes include running business operations, licensing, leasing, or selling the services, or any other activity which purpose is to procure a commercial gain to you or others.

3. How You May Use the Service

In using the service, you must

· comply with all laws,

· comply with any codes of conduct or other notices we provide, including but not limited to the Windows Live Code of Conduct, and the Safety Tips listed at the bottom of this Terms of Use,

· comply with the Microsoft Anti-Spam Policy,

· keep your password secret, and

· promptly notify us if you learn of a security breach related to the service.

4. How You May Not Use the Service

In using the service, you may not

· use the service in any way that harms Microsoft or its affiliates, resellers, distributors and/or vendors (collectively, the “Microsoft parties”), or any customer of a Microsoft party,

· engage in, facilitate, or further unlawful conduct,

· damage, disable, overburden or impair the service (or the networks connected to the service) or interfere with anyone’s use and enjoyment of the service,

· resell or redistribute the service, or any part of the service, unless you have a contract with Microsoft that permits you to do so,

· use any portion of the service as a destination linked from any unsolicited bulk messages or unsolicited commercial messages (“spam”),

· use any unauthorized third-party software or service to access the Microsoft instant messaging network (currently known as the .NET Messenger service),

· use any automated process or service to access and/or use the service (such as a BOT, a spider, periodic caching of information stored by Microsoft or “meta-searching”), or

· use any unauthorized means to modify or reroute, or attempt to modify or reroute, the service.

5. Your Service Account

You may establish a service account and password for the service. The service may enable you to have other people create member accounts and passwords associated with your account. We call these “associated accounts.” You are responsible for all activity under your account, associated accounts and passwords.

6. Associated Account Users

If you are the user of an associated account, then the holder of the service account has full control over your associated account. This control includes the right to end the service, close or alter your associated account at any time, and in some cases, to request and receive computer and service use information related to your associated account. Any data related to your associated account is collected and delivered to the account holder and Microsoft.

7. How We May Change This Contract

Microsoft may change this contract at any time without notice. If you do not stop using the service, your continued use of the service will be under the changed contract.

8. Changes to the Service; Cancellation or Termination

By Microsoft. We may change the service at any time and for any reason without notice. We may cancel or suspend your service or a portion of your service at any time and for any reason without notice, including, but not limited to, if you violate the terms of this contract. If we do, your right to use the service will stop right away.

Data. Upon termination or cancellation of the service by you or us for any reason, Microsoft may delete your data permanently from our servers. You are responsible for taking the necessary steps to back up your data.

Waiver of rights and obligations. To the extent necessary to implement the termination of this contract, each party waives any right and obligation under any applicable law or regulation to request or obtain intervention of the courts to terminate this contract.

9. Limits on Service

Microsoft may establish limits on the service. For example, we may limit the number of days the service will retain e-mail messages, message board postings and other content that Microsoft, you or other users may post or provide, the number and size of e-mail messages that you may send or receive through the service, the maximum storage space on Microsoft’s servers available to you, the amount of bandwidth available for traffic to a Web site that we host for you, the number of users on your account or any associated accounts, how long we retain an inactive service account, which we define as one where you do not sign in to the service for an extended period of time, and the number of transactions you can conduct through the service.

If you exceed the published service limits, Microsoft reserves the right to cancel your service.

10. Microsoft Does Not Have Editorial Control

Content. Microsoft, you, your associated account users and third parties may be able to post or store materials, including data, documents, information, advertisements, communications, messages, videos and links to third party Web sites (“content”) on the service. The service includes publicly accessible areas, such as a public Web site that Microsoft hosts for you, a community bulletin board service, shared calendar or other public area that allows you to communicate with others (“public areas of the service”). It also includes areas of the service to which you can control access by others, such as shared work sites on Microsoft servers (“private areas of the service”).

Intellectual property rights. Microsoft does not sanction or approve the unauthorized use of content protected by copyright and other intellectual property rights. You understand that sharing content that violates others’ copyrights and intellectual property rights violates this contract. You represent and warrant that the use and publication of the content by you and others does not violate the intellectual property rights of any third party. You understand that Microsoft may remove content at any time without notice when the content violates this contract or an applicable code of conduct, or when we have a good faith reason to believe it is necessary to do so.

Posting Content. You understand that Microsoft does not control or endorse the content that you and others post or provide on the service. Microsoft doesn’t claim ownership of content that you and others post or provide. By posting or providing content you grant to Microsoft and the public (for content posted on public areas of the service), or those members of the public to which you have granted access (for content posted on private areas of the service), free, unlimited worldwide and perpetual permission to use, modify, copy, distribute and display the content in connection with the service, and publish your name with the content. You also give the public, or those members of the public to which you have granted access, permission to grant these rights to others. You represent and warrant that you have all the rights necessary for you to grant the rights in this section and that the use and publication of the content does not breach any law. Microsoft will not pay you for content you post on public areas of the service. This section only applies to legally permissible content and only to the extent that use and publishing of the legally permissible content does not breach the law.

Private areas of the service. You understand that certain technical processing of content posted on private areas of the service may be required to store and retrieve the content, conform to connecting networks’ technical requirements, or conform to the limitations of the service.

Links to third-party Web sites. The service may contain links to third-party Web sites. These third-party Web sites are not under Microsoft’s control. If Microsoft has included these links in the service, we provide them to you as a convenience only. The inclusion of these links is not an endorsement by Microsoft of any third-party Web site, service or product. Microsoft reserves the right to disable links to any third-party Web site that you or other customers post on the service.

11. Trademark Usage in Content.

If your video includes screenshots of Microsoft software, you must comply with Microsoft’s screenshot guidelines, available at http://www.microsoft.com/about/legal/permissions/default.mspx#E3C.

You acknowledge that Microsoft is the sole owner of any and all trademarks that appear in the screenshots, such as the words “Microsoft Office”, the Microsoft Office Logo, and Microsoft Office launch icons, and you agree that all goodwill in these trademarks inures to the benefit of Microsoft.

You acknowledge that your use of Microsoft’s trademarks is limited to use within screenshots you are including in your instructional video, and that Microsoft has not granted you rights to use Microsoft’s trademarks for any other purpose.

12. Privacy

Access and Disclosure. In order to operate and provide the services, we collect certain information about you. We use and protect that information as described in the Microsoft Online Privacy Statement. In particular, we may access or disclose information about you, including the content of your communications, in order to:

· comply with the law or respond to lawful requests or legal process,

· protect the rights or property of Microsoft or our customers, including the enforcement of our agreements or policies governing your use of the services; or

· act when we believe, in good faith, that such access or disclosure is necessary to protect the personal safety of Microsoft employees, customers or the public.

You consent to the access and disclosures outlined in this section.

Transfer of personal information. Personal information collected through the service may be stored and processed in the United States or any other country in which Microsoft or its affiliates, subsidiaries, or agents maintain facilities. By using the service, you consent to any such transfer of information outside of your country. Microsoft abides by the safe harbor framework as set forth by the U.S. Department of Commerce regarding the collection, use, and retention of data from the European Union. You may read more about transfers of this data in the Privacy Statement.

The service is a private computer network that Microsoft operates for the benefit of itself and its customers. Microsoft retains the right to block or otherwise prevent delivery of any type of email or other communication to or from the service as part of our efforts to protect the service, protect our customers or stop you from breaching this contract. The technology or other means we use may hinder or break your use of the service.

Performance and usage data. In order to provide you the service, we may collect certain information about service performance, your computer and your service use. We may automatically upload this information from your computer. This data will not personally identify you.

Filtering technology. We may use technology or other means to protect the service, protect our customers, or stop you from breaching this contract. Examples include filtering to stop spam and viruses or increase security. These means may hinder your use of the service.

Your privacy practices. In using the service, you may be able to collect personal information about third parties through your dealings with such third parties. If you do, you agree to (a) post a privacy policy on your Web site that, at a minimum, discloses any and all uses of personal information that you collect from such third parties, (b) provide a hypertext link to your privacy policy on the home page of your Web site and on all pages where you collect personal information from third parties, including on check out pages, and (c) use personal information only as expressly permitted by your privacy policy.

13. Software

Use. If you receive software from us as part of the service, your use of that software is under the terms of the license that is presented to you for acceptance for that software. If there is no license presented to you, then we (or, based on where you live, one of our affiliates) grant you the right to use the software only for the use of the service authorized under this contract and only on that number of computers stated in your service offer. We (or, based on where you live, one of our affiliates) reserve all other rights to the software. Unless we notify you otherwise, your right to use the software ends when your right to use the service terminates or expires, and you must promptly uninstall the software. We may disable the software after the date the service ends.

Update. We may automatically check your version of the software. We may automatically download upgrades to the software to your computer to update, enhance and further develop the service.

Scope of License. Copyright and other intellectual property laws and treaties protect the software. The software is licensed, not sold. This contract only gives you some rights to use the software. Microsoft reserves all other rights. You will not disassemble, decompile, or reverse engineer any software included in the service, except and only to the extent that the law expressly permits this activity.

Export Laws. The software is subject to United States export laws and regulations. You must comply with all domestic and international export laws and regulations that apply to the software. These laws include restrictions on destinations, end users and end use. For additional information, see www.microsoft.com/exporting.14. Materials that Microsoft Licenses to You

Media Elements and Templates. You may have access to media images, clip art, animations, sounds, music, shapes, video clips, templates and other forms of downloadable content (“media elements”) associated with the service. If so, you may use the media elements only for personal and non-commercial purposes.

Documents. You may have access to information on the service such as white papers, knowledge-base articles, datasheets and FAQs ("documents"). You may use the documents only for informational purposes. You may not copy, distribute, modify or make derivative works of the documents. Educational institutions that are officially accredited under local law may download and copy the documents for distribution only in the classroom.

Limitations. The license grant to use media elements, templates and documents provided with the service does not include a license to the design or layout of the service or any Microsoft owned, operated, licensed or controlled Web site. You should not copy or retransmit any logo, graphic, sound or image from the service, unless Microsoft expressly permits it. Microsoft and its suppliers do not warrant or guarantee that the media elements, templates and documents are accurate and suitable for your purposes. Their inclusion with the service is not an endorsement of them by Microsoft. Nothing available from the service is intended to be professional advice, including but not limited to, investment, tax or legal advice.

14. Windows Live™ ID

We may provide you with Windows Live ID credentials to use with the service. Windows Live ID is a multi-purpose authentication Web service that makes it easy for you to sign in to Web sites. You may not use any software or hardware that reduces the number of users directly accessing or using Windows Live ID (sometimes called "multiplexing" or "pooling" software or hardware). This contract applies to you whenever you access or use Windows Live ID credentials. When you use Windows Live ID to gain access to any site or service, the terms and conditions for that site or service may also apply to you. Please refer to the terms of use for each site or service that you visit.

15. Your Dealings with Others

If you obtain anything from a third party (including third party offered services) through the service, you understand that your relationship with respect to those things is with the third party directly and not with Microsoft. In the event you assert a claim that relates to or implicates your relationship with a third party, you shall only assert such claim against the third party, and you will not assert any such claim against Microsoft, even if Microsoft assisted in billing for the third party offering. You are solely responsible for your dealings with any third party, including

· delivery of and payment for goods and services,

· processing and verifying orders, payments and other transactions,

· customer support related to orders or transactions (e.g., lost orders, billing disputes, payments, etc.),

· determining, collecting and remitting to the appropriate authority all taxes (if any) arising from or related to such orders or transactions, and

· the purchase and use by you and your associated accounts of any third party products and services.

· You represent and warrant that

· the products and services you advertise, sell and distribute are legal for sale and distribution and do not violate this contract,

· you have all licenses necessary to sell, distribute and advertise the goods and services you offer,

· all sales and advertisements will comply with applicable law, and

· you will comply with all applicable laws and regulations (including privacy laws and regulations that relate to your collection of information from third parties).

16. Feedback

If you give us feedback about the service or other Microsoft sites (and their successor sites), services (including pre-release services) and software, including all updates, support, and content, you give to Microsoft, without charge, the right to use, share and commercialize your feedback in any way and for any purpose. You also give to third parties, without charge, any patent rights needed for their products, technologies and services to use or interface with any specific parts of a Microsoft site, software or service that includes the feedback. You will not give feedback that is subject to a license that requires Microsoft to license its software or documentation to third parties because we include your feedback in them. These rights survive this contract.

17. Our Notices to You; Your Notices to Us

This contract is in electronic form. We have the right to send you information about the services in electronic form. There may be information about the services that the law requires us to send to you. We may send this information to you in electronic form.

We may provide required information to you by e-mail at the e-mail address you specified when you signed up for the service, or in home when we first send you an e-mail notice alerting you to the notice in home.

Notices will be deemed given and received on the transmission date of the e-mail. As long as you can access and use the service, you have the necessary software and hardware to receive these notices. If you do not consent to receive notices electronically, you must cancel the service.

18. No Warranty

Microsoft makes no guarantee about the reliability, accuracy or timeliness of the service or the results obtained from the service. You understand that the security mechanisms in the service have inherent limitations and that you are responsible for determining that the service meets your needs.

We provide the service “as-is,” “with all faults” and “as available.” You bear the risk of using it. To the maximum extent permitted by law, the Microsoft parties give no express warranties, guarantees or conditions. You may have additional rights under your local laws that this contract cannot change. To the extent permitted by law, we exclude any implied warranties or conditions including those of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, workmanlike effort, non-infringement and satisfactory quality.

19. Liability Limitation

Microsoft will not be liable to you for any damages related to the services, including direct, consequential, lost profits, special, indirect or incidental damages, to the maximum extent the law permits.

This limitation applies to anything related to:

· the service,

· content (including code) on third party Internet sites, third party programs or third party conduct,

· viruses or other disabling features that affect your access to or use of the service,

· incompatibility between the service and other services, software and hardware,

· delays or failures you may have in initiating, conducting or completing any transmissions or transactions in connection with the service in an accurate or timely manner, and

· claims for breach of contract, breach of warranty, guarantee or condition, strict liability, negligence, or other tort.

It also applies even if this remedy does not fully compensate you for any losses, or fails of its essential purpose, or Microsoft knew or should have known about the possibility of the damages.

Some states do not allow the exclusion or limitation of incidental or consequential damages, so the above limitations or exclusions may not apply to you. They also may not apply to you because your province or country may not allow the exclusion or limitation of incidental, consequential or other damages.

20. Microsoft Company, Applicable Law and Place for Resolving Disputes

This contract is between you and the Microsoft company for your country or region. In the table below, select the country or region where you live (if you are signing up for the service as an individual person) or where your business is located (if you are signing up for the service for your business). Next to it you will find the Microsoft company that is contracting with you and the choice of law and the location for resolving disputes with the Microsoft company.

21. Contract Interpretation

All parts of this contract apply to the maximum extent permitted by law. A court may hold that we cannot enforce a part of this contract as written. This contract, together with any codes of conduct and other notices we provide, is the entire contract between Microsoft and you regarding the service. It supersedes any other contract or statements related to the service. If you have confidentiality obligations related to the service, those obligations remain in force (for example, you may have been a tester for a pre-release version of a service). The section titles in the contract do not limit the other terms of this contract.

22. Assignment

Microsoft may assign this contract, in whole or part, at any time without notice to you. You may not assign this contract, or any part of it, to any other party. Any attempt to do so is void. Instead, you may cancel your service. The other party may then establish a service account and enter into a contract with us.

23. Force Majeure

Microsoft will not be liable for any loss or damage or be deemed to be in breach of this contract due to any event or circumstance beyond its reasonable control, including, war, invasion, electrical shortages, terrorist attacks, earthquakes or acts of God.

Keep your identity to yourself
When you upload information, be it a video, blog post, or picture, to the Microsoft Student Lounge, remember that anyone using the Internet can see it.

· Think about what the information shows about you: does it attract the wrong kind of attention or help someone find you? Listen to what is being said as well as think about what can be seen.

· Remember, too, that once you post information publicly, it can stay around forever and may pop up when you least expect (or want) it.

Regarding videos in particular, consider the following questions:

· What’s in the background? Does the video show your house number, a street sign, a license plate, a local mall, your school, or other landmark?

· Listen to the video as words can give away your identity and location, too. In conversation do you use people’s full names or other identifying details such as phone numbers or street addresses?

· What’s on people’s shirts? The name of your school, sports team, or club? Their name—or yours?

· Who’s in the picture? If it shows friends or family members, you may be putting them at risk, too. (You should ask for—and get—permission from everyone in the video before you upload it.)

· Does the video show how you feel about yourself? Expressions of vulnerable feelings—what you say, your facial expressions, your body language—can be of particular interest to predators.

A good rule of thumb: if you wouldn’t give the information in your video to a stranger on a dark, empty street, don’t post it on the Microsoft Student Lounge.

Watch out for comments

Comments. No one has the right to threaten or upset you. Ever. If anyone (even someone you know) leaves a creepy, hateful, or mean comment, asks lots of personal questions, or tries to meet you, simply delete the comment.

If the problem persists and you are a minor, tell an adult you trust right away. Never gamble with your safety.

IEEEXtreme 2009 planning is underway. Mark your calendars for 24 October 2009.

IEEEXtreme is an IEEE MGA Student Activities Committee program, creating a worldwide 24 hour programming contest for IEEE Student Branches.

IEEEXtreme is a global challenge in which teams of student members, supported by an IEEE Student Branch, advised and proctored by an IEEE Member, compete in a 24-hour time span against each other to solve a set of programming problems.

Provide Student Branches with a new and interesting activity
Increase the number of activities with a focus on the computer, programming and information technology fields with fans in IEEE

General Organization

The challenge starts at 00:01GMT on Friday, 24 October 2009, and finishes at 00:01 GMT on Sunday.

Teams will include up to 3 IEEE student members (Student members (StM) or Graduate Student members (GSM). Must be IEEE members to participate on the team
Students Branches can form multiple teams
Student Branches will host the event for their local team, with easy access to university facilities, branch promotion and awareness building on campus
Each of the places where the competition is hosted (ranging from Student Branch offices to college labs) is called a Venue
Each Venue should be equipped with at least one computer and some kind of connection to the Internet

What is a Proctor?

Each of these Venues should have a Proctor, who should be an IEEE Member of higher membership grade (not an undergraduate student member)
Student Branch Counselors, Department Chairs or GOLD members will make great Proctors; you may want to have two, so one can take a break, as it is a 24 hour challenge
Proctor tasks include:
- Receive problems and provide them to students
- Monitor the general flow of the activity
- Inform students when the competition begins, at the middle of it, when there are 6 hours left and when there is 1 hour left
- Collect the solutions to each of the problems and keep a record of the timing
Proctor should NOT:
- Let himself or anybody external to the team members help the students in resolving the problems in any way
- The problems will be proposed and judged by the Technical Committee of judges, a panel of experts from both Academia and Industry
- Preferably IEEE members
- An Xtreme organizing committee formed by IEEE volunteers will take care of the management part of the contest, such as registering and problem submission)

Problem Submission

Teams should submit their problem solutions electronically using a contest management page, which will be provided on the instructions page later.
Sample problems from previous challenges are available - refer to other information below. The 2009 contest problems will be available the day of the contest.
Each submission gets a time stamp (extra points awarded for early submission)
Languages supported are: C/C++ (using gcc), Java (using Sun’s JDK) and C# (using Mono) and the list will be expanded soon

Award recipients

Members of the winning teams will receive IEEE certificates and prizes to recognize their efforts.
All participants will receive a certificate of participation and a big "thank you" for helping us make the IEEE more fun.

IEEE Potentials is dedicated to serving the needs of undergraduate and graduate students as well as entry-level engineers. Article subjects are explored through timely manuscripts on both technical and career related issues.

If you’re a technology professional who has cutting-edge technical ideas, formulated concepts about what will work, or opinions about the forces that influence the problem-solving process, IEEE Potentials would like to hear from you.

IEEE Potentials is interested in manuscripts that deal with theory, practical applications, or new research. They can be tutorial in nature. Submissions may consist of either full articles or shorter, opinion-oriented essays. When submitting an article, please remember:

All manuscripts should be written at the level of the student audience.
Articles without equations are preferred; however, a minimum of equations is acceptable.
List no more than 12 references at the end of your manuscript. No embedded reference numbers should be included in the text. If you need to attribute the source of key points or quotes, state names in the text and give the full reference at the end.
Limit figures to 10 or less.
Articles should be approximately 2,000-4,000 words in length; essays should be 900-1,000 words.
Include a brief biography of four to six lines for each author.

WISE seeks applications from outstanding engineering students who display evidence of leadership skills and have a keen interest in public policy. Minority students are encouraged to apply.

Summer 2010 WISE Program
7 June - 6 August

To qualify for consideration, applicants must be juniors, seniors, or entering their final year of undergraduate studies in engineering (or computer science). WISE will also accept applications from engineering grads who are beginning Masters level study in a technology policy-related degree. Interns must be citizens or legal permanent residents of the United States of America.

Applicants are required to fill out an application form, write two brief (one page) essays in response to questions, arrange for two faculty references, and forward an official transcript.

WISE applicants should apply directly to their desired sponsor using the contact information provided. ANS, ASCE, ASME, IEEE and SAE sponsors only individuals who are members of their societies at the time of application.

To apply for a WISE Internship, select a sponsoring society(s), download a WISE program application and follow the instructions provided. The application period for 2010 internships opens 1 September 2009.

About WISE and the Application Process

Q. What are the dates for the 2009 program?

8 June - 7 August 2009.

Q. My college quarter/semester will not be finished by the WISE start date. Can I start the WISE program late?

Past Interns who have had this situation have been able to work out an arrangement with their professors to leave school early. Some have been excused from exams, others have been allowed to take them early or as "take home" exams while participating in WISE . Occasionally a society sponsor and the professor in charge of WISE will allow an Intern to begin the program a day or two late, but it is better if you can begin on the first day.

Q. How many interns is WISE planning to sponsor in 2009?

10-12, depending on the number of sponsoring societies.

Q. Do I apply to WISE or to the sponsoring society?

Apply directly to a sponsoring society. Contact information is provided on the application form. If you are a member of more than one sponsoring society, you will need to apply to each separately.

Q. What is the deadline date for submitting applications?

Application materials must be post-marked on or before 31 December 2008 to be considered for the Summer 2009 program.

Q. Is there a salary?

There is a stipend of $2,100, paid in 3 installments at the beginning, middle and/or end of the program. In addition, WISE covers the $2,700 cost for housing at George Washington University, as well as providing fare cards for use of the Washington Metro system.

Q. Do I have to belong to one of the sponsoring societies?

Yes. Consider joining to make yourself eligible for WISE.

Q. Are graduate students eligible to apply?

The program is open to recent engineering (or computer science) graduates beginning study in a technology policy-related Master’s program or law school.

Q. Are Freshmen or Sophomore students eligible to apply?

No. Students should have completed at least two years of undergraduate study. The program sponsors believe that the first two years of coursework are required to give you the grounding needed to relate your engineering training to public policy.

Q. Are Computer Science majors eligible to apply?

IEEE will sponsor individuals in a Computer Science degree program if they are also IEEE student members.

Q. When will I hear if I have been accepted?

The sponsoring societies begin reviewing applications in mid-January and then compare sponsorship lists (in case of overlapping choices and to aid those societies without student members). Once the choices are made, students are contacted with sponsorship offers, usually in mid-February. Once all slots have been filled, a notice is placed on the WISE webpage and all applicants will be send responses advising them of the status of their application.

Q. What happens if I accept a WISE Internship sponsorship offer and another opportunity comes along later.

It is very difficult to fill vacancies that occur within a month or two of the start of the summer program, and certain costs (e.g. the cost of the reserved dorm room) have to be absorbed by the program sponsors even if you elect not to participate. If you think you are likely to accept another Internship or anticipate some other contingency that would prevent you fulfilling your WISE internship, you are encouraged not to apply and/or accept a sponsorship offer. If by some circumstance you accept a WISE Internship, but are forced to withdraw from the program, you are strongly encouraged to give notice as soon as possible of your withdrawal so that an attempt can be made to fill the vacancy.

In addition to jointly funding the internship with support from the American Association of Engineering Societies, the sponsoring societies are expected to fulfill various roles in support of the program. They work with their WISE Interns to select a research topic for the summer program. Society staff and/or volunteers serve as mentors to their WISE Interns. Sponsors also provide access to computer facilities and information resources available in their Washington offices.

If your society is not on this list of sponsoring organizations, ask them to join the WISE program. We'll be glad to provide information on the program and can follow-up your contact.

I too feel that the involvement of the students in the activities of IEEE is very less and they can be increased by organinzing different events and workshops and seminars frequently. It will help to popularize IEEE among students.

Yes IEEE should start some engineering activities for students puerly, as it is need for young generation, and i think students are the big resource for future concerns....

well I also think so. IEEE should run more & more contests & events for students. At present there is not much activities for students. I'm saying it , cause i've been an IEEE student Member since last two years. My friends who joined with me most of them left IEEE saying it worthless. So, for making it worth enough for students IEEE should do enough for the students, do enough events, contests & much more.This feeling becomes bitter when i tell juniors to join at IEEE and they asks what are the benefits of it, and i can't satisfy them with any of the IEEE benefits that we currently having in our student branch. So, IEEE leaders should think it & redefine its student activities.

Absolutely correct. Sometimes, i don't think that IEEE does justice to the student members. Most of my friends too think that their IEEE membership is worthless. Since this is going to be the future day, why not do something for the future generation?

Dear All,
Sorry to Say but I disagree with you people.
If your university is one of 1616 universities of world with student branches then your student branch is the entity which SHOULD organize number of quality technical activities (competitions, seminars, workshops, tours) for IEEE members and non members as well. If your university don't have student branch (try to initiate process for Student Branch) then your Local Section will be organizing technical activities.
As well as IEEE Global is concerned it organizes IEEE Xtreme and CHALLENGE24 these both are online global programming competitions in which anyone can participate. And these are not all you can also find many other in your city, state and country as well.
What you have to do is to find the correct person and keep in contact with him/her regarding activities in your local area.

If still something is confusing then i'll love to answer.

I think IEEE has given you a platform. Now its the job of the members to initiate activities and add value to your student branch membership. For me, the greatest benefit IEEE gives , is expanding my network of engineering professionals.

Well, sad we have a student branch here and we are also organizing those activities but we get little help from ieee for organizing these activities and the biggest problem is money shortage. No local sponsors are coming forward to help us. That's why we fall in so much problem.Sometimes we organize these activities by giving money from our own pockets, but you know a student can't afford so much. So, ieee should give or sanction more money for organizing these events on a student branch, another thing is about online contests, there are only two and you know most of the students are not in the programming field, there are very little of them in this field in our branch, so my branch wants to hold this xtreme programming contest this year , but there are only two teams and no proctors from programming background, i don't know it'll be possible or not. I think most students want to gather real life experiences in their field , so ieee should bring an Internship opportunity to its members via its connections to large organizations , if it can be international internship then it'll be great. Now, ieee usa provides internship opportunities with after college , here is the link..http://www.aftercollege.com/organizations/ieee-entry-level-jobs But this is for only ieee usa student members, i think ieee should extend this service all over the world or all ieee members should have the right to apply there. If ieee introduces this service then it'll be great and i bet students will hurry on IEEE.

The Darrel Chong Student Activity Award

Motivation

The purpose of this new recognition system serves to change the mind set of our student groups from being number-driven to become value-driven and acknowledge exemplary student activities around the world. The eventual goal is to improve the quality of the activities and foster knowledge sharing among students. Ultimately, the initiative is targeted at improving student membership growth. This will encourage and motivate students to continue to innovate and implement meaningful ideas.

How does it work?

This award requires interested student groups to submit a description of an organized activity. The activity will be evaluated based on a number of merits and will obtain either a platinum, gold, silver, bronze or “unrated” status. This award is not competitive in nature and does not limit the number of winners to each medal. It allows the same submitted activity to be elevated to the next higher medal based on future improvements made in subsequent years.

Note: The activities that have been organized more than once will be given more consideration. The intent is to encourage consistency; spurring student branches to discover their niche and continually improve on it.

Rules and Eligibility

All IEEE Student Branches, Student Branch Chapters, Student Branch Affinity groups of Women in Engineering (WIE) are eligible for this award program. Activities organized by multiple student braches and/or chapters are also eligible. Each student group may enter as many activities as they want. To enter your activity, simply send your written report (according to the instructions you will find below) by email to ieeegetplatinum@ieee.org, with copies to your Regional Student Activities Committee Chair (RSAC) and Regional Student Representative (RSR). Please include:

The written report summarizing the activity (click here for award criteria)
Any supporting documentation that will support your activity (i.e. photos, attendance lists, promotional material, etc.)
Supporting documents from Sections and Branch Counselors are welcome
The name of your activity and the name of the student branch(es) or student branch chapter(s) if applicable.
The IEEE Region and Section you are in
The name and email address from the branch chair if applicable
The name and email address from the activity leader
Your name and email address (if different from the above)

Note: The nominator for the award does not have to be an organizer or a member of the group. Anyone, including section officers, student branch counselors, department chairs, etc can nominate an IEEE student group as long as they can provide all supporting materials.

Also, make sure that you follow the specific submission rules.

Judging is based on the criteria outlined below. The sum of the point totals for the categories will be 100 points. If required, tie breaking will be at the discretion of the contest administrator using comments provided by the judges. All appeals and questions should be directed to the contest administrator. The decision of the contest administrator is final.

Contest Deadlines

I: Branches submit their activity reports all year long, as the activities are finished and the reports are ready. Judging will occur twice a year, at the Student Activities Committee (SAC) meetings. All activities submitted before 15 November will be judged in December. Activities submitted after that will be judged the following year.

II: SAC results will be announced in December and April.

General Considerations

The beauty of this contest is that it does not limit the number of awardees and allows the students to continuously improve on the same activity to gain an improved rating in the following years. The student groups no longer compete against other student groups; the focus now is shifted to how they can further improve. The challenge is steered from external competition to internal cooperation. There is no restriction on the number of activities submitted by one group. Click here for the award criteria.

Knowledge Sharing: The thrust of this award is also to advance idea sharing. Platinum, Gold and Silver medalists should have the descriptions of their activities posted on the Student Concourse. First it serves to recognize the quality of your activities. Second it serves to share ideas that were implemented in your group, so somewhere else in the world another student group can implement the same idea with a high likelihood of successful results. When writing your proposal, keep that in mind. Give as many tips as possible so others can implement the same idea.

Note: For the sake of copyright issues, SAC will not display the full description on the web site. Instead, parties interested in the details may have to contact the winning student groups. IEEE Student Services should archive all full descriptions to avoid any unnecessary knowledge drain.

About the Award

After the evaluation, each entry will be categorized in the classifications:

Unranked Bronze Silver Gold Platinum

The Bronze Status can be applied to most of the activities we have today. Higher metal status is progressively harder and harder to obtain. Gold status will be given to extremely good activities. Platinum level is reserved to extremely good projects that go beyond the criteria listed below. Winning activities will receive a trophy for the activity and the main individual organizer(s) will receive a certificate. To present the award, SAC will also make an effort to contact members of the section and/or region so the award can be presented at a major event making it more prestigious.

Judging Criteria

The goal of an IEEE Student Activity is to meet a specific need of students in your university, to add value for your student members and to foster the IEEE Mission and Vision locally. The activity can be something totally new, or an old concept implemented very well. This new recognition system serves to make the student branches evaluate their activities along the lines of our evaluation criteria. It is important to note that the activities organized by the region such as student congresses and contests are not eligible for an award.

Below you will find an outline of the judging criteria and how many points each are worth. A detailed description of each criterion can be found in the following pages.

Criteria 1: The Concept (0-20)

Here we will evaluate the idea behind your activity. The main reason of an activity is to meet the needs of your members and other students of your school or your community. Planning is very important. Many answers are already there for you! You must research (mainly on the IEEE Student Concourse), interact with other student branches and groups, with your section, with your RSAC and RSR and other sources so you can meet the needs of your members. To use your creativity is also very important. Here are the criteria that will be used to judge your activity:

Problem recognition / reason for activity (0-5)

How can you serve the best interests of the students in your community, in your school and your members? First you need to know them! Survey, talk to the members, to faculty/teachers, get to know what environment you are submersed in! Designate one member to be an OMBUDSMAN so he/she can take ideas, complaints and suggestions from your members and other students. Then, clearly state the motivations for your activity. What need / goal is the activity meant to achieve? Here we will be judging how well you can scan the needs of your student population.

Relevance / value created (0-5)

Now that you know the needs of your student population you must find a way (or several) to meet those needs. IEEE has an enormous number of programs and resources that can be used to help you meet those needs. You should navigate the student concourse, get information from other student groups, and consult your own student record files and so on. With all this information on hand, now you are able to come up with a good idea for an activity. Here we will be judging the value created by your activity to your student population. What is the relevance of this activity?

Creativity / uniqueness (0-5)

IEEE has several resources, products and programs available for students, but they are certainly not enough, and not all of them fit perfectly for all students. You can adapt, or even come up with something totally new! Brainstorm! Get ideas from people outside your group/IEEE. Think “out of the box”! Here we will judge the uniqueness and creativity of your activity.

Quality of the written proposal (0-5)

IEEE is all about getting us ready for the future. One of the skills engineers must have is to know how to communicate their ideas. Your ideas will reach the judges through a written document, so it is very important to make it very clear and easy to read with any necessary supporting documentation or illustration.

Criteria 2: Implementation (0-20)

Having a great idea is important, but how you implement it is equally as important. Think the whole process through ahead of time. Try to anticipate possible flaws. Have a Plan. Plan your time wisely. It is very important that your team know the entire plan. It helps if you assign one person to be responsible for each part of the activity. Write everything down! It is essential to have all the major information available to your team during the activity. Make a manual, a guide, even a binder which gathers all of the relevant information in one place will help. Provide as many details as possible. Here we will be judging how effective you were at putting it the activity together. Did everything run smoothly during the activity? If not, how were problems resolved. How well was it implemented?

Implementation / Organization (0-15)

The concept described above will be judged under this category. Try to provide as much information as possible showing how the activity was run.

Collaboration (0-5)

Get as much help for your activity as possible. Maybe it will be a project developed by your student group with help from other associations. Maybe it will be a project co-led by two or more organizations. Maybe you will be supporting a project from another organization. A lot can be gained from interaction with other organizations. Think about sharing an activity with other nearby IEEE student branches and/or groups, with other student associations at your school, with your local IEEE section, with your local high school or middle school or your community and so on. The more collaborative the project is, the more points it will get.

Criteria 3: Repeatability (0-15)

Knowledge sharing is a key issue to all modern organizations. In IEEE Student Branches, where the officers stay for very short terms this is especially true. When doing an activity, you want to think about it, trying to make it easily repeatable (and better yet, improved) the next time.

Sustainability (0-8)

How easy is it for the upcoming volunteers to repeat this activity in the future? Is it getting easier every-year? Documenting what was done in the past is a great start. How did you overcome particular problems? Who are the key people to talk to in order to get help? Information isn’t the only thing that will make projects easier the next time around. If, for instance, you involve freshmen and sophomores in the organization of an activity this semester, it will be much easier for them to run it again. Also the activity might result in some general changes in the environment that will make it easier next time around (such as: the schools officials now believe that we can do it, so they will support us).

Portability (0-7)

We want to foster knowledge sharing among students from all over the world. Here your activity will be judged on how well it addresses the needs of students in other universities. Also, how easily can it be replicated? Most of the sustainability concepts apply, but now the judges focus will be on how your activity can be replicated somewhere else.

Criteria 4: Results and Outcomes (0-45)

It is not enough to state the idea. You must provide further information showing the actual results of your activities in each of the categories below. Surveys, support letters, newspaper or other press material are more than welcome.

Participation (0-5)

We have to be aware that not all activities meet the needs of all student members. We can address separate needs in different activities. But is very important that the activity reaches the group/target audience for which it was intended. Does it meet the needs of the audience? Therefore, it is very important to reach a good number of students, directly or indirectly. To obtain this publicity and communication is very important. Be sure that everyone knows about your activity. Try to deliver the message as clearly as possible so people will be interested. Get help from friends, other associations, and teachers and so on. You might consider having some food or maybe a drawing for a free IEEE membership or souvenir. Be sure to enclose a list of participants to support your numbers. Also list everyone who was involved with the activity (remember: the volunteers gain a lot by running this activity)

Relevance to IEEE (0-10)

As a part of IEEE, it is very important that the students are aligned with the Mission and Vision of the Organization. Try to think if your activity attracts new members, if it helps maintain the members you have, if somehow it will lead participants to become IEEE members in the future. You might also want to read and understand the IEEE Mission and Vision so you can align your activities with the general organizational strategy. Issues such as increasing the public awareness of technology, social development with help from technology, ethics in the engineering profession, etc. are just some examples of points you might consider addressing in your activities.

Positive Impact (0-10)

How much impact did your activity create? Were people satisfied? Were any major changes achieved? Here you can use some numbers to backup your statement. New members? Retention? State the major impact from the activity to members, other students, or society in general.

Overall Impression (0-10)

Here the judges will express their general feeling about your activity. Was value created? Were the goals met? How impressive was the activity as a whole?

Changing Mindset (0-10)

This is the most unique criteria. The primary idea of this new system serves to change the mind set of our student groups from being number-driven to become value-driven. So you are encouraged to focus on the value of your activity much more than on numbers. Here judges will try to see if your activity captures the mind set change concept behind this new system. Improving on past ideas, and promoting good ideas as sustainable changes within your student groups and IEEE as a whole.
