Liverpool's season is firmly back on track after a Yossi Benayoun hat-trick left promoted Burnley overwhelmed..
The top-flight new boys had started the season very well with wins over Manchester United and Everton but have now suffered successive defeats at Chelsea and now Liverpool - conceding seven in the process.
They could not live with a vibrant Liverpool, who kept up an impressive high tempo throughout and are slowly wiping away the memory of those two early league defeats to Tottenham and Aston Villa.
Benayoun scored his first from the edge of the box, and saw his shot parried by the overworked Brian Jensen for Dirk Kuyt to add the second before the break.
Steven Gerrard's pass set up Benayoun for his second, a close-range tap-in, before the Israeli was sent clear by substitute Andriy Voronin for his third and Liverpool's fourth.
Rafael Benitez made two changes from the side which won at Bolton a fortnight ago, with Martin Skrtel returning to central defence in place of Greece international Sotirios Kyrgiakos.
With Javier Mascherano suffering a muscle injury while on international duty with Argentina and not arriving back until late Friday, Benayoun came into the side.
And what a tremendous impact he made, with a goal and a display of running power that Burnley never came to terms with.
The Clarets, in their first league visit to Anfield for 33 years, retained the side that lost at Chelsea last time out, with new loan signing David Nugent - a former Liverpool trainee - on the bench.
The absence of Mascherano meant that Steven Gerrard played in a much deeper role, alongside Lucas in the centre of midfield, with Benayoun and Kuyt left to play just behind Fernando Torres.
Burnley started brightly with Martin Paterson firing wide from the edge of the box, while Kuyt produced a low shot at the other end that produced the first of many saves by Jensen.
Liverpool slowly built up possession, moving the ball quickly and Torres saw a curling 20-yard shot clear the far post.
But Burnley had Steven Fletcher and Paterson interchanging positions up front and the visitors were quick and dangerous on the break.
Liverpool's best early chance came when Emiliano Insua's chip was headed a foot wide by Benayoun, the beginning of a purple patch from the 29-year-old.
The lively Israel captain broke the deadlock with a gem of a goal after 27 minutes.
He surged from midfield, turned away from Graham Alexander and moved into the box to fire across Jensen and into the bottom corner.
Benayoun almost added another a minute later when he met Albert Riera's cross with a low header that Jensen blocked, the Burnley goalkeeper also keeping out Kuyt's follow-up.
Jensen had to keep out drives from Benayoun and Lucas before Paterson forced his way past Gerrard to unleash a rising drive that was held by Jose Reina.
But Liverpool went further ahead after 40 minutes with a dynamic five-man break from defence.
Torres and Insua combined to set up Benayoun for a 20-yard shot that Jensen blocked, but only as far as Kuyt who clipped home from five yards.
The increasingly busy Jensen had to produce the save of the half to keep out a Gerrard 20-yard drive before the break.
Liverpool kept up their assault after the interval with Riera seeing two efforts blocked while Jensen saved from a Kuyt flick.
Stephen Jordan was booked for a block on Torres before Burnley sent on Chris Eagles to replace Robbie Blake.
Torres was starting to stretch a tiring Burnley defence by now and only Tyrone Mears' fine saving tackle stopped the Spaniard in full flow.
But after 61 minutes Torres' pass played in a fiercely determined Gerrard, who battered his way past two men in the box to find Benayoun on the far post for a tap-in.
Liverpool sent on Swiss defender Philipp Degen for Glen Johnson and Voronin for the hard-running Kuyt, the game well won by now, and Burnley responded by giving Nugent his debut for Paterson.
Benayoun had an effort ruled out for offside and Gerrard forced his way through again to hit a post, before David Ngog took over from Torres.
There was still time for Benayoun to secure his hat-trick after 81 minutes. Voronin's pass sent him clear in the box - played onside by Jordan - and he side-footed the ball past an exposed Jensen.
Eagles was booked for a foul on Benayoun, Jensen saved again from Gerrard and Voronin missed when clear, with Burnley just wanting it all to end.

This weekend at the Reebok Stadium Bolton take on Liverpool. Both of these teams are out of form at the moment and have struggled to find any real momentum so far in the Premier League. Liverpool are still trying to adapt to life without the influence of Xabi Alonso in their midfield. This is hampered by the fact that new boy Alberto Aquilani is still not available through injury and will be missing for at least a few more weeks.

Although Liverpool's start this season hasn't been great, the teams who have beaten them are actually very good sides in their own right. Spurs are a much stronger outfit this year and will be fighting for European places at the end of the season. I don't think that LFC will be the last side to get beat at White Hart Lane this year. Aston Villa have not shown consistency lately, but still possess a squad with fantastics pace and ability and will also climb the table this year as they starts to put things right.

Bolton's losses have come at home to Sunderland and away to Hull City who with all due respect are not of the same quality of Aston Villa or Spurs. Liverpool had no problems defeating Stoke 4-0 last week, while at the time of writing this preview Bolton have just scraped through their Carling Cup game by beating League 1 side Tranmere 1-0. What I am trying to say here is that there is a much lower standard of opposition than Liverpool which is causing Bolton problems and also beating them at the moment. While Liverpool are finding it difficult against stronger Premiership sides but look capable of comfortably beating the weaker Premiership sides.

Liverpool have had the best of the recent meetings between these two sides over the past few seasons and you would have to go back to September 2006 to find the last time Bolton managed a league victory in this fixture. Since then they have played 5, lost 5, scored 1 and conceded 15. Bolton have tried to make their back line more solid with the signings of Zat Knight and Sam Ricketts during the summer. But I do not feel that they have the same quality that they had under Sam Allardyce and will find it much more difficult to cause the same problems to the top sides in the way they did back then.

I think that there is every chance that this Bolton side will be up against a Liverpool side who will be looking to put a few things right and get their title challenge back on track in this fixture. I also feel that player to player Liverpool have the quality to overcome this fragile Bolton side. A lot depends on Liverpool's key players turning up in the right frame of mind here and finally kick-starting their season. I would be very surprised If Liverpool don't manage to take this one by at least one goal.

Liverpool slumped to their second defeat in three opening games and their first home defeat since December 2007.

After suffering just two defeats in the whole of last season, Rafa Benitez's side have huge question marks over their season already.

Villa were two up by half-time courtesy of two more goals from set-pieces. The first arrived in the shape of a Lucas own-goal from an Ashley Young free-kick, the second a header from Curtis Davies off a corner on the stroke of half-time.

Liverpool complained about the award of the corner but the referee made the correct decision, then Benitez complained about the time added on but that was due to Reina protesting the corner award and being booked for kicking the ball away in frustration.

Frustration was apparent all around Anfield; on the pitch and in the stands.

The second half started much brighter and when Insua found Torres to make it 2-1 it looked like a comeback could be on.

But a rush of blood to the head of Gerrard saw him foul Reo-Coker in the box and Young coolly dispatched the penalty to make it 3-1.

Benitez’s pre-match comments about wanting to perform better than in the 5-0 win against Villa back in April came back to haunt him tonight and no doubt gave the Villa players added incentive.

Few could have anticipated both teams suffering opening day losses. Liverpool were beaten for only the third time in the Premier League’s first game, but they responded by beating Stoke 4-0 on Wednesday, their best win since they beat Blackburn by the same score in April.

Last season Villa had Brad Friedel sent off and Liverpool won 5-0, and they have gone 15 games without loss.

Villa last beat Liverpool in September 2001, winning 3-1 at Anfield. Since then Liverpool have won nine and drawn six. Liverpool test Martin Skrtel (facial) and Danny Agger (back). Villa still miss new signing Stewart Downing.

Liverpool FC boss Rafa Benitez will choose between teenager Daniel Ayala, Slovakian Martin Skrtel and new signing Sotirios Kyrgiakos to partner Jamie Carragher in defence against Aston Villa at Anfield on Monday.

Skrtel is still in contention despite missing the midweek 4-0 win over Stoke with a fractured jaw.

Kyrgiakos, a £2million acquisition from AEK Athens, lacks match fitness, so Ayala could retain his place.

After a false start to their Premier League season, losing 2-1 away to Spurs last weekend, Liverpool looked to take a second crack at it tonight as they welcomed Stoke City to Anfield.
The Reds looked angry from the off, Lucas Leiva testing Thomas Sorensen with a long range drive soon after kick-off.
The hosts continued their early harassment of Sorensen until, after five minutes had passed, Fernando Torres struck to give the home side a 1-0 advantage.
Sublime work down the left flank from Steven Gerrard allowed the skipper to square the ball neatly into the path of 'El Nino', who had nothing left to do put slide the ball into the net.
Liverpool continued to dominate throughout the first half, the Potters rarely threatening if only through set pieces.
It is worth mentioning that, in the absence of Xabi Alonso, Lucas continued to do a stand-up job as he continues in his bid to fill the hefty boots of the recently departed Spaniard.
Terrific work from Glen Johnson and Dirk Kuyt down the right hand side continued to harangue the visitors as the first half soldiered on.
And, just as the anticipation of the half-time whistle was getting to boiling point, the link-up play between the right-sided dangermen came to fruition.
A decent strike from Kuyt was blocked in the 6-yard box, but, unfortunately for Stoke, the ball was perfectly teed up for Johnson to acrobatically bicycle-kick the Reds into a 2-0 lead.
The story remained the same after the break, Johnson persistantly roaming up and down the right flank and causing no end of problems for the visiting side.

Well a horrible display and rough start to the season for the Reds. I believe Tottenham looked like a force to be reckoned with. The problems I saw were we started off too defensively and let them take the early lead and it set the tone for the rest of the match. Babel, Lucas, and Voronin looked asleep, and the only player that I thought played a good match was Benayoun, he created more chances then the other 3 did the whole game and he was subbed. Glen Johnson had a few good runs, he should be a good asset, but our midfeild and tactics hurt us. Also, the injuries did not help as everyone saw Torres limping on that ankle the whole game he was not 100% and did not even get a shot off, and Skrtel and Carragher were just coming off injuries to just injure each other in the match. But none the less Tottenham deserved to win that game, and I do not take that away from them. Couple of big non calls from the ref at the end there, but I believe we shouldn't have put ourselves in the posistion to need them. All we can do from here is to learn and move forward. YNWA

The History Of Liverpool FC

Liverpool Football Club was formed in 1892 and is rightfully classed as the most successful British club at club level. However our beginnings are a direct result of Everton. Following some rule changes in 1882 Everton were forced to find some enclosed grounds to play and met with John Houlding in the Sandon. A ground was to be positioned off priory Road which was there home until they were forced to leave. In 1884 John Orrel agreed to let Houlding have a pitch at Anfield Road and the first ever game at Anfield saw a home win. Houlding poured money into the cause but after a few years became a harder owner to be with. Eventually Orrel and Houlding move further towards a severe rift and eventually when a plan to buy the ground by Houlding failed, Orrel evicted the club. After a further meeting a breakawy part of the club split from Anfield to form their own team, leaving Anfield empty in the hands of Orrel and Houlding. However those left at the club with Houlding decided the only thing to do with an empty football ground was form a team to play there and in May 1892 Liverpool Association Football Club was formed.

The club began in the Lancashire Association League with John McKenna in charge of the team. McKenna had been one of the men who stayed and sided with Houlding in the split. Liverpool’s first game came on September 1st 1892 against Rotherham and Liverpool won 7-1. This first team saw the eleven players all arriving following a trip north of the border by McKenna who has scottish connections in Glasgow. One year on from formation McKenna again applied for election to the Football league and this time was accepted. Their first game at Anfield in the league saw them dispose of Lincoln 4-0 In fact Liverpool went through the season unbeaten and following a knockout competition they beat one Newton Heath in the final to get there place in the top division. However a disapponting second season saw them bottom of the league and lose the knockout competition to be relegated. A tough fighting spirit at the club though saw them promoted back again the following season. They stayed in the top division for eight years and in season 1900-01 Liverpool won the first of their championships. Two seasons earlier Liverpool had ridded themselves of their blue and white quartered shirts in favour of the now famous red shirts.

The end of the 1903-04 season saw the reds relegated only to return straight away following a championship win again from Division 2 and Liverpool followed this by winning the first division in 1905-06.
